It took some willpower not to look over her shoulder every five minutes as she packed up the car. Virgil had always had a talent for tracking down people who were preparing to run. It was what made him a great BCA agent, and a shittier ex-husband than she’d given him credit for. Kara sighed, shoving her duffel into the back seat, along with the locked suitcase that held all her equipment for work. She’d already given him plenty of credit for it, but she’d always believed that he wouldn’t bother coming the whole length of the country to try and track her down either.
The asshole.
She slammed the rear car door, giving in to the urge to glance around as she slipped into the passenger seat. There were already too many things she’d learned about the town not to bother locking the doors. Kara rested her hands on the wheel for a minute, studying the dusk laden street that ran past the motel. Somewhere out there Virgil was probably already plying his charm on some woman for the night. The man should’ve come with a warning – a bigger one than her brothers and coworkers had tried to give her. Stubborn as she was that hadn’t been enough, she’d let herself get suckered in and by the time she realised what a mistake she’d made, it was too late. Good luck to them. Hell, if she was lucky some husband with a shotgun would chase him back the way he’d come, maybe with a load of buckshot to the ass for good measure.
Starting the car, she pulled out onto the road, heading for what seemed to be the only other hotel in this town. It was probably going to cost her a month’s wages for just a couple of nights, but maybe that would be enough to get the message across. Kara grimaced as she realised that maybe he’d thought the same thing. The Grey Haven was probably above his budget – why waste money on a hotel when you could use it on wine, women and song? – you never knew though. More than once she’d swung past the place on the way through town, its glossy exterior standing out on the square. A definite step up on the sort of places she was used to staying in, less likely to have magic fingers attached to the beds, bound to have better towels and water pressure.
There was no sign of Virgil on her way over. There hadn’t been since he’d first turned up in town months ago, but she could feel him here like an itch between her shoulder blades. It had only intensified since her cousin had nearly run her over when she’d been in the middle of one of those banshee fugue states. With both Valerie and Virgil here the part of her life she’d carved off to try and start healing was getting far too close to that scarred part she’d left behind.
Five minutes later she was pulling into the hotel’s parking lot. Another look around her, her chin hitching higher as she grabbed her bags from the back seat. If Virgil was drifting around after her then she wasn’t giving him the satisfaction of seeing her rattled. Shouldering her duffle, Kara grabbed the suitcase with the opposite hand and started towards the hotel’s front door. The bag rattled alongside her, clattering as she went up the stairs. The sound seemed to fill the reception as she stepped inside, wringing a grimace out of her. She scooped it up by its fixed handle then, hefting it over to the desk.
She offered the woman behind it an apologetic smile before she sighed lightly and propped her forearms against the edge of the counter. If this had been LA or New York the hotel would likely be booked up for the night already, but this was Mystic Falls, maybe the ‘animal attacks’ had kept enough people away that she was gonna get lucky. ”Hi, I’d like a double room for a week, if you’ve got any available, please?” She didn’t want to have to pull her badge, but if it came down to making the demand, she’d do it and just cringe on the inside.

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia stood behind the counter mentally cursing the evening shift receptionist. She would have to pick up with this woman’s attendance, particularly when she was covering the desk in the evenings. Starting to become a habit, that she could tell. Catia flicked her eyes to the time, one hour before the desk closed and she could take off for the evening.
Since evenings were slow Catia was still able to do a lot of her work, while manning the desk. After a little while all Catia wanted to do was head back to her suit and call it a day. Sighing she flicked her eyes to the time again, only ten minutes had passed, ” This is going to be a long hour.” Catia muttered to herself as she forced herself to do more work.
A further twenty-five minutes into the hour she heard the door open, and she raised her eyes to it, to see a blonde, similar to her age, come inside and make her way slowly up to the desk. Catia offered her a welcoming smile, ” Welcome to the Grey Haven… can I help you?” She asked trying to keep her voice from sounding like a monotonous drone.
It only took the lady a moment to make her request and Catia nodded, ” Sure let me just check if we have one available.” Catia told the woman before lowering her gaze to her tablet, pulling up the system and did a very quick search for the double rooms that they had. Sure, there were plenty of rooms…available. None at the size that she wanted, ” My apologies, there are no double rooms available at the moment. We have single or twin rooms. Or a suite...” Catia offered for her.
Looking back down at her tablet, true enough there wasn’t any rooms available however one which was reserved hadn’t actually been checked into yet. In twenty minutes that room would become available if the person that had reserved it hadn’t checked in. That would be because they only allowed check ins up to a certain time. Catia could override the system and allow the girl to check in afterward, but since she had dangled the carrot of a suite, she wanted to see what the woman would say first.

Cowardly running away was almost as bad as finding your husband in bed with another woman in the first place. She’d hated it the first time she’d done it. Trying to square her shoulders and ignore that cringing deep inside as she’d cleared the last of her things from the house and had driven away. Kara had tried to tell herself then that it wasn’t cowardice – that would’ve been staying behind and knowingly clinging on to a marriage that she’d known was broken. Leaving was a sign of wisdom, of having the strength and the pride to admit that she deserved better. Maybe running from a shitty motel room in a town that was far more screwed up than any other she’d even been to was different, but she’d done it all the same.
She pictured Virgil hunkered down in whatever rust bucket he was driving in the motel parking lot. Hopefully for days on end, choking down cold coffee and pork rinds from the nearest convenience store. Racking his mind over whether or not she was there and just hiding behind closed drapes, like an animal licking its wounds. It was the least he deserved. He’d made the choice to destroy what was between them, karma had just taken the time to pay him back.
And maybe her too.
Head up, ignoring the itch between her shoulder blades, Kara walked into the Grey Haven hotel. Few places she ever stayed in on the road were this luxurious. Fish and Wildlife didn’t have the sort of budget that would allow that to happen. She’d grown used to tiny rooms where the best you could ask for were clean linens and a shower that got above freezing. This was dozens of steps above that – there weren’t going to be roaches scurrying out of sight under the bed when she flipped the lights on here.
Kara’s smile began a little less forced as the desk clerk smiled at her. There were no sour looks for trying to check in so late, just that perky welcome that was probably going to make this whole thing miles easier. ”Thank you,” Kara said on a sigh. ”Seems like this town has a serious shortage of hotels.” Which probably made her sound just like she was bitching about where she’d ended up, which wasn’t what she’d intended at all. Leaning on her elbow, she dragged a hand through her hair. If there wasn’t room here then it was going to be a miserable night in her car before she hit up the local real estate office tomorrow – renting an apartment or even a house was crazily excessive given that she never knew when she’d be leaving, but that was preferable to sleeping in her car until then.
As the woman paused, Kara felt her stomach sink. Somehow she’d managed to find the one night this huge place was fully booked out. Surely that had to be bullshit. Would Virgil have tried to pull some sort of asshole move on her? Book out every room in the place? Naw, even if he’d saved every penny he’d ever earned, surely he couldn’t do that. ”So it’s a twin bed or practically a whole floor?” Kara asked tightly. She didn’t curse, she gave herself credit for that. The part of her that still quivered with anger at the thought of running into Virgil again wanted to tear free. ”What’s the cost on a suite? And how big are we talking here? This place looks kinda …” Grand. Kara tipped her head back, looking up at the ceiling before she had to suck in a breath. The burn in her eyes was embarrassing and all Virgil’s thought. Wasn’t breaking her heart enough? Now he had to empty her bank account and leave her crying in damn public too. Freaking asshole.

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia did feel a little bad when she had to reveal that there were no room available with what she wanted. Most people they had here were businessmen. Or a ridiculously rich couple… it was rare that a random living pay day to pay day person would want to stay here. They did have some rooms at a lower rate for the average person… but even then, they were luxurious. The reason why their prices were so high, they could charge it.
She gave her the news and then told her that at the moment only twin rooms or suites were available. Catia didn’t want to insult the woman and say a suit was out of her price range. She wasn’t that harsh. It was entirely up to her what she could and couldn’t afford. Catia waited for her answer, ” I wouldn’t say a whole floor, but the suits are quite spacious yes.” Catia chuckled a little as she reached for her tablet and bought up pictures of a suite and rested them on the counter.
She lived in one similar… as she didn’t need loads of space. It was practical for her living in the hotel, a roof over her head for free. Though hotel living wasn’t for everyone, and this woman looked like she was ready to set up camp. When she asked for the price Catia conceded, ” Cheapest is six hundred dollars a night…” Catia answered her.
Catia flicked her gaze back to her computer screen looking at the time. Fifteen minutes and the room she wanted would become available. Could tell that she didn’t just want a room, she needed one. Practically holding back tears that Catia took pity, ” Look. Reservations only last for another fifteen minutes. There are three double room bookings that haven’t checked in yet. Kill time at the bar, if they haven’t checked in, one of the rooms is yours.” Catia told her kindly, ” But if they come in… I am sorry but rooms are theirs.” Catia told her. She reached behind the counter and reached for a single complimentary drink voucher, ” Fifteen minutes…” Catia reminded her.
She watched as she went over to the bar and Catia went back to waiting the fifteen minutes herself. Fifteen minutes and she could call it a day herself, and she could close reception. People that didn’t check in in a timely manner honestly annoyed her. During the fifteen minutes two of the three rooms that had been reserved had been checked into.
Three minutes… two…

The torment was never gonna end. She was going to be 90 – if she ever made it that far – still trying to run from the wreckage of her marriage, clinging onto her walker with a death grip to make sure she didn’t slip back. Virgil had been all charm when they had fallen in love – or she had – but now Kara wanted to think that she could see through that curtain and wouldn’t be blind to it again. It wasn’t enough though, Virgil seemed set on continuing to twist her up in it, like suddenly it would open and she would see a different picture beyond it.
Lies. They clustered as thickly around him as his charm did. Choking her until she’d bolted again, walker free as yet, to try and get away from them.
Her chest went tight as the clerk started to check the system. Worst case scenarios pouring in, the main one centring around how far he would go to try and force her to talk to him. It was easier to force his way into her life in the shitty confines of a cheap motel or the paper thin metal box of her car. Here there was a glossy, professional wall between the outside world and her and she’d planned to monopolise on it until she could find some way to avoid him permanently.
Kara let out a shaky break, her brows knotting as her hands fisted. She’d be able to claim most of this on expenses but Frank would sure as hell demand answers as to why his budget was suddenly shot to hell. He’d understand, she didn’t want to spread all of her dirty laundry out for him to see though. There was no need to pour out a sad story to her boss, or to this woman. ”More space than I’d probably need,” she said tightly. So crammed into the box of a twin room, balled up in a bed she’d outgrown when she was ten or something palatial. Pressing her tongue against the roof of her mouth, Kara frowned down at the photos. It was nice, swank even, the sort of place she’d never have picked out of choice.
Dipping her head as she brought it back down, Kara resisted the urge to scream. The motel had been enough – just enough – to keep her in relative comfort until she had just enough to pass all of this over to Frank. She didn’t, not yet, not in a town that was so tight lipped over the supernatural that it was a wonder it hadn’t burst yet. ”Jesus,” she choked out. ”No wonder you can afford all the marble.” Her stomach felt as slick and as cold as the hard floor under her feet. One night, maybe two, it had to be enough, didn’t it?
Something must have shown in her face, the woman was glancing back at her screen. Figuring out if she should offer her a corner of the basement as a favour? Maybe for just two hundred a night instead? Kara planted her elbows on the edge of the counter and squeezed the heels of her hands against her temples. Her blue eyes ticked up at the woman as she spoke again. ”You think there’s a chance someone’ll skate out?” In a place like this she would’ve been on the phone the minute she knew she wasn’t coming, sure that there’d still take a chunk of the payment for their troubles if she just didn’t show up.
Alright. Alright. Fifteen minutes in the bar and maybe she’d luck out, she could do it. ”Thank you,” Kara said, her voice raw as she took the voucher that was slid towards her. ”If they don’t … I’ll think about the suite … but you’d be really saving my life here.” Maybe sitting out on the front steps of the hotel and threatening everybody who approached with her service weapon would’ve been a smarter move, but she retreated to the bar instead, exchanging the voucher for a vodka soda, a double. A second had joined it, taking a tiny chip from her bank account, by the time the clock had ticked down to just 60 seconds left. She’d heard the doors open twice. That meant one chance left right?
As the clock swept around in that final arc, Kara slid down off of her seat, dragging her bag back with her towards the counter. Her hands pressed together in a sign of hope but she stopped short of crossing herself. ”Did I get lucky?” she asked, her throat raw. She wasn’t about to risk a glance over her shoulder to see if she’d end up fist fighting it out with someone rushing in late to snatch that room up. If she had to, she would, she wasn’t gonna be above swinging for someone tonight.

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
It had been a long day. Only getting made longer by being forced to sit at reception. Two reasons. Receptionist had to go home with a family emergency, and people being late to check in on their reservations. When a young blonde woman came in she half hoped it was one of the reservations, one step closer to her goal of maybe closing reception early.
Nope.
She wasn’t that lucky. Made worse a little when she requested something that she didn’t have available. She felt bad. She looked like she really needed it. Some place to simply get away, leave her troubles, and Catia was just guessing there were a fair few at the door. She offered her a suite, but the price almost had her bolting. Any other day, time, or person Catia might have stuck to her guns. To see if she would cave and take the better room.
In minute she took pity and lifted a drinks voucher for the bar and slipped it across the counter, briefly explaining the reservation policy, and how it expired on a few rooms in fifteen minutes. That she could go and have a drink at the bar, relax a little, and come back then, ” Don’t thank me yet. Just relax and be back in fifteen minutes.” Catia told her.
She watched as she walked away, and Catia mentally crossed her fingers and wished her luck as Catia also waited. Minutes went back, dragging on for what seemed like an hour. In the time two people had checked in, claiming their rooms. Only one left. With the fifteen minutes expired she seen the reservation unlock the room automatically in the system.
Catia already clicking in the mangers code to override the system which would normally lock out normal receptionists. When she got back to the desk all she needed was a name and a card to secure the room. Catia smiled when she got back, ” You got lucky. All I need is name and a card to secure the room.” Catia told her, fingers at the ready to type in her name.

With Virgil she’d always been looking for the finish line one way or another. As a newly minted patrol officer he’d pushed her, running her just as fast as he could, knowing that she was capable of more than she believed she was. Maybe she had been, but as her lungs, legs and eyes had burned, she’d just been gritting her teeth, looking for the moment when it would be over. If she’d looked at her relationship that way right back at the start maybe she’d have seen what a sham it was long before she’d torn her way past that finish line with her broken heart burning instead.
Seeing him out in those woods, the face that had always been too handsome (another warning sign right there), she’d wanted to run for another finish line. Who knew where that was though. Virgil had never let anything go easily – except for their marriage. The fight had been short and full of accusations, but there’d been no begging when she’d had the divorce documents delivered for his signature. It should’ve been it.
Now the tape looked a million miles, or rather, a dozen floors away, if she was gonna get lucky there. Dragging her hands away from her temples, purposefully not glancing over her shoulder at the doors again, Kara took the voucher and offered the woman a tired smile. ”I’m going with positive thinking, I’m gonna be thanking you got getting a room.” If the universe didn’t slap her down for the second time that day. If it did there was always her car, either giving in and sleeping fitfully in the back seat, or just calling Frank and telling him she was done. She could probably get back home this time tomorrow night if she didn’t bother stopping to try and get some sleep. Put this town and Virgil in her rear view finally.
Clutching the voucher and her hope she’d retreated to the hotel’s bar. The vodka sodas hadn’t made up her mind for her, but they’d taken the edge off of her raw nerves. Taking another chunk out of her credit card balance by emptying the mini-bar in the room was going to be a mistake, but if she got desperate enough … Hope burned in the pit of her stomach as she made her way back towards the reception. She’d heard the door open a few times, had kept her fingers crossed that one of them wasn’t going to make it. Studying the woman behind the counter she tried to get a read on her. Not disappointment, that had to mean something right. Thank God. Kara pressed her hands to the bottom of her face, relief finally rushing through her. ”That’s a first,” she drawled lightly. ”Luck definitely hasn’t been on my side today.” Tugging her wallet out, Kara pushed her credit card across the counter. Maybe she should send the bill to Frank, call it a necessary expensive even if she wasn’t going to explain to him why she’d had to leave the cheap motel. ”Kara Moretti … Agent Moretti. Do you need ID?” In a place like this she wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up running a credit report. She tugged the badge fold off her belt anyway, flipping it open on the counter so the woman could see it. It wasn’t like she was CIA or FBI, they’d be far too cheap to pay for a place like this on the government’s dime.

❝ I'll Take These Broken Wings... Watch Me Burn Across The Sky❞
Catia hoped that she wouldn’t be letting the woman down. Though at this moment her hands were tied. Two of the three reservations ended up checking in. One remaining… and Catia kept waiting. Stayed on the system until the reservations automatically released themselves.
The moment it was release she was back in the system generating a new booking. Filling in what she could while she waited for the woman to return from the bar. Once she returned Catia revealed that luck was on her side, and she had a room. All she needed was a name and a card to secure it for her. Kara, as she learned, slid her ID and credit card across the counter. She lifted both her eyes quickly flitting across the ID before returning it, ” Nice to meet you…” Catia told her as her fingers danced across the keyboard. Smiling a little realizing she had shown a work ID, ” Let me know if ever you want to charge this to your boss.” Catia joked a little.
Finishing it up on the computer she turned away from it handing her back her cards, with additional room key card, along with a leaflet, ” Room is 363, third floor Turn right once you exit the lift and continue down the corridor. Room should be on your left. The key card is also required to operate the lift, additional security measure.” Catia explained, ” You slide in the key card before pressing the button for your floor.” Catia explained, ” Leaflet of services and night numbers. Just use your room phone if you need anything.” She told her just as someone else came crashing through the door, ” Have a good stay…” She then turned her attention to the man which had just come in.
Ahh…. The last reservation. Oh well… it was now too late. Smiling politely, ” Sorry sir. Check in ended fifteen minutes ago. Any reservations are now voided. Only suites are available.” Catia said politely, perfectly professional. Well, this guy looked positively livid, demanding his room as he had it reserved, how dare there not be a room available when he had one reserved and was only fifteen minutes late past check in, ” I’m afraid under reservation policy, we have strict check in times. You reservation is void since you were late.” Catia told him perfectly professional but now she almost sounded bored, ” I have suites available, and I am able to check you in to one of those. For an additional out of hours fee. Or I can direct you to other accommodation in town. Mystic Motel is just a few blocks away…” Catia told him. Mentioning the Mystic Motel was deliberate, some clientele here were quite specific… and some wouldn’t be caught dead there. This was definitely one of those judging by his suit and his attitude.
Catia however stood her ground. He either got a suite or would have to look elsewhere. Eventually he conceded. Sliding his card and details across the counter Catia busied herself again. For his rudeness she whacked on an extortionate out of hours fee. A fee she had waived for Kara but now secretly snuck it into his bill, ” Enjoy your stay…” Catia said almost moments later, sliding his cards back across the counter without the leaflet and didn’t warn him about the elevator. She waited only a few moments and heard the elevator start shouting at him demanding a key, ” Perfect end to a perfect day…” She chuckled to herself.
Notes: Finish here or end with yours?
