━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ June 8th FREYJA LIKED TO RAG on Frank for collecting strays, but somehow she and Theo had done the same. Okay, so Cory and Dani weren’t directly off the street like the dark-haired widower who came to their wedding, but they still weren’t family, something she’d learned from her parents━there was a time for friends, and there was a time for family, and at family events, you keep them separate. She was allowed to bring her first boyfriend to family gatherings, but that was only after they’d shifted from best friends to in-a-relationship.
And he’d never done anything special like bring her husband back to life, so Cory got a pass. It started slow, scattered holiday dinner invitations so they could thank him. But, as soon as Freyja realized he didn’t have much family to celebrate with, a-few-times-a-year turned into every Sunday, and Dani was always more than welcome, of course. They alternated between Frank’s house and their house, but this wasn’t Sunday. It was an extra-special Wednesday night, celebrating the birth of the two people who were now family━who were to thank for Freyja even having a family.
And because she was so thankful, she didn’t try cooking for them. Whether it’d been sixteen years or not yet one year (it felt like both at times, but Hazel was a teenager now, right? So it had to be sixteen), her skills never improved, and a store-bought cake seemed best. She’d picked it up on her way home from work after not-so-subtly drilling the twins for their favourite kind and picking Theo’s brain on whether or not she should get two or just one. She’d decided that one was cuter and, if they happened to like two different kinds, she’d request one cake that was half and half.
Happy 32nd Birthday Dani & Cory! Thankfully, the thing wasn’t a monstrosity. The lettered icing was drizzled on in cursive, beaming up at Freyja as she grinned back down at it. It was fit carefully onto her car’s passenger seat, buckled in, and managed to survive the journey, then its storage throughout dinner. Now it rested on the counter with Freyja’s back to the dinner table━as if the cake was a big surprise━while a bunch of candles were stabbed into the top, in a ring around the edge. All the wicks burst to life without the need for a lighter━just a bit of concentration on her part━and then it was scooped up and hovering above her belly as she (somehow) waddled to the table with it.
“Happy Birthday to you…” She started singing as she walked out, getting around to the twins’ side of the table by the time the song came to a close, with Freyja proudly stuffing too many syllables into the second-last line and rushing through it. “Happy Birthday, dear DanielleandCory… Happy Birthday to you!” Slipping the cake onto the table in front of them, Freyja let one hand drift to her belly, the other falling to the back of Cory’s neck. She bent to place a gentle kiss on the top of his head, just as she would’ve done with Hazel, and then reached over to squeeze Dani’s shoulder affectionately.
“Make a wish!” Freyja chimed, shifting from the pair of them and towards Theo to watch as if the twins were just another two of their kids (despite being older than Freyja). “Get some good photos,” She whispered to Theo, giving him a couple nudges like she didn’t have her own phone.

June 8th
Up on his feet as Freyja slipped out into the kitchen for the C A K E, Theo began to gather up the mess from the table. Napkins on emptied plates, cutlery, set aside for the moment before he started to refill drinks, each offer made with the familiar wiggle of bottles of wine and soda, one in each hand. It wouldn’t be long before Hazel started trying to talk just a sip out of them, and about a decade more before they circled back around to giving her just a taste again. It was easier when she’d been smaller and a sip of what her parents had been drinking was enough to bring on the sort of spluttering and gagging that guaranteed she wouldn’t want any again for a long while to come. Cory had put his hand over his glass the last time, asking for soda instead and Theo was glad to pour what was left of the bottle of that into his glass. It was hard to see the guy who’d pulled his ass back from the other side as a kid, but despite the fact that they were pretty close to the same age that was the energy that had rolled off of Cory they’d met. A sort of innocent nervousness that his sister didn’t seem to share. They were close though, Theo saw it as he snagged a fresh bottle of soda out of the nearly cleared centre of the table and held the bottles up to Dani in question. ”Can I pour you another glass of something?” As twins it was almost inevitable. They didn’t share a face the same way he and Frank did – the similarities feeling stronger than even with their makeshift ‘family’ gathered around them – but it didn’t make that bond any weaker, didn’t stop him from seeing how the two of them cared about one another. One who’d spent years somewhere else and one who’d ached to get him back. Swallowing hard at the thought of how close they’d come to none of this happening – him getting to see his daughter grow up into this incredible, smart, too smart for her own good, kid, having Bo, the wedding, the house, the expansion of all those picket fences around their life to include everybody who’d drifted into it over the last sixteen years – Theo filled his own glass with white wine and settled back in his seat. Cory had given it all to them with that unbelievable act. How could they not have made room around the dinner table for him after that? Especially for his birthday, theirs. Theo was pretty sure there was supposed to be some bullshit about celebrating them less when you got older, but when you really had something to celebrate for it you couldn’t do it often enough. Sixteen years creeping up on them with these gatherings growing more frequent, ping-ponging back and forth between Frank’s place and theirs, landing up on the Wednesday night to go all out for managing another year here. Theo’s brows furrowed as he glanced over at Freyja and saw the candles lighting. There were days when it felt like just months since he’d been watching Hazel smear child-friendly, pretty damn crappy yellow buttercream all over her face with chubby fists, others were he could’ve rolled off every memory they’d built as a family and it would’ve still felt like there hadn’t been enough time to fit it in. Somehow they had, those days rushing by until now. Each year counted off in the candles that flared into life one by one behind the screen of Freyja’s growing bulk. His eyes narrowed further, his lips quirking up in that knowing smile as she turned back around. Cheat.Light glowed around his wife as she brought the cake out, the singing rolling out. Theo winced at the sound of his own voice. At least he had a hearing impairment to blame for the bum note at the end of that crooned ”Happy Birthday, dear Danielle and Coooorrry”, Frank didn’t have squat to cover it, but was still just as bad. He set his glass down, starting to clap as that last line burst out. ”Happy Birthday to you!”Freyja was setting the cake down, her lips finding the top of Cory’s head in that almost absent motherly gesture, her hand on Dani’s shoulder, squeezing. One of those moments he’d had every year with his mom and Frank, at least, in Okinawa. Candle lit and seeming to hover on the brink of somehow changing the course of your future with one wish. As Freyja came close his arm slid around her hips. Theo turned his head to nuzzle that growing curve of her bump, hazel eyes rolling up as she whispered her order to him. ”Your mom’s so bossy,” Theo mock whispered to that curve. He clucked his tongue, slowly rising to his feet. ”Hazelnut, you wanna grab the plates?” Sorry kiddo, the orders always rolled downhill. Fishing in his pocket, Theo retrieved his camera, blowing a kiss to his wife as he snapped a shot of her first. He thumbed it onto video, alright, a little late, he should’ve done when the cake came out, but held it on long enough for the two of them to blow those candles out, before he continued to circle the table, tapping away at the screen to snap some decent – alright, some were pretty good – photos.

━ sorry can't save me now. i'm not okay i feel so scattered ━
JUNE 8th. A day Danielle dreading every single year because it was a constant reminder that she would never age, would never grow old. Could never have kids. Danielle would forever be stuck in this age, in this body, unable to move forward. She supposed Cory was now in the same boat, although she wasn't entirely sure on how the whole reaper title worked. Nevertheless, not being able to age like anyone else bothered Danielle more than she would ever admit it would. Although, it was no secret she despised her birthday. It was even more apparent to her brother. Her birthday was not a happy day for her, never really was. More so after Cory had died and that unhappy tradition only continued the moment she had been turned into a vampire. So when Cory told her about a little get together being thrown for the two of them, she wasn't exactly thrilled, nor did she even want to go. All she wanted was to sulk in their tiny ass motel room with a bottle of whiskey. But Cory, the optimistic twin of the two, was being annoyingly persistent on her attending with him, granted she didn't know the hosts too terribly well, but she would do it for Cory.
Just hoped they had plenty of alcohol to go around because she was definitely going to need it.
Regardless of how she felt, Danielle wouldn't be rude or disrespectful towards the hosts, they were nice and honest people and knew what Cory had done for them and their family. Hell, ever since Cory had brought Theo back to life the two had been thrust into their family like they always had been. Danielle and Cory didn't have family to celebrate with, then again, they never really did. Growing up, it had always been only them two. Danielle remembered birthdays where she had scrounged together whatever funds she had to buy Cory a birthday present. She would rather him have something than herself. Always the protector, always putting her brother before herself. That had been the story of their lives and that hadn't changed, even now. Even more so now that Cory was back in her life and alive. She wouldn't lose her brother again. Come hell or high water, she would protect him with her life.
She would allow herself to relax and have a bit of fun, although every fiber of her being was going against it, resisted it even. The twins sat next to one another at the table, surrounded by obnoxious birthday decorations thanks to Freyja who went way too over the top. But in a way, she was thankful for it. The two hadn't ever really gotten celebrated like this before and in more ways than she could count, it made her feel welcomed, made her feel wanted. She couldn't thank them enough for their hospitality or generosity. As the two sat there, she watched as Theo poured Cory a glass of soda. Whereas he wasn't going to drink, she certainly was. So when Theo asked if he could pour her a glass of something, she motioned towards the wine bottle that sat a few inches from the soda.
When her glass was poured, Danielle took a long sip out of her glass before setting it down. And just as she did so, she saw the lights dim and watched as Freyja came out with a cake in her arms, beginning to sing Happy Birthday. This was something that made Danielle's heart swell ten sizes. This was the kind of experience her and Cory both had missed out on, her more so than Cory because she had always made sure Cory was taken care of first. 'Happy Birthday, dear Danielle and Coooorrry. Happy Birthday to you!' They all sung as her and Cory watched the cake be lowered onto the table in front of them. Danielle smiled, tears forming in her eyes as she looked at the beautifully decorated cake. She felt a reassuring hand on her shoulder as Freyja squeezed, a motherly gesture at best, but it felt just like a mother's touch would. Warm and comforting.
'Make a wish!'
A wish. Danielle had so many things she wanted to wish for. That their parents hadn't been absent. That Cory had never gotten sick, had never died. That Oliver hadn't went missing... that she had never been turned... So many things to wish for, she didn't know what particular thing to focus in on. What could she? Despite it, she knew what she truly wanted and so she grabbed a hold of her twin's hand and together the two blew out the candles. Her wish? That she and Cory both would find the happiness they both had been craving. Oh did she oh-so-desperately crave happiness, to have a life worth living. Ever since Cory's death, since Oliver's disappearance, that hadn't been a reality. And honestly?
She didn't think it ever would be.

The first time he’d sat at the table he’d been tied up in knots. Every time Freyja or Theo had bustled to and from the table with something, or attention had turned to him, he’d flinched, almost like he was waiting for the moment of perfect family life going on around him to crack like an egg shell. In those moments between he’d been as quiet as they’d allow, watching, drinking it in like he was today. There hadn’t been many days like those at home, not that he could remember anyway.
Birthday candles blown out on home-made cakes, a scant handful of candles on them, him and Dani crammed together at one side of the table to blow them out while their parents watched. If there’d been any proof of those times ever happening then they’d been lost in the wake of his dad’s death. All the happy moments suddenly tainted, drowned with the dregs of what remained in the bottle their mom clutched. The family torn apart, never to fit together in the same way again.
Cory watched Freyja get up from the table again, his gaze dragged back as Theo bobbed up, bottles in his hands. Their family had almost ended up the same way. A hunter cleaving his way through the middle of what they’d had, leaving Theo stuck on one side of the veil with Freyja was on the other, Hazel completely unaware of it, growing in her mom’s stomach – maybe still unaware, he hadn’t dared to ask about that, hadn’t wanted to disturb this. The shattered parts of their life had gone back together, any gaps that might’ve been left filled in with the birth of their daughter and the bloom of their married life. He’d kept an eye on them of course, never expecting that first invitation to be extended. Or for Dani to eventually be enfolded into it all.
This was more of a thank you than he’d ever expected for doing what he thought was right in a situation that was all wrong for two – three – people who hadn’t deserved it. He could’ve blamed the couple of glasses of wine he’d had for the glow that rose in his cheeks, but it was gratitude just as much as it was the wash of alcohol. As Theo held the two bottles there and then started pouring the soda for him, Cory grinned almost sheepishly. ”Thanks, don’t wanna be staggering home after,” he admitted, turning that grin on his sister before he swallowed hard. That issue didn’t affect his sister anymore, being turned had put an end to all of that and to so much of what he would’ve wanted for her life, her happiness. Someone to love her, a family for her to have like this one, some kids one day to make him the best uncle he could possibly be, getting to see her chasing grandkids around with the prop of a cane.
The thought cut off as Freyja started singing. Cake?
Theo sat up, setting the glass of soda aside, the grin that spread over his face bright as the red that stained his cheeks. They’d really gone too far out of their way, for both of them. Reaching for his sister’s hand as Danielle reached for his, he clutched it as he saw both their names scrawled on top, ringed by the candles, maybe enough for there to be one for each year… ”Oh man,” he chuckled. His other hand came up to press to one burning cheek as Freyja kissed the top of his head. ”You guys didn’t really have to do this, but, thank you.” He was beaming, his eyes seeking out his sister’s after they flicked almost anxiously to Theo and the camera. ”You ready?” he asked. He wasn’t sure if he was but …
Squeezing his eyes tight shut, like that would make a difference, Cory blew out the candles as Danielle did. Wishes had always been those things he’d whispered to himself, here, in Heaven, always hoping for something to give his sister back half the happiness and security she’d given him. Now it was the same. He wished for Oliver, for the thing inside of him to disappear, for his sister to have her husband, and that happiness she’d found after he’d died, back again. For Brooke to get her brother. And right at the end, as his heart squeezed in his chest – for Petyr to have this one day with his parents right there with him.
Opening his eyes again, he grinned sheepishly around at the table. You weren’t meant to share secrets were you? Even if they wanted to burst out of your throat because keeping them had never been your forte. ”When…” he cleared his throat, licked lips gone dry as he looked at Theo and Freyja, the baby to be, then settled on Hazel. ” … when do you guys do presents … I’m …” The blush burned hotter in his cheeks. ”I don’t mean I expect anything from you guys … this was way more than enough, it was incredible, t-thank you. I got … I got something for Dani though…” And he’d held it back that morning, knowing that dinner at least was coming tonight. He got out the narrow box, wrapped carefully in construction paper he’d scrawled a pattern on himself. The watch he’d had engraved for her – something to leave with her in case … something more than the apartment full of meaningless junk that had been all his sister had of him the last time.

The seats around the dining table kept increasing, which didn’t bother Hazel. She wasn’t exactly born into a household with just her parents so she was more than happy when Dani and Cory were invited to join them for dinner on Sundays. Her parents didn’t say where they knew Dani and Cory from, but something about Cory helping her dad out at some point and they became friends after that and Dani was Cory’s twin sister. The only drawback was the table was always full of adults and sometimes she didn’t have a lot in common with them. Conversations would bounce back and forth about things she couldn’t contribute to, so she would remain quiet, nibbling on her food and listening. It wasn’t often adult topics that were thrown around the dinner table anyway. Hazel was convinced they’d save that for when she would disappear upstairs later in the evening. Although she couldn’t imagine Uncle Kit and Uncle Frank partaking in such adult conversations. Nonetheless, all of that was about to change. She could barely contain her excitement when her parents announced they were having another child. Hazel was going to be a big sister which was a huge responsibility, but one she was totally ready for. She could help out with feeding and take her sibling to the park whenever her parents needed a break. The mere thought of holding her little brother or sister in her arms filled her with joy. She was counting down the days until she could finally meet her baby sibling, snuggle them close and protect them. She had yet to meet this baby but already she was prepared to dive in front of a truck for them. Alongside the joy was a trickle of worry though. It would be another child to inherit their parent’s special gifts. Hazel was praying that it somehow alternated. She picked up her dad’s abilities so their next child would pick up her mom’s abilities. She didn’t want her baby brother or sister having to go through what she had been through, but she kept that worry to herself. It was a bridge they would have to cross when they came to it. Together, as a family. As she gathered around the table with everyone else her mind trailed off to how cool it would be to have a twin. Maybe not a twin brother, but a sister. An identical one too, like her dad and Uncle Frank. They could play tricks on their parents and friends and she would have always had someone there to play dolls with when growing up. She peaked at her mom’s belly for a moment as she emerged from the kitchen. Were there twins growing in there? Hazel had signed up to be a big sister to one sibling, but she wasn’t sure about two new siblings. Taking two babies to the park? It sounded exhausting. Hazel snapped out her own thoughts as she realised everyone around her had started singing happy birthday. “... to you.” She mumbled, joining in a few seconds late, but her volume increased slightly as she continued, “Happy Birthday, dear Danielle and Cory… Happy Birthday to you!” She clapped softly as the cake was placed down on the table. There was no way her mom had made that, it must have been bought from the store. Still, it was an amazing cake and she was itching for a slice. She watched as the twins blew the candles out, both of them making a silent wish. If the cake was placed down in front of her with candles she would be wishing for a smooth pregnancy for her mom and her sibling would turn out to be a psychic. That was assuming she would be allowed two wishes. Her mind trailed off again. How did Dani and Cory’s wish work? There was only one set of candles. Do they still get a wish each? Photos. Her mom mentioned photos. There was a low groan in Hazel’s throat at the mention of that as she brought her hand up to run her fingers through her hair to make sure she’d look okay. Unfortunately the twin’s birthday fell just before her hair washing day. She then turned her attention to her dad, giving him a quick nod before dashing out towards the kitchen, hoping to avoid any photos. Hazel reached up into the cupboard, grabbing enough plates for everyone and heading back towards the table. She placed them carefully down on the end of the table. ━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ “OH, HUSH.” FREYJA GRINNED AS HER LIPS brushed Cory’s hair, waving away his gratitude. Of course they had to, but they wanted to. Cory was the entire reason they could, and Freyja wasn’t one to let good deeds go unappreciated. Circling the table back to Theo, she snorted at him, then held back the urge to flip off the camera. Freyja rolled her eyes and grinned, freezing to allow him to snap a photo before her attention settled on the twins again.
This was for them, and she wanted to make sure they had a memory of it━all of them. In Cory’s line of work, he likely didn’t have a lot of easy days and, from what she’d heard, Dani’s life wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows either. But she wanted the twins to know that they were loved, and they always had a place to go; somewhere they could feel safe and welcome.
Watching them squeeze each other’s hands brought that familiar burn back to Freyja’s chest, and it spread up her throat and to her eyes. Before she knew it, she was blubbering quietly, trying to mask the tears as she frantically whisked them from her cheeks. “Shut up,” She puffed━it came out as a whisper, and with a big smile━as she made eye contact with Theo. “It’s the baby. There’s no way I would be━oh, gosh, just… look at you guys, you’re so sweet. I’m so glad we could do this,” Freyja sobbed, though she was smiling through it and motioning to the twins and their cake. She laughed at the absurdity of her tears and shook her head, releasing a long breath. A pause to stare at the ceiling seemed to help for a moment, and then Freyja sniffled and grinned at her husband.
“I’m still not as bad as you.” She argued, wandering around the table as Hazel returned with fresh plates. Freyja pressed a wet kiss to her daughter’s cheek, wishing she could tell her all about Cory and what he’d done for them, about what’d happened while Hazel was still growing━just like Bo was now.
Her attention fixed on Cory next, the stutters from his mouth, and finally, her tears began to ease when she had something else to focus on. “Don’t be silly, sweetheart,” Freyja hushed him lightly, and moved back into the kitchen to get their gifts. A small gift bag for Cory and an envelope for Dani, tucked just out of sight. “These are from the three of us,” She spoke as she returned, placing them on the table, just on the other side of the cake. “You wanna grab a knife for the cake? And some more forks?” Freyja asked Hazel, flashing her a smile as payment for being their go-fer.
She went back to the spot across from Theo’s and sat, watching Cory and Dani exchange gifts, cooing over them.
In Cory’s bag sat a new set of pencils, rulers and a sketchbook. In Dani’s envelope, between the pages of the card, were vouchers for classes at the local dance studio. “We can exchange any of them,” Freyja began when they got to those gifts, “Just let us know.” Mostly, she was worried about getting Dani’s gift wrong━Cory was a sure thing. Green eyes shifted from him to his sister, “Cory mentioned that, when you guys were younger, you loved doing dance, but that ya had to give it up. We just thought…” She shrugged, then smiled at Theo, almost searching for reassurance and offering it at the same time.

June 8th
He hadn’t gotten to do this the last time - not the birthday celebrations for Cory and Dani, of course, that had all sprung out of what had happened in the whirlwind of a nightmare that had struck when that hunter had appeared on campus - but watching his family grow with that deep seated contentment inside of him. Watching Freyja’s belly grow with each passing day, actually getting to trace his hands over it and feel the lines of their lives shifting and adjusting and swelling with this new addition. Even once Cory had brought him back the last time Theo had felt as though the edges of all those lines were jagged, fractured by his death like a bone that would take time to heal. It had all knitted back eventually, the bone - their lives - stronger for the trauma they had sustained, even if it would never be exactly as it was again. Theo was glad it wasn’t exactly as it was. The expansion of those lines had brought them this. Ridiculously loud, and tuneless on his part, singing around the table, the grin he felt tugging at his own cheeks until they ached, as he saw the way it lit Dani and Cory up (although if Dani started really crying he was gonna join in, damn sympathetic tear ducts). He saw the way his wife mothered Cory and Dani just as she did Hazel - although definitely with less of the ordering around tonight. And he saw the love in that roll of Freyja’s eyes as he caught her first. There were tears in those eyes just a moment later, sparkling as she puffed out those words to silence him before he’d even said a word. Theo snorted, lifting both hands like he was warding it off, although he made eye contact with Dani and grinned. ”She acts like it’s the hormones, but we all know my wife’s just a soft touch.” Honestly, almost two decades with him had probably left Freyja’s tear ducts just as quick off the draw. The laugh rolled out of him as the blame inevitably swung around to him. ”Don’t bring me into this, I’m totally dry eyed…” And he was a liar. There was that tell tale burn in his own eyes. But there was nothing wrong with that, when you were happy you had to show it, whether that was in the sort of grin that seemed to light Cory up from his very core when he was around his sister. Cory was lit up now, the photos showing that bond between the kids that he really hoped Hazel would have with Bo, and the half dozen other kids they definitely weren’t going to wait another sixteen years to try for. Theo half lowered the phone as Freyja kissed their daughter’s cheek, once there were all those litt’luns running around Hazel would have someone to share all the annoying chores with, that stuff always rolled downhill. More snaps as the gift bags went down on the table - the gifts he hadn’t been allowed to wrap (one present sealed in an entire roll of tape and it was never forgotten) - carefully thought over. Cory’s had been easy, he wasn’t shy about his passions, Dani’s far harder, although one unsolicited comment from Cory had helped there. ”Skillfully wrapped by Freyja. I’m on a ban. Honestly, we’re glad to be able to do this. You guys are family.” Theo’s grin was quick, turned on his daughter just as fast. ”And some napkins? Thank you, Hazelnut.” He crooned their nickname for there daughter, remembering what it had felt like to be go-fer for his own parents back when he was a little younger than Hazel. Those memories never faded. Like the healed fracture lines still visible on bones, they lingered in those shifted lines, little blips you could barely see or feel sometimes but they were there. Like Dani’s dancing, set aside for necessity, but maybe her fingers would find it again now, with the chance to reach back. You didn’t forget. Theo felt every one of his own inside of himself when Freyja’s eyes met his - and yep, he was tearing up despite his dry eyed lie - and smiled back, glad he could. ”We thought maybe now could be a time you could take it back up. There should be someone around the table not cursed with two left feet, right?” God, he wanted that for Hazel and Bo and all their kids, the chance to hold on to their passions, for them to live lives where sacrifice wasn’t necessary, for them to be able to indulge and be happy.
