Carefully, Kara brushed aside the wind tossed leaves with the toe of her boot. The blood drops might have started to peter out about a hundred metres back, but the occasional one told her she was still on the right trail. She brushed her knuckles under her nose, cursed at the cold press of it against the slightly warmer skin of her hand. Slightly. By now the wiser cops would’ve been back in their patrol car, driving back to the station, leaving the dumbass from Fish and Wildlife to deal with the ‘wildlife’ issue. Assholes. She hadn’t called them on it though, the bloodied clump of fur had made it her job, and honestly, for once they were right. Wasn’t their fault the temperature was in the brass monkey range.
She puffed out her cheeks, her breath steaming the air. Back home this would’ve felt like nothing, but being out in it would’ve meant being in the park, cross-country skiing maybe, or the sort of family snowball fight that left you nursing bruises for days afterwards, your win marked out in the amount of bitching your siblings did. Here it was cutting her to the bone, making even the shitty instant coffee in her motel room sound good.
Kara pulled her phone from her pocket, checking Google maps, even if the GPS signal out here was bad enough to leave the icon that indicated where she was swinging around in an aimless circle. Her truck might’ve been a good mile and a half back, where the officers had found signs of an animal kill – a big cat supposedly (considering they probably couldn’t tell a pet cat from a mountain cat she wasn’t about to believe that) – but the town had to be coming up ahead of her now. The trees were starting to thin out, the land opening up beyond. If this thing was injured and managed to crawl that far then there was a chance someone was going to be waking up to something dead in their backyard.
The sky was already starting to lighten on the horizon, the moon was still up high though, painting the woods with enough silver light for her to catch another of those dark splotches of blood. A smear followed this time, as though the creature had fallen and dragged itself for a moment. She crouched next to it, dipping a finger carefully into that oil slick puddle. Still wet. She was close, probably close enough to need her weapon. Kara unsnapped the holster as she stood, frowning as a light snapped on ahead. Not just close to the animal, but to those houses too.
It might’ve been too cold for it, but she peeled open her coat, flipping her badge fold open on her belt so that what light there was would spill on the badge. Not exactly a shield, hopefully it would be enough if someone took her arrival badly though. Cold fingers curled around the butt of her gun, the other hand pushing the brush aside. More blood here, painting the bark of a tree right on the edge of the woods, another drag line across the grass.
Up ahead, just out of sight around the hulking dark block of a house, a howl finally went up. Kara held her breath, waiting for it to go up again. The little voice in her brain screamed at her to move. It still took a moment though, as though she it was going to take another to snap her into motion. She let out an explosive breath before it came and ran for the corner of the house. The gun was already out, ready to put the animal down if she needed to. A snarl, a grunt, her nerves tightening in response. She darted around the corner of the house, her weapon up and had to pull her hand up as she almost pulled the trigger on the tall man in front of her. ”Shit … sorry. Sir, you need to get back inside. I’m Fish and Wildlife … there’s an injured animal on your property, you need to give me room to deal with it.” It was rare she got to pull the official act without some protest going up. Plenty of people swore to be animal lovers, but when it came to the animal’s actual welfare suddenly anything that might’ve been a kindness to the animal (a brutal one, but still, a kindness in the long run) was against their beliefs.

MONGREL (With KARA MORETTI) With the way the last few weeks had played out, Klaus was itching to just let lose, let go of anything that kept him tied to the human world. He could level this town if he wanted to. He could leave behind such a bloody trail that it would become the thing of legend. He knew in the end that he couldn't. That there was one thing (one person) keeping him grounded enough from going completely off the rails. But that didn't mean he wouldn't dip his toes in the water.
Give himself a taste of what he could be.
He left behind the ruins of his home. It would be a few more weeks before it was completely repaired from the damage that had been done to it and honestly, every time he looked at it he saw his failure. It only pushed him towards that dark cloud in his mind. He should leave it behind, find a temporary home or a new one all together. Maybe his first act of destruction should be to raze it to the ground, leave it in pieces to built from the ground up once more. However, he couldn't. There were memories in those walls, once that could not be replaced. He would have to learn how to take the good with the bad.
But for now...
He left the house behind, shedding his clothes and leaving his humanity behind as he shifted his wolf. Immediately his mind was driven by instinct, the urge to run, to hunt, to sink his teeth into the tender flesh of anything he could tackle. It wasn't long before he was doing just that, leaving behind a whole host of dead and wounded animals. He didn't want to gorge himself on them. He only wanted to destroy life, a twisted attempt to balance himself.
Eventually he realized that his twisted path had brought him back home. He stood on the edges of his property feeling the call of humanity. Sated for now, he tiptoed around the corner to retake his human form. He was slipping on his pants when a woman appeared, gun in hand. There was still enough of the wolf left in him that he nearly growled, nearly pounced. Somehow he was able to hold back and instead act as he was expected.
Well, almost. He was Klaus after all and he was done taking orders on his own property.
He raised an eyebrow as he clipped his belt in place. There probably were numerous injured animals in the area. He hadn't exactly kept track even though he could still taste the blood in his mouth. "This is my home and I do not think I will be taking orders from someone who nearly shot me for simply walking on my property," he answered dryly. He slipped his feet back into his shoes and then looked to her. "I will help you search. I have a nose for these sorts of things after all."

Local law enforcement hated the badge trumping their jurisdiction – especially when dead bodies were involved – but they had to accept it. She wasn’t FBI, wasn’t CIA or DEA, or any of the big agencies, although there were plenty of those sniffing around town now too, she was Fish and Wildlife and shouldn’t have been turning up bodies along with poaching and illegal imports. Shouldn’t had come to seem more like a suggestion than a rule though. Frank had guaranteed that. Their team wasn’t called in until the major stuff happened and by then there was usually blood on the ground – and voices in her head. Perhaps it would’ve been easier if she’d followed one of those to the mansion, although she wouldn’t have had any control over it then, just yanked along by those mental strings. Kara silently cursed, wishing it would’ve been flesh and blood that was found, making it Forbes’ problem instead of hers. They’d written it off though, seeing what they always seemed to in this town – vicious animals with a taste for human flesh (oh Hollywood had really fricking done a number on them all with that) attacking entirely innocent residents. None of them questioned just who had the teeth and was doing the hunting here. She supposed Frank was happy to keep it that way. Keep them out of the way, let the big boys do their job. When they were there.
Having back up as she grew closer to the homes that loomed above the trees would’ve been a help, ridding her of that itch between her shoulder blades that had her constantly wanting to jump at shadows. It intensified with the howl of what she thought was a wolf, leaving her fingers tight on her weapon and her nerves stretched tight as razor wire as she bolted out of the trees and into the yard that surrounded the house. On any other day it might’ve felt like the perfect spot – right out there on the edge of the woods, nature on your grand doorstep. Now it felt like it might be a bloodbath, whatever had crawled out of the woods only growing more savage. Wounded animals were only more likely to bite.
Narrowed blue eyes scanned over the man in front of her, realising in that heartbeat that he was no threat, swinging her aim away from his rangy body before a twitch had it crumpling to the floor. That was a report she didn’t want to write, a rap on her record that might be the straw that broke the camel’s back and sent her out of the job. Kara drew in a deep breath, her scowl deepening as he clipped his belt, looking for all the world like he hadn’t come within millimetres of a bullet in the head. ”How about taking orders from a government agent?” she bit out, grasping her billfold to angle it so there was no way he could miss it. ”This is for your own safety … to avoid you being attacked on your property by something without the self-control to stop at the last moment.” And he didn’t seem to care a bit about any of it.
He continued dressing, the casualness of it still confusing as he looked at her. Kara kept her hand on her weapon, her grip tight enough to have her fingers aching. There were plenty of things in this town big and bad and just human enough to take on anything out there in those woods. Things that had to get dressed after … last night hadn’t been a full moon, she wouldn’t have braved the woods after, so he wasn’t … ”You want to go looking for a possibly rabid animal?” Kara asked before she let out a huff of laughter. ”I don’t know what you think you can do Mr … I don’t believe I got your name …” Not after she’d come close to shooting him. It would come in handy now, to report back to the station, as though the officers would care where she’d gone after they’d headed back to a warm, dry station.

MONGREL (With KARA MORETTI) There was a part of him that knew he could end this conversation before it truly began. In his mind's eye he saw himself ripping into her flesh, the blood warming his insides and soothing the beast that had been scratching at him for weeks. He could wipe her existence off this earth and most would be none the wiser.
But some --- and they unfortunately counted for everything --- some would know.
Klaus pushed back at the urge and told himself that he could live with simply terrorizing the local wildlife instead. Next time he would have to do a much better job of ensuring that everything met their end. He didn't need conversations like this, especially on the heels of what was supposed to be an enjoyable activity. She had all but sucked the fun out of everything with her appearance.
Pity.
"Oh now that there is a badge involved this changes everything," he commented, his tone making it quite clear that it did not. He was so far above the law that humans enjoyed wrapping themselves in. He made his own laws. His own ways of being. He would never bend to anything that humans tried to push on them. They would only be sorry that they tried. "I can assure that I am not concerned for my safety. I know my property far better than anyone. If there is anything here, I can drive it out." Already he was using his superior senses, casting them out and allowing them to bring back any sound, any smell, any sight of something that was not welcome on his land. He could hear all manner of things, from the insects singing in the grass to the slightest shift of wind playing in the trees. Some would be overwhelmed by it all but he had grown accustomed to it. It was simply his way of being in this world.
Klaus took a deep breath, doing his best to keep his annoyance wrapped up in his amusement of this situation. "Mikaelson, Klaus Mikaelson. And what do I call you, Officer? Unless you insist on keeping things so painfully official." He took a step now, no longer worried about having to deal with the pesky irritant of a bullet wound. "This property is vast --- I can show you its dark corners where you may find your prey. You needn't worry, I will stand back and let you take care of it in the end. I am no hero."

The academy taught you to go with your gut, not to hesitate when your instincts hit, they were what was going to keep you alive. She hadn’t needed to be told it, although the instructors still tried to drum it in to every single one of them, pushing them in a half dozen ways until they pushed past that automatic pause that hit whenever the shit hit the fan. By then she’d spent years stumbling over bodies, struggling with handing control of her body to the things that whispered in her head. If she didn’t trust that she would get her hands back on the wheel in time that she wouldn’t have been able to function on the job, let alone manage to sleep at night without chaining herself to her bed to try and avoid the nightmare of getting chewed up in one of those supernatural fans.
Kara’s frown deepened instantly, her mouth pursing up with the sour taste his sarcasm left on her tongue. Not everybody respected the badge, not every asshole who didn’t was the criminal sort of asshole she’d end up slamming a cell door on. God she wished that was a punishable offence though. It’d make her job in these small minded Podunk towns a thousand times easier. ”Maybe someone standing here with a badge telling you that you should be is proof that it might be a wise move,” she sniped back. If he was too thick skulled to believe that a manicured lawn and a few feet of marble was gonna keep him safe, then that was on him.
Still…
The damn badge meant saving people from themselves one future Darwin-award nominee at a time. Letting her billfold fall shut again, Kara curled her fingers into her palm to avoid shoving her hair back, revealing her frustration. ”Drive it out…” she parroted with a snort. Who knew that the furry version of St Patrick had turned up in Mystic Falls to save them all from their bobcat problem. The temptation to sweep her hand back to the woods, encouraging him to demonstrate left her stiffening up. ”I think this is beyond chasing anything off of your property.” Not that she could explain exactly why. If this guy was the sort of jerk she suspected, then he’d just huff and puff at the idea and would still go out there, armed with a weapon and enough arrogance and idiocy to walk right into the sort of mess she was gonna be left to clean up.
She averted her eyes enough from the bare skin he’d been covering up to catch the hitch of his chest as he drew in a deep breath. Exasperated? Yeah buddy, you’re not the only one. ”I didn’t say I was averse to this being a little friendly…” she countered, although her flashing her badge had made it pretty clear that she’d have preferred being able to make this official. AKA she’d hoped that the badge would cut through the puffed-up-alpha-male bullshit it hadn’t actually worked on.
Straightening up, like she’d get close to his height, fingers resting on the leather of her holster, Kara mustered up another thin lipped smile. ”It’s Agent Moretti.” She wasn’t about to butter him up by telling him to call her Kara, especially not when those alarm bells were ringing harder in her head. Why was the name familiar? Had it been in the records she’d thumbed through at the station? ”Now you want to be cooperative?” Disbelief threaded through her voice. ”It was leaving a trail of blood through the woods, something like that would try and go to ground. Under porches, in outbuildings and shrubbery … doesn’t look like you’ve got too many dark places like that…” She was still gesturing at him with her other hand though, encouraging the suddenly obliging Mr Mikaelson to lead the way.

MONGREL (With KARA MORETTI) She had fire. That was cute. He was itching for a little back an forth given the tone of his life as of late. He was trying to be good (and yes, he was aware that he had slipped here and there but overall, he was living the life that would allow him to stick close to his daughter). It was not easy and he was beginning to think that in order to avoid swinging the pendulum from one side to the other in quick succession, he had to indulge himself every now and then. Have a little fun.
Would ruining her night be fun?
He might just find out.
Klaus played the part of the dutiful citizen for now. "Clearly I need to bow to your superior expertise on such matters." His voice was a perfect mixture of sarcasm and acceptance. He could argue that he was going either way if she pushed back. He wanted her to. He wanted to push her towards the edge so that if she lost control, he could later claim innocence if he did the same in return. "And I meant drive it out in the way that would expose it to said expertise. I used to hunt. I still do sometimes. I know how to flush a prey." In a way, he might just be doing that right now. He had spent the night killing and maiming some of Mystic Falls' abundant wildlife but that didn't mean he had to stop just because he was in his human form once more.
There were other kinds of hunting he could indulge in.
"You certainly didn't project a friendly nature either," he pointed out truthfully. "Coming to my home, where clearly I am trying to relax." Otherwise why would he be in a half state of dress. "And demanding that I just step back. It's hardly the beginning of a positive interaction but yet, here we are. Trying to remedy that." He gave her a smile. "Agent." There was a slight nod of his head and then he was moving towards one of the many outbuildings. He would let her inside just anyone. Some of them contained things that would raise questions. He listened for any sound of their foe. "Aren't you the least bit worried about what might have caused that trail of blood that you followed here? Something did that to this poor creature. It's still out there too."

She’d hated that attitude as a rookie cop, when jagoffs would see a pretty blonde (she wasn’t arrogant enough to class herself as anything more than that) coming towards their car on a stop and would instantly think she was a push over, and hated it more now. Assholes on the job took one look and were just the same. Pat her on the head, talk to her as though she was a particular dumb 5 year old and push her away from the case. Kara gritted her teeth, wondering if he’d have reacted the same way if she’d had her weapon aimed at his nose instead of her badge. That would get her a rap on the wrist in the end though. The Sheriff was amenable to her helping for now, but if someone started complaining about her making threats with a weapon she’d be escorted to the town limits before the end of the day. Patience was gonna take some work though.
Her chin dipped at his comment, her tongue clamped between her teeth for all of five seconds. ”Clearly,” she said sweetly. ”Feel free.” Ha. There was no way he was going to scurry back into the house to let her deal with this. He’d be front and centre, probably mansplaining her entire job to her as he tracked down the injured animal.
The furrowed brows hitched rapidly, a sneer tugging at her lips. By now Virgil would’ve been warning her quietly to back down, but she’d been done listening to him the minute she’d pushed open her bedroom door to see her marriage evaporating along with his self-control in their bed. ”So you’re volunteering to be bait for me? I guess that would work, if you’re willing to risk your ass.” That hadn’t been what he’d meant at all though. He was – unsurprisingly – the sort of man who liked to stride out into the woods wearing his superiority like a cloak as he shot at the wildlife. ”I hope you had a license. It’d be foolish to admit to illegal poaching to a federal officer. Don’t you think?” Just as she couldn’t really enforce her badge on his property without a warrant, she couldn’t slap cuffs on his wrists for slaughtering wildlife whenever he felt like it just because she suspected the enormous limits of his asshole-ishness.
”Sir, the Federal government isn’t supposed to be friendly. Did you want me to knock on your door all smiles and pleasantries while this thing was running around your land?” She was abrupt, oh, she knew that so well, but she could’ve reeled off a dozen reasons why. Those reasons were clamped in her mouth as she gritted her teeth and counted to ten in her head. Trying to remedy that. With that smile and the brief nod of his head like he’d toss her title away the very next time he addressed her. He’d made it very clear that this was his place, and not much was happening here without his knowledge – especially if it disturbed his relaxation time.
Brows knotted again, Kara followed Mr Mikaelson as he started towards one of the buildings she’d noticed littered his property. This place probably had a staff of a dozen, all crawling around like well behaved ants, tending to his every need. Huffing out an almost amused breath, Kara stopped sweeping the ground with her gaze and looked sideways at him. ”There are few things that will take on the predators around here. Do you think our mountain cat or coyote had a run in with a bear out there? There’s only a certain number of steps on that ladder and at some point you have to realise there’s nothing bigger and badder than what’s standing on the top rung. Have you seen anything in the woods around your place? Any late night visits from the wildlife?” The shiver that continued to twitch at the base of her spine told her that it wasn’t likely the wildlife they were discussing now that had caused any of this.

MONGREL (With KARA MORETTI) He had a feeling that he would either continue to find this amusing or wind up with a headache --- it was a very slippery slope and admittedly they were both guilty of dancing all over it. He knew that he was not own his best behavior but there was no true way of explaining to her that this animal she was so worried about was him.
That would change the direction of the conversation entirely.
Klaus couldn't help but laugh at her comment (thus keeping the interaction safely on the side of amusement for the moment). "Sure, I can be bait. You'll find that I don't scare easy." Also if something were to come bounding from the woods just now he would no doubt tear its throat out on principle alone. He had established a healthy boundary on his property, hunting on a regular basis to show the local wildlife just who was the alpha. He would like to say it was full proof but there was really no accounting for the brains of animals. Some only ran on pure instinct --- and those would end up dead, no doubt causing the woman at his side to purse her lips in some form of concern.
"Of course I had a license. You think that I would willingly admit to crimes against someone who clearly already has a dislike of me? I may be arrogant but that does not equal stupidity," he put forth and nearly rolled his eyes. He would like to see her try to arrest him. It would not go over well. This whole interaction was surreal to him. With all that was going on in Mystic Falls, he was going to have to spend his time entertaining her? There was part of him that simply wanted to kill her and have this all be over with but he knew that was impulsive. More trouble than it was worth. He was better off just seeing this to its natural end.
"And yes, some kindness would do you well. You will hardly succeed in life if your face is stuck in a permanent frown." He knew damn well it was the wrong thing to say which was exactly why he said it. He continued to stalk over his property, his mouth wound tightly together to avoid letting whatever else that was on his mind to slip out. He stopped in front of one of the buildings and threw the door open.
"It may surprise you learn this but I don't exactly entertain many visitors --- human or of the four legged variety. As to whatever this may be, I am thinking you have it all wrong. I am thinking a wolf."

Nobody in this town seemed to scare easily enough and by now they should’ve realised that wasn’t normal. If she’d been willing to occupy both of her hands with that thing still running around there, she would’ve tunnelled them into her hair and pulled, like the little bite of pain would somehow return sanity to this whole situation. ”I’d worry a little more about you dying easily,” Kara said dryly. A civilian death wouldn’t just leave her with a mountain of paperwork, it could mean being kicked off the job altogether. Frank would try and shield her from any real sort of investigation, but the Sheriff was in charge here and maybe by covering up what was really going on in her town she’d be happy to find herself a little scapegoat.
Kara’s hands came up, something approaching amusement in her snarl of a smile. She hadn’t gone much further than just indulging the chip on her shoulder with this guy. Maybe he was an asshole, but this wasn’t dislike she was throwing his way, more irritation. ”Sometimes it’s hard to tell with people in this town. Arrogance and stupidity seem to go hand in hand with them, especially when you add money into the mix.” A glance at his mansion proved that he’d likely have plenty of that. Maybe he was a member of the Founding Families, the ones that seemed to be treated like Gods around here.
Anything that had been approaching a smile faded away as he stared straight at him. Kara’s expression went flat, even the anger draining away until there was something mask like left behind – cold and hard. ”I’m surprised you didn’t tell me to smile. That’s what guys usually say – oh you’d be so much prettier if you smiled.” It was bullshit. They weren’t beaming, so why the hell should she. This was work, not a reason to engage in friendly conversation. She was getting close to that point of just saying screw it and leaving him to whatever it was she’d tracked here. If he got eaten she wouldn’t be shedding a tear over it.
Frank would’ve been the opposite. He had an affable sort of charm about him that always seemed to have law enforcement eating right out of the palm of her hand, but she knew she had too many sharp edges for that. She grated on people, pissed them off, and yeah, sometimes that worked for her, but as she stalked after the Englishman, Kara knew it likely wouldn’t this time.
”No shit.” The snort rolled out of her before she could hold it back. She wasn’t the only prickly one here. He was sandpaper levels of abrasive – an entitled asshole who either had a real problem with women or just authority in general. ”Have you ever tried being a little friendlier,” Kara snarked, throwing his words back at him. They’d sent a chill running down her spine though, she was already scanning the woods in front of them, her hand creeping back towards the gun at her hip. ”Why would you think that? Everybody else in this town seems to think their problem is big cats. You went straight for a wolf. Have you seen any around here? Have you shot one?” Her eyes cut up to him, studying a face that most would’ve called handsome. He probably wouldn’t admit it if he did, wolves weren’t exactly illegal to shoot in Virginia, but you needed to prove that they had proved a danger to you to get away with it.

MONGREL (With KARA MORETTI) "I don't do that either --- die easily," he commented sarcastically. In fact, it was near impossible for him to do so but she wouldn't know that. Very few did --- unless they understood the supernatural community. She clearly did not, or at least she did not know the true depths of it. Otherwise, she wouldn't be standing here having his conversation with him. He was sorely tempted to actually show her the truth but then it would take the conversation to a place he was not sure he wanted it to go.
Plus it was fun to play obtuse for the time being.
He laughed now, a true guttural laugh because what else was he supposed to do. She had outright insulted him --- arrogant, stupid, and rich? He supposed that was the vibe he was giving off in their current situation. Most people would be grateful that someone was willing to deal with the dangerous wildlife that populated the area. Instead of showing that he was laughing. He couldn't help it. "Do you often come on people's property and insult their very existence? Is that part of the training you received or just your specialty? I feel as if I am well within my rights to speak to your superiors regarding this whole exchange. Lucky for you I am far too amused to actually act on that right. You will find that beyond my ability not to scare or die easily, I am also thick skinned." A lie if he had ever told one. He knew deep down that insults could hold weight with him if they were properly leveled in his direction by just the right person. He was known to act out in pain when such things occurred.
But he wasn't in the mood for violence tonight. Just amusement.
"Whether you smile or not is no matter to me. In fact I encourage you to turn that acid tongue of yours on any male who throws that particular insult at you. I am merely trying to give you career advice. It seems that you are passionate about such things but your desire to actually keep your job is in question --- now I am not too sure you are passionate about that." He shrugged his shoulders and then let her next insult blow off his skin. It was like dodging rocks really --- just when he thought she was done, she would lob another one. "I was friendly until you started ordering me around on my own property. That is a hard pill to swallow for anyone, Officer."
There was a heightened awareness about her. His prediction of what had done the damage clearly meant something to her. "Because I have seen them. I have seen wolves in Mystic Falls. They are here --- they just know how to hide. And no, I did not shoot one. I have a great respect for their kind." After all, at his very core, he was one himself.

I don’t die easily, said every jackass who’d ever ended up in an early grave thanks to his own arrogance. Idiots on motorcycles racing on highways, people who just had to prove that they could take down the mugger holding a gun in their face, the folks in this town who ignored the sheriff’s rules and marched out into the woods anyway. This guy wasn’t exactly going out there for fun, camping in the great and vicious outdoors, but wasn’t gonna offer any more protection. He just had to prove that he had the biggest balls here.
Keeping her mouth shut as a teenager had never been easy, with time perhaps she’d become more aware of her tendency to lose control of it, but it was still a battle to bite down on her opinion. It pissed her off when people assumed she didn’t know her job because she was a woman, it pissed her off more when they laughed at her. Heat rose in her cheeks, her shoulders and neck stiffening as her snarl froze in place. ”Only when they refuse to listen to me,” she forced out between her teeth. It wasn’t like she was doing any of this for fun. ”Do you often believe you know better than those in authority?” Given his attitude so far, he definitely seemed like the sort of guy who could never see himself as being in the wrong.
Over the years it had become obvious that her and Frank’s strengths lay in very different places. She had a tendency to rub people up the wrong way and he was the absolute opposite, getting them to lower their hackles, charming them with that easy grin and the sort of apologies that always sounded sincere. This guy probably would’ve responded to that too, inviting Frank in for coffee before he gave him permission to walk around the whole property, just to make sure he was safe. Frank had never repremanded her for the way she was, and she doubted he would now, but the sheriff would be a different matter.
Kara’s smile dimmed faintly but didn’t vanish. Touching her chest lightly, she shook her head. ”Oh, it’s definitely my speciality. You can try and speak to them, but it wouldn’t get you anywhere anyway. They didn’t employ me for my sparkling personality.” That was something this guy probably understood. Her brows drew together lightly as he called himself thick skinned. He’d told her everything that shouldve made this easier, but as they approached the woods it didn’t feel that way.
The sudden switch from scalding to supporting had Kara’s head reeling. She full on stared at him now, her gaze dropping from the chilly blue eyes to his mouth like she had to lip read him to believe what she was hearing. ”Don’t worry, they get its full effect,” she muttered before she snorted. Her lips curled again, this time with a hint of pride in her expression. ”You don’t have to worry a bit about me keeping my job. My superiors appreciate my particular brand of investigation.” He could question her commitment to the job all he wanted, the truth was she had the intent to stick it out, even if some part of her desperately wanted to go home for a while. Drawing in a deep breath, she tried to deflate the chip on her shoulder a while. ”It’s agent and it shouldn’t be so hard to swallow when it’s all for your own good.”
Should she just have told him to get his ass inside before the shifter that she thought was out there in the woods came to turn him into the next dead body in this town? Kara swallowed hard, her fingers settling lightly on her holster. You didn’t go shouting about these things, but how far did you let someone’s idiocy take them in all of this. ”Wolves with a keen self-preservation instinct, they sound dangerous,” she said hollowly. ”You seem to be the only one in this town who does. Wild animals get a bad rap around here, they’re meant to be dangerous. Where have you seen them? Don’t worry, I’m not out to shoot them either.” She’d seen them dead though – already shifted back into their human form with her brother’s blood still on their fingers – and after they’d drawn blood she wouldn’t argue about them being that way.

MONGREL (With KARA MORETTI) Klaus just shrugged his shoulders to her comeback. He wasn't going to listen. That was not his style. If his own brother couldn't reason with him what chance did a random woman who had wandered onto his property have? In fact, she should count herself lucky that he had already eaten before he found himself in this situation. Otherwise, he might be tempted to take her attitude and turn it inside out on her.
"Yes, yes, I do. I am a product of my environment, love. For years I have done as I wanted and it has served me well. I see no reason to change my methods," Klaus told her. He didn't just ignore authority; he ensured that he was the authority. Although that might have slipped a little since trying his best to accommodate his family he wasn't going to let a stranger push him around. "Fine, I cannot complain to your superiors because they apparently enjoy belligerence. Instead let's get this over with. How ever can I serve you?" There was heavy sarcasm in his voice, showing his intention to just enough to end this moment. He had been on a high following his romp in the woods. She was ruining it with her attempts to dominate him.
He could play along but he was not going to show his belly of course.
"Wolves are just trying to live their lives. They were here long before us. Unfortunately we have invaded their territory and continue to do so. I don't blame them for wanting to fight back." Klaus looked towards the woods where he had run as a wolf himself not that long ago. There were others in there and he highly suspected they were watching this moment with great interest. The fact that she had respect for the animal was probably her only redeeming quality. "I own this land all the way to the river. It is expansive. There are wolves there --- a pack I suspect. They have minded their own business so I leave them be. If someone has made a report stating otherwise, I wouldn't believe Agent. They have what they need on my land --- they are hardly going to wander into town looking for scraps."

That made two of them. Kara let her expression go flat for a moment, the snarl on her lips flattening as she stared at him. Her environment had been warm and loving, her parents shielding them so well from the nastier parts of the world that they’d hit her like a sledge hammer when her life had finally been torn open. Years of screaming over dead bodies should’ve desensitised her to all of this, letting her put on the same professional mask she’d worn whenever she’d put on a uniform. Instead, the worse it had gotten, the more her shields fell away until she was practically snarling at some guy because he’d obviously been raised by wolves – the irony of the phrase wasn’t lost on her in a place like this.
”You’ve heard the saying pride comes before a fall, right?” Kara asked, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. It was men like him she ended up watching scooped up into a body bag. Men who thought they could face off against the things that were twice their size and three times as powerful. ”If I were you, I’d try listening to what’s actually going on in this town.” He’d probably scoff at all of that too, men like him were never whimsical or imaginative enough to realise that there was so much more than their own little kingdom out there.
If Frank had been here he would’ve had this wrapped already. Clapping a hand against the guy’s shoulder as they left, having done exactly what she’d asked to do. Kara’s lips quirked faintly for a moment as he asked for what she’d already told him a half dozen times over. ”Let me check your property,” she repeated, not sure how she could ask more clearly. If by some miracle the trail led off of his grounds, she’d walk away without another word, but she knew she was right. ”If you’d just let me do my job in the first place, we wouldn’t still be arguing over it.” The words were grumbled, frustration bleeding off in them. She wasn’t the only belligerent one here, but he wouldn’t have a boss for her to bitch to about it, the same way he’d still undoubtedly would the moment she left.
Plenty of people in this town refused to believe that wolves were behind the string of killings here. They were just animals, how could they have taken down so many people? Easy. They hadn’t, most didn’t know why though. Kara doubted this guy did either. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes as he started to defend them, silently holding his gaze instead until he mentioned them fighting back. ”So you think everybody who’s supposedly been killed by one in this town died because it was self-defence? How far into their territory do you think the people in this town have gone?” On a full moon, probably far further than most believed. Kara shivered faintly, scowling when she realised how weak it would make her look. She wasn’t an idiot, she knew how dangerous it was and how dangerous it had obviously been last night.
”This isn’t about a report,” Kara said coolly when he seemed to suggest this was just about a complaint. They didn’t call people like her in because someone had seen a wolf in their yard. ”I came here following the trail of an injured animal. If you’re so worried about this pack living on your land, then why don’t you show me where they’re supposedly minding their own business? Or are you all for letting them die naturally too?” The clump of bloodied fur and the blood trail might not have been enough to prove that an animal had died here, but it was signs of some sort of violence and this guy still felt like he was hiding it.
