The lights flickered among the trees, modern will-o’-the-wisps luring unwary travellers off the road, into the path of the things that stalked around out there in the dark. Come morning they’d be found like bloodied rag dolls, tossed out there among the trees. Not him. If you’d listened to anybody in town who’d seen that other side of him – the dark side of the moon, hidden so much of the time – he was one of those things. That was bullshit though, every life he’d taken had been for a reason, a good one. Maybe that made him a monster, but not to her.
Grey craned forward slightly in the seat, hands sliding up to the top of the wheel, bracing himself against it to get that first glimpse of the lights that towered over all the others in town. In a place where the old and ornate ruled, some probably saw the slick glass tower as an atrocity, but it was home. His version of the Eye of Sauron, towering over this place, letting them stay above it all while people tried to pull it down. A place to perch, an eerie that’d become a home in the clouds. Not literally tonight, the sky was clear, the stars overhead paling into nothing as the trees thinned and he saw it. Maybe he could’ve counted the floors if he wanted to get precise, but the glow at the top was enough for him.
There was no question about whether or not Destiny would be there waiting for the elevator doors to ping open. That will she, won’t she stay conundrum had been permanently solved on her birthday. A key card pressed into her hand, that plea made. Make this a home with me, stay with me. Even if he walked into the apartment and found the place dark, he knew there’d be a glow somewhere deeper in, his beacon. Either a nose would pop out from under the covers as the protection detail was handed over, or he’d hear that quiet clack of claws as Berlioz came to greet him, and maybe divert him to the kitchen to get his hand to dip into the jar of treats – one little one for doing a good job watching out for Destiny wasn’t much to ask right? Big dark eyes would beg and like he did with his mistress, Grey knew he’d cave at them.
His throat tightened as he settled back, already counting the minutes til that off in his head. By now it should’ve been his son’s big blue eyes stripping away that strict parent streak. A gummy mouth breaking into a smile as he fetched a rusk or whatever it was you gave kids that was good for them – all of that he would’ve learned if he’d had the time.
It was a good thing the phone buzzed in its cradle on the dash, a thin blue light filling the car in flashes as ‘’Milton’ flashed across the screen. Grey tapped at it, putting it on speaker automatically. Even he wasn’t gonna use it while he was driving, not out here. ”I’m almost back,” he said, cutting off the voice he’d spent all afternoon listening to. They’d hired Milton as they’d talked about the Mystic Falls move – suggested by Catia out of the handful they’d interview, rubber stamped by him. The man was capable, a little high strung, as evidenced by the call to make sure he was home, but capable. ”Five minutes and I’ll be walking back into the hotel. Did you need anything else?” There couldn’t possibly have been after an entire afternoon and evening spent running through the last quarters business, planning the strategy for the next. By the end of it he’d found himself wishing laryngitis on the guy just so they could call and end to it.
Anxious laughter trickled into the guy, the tone nasal enough to have his own nose wrinkling. ”Just wanted to make sure. You’re tucked out of the way out there, those country roads get dangerous. You’ve got deer there right?”
Oh yeah. As biddable as the squirrels if you put enough power into it, a convenient way to drive people off the road. Reason enough that a shiver trickled under his shirt like static as he bumped off of the rural road and into the town proper. ”You were worried I’d end up carrying one of them on the hood. You can forget about that. I’m safe and you oughta be getting some sleep. Tomorrow’s gonna be busy…” All those agreements they’d made on the way the business would carry on running were gonna trickle down. The best part was he wasn’t gonna be the one having to pass all those messages out. Milton was his middle man the same way Catia was.
Free of the responsibility of stepping behind the desk to check-in with the night manager when he finally got shot of Milton and parked outside the hotel, Grey headed straight for the elevator. Lights might’ve glittered overhead as he’d stepped out but the hotel was quiet. It was late, later than he’d intended and most of his guests were already where he was heading – to bed.
He hadn’t been wrong about the apartment being dark as the doors glided silently open. Wrong about the gentle click of claws heading his way too. That meant the pair of them were likely cocooned in the bedroom already, his spot curled at Destiny’s back saved for him. Grey kicked his shoes off at the bedroom door, easing it open as quietly as the elevator doors had slid back. A faint light, the soft breathing of sleep that’d come without him for the lumps under the covers. The smile welled up, pushing back the grit of exhaustion. His shirt and pants were tossed in the direction of the ottoman at the foot of the bed.
The apology for being later than he’d expected stoppered in his throat, she’d probably wake as he slipped in anyway, but he wasn’t gonna wake her up if he didn’t have to. Grey rounded the bed, got one knee on the edge, fingers curling into the covers to draw them back. There was a silky tuft of dark hair peeking from the top, just waiting to smother him in the best way in the night. His second knee came down, nudging one of those soft bumps and driving a high-pitched squawking protest out of her … it … them? ”Jesus!” The oath slipped out as the covers dropped back and a squirming little bundle nosed out from under it. ”Destiny… There’s …. hey …” Not a squirrel, he was used to the scamper of them, doubted he’d have found one in the bed anyway. This was smaller, darker, a thousand times more confusing.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ DESTINY WAS NOT TRYING TO MOTHER EVERYTHING that came into her path just because of Petyr. She’d always been like this. She would’ve melted at a box of baby skunks at any point in her life━maybe she wouldn’t have cried because they didn’t have a mom, but… whatever.
The shelter didn’t usually take animals like this (not unless Destiny was working); they were more of a place for pets. Like, normal pets. But animal control was waaay outta Mystic Falls, and the place in Charlotte had (apparently, according to the lady who reported them) never sent anyone out. She’d called and waited a few hours. Nothing. So she called the shelter, and Destiny went out to see them.
Their mom was squished by a car nearby, and the tiny little guys had come out looking for food. She managed to coax them into a cat carrier without getting sprayed, and while the woman had called her an animal whisperer, Destiny had relied entirely on her abilities. So, yeah, maybe she was an animal whisperer, just not how the lady thought.
They were itty-bitty, and had just started to get tufts of fur, but their eyes weren’t open yet. Her plan was to release them into the wild once she was done with them, but not all of them made it. She’d come in every day to feed them (even when she wasn’t supposed to be working), holding the tiny, squirming babies in one hand and a puppy-milk-replacement-filled syringe in the other. There were only four pups to start with, and then three, then just two. She cried every time she lost one of them, and felt useless for not being able to keep them alive. Part of her wondered if it was karma for what she’d done to Tanner, but he’d deserved that. She was trying to do something good here. Maybe they just hadn’t had a chance from the start.
The last two managed to make it past the threshold of opening their eyes, which Destiny guessed made them about three weeks old. She named them Petunia and Flower (‘cause of Bambi), and still hoped that she could release them once they were weaned.
Obviously, she couldn’t let them go even before they got there. They were a little too dependent on her, and Rhi didn’t seem keen on letting the skunks stay at the shelter forever. They weren’t exactly an animal that gave off a welcoming presence. Destiny made an appointment to get them de-scented, and one of the girls who worked at the shelter decided that Petunia would come home with her. Destiny didn’t think twice about taking Flower home.
Well, she did. Mainly she worried about what the boys would think of her, but Grey could definitely be sweet-talked and won in the end, even if she was sorta pushing her luck after just moving in a few months ago. Berlioz, however, would be a bit of a harder sell if he decided he didn’t like Flower from the get-go.
She’d leave those problems for later, though. Destiny decided she’d cook a really nice dinner for Grey and keep Flower in the bedroom, then when he was stuffed and happy, she’d bring out their newest addition. That seemed like a way better plan than calling him in advance━that’d give him too much warning.
Berlioz was way more interested in Flower than the skunk seemed to appreciate, but she began to learn how to play, and Destiny thought it would be really cool if Flower took on the personality of a dog.
When Grey said he’d be home late, Destiny huffed and packed dinner into Tupperware for lunch, deciding she’d just have to stay up and spring it on him when he got home. Unfortunately, she wasn’t great at the “staying up” part, and she was asleep long before he arrived, buried almost all the way under the covers with Berlioz and Flower. The smaller of the two was snuggled into her chest like a stuffed animal, and the dog made his home in the curve of her legs. She laid on her side and faced where Grey would inevitably be, comforted by Flower’s soft, tiny head tucked into the warmth of her neck.
She didn’t really plan on what Grey would think when he got home ‘cause she didn’t really plan on falling asleep.
But she was out cold, and she didn’t wake up when he got home, not even when he started to get into bed━Destiny’s eyes only peeled open when Flower shrieked and Grey seemed to yell back.
Destiny woke with a start, sucking in a breath and sitting up quickly. Flower was stomping on the sheets in a slow circle, her tail up and shaking, almost like a peacock. Des figured she would’ve been spraying if she still could. Berlioz joined the commotion, finding his way out of the blanket from the edge of the bed, staring at his new sister, then up at Grey. Destiny smiled sheepishly━she’d turned his place into a freakin’ zoo.
“Uh, hi, how was your day?” She laughed, reaching out to scoop up the skunk and drag her into Destiny’s lap, where she wiggled restlessly, but was a lot less perturbed. Hopefully. “So, remember when I told you about those skunks I brought back to the shelter?” She asked, knowing she’d mentioned it over dinner a few weeks before. “The ones whose mom died? Wellllll…. they got de-scented. And, um, Flower needed a home. And━just look at how cute she is!” Lifting the skunk with her hands around its belly, Destiny presented their newest roommate up to Grey, hoping Flower would win him over by her adorableness alone. “Look at her little toes! And her face! And her name is Flower, like from Bambi, remember?” Bambi was definitely one of the movies they’d tackled at one point.
She started to worry that he might kick her out for this.

The cold press of a nose or a huff of warm breath against his bare leg at three in the morning had taken some getting used to, but where Destiny went, Berlioz did too. They were a package deal and after those first few unexpected stirrings in the middle night, they’d become his package deal. His hand would slip under the covers, knowing be feel alone where he could find Berlioz’s head most of the time. A greeting offered up with a scritch of his fingers along the dent in the top of Berlioz’s head. They’d both settle in, Berlioz’s head dropping to his paws, or Destiny’’s leg again, his own body curling in against hers, his arm slipping around her to draw her in against him. Lips pressing apologies and affection to that spot at the nape of her neck.
Tonight it was probably too late to make up for any of it much. Exhaustion dragged at him as he padded into his bedroom. If he’d had his way he’d have been rolling into town while it was still light. Dinner on the terrace maybe, a drink on the couch after, Destiny settled against him, stories of days that were so achingly normal now that their demons (barring Leah, and that bitch seemed to have vanished … after) had been exorcised. There was still a hole between them, one that was almost impossible to acknowledge, but both of them had been trying to fill with that normal like somehow it’d start to heal the wounds left by it all.
Grey could already feel it all, the way Destiny would drowsily settle against him as she woke just enough, all three of them resettling for the night. God, he’d wanted it, that feeling like they were the only ones in the world when they were perched up here, a solid eight hours of dreamless sleep. Maybe if he hadn’t been on the brink of it, the sign of something nosing around under the covers wouldn’t have drawn the yelp out of him, or the shriek out of it.
Almost as soon as the sound emerged, he was easing back in, his head dipping to try and get a proper look at the thing as he peeled the covers back again. It wasn’t one of the squirrels he’d grown used to – they’d spent plenty of time nosing around the terrace, tiny paws splayed against the glass of the windows as one of them called them close to put them to work (or just for the nuts that he handed out as payment for a job well done). It was small, fluffy, badger like with their size or anger issues.
Narrowed eyes, the blue muddied with confusion, rose, meeting Destiny’s as she sat up, Berlioz seeming to take that as the cue for his exit from under the covers too. A circus sure as hell hadn’t been on the cards for tonight. Grey huffed out a breath, his lips curling at the sheepish smile that tugged at hers. ”I woulda said busy … but looks like yours was busier.” Without blinking, Destiny scooped the little creature, settling it – well, as much as she seemed to be able to without tiptoeing into its tiny head – in her lap.
He settled down on the edge of the bed, one leg curled under him, a hand trailing out to slip under the covers and over Destiny’s leg. Looking down from the smile that’d started the explanation before Destiny had spoken, he frowned faintly at the little creature. Up close it was definitely cuter than a badger, vaguely familiar, although spending some time at the shelter in the last year might’ve had something to do with that. ”Yeah…” he drawled, his voice stretching out. ”The ones animal control wouldn’t deal with.” The ones that Destiny seemed to have fallen for, like she was Snow White, heading out to the woods, the small and furry flocking to her. Well, four baby skunks at least. He’d murmured his condolences against her hair each time one of them had been lost. There’d been some intention to release them at some point, he just hadn’t realised it was going to be in his apartment.
They would’ve likely ended up back here, even without the de-scenting that was gonna guarantee the penthouse remained habitable in the next couple of weeks. Huffing out a faintly amused breath, he dipped his head to meet the beady little black eyes – not making his way in past them. ”She’s not got one out in the woods, yet?” he asked, already knowing the answer.
Grey’s frown deepened as he extended a finger to gently rub a knuckle over the little striped head. ”Cute…” he echoed, before the laugh trailed out. The toes and the face weren’t exactly melting his heart, but he knew that Destiny’s was already marshmallow for them. ”Of course, it is. She’s not gonna, you know … now that she’s been de-scented?” He swirled his finger in the air, making sure not to startle the skunk – stink the joint up. ”How’s he takin' to her?” The concern for Berlioz and the circus he’d imagined at the first glance at the little creature caught at him. It was home for the three of them after all.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ BUSY. OH NO. DID THAT MEAN HE WAS STRESSED? Well, probably especially after having to stay so late at that meeting. It wasn’t like she knew it would be like that, though! Destiny didn’t mean to spring this on him when he was having a shitty day!
She knew what it was like to sit at work, then do a million errands after, and just be dying to get home all day. It felt like the tasks were never-ending, then there was always traffic or something to stop her until she could finally get to him. Unfortunately, Destiny was adding another roadblock. Maybe a full stop. Maybe he wouldn’t wanna get into bed after seeing Flower, or maybe he’d just, like, stay up all night being uncomfortable or something.
Destiny smiled when he settled on the bed anyway, wanting to reach for him as his hand curled around her leg, but knowing she had to keep both hands free in case Flower got a little upset again. “Right!” She said, far more chipper than she should’ve been after getting roused from sleep like this. Acting happy and getting Grey to fold was a lot more important than her sleep, though.
He kinda seemed to be coming around to it. She saw him smile and look down at Flower, who peered back at him (the noise-making, bed-ruiner) for only a second before trying to crawl out of the confines of Destiny’s legs, seemingly not being immediately captured by Grey. Not like Destiny was.
“Ummmmmm….” She dragged out the word, glancing down at Flower as she crawled her way onto the perch of Destiny’s knee, her tiny claws making little indents in Destiny’s thigh. “Well, y’know, she’s little, and sometimes it’s hard for them to survive in the wilderness after getting babied for so long…” AKA, she’s ours now.
Destiny decided she had to ramp up the persuasiveness. Flower was held up like Simba on Pride Rock, presented to Grey in the hopes that he could finally see how adorable she was. He laughed, at least, right? That was something. “Nooo!” Destiny shrugged off the idea with plenty of enthusiasm, hoping she could will away all of Grey’s worries. “No, she won’t spray. That’s part of the reason they can’t be re-introduced in the wild. Well, I mean, I got them de-scented after I decided I couldn’t go back. But… they just wouldn’t have made it. But now she can. Her and her sister, Petunia━one of the other volunteers took her sister.” She added the last part quickly just in case he thought she was about to say they had two new pets.
At least he was discussing it. He hadn’t said whether or not Flower could stay (actually, if all of them could) but he also hadn’t stomped out and refused to talk to her. That was hopeful enough for Destiny. “Good! Good. He was kinda weird about her at first, but they had a few hours to bond, and I think they’re gonna be buddies. Plus, if she hangs out with Berlioz a lot, she might grow up acting like a dog. Which would be good, ‘cause she’ll have a better personality.” And be easier to care for than a straight-up wild animal.
Flower started to wriggle around uncomfortably, and Destiny let her down between them. The baby skunk thankfully started waddling over to Grey, making little squawking noises that were undoubtedly less angry than before. She bumped her tiny nose on his knee, likely just checking him out, and then started trying to get her stubby body over the hill of his leg.
“Awww,” Destiny cooed in a whisper, not wanting to startle her, and shifted her smile from Flower up to Grey. “She likes you.” She added, though it wasn’t totally For-Sure yet.
“I was gonna… I had a whole thing planned. I wasn’t supposed to just dump it on you like this. I made dinner━it’s in the fridge━and I had everything set up, but then you had to stay late. And I was like, ‘okay, I’ll just wait up for him,’ but then I fell asleep. I’m sorry. I know it’s your place and I shouldn’t━I should’ve asked first━but I kinda thought I could win you over through dinner. Do you hate me for it? Do you hate her?” Somehow, that might be worse (because she knew Grey would never actually hate her).

His and Destiny’s affinity for animals had overlapped somewhat after he’d told her about their ability to connect to them, but there’d still been a huge section of their Venn diagram for that ability that he could only admire. She wanted to help the things they lived alongside of, spending time at the shelter to do just that. With Berlioz as part of the family Grey had found himself softening towards other animals, but he didn’t think it could ever be in Destiny’s way – especially not now that he was looking at the extra furry little bundle that’d taken his spot in their bed before he’d gotten home.
There was probably something exceedingly cute about it that he was just missing. Destiny had dotted updates about the skunk kits through their breakfast and dinner table talks – there, he even remembered what the babies were meant to be called. It’d seemed a little wild and obviously the owner of the shelter had thought that too, drawing some kind of line in the sand about them staying there long term. Even de-scented they weren’t exactly family pet material – except, apparently, when it came to their family.
Grey hummed out an acknowledgement at Destiny’s chirpy right. His lips curled, his thumb starting to sweep across Destiny’s thigh in slow arcs. The skunk met his eye for just a second before it started to attempt a breakout. This was gonna be interesting.
It was hard to imagine something that small out in the woods on its own. Even in a place where the wildlife was just that and not some shapeshifter looking to have some wild fun on a full moon, there were plenty of things that would probably prey on a vulnerable creature that small. He wasn’t about to ask outright about those when Destiny was obviously already so connected to the skunk. He could hear that bond in the way Destiny drew out her umm – buying time. She looked down at it, leaving him narrowing his eyes out of amusement. ”So she’s not gonna do well out there on her own, even when she’s full grown,” he paraphrased, already knowing what that meant. Oh boy.
Almost going cross-eyed to look at the skunk as it was presented to him – oh he recognised that move, he’d retained enough from Lion King for that – Grey finally rubbed a knuckle over the soft fur. It was hard to imagine something so small, soft and sweet stinking up the entire hotel, but that’s what skunks did. Unless they had a little – did they snip them? Grey looked past those tiny ears as Destiny rapidly cut off that idea. ”So we’re just gonna have the one stomping around in here?” Maybe the other volunteer was trying to convince their other half in the same way. ’Look … cute! Totally non-stinky too!’ Plenty would’ve called him heartless, but having that most vulnerable part of you well shielded and not having one at all were two incredibly different things. He had a heart and it was melded enough with Destiny’s that there was no way he was going to be able to open the back door of the hotel and send Flower out into the woods to live her best skunk life out there. The internal sigh whispered through him like a desultory puff of summer wind. There was going to be two balls of fur trailing him around the place, playing on that one heart string that left him a soft touch when it came to the jar of treats. His gaze slid to Berlioz, looking for some sign of jealousy from the dog and not finding it. ”Better personality?” He huffed out a laugh. ”That’s not helping.” he murmured. ”I guess being just like Berlioz isn’t the worst thing in the world. She’ll give him some company when we’re both at work.” Although there was always the chance that meant that the two of them would return to absolute chaos here. What did skunks spend their days out in the woods doing anyway? Other than gassing the things that tried to make dinner out of them. He looked back at Flower dubiously as the skunk began to squirm free. Shifting his weight on the bed, Grey slid his hand a high higher up Destiny’s leg, levering his elbow up to give the skunk room to squeak its way over. ”Hey,” Grey murmured, his nose wrinkling. He scratched the skunk’s cheek gently, conscious to pull back when she started trying to clamber up him. Cautiously he curled his hand, using it as a little boost for the skunk’s back side. ”Either that or she wants to at least try and spray me right in the face.” The smile was already broadening though. Like was gonna be enough, even if the skunk never bonded with him the way she seemed to have done with Destiny already. ”You were seducing me into letting her stay?” Grey’s grin broadened, the warmth of it turned on Destiny as he looked up at her. ”Sorry I spoiled your plans. If I could’ve been back earlier I would’ve been.” The hold up had been an irritation he would’ve done without if he could. Curling a hand over Flower so he wouldn’t end up tipping her out of his lap and onto the floor, Grey carefully scooted around so he was stretching out on the bed next to Destiny. ”Hey,” he murmured, chiding her lightly.
Curling the hand that wasn’t stroking the skunk around the back of Destiny’s neck to draw her into a kiss that would hopefully put a stop to those doubts. ”You, never,” Grey promised. ”I don’t think I could hate her either, she’s kinda cute and … if it makes you happy, then there’s no question about it. This isn’t just my place anymore. It’s ours and that means you don’t have to ask before making a change.” His lips found hers again, doubling down on the reassurance with a kiss that stretched out until the skunk nosed into his palm, maybe in complaint because the scritching had stopped. He snorted, shooting a look down at the skunk. ”Does this mean there’s gonna be four of us sharing a bed from now on?” If there was, there might be an expansion needed.

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ GREY SEEMED LIKE HE WAS COMING AROUND, AND, REALLY, that was all Destiny could ask for. Consideration. Like, not throwing them out immediately. She smiled sheepishly, and then laughed just the same, “I just meant━” She cut herself off and puffed out another laugh, “━Like, she is technically… you know, a wild animal. But she’s just a baby, so she’s gonna think she’s a dog, too. Plus, if anybody’s gonna figure her out, it’s us.” Destiny winked, pointing to her head to indicate their “abilities.” Flower started her escape, and Destiny kept blabbering nervously, feeling her cheeks get hotter by the second. She probably looked like a tomato. “Exxxxactly!” She bobbed her head in a nod at Grey’s words. It would be good for Berlioz to have a buddy during the day, and she was glad that was one of the first things he thought of.
Flower wobbled right up to her new dad, and Destiny watched with a smile, a bit of anxiety easing out in a deep breath. Grey even talked to her and helped her up, leaving Destiny to beam at them. “Pfff,” She rolled her eyes, though it shifted into another smile, one that matched Grey’s. Yes, she totally had him sold.
“Through dinner, yeah… but I can definitely have sex with you if that’ll help my case.” Destiny giggled, reaching out to rub a thumb over the tuft of hair on top of Flower’s head. “No, no, it’s okay,” She furrowed her brow and shook her head, trying to whisk away any guilt he might’ve felt. It was work, sometimes it ran late, and that was okay. It wasn’t like he disappeared without telling her━he communicated where he was. It was Destiny’s fault that she couldn’t stay up that late.
She quickly spiralled, though, worried that Grey would give her an ultimatum: him or the skunk. Or maybe he’d just throw his hands in the air and say it was a mistake to ask her to move in altogether.
He didn’t, though. Grey shifted closer, and Destiny met him partway, snuggling up against Grey’s side. She kissed him softly, more nerves than focus, especially when he decided that it would never be Destiny he’d kick out. Oh, man, it was gonna come next, wasn’t it?
“Kinda cute.” Destiny repeated in a whisper, smiling softly as he began to explain. He wasn’t getting rid of either of them. “I meaaaan…” She trailed off as she kissed him, then pulled away for a moment to continue, “... We should still probably ask each other. But… thanks for not freaking out. Not fully, anyway.” Destiny cut her giggle off with another kiss━a real one this time━but Flower was the next to interrupt them. She looked down at the little skunk, already demanding Grey’s attention. She was gonna have a little competition then, huh?
Destiny scooted closer, laid down slowly, facing Grey, and slotted herself against him. “I guess? But, I mean, it is a big bed. We just only use up a quarter of it. Maybe we can banish them to their own little corner.” She doubted that was gonna happen, though. Even as she tried to get closer to Grey, Berlioz was lying back down, trying to press right up against the back of Destiny’s legs again. “Or make use of that billion-dollar hunk of metal I bought for Berlioz,” She meant the crate, which had become useless for a while now. Knowing neither of those options would work, she slipped her arm over Grey’s chest and leaned in (careful of Flower), and pressed their lips together again, smiling against his mouth. Their little family was still growing, just not how she’d originally wanted. At least they were still together, and they still loved each other━that was all she could really ask for.
