━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI COULD FINALLY SAY SHE WAS HAPPY. WELL, PIECING CHASE back together definitely put a dip in her mood (if it were to be organized into a line graph), but, overall, she was content━and that was saying a lot. She could train and hunt again with Dean, look after Dick, and be with the man she loved. Her sister’s and Nemo’s presence in Mystic Falls were another hiccup━the latter hadn’t been around since his first appearance, though, so Roxxi wasn’t too concerned. She’d strike him down whenever she saw him next━maybe literally, considering the electric shit was still harder to control than shifting.
She felt it while hanging off Chase’s shoulders at the Founder’s Day Party, swaying slowly to the music, head resting on his shoulder during a slow song. Everything was perfect. She’d escaped New Orleans and had ended up in Mystic Falls, but she still had a piece of it with her. Their shared histories still mattered━their lives were intertwined, tanged, and that could never be undone, but this felt right. Guilt no longer haunted her. She accepted her love for Chase and what that meant; he was hers to protect, to ensure no other Agnelli scum came after him or his family. He was hers, and she was his. She liked it that way.
Life was almost complete here. No Emiliano, no bullshit━just her, Chase, the perfect job and her best friend. Her dad would be proud; he’d love Chase, too━she’d just know it. What was there not to love about him? Roxxi turned her chin up and gave Chase a stupidly wide grin, considering it as she stared. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
She felt like an idiot━in a good way, though. Like a lovesick teenager. However, this time she’d hold him close and refuse to let anyone touch or alter him. He was just for her.
… And maybe for their kids, someday.
Grinning at the idea, Roxxi leaned in to press her lips to his, mumbling, “I’m going to get us drinks,” As she pulled away. They’d had some when they’d arrived, but Roxxi had downed one and left her cup… somewhere when they started dancing, so it was about time for another. Parting with another peck, she split from Chase and grabbed one edge of her red dress, trying to keep it out from underneath her heels. One leg, tanned from the summer sun, stuck out from beneath the long slit up one side━other than that, though, she thought it was pretty classy. And fuck these old, crotchety Founding Family fucks if they had a problem.
Finding her way through the crowd to the refreshments, Roxxi snagged a pig in a blanket, popped it in her mouth, and then kept going until she was at the bar. “Two rum and Cokes, please,” She grinned at the bartender, though the expression died when she realized who was slithering into her peripheral. The ‘bad feeling’ came hard and fast, pooling in the pit of her stomach and crawling up to Roxxi’s throat. Cazzo, she thought, Cazzocazzocazzo. Chase wasn’t far, and she instinctively glanced over her shoulder, trying to find him through the crowd. Quickly, her dark eyes darted back to her sister.
“Ho pensato che questo posto fosse meglio che far passare gli scarafaggi.” She hissed, “What are you doing here, Giorgia? Surely no one in Mystic Falls would be stupid enough to ask you on a date.” Was it Nemo? Was that rat here, too? Her eyes flicked over Giorgia’s shoulder, hunting for any sign of him. She itched to return to Chase, desperate to shield him from all this, but she didn’t want to alert Giorgia to his presence━if she didn’t already know.

In New Orleans it had always been on Patrick’s arm. The quarter’s legal darlings sweeping in through the door with the sort of pomp and circumstance only New Orleans could add to proceedings. The tinny sound of brass instruments overlying the higher, sweeter sound of strings. All smiles and charm, a gloss she’d enjoyed because it hadn’t been overlaid with the smear of filth Emiliano brought to everything. They were circles he’d never have access too, circles Giorgia knew she wouldn’t see Nemo in. The shards of her heart wouldn’t have been able to take it then, it would’ve been the crunch of expensive heels over them, grinding them in until she started to bleed anew.
God, she’d been blind. Fingers fixing the heavy silver chain around her throat an hour ago, Giorgia had studied herself in the mirror, trying to imagine herself free of that same filth now. How had Roxxi freed herself of it when it was practically stamped into their skin? A new town, a new job, the Buckleys?
Her gaze had shifted restlessly as she’d popped the cap off of her eye liner. Seeking out the window she left cracked open whenever she was home now, almost hoping to see that rangy form climbing back through it so they could make an escape of their own. There’d been no sign of Nemo though. Just that hollow in the centre of her.
There was no arm to wrap her own around as she’d swept out of a town car out front of the Founder’s Day party. Giorgia had stepped out onto the sidewalk, lifting her chin almost imperiously. Fingers wrapped around her clutch, the sweep of dark hair tossed back over her shoulders. The local DA making her first public appearance. All smiles as she’d strode up the stairs on those ice pick heels, dark eyes sweeping the crowd though. Mikey Buckley wouldn’t be caught dead here at least, not where folks would take one look at him and would be clutching their hands together a little tighter, hiding their riches from the criminal looking element in their midst.
Inside it was just like those events back home. A certain echelon, lead by the Founding Families, sweeping around the space. All silk and fur, gold and diamonds. Everything Emiliano wanted to be, somewhere she’d felt a hundred times more comfortable before she’d discovered just how far Emiliano had infiltrated it and her marriage.
She snagged a glass of champagne from a passing tray, using it as an excuse not to speak as she glided past little knots of folks obviously far more familiar with one another. Her boss would be here somewhere, the sheriff too, half a dozen others she’d probably been introduced to since she’d arrived. Giorgia swallowed, keeping an out for more familiar figures. She almost choked on her champagne when she found them and that kernel of dread and bitterness lodged itself in the pit of her stomach.
Oh, she’d known, from the moment she’d seen Chase with that Tupperware box of pasta on his desk, but she’d hoped her sister had made sense. Ovviamente no. Il pazzo. Always looking for a way to slip the knife between Emiliano’s ribs, never thinking how he would turn it around on her, because he could, because he hated the Buckleys in a way that would never let any of this rest. Cazzo!
Mikey hadn’t convinced his brother to leave after he’d been brought in. This was probably why, Roxxi an anchor that Chase wouldn’t cut free.
Jade eyes swept the crowd again as it started to reel around her, looking for some sign that Nemo had come, trailing after Chase like a tiger with a taste for human blood, for the Buckley’s blood. No sign, but her heart continued to rattle in the base of her throat all the same. It only steadied as she saw Roxxi peel herself away from him with a smile on her face. She left Chase to drift towards the edge of the floor, heading straight towards one of the bars. That red dress held in the clutch of one hand, looking good enough that Chase had probably swallowed his tongue at the sight of it – hopefully he’d choke and solve all of her problems here.
Giorgia didn’t bother doing the same. Her black dress swirled around her thighs as she walked, lean legs flashing with each parting of the fabric, a swagger to her hips as she drew near. The smile had frozen when she’d spotted the two of them but now it was back. ”Looks like you worked up a thirst,” she crooned as Roxxi’s own smile fell away, that glance over her shoulder proof that she thought poor Chase was in trouble here. If only she knew the truth.
Setting her bag down on the bar, Giorgia raised both hands, the picture of innocence. ”Don’t worry, he’s safe from me. Although if cockroaches are out, then I guess that would keep him out too, hmm?” There was a look from the bartender at that, but Giorgia ignored it. She wasn’t hiding those daggers in Italian, not unless the crowd grew Buckley shaped ears. ”Ah, so that’s how it works here. Couples only? No room for a new divorcee to find herself someone new? I guess I’m gonna be disappointed then.” Giorgia clucked her tongue, flicking her gaze up to the bartender. ”Make that three, thanks. You still haven’t told him? I take it you haven’t at least … last I heard he would’ve been glad to stomp on all of us, crush the Agnelli roaches for what they did. What do you think he’d do if he knew he was in love with one?” She might have been blind to the lack of it in Pat’s eyes but she knew what she’d seen on that boxer’s face.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ ROXXI WOULD CLAW HER OWN SISTER’S EYES OUT IF IT MEANT protecting Chase. She’d been through far too much with him now, and she trusted him more than she did Giorgia. That was funny, wasn’t it? Roxxi would die for her family, do absolutely anything for them, but not for the ones who turned their backs on her father. And he was hers. Giorgia had chosen Emiliano. She’d chosen this life, a hatred between sisters, and Roxxi spent too long being bitter about it.
She thought she was over it. At this point in her life, she figured she’d worked through it enough times to not have so much anger towards all of them, but perhaps Roxxi had merely buried her head in the sand and ignored it. She was free from them, so what was the use of letting them control her life any longer, correct?
Except for when they marched back into it and threatened everything she’d built here.
Roxxi had been terrified of this. She still was, but it was the entire reason she’d kept Chase at arm’s length at first. How long did she think she could parade around with him in this small town and not see her sister again? This was her fault. She was going to bring pain and injury to the man she loved, all because she was selfish.
Giorgia responded in English, just like an Agnelli would, forcing Roxxi’s lips to purse in irritation. She’d seen Chase, had seen Roxxi with Chase, and now she insulted him like her little sister wouldn’t hesitate to bash her head against the bar.
Keeping her eyes staring straight, off of Giorgia, Roxxi gathered her hands to where she leaned against the bar’s edge, balling them in fists. If she spoke, if she looked at her sister, Roxxi’s eyes would flash gold and she’d snap loud enough to have Chase looking over.
Chase. She thought of him, how he always flashed her those adorable, dopey smiles. His big brown eyes, the ones that were so dark and yet held so much light, so much hope, even for a peccatrice like her. He’d always been her anchor, but now, instead of just his actions, it was him. Memories of Chase holding her at night, wrapped together for safe keeping while they slept; his hand in hers wherever they went; his love, how it gave her so much warmth.
She couldn’t deny it as Giorgia put it in the open, though she tried. For what reason, Roxxi didn’t know━perhaps to put distance between them, as if that was possible at this point… as if it would save him.
Drawing in a slow breath, she could finally look at her sister again. Roxxi was glaring, but she wasn’t liable to shift━not at the moment, anyway. “I am not an Agnelli.” She hissed, shaking her head, “I chose to leave you pezzi di merda behind after what your family did to him. You chose to stay, you are as evil as the demons our father used to hunt.” Swallowing hard, Roxxi blinked away the tears that began to cloud her vision. She wanted to see every word and its recognition pass across Giorgia’s face━she wanted to see if her sister still cared.
Leaning in far too close for comfort, Roxxi grit her teeth together, near enough to present a challenge. Her sister was still a wolf, after all, and Roxxi’s own was still in her somewhere. “I hope he crushes every one of you; I’ll help him do it. It’s no wonder you couldn’t keep your husband━who would want to be married to a serpente?”
It didn’t matter that Giorgia claimed he wasn’t in danger from her. She meant just that, it wasn’t Giorgia who would hunt him, but the rest would when she passed along the message. Roxxi’s chest fluttered with fear, though she kept a hard expression trained on her sister. She wouldn’t let them touch Chase, not unless she was six feet under.

Should she have expected anything more from Roxxi? She had turned her back on her family, tarring them all with that same brush that was turned black from Emiliano, believing them all lost to the corruption that rolled from the man like the stink from a drain – even if he tried to cover it up with the most expensive colognes New Orleans had to offer, that veneer of respectability he’d never earned the way he should’ve. She hadn’t come back to face any of them when that invitation to her big sister’s wedding had hit her mail box. Oh, she should’ve know then that Roxxi was done, but when her heart had been broken for the second time, she’d hoped there was one set of arms she could turn to as she shattered inside.
Giorgia’s gums ached as she gritted her teeth against the wave of bitterness that rolled out of her sister just at the sight of her. Oh, not the press of fangs, she’d spent too many years keeping that side of her in check outside of the full moons – New Orleans was a city where the supernatural pressed right up against the human world, but it didn’t mean she had to sink into its depths – just the gritting of her teeth against lashing back out and being no better than Roxana believed her to be.
Her stomach twisted, but her fingers folded down into her palms as Giorgia dropped her hands. She would take the permanent loss of her sister if it meant that she’d driven Chase and Mikey from town, saving three lives, and her heart. Roxxi’s would likely be destroyed in the process, but her sister could do as she’d done before and go scurrying out of town, leaving her family behind again, for the last man on earth Emiliano would want touching one of his daughters.
Roxxi’s lips pursed, a painted sign of her irritation, drawing Giorgia’s up into a stiff smile. Not done though, Roxxi leaned back into the bar, her hands fisted like she would swing for her sister’s face. A fierce protector, not that Chase knew the half of it, or he was betting he didn’t. Detective Buckley hadn’t exactly spoken well of the family that had put his brother in jail. Did he know one of the Agnelli snakes was in his bed? No. Because Roxxi hadn’t claimed the name.
Snorting, Giorgia eased another half step towards her sister, definitely in eye raking range if Roxana chose to snap here – just the place for her cop boyfriend to have to take care of all that family drama. Roxxi looked like she was trying to hold it all in, taking a slow breath that likely did nothing for the heat of a temper only family could raise. ”I’d say the paperwork would argue that. We all took his name, even if we don’t want it following us around now.” Hadn’t she cast it off herself? District Attorney Giorgia Malloy had never claimed association with Emiliano Agnelli publicly, for good reason then and now. Giorgia leaned in another fraction of an inch, her lips curling sharply. ”Our family. You think it was as easy for all of us as it was for you? Brave Roxana, going it alone, leaving all the demons behind.” Including her own sisters. That sick feeling in the pit of Giorgia’s stomach intensified at the label though, the drop of colour from her skin hidden by the carefully applied make-up that lent her cheeks life.
The low lights in the room did nothing to hide her sister’s tears. The apology burned in her throat, but she would never speak it. Roxana might be hurt by thought of their father, but she had landed enough blows herself, raking at the tenderness of her sister’s heart with those claws she painted. They were right there in her face as Roxxi closed what remained of the gap between them, her teeth gritted just as tight as she swung for that sucker punch. Giorgia sucked in her breath as the blow landed, sharp enough to cut the ties that held back her own tears. They filled her eyes, what colour that remained beneath her blush and contour vanishing in an instant.
She could see the bartender shoving the three glasses onto the bar next to them, discrete enough to keep his mouth shut as the situation in front of them grew brittle enough to shatter like one of those glass Christmas tree baubles that had hung in the house every year. ”The sort of man who prefers il re serpente to his own wife,” Giorgia whispered hoarsely. ”I guess you would understand that sort of loyalty. Roxana can see everything and she doesn’t let anybody forget it. You have everything you want here, hmm? For now at least. What do you think is going to happen when Emiliano hears he’s in your bed? I’m going to be the least of your problems then. He doesn’t have a chance against, Emiliano. Neither one of you do.” The bitterness steeped every word. How long would it be before Nemo tried again? He had accused her of trying to stop him from getting his revenge, and he hadn’t been wrong.
Her fingers wanted to shake with the force of her sister’s blow, but Giorgia reached for her glass, flipping her hair back as she sipped from it. Emiliano wouldn’t hear the news from her. Even if her sister had turned against her, she would not do that, would not see Roxxi destroyed as she had been, or Nemo killed in a crossfire Chase would surely initiate. ”He looks like he’s recovering well…” Those cold eyes fixed on the brief glimpse of Chase she got through the crowd. Oh, that story had gotten around quickly enough, and she’d seen Nemo fingerprints all over it, ones she would have frantically erased if it had been within her power.

━ i don't know where i'm going, but i sure know where i've been ━ DON’T WANT IT FOLLOWING US AROUND? SINCE FUCKING WHEN? Roxxi would’ve assumed that didn’t include Giorgia, but the way she said it made the younger Braschi think otherwise. She wouldn’t go picking through possible meanings, though, because it wasn’t worth it━not when it would be so easy for Giorgia to want to wrap her up like this. Have Roxxi swimming her own head, wondering if there could be a chance that one of her sisters was on the right side.
It didn’t matter. Giorgia made her choice, and her life didn’t affect Roxxi’s now━so long as she stayed far from Chase.
“Easy?” Roxxi scoffed, “It was easy to make the decision, to stay true to who we are and were raised as, but that was the only easy part. It was not easy working my ass off in school to leave sooner, and to stay separated, meanwhile he tried to drag me back every step of the way.” Her eyes narrowed, but she looked away quickly, trying to avoid Giorgia seeing how emotional she became. “It wasn’t easy leaving the only family I had left, my mother and my sisters, but you left me no choice. I stayed loyal to our father and our faith, and I will never regret that.” But it hurt every step of the way. Roxxi thought she was over it now, and yet, Giorgia proved otherwise.
Angered by the emotion drumming up inside her, she went for the throat (figuratively… for now), attacking Giorgia’s failed marriage. She was close again, having pushed the threatened onslaught of tears away, though she was surprised to see them pass to Giorgia.
Roxxi wanted to upset her. She wanted to pluck the knife from her back and drive it into Giorgia’s heart, but she wasn’t prepared for how it might feel to see it take effect. Would she apologize? Neanche per idea. No fucking way.
One brow raised at the explanation. So it wasn’t Giorgia, not really━Emiliano had ruined her love, too. Both of them, actually, so her warnings made more sense now. Perhaps she wasn’t doing this just for him, but instead seeing history repeat itself in her younger sister and a man Emiliano wouldn’t approve of. Roxxi could sympathize with that; the first boy she’d ever fallen for had been taken and transformed by Emiliano, and supposedly he’d gotten more sly over the years.
She didn’t acknowledge the bartender, but she knew he was there, and continued in Italian, “Molto tempo fa ho fatto una promessa a Dio, ea mio padre, che l'avrei ucciso. Mandalo all'inferno a cui appartiene.” Roxxi would be lying if she said she wasn’t afraid of Emiliano, but she knew she was on the right side, and that was enough for her. He wasn’t a demon, but he deserved to occupy the same space as them for his crimes.
Slowly, she began to settle. The anger and heat was directed at Emiliano━il re serpente, as Giorgia called him━where it rightfully should’ve been. Giorgia didn’t have her full trust (she likely never would again), but this clearly wasn’t up to her. They were all pawns in his game━even she and Chase. He would soon learn, however, that he couldn’t control either of them.
Roxxi could’ve apologized for Emiliano’s interference in Giorgia’s marriage, but she wasn’t about to hand out sacred words to someone who didn’t appreciate nor deserve them. Just because she was softened by her sister did not mean she’d bend so easily.
And then... Giorgia had to ruin it.
Her next words sounded like a threat. She even did so much as to look at Chase through the crowd, leaving Roxxi to glance in his direction before stepping forward. Reaching around, she grabbed a fistful of Giorgia’s hair and pulled, twisted, then tugged her in. “You and Emiliano’s well-trained pet won’t go near him again, capisce?” She lowered her voice, practically growling, “I was scrubbing the taste of Nemo’s blood from my mouth all night, but I’ll rip his throat out if I see him around Chase. He got lucky. It won’t happen again.” Pulling her fingers from Giorgia’s ratty hair, Roxxi snapped at the lurking bartender. “We’re fine. Fuck off.”
She set the same palm on her sister’s chest. It was ballsy and dangerous to do it here, but Giorgia would heal.
Roxxi sent a jolt into her. Smaller than she should’ve, not enough to produce visible crackles on their skin, but far more than sticking a fork in a toaster. “I’ll cook both of you like pollo al girarrosto.” She smirked, slowly peeling her hand away, though she didn’t feel any better for it.

That thing that had killed their father hadn’t just taken a life that day. It had twisted more than a dozen others, opening them up to the poison that had dripped from Emiliano from the very moment he’d been born. The wrong one, infected their lives with all of that darkness, even if they tried to pretend they were blind to it. Or that they had escaped it.
States away didn’t matter, a 14 hour drive nothing to a man like that. It had been far enough for Roxxi to believe that none of them had existed though. She’d felt the tug of that cord so many times since Roxxi had turned her back, but Giorgia knew now that her sister had chewed through it, picking a Buckley over them. What was it they said? The enemy of my enemy is my friend? In Roxxi’s case it was more her lover, but the sentiment stood. Her sister had made her choice and had left her sister there to sink neck deep into that poison – until she’d realised that it had drowned her when she hadn’t noticed.
Giorgia could taste it on her tongue as Roxxi scoffed at her. Swallowed it back with difficulty. Where the fuck was her drink? If she couldn’t wash the ache in her throat away with it then at least it would be a short, sharp shock for her sister, shaking her from that holier than thou attitude. ”Easier for smart little Roxxi to get all the good grades. He didn’t manage it though, did he? Quello che è scappato.” It wasn’t as though Emiliano hadn’t known where she was, using their the Braschi name wasn’t much of a disguise. Unlike Malloy. She wanted to tear it from her skin, to get rid of his last claim on her. ”I left you no choice? You wouldn’t even acknowledge that I’d had to make one.” The wrong one. Maybe Roxxi would’ve seen that, seeing through Pat’s charm in an instant, and saved her years of humiliation.
Roxxi had her perfect little life here, one that was sullied now that her sister had come calling. Maybe she had been able to convince herself that she was free for good, free to crawl into Buckley’s bed and live out all those fairy tales. She was a fool, just like her big sister – trusting that her heart wasn’t going to be crushed here. Her arms would be open when it all fell apart – unlike Roxxi’s.
Dio, she wanted this done. Wanted to stop feeling as though she would fall apart from a broken heart she shouldn’t have been suffering from – not with those long fingers holding it together again. The sob caught in her chest on the jagged shards of her heart and it took everything in her not to suck in a breath.
Her sister’s brow rose, not a fucking word of apology – but why bother when what you wanted to do was cut them all down. The breath that she had not allowed herself shuddered out on a laugh as Roxxi continued on, slipping in to Italian like she was all about discretion now. ”Then do it,” Giorgia hissed. ”Facci un favore a entrambi e smettila di minacciarlo. Buttalo fuori. Uccidilo.” She would have lied if she’d said there was no plea to her voice. They both knew that Emiliano wouldn’t go down as easily as that. He had too much still to play with in this town, like a cat that would torture the mouse til the very last second before it crunched the tiny beast’s bones.
Fingers could’ve tightened, gripping the scarlet cling of Roxxi’s dress as she shook her, trying to convince her to end this for good, but Giorgia picked her glass up instead. There was no relief or soothing from the bite of the alcohol, just as an excuse to wash away the taste in her mouth. It should’ve stayed at that, her warning enough, but the ache inside from the rake of Roxxi’s claws was too much. She had to push away, as viciously as possible – for Roxxi’s own good.
Green eyes, still gleaming like jade with the sheen of tears, settled on Chase. His scars had faded, hidden on a face that looked like it had taken every blow Emiliano had ever aimed at him. Maybe he could take a few more, but one day something would give and then Roxxi would know what it was like to lose everything. ”Cagna!” The yank stung, even if her scalp fought to heal the damage immediately as hair was pulled from the roots. ”You … you hurt him. It wasn’t enough that he already did. You had to do it too? Touch him again and it won’t be Emiliano this time.” The tears broke over her lashes, the sudden bite of hatred towards her sister coming and going like a thunder bolt.
They weren’t fine. Why couldn’t she see it? Emiliano wouldn’t let them be, Nemo wouldn’t let them be while he hurt, tortured by his reflection every time he looked, seeing only what she saw right past. Roxxi’s hand settled on her chest, just enough time passing for Giorgia to look down and see it there before that thunder bolt was hitting again. It stopped her heart in her chest for just a moment, her mouth opening in a shocked O before its ragged beat kicked back in and she stumbled back, shaking from…
Giorgia stared at her sister, stunned, confused, hurting. She blinked the tears away, clearing her view of a sister she had known so well, or thought she had. What had happened to her since she had left them? What had clawed at her until she was different on the inside. ”Better us than him, hmm? Use that brain of yours. Get them both out of here before someone snaps. Don’t let him get what he wants.” Don’t hurt him. Giorgia shook her head at her sister, the smirk salt ground into that wound that was still open inside of her. She turned, pushing through the crowd, trying to gather the shattered pieces of herself back together. Put on a mask, don’t let them see the hurt. It had worked with Emiliano, Roxxi before too, although maybe her sister had only ever seen what she had wanted to.
