It had been a while since Cassandra had headed to Mystic Falls with Penny. Finding Sebastian had been a little surreal but he was settled in the town and Cassandra knew that she wasn’t going anywhere without the two people she loved. Her home was wherever they are and she wasn’t afraid to admit that. Cassandra knew that she and Penny were meant to have a mission, they were meant to be tracking down the keys so they could then unlock the dark object she had been entrusted with before she died and hand it over to the warlock who had brought her back but the truth was that she had no intention of handing it over. Ever since he brought her back Cassandra had had a bad feeling about the man and she knew that she couldn’t let him get what he wanted. He was evil and that was something that she couldn’t ignore. She had been given the object for a reason and even though she was grateful to him for bringing her back, the truth was that she just couldn’t hand it over to someone who was exactly the kind of person that she had been warned against. Cassandra had always known to trust her instincts and that hadn’t changed. She had been stuck on the Other Side for a long time but now she was finding her feet and she knew that she didn’t want to end up being separated from Penny or Sebastian again. Sooner or later Cassandra knew that she was going to figure out what she wanted to do with her life, Sebastian was a student at the Salvatore College and Penny had her own life to live as well so Cassandra knew that she needed to find her own path. Things had changed so much since she had died so she really wasn’t sure what she was going to end up doing with her life but she knew that she had to find something. They were all already trying to build a life in Mystic Falls and Cassandra knew that she would need something to do with her time. She had managed to get to know a few people around town and having more connections definitely helped but she still hoped that in time everything else would start to fall into place as well. That day she had agreed to meet up with one of her friends and she made her way to the Grill to meet them. Finding an empty table, she ordered them each a drink to get them started and took a sip of her drink as she waited for her friend to show up. ANGE

Frank was coming. Probably not in the next week, but soon. Kara tucked the phone back into her pocket, breathing a sigh of relief as she shut the car door. It’d felt like a constant stream of promises since he’d sent her the file on Mystic Falls. I’ll follow you soon as I can. I’ll send someone to back you up. I’ve hit a little road block, won’t be long, I promise.’ After a while she’d stopped believing it, wondering how long she’d have to stay before Frank just pulled the pin. It wasn’t like she was seeing much success in tracking down the things responsible for the scores of deaths and missing people in town.
Or in figuring out whether or not Virgil was still here. She checked store windows and car mirrors as she walked down the street to the Grill, not noticing any sort of trail. Hiding out for two nights at the Grey Haven after she’d run into him had felt like cowardice, although it would’ve been more if she could’ve afforded their extortionate rates (there was no way on earth Frank would let her count that place as a business expense). After that she’d gone back to the motel, questioning the clerk with the hope that he wouldn’t admit to letting some guy sniff around the place in search for her. He swore he’d seen nothing, and like she did with Frank now, she believed him. Maybe it’d bite her in the ass both ways, but it was a risk she’d take for a little peace of mind.
She could go back to worrying about running into him everywhere she went, or what little life she’d built here would disappear. That meant accepting Cassandra’s invite to meet up, walking into the Grill with a smile on her face. The hostess looked her way but Kara was already waving her off. That was one of the blessings and the curses of a life constantly on the road. You spent every meal in a place like this, always telling yourself that you weren’t gonna stay put long enough to need an apartment. In end it got to the point where if you saw another burger or stack of pancakes you thought you’d scream. Then a little something new would come along – like some dark, quiet, broody stranger at bar – and you’d regain your taste for it just enough.
Kara picked her way among the tables, a glimpse of Cassandra through the crowd of diners left her adjusting her aim. She dropped into a chair opposite, her smile turning faintly sheepish. ”Hey. Hope I didn’t keep you waiting long. I got a call just as I pulled in. Work.” Humming wryly, she pushed her hair back from her face. Not the worst aspect of work at least. Those usually came out in the woods, or in a morgue here, sights bad enough to sour her stomach, leaving her drinking to drown things out in a different way. Reaching for her drink on the table, Kara huffed out a breath. ”You’re a star. How’ve you been?” Another curse in her job. You didn’t stay in contact with those brief connections you met for the most part, with each case closed she’d been on the road again. Sometimes glad to leave the nightmares in the rear-view mirror, other times wishing there was some sort of a tether beyond just Frank and his team.

Cassandra had felt a little apprehensive when she first arrived in Mystic Falls, she and Penny had headed there because that was where the locator spell Cassandra had cast on Sebastian had led them but if she was honest she really hadn’t known what she would find when she got there. Penny had made a deal with the warlock who brought her back that they would hand over the dark item to him and Cassandra was doing her best to stall that for as long as possible while she came up with a plan. After she reunited with Sebastian and learned that he still loved her as she still loved him, she had talked to Penny and they had decided to stay in Mystic Falls. Truth be told it was a nice town and Sebastian was already settled there so it had definitely made sense. Cassandra knew that she still had a lot to learn about the new world she had been brought back into but she was doing her best to get to grips with it. There were certain things that came easier to her now than they had done at first and she had managed to make a few friends of her own during her time there. Cassandra knew that she still had a long way to go, she would have to find a job sooner or later since she knew that she didn’t want to keep having to rely on her sister for everything but right now she was still trying to find her feet and she knew better than to rush into anything like that before she was ready. That day Cassandra had arranged to meet up with one of her friends and she had ended up arriving early. Cassandra still felt guilty about using the money that Penny had put in the account for her but she knew that sooner or later she would find a way to pay her sister back. Penny had built up a lot of money during the years that Cassandra had been stuck on the Other Side but before she died Cassandra had been used to looking out for Penny rather than the other way around and if she was honest she wasn’t sure if she would ever get used to letting her sister provide for her. Cassandra much preferred to stand on her own two feet and she knew that she would figure something out sooner or later. As it was she had ordered herself a drink and one for Kara as well as she waited for her friend and it wasn’t long before she showed up seemingly feeling a little guilty about being late. “Not long at all. I get it, don’t worry,” Cassandra assured her with a smile. “Is everything okay?” she asked, knowing that she wouldn’t be offended if Kara ended up having to go and help out with whatever the call had been about. Kara had her work to keep her busy, she didn’t just sit around twiddling her thumbs like Cassandra seemed to be doing at the moment so she knew that she couldn’t hold it against her. “I figured you might need one,” she grinned. “I’ve been pretty good, I think I’m starting to get the hang of things around here now so I keep thinking it might be time to start looking for a job,” she shrugged. How she would find someone willing to accept someone who had spent more than a century trapped on the Other Side and was still trying to find their feet she wasn’t sure but she knew that she would figure something out. “How about you, how have you been?”KARA MORETTI

Tom boy was probably the simplest way of putting it. Kara grown up surrounded by boys, had gone into adulthood with Virgil as the cornerstone of her life – a bad move, she knew, looking back at it from the other side of the heartbreak. Women had been in short supply in the department and so she’d ended up one of the guys. Here in Mystic Falls she’d been cut loose from that, her team still out there at a distance, despite Frank’s promises that he was on the way. If she’d carried on alone, as she had been, she’d probably have lost her mind. Cassandra had stepped up into a role she hadn’t known existed though. The friendship that had started to build had given her the room to escape from what swam around and around in her head. She was someone to talk to about things other than the nightmares that swam around in her head and the job – what little she had outside of it anyway. At the start Kara had been happy just to listen, unsure what to bring to the table, but slowly that had changed and she was filled with relief as she hustled through the front door of the Grill.
The scent that filled the place was enough to start reawakening her appetite – it had taken too much of a knock after Virgil’s appearance here in town. That was a good sign at least, some recapturing of the normal (or what passed for it in her life). Kara offered up an apology as she sat down. ”Thanks,” she murmured, genuinely grateful for the understanding. Kara dragged her hair band down from its spot around her wrist and used it to pull her hair back from her face before Cassandra’s question had her nodding. ”Better than okay,” she assured her. ”It wasn’t a call to come in, it was kind of the opposite. My team’s finally making their way to town. They’ve taken their sweet time getting here.” There were all sorts of reasons for that, but none of them had seemed good when she’d been the one left here, trying to hold down a fort that seemed determined to either burn down or fall to the things that were slowly tearing the population of Mystic Falls apart. It felt wrong to make a toast to it. Kara sipped from her glass instead, not gulping down half the glass in one go like she might have done just a few short weeks ago. The pressure was off of her shoulders and it felt better than she’d been expecting. She traced her tongue over her upper lip, then grinned at Cassandra. ”You can say that again.” Drinks, dinner, the discharging of all that tension that had kept her feeling like she’d shatter for far too long. ”That’s something to celebrate. Have you thought about what you might want to do? I’m sure there are plenty of places looking for staff.” Shifting in her seat, she looked past Cassandra towards the bar – including the Grill if that was something she’d want to do.
Her smile turned wry as she looked back at Cassandra. The intention not to bring the whole mood down was still there, buoyed by the good mood that’d come with Frank’s assurance that things were changing. ”Busy,” she admitted. ”Relieved. All depends on the day. The job’s settling finally. Maybe there’s a chance we’ll be wrapping up what’s going on when Frank and the rest of my team gets here.” And then there was a chance she’d be able to head home, for a few weeks at least. The thought left her feeling a little unsteady though. If Virgil wasn’t here, then chances were that he’d gone back home. ”I’m back at the motel. I figured I couldn’t stay at the Grey Haven forever. I’d go broke if I tried. Have you been inside that place?” It was gloss from top to bottom, the rooms almost palatial – at least the one she’d stayed in. The manager she’d dealt with had been understanding – maybe because she’d turned up looking like she was about to have a melt down – giving her a break on the room at least.

It was a locator spell that had drawn Cassandra to Mystic Falls in the first place and it had turned out to be one of the best decisions she had ever made. She had reunited with Sebastian and even though there was still the fact that the warlock who had brought her back wanted the dark object she had hidden away hanging over her head, for now at least she was able to focus on the people in her life instead. Sooner or later she knew that she would have to tell Penny that she wasn’t going to be able to honour that deal but right now that was a problem for another day. The warlock gave Cassandra a bad feeling, he was able to say all of the right things but she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was bad news and he definitely wasn’t someone that she would hand the object over to. She wasn’t sure how Penny would take it when she eventually told her but Cassandra knew that she would cross that bridge when she got to it. For now she wanted to enjoy spending some time with a friend and she felt a smile touch her lips as Kara joined her. “That’s great news! I bet you’ve missed them,” she admitted. It had just been Kara for a long time and Cassandra couldn’t imagine how difficult that must have been for her. “When do they get here?”Taking a sip of her drink, her smile widened when Kara confirmed that she needed a drink. As her friend asked if she’d thought about what she might want to do, Cassandra’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I’ve been trying. Penny suggested I take some classes at the Salvatore School since that’s where Sebastian is but I feel bad not paying my way. I used to work in the community as a healer but I’ll have to find something different now,” she shrugged. Before she died Cassandra had always done her best to provide for the two of them since she was the older sister and she had no idea how to do things any differently. Penny had been on her own for a long time and now she did much more than steal from those around them to earn money for them but even so Cassandra knew that she didn’t want to be a burden on her sister. “I want to help people somehow but at the same time I want something that will leave me with enough free time to be able to spend some of it with the people I love,” she added, not even sure if such a job existed in this age. “That’s great news, I bet that must be a relief,” she admitted as Kara said that there was a chance they might be able to wrap things up when the rest of the team arrived. “Do you know what you’re going to do after that? Are you going to stick around here or move on?” she asked. Truth be told she hoped that Kara would decide to stick around but it was a decision that only the other woman could make. Kara didn’t have family tying her to Mystic Falls the way that Cassandra did, it had actually been her decision to stay after she found Sebastian and fortunately Penny had gone along with it. Kara was on her own here at the moment though and deep down Cassandra knew that she wouldn’t blame her friend if she decided that a change of scenery was in order. “No I haven’t. What’s it like?” she asked, unable to deny that she was curious. KARA MORETTI

Missed them wasn’t the exact way she would’ve put it, but it was close enough to have Kara letting out a sigh and nodding. She tucked a lock of hair that was too short to go back into the ponytail behind her ear, smiling wryly. Over the years she’d become friendly with Frank and the others on her team, but the only one who’d been deep enough not to just be called a coworker most of the time was Ariel. She’d been there before she’d even signed on with Fish and Wildlife. Ariel had seen her as a bratty teenager, had been dragged into all sorts of trouble with her. She’d seen how she’d crumbled when Virgil had decided that his marriage vows were just suggestions that he could ignore. If there was one person on the team she could spill her guts to about Virgil having shown up here since she’d arrived in Mystic Falls, it definitely would’ve been her. Hopefully she was riding shotgun with Frank this time and while he and the others started to deal with their furry little problems here, Ariel could help her start to deal with her personal ones.
”Some of them,” Kara said with a wry grin. ”It’s gonna be a thousand times easier getting things done with the sheriff’s department. Frank can sweet talk just about anybody.” He was the opposite of her in that way. Where she went straight for the jugular of most situations she was in – a bad habit that’d continued for far too long after Virgil had pushed her to be that way – Frank cajoled, he charmed. If they were lucky he’d have Forbes eating out of the palm of his hand in just a few days flat. The corner of Kara’s mouth tipped up in a wry smile. ”That’s the part I don’t know yet. Soon, they said, which is better than the last update I got – which was we’ll be there sometime.” If they weren’t waylaid by another case on the way it was likely to just be a week or two. Thank God. The drink that Cassandra had ordered her started to go down easy, the sweetness of it washing away those last traces of bitterness. With both of them having a reason to celebrate, it likely wouldn’t be the only drink of the night. Kara’s brows rose as she set it down. She’d heard mentions of the Salvatore School around town – it was the sort of place that might’ve been good for her when she’d been a teenager just finding out what she was. ”Maybe kill two birds with one stone. Take some classes when you can, but most schools need a nurse of some sort, right? Even if half the kids there can take care of themselves.” AKA could heal most things all by themselves. Kids like that probably didn’t go to the nurse for runny noses or sprained ankles. Kara lifted her chin towards the bar across the room before she picked up her drink again. ”How about somewhere like here or the Grill? You get to make sure people are eating well, and it puts a few bucks in your pocket.” It wasn’t exactly helping people, but most jobs that really let you do that weren’t exactly the 9-5 sort – her own included. Tapping her fingers against the glass thoughtfully, Kara nodded. It wasn’t often that she admitted how much the job got to her. She’d signed on for it, knowing that it was never going to be just sitting around in a patrol car. Then she’d wanted to feel like she was preventing anybody from feeling the way she had the day Roberto had been torn up by that werewolf, now she just felt like she needed five minutes away from it. Kara glanced back at her friend, scraping her teeth over her lip before she shook her head. ”I doubt we’ll stick around here for long, not unless this case is bigger than I ever expected. There’s always another somewhere else.” For the first time in a long time she was on the fence about running to it.
”At the very least I might take some time out, go and visit my family.” That was something she hadn’t done in far too long, worried about running into Virgil. She guessed she wouldn’t have to worry about that if he was still here. Who knew if he was – he definitely hadn’t been sniffing around the motel anymore when she’d gone back. Letting out a chuckle, Kara shook her head. ”Expensive. It’s worth it if you want a shower big enough for half a dozen people and the softest robes you’ll ever have seen. I’m gonna be paying for it for the next year, but it was worth it. Maybe it’s time I start thinking about renting somewhere, don’t you think?” That meant staying in town for a few months at least, but nothing would stop her going home at some point during that time.

“In that case I think the Sheriff’s Department is in trouble,” Cassandra laughed. She was happy for Kara that her team was going to be joining her at last, though, because despite her friend’s words that she had only missed some of them she knew that the woman would have missed all of them. Even though it had been centuries since they had died, to Cassandra it hadn’t been that long at all so there were people she still missed from her old life before she died. Time had felt different while she was trapped on the Other Side so it had been a long time in reality but to her it hadn’t felt like that long at all. She had still been able to keep an eye on Penny through the veil at times and being around her sister and Sebastian now was something that she wouldn’t give up for anything in the world. “Hopefully soon means soon, this town could use more people like you around.” Kara was so good at what she did and even though there were plenty of others around who were in law enforcement, Cassandra knew that a few more definitely wouldn’t hurt. Cassandra liked to think that she had adjusted to being brought back pretty well but the truth was that she still needed something to do with her time. Penny had her own life and Sebastian had school but right now Cassandra didn’t have anything and it was starting to drive her a little crazy. Penny had teased her about taking some classes at the Salvatore School but the more Cassandra thought about it, the more appealing it sounded. It would give her the chance to see Sebastian more and she wouldn’t have to hide her past from the people there. Both of those things were incredibly tempting and she had been thinking about it quite often lately. “That’s actually not a bad idea,” Cassandra admitted as Kara suggested she take some classes and see if she could work as a nurse or something. “I always used to like helping heal people,” she added, choosing her words carefully. She didn’t have to hide anything from Kara but they were in public so she knew that she didn’t want to go drawing any unwanted attention to herself, not when she had already died and been brought back once. “Maybe although I’d probably make a complete mess of it.” She had been dead for a long time after all and she knew that she wouldn’t want to mess anything up. As Kara said she doubted her team would stick around Mystic Falls for long, Cassandra couldn’t deny that she was disappointed. “Is it wrong of me to say I hope something happens that makes you stay?” she asked. Kara was one of the few friends she had in Mystic Falls and she didn’t want the woman to end up leaving anytime soon but she knew that it wasn’t her decision. Kara had a job she loved and she had to go where she was needed so if that meant she had to leave then Cassandra knew that she would respect that. “That’s a good idea. When was the last time you saw them?” she asked as she took a sip of her drink. Family was important and Cassandra hoped that her friend would get that chance. “I can’t imagine ever living in a place like that,” she admitted. “I know the motel isn’t great so it probably is about time you rent somewhere, it just depends on how long you want to stick around for.” Renting would mean that Kara would be tied in at least for a while but Cassandra wasn’t sure whether that was what her friend wanted or what her job would allow based on what she’d said earlier. Kara’s grin sharpened at Cassandra’s laughter, becoming almost wolfish. The department had always clashed with normal law enforcement, it didn’t matter if it was big city police departments or rural sheriffs, none of them liked someone else coming in to the jurisdiction to clean up their messes. ”It’s about time somebody worried them enough to do something about the problems they have here.” The Sheriff could deny that her town was supernatural central, but it wouldn’t change the fact that there were things here that had a taste for human blood now. People had been killed, more had gone missing, and hopefully Frank and the others would be able to prevent some of that. Kara shivered faintly, but pushed the feeling away, genuine gratitude filling her eyes at Cassandra’s compliment. ”Fingers crossed,” she murmured. ”We could definitely use more people like you too.” Cassandra might have scoffed at the idea, but it had become obvious to her since she’d met the other woman that she had a genuinely good heart.
”I have some pretty good ones sometimes,” Kara teased, gesturing up at her head like it had a lightbulb hanging over it. ”Sounds like you’d make a good nurse then. Maybe there are some classes you could take in that too – if you need to brush up your skills.” It had taken her so long to get used to the idea that there were people out there could live for hundreds of years. None of what she’d found out over the last handful of years should’ve really been a surprise given that she’d been screaming over dead people since she’d been a teenager, but it had and every now and then it still gave her pause. People had a tendency to find something they were good at over that time, or gathered up skills like treasure, hoarding it away for when they needed to start over. Kara scoffed at Cassandra’s denial that she’d manage to work in a restaurant. ”It doesn’t seem that tough. You can carry a couple of plates, right?” She winced faintly as a server hustled past with a seriously overloaded tray. It wasn’t like she’d ever tried it herself. For her it had been high school then straight into the police academy.
She supposed she could have stuck with the Minneapolis PD after her marriage had broken down, but it had felt as though she’d constantly be trying to outrun the reminders of what Virgil had done, or the man himself. At least on the road it had felt like there was no way their paths would cross. She’d been wrong about that, but maybe that was just proof that it would be a thousand times worse back in Minnesota. Kara shook her head, sighing softly. ”Not wrong at all. The town’s grown on me a little, but the job’s never been long term in one place.” Not for her at least. Some agents were stationed in particular national parks or wildlife hotspots, but her department worked entirely differently. A static job would make it easier to see her family – regular holidays would mean they could stick to plans instead of changing them on the fly. ”Not for more than a year,” Kara said, frowning. ”Roberto came to visit for a weekend.” It was about all they’d managed for so long.
Having a home base here instead of a motel room – or suite – would make it far easier for those visits to happen. Her dad would’ve had a stroke over paying out what she had to stay at the Grey Haven. Kara made a low sound in her throat, considering what Cassandra had said. ”Want might not come into it,” she said on a sigh. ”But it does look like this is going to drag out. You think there’s anyone around here renting a place out on a short lease? I can’t always guarantee that I’ll have months to pack up when I get the call.” Usually it was like than 24 hours. Frank’s voice would come down a line to tell her that something had come up and then an email would ping on her phone, full of details that would turn her stomach. It sucked but she’d known that was how the job would work from the start.

“I’m sure they’re doing their best,” Cassandra said gently. There always seemed to be so much going on in the town, that was true, but law enforcement could only do so much considering they had to stick to the law. “I bet they’ll be glad of your help though,” she added. At the end of the day as long as people were safe then it really didn’t matter how that happened or who had to work together in order to figure it out. Right now there always seemed to be people disappearing around town and she had heard about others being found who had been turned into something else. Honestly it was enough to make her a little worried about staying there at first but it was Sebastian’s home and he was building a life for himself there so Cassandra knew that she didn’t want to be the one to tear him away from that. Wherever he was was where she wanted to be but she knew to be careful and she tried to keep the fact that she was a witch to herself. Word had gotten around about that before and it had ended up getting her killed so she knew that she didn’t want to find herself in that same situation again if she could help it. “I don’t know about that,” she laughed as Kara said they could use more people like her too. Cassandra was still trying to find her way in the world so she knew that the last anyone would probably want was more people like that. It was nice not having to hide her past or what she was from Kara. They were both a part of the supernatural world and they had both been through so much. Having someone to talk to other than Sebastian and Penny was something that Cassandra hadn’t expected but if she was honest she wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. “Of course you do,” she teased playfully as Kara said she had some pretty good ideas sometimes. “It’s not my skills that I need to brush up on so much, all of that still feels so natural. What I’m struggling with is catching up on everything that I’ve missed. I hear people talking a lot and I have no idea what they’re talking about most of the time,” Cassandra admitted. Unfortunately that was the curse of being stuck on the Other Side for as long as she had been and she wasn’t sure that it was ever going to change. As Kara spoke again, Cassandra rolled her eyes playfully. “That part wouldn’t be a problem but I wouldn’t like to be in charge of taking people’s orders,” she admitted, knowing that she would much rather do pretty much anything else. “Here’s hoping this will be a first then,” she admitted as Kara said that the job had never been long term in one place before. Mystic Falls was different in a lot of ways and she hoped that this would be one of them. Truth be told she wasn’t sure how Kara managed to deal with having to move around so much, Cassandra had always been the kind of person who much preferred staying in one place and she knew that that was never going to change. “In that case I hope you get to see them all soon, family is important,” Cassandra said gently. That was something she knew all too well, it had been just her and Penny for such a long time after their parents died but then Sebastian had come into their lives and now Cassandra considered him to be a part of their family too. As Kara asked if she knew anyone who might want to rent somewhere out on a short lease, Cassandra thought about it for a moment. “Maybe try talking to the guy at the bar?” she said as she nodded in Alec’s direction. “I’m sure I heard him mention having a house to rent not too long ago,” she suggested, knowing that it couldn’t hurt at least. Kara dragged her teeth over her lower lip and shrugged at Cassandra’s suggestion. Maybe the Sheriff was doing everything she could to keep the town safe, but there was too much being swept under the carpet here for Liz Forbes not have known exactly what was going on in her town. You couldn’t be faced with that much weirdness and still believe that everything was absolutely normal. After a moment Kara laughed wearily, her smile turning wry. ”I’m not sure they’d say that, but we’ll see.” So far her attempts had mostly led to her just banging her head against a brick wall. Until Frank agreed to drop the investigation here she’d stay put and keep trying. In the end something had to give – either her or the sheriff’s department. She’d tightened her grip on her glass as the shiver had worked its way through her, but now Kara peeled a finger away to aim it at Cassandra, her blue eyes narrowing. ”I do, and you know me, I don’t bullshit over the things I know.” She’d never been the sort to mince words, especially when it came to the people she cared about.
Over the months she’d spent here, Cassandra had ended up joining that list. They seemed to be similar that way, gathering people around them who weren’t necessarily family, but who they’d fight tooth and nail to protect anyway. Once upon a time Virgil had been one of those people for her, but now she’d walled him off from her life, blocking out the thought of him as often as she could. Concentrating on someone else’s life made that easier. Kara huffed out something that was almost a laugh and sipped at her drink. ”I wasn’t gone the same way you were and I still have trouble with that at times. Everybody feels out of their depth in a new place and you’ve come further than most.” The thought had definitely left her a little queasy when Cassandra had first admitted to her where she’d come from. ”Just listening takes forever, but it helps, I guess, and you know, you can come to me whenever there’s something you don’t get. I can’t promise I’ll always know.” Google was right there for everything she couldn’t figure out. Amusement growing, Kara smirk at Cassandra, her brows rising lightly. ”Worried they’ll be too fussy, or that you’re too old to keep the orders straight in your head?” The teasing reminded her of how things had been with her family, back before the world had gone weird and she’d left them.
She hated making promises she wasn’t sure she could keep, but Kara nodded at Cassandra’s words. Virgil might have shown up here and the town might’ve left her shrieking over more bodies than anywhere she’d been in years, but there was still some part of her that thought it wouldn’t be so bad to settle here. At least she wasn’t the only one screaming in this town. ”They’d definitely say so,” Kara murmured, downing the last of what was in her glass. ”Maybe at Christmas I’ll take a little trip back, recharge my batteries, come back down here feeling refreshed.” Although there was no guarantee she would come back at all then. Having a house in town would mean they could visit her too, but getting around to actually house hunting had always been just beyond her. Cassandra seemed to have connections though. ”The guy with the black hair?” Kara asked, peering around her friend to study him. He looked a little young to own a property, but she couldn’t judge people on how old they looked in a town like this. ”Maybe I should go and ask for fresh drinks … and see if he’ll rent me a place all at the same time.” There was a wry tone to her voice, but she kept her eyes on him, hoping that there’d be some merit to that sort of conversation.

“They’re doing a pretty good job of keeping everyone from panicking so I’d say that’s something,” Cassandra shrugged. It meant lots of cover-ups but when the alternative was the entire population of Mystic Falls learning about the supernatural world, Cassandra knew that it was much better that they remain in the dark. She had seen firsthand what could happen when that knowledge fell into the wrong hands, after all it had cost Cassandra her life in the past. Hunters had decided to kill Sebastian and she had known she couldn’t let that happen so she had sealed him away somewhere safe. Those same hunters had tried to get her to tell them where she had hidden him, having heard rumours from some of the people living in the town that she was a witch, but she had refused to tell them and they had killed her for it. She had been so careful about who she let know she was a witch but back then there had been a number of witches and warlocks living in the town and rumours had circulated about a number of different people. She was one of the unlucky ones and she knew that she had heard the jeers of the townspeople encouraging the hunters to kill her before the sword went through her heart. She knew that she never wanted anything like that to happen again and that meant making sure that the supernatural world remained a secret. “That’s true, you don’t,” she agreed. “If it weren’t for you, Sebastian and Penny I’d be so lost right now.” The three of them kept her grounded even when it seemed like everything else was still so foreign to her and she was grateful to them for that. It was still strange being back even now but Cassandra was doing her best to adjust and she knew that was all that she could do. There always seemed to be so much going on in Mystic Falls but Cassandra had yet to find her place in the town. Sebastian had school and Penny had her job but so far Cassandra didn’t have anything like that to keep her busy and the truth was that she was getting tired of being left to her own devices. She needed something to fill her days and she knew that if there was anywhere that would accept her then it was the Salvatore School so she knew that that was perhaps the way to go. “I definitely felt that way to begin with but Mystic Falls feels like home now,” Cassandra admitted. She still needed to keep the fact that she was a witch a secret from most but there were so many supernaturals in Mystic Falls and so many people working to keep that world a secret that she didn’t have to worry quite so much. “Thanks, I appreciate that,” she said sincerely as Kara said that she could go to her whenever she didn’t understand something. “I’ll try not to bother you with it too much, I’ve found that most of the time if I smile and nod then most people just keep talking.” That was one good thing about this time, at least. “Probably a bit of both.” she laughed. “I’d prefer to find some way to help people rather than serve them.” That brought her back to the Salvatore School and she knew that she might just have to talk to them and see if there was any way that she could help out there. Cassandra really hoped that Kara would be able to stay in Mystic Falls but at the end of the day whether she did or not would also depend on what she wanted to do. Her job could tell her where they needed her to go but there was an element of choice in it as well and it would depend on whether or not she wanted to stay. No matter what the two of them were friends and Cassandra knew that some distance wasn’t going to change that. One good thing about this time was that it was so much easier to stay in touch than it was before she died so she knew that they would still be able to figure something out. “That sounds like a good idea. I’m sure when you’re there you’ll realise just how much you’ve missed them.” Sometimes the idea of seeing people was worse than the actual thing itself and she hoped that it would all work out for Kara. “That’s him,” she nodded as Kara asked if she meant the guy with the black hair. Cassandra was sure she had heard him mentioning having a house he was thinking of renting out but either way she knew that it wouldn’t hurt to ask. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained,” she offered. “It won’t hurt to try.”KARA MORETTI

Kara made a sound low in her throat at Cassandra’s observation. Maybe it was agreement, maybe it was just close enough to it to stop picking over the idea. Keeping people from panicking might have been the only thing that law enforcement was capable of here. They sure as hell didn’t seem to be doing much about the number of people ending up dead and while she was here, screaming over bodies, that was definitely a problem for her. Once upon a time she’d have turned to Virgil for support through it all, but that bridge was well and truly burned. If it hadn’t been for finding people like Cassandra here in Mystic Falls she might already have bolted from the town. Frank could come and deal with it if he still wanted to, but the town felt like it needed more than one team. ”I’m glad you’ve got us all, and glad I’ve got you,” Kara told us honestly. ”It feels like we’re holding each other together.” She wasn’t about to question just how long that would last. Still being on her feet was the only thing that mattered.
Home had been calling for months. Kara had wanted so desperately to just dump the badge and go at times. Her family would understand, welcoming her with open arms the way they always had. It would’ve left her feeling like a coward though, and that had never been her. She had the feeling that Cassandra had never been someone to take the easy way out either. As she told her that Mystic Falls felt like home now, Kara nodded her head. ”I’m not sure about that part yet. It doesn’t feel like the sort of place I’ll be able to settle into long term.” The only blessing had been that there were people here who understood what she was, people who didn’t freak out at the idea that she seemed to be a magnet for dead bodies. Kara let out a dismissive noise, holding up a finger at Cassandra. ”You’re never bothering me. Sounds like you’ve got a method that works though. I imagine most folks don’t even pause to figure out if they’re being understood.” Those that did probably didn’t find it unusual in this town. Kara nodded, her frown melting away. ”It sounds like you’re already narrowing your options down then. Maybe make a list? See what appeals out of what’s left?” In the end Cassandra would find something, she didn’t seem like the sort of person who could sit on their hands for too long.
Admitting that she wanted to take a break for a while should’ve left her feeling like a coward, but instead it felt like a weight had been lifted off of her. Cassandra’s agreement had Kara smiling at her gratefully as she set aside her empty glass. Her friend was full of all sorts of sage wisdom today. ”A few hours with Roberto and I’ll probably be ready to rush back here,” she joked. Her brother was the person she’d probably missed the most, even if the two of them were constantly at loggerheads. Maybe if she did end up renting a place here, Roberto could come and stay for a while. It’d be a full time job keeping him out of the woods, but the taste of home would be good. As Cassandra confirmed who she meant, Kara stood. It was time to just take the step. ”Wish me luck,” she told her. ”Do you want anything else while I’m up there? Something to eat?” With the decision made she certainly had her appetite back. Maybe a burger and some onion rings to help fill the nervous hole that would open in the pit of her stomach if she did suddenly end up agreeing to rent an apartment.

Cassandra had already lived through people finding out that she was a witch once and it had been the reason they had used to kill her when she had refused to give up Sebastian’s location to the hunters who were trying to find him. While it was true that there could be benefits to people knowing about the supernatural world, in her experience they were definitely far outweighed by the cons. Cassandra had only ever used her magic to help the human community around her but the people she’d helped had talked about what she was amongst themselves and the hunters had ended up getting wind of it. She didn’t regret helping the people she had helped over the years but she did wish that the outcome could have been different. As it was she had died and she had spent centuries trapped on the Other Side until she was finally resurrected and given a second chance at life. “I am too,” Cassandra said, a smile forming on her face as Kara said she was glad that they had each other. “I think you’re right. We make a pretty good team,” she added with a grin. It was so good having someone she could talk to like this, Penny had already had her own life when Cassandra was brought back and at that point Sebastian had been trying to rebuild his own life after finally being freed from the box she had hidden him in. Cassandra knew that she could lean on both of them but she didn’t like to bother them too much if she could help it. Getting used to just how much everything had changed wasn’t easy but being in a place like Mystic Falls where there were so many people who were supernatural themselves and understood had made a world of difference. It meant that she could get a job somewhere she wouldn’t have to hide her past or what she was if she decided to go for a job at the Salvatore School and that was something that she had never imagined possible when she was first brought back. Mystic Falls definitely felt like home to her but Kara didn’t seem to feel the same way and Cassandra would be lying if she said that didn’t make her feel a little sad. “That’s a shame. I hope it will change in time,” she admitted. She liked being able to spend time with Kara like this and even though there were ways they would still be able to stay in touch if she moved away, Cassandra knew that it wouldn’t be the same. “They really don’t. They’re normally so focused on what they’re saying that they aren’t much attention to anything else.” That had definitely worked in Cassandra’s favour on more than a few occasions so far, that was for sure. “Thank you though, I appreciate it,” she added with a smile. It was good knowing that she had someone else she could turn to. As Kara suggested she make a list and see what jobs appealed afterwards, Cassandra found herself nodding. “That’s a good idea, I might give that a try,” she agreed. “I keep coming back to the Salvatore School since I could be myself there, I might talk to them and see what positions are available so I can make sure I know all my options.” She knew she needed to find something to do with her time to stop her going crazy, it was just a case of finding something that was the right fit. “Maybe so but at least then you’ll have your answer,” Cassandra laughed. She knew she was lucky that the two people she loved in the world were both in Mystic Falls, Penny was the only family she had left and it had been that way for a long time while Sebastian was the man she loved. Cassandra had always felt fortunate to have them both and it meant that wherever they were was where she wanted to be too. She didn’t know what it was like to have it any other way and she wasn’t sure what she would do if she found herself in Kara’s position but family was important and Cassandra really hoped that her friend would choose to reconnect with hers. “Good luck,” she said automatically when Kara said to wish her luck. “Hmm. A burger and fries would be good, I’m starving,” she admitted as Kara asked if she wanted anything to eat while she was up there. KARA MORETTI

Always being one of the guys hadn’t bothered her when she’d been younger. She’d always been trying to keep up with her brother, preferring the woods and camping to spending mind numbing hours at the mall discussing nails and hair and all the stuff she hadn’t been obsessed with the way they did. It hadn’t bothered her when she’d joined the police department either, again it had been all about keeping up with the guys, proving herself against Virgil. The problem, Kara had realised, came when people had to make a choice between her and Virgil. Maybe their friends – mostly the men they’d worked with – had sympathised with her, but at the end of the day they were always going to stick with Virgil. She’d retreated to her family, letting them gather around her until Frank had offered her a way out of there. At least they hadn’t given her those looks of fake sympathy that had come from the others.
By now she’d told Cassandra the broadest strokes of what had happened to her marriage. Admissions about the isolation, the longing from home and that feeling of dread that had struck when she’d seen Virgil here had spilled out over cocktails on a handful of nights, relief growing in their wake. Kara liked to think she’d offered Cassandra similar support in return. A shoulder to lean on, a little liquor to take the edge off. There was genuine gratitude shining in the smile she offered her friend. ”We do,” she told her, gesturing at her with the glass. ”If you ever feel like working for the government, we could make it official.” Until then they had nights like this to get things off of their chests, to relax, to drink enough that she would go home feeling warmly numb instead of that constant edge of waiting for the voices to start whispering again.
There weren’t that many less deaths at home, but they seemed so much more brutal here. What peace she’d found since she’d arrived had been left shaky after Virgil’s appearance. While she’d have loved to find somewhere the voices and her ex would leave her in peace, she knew there weren’t many spots on earth where it could happen. Cassandra definitely thought of this as a long term place for herself, but she wasn’t sure if she ever would. One corner of Kara’s mouth lifted faintly. ”I hope so,” she agreed, no matter how doubtful she was about it. ”I guess it partly depends on if Virgil decides to come back.” A plea rolled through her head – please don’t let mentioning his name bring him here. She pushed the thought away, grinning at Cassandra for a moment. ”People are self-centred,” she agreed. ”They can’t imagine anything outside of their own ego.” Virgil had been just that way at times. ”Anytime,” she promised. ”That’s sounds like a plan. I wanna hear about the options when you’ve worked them out. We’ll brainstorm them, work out the best.” Over drinks here again. Another excuse to leave the job behind for a night.
It felt like it had been too long since she really cut loose and laughed like Cassandra had her laughing now. Kara shook her head, still grinning at the thought of being driven nuts by her brother. He could drive her insane, but it had been too long since she’d given him the chance to do it. ”True. He might be on his best behaviour if he thinks it’ll keep me at home for a while, though.” And she wouldn’t call him on it. She wanted what was familiar, wanted the love of her family. Kara sucked up her courage though and got up to head to the bar, to see if she could rent a place here instead of spending a fortune on the Grey Haven. ”Same. I’ll be back,” Kara promised. The guy bartered with her, but after a few minutes Kara had turned that ‘maybe’ into an ‘I’ll draw up a contract’. Five minutes after she’d slipped away from the table she was back, offering Cassandra an a shaky grin. ”How are you with house warming celebrations?” she asked, setting fresh drinks down on the table.

“I’m not sure they’d want someone like me working for them, there’s still so much about this time that I don’t know,” Cassandra shrugged. “Besides, I’m sure they would need papers of some kind to prove who I am and I don’t exactly have those,” she added, a small smile touching her lips as she looked over at her friend. She knew that she didn’t have to hide anything from Kara, the woman knew what she was and what she had been through and if she was honest it was good having someone that she could talk to about it. She often tried putting on a brave face for her sister and Sebastian, before she died she was the one who had tried her best to look out for both of them and she wasn’t used to letting anyone look after her. That was why she struggled so much with not being able to pay her own way right now but a job could change all that and that was something that Cassandra knew she really wanted to do. “He shouldn’t get to dictate your life, if you want to stay here then you should be able to,” Cassandra assured her gently. She knew that Kara and her ex had a complicated past but the last thing she wanted was for something like that to end up driving her friend out of town. “Whatever happens we’ll still have each other though,” she added, needing Kara to know that their friendship wasn’t going to change regardless of what Kara decided to do. Cassandra had learned a long time ago that she had to keep the people she cared about close and Kara definitely fell into that category. “They really are. That has its advantages sometimes though,” Cassandra admitted. It had helped her learn a lot about the world by just listening to those around her without having to worry about participating so it definitely wasn’t a bad thing as far as she was concerned. “You will, don’t worry. I’ll need your help choosing the right one,” she nodded. She knew that Sebastian would be happy to help her with that but she trusted Kara and she knew that her friend would give her an unbiased opinion while Sebastian might be a little biased considering he was a student at the Salvatore School. “That might not be such a bad thing, it’d probably make being back there a lot more enjoyable for you,” Cassandra offered. She knew it might mean that her friend would choose to stay there rather than return to Mystic Falls but at the end of the day as long as Kara was happy then that really was all that mattered to her. Watching as Kara made her way over to the bar to talk to Alec, Cassandra couldn’t hear what was being said but a few minutes later her friend was returning and Cassandra instantly got to her feet and pulled her friend into a hug. “He agreed? That’s amazing!” she beamed. “You do remember who you’re talking to, right? I’ve never been to one but I’ll do what I can,” she added, unable to resist the temptation to tease her friend once more. Housewarming parties weren’t a thing before she died and even though she had heard a little about them since coming back she had never been to one but she was definitely eager to learn. KARA MORETTI
