He might have changed but the town hadn’t. Derek still felt that shiver of anticipation lifting the hair on his arms as he drove across Mystic Falls. Somewhere out there, in the shadows that shifted at the edges of his vision as dusk fell, the Dread Doctors were still working on their twisted experiments. He guessed with so many escaping their clutches, being turned back into what they had been instead of what they’d been made into, they needed to replenish their ranks, their forces, whatever the hell it really was that they were hell bent on doing.
Derek’s hands tightened on the wheel as he forced himself to focus on the road instead, knuckles pressing white against olive skin. They might have taken a half dozen steps towards finding them, but the why that was still shrouded in mystery. Maybe he shouldn’t have been trying to draw the curtain back anymore. It was like looking a gift horse in the mouth.
Pale green eyes flicked up to the sky as he pulled up at a set of lights and craned forward to glance up at the sky. The sky was darkening but the moon hadn’t made its appearance yet. In just a couple of days it would be full and the woods around the town would be filled with shifters of all sorts. Practically a smorgasbord for both the doctors and whoever it was still plucking names off of the hit list. He didn’t know if his own was still on there, or if severing his ties with Alix had left him free and clear.
As the light continued to burn red his gaze slid to the side, to the nest of warehouses that ran back from the road. His own apartment building bordered them on one side. Close enough to hers from what she’d told him for them to practically see each other. He’d avoided seeing, avoided looking since that truth had poured out hot and bitter on the floor of his apartment. She’d likely carried on trying to drag people away from the Dread Doctors, but that was an altruistic game he couldn’t play, not with a hunter who lied as easily as she breathed. It didn’t matter that she’d been torn up as much by this as he had, it was a chance he hadn’t been able to take when his life was still in tatters.
Thanks to Scott those pieces had slowly started to fuse. The last handful of full moons he’d been out there in the woods among them, the shift of his body feeling like he was coming home, even if that home was thousands of miles from here.
By the time he pulled away from the lights and into the lot outside the vet’s clinic, Derek’s grip had started to lighten on the wheel. He’d taken the first real step in getting his life back into a recognisable state, everything after that had to be easier, even if those shadows still hovered at the edges of it. The place seemed quiet, but the lights were still up, fifteen minutes still to go until closing time.
He pushed open the door, setting off the bell over it as he stepped inside. No customers waiting, no dogs erupting into a chorus of barks as he took a few slow steps in. It took a couple of minutes, but the office door opened and it was Scott stepping out instead of his red headed boss – definitely a twist on Deaton. ”Hey,” he rumbled lightly. Derek tipped his head towards the door. ”I figured it had to be coming up on closing time. Wondered if you wanted to head out tonight, check out the carnival?” There was something a little tight in his voice, a twitch to his eyes as he heard what must have been the boss moving around in there. Check out, like he was all about the fun it offered and not the watch for the Dread Doctors swooping into a crowd like that to look for new experiments.

Back in Beacon Hills things had always seemed so dull before he was bitten. Most of Scott’s time had been spent at school and when he wasn’t there he was trying to make it onto the lacrosse team or helping out at the animal clinic. Nothing exciting had ever seemed to happen and that was why the news that a body had been found in the woods had been something that they’d had to check out. Scott’s life had changed forever that day and things hadn’t been the same since then. He’d found himself thrown into the supernatural world and without the help of Stiles and Derek, Scott knew that he wouldn’t have made it this far. They had stood by him and helped him when they could have turned their backs on him and from there their little group had grown. Lydia and Allison had joined them and from there others as well and now Scott knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. While he was growing up it had been just him and his mom after his dad left, he’d had Stiles who had been like a brother to him for as long as he could remember but now his pack was his family and Scott knew that he would do whatever it took in order to keep all of them safe. Mystic Falls was just like Beacon Hills in that it seemed to draw the supernatural to it and there often seemed to be a new threat on the horizon. Scott knew that they were stronger when they were together and they always tackled everything that was thrown their way as a group but Scott was the Alpha so he felt responsible for the others and he was pretty sure that that wasn’t going to change. That day Scott had been working at the animal clinic and it had ended up being a pretty busy day. He hadn’t known what he was going to do for work when he left Beacon Hills but thankfully Rhiannon had taken a chance on him the same way that Deaton had and Scott was always going to be grateful to her for that. Scott knew now more than ever that what he wanted to do with his life was become a vet and help animals and he was glad that he was being given the chance. It seemed a pretty fitting career all things considered, he was able to calm animals using his Alpha abilities and he was able to take away their pain when they needed it as well. Scott had always wanted to help in his own way and he knew that he had found the right way of doing that. It was about time to close up for the evening and Scott made his way out of the office as the bell sounded, surprised to see Derek making his way towards him. “Hey, is everything okay?” he asked, knowing that there had to be something going on to prompt a visit from Derek. “You want to check out a carnival?” he asked, raising an eyebrow as he looked over at Derek. “This is a Dread Doctors thing, isn’t it?” he added as he made sure to keep his voice low, knowing that that was what Derek was mostly focused on these days and to be honest Scott couldn’t blame him. “Have you heard something?”DEREK HALE

Kate hadn’t just burned the Hale house to the ground, hadn’t destroyed his family, it was as though she’d burned him too. A dead shell around a boy who hadn’t been there to choke to death with the rest of them, to feel the kiss of flames against his skin, burning with more ferocity than the guilt that would eat him up from the inside out afterwards. Death would’ve been a mercy then, an easy way out that Laura hadn’t let him take. Peter hadn’t been so lucky, caught in that agonising no man’s land between life and death, clawing his way back one thread of sanity at a time. Caught in the Dread Doctors web, wrapped in the bonds of whatever they’d turned him into, Derek wondered whether fate had just decided to give him a taste of what his uncle had suffered through – as though any of his crimes was on a level with Peter’s.
The bite had changed it all again, the nerves that had started to regrow before his world had crumbled again bursting back into life beneath his skin. No apathetic numbness clinging to the darkest recesses of his mind, regrets perhaps, thick as cobwebs in the corners, ready to cling at the slightest exploration of them. Like an alcoholic he’d made amends with some – those who would allow it – others he still had to reach out to, if it wasn’t too late. Alix included. There was time for that now though, opportunities he’d not expected to have returned to him with who he had been before those first flames had taken hold in his life.
Working his way towards the clinic, Derek tried to mentally brush those cobwebs away, fighting back the sense that there was something more he could’ve been doing to shut down the nightmares here the way he’d failed to in Beacon Hills. It was a double edged sword, one that Derek suspected Scott wouldn’t mind being nicked by if it meant that the pack would be safe from the things nibbling away at their supernatural world one experiment at a time. The pack was everything, too many things already taking their ounce of flesh.
It left that itch between his shoulder blades, had his shoulders hunching beneath his jacket despite the light tone that was in his voice when Scott finally walked out of the clinic to find him waiting there. No matter how much he glossed over his unease, Scott saw right through it. One word, that was all he’d managed before he’d jammed his thumb on the possible sore point. Derek made a low sound in his throat, dipping his head like he could ward off the worry. ”It’s all good,” he promised, although there was a little white lie to it. One that Scott apparently saw right through.
Derek straightened up, letting a sigh out as he slipped his hands into the pockets of his jeans. His gaze drifted back past Scott towards the clinic, as though Scott’s boss would walk right out into the middle of this. ”Nothing concrete, but they’re still here. Burying our heads in the sand isn’t gonna make them vanish.” Lips pursing, his expression settling back into those same grim lines, Derek looked back at Scott. ”People are still going missing, turning up different. If you were them wouldn’t you find the carnival the perfect hunting ground? Teenagers everywhere, nobody’s gonna notice if someone disappears in the crowd. Maybe we don’t find anything, but it felt wrong to just sit around waiting for it to happen.” He imagined Scott was gonna have the same trouble he did just sitting around twiddling his thumbs, although he had a lot less time in his day to do it. Some of them didn’t have to really work for a living, they didn’t have college as a distraction, just time to sit and brood.

Scott had always known that the bite could do amazing things, it had cured his asthma and he had been able to use it in order to save Liam and stop the nogitsune but he hadn’t known that it could be used to turn those who had been experimented on by the Dread Doctors into werewolves until he had tried. Hayden had been the first, she had almost died after being targeted because her name had ended up on the hit list and the same thing had happened to Jasper. He had hoped that there was at least a chance for them since they had both still been part werewolf but he hadn’t known whether the same would be true for Derek. He had been turned into a shapeshifter and that had meant that he could literally turn into someone new at any moment. Scott had hoped that the bite would take because he had known how desperately his friend had wanted to become a werewolf again and not a day went by when he wasn’t glad that it had done. Now Derek was back to how he was meant to be, to how he was born, and Scott knew that that was how it should be. Something in Derek was still different because of what the Dread Doctors had done to him but Scott knew that he couldn’t expect the guy to go back to the person that he used to be after something like that. He had been through something awful and that could never be taken away from him, he could only find a way to learn to live with it. Unfortunately right now that seemed to involve spending every waking moment trying to track down the Dread Doctors. Derek was stubborn, that was something that Scott had learned a long time ago, but if he was honest he couldn’t blame him for wanting to make sure that no one else went through the same thing. The Derek he was seeing now was so similar to the one that had helped him out after he was bitten by Peter and Scott knew that that Derek was a good guy to have around. Scott had grown used to one of his friend being there to meet him whenever he finished work back when Klaus had been gathering werewolves to turn into hybrids but that threat had long passed so finding Derek there waiting for him was definitely a surprise to say the least. The fact that Derek had sought him out after work was enough to instantly put Scott on the alert and he didn’t buy it one bit as Derek said that it was all good. There was clearly something up with his friend and he knew that he wanted to get to the bottom of it. “You’re right, it isn’t,” Scott agreed. Others in the pack had been affected by the Dread Doctors too but Derek seemed to be the one who was taking it the hardest and Scott wouldn’t be surprised if it was because he was so used to being in control of everything. As Derek spoke again, Scott’s expression softened. “You don’t need to try so hard to convince me, I can see how much this means to you so I’m in,” Scott assured him. “Besides this doesn’t just affect our pack and our other friends in Mystic Falls, it affects everyone.” Scott knew that Matt and some of the others in town had been experimented on by the Dread Doctors as well so it was about time that they were stopped. “Come on, let’s go,” he said as he clapped Derek on the back. “Do you mind driving?” he asked, knowing that it would be better than them both trying to fit on the back of his moped. In a way the Dread Doctors were no different to the nogitsune – they both liked to hide in the shadows, only emerging to take great joy in toying with the people around them. They left pain and destruction in their wake, making sure that anybody who managed to survive contact with them were never the same again. Thanks to the sacrifices everybody had made – including Allison’s life – the nogitsune had been defeated, trapped where nobody would fall pray to it again. Derek doubted they’d manage to take the Dread Doctors down the same way given that they hadn’t manage to track down any of them yet, but he’d take chasing them out of town. It meant they’d be free to start over somewhere else, hurting other people, but it would be a start and right now he’d take that. Just spotting the first breadcrumb in the trail they had to be leaving felt impossible, although if there was anywhere they might be at work tonight, it was the Carnival.
They’d had them in Beacon Hills from time to time when he’d been a kid. Lights flashing in the air, his head spinning as he’d scrambled onto the rides with Laura and Cora. They’d shrieked as they’d been thrown around in the air, dragging home the cheap stuffed toys from the games that the werewolves in the family would decimate with their heightened senses. Derek supposed either he or Scott could do the same tonight, but it wasn’t his main goal into heading to the square. Making that clear to Scott had drained away the smile that’d been there when Scott had stepped out of the clinic. ”I wish I wasn’t,” Derek admitted on a sigh. ”It’d be nice for something to just vanish all by itself for once.” Taking the damage they’d done with them. There were plenty of people in town who’d breathe a sigh of relief if it happened, not that any of them seemed to have the luck to make that sort of thing just happen.
Scott hadn’t interrupted him to argue against heading to the carnival on a wild goose chase. Derek eyed him as he trailed off, waiting for the ’I don’t think it’s a good idea’. As an Alpha he’d had to work his ass off to get Scott to trust his judgment – and had realised afterwards just how skewed that judgment had actually been. He let out a long breath as Scott caved almost immediately. The corners of Derek’s lips twitched. ”I had a whole speed planned if that didn’t work,” he admitted, glad he wouldn’t have to pull one out of thin air now. ”Stiles is probably already there, harassing every carnie he can find.” Getting himself in over his head as usual, but every now and then Stiles managed to pull off the sort of miracle they needed. Straightening up as Scott clapped him on the shoulder, Derek snorted. One dark brow rose, his gaze skimming over the parking lot next the clinic. ”You brought the bike? Yeah, sure. I’ll drive, I’m not riding on the back of that thing.” He wasn’t Stiles, who’d probably have squawked like a chicken at the idea that his Jeep wouldn’t get them that far.
Derek climbed back into the driver’s seat and waited for Scott to get in on the other side before he pulled out. At least it’d only be a short drive over to the square. The lights were already visible in the distance, a kaleidoscope of colour across the darkening sky. ”Are any of the others gonna be there tonight?” If they were their paths would probably cross and it would end up some sort of Scooby-doo like hunt for the bad guys – and it wouldn’t be for the first time. Without Stiles’’ dad being sheriff back in Beacon Hills those public spectacles would’ve been a far bigger problem.

The move to Mystic Falls had been so that he and the others could free Allison from the demon that had been possessing them but there were times when Scott found himself wondering whether he and the others would have been drawn there sooner or later anyway. It wasn’t a coincidence that the town attracted supernaturals to it just like Beacon Hills did, there was always something going on and so many people from Beacon Hills had been taken by the Dread Doctors and brought to Mystic Falls anyway. Having friends outside the pack helped as they knew the town better than Scott and the others did but when it mattered they all worked together and he knew that that was as it should be. He had felt guilty about leaving Beacon Hills at first but Mystic Falls was home now even with everything that was going on there and he and his friends were doing the best they could to make it a better place. Of course they all had their own lives to lead as well but they had learned to juggle everything a long time ago and something told him that they were going to have to continue doing so. It seemed like one thing after another went on in Mystic Falls and even when things seemed to settle down it was like they were all waiting for the next shoe to drop. Right now they were all trying to find a way to break the curse that had been placed on Danny but there were other things going on as well. Scott had spent time with Erica after she came back and helped her adjust and he still checked in with her when he could and then there was Derek. He was still fixated on the Dread Doctors and Scott really couldn’t blame him after everything they had put him through but he would be lying if he said he wasn’t worried about what might happen if Derek pissed them off and they decided to experiment on him again. Scott’s bite had turned him back into a werewolf the first time but there were some things that the bite couldn’t cure and Scott knew that he wanted to keep an eye on his friend and make sure that he didn’t find himself in any real trouble. “It would but when has our luck ever been that good?” Scott asked, raising an eyebrow as he looked over at Derek. Nothing they’d come up against had gone away on its own and Scott knew that wasn’t going to change now. The Dread Doctors were still out there somewhere and Scott knew Derek well enough to know that he wasn’t going to stop until he found them. Derek wasn’t like him, he was born into a long line of werewolves so it had always been a case of when he would shift rather than if it would happen. He didn’t know what it was like to be anything else and the Dread Doctors had taken that away from him for a long time. It was honestly a good thing that the bite had worked because Scott had seen how difficult it was for his friend and that wasn’t going to go away any time soon. Going to a carnival had always been an excuse to have fun in the past but this time was different. In any other instance he probably would have laughed at the idea of Derek suggesting that was where they go but Scott could see how much this meant to Derek. He hadn’t joined Derek’s pack while he was an Alpha because he had known that something was off with Derek’s judgement back then but Derek was a part of his pack now and Scott trusted him so if this was something that Derek needed to do then Scott knew that he was going to be there with him. “Now that I have to hear. Let’s go back and pretend I argued that it was a bad idea,” he chuckled. In reality it probably was but they were stronger together and Scott knew that Derek was stubborn so if he hadn’t agreed to go then Derek would have only gone on his own anyway. Honestly, the old Derek probably would have gone on his own so the fact that he had reached out instead really did show just how much had changed. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you’re right. Hopefully Lydia is there calming him down before he gets himself into too much trouble,” he grinned. As Derek said he wasn’t riding on the back of his bike, Scott pretended to be wounded just like Stiles had done so many times whenever anyone insulted Roscoe. “There’s nothing wrong with the bike! Not all of us can afford a car,” he said, rolling his eyes even though there was no malice in his words. The bike got him where he needed to go and it was cheap to run. He worked at the clinic but a lot of his money went towards school supplies and helping his mom out with bills so the bike was the best he could manage. Truth be told he had known Derek wouldn’t want to ride on the back of the bike anyway so that was why he had suggested that his friend drive instead. Making his way over to the car, Scott climbed into the passenger’s side and kept his eyes on the road until Derek asked if any of the others were going to be there tonight. “Hayden said she might try and talk Liam into heading over with her and Danny said he and Riley might check it out. Matt and Ben will definitely be there if we need to cover a wider area,” he shrugged. “No Erica tonight?”DEREK HALE

”Never,” Derek said, his tone wry. Kate’s destruction of his family had just ended up the first step in an avalanche of crappy luck that didn’t show any signs of stopping. The Dread Doctors were just the latest in the long line of people looking to crush them. He might’ve tried for optimistic, thinking he’d be the last of those taken and changed, but they were still out there snatching people up. Scott was only gonna be able to save so many of them. They couldn’t go around biting them all to stop them from failing or falling under the sway of the things that had turned them. They couldn’t trust that they were gonna stop them either. He knew that Alix was out there still trying, but none of it was guaranteed. All he could do was keep trying to and if they ended up with any good luck, maybe they’d stop them eventually. Most other folks would be at the carnival looking for a good time tonight, not expecting that there would be something lurking in those crowds looking for targets. The thinking was probably bordering on paranoid, but it had nagged at him until he’d left the warehouse in search of someone to drag along with him. Derek’s lips finally curved into something approaching a smile as he shook his head. ”Let’s not, it’d just be undignified. Short version of it is, if we can do something to stop this stuff happening we should. I figured you of all people would understand that.” Scott’s determination to take care of his people had marked him out from all the other Alphas he’d ever known and had probably contributed to him ending up a True Alpha.
In his own way Stiles cared just as much, but he showed it in a far more irritating way. The kid wouldn’t know calm if it bit him on the ass and out of all of them he was the least likely to back down once a thought got in his head. Dark brows rose as Scott agreed with his thinking. ”You think she can hold him back once he puts his mind to something?” He’d threatened to tear his throat out and it still hadn’t worked. It was like Stiles had been born immune to the words no and don’t. If Stiles had been here he probably would’ve scrambled onto the back of Scott’s bike without a second thought, but there was no way he was perching behind Scott on it. ”I didn’t say there was,” he told him, holding his hands up between them. ”I just don’t do well as a passenger. Stiles can tell you that much.” Even half incapacitated by wolf’s bane he’d given Stiles hell when he’d been behind the wheel of the jeep, trying to get him away from the high school to save his life.
Out on the road, Derek was already turning his mind towards any help they might have at the carnival. He wasn’t looking to disturb all of their nights, but having others there if something did go down was going to help. He’d suspected that some of them would go, he would’ve done at their age. ”I think she might be working,” Derek admitted. ”I guess it’s a prime night for tips. A lot of people are gonna head for places like the Grill for dinner beforehand.” And the bars would probably do a lot of trade after. ”Has Hayden heard anything about them since she was … turned?” Alix had seemed to think that the Dread Doctors kept an eye on what their experiments were doing at least, but he’d never managed to find out if he had a tail on him. The last person to threaten him had been Alix herself and that was all thanks to her uncle and the Hit List.
