The rules had always been a comfort blanket of sorts for her in a world that seemed to try and break her at every step. The screams, the voices in her head, couldn’t be controlled, but the rules meant that everything else fell into line at least. Until the werewolf had attacked Mateo. Everything had changed then. She couldn’t hold the rulebook over her eyes anymore, pretending that it would fix everything. There was a lot more grey to the world than she’d ever considered and it was in that space that Frank’s team had worked. Kara was pretty sure that he’d have taken Cassandra on if she’d wanted to do that work. ”That depends on who you’d want to work for. There are people who wouldn’t care about things like papers, it’s your experience, what you can do that matters most to them.” Cassandra’s inexperience in this time might prove more of a problem, but that would surely ease in time, and until then she had people who she could lean on.
Her marriage breaking down had removed the one person she’d leaned on the most for a couple of years. God, she’d felt that loss as though Virgil had cut off a limb and had taken it with him. It had taken months to feel steady again, and that had been with her family around her. Kara’s gaze ticked up to meet her friend’s again, her smile growing a little. ”He didn’t get to before, but this town honestly isn’t big enough for the two of us.” Their fights back home had been bad enough, she didn’t want to have one like that here, with every set of ears in town listening in on it. Virgil had been able to push her buttons from the day they’d met, but any fun they’d once had with it was long gone now. ”Definitely,” Kara promised, reaching across the table to squeeze Cassandra’s arm. Virgil’s arrogance was what she’d always sworn would bring him to his knees, in the end he’d remained standing though, and she was the one who’d crawled away. ”It does.” Chuckling lightly, she gestured towards Cassandra with her glass. ”You can guarantee I’ll give you my opinion on your options.” With Cassandra she wouldn’t have to hold back too much. Her friend would get an honest view on whatever she was considering.
She was sure that Mateo would give her that same dose of honesty when she got back home. She’d have sworn it would drive her crazy, but she missed her family badly. ”Maybe,” Kara said with a chuckle. ”We’ll have to see how long it lasts if it does happen.” When it happened, she corrected in her head. It would likely have been a matter of when about getting an actual apartment here too, but the second she shook on the deal with Alec it had become a matter of now. She felt a little shell shocked as she dropped back into her seat. Kara let out a long breath and nodded. Her grin settled as she reached for her glass. ”He agreed. It feels a little like he might’ve gone easy on the rent too, either way, it looks like I’ve got myself an apartment.” As Cassandra immediately agreed to do what she could with a sort of party she’d never thrown before, Kara chuckled, her brows rising. ”Really? Well, you’re in for a treat. It’s basically an excuse to nose around your friends’ new homes, and to have a few drinks. Maybe I can get the Grill to cater for it, lord knows I’ve never been much of a cook.” That had always been Virgil’s speciality. Since she’d moved to town it had been an endless trek from restaurant to restaurant, her excuse that she didn’t have a kitchen at the motel rapidly growing thin.
