━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ IT WAS WEIGHING FAR TOO HEAVY. WELL, MAYBE NOT FAR TOO considering what she’d been through. Weighing appropriately heavy━just almost too much for Roxxi to bear, and for too long. Would she lose her job? Was Chase going to get tired of this and leave her? Giorgia didn’t seem to have a clue what it was about, so perhaps it really was Mal. She couldn’t imagine why, but what other possible suspects could there be? And speaking of, she’d have to look into filling out a police report or something. Chase would help decide whether or not it was worth it… if he ever spoke to her again.
Perhaps this time he would. Next time a crumb of her history came out, however? Or even the full thing? How long would he last before he decided she wasn’t worth it? How long would Roxxi last under the weight of all this?
It wasn’t just the video. That was the fucking cherry on top.
She hadn’t been back to her apartment for a few days, finding solace in Chase’s arms most nights, but she had to return for a while. Get clothes, water her nonexistent plants… but, mostly, give him and Mikey some breathing room. Which fucking sucked, but she wasn’t an evil, obsessive bitch. She was already taking too much. Returning to her empty apartment felt fucking horrendous, though, and she somehow missed him already.
Roxxi called Jo with tears in her eyes, though she attempted to keep her voice as level as possible while she practically begged Jo to come over for a drink. Her door was left unlocked as per usual, and Roxxi figured Johanna would know that by now━plus, she forgot to mention it before getting off the phone.
She was halfway through shakily getting out a plate of antipasti for them to pick at when she gave up and went to flop on her bed. Chase’s scent lifted from the shift in the sheets, and Roxxi buried her face in one of the pillows. She sought comfort, but the only thing she felt was more guilt.
Hearing the door open, Roxxi called out, “In here,” and slowly rolled onto her side. She lifted her head, smiling sadly at Jo. “There’s prosciutto, cheese and crackers in the kitchen. I wanted to make sure there was something out, but then my bed called.” Her head dropped again as she frowned at the ceiling. She’d never seen Johanna eat very much, but it would feel strange if Roxxi didn’t try to force-feed everyone who walked in the door. “If you want glasses, there are some in… one of the cupboards. But I’m not opposed to drinking from the bottle.” She huffed out a sigh.
“I’ve been practically living at Chase’s since I found out, but he lives with his brother, so I wanted to clear out for a while.” Tears welled in her eyes and she scoffed, “Did I ever tell you I slept with his brother?” She hadn’t, but it was all drifting out in a string of self-pity now. “Because I slept with his brother. Before we started dating. He wants to tell Chase now, but what will I say? ‘I know you just found out I made a s*x tape with some guy and all your co-workers have seen it, but guess what? I also nailed your brother. Funny, right?’ Dio,” She groaned, lifting her hands to her face. “Not including the other family shit he still doesn’t know about. You know we were trying to have a baby before this?” A pipe dream now. She laughed wetly and sobbed, not sure what she wanted more: a hug or the bottle.
“Fuck,” Roxxi grumbled, “What an annoying, whiny Roxxi Pity Party. Sorry. Tell me about your man and your sweet, old people love story… so I can be reminded that I clearly do not feel empathy.”

Once upon a time they would’ve called it a witch hunt. It wouldn’t have mattered that the woman was the wronged party – usually with a man’s hands guiding it all – only that she had stepped out of the bounds of how women should behave (in their tiny minds). If her step-mother’s people had caught up to her Jo imagined she would’ve faced the same sort of wrath. A girl daring to steal the gift of the Great Khan himself, to pronounce herself a trader – theft, that’s all it was. Theft and lustful behaviour. Because turning down the hand of one of her step-mother’s elderly toadies made her a … no, she was the furthest thing from one and so was Roxxi. Times were supposed to have change, thoughts like that squashed, but they were flourishing on the campus in a way that had turned her stomach.
Ignoring the whoops of the students in the hallway every time she had to venture between her classroom and her office – her hours there suspended for the moment to avoid any further uncomfortable situations – she had tried to block out what had happened. Demands for students to put their phones and laptops away during class had been met with a barrage of complaints, but that was her sacred ground and she got to control it any way she saw fit. Paper and pens, full concentration. Still her inbox had to be cleared every hour. The torrent had slowed down with the official email sent from the Dean’s office, but it wasn’t gone yet. That, Jo imagined, as she passed by Roxxi’s closed office door, was one of the reasons she wasn’t back on campus yet. It would take a woman of incredible strength to walk back after all that had happened, but if there was anybody that had that inner steel, it was Professor Braschi.
Her keys clacked down in the bowl just inside her apartment door. Shoes kicked off, her jacket hung up. Magnus would close up the shop in an hour or two, perhaps he’d find her waiting outside the door, a surprise. A not so altruistic visit considering she wanted to feel his arms around her – a man who would never dream of doing to her what had been done to Roxxi. A man of rules and manners, a good man. The sort Roxxi deserved.
She was halfway towards the kitchen when her phone buzzed in her hand. Maybe Magnus, anticipating as always. The smile that started to tug at the corners of her mouth as she flipped it over her grip and saw Roxxi’s name on the screen. Her apology – honestly, what use would it have been? – started to tumble out before she caught the plea in Roxxi’s voice. ”I’m on my way,” she promised. No question of it. Just as she had when Magnus had come here, looking like his heart had been torn from his chest when Lincoln had gone missing, she went without question.
The knots tightened and released in her stomach as she drove across town, the bottle of wine that would perhaps have been popped open over dinner with Magnus beside her on the passenger seat. Eyes full of the storm clouds of worry rose, looking for the light in Roxxi’s apartment as she stepped out of her car. It was on, but that gave no indication as to the state she was going to find Roxxi in when she pushed open the door.
She never usually bothered knocking, but Jo did this time, just a light rap of her knuckles against the door as she opened it. Roxxi had to have heard it, the summons coming from deeper into the apartment. There was the faint scent of food in the air, but Jo bypassed it, trailing towards Roxxi’s bedroom. Her smile was small, tight, in response to the sadness in Roxxi’s as she paused in her bedroom doorway. Jo leaned against the frame, the bottle dangling from her fingertips. ”Still trying to feed me up, huh?” she asked lightly. ”Thanks, but I’m might be doing that to you now.” Shaking her head lightly to brush off the idea of glasses too, Jo padded into the room, the bottle in hand – thankfully twist caps had become a thing and she didn’t have to fight with a cork.
Jo padded in, setting the bottle down on the nightstand before she kicked off her boots again. She abandoned them at the foot of the bed and slipped onto it next to Roxxi, her hand automatically finding Roxxi’s arm to squeeze lightly. She didn’t have to ask for the details, just slipped into an explanation that already had the tears welling in her eyes. Jo’s widened faintly. Had the video been the brother’s fault? She let out a puff of breath, reaching for the bottle of wine that Roxxi certainly deserved. ”You didn’t, but that’s nothing to be ashamed of. It was before, and I’m guessing it was nothing like what you have with Chase now.” Dio indeed. She couldn’t even imagine having to say the words aloud to Magnus, couldn’t imagine having done half of that, but she was literally from another time.
Shifting, Jo shuffled closer, offering her arms to Roxxi. It didn’t matter what she had happened, how others had reacted, she had done nothing wrong. ”Not all of us. Come here,” she said lightly, brushing Roxxi’s cheeks the way she had done her sons when they were small. ”That sounds serious, and I know that if he wants a family with you, then he can handle hearing it all. He loves you? If he does, that means he can handle whatever has happened.” She didn’t need to ask if Roxxi loved him, that much she could hear in every sob that rolled through her. Jo blew out a dismissive sound, pressing her cheek to the top of Roxxi’s head for a moment. ”After all of that you deserve a Roxxi pity party and as long as you want to have one, I’m right here. If you want a distraction in the form of hearing that I slept with him … I’m happy to give that too. Not … not that sort of slept with … but, on his birthday. It was sweet. I … I feel a little like I’m that sixteen year old again. Did I tell you that it could have been either one of them then?” Both had flirted, but Kaegan was the one who had captured her heart first … Kaegan was the one she had lost, that they had both lost.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ MAYBE IT WAS ONLY A REFLECTION OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP now, but Roxxi couldn’t imagine Giorgia like this. Of her five older sisters, Giorgia had been the one Roxxi used to run to back home—if their dad wasn’t around, of course. Her favourite of the triplets—a fact she bluntly told her father on one occasion and watched as his lips curled up in a wry smile before he chastised her and tried not to laugh.
In any case, she’d run to her sister, upset over something or other, and found comfort with Giorgia. Matilde and Vittoria would’ve laughed and made fun of her, but Giorgia was never so cruel. Roxxi had been the baby of the family at one point (though it wasn’t long), and Giorgia had obviously seen and given the support she needed.
Now, though? There was no chance in hell that either of them would soften to this point.
Roxxi was forever grateful for Jo.
“Of course not,” She sniffled, “It was a one-night stand. I… I knew who he was, but I didn’t think I’d ever see Chase again; we’d only just met for the first time. And when I saw his brother in the kitchen one morning, I had to pretend I didn’t know they were related.” Roxxi choked on the words, but it felt so good to finally tell someone the truth. She’d lie to Mikey for as long as possible, especially if it meant they didn’t have to tell Chase. “His brother wants to come clean, too, but I can’t. Especially not after this. How many times will I hurt him before he gives up?”
She didn’t need to be told twice. Roxxi rolled into Johanna’s arms and sobbed hard, contemplating her life without Chase. She never used to think he’d be in it as more than a far-off, guiding light, but now she couldn’t imagine going a day without talking to him.
“Who would want to start a family with a woman who's slept with half of Mystic Falls?” Roxxi blubbered, sounding far more sad and pathetic than she wanted. She would never, ever cheat on Chase, but it didn’t look good when things like this kept happening, and it would be impossible to keep them separate in his mind—she was almost sure of that. Realistically, it was only two men, but it still felt like a recurring issue.
He said he loved her. He said so, but perhaps that would only make it hurt more. Chase had been betrayed in his life, and she would only wound him further.
But she couldn’t let go. Despite the fervent pessimism, part of Roxxi still had hope that they could get through everything and be a family one day. She’d never loved anybody like she loved him, and she wouldn’t let him go.
Instead of crying any more, Roxxi sniffled and rubbed a few tears on Jo’s shirt, taking a big huff of breath in and out. She relaxed into her friend, her substitute Big-Sis-Slash-Mom, and listened to the distraction—which did its job.
“You what?!” Roxxi practically shrieked, dragging her head back for a moment to stare wide-eyed up at Jo. But, no, she was just teasing her. Puffing dramatically, she flopped her head back into the hidey-hole of Jo’s chest and neck, still grinning at the innocence of Jo’s story and how opposite it was to Roxxi’s.
Except…
She’d had a choice? And still ended up picking the one who’d die early? “Wow,” Roxxi mumbled, “So you were able to sample both because you married the other first? That’s lucky.” As per usual, Roxxi’s mouth got ahead of her brain. “I’m sorry.” She sighed, “That was tactless and inconsiderate. I didn’t mean it that way.” Her arms tightened around Jo for a moment as she readjusted into a better snuggle position━one that was almost the same as before.
“Why haven’t you actually slept with him yet?” Roxxi asked with a frown, then grinned to herself, “Oh, yes, I forgot━normal people like to wait.” She scoffed, “But you two have known each other since you were kids, no? I know you’re different people now, but… you know he isn’t using you. Are you going to marry him next?” She didn’t apologize for that, but she tried not to make it sound as awful as it could’ve been. Roxxi, however, was nearly thirty (ugh) and wasn’t about to start mincing her words for other people. “I can’t believe you’ll have two great loves by… however old you are… and I’ve only had one serious adult relationship━which I fuck up this badly.”
But it spoke to who they were as people. Roxana was not Johanna; they might’ve had the same job, but they were wildly different people. And Roxxi couldn’t say she regretted most of her choices in life━it was just the few catching up with her now that were bothersome.

Cambulac might have been enlightened in many ways – at least until the khan had decided to close its gates and throw out anybody who didn’t have Mongol blood in their veins – but in the fundamental ones it had been too confining for a teenaged girl. The road had shown her a world far wider than the one her step-mother had tried to seal her into. Out there she didn’t have to feel ashamed of having a confidant in a boy, one she had no intentions of marrying. Without brothers and sisters of her own Jo had turned Ananda into that confidant. Not someone to bind her into a marriage, or to try and force her into loving him in a way that she’d realised later she never would, but someone to hear what was bound tightly in her heart.
Jo’s lips curved faintly, out of Roxxi’s view – smiles were not what she needed now – at the memory of how she had rushed to the home the two of them had shared then to tell him of Kaegan and Magnus, the games they had played for her affection, the way her heart had started to warm at the sight of them. It would be months before she would admit the same to Kaegan. No matter how long her marriage had played out, how close she had become with Magnus through that connection with her husband, nobody had taken Ananda’s place that way. Centuries later she’d wished he’d come walking through the door of her apartment so she could tell him of Magnus’ appearance here, of the way that her heart – thought long cold – had started to warm for him. In that way Roxxi had taken his place, worming those details out of her along with a bashful smile in her office. She had been a shoulder to lean on and now she would be the same. A wise head on ancient shoulders.
Roxxi might still have been working her way towards the admission she had whispered to Ananda one cold morning in the stables – ’I think I love him’ – but her feelings towards Chase had grown to the point where she could practically see the whole torn through her now. The fabric of feelings still unspoken torn, peppered, it seemed, with other tiny rips, waiting to open up and devastate her. ”You couldn’t know you were stumbling into a mine field with either one of them,” she reassured Roxxi, her hand coming up to her shoulder. ”If his brother doing it maliciously?” Jo doubted it, Roxxi hadn’t spoken of it like it was blackmail, just his brother wanted to clear the air that had to be choking everybody involved. ”If he loves you he’ll forgive you. He won’t give up on you. You said yourself that you didn’t think you’d see him again.” Only fate had a way of throwing people back into your path, giving you a second chance. Perhaps for Roxxi it would be her third or fourth, maybe her tenth. It felt like a lie on her tongue, because a single lie had broken relationships before, tearing apart marriages, leaving your husband to go to his own grave believing you were already cold in yours thousands of miles away. Jo rested her cheek atop Roxxi’s head as she sobbed against her, her hand sliding to her back to sooth her with slow circles. ”Two other men is not half the town,” Jo reassured her. ”I don’t know anything of him apart from what you’ve told me, but he doesn’t seem the sort of man to condemn you for what happened before you were together. The things we want don’t vanish that way.” They held on, burrowing into your heart until you felt hollowed out with them. She’d felt those tears open up in her own heart the night Philippa had turned her, some never mending.
Magnus’ fingers, so deft on the hand of a sword were now mending some of those rips. A slow, neat repair she barely felt, the same way she didn’t feel Roxxi’s tears sinking in her shirt while she was distracted by Roxxi’s shriek. The heat rose in her face again, mildly compared to the way she’d once been able to blush. ”I made him dinner, by the time we were done it was late and he didn’t want me driving home. He would’ve slept on the couch, but it didn’t feel right to kick him out of his bed.” It had felt right waking up with Magnus’ arm around her though, her head on his chest like Roxxi’s was on hers now.
Jo stroked her hand slowly over the dark tangle of Roxxi’s hair, her lips curling faintly at the memory. Thorns worked their way through those rents in her heart as she brought Kaegan into the conversation, stinging for a moment, but there was nothing she could do to change the past, to ease the regrets she’d had when she’d ridden away from the castle. ”It’s OK,” Jo whispered, frowning faintly before she settled back with Roxxi, her hand patting her back lightly. ”You’re not wrong. If I hadn’t lost Kaegan, if we both hadn’t lost him, I would never have been here … able to sample both, as you put it.” The only lucky thing had been that Philippa had been taken before she’d been able to make Magnus suffer for what had felt like an eternity. A small blessing in the centre of a well of pain. The heat was rushing back as she dipped her head. The pit of her stomach twisting as she smiled wryly. Old people liked to wait. She hadn’t with Kaegan … not until after they’d exchanged vows. Now more often than not it wasn’t that way, being able to express your love physically wasn’t some sign that were a … loose woman. There was no shame in it. ”Since we were teenagers. He never would…” What was between them was nothing like the way Philippa had used him. It was sweet and tender and both of them were caught in the slow current of it. Jo shook her head, her heart still aching at the thought. ”I don’t know if either of us would be ready for that. Actually sleepin with him though … I’m sure it won’t be long. We’re both a little old fashioned.” From another time entirely.
The laugh worked its way through Jo’s words, her elbow bumping Roxxi lightly. ”You’ll have us married by the end of the week at that rate. I don’t know about great love yet, but … I’ve been lucky to have the chance of a second. I never thought I would see Magnus again.” Fate had done some heavy lifting, as it would for Roxxi, whether she believed it in or not. Jo brought her hand up to tip Roxxi’s chin up. ”You have fucked nothing up. Other people are trying to do it for you and … since I’m ready to call Chase your great love, I’m gonna demand pride of place as your Maid of Honour when you head down the aisle towards him. How was he afterwards?” She hated swinging the conversation back around to the noxious elephant in the room, but if she didn’t leap frog Roxxi’s question about how old she was, there were lies she was going to have to start telling.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ “NO,” ROXXI PUFFED, KNOWING MIKEY WAS RIGHT AND HATING EVERY minute of it. “He just wants Chase to know so we aren’t… lying to him anymore. But I’m not lying. I don’t care about Mikey; he was a short fling to prove something to myself. Chase is everything.” And she would lose everything.
Of course she hadn’t thought she’d see him again. She wasn’t supposed to, but he kept showing up, and she only fell deeper in love. She was an idiot to think none of this would bubble up to the surface after what they’d started, but that was just the thing━this wasn’t the secret she thought would come out. It wasn’t supposed to be. It was better than the rest, but it still hurt.
She wanted Jo to be right. Roxxi thought she might be, but she couldn’t tell the difference between wanting to believe her and it actually being true. But Chase loved her, right? He’d have to see how little everyone else meant. He had to understand that he was the only man that truly existed in her eyes, and that that would never change.
She’d rather talk about Jo’s boy troubles. Or, actually, her non-troubles, because Roxxi wished her biggest problem was figuring out when to sleep with a man you’d known your whole life. “Ugh,” She puffed, “You’re strong. I always just sleep with them anyway. Like, ‘I’m here, I’m not going to sleep well in someone else’s bed, we may as well tire ourselves out.’” But, clearly, that was the difference between them. That was why Roxxi was the one crying in Jo’s arms, and not the other way around.
At least she hadn’t offended the last person (who wasn’t her boyfriend) she had left. Jo had a thick skin; Roxxi couldn’t get rid of her that easy, grazie a Dio.
But still, she couldn’t understand Jo’s sexual habits. How had she known this man for so long and yet hadn’t slept with him? Alright, fine, maybe she was married for most of the time, didn’t see him for the rest, and wasn’t a skank like Roxxi.
“Won’t be long?” Roxxi repeated, cheekily beaming again. “Promise you’ll tell me all about it when it happens,” She hummed, squeezing Jo softly. “I know respectful, old people don’t do that, but we do, capisce?”
Jo’s love story was a little nausea-inducing. Roxxi adored it, but she couldn’t imagine her own life being so Cookie-Cutter-Lifetime-Movie-Perfect. Well, it already wasn’t, and she was complaining about it━so which was it really? “Well, you’re going to have a second. I know it.” Roxxi smiled sadly, though was that truly comforting coming from her? Probably not.
And was Chase her first? It felt like it. Perhaps it was too early to say━perhaps Roxxi was too scared to say it━but she couldn’t imagine loving anyone but him. She couldn’t imagine giving anyone else as much as herself as she’d given Chase. She hoped he knew that, too━through everything, he was the man she loved.
“Fine,” Roxxi sniffled, smiling sadly up at Jo. “Only if I’ll be yours.” Her smile turned cheeky before she snuggled in again. Jo would likely be the only person on Roxxi’s side of the Church; it wasn't as if she had any sisters anymore. Oh, and maybe she’d decorate Frank and Dick as bridesmaids. If Dick ever came back.
And if Chase ever actually married her. That would be the biggest mistake of his life, but she wanted it so bad.
“He’s been okay,” She sighed, “Better than you’d expect. Better than I would be if the roles were reversed.” Lifting a hand, she rubbed a few fresh tears off her cheeks. “Like I said, I’ve been pretty much living at his place since it happened. He lets me stay in and use his kitchen all day. We don’t really talk about it anymore.” She puffed out a heavy breath, “Which is okay. He comes home, and I’m in the middle of having some sort of dramatic freakout, and all he does is… I don’t know what he does. Chase Magic. He holds me, kisses me, and I feel okay again.” Her glossy, dark eyes slid up to Jo once more. “I really am screwed, aren’t I?” If she was talking about him like that, then she must be. “How do you survive being in love?”

She wasn’t about to say it aloud, not when she was squarely gonna land on Roxxi’s side with all of this, but Jo understood how Chase’s brother was just trying to do the right thing. Sometimes it left you just as racked with guilt after you opened your mouth, perhaps even more so, but at least the elephant in the room had been sent packing. Her upper lip rolled into the sharp edged trap of her teeth, was dragged back out of it slowly. The lies she hadn’t been able to tell anymore had ended her own marriage, but that was nothing like Roxxi’s situation now. Kaegan couldn’t have found out what she was – and she knew she’d been right in that, Magnus had kept his own turning a secret from him too – it would only have pushed him to offer his own life up and even though she’d had centuries of life afterwards, she couldn’t have asked that sort of sacrifice of him.
Being willing to put aside the past for the love that you had for someone who’d already put it behind them, that was far less of one. Perhaps the image of Roxxi and his brother together would plague Chase for a while, but in the end how he felt about Roxxi, what he would see in her dark eyes, that would make all the difference. Jo let the corner of her mouth rise faintly as she met those eyes now. ”Tell him that, if all of this comes out. Tell him how much he means to you, that he changed everything for you. It’ll take that sting away, I promise.” And that she knew for certain. Wrapped up in the warmth and comfort of Magnus’ arms on the side of a road in the rain, the sting of years and people lost had melted away in the gratitude for what they’d now been given.
That feeling was still with her. The sense that she was still held in the safety of the arms of someone who cared about her, who knew her, lingering as she held Roxxi that same way. Seven hundred years could change everything, but that. What those emotions meant had felt like they would be a conversation for another time, when both she and Magnus were ready to unpack what was happening between them. Roxxi wasn’t afraid to dig her hands into that Schrödinger’s box though, happy to put aside some of her emotional wreckage to try and match make them.
Was she still soothing Roxxi, or was she trying to soothe that part of herself that shook a little with nerves at the thought of actually sleeping with Magnus? Jo swallowed, unsure of the answer. She wanted to, she suspected Magnus had wanted to as well, but there was still that breathless feeling gripping on, like she was standing at a precipice again, wanting to tumble into something, unsure where it would land her though. ”I’ve had a lot of practice when it comes to restraint,” she murmured, humour threading her voice at least. When you’d had to leave the love of your life, it was easy to fall into the trap of never wanting to be in love again. That sort of loss cut you to the quick. Her lips curved, the heat filling her chest the same way it had her cheeks. ”I slept better than I had done in a long time. I’m not sure about him though.” Magnus hadn’t shied away from telling how he felt yet though. His gratitude and affection had poured out that night, each word stamping itself on her heart. If she hadn’t loved him before – in a purely platonic way, of course – she would’ve started to then. It was hard not to feel something like that, and OK, more, for such a good man. Opening her mouth about what was between them had felt a little like finally admitting it all to herself as well as Roxxi. Jo swallowed hard, shaking her head. She was glad to see the smile back on Roxxi’s face. ”I don’t think so.” Letting out her breath, the head shake became a nod. ”Every bit of it, I promise. It’ll be good to … share.” Magnus had Hector to vent to – or brag to, not that she imagined he would – and she had Roxxi (in a time where you didn’t hide all of that out of some sort of misguided shame, a time where you could be excited about it all).
They were still miles away from Roxxi’s prediction, but Jo felt her certainly reverberate through her chest. Her hand blindly felt for Roxxi’s, squeezing in appreciation and acknowledgement. Moments later it was resting at Roxxi’s chin, tipping it up so she could offer up some of that same certainty. ”Deal,” Jo promised, returning Roxxi’s smile. Roxxi might have had doubts over whether she’d get there with Chase right now, but she could see it, the good thing her friend needed in her life lingering right there on the horizon.
She’d not met Chase yet, but from what she’d heard, he was another good man and that gave her faith. Jo hummed lightly as she settled back against Roxxi’s pillows. Her fingers brushed Roxxi’s hair back from her damp cheeks, like she’d done with her kids once upon a time. ”He sounds amazing,” she said lightly, the corners of her mouth lifting. ”You’re not screwed because you love him. It sounds like he’s doing everything he can to take care of you, to make it better for you.” When you loved you wanted to be able to do that for them, to wipe away all that pain in any way you could. Remembering the way Magnus had come to her when Lincoln hadn’t come home, how she would’ve done anything to make it all better for him, Jo felt her heart ache.
Her smile softened, her shoulders rising and falling. ”You learn to trust it and you make the most of every minute of it. I can’t promise it’ll never hurt, because it does, sometimes it’ll tear you apart, but as long as you hold onto it, you do survive. You’ll survive. Now, you start on this, I’m gonna go grab us what you started putting together out there. We’re gonna eat, we’re gonna drink, and you’re gonna tell me more about Chase.” Jo pulled Roxxi into a hard hug, patting her back one last time before she thrust the bottle of wine into her hands. She scrambled off of the bed. There might still have been a wolf at the door with that video, but as long as Roxxi had Chase, everything was going to be alright in the end.
