The sun had barely started to peek above the horizon when he’d slipped out of the tangled sheets. Nicky padded through the dark apartment, his bare shoulders and back still damp from the grip of the dream that had guaranteed he wasn’t gonna get in another hour. He’d never been one of those kids who’d bounced out of bed at the crack of dawn, Darce hadn’t been for as long as he could remember either. Mandy’s middle of the night hungry shrieks had broken the pattern for a while, by then, though, Darcey had moved into his own place with Lorna. Close by, but not close enough to be clamping the pillow over his head every time their sister’s wails filled the house.
Nicky glanced at Mandy’s bedroom door before he slipped into the bathroom. These days the three of them were lucky they weren’t waking each other up. The dreams had to be thick as fleas on a dog’s back for all of them. His weren’t even burdened heavier by how Lorna had been taken from them. That had happened while he’d been blithely drifting around this bloody country, instead of being on the other side of the pond where he might’ve been able to do something to help rescue his brother that hadn’t cost his sister-in-law and their unborn child their lives. Not this time, he had crystal clear memories of every moment of terror and fear he’d felt as they’d desperately tried to track Mandy down. The anticipation of bursting through that front door to find Mandy already cold and stiff as marble. The relief of her throwing herself at her brothers and rushing Mandy and Maeve out of the shattered remains of the mansion’s front door. That bit was never in his dreams though, that would’ve been far too comforting.
Soap and hot water washed the funk of the fear sweat away, left his skin glowing faintly pink as he stepped out. Neither one of them had been woken up by his dawn ablutions. Hopefully they’d both get a little more sleep – peaceful sleep at that. Usually he’d have lingered over a cup of tea before he left for the shop, but this morning he went straight from getting dressed in the gloom of his bedroom to slipping out the door. A note on the fridge in his neat hand told Darcey and Mandy he’d gone to the shop early. Maybe one or the other would show up later, both if Darce refused to let Mandy out of his sight. They’d managed to shatter the spell on Mikaelson’s little witch trapping toy, but the man himself was still out there.
There was no sign of Mikaelson or anybody else on the streets as he walked the short distance to the shop. You wouldn’t have got an entirely empty street in London, not at any time of night. Mystic Falls wasn’t London though, he didn’t feel as though his roots ran through the streets here. The shop was as close as he got to a patch of home this many hundreds of miles away. Add a little more tat to what was clustered in the front room, some moth eaten fur coats and chintzy china and it could’ve been a mirror image of it.
He opened the front door, slipping a hand up through the gap to grip the bell and lift it out of the way – in case Maeve heard it a floor above. Even with her magic back she had to be on edge. She was still in a foreign country with the man who took her just a matter of miles away. Later he’d knock, maybe see if she wanted to venture out for lunch somewhere – he didn’t relish the idea of her leaving Mystic Falls, but surely at some point she’d want to go home to her family. Nicky felt something in his gut tighten at the thought. She’d been a light in their lives, no matter how brief, or how faint it’d been to start with. Lord only knew they’d needed that.
Slipping behind the counter, he headed for the back room and the kettle. On instinct alone he slipped past the curtain, moving easily in the darkness. In an hour or so the sun would be high enough to flood over the rear wall of the small yard out back of the shop and through the glass in the back door. For now the watery light barely illuminated the space – the small table and its surrounding scatter of mismatched chairs. The small stretch of counter with the fridge whirring under it and the kettle sitting on it. The long low shadows of the drawers and shelves that held the things that were far more valuable than what was aside. The tumble of blonde hair that twitched as he stumbled in the thickly shadowed dark and went grabbing for the counter. ”Jesus, Mary and Joseph,” Nicky cursed. He had a hand out in an instant. ”Post tenebras speco lucem!” The spell spilled out quickly, a ball of light swelling in the palm of his hand like a miniature sun to fill the room with light. ”Cassie? What the ‘ell are you doin’ ‘ere?” Nicky frowned at her, drawing a bit of power from the spell so he wasn’t blinding her like some prick with his high beams blasting on a dark road.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ THE COT WASN’T SO BAD. HONESTLY! YEAH, CASSIE experienced back pain for the first time in her life, but it was better than trying to figure out the minefield of living with Abby and Monique. Once in a while, she still went back━just to, y’know, make sure stuff was smoothed out between them━but Cassie mostly slept in the back of the shop. It worked out, too, ‘cause she was never late for work, and she always took the morning shifts nobody wanted. Win-win. Plus, Nicky trusted her (or she liked to think so), and that meant he let her kinda, like, figure out most of the stuff on her own━especially when they were busy… with Klaus stuff. Or, um, recovering from Klaus stuff. And Cassie figured they still were, so it made sense that she was still running the show a lot of the time. And it was going good, too! Whenever it was slow, she tried to come up with new sales to pitch to Nicky, or draw posters, or use a spell to jazz up the inside of the store. It was kind of awesome.
And they still had little mentoring sessions whenever Nicky was free, too! Which was what led her to getting Olive, who was… y’know, cute, and super sassy, but kind of a bitch. And really bad at being a familiar. But Cassie figured that was her fault, so she’d work it out herself. Maybe she’d ask Nicky, too, the next time she saw him.
She just hadn’t expected next time to be in the middle of the night… while she was having a particularly good dream about Linc. Cassie heard his curse and, in her dream, it was coming from Magnus, who just magically appeared in the same grassy, date-night spot where they were. Like, seriously, out of nowhere.
But Magnus wasn’t gonna be casting a spell. And as Cassie slowly woke up, she furrowed her brows at the light on the other side of her eyelids, raising a hand to cover them before peeling them back. “Huh?” Cassie asked lazily, feeling Olive bounce off of the cot, hearing her grumble like she wasn’t the biggest fucking princess in the world at any other time. But then Cassie realized it was Nicky’s voice, and that she was still sleeping in his store, and she sat up quickly, suddenly sober.
“Shit,” She whispered, staring up at Nicky in the low light. “Um… I had to… stuff got kinda bad at the place I was stayin’ at with my friends,” Squatting at, and they weren’t really her friends. “... Just last night. So I, um, I thought I could crash here. Sorry, I shoulda asked.” She smiled sheepishly at him, then glanced at Olive, who was now glaring at Cassie like, ‘Okay, we’re up, gimme food now.’ And, unfortunately, said-food-bag was stuffed under the cot, and her litter box was in the back corner. Which, y’know, wouldn’t be that crazy if Olive was just here every day and Cassie rushed from the motel room to get away, but a suitcase full of Cassie’s stuff was a few feet away, too. Open, her stuff spread messily around it━she was gonna tidy up in the morning like she always did.
Even if it could be explained away, she didn’t really wanna lie to Nicky. It wasn’t fair, and maybe he’d go easier on her if she did tell the truth. “Okay, that was a lie, it wasn’t last night.” Cassie puffed, shifting to swing her legs off the cot, sitting on the edge, her socked feet brushing the floor. She was wearing a Barbie-themed pyjama set, though, which might’ve been the most embarrassing thing about this. “It was a little while ago. I just thought…” She sucked in a breath and spoke the last word like she had something else to say, but ended up puffing out a breath and hanging her head. “... I’m sorry. I should’ve just found a new place. But I was like, I’m here in the mornings, right? And… ugh, I’m sorry.” Not to mention, she didn’t make that kind of money, and she was still scared of everyone out there, but that wasn’t Nicky’s problem. He was being nice by giving her this job and mentoring her, and she’d taken advantage.

With his partner god only knew where, it had felt like the shop was his private little corner of the earth. He hadn’t taken over the flat upstairs – although Nicky supposed he could’ve done if he really wanted to batten down the hatches here. It’d been his place, everything remaining just as it was left for when (he wasn’t about to start calling it in case) he came back. The back room on the other hand had became his spot. The heavy velvet curtain hung with his own two hands – although the wooden frame of the door had put up a fight as he’d tried to drill into it to hang the rod for it. Furniture had been bought at the same sort of estate sales the rest of their stock turned up at. Warm wood, flowery china, bits that reminded him of home. When his mind had started to wander back there, he could close the curtain and drink up the feel of magic in the air, rising from what they had back here like steam from the kettle.
Nicky supposed he should’ve seen Cassie slowly taking it over the same way she had the rest of the shop. He wasn’t pissed about it, the girl had kept the place open when their world was falling apart after all. With little more than promises and a few dollars above minimum wage, she’d stuck around when most would’ve bolted and left them to it. The intentions had been there to find some extra way to thank Cassie for everything she’d done – atop taking some of the pressure back off of her shoulders and getting back on with their tutoring schedule. He hadn’t pictured this though.
One squinted glance in the glare of the light he had glowing in the poky space and it was clear Cassie hadn’t just fallen asleep here when she’d finished closing up yesterday. A cot had been set up, the cat he’d grudgingly allowed in the shop – with the warning to keep her away from anything breakable – jumping down off of it with a complaint. ”Wake up, Cassie,” Nicky drawled dryly. His lips quirked fast enough as she did just that, shooting upright like he’d conjured a light in her brain the same way he had in his palm.
Stepping back towards the door, Nicky flipped up the switch to turn the overhead light on. The ball of light in his palm snuffed out, his fingers curling back into his palm as he looked at her expectantly. ”You managed to get that set up fast. Didn’t even know we had a cot knockin’ ‘round in ‘ere.” He lifted his chin towards the cot. Cassie had never seemed to be the guileful sort to him, the broken explanation not feeling particularly believable now – when it came to the time scale at least.
He dragged his lower lip between his teeth, glancing down at the cat – who seemed to be the most put out about all of this. Maybe if he’d been here a little more he’d have noticed that someone was staying in the shop. It’d been so easy to put it all in Cassie’s hands, to trust her to open, to close when he needed her to. She’d done him more favours than he could count, including giving Mikaelson’s name when she’d finally put things together.
”I figured,” Nicky huffed as Cassie started to backtrack just moments later. He leaned back against that short stretch of counter, arms crossing over his chest as he gaze raked the room again, settling on the spill of her stuff on the floor. Perhaps he should’ve been impressed that she was managing to stow all of this out of sight every night. The apologies stuttered out of her in a way that had him looking back at her. There were times when he forgot how young she still was – practically of an age with Mandy. She might’ve been desperate to live out from under her brother’s thumbs, but there was no way him or Darce would’ve let her live on her own full time, with none of her family around. Was it hypocrisy when he’d done just that, travelling the world on his own when he was their age? Absolutely, but this wasn’t about him.
His eyes narrowed faintly as he studied her, the corners crinkling with amusement as he took in the Barbie pyjamas. Nicky shifted his weight, tapping a thumb against his bicep. ”Did you think you couldn’t ask me? I know Darcey can be scary, but I thought things were better between me and you than that.” He wasn’t disappointed, not in the way his old man would’ve been if he’d been caught lying, or screwing up. Out of all of them Darce had managed to find the most trouble, but even then the whip hadn’t truly cracked down at home. Their parents had just accepted each of them for who they were. ”There’s no chance of goin’ back to the place you were in before?” If there wasn’t then options were limited. Kick the kid out onto the street and be an arsehole, start stumping up enough money that she could afford somewhere (he’d have said upstairs, but with Maeve occupying the one bedroom flat, he didn’t think cramming another witch in would be a good idea), or throw his hands up and let it continue, Barbie pyjamas, pissed off cat and all.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ MAAAAAN, SHE WAS ABSOLUTELY SCREWED. AND Cassie didn’t wanna be screwed. Not unless it was in the good way, of course… and by Linc. Obviously. Okay, no━not the point! She was gonna be freaking homeless in a second if she didn’t start kissing up and all she could think about was her boyfriend?! Ugh!
Anyway. She might just be homeless whether or not she apologized a hundred times, ‘cause Nicky probably didn’t want her (and her cat) living in his business. Sure, she ran the store for months while he was emotionally checked out, and she could practically run it herself now (save for a few purchasing things here and there), but he didn’t owe her room and board. He knew that, and she wasn’t gonna expect it of him.
He turned on the light, and Cassie squinted as she got used to it, though her eyes felt like all they wanted to do was close━like she wasn’t done sleeping. Which she wasn’t. But she doubted Nicky was just gonna let her carry on without a conversation. And, apparently, he was seeing right through her lies, too. Great. Not that she wanted to lie━obviously, ‘cause she immediately took it back━but that probs didn’t work in her favour. Man, was he gonna fire her, too? Today just sucked. And Olive was staring at Cassie like this was her fault.
“They are!” Cassie nearly squealed, looking up at Nicky with her eyes blown wide. “I swear! I just… I thought that there was no way you were gonna say yes, and it felt really weird and awkward, and I know I did a lot while Mandy was gone, but you don’t owe me this.” All the thoughts trapped in her head rushed right out of her mouth, “And I didn’t wanna put you in that position. And I just… figured it was temporary. And that nobody would notice… ‘cause they haven’t.”
When he asked about the motel room, Cassie visibly deflated into her lap, staring down at her goldfish-patterned socks and frowning. There was no way he was letting her stay. “I… I guess I can see.” She whispered, though she knew it wasn’t possible. “I just… I was with the other Harvest girls.” And Nicky knew all about that whole thing. What happened during the ritual, what happened after, and the awkward shit she was dealing with now. She hadn’t told him about Monique visiting after Mandy was taken, obvs, ‘cause Nicky had bigger stuff to worry about. “And you know I already, like, felt really weird around them. They kind of… sucked. For lack of a…” Better explanation. But she was tired, so she waved her hand around as if that would replace the need for the end of her sentence.
“Anyway, I saw Monique again━y’know, the one who’s, like, the biggest bitch of them━and she was like ‘why aren’t you staying with us anymore’ and whatever, like obviously pissed, and I told her about Linc, and she got super pissed ‘cause he’s a vampire.” Cassie suddenly realized that he probably didn’t care about her teenage drama, and she frowned again, then sighed softly. “It’s, like… whatever. It doesn’t really matter. I was just really uncomfortable there, but I can… get a new room. Or live with them ‘til I find a roommate to rent an apartment with or something.” The insecurity━and doubt━was obvious in her voice, and in the way she refused to look at him, but Cassie meant every word of it. She’d suck it up and figure it out if Nicky actually wanted her out tonight… but hopefully he’d settle for tomorrow.

His parents had never hired help – why bother when you had a house full of kids that you planned on training up to take over one day anyway? For bank holidays and those weeks away as a family every summer to Margate or Cromer they’d shut the place up. It wasn’t like he’d intended on doing it here either. There’d been the outside chance of his partner coming back, but ‘til then Nicky had thought he could probably handle the place alone. Was there really gonna be a queue outside the door if the place ended up shut for a few days? He doubted it. Cassie had been an unexpected addition, one that had worked out for all of them. Maybe he should’ve come up with some sort of employee package or at least a proper contract when she’d started working here instead of playing the whole thing by ear – and then obviously ending up deaf when Mandy’s kidnapping had drowned everything out.
If he’d listened a little harder after Mandy had come back to them maybe he’d have realised what was going on. Darce might’ve been a little lacking in the heart department these days (that’s what happened when your wife and unborn child were tragically killed), but even he’d probably have noticed if he was spending more time here. Of course, that might’ve meant him telling her to sling her hook. He didn’t have the same relationship with Cassie that he had – especially not after he’d thought she’d been keeping Mandy’s location to himself. Him and her with friends, and Nicky saw that in Cassie’s eyes as they widened. She thought he was gonna be pissed off enough to put a stop to the whole thing.
Shaking his head, Nicky sucked in a breath. ”I’d say I owed you more than this. Without you we probably wouldn’t have found Mandy or Maeve. Might not’ve had much of a shop left either.” Not that this place was half as important as his sister was. ”No matter how you think I’m gonna react, you need to talk to me. I might’ve been a little blind, but I won’t always be.” At some point one of them would probably have ended up spotting cat fur around, or would’ve finally unearthed the cot from wherever Cassie had been hiding that in here. Brows drawing together, he glanced around the room like he could figure out how she’d fitted all the pieces in the jumbled puzzle of stuff back here.
The place was homely, just as the back room had been in London. The necessities of the little kitchen set up (the kettle had been the first thing he’d bought for the place when he’d signed his contract with his partner), and a table to do the other set of books at, tucked in alongside the shelves and mismatched cabinets they used to store the more specialist items. It was warm and dry, probably better than the motel in some ways, although the lack of a full bathroom here might’ve done him in. Looking at it, Nicky could see its appeal, especially if she was hiding out from the others – which she was, he could see it as she deflated like old balloon.
It would’ve been a cruelty to send her back there after what she’d told him about the other Harvest girls. Must’ve been bad enough for her being stuck with them after the ritual, being crammed together again after had to have stifling. ”It’s not surprisin’,” he admitted. ”You went through somethin’ awful with ‘em, facin’ that reminder every day’s got to have been hard.” She’d been doing it until she’d moved in here though and wouldn’t be again.
Concern deepened the lines between Nicky’s brow and had him straightening up. Had he been ecstatic to know that Cassie was hanging around with a vampire? Not particularly, but having met the kid, he knew that in a town full of evils, Linc wasn’t one of them. Maybe the Harvest Girls’ experience with the vampires in New Orleans had left them more bitter about the whole thing, but it didn’t give them an excuse to make things uncomfortable for Cassie. ”Shouldn’t be any of her business that you’ve started to move on from what happened.” And from them. It mattered, whether Cassie thought so or not. If she was uncomfortable there, he wasn’t gonna force her to go back.
”Hey,” he murmured, pulling away from the counter to stand in front of her. Nicky bent slightly, trying to get her to look up at him. ”I’m not makin’ you go back. If you don’t wanna stay with ‘em, you don’t have to. I wish I could offer you somethin’ better, but with Darcey and Mandy at my place and Maeve upstairs, there’s no room at those inns, but if you want, you can stay here ‘til we find somethin’ for you. I’m guessin’ the cat’s staying put too?” Bending down, Nicky scritched his fingers under Olive’s chin. His dad had always complained at the idea of having a pet at home, telling them he’d be the one looking after it. It seemed as though he was gonna get to skip that with Olive here, Cassie was cleaning up so well that she’d been able to hide all of this for weeks.

━ climb that goddamn mountain ━ “OKAY.” CASSIE SMILED SHEEPISHLY, “I will next time. Promise.” And she would. She knew Nicky was generally understanding, and she didn’t have any other bosses to compare him to, but from sharing stories with other people, she knew she’d gotten lucky. It just seemed like too big of an ask, too big to share, and omitting the truth was better, especially when he’d gone weeks without noticing. Maybe this was bound to happen, though. She just didn’t really think it through all the way.
Cassie admitted it all to him now━the harvest girls, the hotel, and even Linc━and Nicky didn’t throw his arms up and kick her out. He defended her, agreed with her, but Cassie knew that didn’t mean he’d let her stay. She hung her head, so sure he’d tell her to pack up her stuff and get out. Maybe he wouldn’t even let her keep her job.
But when Nicky appeared in front of her, Cassie’s blue eyes rose sheepishly, meeting his own without raising her head. Slowly, as he went on, she realized her worst fears were coming true━Nicky was telling her to leave in a nice way, and… and then he wasn’t. Slowly, her chin came up, and she beamed at him. “Really?!” Cassie squealed, jumping to her feet and throwing her arms around him. Olive had been enjoying Nicky’s scritches until this, and voiced her displeasure as she jumped off the cot, irritated by Cassie’s excitement.
“Thank you!” She yelped, somehow forgetting that she’d just been pulled from her sleep a little too soon. As soon as she was settled back on the cot, Cassie looked at Olive and sighed heavily. The cat did a little circle, eyed Cassie suspiciously━like she was waiting for Cassie to do something irritating━then eventually padded back over. She rubbed against Nicky’s leg instead, like she couldn’t trust her actual owner.
“I dunno.” She puffed, her eyes sliding up to Nicky’s face. “Y’know, we were talking about familiars and stuff for weeks, right? So then when Linc wanted to get me a cat, it was perfect, ‘cause I was so excited to have one. And she was really nice at first, but now it’s like… she literally doesn’t like me. And it’s not just normal cat stuff, like not listening or whatever, but she doesn’t help with my spells, she runs away or she, like, gives me attitude. And I’m not being crazy,” Cassie gave a half smile like she was trying to find the humour in it, but honestly, she was just disappointed. “And I feel bad ‘cause I adopted her, and I wanna give her a good home, but I don’t think she likes it here. I don’t think she likes her life with me.” And that sucked, ‘cause why was sitting in a Kitty Orphanage better than hanging with Cassie?

Mandy had never pulled her punches when it came to her brothers. She had the Reid honesty about her, coming somewhere between him and Darce with how she’d mouth off at you. Even as a kid she’d have given him an earful on just what sort of a brother he was – absent for most of her childhood. It had been different with Darcey. The two of them had been far closer in age and thick as thieves most of the time. He was trying now with Mandy, but Nicky knew he had a lot to make up for, especially after what had happened to her with the Original bastard. Mandy probably wouldn’t let him all that much, especially not when her idea of her brothers loosening up was letting her go and see the bloke who’d turned up here that day. The friend.
Was he somehow looking for a do-over when it came to Cassie? Like maybe he could be the big brother to her that he hadn’t exactly been to Mandy? Nicky considered it for a second as she promised to talk to him the next time something came up. Nah. He’d seen something of his sister in the witch the day he’d met her, and there’d definitely been a little pang in the pit of his stomach when he’d considered how he’d missed out on helping teach her when she’d come into her powers, but Cassie had definitely always been different. She was a friend as much as a student, a saving grace when they’d all been groping in the dark that Mikaelson had pitched them into. That meant she deserved him to stand up for her when she needed him, and the shop. He'd have been a hard hearted git to turn her out and send her back to the motel to the other witches. Linc might’ve seemed like a rough kid on the surface, but he didn’t seem like a bad kid. As though she’d expected him to think different, Cassie seemed to fold into herself a little. Nicky smiled faintly, full lips twitching up at the corners as Cassie finally looked up at him. It took her a minute and he’d been about to repeat it, but then she was grinning finally. ”Really,” he confirmed with a chuckle as she leapt up and threw herself at him. He hugged her back, patting her back before he drew back. ”I’ll make sure Darce doesn’t give you any trouble about it,” he promised. There was bound to be some huffing about it, but he knew Darcey wouldn’t see her out on the street, especially if her knew the full story. The cat might be the harder part of the sell, but they’d handle that too. ”Both of ya are welcome,” he mumbled, bending to rub a hand over Olive’s back as the cat rubbed around his legs. Maybe this place needed a little of the charm of a cat sleeping in the window. If Cassie could teach her not to knock things off the counters and tables, that’d be even better.
”Yeah,” Nicky drawled softly as Cassie seemed to hesitate over the idea of it being a pied à terre for two. His brows drew together faintly. He’d been trying to work through a curriculum of sorts, just like his dad had done with them, and familiars had been a part of it. Maybe he should’ve realised that was who Olive was meant to be, but he hadn’t put the pieces together before Cassies sheepish explanation now had them all clicking into place. ”Cats can be arseholes,” he warned. He nodded all the same, eyeing the cat a little more dubiously now before his lips curved. ”I guess she didn’t get to voice her opinion then, but,” Nicky muttered with a paused. He bent down and fixed a steely look on Olive. ”She probably knows where her bread’s buttered and doesn’t wanna end up out on the streets again. Maybe you just need to give it time. You should take to whoever you adopted her from. I guess you can’t say you’re tryin’ to get her to help with magic spells, but they might be able to give you some pointers on helpin’ her like bein’ with ya a little more.” Olive got one more scritch and then he was straightening up. One way or another, the cat seemed to be here for the immediate future at least. Nicky brushed fur off of his hands then tipped his head towards the kettle. ”I’ll make myself a quick cuppa and then I’ll head out front. Get some more kip if you want. I’ll handle openin’.” He’d been the one to turn up super early after all. Nicky brewed up, then carrying his cup, slipped back out the curtain, leaving the room to go dark behind him.
