One of these days he’d be the one called away from dinner by work. They hadn’t even got to dessert either.
Ares flopped back in the booth, lifting a hand in farewell as his brother scrambled towards the front of the Diner. He was still talking a mile a minute to whoever was on the other end when the door swung shut behind him. It looked like Eros’ easy weekend was getting off to a busy start. And his was dead in the water for the moment.
Puffing out a breath, he glanced down at the watch on his wrist. The night was still young. If he had been on the schedule for this evening they’d already have been out on the streets, rolling around like a visible warning to behave. Maybe they’d have caught someone speeding, or a fool who got behind the wheel after spending his pay packet in somewhere like the Grill before they decided to drive themselves home instead of picking up a cab. Your normal sleepy Mystic Falls night – hopefully. There weren’t many quiet nights around here, not when the town was full of things that could raise mischief in a particularly bloody and violent way.
The shiver rolled down Ares’ spine as he waved down a passing waitress. He smiled up at her and tipped his head back towards the counter, where the pie he’d been planning on ordering for dessert sat beneath its glass cloche. Eros might’ve been messing out but it didn’t mean he had to. ”Can I get a slice of that chocolate crème pie to go and the bill? Thanks.” Of course, Eros hadn’t stopped to pay for dinner like he’d been planning to. If it wasn’t for the fact that his brother was as honest as the day was long, he might’ve thought that he’d done it on purpose. He’d have rather lost a limb than even joke about that sort of thing though – superstition ran deep in the family (and for good reason).
Five minutes later Ares was strolling out onto the street, the box containing his slice of pie clutched in one hand. He’d get home, maybe have a beer – the one they would’ve probably gotten after dinner – and work his way through the slab of rich chocolate and buttery pastry. Maybe after he’d start picking through his list of stuff left to do on the house, but maybe this was the weekend he’d finally take a break from it. The interior was mostly finished now, there was still the fence to put up around the yard though, the lights and cameras that he wouldn’t do without – he liked his privacy out there, but he wasn’t crazy.
Dark brows drew together as he strolled along, mentally picking his way down the list before he’d even reached his car at the end of the block. Of course, once the thought had been acknowledged his brain had latched onto it like a steel trap.
Clunk.
His head rocketed up, his eyes narrowing as he took a half step back to stare into the narrow slot between two cars. A figure stood there, not exactly out of place on a summer night in a town where folks liked to gather on the square until late. There’d been that sound though. ”Is everything alright?” Ares asked lightly. His body language was already contradicting his tone, his shoulders stiffening like he was ready to reach for a weapon that was locked in his truck instead of sitting on his hip.

With the school year coming to an end Adelina had more free time on her hands than she’d had for a while and the truth was that she had found herself at a bit of a loose end. Her dads were working and Ela and Elias both had plans so she was left to amuse herself for a while which never ended well. She knew that she could call Landon or one of her friends and see if they were free to hang out but she was pretty sure that those who were in relationships were spending their free time with their other halves while Landon and Raf were spending the day together. Needless to say Adelina was getting a little bored and she knew that she needed to find something to amuse herself for a while and stop her from going crazy. In the end she decided to stop by the fire house to see her dads and grandpa for a while and it was then that her dad asked if she could take the car and run a few errands for him. Adelina had her licence of course, her dad had encouraged her to start driving as soon as she was old enough so she could get around on her own when she needed to, and while she didn’t have her own car she was able to borrow his when she needed it. After struggling to think of something to do, Adelina was glad to have something keep her busy for a while. She stayed at the fire house until their next call came in and after telling them to stay safe and smiling as her dad kissed the top of her head and promised that they would, Adelina took off. She knew that her dads were probably just trying to give her something to do but the truth was that she appreciated it. She could have stayed home and worked on a new song with Milo but she had the whole summer ahead of her so she knew that she didn’t want to end up doing too much too soon. Heading around town doing what she needed to do, Adelina pulled into a space outside the cafe and as she stopped the car a clunking noise came and she groaned. “No, no, no. Please don’t do this,” she breathed, knowing that if there was a problem with it then chances were that she wasn’t going to know how to fix it. She knew that it couldn’t be something that she had done because everything had seemed fine while she was driving and she knew that she hadn’t hit something but clearly something was wrong and she could already feel herself starting to worry about what that was. Adelina started checking the car to see if there was anything obviously wrong with it. She couldn’t see anything and she looked up as she heard a voice before shaking her head. “I don’t think so, especially not if you heard it too,” she admitted, recognising the guy as a police officer. She hadn’t met him personally but she had seen him around town. “My dad let me borrow his car but it just made that noise and I have no idea why. It’s a new car, it shouldn’t be making noises like that,” she explained. “I don’t suppose you know anything about cars, do you?”ARES PATERA

At multiple points during the refurbishment Eros had referred to him as a jack of no trades, definitely not a master of any. It was the usual brotherly needling, Eros had benefited from his skills with a screwdriver or a paint brush often enough to know that if he didn’t know how to do something now then he’d teach himself. Ares Patera was so much more than his namesake, although he’d have patted himself on the back for being a damn good soldier too. You didn’t survive in battle for so long, or rise so far up the ladder without the ability to learn and adapt. That was exactly what he’d done in Mystic Falls.
Faces had become familiar over the years that he’d served as a deputy here. The kids that waved as he walked through the square on the weekends, the ones who’d holler ‘officer Patera! Hai!’ across the road at him. The teenagers at the high school who gave terse nods, not wanting to admit to being friendly with a cop. People who worked in the businesses that clustered around the square – who’d taken so much of his hard working cash since he’d decided to shoulder the burden of a house that was within yards of being reclaimed by the woods when he’d taken it on. Ares figured that all stood him in good stead with the job and making a difference in the community, but it wasn’t fool proof. The girl he saw standing by the vehicle as he shuffled around the back of it to see what was going on.
One of these days curiosity was gonna kill this cat, but not today. The girl wasn’t looking panicked at least, this wasn’t the sort of urgent that tended to crop up in this town – like something fanged and ferocious painting the town red, literally. Ares frowned faintly at her, the corners of his mouth tipped up at the corners. ”You sure it came from your car?” It’d sounded like it to him, but the curb was busy, sound carried. And if it walked like a duck and quacked you could pretty much give up on any sort of complicated explanation. It had sounded like her car and most probably was.
Ares grinned at her, trying to knock the over-confident edge out of it. ”I’m not a mechanic, but I can take a look if you want. Might be something simple. Did you feel like you ran over anything when you pulled the car in here?” He doubted she had, or she would’ve led with that. If he’d been in her shoes he would’ve been freaking out about wrecking his dad’s car. They’d been comfortable enough financially, but his dad had taken care of his car like it was a fourth child, making sure it was pristine, even with his three heathens filling up the back seat.
He set the box containing his pie down on the hood of the car behind him, then moved around the vehicle – he wasn’t about to risk melting pie oozing onto the top of the girl’s dad’s car. ”Let me look under it, see if I can spot anything. I’m officer Patera.” Ares nodded to the girl, hoping there was some reassurance in that. You never knew how low people would stoop with setting up a situation just so they could manipulate it to their advantage. He dropped to one knee beside the car before he bowed lower, squinting into the darkness beneath the vehicle to see if there was some random chunk of metal she might’ve hit or signs of damage to the underside.

Adelina was glad that summer was finally upon them but if she was honest she was already at a bit of a loss as to what to do with her free time. Ela and Elias were both out and her dads were at work so it meant that she had the house to herself. Eli had already spent a bit of time working on a new song and she had taken Milo out for a walk but after that she knew that she needed something different to do with her time. Eli had never liked being bored, she was always happier when she had something to do with her time and she had ended up walking to the firehouse to see her dads. She knew that they hadn’t minded, they had always made it clear that she and her siblings were welcome to stop by any time and seeing her grandpa and uncle was definitely a bonus. Her dad had given her the chance to have something to do, though, and as the next call came in she took off. She had promised that she would run some errands for him and he had given her the keys to his car so she could do that but as she pulled into a space the car made a sound that really didn’t sound good. She hadn’t expected anyone to come over and ask if everything was alright and as the man asked if she was sure the noise had come from her car, Adelina nodded. “Pretty sure, I heard it right when I stopped the car and I don’t know what else it could be,” she admitted. She knew that she could be wrong but she honestly didn’t think that she was and she had no idea what it could be. The man seemed pretty confident and that alone was enough to make Adelina feel a bit better. She felt like she had seen him around before but she couldn’t remember where from. She didn’t get the feeling that it was a bad thing, though, so she knew that she had to give him a chance to take a look. “I’d really appreciate that, thank you,” she said sincerely. “I definitely didn’t run anything over and I didn’t hit anything either,” she explained. She was always a careful driver and that wasn’t going to change. “Thanks. I thought I recognised you, I’ve seen you around and my dads have mentioned you before,” she admitted, pulling her phone out of her pocket and turning on the torch before crouching down next to him and shining it under the car to try and give him some light. “I’m Adelina Alvarez.” Her family often ended up working with the police on calls so she knew the names of most of them already even if she hadn’t met some of them personally yet. It also helped that her uncle was in a relationship with a cop so she heard a lot about Tommy’s colleagues from Diego as well. ARES PATERA

In a town where it seemed as though there was a supernatural side to just about everything that happened, a plain old mechanical problem almost felt like a relief. No witches wandering around the woods, almost getting themselves shot. No detectives wandering out there almost getting themselves fried by lightning either. No sticky situations encroaching into his space, driving him mad with that itch that could have his temper enflamed with a single mental scratch. Maybe some part of him would end up missing all of this if it got too quiet, but for now Ares was glad to have a problem that he might be able to fix with just his hands. That had been one of the blessings about the cabin. It was a break away from the job, from the constant watchfulness that came with that territory. When you were slapping on paint or laying tile in the master bath there wasn’t the room in your head to start worrying about anything else. If he ever finally finished working on the place he was gonna be screwed without that escape.
Ares nodded slowly as the girl gave him the answer he’d almost known was coming. It had been the car. That started narrowing down the possibilities, although it didn’t guarantee that the options were any better for it. ”Sounds like you might be right,”{/b] he murmured. And that meant he was likely to end up grubby, taking a trip under the vehicle to try and work out what it was. ”It’s no trouble,” he assured her. ”It’s better we figure it out now instead of finding the car breaking down when you’re halfway home. Hmm.” The sound Ares made wasn’t exactly dubious, but it was curious. He’d have laid money on something being dumped at the curb, but if she was as careful as it sounded like she was, then she’d have seen it coming. Mystic Falls was too neat and tidy to have any trash sitting around for long anyway. The smile on his face brightened as she confirmed that she’d seen him around. Mystic Falls constantly felt a thousand times smaller than Miami and this was just proof that practically everybody knew everybody here. ”I’ll have to tell my partner that I’m starting to get famous around here.” Claire probably would’ve laughed hard enough to end up rolling around in the road. Infamous maybe, especially after the scene with the damn cat. He winged a brow, glancing up at her as he shuffled down onto his back. ”Your dads work at the station?” Dads, like a couple. Hmm. There wasn’t anybody he was sure matched that description there, but he’d been dense about that sort of thing before and it wasn’t like he’d been Mr Sociable with most of the people working at the station. He had Claire, he had Eros, that was enough (especially when there was a chance wider social gatherings would end up putting him toe to toe with Brooke again.
Ares flattened himself and started to shuffle under the car, looking around in the thin beam of light to see if there was anything obvious. ”Alvarez…” he muttered. ”Like the firefighters?” That might’ve explained how her dads knew about him. Fire and police had a tendency to turn up at the same scenes and his tunnel vision on the job wasn’t bad enough that he hadn’t bothered to get to know some of the firefighters.

Adelina was used to dealing with supernatural problems with the help of her friends but the truth was that when it came to cars, she really didn’t have a clue. Her dad had taught her the basics but when it came to noises like the one the car had just made, she didn’t even know where to start. She knew that she could call either of her dads and see if they were able to help but they were at work right now so she knew that she didn’t want to trouble them if she could help it. It was a new car so it shouldn’t be anything major but she hadn’t liked the sound it had made so she knew that the last thing she wanted right now was to take any chances. There was a part of Adelina that was already regretting agreeing to run these errands for her dad today, she could have stayed home with Milo instead and worked on a new song but she knew that it was perhaps a little sad to spend all of her break holed up at home with the dog. Normally she would spend time with one of her siblings or one of her friends but that day they were all busy so she’d found herself at a bit of a loose end. She had ended up hanging out with her dads at the firehouse for a while but then a call had come in and she’d realised it was time to make herself scarce. She wouldn’t be surprised if her dad had given her a list of things to do that day so she would have something to do with her time but the truth was she liked having a purpose and she knew that she didn’t want to let him down. Unfortunately that meant that she needed the car to be working and right now it wasn’t so she just had to hope that the man could help her. “This is one time when I really don’t want to be right,” Adelina admitted. All she wanted to do was complete the errands her dad had given her and get the car back in one piece but so far the latter seemed to be much easier said than done. “That’s true, then I really would be stuck,” she nodded. Truth be told she didn’t really want to risk driving the car again until she knew what had caused that noise. She was a dragon so she knew that she would be fine if anything happened but she didn’t want anyone else to end up getting hurt. She was always so careful whenever she drove so she was certain that she hadn’t hit anything but that didn’t really help narrow down what it could be at all and she would be lying if she said that didn’t worry her. As Ares said he would have to tell his partner that he was starting to become famous around town, Adelina couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m not sure I’d go that far, my dads like to make sure my siblings and I know the names of some good people to turn to if we need it. I guess they were right about you after all,” she said, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at him. She wasn’t sure how many other people knew his name but she certainly did and her brother and sister did as well. After Gabriela had been attacked the day Ethan had come into their lives their dad had become more protective of them and he’d made sure they knew some of the people they could count on around town. Those weren’t necessarily all people who knew about the supernatural since her family liked to keep their heads down as much as possible and avoid drawing too much attention to themselves but it definitely helped. As he asked if they worked at the station, Adelina shook her head. “They work at the firehouse,” she explained. Adelina tried to shine the light as best the could so he could see underneath the car as he moved under it and she nodded as he asked if her dads were firefighters. “That’s right. It’s a bit of a family thing, my dads and grandpa are firefighters and my uncle is a firefighter and paramedic,” she said, not sure whether that would help ring any bells for him. ARES PATERA

Between his time in the Marines and in the Sheriff’s department, Ares liked to think he’d become a jack of all trades. He was the guy you could call when you had some loose boards in your porch, or when your taps started dripping. Alright, cars added an extra layer of complicated mechanics (and electronics) to the mix, but at the very least he knew how to give someone a jump start when he needed to. Maybe he’d have been able to pull the money together to pay someone else to deal with all of that for him. It would’ve cleared out his bank account more than it already had, but it would’ve been easier. Unluckily for him, easy had never been the path he’d wanted to head down. In high school he’d thrown himself into the ROTC because he’d wanted to be out there in the world making a difference. He’d bought a junker of a house because he’d liked the idea of putting his own stamp on it. He’d stopped when he’d heard that noise today because he’d figured he could lend a hand with whatever the hell it was.
Frowning at the car, Ares puffed out a breath as the girl spoke. He felt that hard. Most of the time he liked being right about things, even if that left him coming off like an arrogant jackass. Could anyone blame him for wanting to be able to predict things in life? Especially when problems like this came his way. Being a psychic instead of a warlock would’ve been helpful right now. ”Let’s just hope you’re not,” Ares said lightly. ”We’ll make sure the car runs properly before you head out. I’m not gonna leave you stuck here with it broken down. Worst case scenario I can give you a lift home.” There was a garage he’d used in town a time or two. They’d probably come out with a tow truck if they needed to. Maybe the guys there would’ve given the girl a ride home too, but he’d definitely feel better about doing that part himself. Having a badge probably didn’t make him one hundred percent trustworthy, but he figured in these circumstances the girl was likely to know that he wasn’t a threat because of it. Apparently her parents had already taken care of that part of things for him. He’d have said that his reputation around town was likely to be that of a hothead, but if her parents called him good people then he wasn’t about to argue about it. Ares nodded, one corner of his mouth kicking up higher. ”I’d say that’s a smart move. Mystic Falls isn’t always safe. It helps knowing who to call on when stuff happens.” His parents had done something similar in Miami, although most of their connections there had been on the other side of the legal profession – the sort he and Eros could’ve called on if there ever screwed up badly enough to get run in for something.
From Adelina’s comments there was a chance that her dads worked for the sheriff too. It would’ve explained how they’d known about him. He racked his brain, trying to figure out who they might be, but she cut off his train of thought almost immediately by saying the firehouse. Within seconds he’d pulled their surname out of his mental files. Ares made a low sound in his throat, nodding at her. ”Yeah, I know them,” he assured her. ”That sort of stuff tends to run in the blood. I don’t think my dad was too happy when I broke with our family tradition and joined the ROTC. He’s a lawyer, my mom worked in a lawyer’s office. Me and my brother ended up Marines.” He would’ve said they were all in the same wheelhouse, but maybe not close enough. ”You said the noise happened the second you turned off the engine?” Ares asked as he squirmed deeper, trying to get a look at each of the tires, just in case something was caught up in them.

Adelina knew that there were more important things to worry about than something being wrong with a car, after all she and her friends were still trying to figure out a way to stop Raziel after he killed Hope and Josie and made it clear that he was going to wipe out everyone around the world who was supernatural, but right now she couldn’t deny that she was worried. Her dad had let her take the car so she could run some errands and Adelina couldn’t deny that she liked feeling useful but she hadn’t expected this. It was a new car so there weren’t meant to be any problems with it like there might be with an older one but it seemed like the car had something different in mind. Adelina honestly had no idea what was wrong with it but she knew that she didn’t want to have to tell her dad that it needed to be repaired so soon after he got it so she hoped it wouldn’t come to that. “Fingers crossed,” Adelina agreed as the guy said they should hope that she wasn’t right this time. Normally Adelina liked being right about things but this time she definitely didn’t want to be so she hoped that there wasn’t anything badly wrong with the car. “I really appreciate that but I don’t want to put you out anymore than I already am. I can walk,” Adelina assured him. It already meant so much that he was willing to help her with the problem in the first place, the last thing she wanted was to take up anymore of his time especially when he was off duty. Chances were he had plans and she knew that she didn’t want to keep him from them. If it came down to it she knew that she could just head back to the fire house and hang out with her dads until the end of their shift, then get them to take a look at the car afterwards. She knew that her dad had always liked working on cars, it was a hobby for him so he might be able to figure out what was wrong with it, but it had been a while since she had last seen him work on one and there were so many other things going on that she really hoped she wouldn’t have to worry him with it if she could help it. “You’re right about that, there always seems to be something going on here,” Adelina admitted. She knew that chances were he didn’t know about what she and her friends were up against with Raziel but even without that there was always something going on in the town and knowing who to turn to was definitely a good thing. Adelina knew that she could take care of herself, even without being a dragon to fall back on she knew how to fight, but having Officer Patera there was still enough to make her feel better. “I thought you might,” Adelina admitted as he said he knew her dads. She knew that the police were sometimes called to the same incidents that her dads were so it was easy for them to cross paths. With her uncle dating a cop there was a connection there as well. “Both of you really broke from tradition, I bet that was a shock to them,” she admitted. Some parents were like that, they wanted their kids to follow in their footsteps and pursue the same career but Adelina knew that it wasn’t like that for her dads. Both of them had decided to become fire fighters on their own and that was how they found each other again so many years after Ethan died. As for her uncle and grandpa, they both decided to become fire fighters after seeing how much it meant to her dad. “My brother might end up deciding to follow in their footsteps but my sister and I aren’t planning on it,” she admitted. Adelina knew that none of them expected her or her siblings to go down that road themselves and she was certain that they would support them no matter what they decided to do. Her passion was music while for Gabriela it was dance. As for Elias, swimming had been his passion up until the day he was almost drowned but she’d seen a spark in him after he helped a family out of a fire a while back so she knew that she wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to give it a try for real. As he asked about the noise, Adelina nodded. “That’s right. Can you see anything that might have caused it?”ARES PATERA

His parents hadn’t been a hundred percent behind their sons when they’d gone to basic training. Maybe they’d held onto some hope that one or both of them would quit instead of fighting through training far more difficult than they’d received in JROTC. Others had, injury knocking some out, exhaustion and resignation taking others out. At Eros’ side Ares had stood firm though, figuring that after all he’d been through, putting his life on the line for his country wouldn’t be hard. Hell, if he’d managed to keep up his GPA through three and a half years of school, it would be a cake walk. It turned out he hadn’t been wrong. They’d gone into battle in places that felt like Hell on earth, but each time him and Eros had come out the other side of it. Being a Marine had felt like the one thing he’d been able to do right. Apparently that had stretched to being a cop. Maybe some woulda scoffed about it, but Ares liked to think that dedication had made him a better person too.
Others might’ve shrugged and told the girl she was screwed before walking away. There was a decent chance they’d have been right, a fix for whatever had happened beyond them, but he’d never been one to step away from a challenge, or from somebody in need. Ares lifted a hand, immediately brushing off Adelina’s argument that she could walk. He could already imagine the disappointment he would have seen in his γιαγιά’s eyes at the thought that he’d let a teenager walk home alone after something like this. She knew what dangers were out there and Mystic Falls was worst than most places that way. ”You’re not putting me out. It’s probably on my way home anyway, Mystic Falls isn’t exactly a huge town.” Which would’ve made walking home possible, if not the safest idea. At worst it would just be a few minutes out of his way and he wouldn’t feel like he’d abandoned someone when they really needed a hand.
Warning local kids about the threats in Mystic Falls always felt like a double edged sword. For a time Sheriff Forbes had used him as an outreach officer, sending him into the local high school as a punishment. It’d turned out he was pretty good at it too, not hating it as much as he would’ve thought. Ares let out a weary chuckle. ”It’s definitely not as quiet as I thought it was gonna be when I moved here. My brother kinda mis-sold the place.” It could’ve been the biggest hellhole on the map and he still would’ve come here to be with his brother. There was nothing more important than family, and it looked like Adelina had a good one. He’d met her dads enough times to know they were good people. Ares hummed low in his throat, bobbing his head as she said she’d thought he might recognize them. ”Our jobs tend to cross over often enough that I know a lot of people over there.” There were plenty of times when he wished they hadn’t.
”Just a little,” Ares admitted. He smirked up at her before he slid deeper under the car. ”Neither one of them was too keen on the idea of us even joining ROTC. I had to bargain my way into it. By the time basic training rolled around I think they’d given up on us going to college. They’ve got a doctor in the family now though. That’s gotta count for something right?” The joke was obvious in his voice. By now his parents always said how proud they were of their boys, right before they said how Clio would be going to college with no room for argument. ”Seen enough of it to realise it’s not for you?” Ares asked, scanning the underside of the car in the beam of his phone flashlight. ”Maybe.” He squirmed a little further. ”Your break pad looks a little weird. When was the last time you had them changed?” Given the angle it seemed to be at, the metallic gleam he could see when his light caught it, there was a chance either the break pad had worn down unevenly, or she’d hit something when she’d parked and it’d caught up in the caliper somehow.

Adelina would be the first to admit that she was at a bit of a loose end that day. The school holidays were coming up fast and finals were over which meant that she didn’t have to worry about classes or homework but it also meant that she had a lot of free time on her hands and she wasn’t always the best at finding things to do with her time. She enjoyed spending time working on songs but that day she hadn’t been able to come up with anything she felt was good so she had opted for spending some time with her dads instead. She knew that her dad was just humouring her when he asked her to run some errands but it meant that she had something she could do to keep herself busy while he was out on a call so she was grateful to have something to do. She knew that she was going to have to come up with something to do over the summer but at the moment she wasn’t quite there yet so she was making do as best she could. Her dad had let her borrow his car so she could run those errands and it was a new one so she knew that it should have been fine but the moment she heard the noise coming from it, she knew that something was wrong. She could have called her dads and they would have insisted on picking her up and sorted something out with the car but she knew that she didn’t want to worry them if she could help it so she hoped she would be able to at least be able to run the errands she’d been asked to do and tell them about it when they got home after work. She really could walk home if it came to that but Officer Patera seemed adamant that he was going to give her a lift home if he couldn’t get the car running. The last thing Adelina wanted was to inconvenience him anymore than she already was but he didn’t seem to want to take no for an answer and she knew that it would be rude to argue so she was going to have to go along with it. “Alright, in that case thank you,” she said sincerely. It meant a lot to her that he was willing to look at the car and she really hoped that it would be an easy fix but she wasn’t sure. She knew absolutely nothing about cars so the truth was that she wouldn’t even know where to start looking for a way of fixing the problem. Her dads always took care of anything like that and she knew that she perhaps took that for granted a little but she definitely wasn’t going to do that again. “I think a lot of people have found that. It’s a great place to live in spite of everything though,” Adelina shrugged. She had grown up in Mystic Falls so she loved the town and to her she knew that it would always feel like home. The Salvatore School had proved to be a safe haven for Adelina, it was a place where she could come into her abilities without having to worry about anyone thinking she was a freak. There weren’t many dragons at the school but all of the students were supernatural and most of the staff were as well so that definitely made things that much easier. She, her family and the others at the school knew what Mystic Falls was really like but she wasn’t sure whether Officer Patera did so she could only imagine what it must look like to him if he was still in the dark about it all. “I thought you might, I know my uncle loves it when his partner Tommy turns up to the same calls he’s at,” Adelina nodded. She often heard her uncle talking about it and she couldn’t deny that it was incredibly cute. It was handy in a way though as it meant that she had heard about Officer Patera before and he knew her dads so that definitely put her at ease. “Definitely,” she grinned. “It sounds like they got what they wanted from one of you and you got what you wanted as well. Seems like a good outcome to me,” she offered. She knew that his parents had probably worried about him and she couldn’t blame them for that. Her dads had fought together in World War II and if she was honest she was so glad that those days were behind them. They were both supernatural and it would take a lot to kill either of them but she had come so close to losing her dad when he saved a young boy from a wendigo and the mine collapsed before he could get out and she knew that she didn’t want anything like that to happen to anyone she loved again. “I admire them for doing it but I don’t see myself running into burning buildings for a living,” she shrugged. “Music is my passion so I want to try and do something in that field but I guess we’ll see,” she added. She loved singing and writing songs but whether or not she would be able to make a real go of it remained to be seen. For now she just wanted to focus on making it through school though, she had her whole life ahead of her to think about that. As he asked about the brake pads, Adelina thought about it for a moment. “I don’t think they have been. It’s a new car so it shouldn’t need new ones yet,” she answered, pretty sure that was right. She really didn’t know much about cars but the car wasn’t even a year old yet and hadn’t been used for many long journeys so she knew the brakes should be fine. “Do you think that’s what made the noise?”ARES PATERA

So many of the manners his parents had tried to teach him had been swept away by his impatience over the years, but there was enough of their lessons left lurking in the back of his mind that he would never have left someone stranded at the side of the road. It didn’t matter that they were right on the square, or if it was a 40 year old man or a teenaged kid, the result was always gonna be the same – he’d try and do what he could to make sure they got where they needed to go. Ares would’ve laid money on Eros, or even Clio, doing just the same. They all took the idea of community seriously and he’d poured that right into the job after he’d decided on heading to the academy. This was his town, the people in it his to protect, whether it was by dealing with the trouble that seemed to bubble up here on an almost daily basis, or just watching out for folks.
”Any time,” Ares assured Adelina as she thanked him. It really wasn’t a problem to make sure she got home. He wasn’t exaggerating when he’d said her home was probably on his way back to the cabin anyway. Even if it was in the other direction, it probably wouldn’t add more than a few minutes to his drive. The first time he’d looked at Mystic Falls on a map, he’d had to scroll way in to even see if it in the first place. He’d thought Eros was crazy for deciding on the smallest possible place to settle down in. They’d grown up in Miami, had spent more than a decade in bustling military camps, the quiet in Mystic Falls would drive him crazy in five minutes flat. Thankfully he’d been wrong, the place and its people (barring a few he wasn’t gonna think about) had grown on him.
”It’s got its charms,” Ares agreed. ”It feels like the kind of place people settle to raise their families.” Especially if they were the kind of people looking to settle among those who were just like them. The corner of Arres’ mouth kicked up. ”It’s the same when I run into my brother over at the hospital when I’m working. I don’t know how mutual the feeling is though.” Did worry spike through Eros every time, like he was bringing trouble with him into the ER? Probably, although he’d know his skull was too thick for him ever to be in too much medical trouble himself. Their parents had probably been flooded with relief when they’d finally decided to leave the Army, even the police academy had to seem safe in comparison. ”Seems it to me too. If my sister ends up in law school they’d probably see it as all their dreams have come true.” Ares chuckled, but he knew he wasn’t that far off the truth. Marriage and kids would just be the icing on the cake after that, the new generation always bound to end up in their grandparents’ yard, raised on barbecue the same way they had been.
Just as he’d never been able to picture himself in a suit and tie, standing in front of a judge in court (even now he hated doing it for the job), it seemed as though Adelina couldn’t imagine herself running into burning buildings. It took a certain sort of courage to do that, and the sort of passion that kept you going even in the face of tragedy. ”I think I’d probably take fire fighting over music, but I don’t imagine you’d butcher a tune on a recorder the same way I did in grade school,” Ares admitted with a grin. ”Good luck with it, I’m sure your dads would be proud either way.” Although music was certain a far safer vocation than firefighting. They’d probably thought their kid was pretty safe in their new car too, but things happened all the same. ”Maybe. I can’t tell, but if they’re not worn you might’ve hit something at some point on the way into town. I’d probably get someone to look at them before you drove it again, just to better safe than sorry.” It wasn’t like he could jack the car up here and really start digging around for her.
