”Shit. I’ll see you later.”
The bell rang over the shop door, the scuff of footsteps on the wooden floor a secondary warning that was loud enough to have him back pedalling towards the rear door. It’d mean having to jog down the alleyway that ran along the back of the row of shops with memories of what had happened not three blocks from there snapping at his heels like a rabid dog, but it avoided walking past Cassie’s boss … if that was him or his brother out there.
Linc caught her face in his hands, grinning wide as he pressed his lips to hers once last time. He let go, fumbled for the door behind him as the shadow fell across the gap in the curtain they’d pulled across the doorway between the shop proper and the store room they had set up back here with all the magical stuff. The door swung open behind him and he stumbled out into the dusk.
On the night Cassie had made the ring that now gleamed on his finger in those last rays of light, he’d had his heart broken here. Then he’d rushed away, feeling as though some vital part of him had been torn out and crushed right there on the asphalt. Now it was whole, well, maybe it still carried scars and dings, but it was as whole as it had been in years. Polished up to shine bright as her smile. ”Bye,” Linc murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. He broke into a jog, glancing back over his shoulder to make sure he was free and clear. Voices carried after him, but the door was swinging shut, leaving him alone to slow to a walk.
Before London he’d probably have pulled his phone if he’d been gone out of the house all day. The tether between him and Magnus, the trust between them, had grown while they’d been staring at dusty old castles and King given plaques. Nobody would’ve believed him if he’d told them that he hadn’t been the one going wild on the trip. They’d have taken one look at him and Magnus and laughed at the idea of the granite faced, seemingly middle aged man breaking a giant ferris wheel or drinking his way across London on a mega pub crawl. That wasn’t what dad types did. That was the purview of young men.
He’d had it boiled out of him in the basement of Wesley’s club, but now Linc felt the better parts of it singing in his body as he strolled towards the club and a night that was gonna be spent slinging drinks to thinks older and far wilder than Magnus. Forget boozing ‘til he could barely stand up (considering how little effect it had now, he didn’t even want to consider how much it’d taken to get both Magnus and Hector in that state). Linc smiled to himself, the expression not budging even as he trotted over the road and slipped through the front door of the club. The bouncer was parked at a table just inside, frowning up at him like some sort of Great Ape trying to figure out what the thing in front of him was. Ignoring him, he strode across the dance floor – still faintly tacky from the night before – to the door at the bar. What he wanted was the time with Cassie he should’ve had, seeing her light up with all the stuff she hadn’t had either, feeling that healed part of him glow as she did.
Maybe she’d be able to get a day off at some point this week, some time away from the shop and Nicky’s beady eye. If Magnus was willing to let the cord stretch that far now, they could head out of Mystic Falls – if they could get an Uber or something. His brows furrowed, that little niggle at not being able to drive the way everybody seemed to be able to here working its way into his gut like a splinter. It was on the list of things for Magnus to teach him, but even once he started to learn he’d feel uneasy about having Lassie in the car until he knew he wasn’t gonna run them into a tree or something.
The smile had definitely dimmed by the time he hit Emerald City. Linc slipped behind the bar, dumping his coat in the back before he re-emerged. Unlike the club upstairs, Emerald City seemed to keep its own hours. Hannya was probably hanging out here with five thousand year old shifters at 5am – not that he wanted to know about that. Now it seemed to be as empty as the club upstairs. When the footsteps drifted down the hallway from the store room, he was a little relieved. The place was spooky when it was too quiet, like it was at the centre of a storm or something. Seeing Lawrence emerge, he froze. They'd been friendly, although never really friends - probably wouldn't be after Lawrence had joined in the 'kick Linc into the river from four hundred sodding feet' club.
What Cassie had told him had set fire to that last bridge though, the flames burning in his gut, rushing into full inferno at the sight of Lawrence scuttling towards him ”You need to step the fuck off, mate," he growled. After what had happened in the alleyway he'd been holding onto those fraying threads of his temper with a sweaty palmed grip, but now they'd slipped. "She did a good thing for people who needed it. Maybe you oughta try and do the same some time, yeah?" With the way Hannya tugged at Lawrence's strings, that was probably an impossibility at this point.

He felt like a middle aged woman, telling himself he needed another vacation even though he had just come back off one. It was refreshing to actually spend some time somewhere that wasn’t Emerald City, with the added perk that he had a daylight ring on his finger. For the first time in a year he felt the sun on his face without searing pain. It was a simple thing he had taken for granted since he turned. He’d never been one of those vampires who needed to duck in and out of the shadows because their parents didn’t give them a ring. It was just a piece of something to soften the blow before they gave him the boot. He could see the regret in his mom’s eyes, but not enough to speak up. Back to the grind though, as he’d heard the humans mutter a thousand times before. Back to Emerald City, back to pouring drinks for old ass vampires who could decapitate him without so much as breaking a sweat but most depressingly back to hiding away from sunlight. It was driving him towards asking Teddy for a new ring, then he could wave that in front of Penny’s smug face, ensuring he kept his fingers away from her mouth. He still couldn’t figure out how she’d managed to slip it off his finger without him noticing. Well, deep down he knew exactly how she’d pulled it off. He was too busy staring into her eyes, drowning in her beauty to realise her tongue was wrapped around his ring. As he stood in the stock room he found his mind wandering off to thoughts of Penny. She was a complete bitch but somehow how a hold over him. His mind could have wandered to Hannya, but he couldn't’ let that happen. If he started thinking about her his body would start craving blood. His mind had been trained to associate her with fresh blood and now he couldn’t stare at her for too long otherwise his throat would start itching. Without a second thought he reached up into the fridge and grabbed a blood bag before grabbing two bottles of gin and a bottle of vodka and leaving the stockroom and heading into the bar. His eyes ticked up as he entered the bar, spotting Linc inside. He gave him a small nod, “Even..” But Linc cut him off before he could finish what he was saying. Immediately he frowned, “Is this about what happened in London? You survived, didn’t you?” It wasn’t London though, it was Cassie. He placed the bottles and blood bag down on the bar, as he sighed. “She shouldn’t be bringing people back from the dead… the ancestors don’t stand for shit like that because it upsets nature's balance.” It felt like he was regurgitating the same speech he gave Cassie. “I’m not saying she didn’t do a good thing, I was just warning her of the consequences.” Couldn’t Linc see that Lawrence was doing a good thing by warning Cassie? With the exception of him and Remzi – it was probably a close run thing between them as to which of them had been turned first – Lawrence had been the youngest vampire on the trip to London. It seemed like that extra century of being a blood sucker had already boiled the humanity in him low though. He’d seen it, heard it in Lawrence’s voice as he’d decided to make sure they were all getting out of that pod immediately. It was a callousness Linc wasn’t sure he was capable of now – certainly hoped he wouldn’t ever be capable of. You had to be heartless to have a go at Cassie the way Lawrence had. Her expression would’ve crumpled, hurt shining in her eyes, reflecting what you’d done back at you so you could feel it deep in the pit of your stomach. He’d felt it in his heart the day he’d gotten his daylight ring from her and everything had fallen apart after that bubble of joy popped.
Linc could feel it now and he wasn’t the one who’d upset her this time. It was the jackass in front of him, clutching three bottles of booze and a … He swallowed hard, dragging his eyes up from the blood bag. He was better than that now, wouldn’t give in to his baser instincts just at the sight of a bag of blood. Magnus had taught him better than that for a second time and for Cassie – and himself – he was holding onto those lessons with the same iron grip that had his short nails digging into his palms now. Maybe that was what happened when your ex cut you off from the source, not that he’d suggest that was what Hannya was to either hers or Lawrence’s face.
He had to squelch the urge to look over his shoulder to see if Hannya was lurking there in a dark corner, drinking this little situation up with that grin on her face, like it was the best thing she’d ever tasted. It would be the same sort of expression he’d seen on her face when she’d been flirting with Magnus, it had left him feeling queasy enough then – Hannya definitely wasn’t mum material.
The frown cut across Lawrence’s face in an instant the minute his warning was out. Was he honestly that fucking confused about the whole thing? ”No, it’s not about London, although that was shitty too. You could’ve given me a second to figure out somethin' better before you just booted me out.” He’d have asked if Lawrence had some sort of brain damage from the dunk he’d taken in the river before that, but as vampires he was pretty sure that was as impossible for them as drowning was.
Remembering the way the water had swallowed him up, Linc squirmed. He’d been expecting water stuff or mermaids or some dark thing that wanted to eat him rushing up towards him in the water, tangling around his ankles to drag him under. It hadn’t happened, he’d been able to kick for the surface, but for that moment it’d been terrifying. His own frown cut deeper now. Lawrence was already opening his gob to try and excuse hurting Cassie the way he had. Linc bared his teeth in something approaching a sneer. ”You honestly think she’d do it without their permission? She’s not stupid. She did it all because they were alright with it.” At least that had been the impression Cassie had given him when she’d told him about it on Halloween. She’d had good reasons for bringing them back, it wasn’t about money or anything like that.
”But you did,” Linc said tightly, gesturing at him. ”You just said she shouldn’t be doing it. You don’t tell people not to do it when the things they’re doing are good. You thought she was wrong, so you came steamin’ in to tell her not to do it again. Have you got any clue that you upset her? Or did you just not give a shit about that bit of it?” Raking his teeth over his lower lip before he forced himself to stop with the nervous gestures, Linc stepped closer, spreading his fingers to press them back into Lawrence’s chest like he was about to shove him on his arse – something he wasn’t sure he could manage with the older vampire, alright, he was pretty sure he couldn’t. ”Upset her again like that and I’ll shut your mouth for you. Permanently.” He looked up into Lawrence’s eyes, hating that he had almost half a foot on him. His expression was flat, his lips pressing into a thin bloodless line as he pressed them together.

Was Lawrence as uptight as Linc when he was first turned? There was always something troubling Linc, whether it be being kicked off the London Eye or Lawrence telling Cassie to be careful with dark magic. It was mean, but sometimes he wondered exactly what Cassie saw in Linc. Maybe there was a whole new side of Linc that Lawerence hadn’t seen. One who wasn’t moping around the bar. It was pretty shitty of them to boot Linc out of the London Eye, but they would have been stuck up there for hours whilst Linc tried to figure something out. The general vote was to jump, but Linc was too scared to make the jump himself so Lawrence and Remzi just helped him out. Two friends helped another friend. “Even Magnus and Hector told us to jump out.” Dad had given him permission, so what was the big deal? Lawrence had his neck broken enough times to realise death wasn’t permanent for vampires. He tried explaining that to Linc too, but Linc wanted to sit in the pod all night until someone could come and rescue him. No doubt Magnus would have climbed up to save his son. It didn’t matter anyway because it wasn’t about London. He was convinced he hadn’t upset Cassie to the point she felt the need to tell Linc what had happened. The only reason he had involved himself was because he cared about Cassie. “I find it hard to believe they’re okay with her bringing multiple people back from the dead… and before you snap at me no I don’t think she’s lying but I think there will be some dodgy terms and conditions applied.” It kind of grated on him that if Cassie was allowed to perform such magic then why wouldn’t they let his parents bring him back from the dead? He knew it was a completely different ball game, but these people had their human lives handed back to them but Phoebe and Lawrence didn’t. He was focused on Linc and the fact the other vampire was getting more riled up with each passing minute. He didn’t want to come across as some condescending ex-warlock whose parents spent years flooding his head with information about magic. There were so many rules when it came to what he could and couldn’t do with his magic and bringing people back from the dead was up there. Possible at the very top. “Of course I care if I’ve upset her but I was only looking out for her. Do you know what will happen if others find out she brought two people back from the dead? She’ll be a walking target and some people won’t ask her nicely. They’ll threaten her.” But hey, at least she’ll have big bad Linc to protect her. It was starting to annoy him that Linc couldn’t see that Cassie could have put herself in danger, too busy playing the protective angry boyfriend role. His eyes ticked down to Linc’s hand for a moment, before returning to Linc’s gaze. “Try it.” It wasn’t often he found himself being the older vampire in a confrontational situation. He’d unintentionally surrounded himself with vampires that had centuries on him. He raised his right hand, harshly pushing Linc’s hand off his chest. “Don’t threaten me for trying to look out for your girlfriend and don’t cry if news gets out that she’s bringing people from the other side and she gets kidnapped.” Was Linc really that stupid that he couldn’t see the risk? ”Exactly,” Linc grumbled. ”Jump, not chuck each other out the door.” The lack of warning had probably been what he’d needed to get past the nerves that were threatening to leave him crouched in a corner of the pod, rocking back and forth in the teeth of a panic attack until someone dragged him out of there – that didn’t mean he was gonna tell Lawrence that though. It’d been a shitty move, Lawrence and Remzi’s mocking just as bad, so he wasn’t gonna let him off the hook for it. For anything actually.
One look at Cassie in the alleyway out back of the club and he’d known she was sweet. Being forced to pick up people at the club every night on Wes’ orders had left him a decent judge of character (or at least he’d thought it did). You learned which ones to steer clear of, which girls were sweet and naïve enough to follow him downstairs afterwards. Those were the ones he’d always felt the worst about, knowing that he was their judge and jury before Wesley and his cronies became their executioners. Cassie was like them in a way that left his stomach twisting sometimes. She was always worried about others, doing everything she could to make them happy, stepping into situations with her pretty blue eyes wide open but not really seeing everything there. When it blew up in her face the devastation became instantly obvious, the echoes of those emotions obvious even when she was retelling what had happened later.
Linc glanced down at Lawrence’s chest, wondering if it would booong like the Tin Man’s if he punched it. There couldn’t have been much of a heart in there if he couldn’t even remember upsetting Cassie by having a go at her. He scowled as he dragged his gaze back up to Lawrence’s face – apparently the ancestors talked through him now. ”And because you don’t believe it can happen, it can’t be possible, right? Lord Knows It All wants me to calm down now.” The laugh crackled out, almost sticking in his throat. Maybe he didn’t know a hundredth as much about all of this as a former warlock, but that former part was important here.
Shifting his weight, Linc lifted his chin towards Lincoln. His eyes were still narrowed, the high horse he was on probably getting precarious now, but he wasn’t going to acknowledge it. ”Did she tell you that her boss was there helpin’ her out that first time? You honestly think he’d let her sign on any sort of dodgy dotted line to do what she did?” From what Cassie had told him, Nicky was the decent one of the Reid brothers, not all sharp tongued and permanently all wound up like the other one.
The possible terms and conditions dropped into the pit of his stomach like a KerPlunk marble, ricocheting off his conscience and his certainty that there’d been nothing fundamentally wrong with what Cassie had done. It was altruism, a blessing for the people she’d bought back, even if he’d been somewhat sus himself about the reaper talking her into it the second time around.
Look at Lawrence trying to pretend like he had a heart now. Linc sneered, snorted in disbelief. He drew his fingers back an inch before he jabbed them back against Lawrence’s chest. ”Then say you’re fuckin’ sorry for it. She must’ve looked upset when you did it – whether you were tryin’ to watch out for her or not.” He’d never been able to see Cassie entirely hide what she was feeling. Drawing in a breath, Linc held it for a moment. Too late, it’d seemed like they were already pressuring her, although he was sure Cassie would’ve said something if the reaper had actually threatened her into helping out. ”They’re not gonna find out, because everybody involved are gonna keep their mouths shut.” He said it with a lot more certainty than he felt down in his stomach where that marble still tumbled. His gaze sizzled at Lawrence’s returned threat, like lightning flickered in the blue of his eyes and the twitching muscles of his jaw. Linc barely moved as Lawrence shoved his hand off of his chest, just curling his own fingers into a fist and leaning back in. If Lawrence had the balls he’d try swinging. ”Don’t get shirty with me for tryin’ to watch out for Cassie,” Linc said through gritted teeth. ”If you’re really wantin’ to help out then do it without bein’ a mouthy git. Tell her nicely, try and pretend like you’re not a giant arsehole. You got me?” It wouldn’t be easy, considering that lately Lawrence seemed to live in that dickish state. He had to learn to keep his mouth shut, not to go tearing at the person who deserved it the absolute least here.

Jumped, thrown, pushed. It was all the same. It wasn’t like Linc was going to get out of that pod by his own accord either, Lawrence had seen the way Linc was eyeing up the water like it was shark infested and he was about to lose an arm. It was rich coming from Lawrence though, rewind a few decades and he’d be thinking the same. He never would have found himself in London in the first place, considering he was convinced (thanks to his parents) that everyone outside of Elk Valley was dangerous. The coven was the only place he was safe. Ironic reared its head though when he and his sister were turned. Lawrence knew it was possible because after he was turned he tried finding a spell to bring himself back to life. To cure his curse, but there was no such thing. Suddenly Cassie was allowed to revive people here, there and everywhere. “It’s dark magic and that shit doesn’t come without consequences.” Maybe there was a piece of vital information he was missing that would have helped him make sense of the situation, but Cassie didn’t exactly explain the full details to him. Who the fuck was Cassie’s boss? “Oh well if her boss was there then it’s all okay.” Now Lawrence was keen to find out which idiot let a young witch perform the spell. He could have gone into a rant about how Cassie’s boss might be a clueless fool, but what was the point? Linc was already foaming at the mouth with anger, so Lawrence didn’t need to add fuel, even if it was a little tempting. Cassie didn’t run away from the conversation crying, she was just a little pissed with Lawrence for lecturing her. Lawrence scoffed, “Okay I’ll say sorry… to Cassie when I see her.” He wasn’t going to reel off an apology to Linc because quite frankly this had nothing to do with him. The news of Cassie’s little party trick had already seeped from that inside circle. All it took was Remzi walking around town telling everyone his brother was back thanks to a blonde witch called Cassie. “Then you’ll need to take your threats and direct them towards Leah and Remzi… they’d throw Cassie under a bus with no hesitation.” They sure as hell wouldn’t listen to Linc either. Lawrence let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head lightly at Linc’s comments. “Whatever. I’ve said my piece but you’re not listening to me. If you don’t believe what I’m saying then go and ask another witch or warlock.” It was tempting to scribble down Phoebe’s contact details for Linc because she’d say the same thing, albeit harsher. He was done wasting his time with Linc though, he moved past the other vampire, resisting the urge to barge into Linc. LINCOLN CROWNE - the end
