The moment Adelina had mentioned her dads’ first names that day, Ben was certain that he must have been hearing things. He hadn’t even been paying attention to why their names had come up in the first place but the moment he had heard them he’d needed to know more. Her surname wasn’t uncommon so he hadn’t for one moment thought that she could be connected to the Antonio Alvarez that he had fought with during the war but then she had pulled out a family photo on her phone and Ben had realised that it wasn’t just Antonio that she was related to, she was related to Ethan as well. Ben’s curse meant that he’d had to move around a lot but during the war he had at least been able to mask the monster attacks and do some good to protect the country. Even before he was cursed he was a warrior and in a way it had felt good being able to get back to his roots like that. He was there when Ethan had died in battle and he had seen the way that Antonio had changed afterwards. Truth be told he had wondered if there was something there between them but during the thick of the battle it was easy to draw closer to each other without anything else being there between them so he hadn’t thought about it too much. As it turned out from what Adelina had told him they had found each other years later and they had gotten married and Ben really was happy for them. He had thought about asking Adelina not to say anything to her parents about him because he didn’t want to go reopening old wounds if the war was something that they would much rather forget but Adelina had said that she thought they would be happy to see him and Ben couldn’t deny that he was curious about the life they had built for themselves. He hadn’t known that they were supernatural back then but they had managed to build a home for themselves in Mystic Falls and if he was honest Ben had a feeling that he might be able to learn a few things from them about that. He and Jed had moved into their own place and they knew what they wanted their future to look like but knowing that and making it happen were two very different things. In the end Ben realised that it wouldn’t hurt to reach out to them, they could easily turn him away if they wanted to but he had a feeling that they wouldn’t do that. They were good people and the three of them had gone through something awful together. Ben had made friends in Adelina, Gabriela and the rest of the squad but the truth was that he regretted the fact that he hadn’t made lasting connections with people from his past and he knew that he wanted to change that. It was with that in mind that he had accepted Adelina’s invitation when she had invited him over that day after school knowing that Jed was going to be busy working with Eddie and Summer for a while. As they made their way up the path Ben couldn’t believe how nice the house was and he didn’t hesitate in following Adelina inside. “Hey, anyone home?” she called out as she made her way into the house and started looking around for her dads. “I have someone here who wants to see you,” she added, not wanting to give away who it was just yet. — all he wanted was to receive the love he gave —
Ethan was having a bit of a lazy day — he'd slept in that day and then got up to finish some house chores before finding his way back to bed. Not to sleep, but to enjoy watching the second season of The Great British Bake Off. Milo was currently asleep on his lap while Ethan had the covers thrown over his lower half just for the sake of getting cozy. He had one hand on top of Milo's hand just to give him some scratches and attention. The little pup had made his way into the bedroom and climbed on the bed despite Ethan warning him multiple times not to get on it. Apparently, the internet doesn't agree with letting your dog sleep with you on the bed. But Milo had such a cute face that it was difficult to tell him no, so he let it be for now. Soon, the pup dozed off and Ethan just stayed busy watching the show. While it was tempting to take a nap and fully indulge in his lazy day off from work, he couldn't just waste it away like that.
He reached for the remote when he heard a noise downstairs that sounded a lot like the door opening and closing. Ethan glanced over at the time and saw that it was around the time that school concluded. Ethan looked down and saw that Milo was already staring in the direction of the door of the bedroom, ready to sprint downstairs to see who it was. Ethan prompted him to go and the pup was more than happy to get off his lap, giving Ethan the space needed to get up as well. He reached for the remote to shut the TV off and made his way out of the bedroom. "I'm here, kiddo." Ethan spoke up as he made his way to the to the stairs to head on downstairs to greet Adelina. But then her next words made him stop for a moment, confusion written across his face in bold letters.
The way she phrased her words made it seem like Ethan should know the person she was talking about. But he can't think of anyone off the top of his head. His curiosity soon took hold of him and he made his way downstairs. His eyes settled on Adelina once he was halfway down the stairs. "Who is—" The question died on his lips when his eyes relaxed on the guest that Adelina had brought along with her. Ethan frowned a little, his lips parting and closing as he glanced between Adelina and Ben, wondering if this was some sort of weird hallucination or coincidence, but no. Ethan had never forgotten Ben's face even though it'd been such a long time. How could he? All the good memories he had of that hellhole were a mixture of his time with Antonio and Ben. Seeing him pushed him far down the memory lane and only seemed to snap out of it when he realized belatedly that he'd just been staring at Ben without saying anything, his expression undoubtedly going through many emotions all at the same time. "Ben?" Ethan finally spoke up as he finally made his way downstairs the rest of the way. "Is it really you?"

Ben couldn’t help but feel nervous as he drove them to Adelina’s home. The moment she had shown him the photo he had recognised her two dads but the truth was that he wasn’t sure what the two of them had been through since he had last seen them or if they would even remember him. Before Ashur died Ben was a warrior, he had fought to protect his village and he had been good at it. Over the years since then his curse had shaped his life far too much for his liking but he’d seen civilisations rise and fall. There were times when he had ended up getting involved but those times were few and far between because he hadn’t been able to stay in one place for long enough. Fighting during World War II was different though, by then he had managed to learn to hide the monster attacks in the chaos that was swirling around them. He hadn’t planned on finding two friends among the fighting but that was exactly what had happened. He had fought alongside them and out of everyone that had come and gone from his life before he’d arrived in Mystic Falls, they were always the two people who had meant the most to him. He had seen Ethan die during the war and he had seen just how devastated Toni was by his loss. He had tried to put on a brave face for the rest of them but Ben had seen the way that something inside of him had died that way and his heart really had gone out to him. It seemed a little surreal that decades later they had found each other once more and they were actually together but Ben really was happy for them. He knew that his presence might well end up reminding them of a time that they would much rather forget but there was a time when they were really good friends to him and he knew that if there was a chance that he might be able to get that back then he wanted to take it. A long time ago Ben had resigned himself to the fact that he would end up outliving everyone who came into his life but now a lot of his friends were immortal and judging by the way Ethan and Toni didn’t seem to have changed a bit, it looked like they were too. He hadn’t wanted to grill Adelina too much on the drive over and once they were inside the house she was calling out to find out if anyone was home. It wasn’t long before a familiar voice sounded and Ben saw the smile form on Adelina’s face at the sound. “Hey dad,” she grinned. “Is anyone else home yet?” she asked, knowing that even if they weren’t then they were sure to be soon. Ben could hear the confusion in Ethan’s voice as Adelina said that there was someone who wanted to see him. All of a sudden he wasn’t sure whether this was such a good idea after all since he didn’t want to end up reopening old wounds that had healed over years ago for Ethan and Toni but then Ethan was there and the surprise was written all over his face. As Ethan said his name at last, Ben nodded. “Yeah, it’s really me,” he nodded. “I feel like I should be asking you that question though, I saw you die,” he added, hoping that it wasn’t a touchy subject or anything like that but needing to put it out there nonetheless. “I’m sorry for just showing up like this, Adelina and I were talking and she showed me a photo of you guys. As soon as I saw it was you and Toni I had to come and see you, I hope that’s okay,” he said gently. “If it’s not I can go,” he added quickly, not wanting his friend to feel like he had to relieve those old memories or see another person from his past if he wasn’t ready. Ethan felt a gentle smile form on his lips when Adelina greeted him. "Uh, nope, just me. For now. Toni should be back soon." Ethan answered with a quick nod of his head following. Then, it was time for him to see who her guest was. He wondered if it was one of Adelina's friends, but the way she phrased it made it seem like he'd know the guest, so of course, Ethan was curious. But he never would've thought that his guest would wind up being Ben. His surprise was quite evident on his face as he stared at Ben without saying anything at first, his lips parting and closing much like a fish in water. Eventually, he managed to push through his surprise and finally spoke Ben's name which tasted so foreign on his tongue at first.
The confirmation was all that he needed to hear to know that the person in front of him was actually Ben, not someone bearing close resemblance to his friend from war. As much as he wanted to ask how that was even possible, he knew now better than most people that nothing was impossible in the world of the supernaturals. He figured it'd be a rude question to ask what Ben was when he hadn't even offered him something to drink. Ethan let out a brief chuckle at Ben's next words. "Touché." It should be impossible for him to even be standing here today but with his abilities as a Phoenix, impossible was a blurred line. "I'm, uh, I'm a Phoenix. I came back to life not too long after... y'know..." Ethan trusted Ben, so he didn't wish to keep him in the dark. It's not like he can come up with a logical explanation as to how he was back to life after literally blowing up. He knew in moments like these, honesty was the best policy, right? There were so many questions running through his head, too many questions to the point where he had no idea where to even start.
Ethan snapped out of his thoughts, his eyes relaxing on Ben once again as he listened intently. "Woah, no, no, you don't have to go." Ethan was quick to reassure. "I know for a fact that Toni will be really happy to see you, Ben." Ethan added a moment later with a gentle smile on his lips. "I'm really happy too. It just caught me by surprise, that's all.' Ethan assured him once again, his smile still present on his lips.
"I'm really happy you decided to come, Ben. It's really good to see you." Ethan said, his eyes focused on his close friend. "I'm not going to lie, I'd really like to hug you right now. Is that okay?"

Ben had already come to accept the fact that his life had changed the moment he had arrived in Mystic Falls but he knew that it was for the better. He had fallen in love and he also had friends who had become family around him. He already has so much more than he ever had done before so to see the photo of the Alvarez family together and recognise the girls' parents even though he hadn't met them since arriving in town. He had known what the girls' surname was but he hadn't for one moment thought that they were related to Toni, let alone that he was their dad. The moment he had seen the photo of them together he had put the pieces together, though, and straight away he had known that he had needed to see it for himself. He had always thought there was a connection between Ethan and Toni that went beyond the brotherhood that had formed while they were fighting in the war but they were literally in the middle of a war zone and then Ethan had died so Ben had never said anything to them about it. He wasn't sure if they would have been ready to accept it back then but it seemed that they had now and he truly was glad about that. The moment Ethan spoke Ben knew that it was definitely him and he felt a smile touching his lips as he said that Toni would be back soon. It really was surreal seeing him again but Ben couldn't help but feel beyond happy about it. So many people had come and gone from his life but Ethan and Toni were the people he had become closest to over the course of his long life before he arrived in Mystic Falls and he really had regretted not staying in touch with Toni when they returned home after Ethan died but Ben had known that he wouldn't be able to explain the fact that he didn't age so he had thought that it was for the best. Now he knew that he had been wrong about that though and he knew that he wasn't going to make the same mistake again. He couldn't resist responding the way he did to Ethan's words and he couldn't help but laugh along with him. Ben had known about the supernatural during the war but he hadn't thought that any of the guys fighting alongside him were supernatural but it turned out that he was wrong. "That makes a lot of sense. We were devastated to lose you, I'm so glad you came back," he said sincerely. "Did you know what you were back then?" he asked, unable to deny that he was curious. "I'm guessing Toni is a dragon like the girls?" he added. He knew that Toni could be a different species but Ben wouldn't be surprised if the girls took after him. "In the spirit of honesty, I'm a Nephilim," Ben said, knowing that he could trust Ethan with that completely. Ethan had trusted him with what he was without hesitation and Ben knew that they would have each other's backs the same way they did during the war. It really was so good seeing Ethan again but even so Ben knew that there were sure to be bad memories associated with that time for Ethan so he knew that the last thing he wanted was to make things awkward for him or bring up bad memories again. Ethan was soon saying that he didn't have to go, though, and Ben nodded. "I can understand that, I just wasn't sure how you would feel about being reminded about what happened back then," Ben admitted. He knew that Ethan and Toni being around each other probably reminded them of that time but they were made for each other so Ben knew that was different. "It's really good to see you too brother, I've missed you," he said sincerely. As Ethan said he would really like to hug him and asked if that was okay, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. "Of course it is," he said before stepping forward and wrapping his arms around his friend. It was at that time that Adelina said she would leave them to it. "Thank you so much for this Adelina," he said sincerely, knowing that he would always be grateful to her for reuniting him with two of his oldest friends. "So how have you been? What have you been up to? I want to hear everything," he said as he turned back to look at Ethan. "Adelina said you and Toni are married, congratulations! I always thought there was something going on between the two of you back then."ETHAN ALVAREZ

Ethan's eyes softened as Ben explained how they were devastated to lose him. He had no doubt in his heart about that. With how close he'd been to Antonio and Ben, he knew it must have really hurt to see him go like that. "Thank you, Ben. I'm really happy to be back, too." He just hoped that it had happened in a way that didn't have to leave them so devastated. But it was all too late to change the past now. "Oh, I had absolutely no idea." Ethan shook his head. It would have made things a lot easier, at least. But then again, explaining his supernatural status to his friends would have been really difficult. "Yup. You've definitely got that right." Ethan revealed a moment later. He knew he could trust Ben. They had each other's backs back then and he had a feeling that hadn't changed despite the time apart.
"Oh." Ethan's expression morphed into one of surprise when Ben explained that he was a Nephilim. "That's pretty badass if you ask me." Ethan added a moment later with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "Did you know back then?" Ethan asked, his curiosity visible in the tone of his voice.
"You and Toni were the only two good things that came out of that hellhole, so I'm definitely really happy to see you again." Ethan assured him with a gentle smile resting on his lips. When Ben said that it was good to see him again, his smile only brightened and once he had the green light to hug Ben, he was all too happy to take a step forward and wrap his arms around his close friend. "I've missed you too, man." Ethan replied in the midst of the hug, wanting to express how much he'd missed Ben.
"Thank you, kiddo." Ethan thanked her sincerely after pulling away from the hug, his eyes resting on Ben's again, his smile as bright as ever. "You took the questions right outta my mouth." Ethan admitted with a chuckle following. He was just about to ask Ben about his life and what he has been up to since their departure.
"Oh my god," Ethan let out a soft chuckle of embarrassment when Ben told him that he'd always thought something was going on between them back then. Seems like it was obvious to everyone but them, huh? "Thank you, though! Yeah, we got married." Ethan lifted the hand that had the ring to showcase it with a grin on his lips. "Okay, c'mon, let's get you something to drink and I'll tell you everything." Ethan clapped Ben's shoulder and made his way to the kitchen after gesturing for him to come along. He made his way to the fridge to retrieve two bottles of beer for them to drink, keeping Toni's in the fridge so that it won't turn lukewarm.
With the drinks in hand, he gave Ben his beer and kept his own in his own before sitting down with him after guiding him to the living room that way they can sit comfortably and talk. "Okay, uh, let's see, where to start..." Ethan opened his bottle of beer but didn't take a sip yet.
"I guess from the beginning's good. Okay, so, I come back to life, yeah? Of course, I wanted to get back to you and Toni, but it just wasn't possible. I mean, how would I even begin to explain what had happened? So, I started traveling instead. You could say I was on the move to find myself and who I really am and as corny as it sounds, I found myself the second I found what I wanted to do in life. Being a firefighter. Now, to give you a bit of a backstory, I was in my motel, resting for the night only to wake up to the smell of heavy smoke in the air. There was like, a huge fire two levels up and as I was leaving my room to head downstairs, I heard someone calling for help. I went the opposite direction from the stairs and straight to the little girl screaming for help. I brought her downstairs and out of the motel where the paramedics took care of her. One of the firefighters actually, uh," Ethan paused to let out a chuckle. "He told me that I was one hell of a brave idiot. He told me that the fire station could use someone like me and that was it, man." Ethan said with a happy smile resting on his lips.
"I'd found my purpose. So, of course, I started working on becoming one. It was grueling, let me tell you that." Ethan said with a soft chuckle falling from his lips, taking a pause to take a sip from his drink. "But, I made it in the end and it felt pretty damn good." Ethan said a moment later after swallowing. "I guess, in a way, it felt good because becoming a firefighter had been my dream and not my parents'. God knows I've been working my ass off in the past to try and please my parents. To make 'em proud. But, uh, they never actually cared. I don't think they care even to this day." Ethan let out a brief chuckle, although it was a little hollow before he shook his head.
"Anyway, um, I started dating someone. Her name was May. She was really sweet and I could tell she had her own ghosts to deal with. But we tried to make things work. We tried so hard, but unfortunately, it didn't work. We weren't in love. We both went our separate ways from there." Ethan said with a sheepish smile as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I guess it just didn't feel right and I had no idea why back then, but now I know. It didn't feel right because my heart was with Toni. Had been from the moment I laid my eyes on him." He admitted with a half-smile resting on his lips.
"I transferred to the fire station here in Mystic Falls when I heard there was an open spot for me and fate has it that Toni's living in the same town as me. I brought Ela home after someone had actually tried to take money from her. The door opened and there he was. Toni. You can imagine how surprised I was but I guess a part of me thought that it was someone who resembled him or something but it was actually him. We spent so much time together after then, I even moved in with them and from there, I fell deeper and deeper in love with him, man." Ethan said with a soft smile resting on his lips. "I should also tell you that I'm a dad. Not only to Ela and Eli, but also to Elias. He's actually May's kid. The woman I had gotten in a relationship with. I actually had no idea that she was pregnant. If I had known, I would've stayed. I would've tried again to make it work, but... I had no idea. Originally, we were going to take in Elias either way because he deserved a better life and we could give him that. He'd suffered enough so we wanted to give him a chance. Then, we figured out through a project. It showed us Elias' family tree and lo and behold, my name was there, same as May's." Ethan tried to think of anything he'd missed but he couldn't think of any.
"That's it, basically. Now you know everything." Ethan said with a grin resting on his lips. "Now it's your turn. I wanna know everything."

Ben hadn’t really had high hopes of anything changing when he got to Mystic Falls, he had been cursed for thousands of years and even though there was a part of him that hadn’t given up on breaking that curse, at the same time he hadn’t really thought that Mystic Falls would end up being that different to any other town. Jed had taken a chance on him, though, and now not only did Ben finally have a place where he belonged that he could call home but he had fallen in love and he had made a lot of friends as well. Reconnecting with old friends while he was there had seemed far too good to be true when he had learned who Adelina’s parents were but now here Ethan was standing before him and Ben couldn’t help but feel glad that he had taken a chance. As Ethan said he was happy to be back too, Ben felt a smile touch his lips. “You’ve got a really nice place here, I’m so happy for you. The girls are amazing as well,” he said gently. Things had definitely changed from the way they used to be when they were fighting in the war together, that was for sure. “I bet that was a shock then,” he nodded as Ethan said that he hadn’t had any idea what he was back then. Ben had seen how devastated Toni was when Ethan had died and Ben had felt that same sadness at losing his friend. The three of them had become close during the war and knowing that Ethan and Toni were both living in town was pretty incredible as far as Ben was concerned. As Ethan confirmed that Toni was a dragon, Ben found himself nodding. “That’s really cool, so is the fact that you’re a phoenix,” he admitted. It explained why Ethan looked the same as he had done back then and he knew that it would be the same for Toni as well. Until now Ben had lost everyone he had ever known sooner or later but he really hoped that this time was going to be different. As Ben said it was pretty badass that he was a Nephilim, Ben couldn’t help but laugh. “You wouldn’t be saying that if you knew what my life had been like until now, trust me,” he chuckled before rubbing the back of his neck as Ethan asked if he knew what he was back then. “Yeah I did, I’ve known for a long time,” he confirmed. “I’m a lot older than I look.” He knew that he could trust Ethan with the truth but Ben wasn’t really sure how to tell him how old he really was just yet. “I know what you mean, the two of you made it all worth it back then,” Ben nodded. It had been his decision to fight in the war, no one had made that decision for him, but he hadn’t realised just how difficult it would be. Ethan and Toni had become brothers to him during that time, though, and for the first time in a long time he had felt like he belonged somewhere and that was something that he had never taken for granted. Wrapping his arms around Ethan in return, Ben hugged him back tightly. “I still can’t believe you’re here,” he admitted, a smile touching his lips before taking a half step backwards as Ethan thanked Adelina. It felt so surreal to be here with Ethan now and Ben couldn’t help but laugh as Ethan said that he had taken the questions right out of his mouth. “Don’t be embarrassed, it was a different time back then,” Ben said gently. He knew that it wouldn’t have been easy at all for the two of them to come to terms with what was going on back then so he was beyond glad that they’d had the chance to do that now when the world was a much more accepting place. “I’m so happy for you guys, if anyone deserves to be happy then it’s you two,” he assured Ethan. They had been through so much but somehow they had still found their way back to each other and Ben was beyond happy for them. “Sounds good,” he nodded as Ethan said about getting a drink and then he would tell him everything. Taking the beer that Ethan offered him, Ben thanked him before opening the bottle and taking a sip. Listening intently as Ethan started explaining what he had been through since the war, Ben’s expression softened as Ethan said that he had been trying hard to please his parents but he didn’t think that they ever actually cared. “You deserve so much better than that, you always put everyone else first and they’re idiots if they can’t see the great guy you’ve become.” There wasn’t a doubt in Ben’s mind that his words were true, Ethan really was a great guy and how his parents couldn’t see that really was beyond him. “I’m so glad you found your purpose though, there’s nothing worse than drifting through life not knowing what you’re meant to be doing,” he added. That was something Ben knew firsthand because he had done that for much longer than he cared to admit. Ethan seemed to have pulled his life together now though and Ben really was happy for him. “Sounds like the girl was lucky you were there as well.”Listening as Ethan continued, Ben felt a smile touch his lips as Ethan said that he knew now the reason why it didn’t work with May was because he was in love with Toni. “It’s funny how people can make a lasting impression on us like that,” he said gently. He hadn’t experienced that kind of love himself until Jed came along but from the moment he had laid eyes on Jed that was it, the guy had captured his heart and it sounded like it was the same for Ethan with Toni. “The way this town seems to bring people together is incredible, I’m so happy you found each other again and that you figured out how you feel about each other.” It would have been such a shame if they had both remained in the dark, that was for sure. As Ethan explained about Elias and how he would have stayed and tried to make it work if he had known about him, Ben shook his head. “You shouldn’t beat yourself up over that,” he said gently. “You didn’t know she was pregnant and even if you had then you shouldn’t have felt like you had to make it work with her. That relationship wasn’t right for you and you found each other in the end, that’s what matters,” he said, hoping that Ethan would heed his advice and not blame himself for what had happened with Elias. “I can’t believe that’s how you found out you’re his dad.” It really did sound like a made up story but he could see that Ethan meant it so he was certain that it was the truth. Taking another sip of his drink, Ben groaned as Ethan said he wanted to know everything. “I’m afraid I’ll have to stick to just giving you the highlights, mine is too long a story to tell you everything,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Ethan. “I should probably start by telling you that I’m around five thousand years old. I grew up believing my dad died fighting in a war but it turns out my mom lied to me. My father is actually an angel and after my mom died my best friend Ashur and his dad took me in. Eventually my friend and I got together but when I returned to our village Ashur was really sick. I took him to the mountain where the villagers would go to worship the gods and I prayed to my father to save him. He ignored me so I broke into Heaven and stole magic from the angels hoping I could use it to save Ashur. Unfortunately I was too late to help him so I gave the magic to the people in my village instead so they could help themselves. I didn’t count on them deciding to misuse it and that’s how a lot of supernaturals came to be,” he explained as he lifted his beer to his lips and took another sip. “My father decided to curse me for what I did and until recently every day since then I’ve been hunted and killed by supernaturals only to resurrect and go through it all again,” he continued, hoping that he wasn’t overloading Ethan by giving him too much information at once. “I drifted for a long time after that and didn’t let anyone get close to me until I met you and Toni. You were the first ones I let in and that’s what made losing you both so hard.” Ben knew that he could have stayed in touch with Toni after the war and he knew now that he should have done but he couldn’t go back and change that now, all he could do was make sure that he didn’t make that same mistake again. “Earlier this year I made my way to Mystic Falls and the girls’ friend Jed and his dad found me after I’d been killed by the latest monster. I’d started to resurrect so they took me back to the Salvatore School and decided to let me stay while they figured out a way to break my curse. It was love at first sight for me with Jed like it was for you with Toni and we’re together so now I’m here to stay as long as he does. Jed and the others found a way to stop the monsters from coming after me even though they haven’t found a way to break my curse completely just yet and that’s when my father decided to make reappear. He thinks all supernaturals need to be eradicated so we’re trying to find a way to stop him,” he shrugged, not sure whether the girls had filled Ethan and Toni in on what had happened with his father, Hope and Josie or not. “Things have definitely changed a lot since the war, huh?” he chuckled.
