The cold wasn’t a patch on back home, but this wind, Jesus. Kara felt the car bounce with it as she slammed the car door shut. Rain rattled against the glass, drowning out Roberto’s voice for a second. ”…home from the …” He went silent, like he’d left the conversation wide open for her to drop something into.
Dumping the phone into its cradle on the dash, Kara thumbed it onto speaker mode. ”If that was when am I gonna get home from the ass end of nowhere … the day before Christmas eve, I hope. It all depends on what’s happening down here, but right now, it looks like I’ll get free on time.” She glanced back at the driver’s side window. It all depended on how many more bodies dropped out of here after an encounter with ‘something wild’. If the town’s running tally was anything to go by they were gonna run out of people before whatever was doing it was stopped – however many things were doing it.
Roberto’s snort filled the car and Kara could almost feel her brother’s shove to her shoulder that had always followed it when they were kids. She slipped on her seatbelt, glancing at the screen again before she pulled out. ”I said you might have to drag mom home from the hospital when you get here, but that works too. She’s been swapping shifts and stacking them like cards to make sure she gets time off when you’re here.” She heard a rustle at the other end, a lower murmur of voices.
Taking the pause, Kara slipped on her seatbelt and pulled away from the lot at the edge of the woods. The flashing lights of sheriff’s department vehicles continued to bathe the trees. She put them in the rear view mirror, heading back towards town. This one really wasn’t going to end up on her stack. Every now and then a heart attack in the woods really did just seem to be that. ”I’m guessing that was a summons,” she said as she head Roberto sigh down the line.
”A call out, some scout leader – I shit you not – has had a fall out in the park. The kids he had out there called it in. We’re heading out in a truck to bring him in. I’ll see you at Christmas OK?”
Her throat felt tight. It didn’t matter that Virgil was probably back there by now – he hadn’t shown his face in town since she’d bolted away from him – home was home and it’d been too long since she’d been there. It didn’t matter that Valorie was here, either, an entire holiday weekend spent with her cousin was a recipe for a fight right now and she’d get her fill of that back home with Roberto. ”I’ll see you then. Be careful out there. Love you.” Kara’s voice was hoarse, the feeling in her throat thickening as Roberto shot the sentiment back and the phone went dead. Reaching out she tapped it off, and finally looked up at the road.
Not the one back to the motel.
Familiar, vaguely. Somewhere in town, but nowhere she would’ve gone to consciously. It only took the thought that she’d slipped into that fugue state to have her heart racing, leaping up into her throat like a cork that would stop tight in it. The voices were a whisper in her ears, drifting in like a tide now that Roberto wasn’t preoccupying her. Kara eased off of the accelerator, coasting in to the curb outside a pretty little two storey place – small for Mystic Falls’ standard. Everything in her was screaming not to head in, but this thing didn’t give you much choice. If she didn’t scream in there, it was likely to be out here.
The rain still pounded down as she slipped out of the car, remembering to close and lock the door behind her. It hit her shoulders, plastered her hair against her head as she crept towards the house. Up onto the porch, through the cracked open front door. The house was silent around her – not a surprise, she realised minutes later, when a quick sweep of the house with her weapon in her hand revealed nothing but smears of blood and something black and sooty on the hallway floor. Upstairs she stood on the top step, that feeling growing and growing in her ears until suddenly it released with an odd little pop, like a bubble finally giving way. A first. No. That wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
Kara ran down, into the hallway, making it to the door before she heard the porch creak outside. She eased forward, frowning at the man standing out there, maybe sheltering from the rain, maybe coming back to the scene of the crime. ”Excuse me,” she said tightly. ”Can I help you?” Can I pull a weapon on you and finally make an arrest here for whatever nightmare had obviously happened.

Med school was nearly over for Evan and when that time came he couldn’t wait to start working properly. He had known for a long time that being a doctor was what he wanted to do and he had been working hard for years to make that happen. It wasn’t easy but then one thing he had learned a long time ago was that nothing worthwhile ever was. It took work and dedication and Evan was still certain that he had made the right decision no matter what happened next. His family had been taken from him a few years ago, Milena was the only one that he had left now, but he knew that he still wanted to make them proud. His parents were so happy for him when he was accepted into medical school and he knew that he wasn’t going to let them down. These days he had other things to focus on as well, he still didn’t know who was responsible for killing his parents or trying to kill Milena and then there was the missing time and waking up in strange places or covered in dirt. Evan didn’t understand what was going on but he knew that he needed to get to the bottom of it and soon. Something was going on but the truth was that Evan didn’t even know where to start with figuring it out. It was the same when it came to what had happened the day that he had gone to the house following the lead he had been given on the man who was supposed to be his father. Evan had been knocked unconscious somehow only to wake up outside while the house he had been in burned to the ground. For some reasons strange things seemed to follow him around and Evan knew that he needed to get to the bottom of it so he could make sure that no one else ended up getting hurt. That day Evan had been heading home from his shift at the hospital when he felt himself being drawn in completely the opposite direction. He couldn’t explain why but it felt wrong to even so much as try and turn the car around so all he could do was go with it. Normally when he ended up in unusual places he couldn’t remember how he got there but this time was different, this time he was aware of everything that was going on and it was almost like there was a voice in the back of his head directing him to where he needed to go. There had been occasions when Evan had looked in the mirror and for a moment he had thought that he had seen orange eyes looking back at him but the moment he blinked his eyes were back to normal. He kept dismissing it, certain that he was seeing things, but this time as he looked in the rearview mirror when he blinked those orange eyes didn’t go away. Something different was going on and Evan couldn’t help but hope that he might just be about to get some answers. Pulling up in a parking lot, Evan had no idea why he had been drawn there because he didn’t recognise it at all but before he knew it he was climbing out of the car and this time as he caught sight of himself in the mirror his eyes were back to normal. Somehow it was still like his feet knew exactly where to take him and he soon found himself face to face with a woman. She seemed just as confused by his presence there as he was. “Perhaps. Did something happen here?” he asked, unable to shake that feeling. KARA MORETTI

It went against every instinct she had to just let herself go with that invisible pressure inside of her head. As a teenager she’d fought every time she’d felt it, unable to hold onto her mom’s advice when she knew that she was going to end up screaming over a dead body. It was a nightmare without end, one that clung to her mind in sleep afterwards, leaving her gasping awake, even when it wasn’t to the actual sound of those voices that whispered through her mind and led her along the world’s worst breadcrumb trail to someone who’d died horrifically.
Kara hadn’t exactly given herself over to it willingly this time either. She’d been lulled out of awareness by the conversation with Roberto, the plans to finally get home for a break, the lingering torment of Virgil’s possible continued presence in town. The distractions had piled up, only parting enough for her to realise that the autopilot she thought she’d gone on to get back to the motel had led her elsewhere instead. Every instinct then told her to leave, but from experience Kara knew it would’ve been like walking through mud instead of the pounding rain.
Out of the rain the voices were louder, following her around the house like a trail of static until suddenly, confusingly, they disappeared. It had never happened before. Once the process had started there was no going back. Someone was dying and she was there to herald with the scream that would feel as though it were tearing her apart. Thrown by it, and by the smudges of blood and something else upstairs in the house, she rushed towards the door. If this had all stopped she wasn’t going to stand around waiting for it to start again.
If it hadn’t been for the man standing there, she might have made it too. Instead Kara found herself drawing up short in the doorway. Her stomach still felt hollow, her mind whirring away in that high speed mode that had her suspicious of him instantly. She let out a long breath as she threw the question out, her hand flattening against her stomach, sliding towards her hip as though she were soothing herself, but it just put her hand closer to the weapon that was … still in the truck. Damn it!
She remained standing there stiffly, the memory of those stains upstairs enough to keep her on edge as he threw a question right back at her. Kara glanced sideways, then reeled herself back in. ”Perhaps,” she threw back at him, just as vaguely. Her frown deepened as she hunched her shoulders. ”Are you here to see someone? Do you know who lives here?” Where she was standing might have made it seem like she did. She stepped forward reaching behind her to half close the door, almost like she could block out what she’d seen upstairs. There wasn’t going to be doing any of that when she got back to the motel later. Each scene like this, each body, stacked up in her memory like cordwood, just waiting for its moment to burn.

Something strange had been going on lately and Evan still had no idea what that was. He had woken up in strange places or covered in dirt more times than he cared to admit and no matter what he tried he just couldn’t figure out what was going on. It seemed like he was sleepwalking and he knew that it could be as a result of everything that had happened with his family but nothing seemed able to stop it. Then there were the glowing orange eyes. There were times when he saw them when he looked in the mirror but then he blinked or looked away and they were gone again and then there was the missing time. Evan felt like he was going crazy and he knew that he should perhaps talk to someone at the hospital about it but the truth was that he didn’t even know how to explain what was going on or who to trust with it. He knew that his sister was supernatural and he was starting to wonder whether this was a sign that perhaps he was too. Either way he knew that he couldn’t go on like he was, he needed to get to the bottom of it sooner or later and he was determined to do just that. There were times when he felt like he wasn’t alone, occasionally it was like he could hear a voice in the back of his mind trying to help him but if anything it was a comfort to know that he wasn’t alone. As it was right now he had been drawn to the house and he had no idea why but he knew that he needed to get to the bottom of it. He could almost feel himself being pulled towards the place and it was then that he ran into someone. He had hoped that he wouldn’t have to try and explain himself but he could already see that he wasn’t going to be that lucky. He shouldn’t really have been surprised when she threw the response back at him but as she asked if he was there to see someone or if he knew who lived there, Evan frowned. “It’s hard to explain but for some reason I was drawn here,” he said, knowing that he had to choose his words carefully. “I don’t know why or who has been living here, I just know that I need to be here.”KARA MORETTI

There’d been plenty of towns that felt wrong, the ones that had a shudder running down her spine as she drove into them – places that’d lived up to that spooky feeling once the truth had started unravelling there. Few had felt as strange as Mystic Falls did though. It wasn’t just the occasional violent murder here, the town seemed to be steeped in blood and Kara had found herself getting used to that shaky feeling. She shouldn’t have done. Whether Virgil was on her heels or not, she should’ve dumped this all back into Frank’s lap and taken the break she’d deserved for months.
The slow grind had left her feeling like she was swimming through mud. Everything, except the worst of all of this was muffled. If she could make it sharpen around the edges, maybe she would be able to see enough to figure out what was really going on. She couldn’t though. The path remained endless, the weight the same.
Kara drew in a slow breath. The air still smelled like ozone, as though some bigger storm was on its way. She tried to swallow it down, to brush it off like she would’ve done the rain drops clinging to her hair and clothes. ”Hard to explain? That’s this town in a nutshell. Nothing here makes sense.” Her voice was tight, the shaking of her head doing nothing to loosen it. That feeling wasn’t disappearing with the vanishing of the voices.
She kept her hand off of her weapon at least, flexing her fingers against the edge of the door as she pulled it shut behind her. That wasn’t going to keep anything in or out, but maybe it would give her a few seconds if all of this exploded and whatever it was she’d been dragged here to deal with happened. Her frown deepened, her throat going dry. ”What do you mean need to be here? You saying you’re a psychic or something? I’m pretty sure that’s all bullshit.” Kara could’ve cursed though. She didn’t sound at all certain about that, couldn’t fake it for even a few seconds.
There was a thump from somewhere deep inside the house. A dragging noise that had her twisting, fumbling for her weapon. This wasn’t meant to go this way, there wasn’t supposed to be other people there that she was going to have to shield from whatever was going on. "I want you go back up,” she told the man hoarsely, not looking over her shoulder. ”Crap!” Another thump echoed through the house and this time it was punctuated with a shriek that had her rushing forward. ”I’m a special agent with … I’m an agent. You need to stay here, OK? Call 911, but don’t come inside.” Kara knew there was a tremor in her voice, but she pushed the door open anyway. With her weapon up, she slipped inside, staring up the stairs with wide eyes. No sign of anything. It didn’t mean that she’d lost her mind, only that whatever this was had stayed out of view. That meant she was going to have to go hunting for it.

Something strange had been going on with Evan ever since he woke up outside the house that had burned down. He was missing time, waking up in strange places, seeing things and sometimes waking up with dirt or ash everywhere. None of it made sense and he wanted nothing more than for it all to stop so he could go back to being a normal guy but deep down he knew that wasn’t going to happen. His life hadn’t been normal since the day that his parents died and he would only be kidding himself if he thought otherwise. Something strange was going on right now and he knew that sooner or later he was going to have to get to the bottom of it but for now at least he knew that he needed to just focus on figuring out why he had been drawn here of all places when he knew that he had never been there before. “I’m starting to get that impression,” Evan nodded as the woman said that nothing in Mystic Falls made sense. Evan had heard about strange things going on in the town but most of his time had been spent at Whitmore or the hospital so he had never really thought too much about it. It was only now that he was venturing into Mystic Falls more that he was starting to see it for himself and it was a little worrying to say the least. “Something like that,” he admitted as she asked if he was a psychic or something. “I don’t really know what is going on with me right now, I just know that I was driving home and then suddenly I found myself being pulled here instead,” he explained. He really didn’t understand it either but that was what had happened. He knew that kind of thing wasn’t normal but he also wasn’t sure that there was anything that he could do about it so he knew that he needed to try and figure out why he had been drawn here. “Besides, you don’t sound like someone who doesn’t believe in that kind of thing,” he added. If anything there was a part of him that wondered if perhaps she knew more about what was going on here than he did but he knew that there was only one way to find out. There were noises coming from inside the house and each one was enough to fill Evan with dread. He couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something just beneath the surface waiting to be let free but what that was or what was going on he had no idea. Either way he knew that he was in the right place for once and he shook his head as she told him to go back up. “That’s not going to happen, what if you get into trouble in there?” he asked, knowing that he couldn’t let something happen to her. He hadn’t been able to save his parents or sister when they were attacked because he hadn’t been there at the time but now he was there and he knew that he couldn’t just stand on the sidelines. The way the woman hesitated about who she was an agent with didn’t exactly fill Evan with confidence but he knew that he had to let her do her job. “Alright,” he nodded, pulling his phone out and doing just that as the woman headed inside. A few minutes had passed by the time he hung up and as he slipped his phone into his pocket he heard another scream and before he even knew what was happening he was heading inside, his eyes glowing once more as the hellhound took over and started moving through the house looking for the source of the noise. Back home wasn’t perfect – that was where she’d been exposed to the supernatural to start with after all – but at least she could say she’d known just about everybody in the neighbourhood where she’d grown up. Those connections made a difference, especially when you were trying to pry into what was going on somewhere. People were more willing to talk if they knew you. She wasn’t Agent Moretti to them, she was Kara, she was Cisco and Dana’s youngest, Roberto’s pain in the ass little sister. Here nobody really knew her and she didn’t know them – didn’t know who she could trust. The moments when she felt it, like this, always still remained wreathed in doubts, as though she was constantly waiting to be shown it’d been a mistake to let anybody in.
”You’re not from around here either,” Kara said dryly. It shouldn’t have been surprising. Mystic Falls might’ve looked like the typical idyllic little rural town, but honestly, it was anything but what it’s picturesque surface suggested. Strange things happened here and she was tired of feeling out of her depth all the time. Maybe Virgil’s arrival here should’ve helped to steady her – a little taste of the familiar at her fingertips – but it had been the absolute opposite. As usual he’d just made it worse.
She hadn’t intended on revealing anything of the supernatural world to the random guy who’d shown up on the doorstep just when she was about to scream, but he was the one who’d started hinting about it all in a way that definitely left her more rattled instead of reassured. Damn it! As he carried on explaining, Kara folded her arms over her chest, like that would stop the internal tremors. ”Has that ever happened before? Did you hear something?” He’d known he was being pulled somewhere, surely that meant he wasn’t a banshee just coming into his power. She’d never stumbled across someone like her at a death scene, it was like a one body, one banshee sort of thing. Or she’d thought it was. Kara snorted, trying to brush the thought off, but she felt shaky enough to know that the colour had probably drained from her face when he’d mentioned being drawn here. ”I’m a government agent, not believing in weird shit kinda comes with the job title.” That wasn’t a yes or no though. The real answer was that she’d seen far too much to ever be able to scoff about something this creepy.
As though whatever higher power was pulling the strings here decided to make things worse, the noises started up inside the house. The voices were silent now, but Kara still felt a pressure rising inside of her as she reached for her gun again. It was her job to keep bystanders out of the way of these situations, but he wasn’t listening. ”That’s why I’m armed. You’re not. If I take you in there then my attention’s going to be split between you and dealing with that. Please.” Thankfully he did what she asked him to, pulling his phone out, staying outside to leave her free to deal with … that thing.
It had to have been hiding up there the entire time, waiting for her to leave to carry on its murderous streak. Veins crawled beneath its eyes, fangs already gleaming with the woman’s blood as she reached the bedroom at the end of the hallway. The woman screamed again, trying to twist out of the man’s grip but he only laughed. ”Put her down,” Kara ordered, her voice steady despite the quaking in her gut. ”Let her walk out of here. The cops will be here in a minute. You’re gonna have a whole house full of people like me.” Not quite like her though. As the woman shrieked again, she pulled against that thing’s hold and dropped a couple of inches. It was enough. She couldn’t risk screaming to knock it over, but the bullets would work. Not hearing the guy from outside coming into the house, Kara took aim and shot at the vampire.
