━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI COULDN’T BREATHE. IT FELT LIKE HER WHOLE FUCKING world was crumbling around her, like her chest was being caved out by the man it belonged to. She’d scampered back to his bedroom with her tail between her legs (not literally), and gathered up her shit. Changed out of his t-shirt, then tucked it into her bag (while pretending to leave it on the floor), and walked out with her head down, only hesitating once to see if she could say something else that would likely make it worse.
She didn’t. She left, practically staggered down the hallway to the elevator, and cried with her forehead pressed to her steering wheel in the parking lot. Roxxi cried on the way home, too, an ugly scream-cry that rocked her whole body and was almost too dangerous to drive while it went on.
She’d lost him. It seemed like it was for good this time, too. All for one stupid mistake━for banging his brother when all she wanted was to get back at her fucking uncle for what he’d done. Maybe it wasn’t forever, but it felt like it; she had no capacity to be positive right now. All she knew was that Chase had kicked her out, and that look on his face when she tried to touch him was the worst thing she’d ever seen.
He’d backed away. She’d fucked up too many times and now he didn’t want to touch her anymore.
On top of everything, she was losing her anchor.
Roxxi squeezed her hands around the skinny steering wheel, not feeling anything as her claws dug into the bottoms of her palms. She only registered the blood trickling down her arms and pooling on her thighs, soaking the fabric that covered them. Roxxi cursed under her breath, parking and slipping out of her car, holding her bag to her chest as she stumbled towards her building’s front door. She barely held it together until she was inside her apartment, and then everything (except Roxxi, surprisingly) found the floor.
She cried and paced her living room for a few minutes, wanting to take this on alone but feeling like she was falling apart. She couldn’t handle it anymore. This was worse than anything else━and Roxxi had experienced her father dying directly in front of her. Maybe that was why; because Chase was the first man she’d let close since then.
She almost called her sister. Giorgia was a ton of help during the issue with the video, but Roxxi still wasn’t sure how close they were, and it was hard to forgive her sister after spending so many years estranged.
Instead, Roxxi called her other sister. She’d have to keep this under wraps━the shifter freak-out that was quickly getting away from her━but it was Mystic Falls, right? Maybe it wouldn’t be so weird. And Jo struck her as the kind of woman who’d seen a lot of shit and wasn’t surprised by much.
“C-Can you please come to my apartment? If you aren’t busy. I━Chase broke up with me, I think, and I━” Most of what she said next was garbled between cries. Roxxi hung up at some point, likely mid-sentence, and stumbled towards the bathroom. Her spine snapped the wrong way suddenly, and Roxxi cried out, remembering the (unwelcome) pain of shifting just as it’d been throughout most of her life.
As it would continue to be without Chase.
She curled forward again, and collapsed to her knees on the floor, barely getting the bathtub’s faucet turned on before another limb snapped out of place. The blood from her arms smudged the edge of the tub and the floor, and Roxxi cried again, wondering how she could’ve been so stupid.
She didn’t blame Chase for realizing he’d fallen in love with someone who didn’t deserve it, and for tearing away when he recognized his mistake, but why did any of this have to happen? Was she really the bad kind of Braschi offspring, the ones destined to adorn her uncle’s last name? Should she just give up and go back to New Orleans because it was inevitable she would become like them?
By the time her door opened, Roxxi had managed to crawl into the bathtub’s cool water and begin to calm down. She wrapped her arms around herself and tried not to contemplate her heritage and her last name, though the thoughts seeped in anyway.
Chase had been her anchor her whole life, and he meant something different lately, but now he was gone. She had nothing to hold onto, to keep her human and stop her from shifting, and the cold bath wouldn’t fix her for long.
“Jo?” She croaked, “I’m sorry I’m━” Naked, laying in my bathtub when I knew you were coming over. “━I can’t stop. I ruined everything. Mikey told him, he told Chase we slept together, even though I said I didn’t want to. I said━I said it didn’t matter, and it doesn’t, but he wouldn’t even look at me.” The last few words ended in harsh sobs, and she squeezed her eyes closed as they flashed amber, balled her hands into fists to hide the claws. “He threw the video back in my face like I’d done it just to upset him. I knew it hurt him, and I know it’s different that it’s his brother, but he━I lost him.” Roxxi cried again, uncaring about her eyes now as she looked up at Jo helplessly, silently begging for her surrogate big sister to make everything better again. To fix what was beyond repair… because of Roxxi’s own idiocy.

Mornings had always been her time. It didn’t matter that most folks woke with dawn before alarm clocks had started to shriek them out of bed, or that kids had always been kids, waking up to bolt out the door, chasing after their father as he’d headed for his smithy early. When dawn had just started to lend its pearly touch to the sky, she’d been up. A time to sneak down to the stables, to scratch her fingers over the noses of the horses who still bore North Wind’s blood, to curl in a corner of the settle in their home, the fire warming her feet as she went through the ceremony of brewing the tea the English still had no real notion of, those little bricks of black leaves she still traded with those who made the arduous journey from the east. Small moments of peace to look forward or back.
Jo curled up in a corner of the couch, a cup of tea in one hand – over seven hundred years and she still couldn’t bring herself to make that leap to coffee – yesterday’s newspaper spread over her lap, not that she was seeing what was on the page. Still a time of contemplation, to wonder how to pick her way forward on that path she hadn’t seen looping back on itself. She hadn’t imagine that she would find Magnus on it again in a million years. All those years she had suspected that he had been as she was, but that was no guarantee that he would survive. Philippa had died, deservedly, and it could so easily have been Magnus buried cold and grey too. She lifted the cup, swallowing down some of the heat convulsively. She would picture it now, not when they were both here in Mystic Falls with a second chance – perhaps a dozenth – in front of them.
Her fingers would curl around the opportunity as surely as they did cup, when she got up the nerve to do it. If she didn’t, then Roxxi would surely find a way to make it happen – just to ensure that her second great love didn’t slip away from her without knowing how she felt. Tucking the cup against her chest, imparting heat to a heart that had started to beat as it hadn’t done for centuries when he had helped her from her car, Jo tipped her head back against the couch and tried to slot the possibilities into a neat little schedule. Too clinical, maybe she should go with spontaneity, channel her inner Roxxi.
Heat flared then, the blush surely enough to actually colour her cheeks when her phone buzzed beside her. Roxxi. At the crack of dawn, like a razor tongued fairy godmother to tell her how to stop second guessing herself. Just go for it, sleep with the man for God’s sake!
Setting her cup aside, Jo reached for the phone, swiping her thumb over the screen and grinning before the time registered. The sun was up now, but it was still early, too early for off hand calls. Worry bit deep, her other hand tightening in her robe as she answered. ”Hey …” The crack in Roxxi’s voice propelled her up from the couch before the rest of the request had even reached her. Bare feet padded fast across the rugs and into her bedroom. ”I’m never too busy for this, OK? I’ll be there in fifteen minutes, honey.” She tried to drift into reassurances, but what did you say when a friend had her heart torn out by their one great love?
Roxxi’s cries felt like were echoing in her ears as she scrambled into clothes and rushed out, the same way she had the night Lincoln had gone missing and Magnus had been standing just inside the doorway, fear and sadness etched into his face that she couldn’t brush away.
What was wrong with him? The question swept through to finally drown out Roxxi’s upset as she got into the car. Jo gritted her teeth against it, resisting the urge to make a pit stop on the way to fire that question right at Chase. She’s the best thing you could have, she loves you. Why would you break her heart? The crack of her hand across a fool’s face coming faster than the recollection of all that Roxxi had told her before. The video. Chase’s brother. One or the other perhaps the straw that broke that camel’s back while Roxxi’s heart shattered.
She took the stairs when she reached Roxxi’s building, moving faster than a human could’ve as she caught the faint scent of blood on the air. Fear tugged at her gut, left her breathless as she burst through Roxxi’s apartment door. Broken hearts drove you to do things you would never usually. The scent was stronger in the apartment, a trail that led her into Roxxi’s bathroom.
Jo stared at the streaks of blood that marred the tub and the floor, feeling just that cold greasy fear in her stomach instead of the hunger that would have hit uncontrollably centuries before. She shrugged off her coat, dropped her bag in the doorway and crossed to sink down next to the tub. ”No apologies,” she said softly, brushing Roxxi’s hair back from her face. Her aching heart twisted in her chest as Roxxi began to explain, all that she’d dreaded apparently coming to pass, leaving Chase unable to look past what had happened and it’d been his brother tossing that last straw in. ”It must have been a shock, to both of you.” It was a knife to the heart and that wasn’t a quick fix.
Crawling closer at Roxxi’s sobs, Jo wrapped an arm around Roxxi’s bare shoulders, drawing her in even as cried out again. Maybe it was Mikey she needed to slap for this. ”You haven’t lost him. Love doesn’t let go that easy and I know it is love for both of you. You don’t hurt this badly for the hots alone. He’s going to come back to you, he’s going to stop and think and realise that he can’t let you go.” Her throat ached at the words, the some possible future she imagined might have run through Kaegan’s mind while he prayed for the sickness that was supposedly claiming her to pass, so she could come home. She smiled, froze as Roxxi opened her eyes finally, looking up at her with those pale amber irises instead of her usual dark ones. Jo drew in a breath, trying to separate what Roxxi was from what she was going through. ”Roxxi … are you hurt? The blood … did something happen after you left?” Not out of grief perhaps, as she’d first worried, but out of the strain that pulled your system out of whack, that tore at you in ways most couldn’t imagine.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ EVEN THOUGH THE WORDS HAD COME FROM ROXXI’S MOUTH, IT was still a shock. She didn’t want Chase to know; he could’ve gone his whole life without knowing, and she’d told Mikey as much. That didn’t matter, though, because he was set on… fucking up their relationship or something. It didn’t matter that she’d helped him through his first full moon outside of prison or each of the ones following until he found out she was seeing Chase, she was still the enemy, and Mikey would rally against her whenever he saw fit. Sure, Chase had shoved him out the door as well, but he was still family━Chase would forgive him long before he did Roxxi. If he ever forgave her.
Because she was the outsider, the wh-re who’d jumped his brother, and maybe… it was better off like this. She wouldn’t keep hurting him if she wasn’t in his life.
Jo’s presence was welcome when Roxxi didn’t think anybody else’s would be. She could imagine Giorgia stomping in, cursing at her in Italian to get up and stop fucking whining over some man who was never good enough. But that was the reason she loved him most, and the reason he’d been her anchor all these years; the Agnellis couldn’t understand that he was better than them. After her father, he was the best, most valiant man she’d ever known.
“I-I said it.” She sniffled, then sucked in a breath through her teeth. “Mikey threatened… h-he was going to… so I said it first.” A childish push and shove to see who could reach the finish line first.
She dragged in another shaky fill of her lungs, trembling with it as Jo’s arm curled around her. Roxxi’s hand dragged up and almost out of the water, but she felt the scrape of her nails and knew better than to touch Jo. She didn’t care about revealing herself so much as she did hurting her best friend, her surrogate big sister.
“He-he’s said he loves me. Before.” Roxxi admitted, though she knew she’d never hear those words again. “But we… I told him again today, after I revealed what we did, and that’s when he told me to get out.” She sobbed, trying to regurgitate the words Chase had thrown at her without letting them rip open her throat. It was a losing battle. “He said, ‘You loved me enough not to tell me,’ as if I did it just to hurt him. I didn’t… Chase and I weren’t serious when I did it. I never thought it would become anything with him.” She sobbed, knowing she could speak freely, as Jo had been told more or less everything. Maybe not every small detail━she wouldn’t risk Chase’s safety like that━but the general story, and how Roxxi knew Chase and Mikey were related when she slept with the latter. But she’d always maintained that she never… she never knew it would come to this. Her plan had always been to stay as far from Chase as possible, protecting him at a distance, but she’d fallen in love and planned a family with him. Now all of that was ruined.
“Maybe he shouldn’t.” Roxxi puffed finally, and then she cried as the weight of the words settled on her, the realization that this was probably best━even though it was the opposite of what she wanted. “Maybe… maybe he’s safer now. Away from me. I won’t continue to put him in danger and break his heart. It never would have w-worked out… I can’t keep a secret from him, obviously,” She shook her head slowly, “He would have found out about my family and it would have been worse. It’s better now than later, when it’s harder to let go.” But she didn’t believe a word she was saying. And even now, it felt like her heart was being torn from her chest, hollowed out with the same hole that’d been there since before he filled her life. Only it was bigger now, as she’d never experienced a love like this. But it was gone, and Roxxi could only blame herself.
It took a moment for Roxxi to register what Jo was saying━the blood━and her dark brows furrowed, sliding down to the orange-tinted bath water. She could see the smears of blood on the tile and on the parts of the tub the water didn’t reach, and her eyes squeezed closed as they continued to burn amber. Jo was a welcome distraction for a long moment, but it would seep in again, and she prayed she wouldn’t put her friend in danger. She wanted to hold onto her father’s training, but every word she’d clutched to her chest after he died suddenly vanished, popping like bubbles in a summer breeze. “N-no, I…”
Roxanne lifted her hands from the water slowly, seeing the claws that had stayed extended from her nailbeds. She trembled, curling her fists in, then turned her inner forearms upward, watching them pierce the newly-healed skin of her palm. She hissed out a breath, extended her fingers again, and saw the half-moon cuts seal up slowly, making the source of the trails of blood dripping down her arms indetectable. “P-please don’t freak out, I can’t… I can’t control it anymore. And I can’t explain right now.” Roxxi sobbed softly, then turned her yellow eyes up to Jo once more, staring at her through tear-filled vision.

Magnus had loved Philippa, but the love of two good men didn’t negate the fact that she had been a manipulative bitch. She’d felt the woman’s hands close around her neck an instant before Philippa had snapped her neck. The Queen would’ve done anything possible to cover up her dirty little secret, including kill a woman. Turned as she was, she’d had no hope of revealing Philippa’s crimes without damning both herself and Magnus and the Queen had known it. Even now it put a bad taste in her mouth, tinged with the remembered tang of Philippa’s blood, forced past her lips. Honesty could get you hurt, but keeping the secret… They were words she would not speak aloud, for Roxxi’s sake.
Unlike Philippa, there hadn’t been a maliciousness behind Roxxi’s silent. She’d heard love in Roxxi’s voice, not madness, not anger and avarice. She could see what the truth had cost Roxxi and wished she could ease it as she’d done her sons’ heartbreaks when they were but children, whispering words in Mongolian to soothe them, threads of stories and song spilling out the same way they had done from her own mother when she was young. This wasn’t just a skinned knee though, it was harder to soothe a shattered heart.
Vindictiveness had never come naturally to her, but Jo wished she could pay Chase’s brother back with a taste of this – the adage about blood being thicker than water had endured because it was the truth. He had threatened Roxxi into speaking up about what had happened, perhaps to ease his own stinging conscience. Her hand brushed over Roxxi’s hair again, an absent gesture of comfort. ”He won’t blame you more for saying the words in the end,” she said softly. Perhaps it meant that Chase would be more likely to consider her version more the truth for it, even if those words had spilled up out of a deep well of guilt and heartache. On her knees at the side of the tub, Jo drew Roxxi in closer to her, feeling her tremble as she held her. This was no small case of the blues born of a heart that hadn’t been fully committed. Love could tear you to pieces, figuratively, literally … Her gaze dropped to the stains on the edge of the tub again, skittering back to narrow faintly with concern. ”He’ll remember that,” she promised. ”It’ll hurt for now, and maybe he was trying to sooth that sting for now, but it’ll ease and he’ll remember. I know he loves you too.” That much had been evident from all Roxxi had told her until now, until Mikey had pried the two of them apart.
Her arm tightened as Roxxi sobbed again, he cheek pressing against the top of Roxxi’s head. ”You didn’t, baby. You couldn’t have known then, and when you did, what you were doing was to protect him.” Because she hadn’t wanted to hurt the man she loved. She had done the same with Kaegan, trying her best not to destroy his heart when she had to leave. It had seemed better for him to believe she had died peacefully than for him to realise what she was, or to lose her in the way Magnus had eventually lost Philippa. She had missed the aftermath of her actions, the same way both Chase and Mikey were missing it now. If they could’ve seen her…
Jo made a sound of protest, unsure if Roxxi would hear it over her doubts and the cries that wracked her. Her hand flattened over Roxxi’s collarbone in emphasis, her brows drawing together. ”I don’t think you want him to walk away, even if you think it would be safer for him. Alone isn’t better, Roxxi, it just means that you won’t be there if something does happen. Dented heart or not, he needs you, just as you need him.” The secrets that were left might have eventually scorched another hole in their relationship, like a cold escaping the hearth to burn through the rug, but their relationship could survive it. ”He might have, but it might not make him love you any less. When you love someone you’re capable of moving past more than you could ever imagine.” And if Roxxi’s family did come, then it would be better for the two of them to stand against them together, rather than broken and apart.
Sometimes no amount of the truth could convince you that your worst fears wouldn’t come true. Those images developed claws and buried them deep into the part of you that hurt the most. Without Ananda and Elizabeth, without knowing that Magnus would be there for Kaegan and her sons, she’d have done more than just leave. Jo felt her own fear crystallise the same way her smile had done as Roxxi’s irises had changed and she took note of all the small signs of the damage that seemed to be rampaging through her friend.
Shifting on her knees, Jo tried to get a better look at her, without letting go of Roxxi. She saw Roxxi try to block out the view before she denied that she had come to harm. ”Are you …” Sure. Her hands stayed on Roxxi’s shoulders, so still, but Roxxi’s were rising from the water, the claws she’d half expected after she’d seen her eyes extending from the tips of her fingers. They disappeared as Roxxi curled her hands into fists, a flinch running through her as she realised that they had pierced Roxxi’s palms. Like fern fronds in the sun, they unfurled again, the wounds that had produced the rivulets of blood that had streaked pink and red down Roxxi’s arms vanishing.
Puffing out a breath, Jo was pulling Roxxi back in. ”I can promise I won’t,” she breathed. As she met Roxxi’s eye, she trailed her hand down her arm to take one of her hands. She knew that Roxxi wouldn’t hurt her. Her chin rose half an inch, her storm grey eyes closing for a moment before they opened again, revealing the darkness eating up her irises, the blood red that filled the sclera. ”There’s no need to explain. What can I do for you? How can I help?” There had to be something she could do to help steady Roxxi, to find some control in a system obviously sent into free fall by her broken heart.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ CHASE LOVED HER, BUT WAS IT ENOUGH TO ALLOW HIM TO FORGET what she’d done? What she’d kept from him for his own good━or, rather, hers? Roxxi knew she loved him more than anything, but she wasn’t sure if her previous idolization of him affected that. How much did he love her, and was it the same? Chase wasn’t the one doing stupid shit to damage their relationship, after all, so maybe he’d love her a little less for this. And that was okay, Roxxi figured… so long as he didn’t give up on her altogether. That she wouldn’t survive.
Roxxi bent into Jo, half collapsing and half cuddling, desperate for the comfort her surrogate big sister offered. She was right, it was always about protecting Chase, and nothing would change that. Not even a breakup, she supposed, because Roxxi wasn’t ready to let go yet. And, Dio, if he ended what they had over this… he’d have worse problems.
But she wasn’t there yet. Roxxi was still in her self-pity phase.
Jo’s hand touched her collarbone, and Roxxi sucked in a breath, finally focusing on her friend’s words, listening. Jo was right (again), as much as Roxxi hated to admit it. She needed him, and she hoped Chase needed her just as bad. She would be there for him when she could stomach it again━if she could.
And like Jo was reading her mind, she comforted Roxxi, claiming Chase wouldn’t love her less for this. She hoped not, even if it would be justified.
“I guess I have to take your advice. Y-you’ve done this before. Twice.” Roxxi tried to aim a sad smile at Jo, but she couldn’t stomach the expression for more than a moment. “Does love do this, too?” She sniffled, “T-tear you apart, make you feel weaker than you could ever i-imagine?” Or had Roxxi just gone soft for him? Maybe it was a bit of both. And despite how vengeful she wanted to be, she didn’t wish this feeling on Chase. It killed Roxxi to think she’d brought this on him.
At least he wouldn’t be clawing himself half to death. Jo’s comfort must’ve been doing something because Roxxi managed to heal the self-inflicted wounds on her hands. Unfortunately, that meant putting on a show for Johanna, which she absolutely did not want to do, mostly because it would need a better explanation than she could give. Roxxi had lost her anchor and was suffering all at once, and she felt like a teenager again, suffering through her first change without a clue on how to put her training into practice.
Except… Jo didn’t need an explanation. She barely looked phased. Roxxi watched her friend’s eyes change, and though she’d mostly heard of vampires through her father’s lessons, she knew exactly what she was looking at. “Oddio,” Roxxi whispered, “S-so… you are old.” She sniffled and half-chuckled, then choked out another sob. She would’ve rolled or slid under the bath water if Jo wasn’t holding her so securely.
“I-I don’t know…” She whimpered, “He was my anchor… since I was little; since I first learned who he was, what he’d done to s-stand up to my uncle.” Roxxi hugged herself, suffocating the need to hold onto Jo━she wasn’t sure if she could retract her claws again. “I don’t know if I can control it anymore.” She sobbed, then stared helplessly up at her friend once more. “B-but I don’t think the bath is w-working anymore. Maybe if I went to bed… can you help?” Roxxi asked, trembling as she began to shift like she’d manage to get out of the tub by herself. “Can you stay?” She practically begged, her clawed fingers curling over the tub’s edge.

She’d never met the man, but from Roxxi’s previous words alone – all those love tinged comments – Jo knew that Chase was a good man, a man whose love ran deep. Perhaps one day he would break Roxxi’s heart, as she had unintentionally broken his now, but it would never be with the sort of malice that would cut as deeply as something had Roxxi’s flesh now. A man like that might retreat in the meantime, the love would draw him back though. It would leave him standing there between the woman he loved and whatever threat lurked from Roxxi’s past – as Kaegan would have done if any part of her past had followed her down that long road.
It had been so easy to picture him trying to stand between her and the threat of whoever might have come for her when it became apparent that she wasn’t aging. There were people out there who would cut her down as easily as her stepmother’s guards would have done, taking Kaegan or their sons too. Protecting them had been all she’d been thinking about when she’d climbed on her horse that last time to return to a place she’d from, retreating along the road with a heavy heart. Perhaps Roxxi would try and do the same for Chase then, but Jo didn’t imagine he would allow her to push him aside.
Jo prayed for them both as she wrapped around Roxxi. A happy ending she hadn’t been blessed with then, love allowed to hold on, to shine light into an entire lifetime. She tried to pour that into her friend as she settled her hand on Roxxi’s shoulder, feeling that delicate arc of bone beneath her palm, feeling it press against her touch as Roxxi sucked in that breath. Pressing lightly, she tried to lend that extra measure of comfort on top of her gentle words. ”I guess that makes me an expert now,” she joked, her lips curling in an echo of Roxxi’s sad smile. ”I know what it’s like to have to leave someone and you never want to do that.” She wouldn’t have wished that pain on anybody. The feeling as though you had torn your heart clear of your chest and left it in their possession. Even a couple of years ago she would’ve said you were never the same again, but finding Magnus had here started to erode all of that certainty.
”Mmhmm,” Jo murmured lightly at Roxxi’s question. She could still feel the ragged outline of the wound that leaving Kaegan had carved through her. ”It can make you feel like you’re dying. It can also give you more strength than you could ever imagine. There has to be a balance to it, and this is the worst of it.” A promise that this was the bottom and everything else would be up from here stuck in Jo’s throat. It got lower, but death wasn’t about to separate Roxxi from the man she loved.
Roxxi’s pain hadn’t just been emotional – not from the looks of the blood smeared around the bath, or what she’d seen on Roxxi’s palms before the wounds had healed. The stigmata of a shifter, carved deep temporarily by heartache. If she’d had claws, she might have found herself doing the same. She had no claws to sprout, no blue or gold flash to her eyes, just …
The reassurance that she wouldn’t freak slipped from her on a breath before she allowed her eyes to change in their far more brutal way. Anticipation of Roxxi pulling away squeezed her heart, left her breathless through Roxxi’s whispered ‘oh God’. A huff of amusement slipped out of Jo as she dipped her head, letting the grey swallow her irises again. ”I don’t look a day over seven hundred years, do I?” she murmured. Old, indeed. Old enough to have lived through centuries after her marriage and her heart had been shattered by what Philippa had done to her. She’d lived afterwards, kept moving even when it felt as though she couldn’t possibly take another step.
Jo drew Roxxi close again as another sob rolled through it, the reprieve only temporary – although they’d both undoubtedly have more questions about it all later. For now it didn’t matter what either of them was, only that Roxxi was being torn apart by what had happened. ”That doesn’t have to change,” Jo murmured. ”You said it, he was your anchor before you even met him. You need to hold onto that and trust that he’ll be by your side again eventually. Focus on how you felt then…” But not here. Roxxi was still far too on edge. ”I’m not going anywhere, honey,” Jo promised.
Rocking back, Jo grabbed for one of the towels on the rack before she returned to the edge of the bath. She fumbled through the water for the plug, pulling it before she reached for Roxxi. ”Slowly, hold onto me, OK? I’m right here, and you won’t hurt me. We’ll get you dry, get you wrapped up and we’ll try and do this together.” Like Elizabeth and Ananda had done for her – she wouldn’t leave while Roxxi needed her, couldn’t go and leave her friend like this. Jo helped ease her to her feet, wrapping the towel around Roxxi as though she were a child, gently rubbing warmth back into her as she pulled her close again. The stagger to the bedroom might have been a little ungainly, but with the covers and her arms wrapped tight around Roxxi, she tried to steady her. She might not have been Roxxi’s anchor, but she could help hold her together until Chase took up his spot again.
