❝ The Lone Wolf Dies But The Pack Survives.❞
Being in this town was bringing with it new experiences every day. One of those had been a completely bizarre shopping trip with Harmony. Bridges had started to be built between the two, but it was ways to go before Aliz would trust her completely. Once she would trust her brother’s judgement, but she thought it was a bit impaired when it came to the beautiful blonde. Needless to say, after that trip her wardrobe was certainly better off. Her best clothes no longer sported holes.
The other experience this town was offering was a carnival. In town for a whole week. Rides and games and other sweet treats that Aliz could only guess would rot teeth by simply looking at them. Either way she wanted to check it out. In the weeks following her arrival in Mystic Falls she had been spending a lot of time on her own or with her brother Alex. She had been doing her best to avoid Viktor.
He didn’t care if he decided to look for her here. There was plenty of places she could use to avoid him if she needed to. Falling in step next to some humans as they walked around the field. Lights and music bombarded her senses. Much like the club had done in Canada. Taking a look around first before realizing the use of the rides were free. The games cost money but not much. At least at Aliz’s understanding of this country’s currency, a few dollars didn’t break the bank. Though she regrettably didn’t have much in the way of cash to just throw at these games.
Joining a queue for the large wheel with carriages. Looked like a nice one to test the waters. Eventually after fifteen minutes of waiting it was her turn. Taking her seat on the inner side of the carriage she was told to apply her belt and she grudgingly did so just as her brother snuck in next to her. The ride attendant gave him a filthy look before applying the safety bar and sent the carriage moving before she could even protest, ” Szuper” Just great Aliz muttered as she deliberately looked away from him determined to enjoy the ride and the view, wasn’t going to allow him to ruin it as the carriage ascended higher.

Why was it that the only woman in his life without cloth ears was Eniko? She had been happy to wait til later, when maybe they could all go to the carnival together – safety in numbers, yes? – Alex would’ve done anything he’d asked, and Harmony, oh, she would’ve argued him down if he’d suggested it to her, pushing his buttons until he caved and they’d gone as soon as she wanted anyway. At least he’d have had some control then. Aliz though ….
The quiet click of the door next door, the one his sisters shared – Alex being on the other side, all three close enough now – would’ve gone unnoticed if he hadn’t been in the room alone. Setting aside the tattered book he’d found in the motel office. Text big enough even a child could have read it, although the man and woman on the front cover certainly weren’t posed in what he would call child friendly positions. The woman manning the desk there had grinned at him, sending the heat rushing up his face, but the moment she’d turned her back he’d taken it with him anyway. Viktor flipped the edge of the covers over it, brows furrowing as he crept towards the windows. That blush would be the least of it if Harmony found it. Those scenes, the ones he’d been able to pick apart with what English he knew, they would have her cackling. While he cursed.
Aliz. Scurrying away like hunching her shoulders would hide her from her family. Soha nem hallgat. Mindig úgy csinálja, ahogy akarta. Soha nem használja a neki adott értelmet arra, hogy kétszer is meggondolja a dolgot. When he caught her he would shake her until her teeth rattled and maybe some crumb of common sense would break free and roll around in her empty head like a marble.
He considered thumping a fist next door to see if Eniko was there, or Alex on the other side, but if they were they either would’ve been with her or talking her out of it … since the two of them and their cousin were the only ones she would talk to now. And Harmony. Scowling, Viktor crammed his feet into his boots, grabbed his wallet – thin as it was given that he hadn’t risked getting a job here in town – and headed for the door. Somehow Harmony and his sister had ended up shopping together, an arrangement that had maybe taken some of the sting out of the thorny words Aliz would try and throw her way after the pregnancy that hadn’t been, but probably not much. He had left them behind and instead of rushing back, had partnered up with a pretty woman they neither knew or trusted not to have somehow messed with his head and convinced him not to go back to his family.
Hülyeség.
Hands shoved deep in his pockets, Viktor trailed his sister across town to the carnival. He kept his distance as they walked, knowing she would be able to sense him almost as easily as he could her. At the edge of the crowds he lost her for a moment, the lights and sounds swallowing her up. There was a breathless moment as a crowd of teenaged boys knotted together, crowing, shoving, shooting him sour looks as he shoved through the middle of them. Aliz wasn’t there. She moved through the crowds like an eel, small enough to wriggle through all those tight spaces. Small enough that he almost missed her in the queue at one of the rides.
He'd rushed past without seeing her, then on the way back had seen her. Luckily a constantly moving stream of people had divided the two of them. A shield for him, something she’d probably thought would give her cover, freedom. In the time he’d been searching his way down the length of the carnival she’d reached the front of the queue. Viktor grabbed the top of the metal railings used to form the queue and leapt over the top. ”Sister,” he explained to the man guiding people in. ”Sorry.” The accent was laid on thick enough that maybe the words were barely understandable. Just a rude European, no need for a fight.
Giving Aliz no room to escape, he slipped into the carriage next to her. His fingers were already applying the belt, pulling his tight before he reached over to check hers. The man gave him a look but Viktor just shot his sister a grin and stretched his arm across the back of the cart. ”Not happy to see me, sister? Hetek óta bujkál előlem.” And would have kept on hiding until either he’d pushed it or her temper had finally faded enough to allow him to explain again.

❝ The Lone Wolf Dies But The Pack Survives.❞
Just great she thought to herself. She had come here to have a little bit of fun. Away from her family. Viktor had said they would go to this carnival, as a family a pack. To be perfectly honest she wasn’t feeling it lately. She wanted to go out alone, enjoy it on her own. She would have gone with Alex, but he hadn’t been in at the time to ask. Plus… he wouldn’t want to go against Viktor, best not to put him in the situation where he would have to choose.
When Viktor offered sister as a means of explanation for jumping the queue with an apology soon after. She almost wanted to shout out in fear of stranger danger but in the end didn’t. She almost smiled at the thought, been funny to explain that away. The amusement flickered across her face before fading quickly.
When he put on his own belt and reached over to check hers, she with quick efficiency slapped his hand away, ” I know how to put on a safety belt, brother.” She snapped at him, her dark eyes glaring at him before turning away from him once again. She caught the stink eye the attendant at the ride was giving him, it cheered her up to see it.
Soon the ride was moving and there was no way they were getting off. Unless she was willing to jump and break a few bones… which was more painful that he was worth. So, Aliz would suffer through this ride. Then put distance between them when it was over, ” I was happy to see you. That faded quickly…” Aliz pointed out. That was weeks ago, the night they had returned she had been over the moon to see him. A sentiment that clearly hadn’t been returned. All he had cared about was that she was there, that she hadn’t listened to him… A point she was driving home by taking any chance she could to not listen to him.

Subtlety didn’t seem to be a trait that ran in the Kovacs blood. Some would have said it was the gypsy in them, but that was no real excuse. Passionate emotions weren’t restricted to the Romani. Or to being a werewolf. It was merely them and none of them were at all subtle when they felt something. Alex’s sweetness poured out like a cloud - innocent like a small child, despite everything that happened - Eniko was quieter, but you pushed and she stood up just as fierce. He wasn’t abought to bring himself up, not even in his own head. He was nothing compared to Aliz.
He could have waited for her to return from the carnival and let the fireworks explode in the motel, but that would likely have meant Harmony, Alex, Eniko and Tazi all wading into it. Aliz was pissed at him, not them, his wsa the only head she had to butt. Oh, and she was trying to already.
Viktor scowled as he caught Aliz smiling at his appearance. He was sure she’d be more angry than anything. Brushing the carnival worker aside with an excuse he must have heard a thousand times before, he cut the front of the queue. If it had been anywhere but this painfully polite little town there would’ve been a fight. Tempers and fists flying. The worst he got was a dirty look from the teenager at the front of the queue, as though they would have joined his sister in the cart anyway. Blue eyes narrowed at him for a second, like there was a real possibility to it.
Sliding closer, Viktor grabbed for her belt, the frown giving way to that bright grin he knew would tick Aliz off - it likely would’ve done even before he’d left them behind to … to be seduced by Harmony. As though he had stopped thinking about them for a moment and had no intention of getting back to them. Soha! Never. Ruddy brows hitched, the snort rolling out of him as he shoved Aliz’s hand away to tug at her belt again, hopefully leaving it uncomfortable. ”Really? Yet always the hard way.” Both of them rushing into things without a second thought - his head proving harder than hers though. Remembering the way she had flopped lifeless as a doll when they had pulled him from the water that day, Viktor sucked a breath into a suddenly tight chest.
Flopping back into his seat, Viktor turned his back on the attendant, hunching his shoulders beneath the cover of his jacket. What was the man going to do? Try and drag hm out of there? No, no chance of that, which meant that Aliz was trapped with him for as long as the ride ran. Cursing under his breath, Viktor dragged his other hand over his face, muttering into his palm. ”Until you saw her, yes? Harmony the enemy, the one making me forget you, all of you?” As though Harmony had the power to do it. She could drive him crazy, she could have the itch and heat under his skin growing until he had to get his hands on her to ease it, she could break his heart when she let those softer parts of herself out - the parts Aliz hadn’t seen.
His jaw went tight as the ride started to roll. Slowly at first, the little carriage beneath them chugging into life. He could have had it purring in hours, but that wasn’t his job here - keeping his family safe was. ”Ostobaság. Az egészet. No steal. We protect each other, look together. Why you not see?” Because Harmony didn’t make it easy. He would protect her at almost any cost, but Viktor knew the games Harmony liked to play, especially when that softer part of her was at threat of being revealed. Cut them first and they could not come at you to do the same.

❝ The Lone Wolf Dies But The Pack Survives.❞
Why couldn’t she just have one night. She went out on her own to be on her own. For a few hours where she didn’t have to deal with Viktor or Harmony… or the whole shit show that had been created when she had arrived in town. She knew somewhere in the back of her mind she was being petulant… thought she wasn’t ready to forgive her brother.
Seeing him join her in the cart, she was seconds from getting out of the carriage. Though the ride had already started moving. When he reached for her safety belt she slapped his hands away, only to have him reach for it again and pull it tighter than she would of wanted. That petulance and stubbornness creeped to the surface again and she reached down to her belt and with her strength snapped the fabric, ” Don’t expect anything less from me…” Aliz warned. She lived to do things the hard way.
Looking away from him again she watched the ride traverse slowly. Lifting them higher until she had a beautiful view of the town of Mystic Falls. The lights from the town’s buildings, the lampposts lighting the streets below. She would have been enjoying it more if she was on her own. Ignoring her brother as best as she could. What hurt more was how he had shoved her away in favour of Harmony, ” No. Nothing to do with her. This is about you and your broken promises.” Aliz told him without looking at him.
He had been meant to be looking for a home for them. Somewhere they could be a family again. Three years they had waited, without a word. Had they stayed they would of all been dead. Some of them had to leave. Landed in Canada and had lived and worked there for a year. To build supplies so they could actually look for their brother. Just to see that he wasn’t even happy to see them.
The ride came back into the loading station again and she was hoping it was their turn to get off. Her hopes shattered when they carriage went straight past to go round the wheel again for a second time and she sighed, visibly annoyed.

Nagyapa had always said that his sons had turned his hair white, nagyanya had claimed bragging rights to it every time he had. Viktor was starting to believe that women were the root of it. Harmony continually left him feeling as though tearing it out at the roots would be the only relief he would get. Neither one of them would appreciate the comparison, but Aliz did the same. Frustration bleeding into him as they both pushed, fraying nerves, fuelling his temper. He was not nagyapa, he didn’t have the patience of decades of life to fall back on, just what had been pressed on him in the hold of the plane – a fire in his chest and a responsibility neither of them would have wanted.
He could have gripped the rail of the cart they sat in, using it to pull himself forward to bash his head on that strip of metal. It would have been less painful than the childishness back and forth with his sister – because he was committing the crime of wanting to keep them all safe in a world that threatened constantly.
Blind. Viktor muttered about his sister’s lack of sight and give, throwing his head back for a moment to stare up at the sky for a moment before there was a snap and it wasn’t his temper. He sat, staring at her with his mouth open. ”Nothing more than stupid,” he accused. Shaking his head, Viktor slumped back into his seat as the ride took off. It would have served Aliz right if this thing had malfunctioned and dumped her out into the air, punishment through a broken leg or neck – wounds he would feel right through the core of him if it did happen. That was the point, not that she saw it.
As a child he would’ve shoved her as she looked away, trying to prod her back in the same way until she gave in. She always would in the end, although with his absence, Aliz only seemed to have grown more stubborn and petulant. He hissed out a sigh, looking away from her too, muttering again in a way he knew she heard. It had stupid on his part to think that trapping her on this thing would make her talk, all it had done was change the scenery. Viktor dropped his hands away from his face, propping his forearms on the rail to watch her instead of that spread of lights twinkling below the two of them. ”Amiért őt hibáztatod. Helytelenül. You see her and say that I only look there … not for you, for us.” He’d gestured at himself, almost mapping out Harmony’s body in front of the flatter, harder lines of his own, but he broke off in an instant. He knew that Aliz had seen what all those men had – blonde hair, eyes like a summer sky that a man could fly free into like a bird, curves soft and welcoming (when they weren’t being used to drag him around by what he felt in the pit of his stomach just looking at her).
Promises had been broken, he couldn’t deny that, but not in the way Aliz believed. He had dragged Harmony across cities, skipping like a stone in a pond, trying to find some safe place to land. All Aliz had seen was the final spot, the one that he might have brought them too, if they had stayed safe here just a little longer. ”Soha nem adtam fel a keresést. De nem bíztál bennem? Miatta, vagy mert sosem bocsátottad meg, hogy elmentem?” His voice dropped low, tight. Aliz’s eyes had seemed to skip to the exit when the platform had swung around again, but tough luck, this was not done – the conversation or the ride that was lost on them both.
