That day started out just like any other. It was the weekend which meant that Ric didn’t have to worry about heading out to the Salvatore School to teach any classes or do any paperwork, he was free to spend the day with his family. They had members of staff who lived at the school and kept an eye on those who boarded there but for Ric weekends meant family time and he wouldn’t have it any other way. There were still times when he had to pinch himself that this was actually real, he had wanted a family of his own for such a long time and he had thought that he would get to have that with Isobel but she had chosen a life as a vampire over a life with him and in doing so she had broken his heart. He had lost his way for a long time after that but during that time he had learned about the supernatural world and now he was doing his best to protect those around him as best he could. He knew now that not everyone who was supernatural was bad, some didn’t have anyone to help them learn to control themselves when they first started out and Ric had seen time and time again just how scary that could be for all of them. Ever since arriving in Mystic Falls and befriending the people he had done he had ended up becoming much more open minded and he was glad about that. Years ago he never would have dreamed that his life would end up like this, now his family was made up of werewolves, witches and vampires and he knew that there were so many others out there as well. The school he and Jenna had opened was a safe haven for anyone who was trying to find their way in navigating the supernatural world and he couldn’t deny that he was proud of everything that they had done. It had started out that they were just trying to protect their daughters when they were born but it had turned into something so much more. When they had taken Jed in they hadn’t really known what was going to happen, Ric had found him after Jed had killed his father and shifted for the first time and even now he could still remember the scared young boy he had found that day. Bringing him home was something he had known was dangerous but his heart had gone out to the boy and slowly but surely he had started to open up and trust them. It had been an unofficial thing to start with but as time went on they had started looking into whether or not they would be able to make it permanent. Unfortunately Ric’s history and the restraining order Isobel had once filed against him had made it difficult but now as he flicked through the mail his heart stopped as his gaze came to rest on a letter from the case worker they had been dealing with. Ric wasn’t sure he wanted to open the letter and find out that it was bad news after all but he knew that he couldn’t expect Jenna to open it either. Instead he took a deep breath and opened the letter, his eyes skimming the text and as he learned that they had been approved to adopt Jed at last he felt his eyes sting with tears. Without even thinking about it he found Jenna and told her the news, still hardly able to believe it. They hadn’t told the kids that they were looking into it in case it didn’t work out but now they had an answer at long last and with Jenna’s hand in his they made their way to Jed’s room and Ric knocked on the door. “Hey Jed. Do you have a minute to talk?” he asked, hoping that the boy wasn’t in a rush to go out. JED SALTZMAN

– I freed myself from words never said –
Jed often thought of how his life would have turned out if he had stayed with the pack after taking his father's life. Would they have welcomed him as their alpha? Or would they have killed him to take the status back from the hands of a kid who was in no way shape or form meant to lead. Would they have punished him for the crime he'd committed, or...? Jed shook his head with a soft sigh falling from his lips, bringing himself back to the current moment before his thoughts could consume him whole. He didn't want to think about the past, not when he was finally happy with where he was in life. He had a boyfriend who was a half-human, half-angel hybrid, he had good friends, a pack, and a family back at home that replaced the shitty one he had before.
Jed was truly one of the lucky ones.
Jed blinked out of his thoughts to bring himself back to the current moment. He was currently sitting on the bed with his laptop on his lap, looking up a few things regarding angels and demons, mainly because he wanted to learn more about them. Ben was an angel, no? Or, at least, half-angel. But he was still an angel, regardless. Jed tapped his pen against his lips before he started writing a few more things down on the notebook that was resting beside him on the bed and paused for a moment when he heard a knock on the door which seemed to bring his attention to the door where he found Jenna and Alaric. "Oh, hey guys." Jed greeted with a soft smile beginning to form on his lips already and when Ric asked him if he had a minute, he picked his laptop off his lap to let it rest next to him on his bed. "Yeah, of course. Come on in." He replied almost immediately as he looked between the two of them. "Is everything okay?" Jed asked with a hint of concern in the tone of his voice.

Ric had wanted a family for as long as he could remember but first Helen left him and then Isobel made the same choice so needless to say Ric had started to feel like it was never going to happen. Meeting Jenna had changed everything, she, Elena and Jeremy had all welcomed him into their little family and they had taken it in their stride when he learned about Kyle and Abby. They had supported him through it all and Ric was always going to be grateful to them for that. Taking Jed in was only meant to be a temporary thing since Ric hadn’t really known how to help the boy after everything that he had gone through but he had become family to all of them and that hadn’t changed when the girls came along. Now Ric had two sets of memories of the time during the girls’ childhood, he remembered Jed and the others being there to help look after them while they were babies and he also remembered all of them growing up alongside the girls. It was crazy and a little messy but he couldn’t deny that he loved his family and he knew that he would do anything for them, for any of them. The idea of adopting Jed wasn’t something that he and Jenna had taken lightly, they’d hit a lot of roadblocks along the way and it was true that they hadn’t mentioned it to any of the kids but that was because they hadn’t wanted to let any of them down if it didn’t work out, least of all Jed. Ric knew that the boy deserved so much better than that but now they finally had an answer so it was time to finally tell Jed and see if becoming an official part of their family was something that he would even want. Giving Jenna’s hand a gentle squeeze, Ric took a deep breath before heading into the room when Jed gave them the go ahead. “Researching angels again?” Ric asked with a knowing smile forming on his face as he looked over at Jed. He really was happy that the boy had found someone who made him feel so happy and even though Ric had had his reservations about Ben at first he seemed like a good guy so as long as he didn’t end up hurting Jed then Ric knew that he wasn’t going to have a problem with them being together. “Everything’s pretty great actually, at least we hope you’ll think so,” he nodded. “You know we’ve loved having you here with us, don’t you?” he asked, needing to make sure. Jed wasn’t related to them by blood but he was still family just as much as any of them were. “We’ve been looking into whether we could make this permanent but we didn’t want to say anything until we knew for sure,” he continued, glancing over at Jenna for a moment before turning his attention back to Jed. “We’re know you’re not a kid anymore and you’re able to look out for yourself but a while back we started looking into whether or not we would be able to adopt you. Something from my past has made it difficult but we heard today that we’ve been approved and there’s a hearing coming up that it ours if we want it, if you want it,” he explained, feeling like his heart was going to hammer out of his chest as he spoke. “If it’s not what you want then that’s okay, it won’t change the way we feel about you. You’re already our son and that is never going to change but this needs to be your decision too,” he added as he looked over at Jed. “If you need some time that’s okay, you don’t have to decide right away.”JED SALTZMAN

– I freed myself from words never said –
Jed glanced over at his laptop with a chuckle falling from his lips not long after. “Yeah, this time, it’s not so I know if I can handle punching an angel.” He pointed out with a half-smile resting on his lips. “It’s just so that I can learn more about Ben.” He added a moment later with the same half-smile still resting on his lips. Jed turned on his bed a little so that he could face Ric and Jenna better, his eyes focused on both of them as he listened carefully to Ric. “This sounds like it’s going to be great news. Hit me with it.” Jed looked excited from the way there was a gleam in his eyes as he looked at them with a half-smile resting on his lips.
Ric’s question made his expression turn thoughtful for a moment before he immediately nodded his head a few times. “Yeah, of course.” Jed answered almost immediately, they had never once treated him badly. They took good care of him and he was incredibly lucky to be a part of this family. Jed’s brows quirked up as a surprised look momentarily took over his features when he came to the realization that Ric and Jenna wanted to make his stay with the Saltzman family permanent. Jed blinked a few times as that surprised look slowly but surely eased away as he continued listening to Ric. They wanted him to be a part of their family, officially. They wanted to adopt him. The realization was more than enough to fill his heart with a type of happiness he can’t tell when was the last time he’d experienced it.
“I would love to be a part of this family, officially. I know that I’ve been a part of this family ever since you took me in, but I would love to make it official.” Jed said with a quick nod of his head following, his eyes filling with unshed tears. “You guys showed me what it’s like to belong to a good family that loves you unconditionally without waiting for something in return.” Jed looked between Jenna and Alaric with the same smile still on his lips. “I gave you guys such a hard time at first, but you still didn’t give up on me. You never treated me any differently. You guys have been amazing. I’m really thankful that you exist in my life. So of course I want it.”

“Glad to hear it,” Ric chuckled as Jed said that this time he wasn’t trying to find out if he would be able to punch an angel. “You really like him, don’t you?” he asked, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Jed. Ric knew that Jed had been through so much over the course of his life already so he really was happy that he had found someone that he felt this way about. He had suspected that Jed had taken a liking to Ben from the very first day they found him but he hadn’t realised just how deep it went at first. Now, however, he wouldn’t be surprised if it had been love at first sight for the two of them just like it had been for him with Jenna and he was glad that Jed had found someone like that after all. He had come so far from being the scared boy he had brought home all those years ago, Jed had grown up a lot since then and Ric couldn’t deny that he was proud of him for that. “Hopefully you’ll think it is,” he nodded, his smile widening as he realised just how excited Jed seemed by it already. Whether he would still feel that way when they told him that they had been approved to adopt him Ric had no idea but he knew that there was only one way to find out. Nodding as Jed confirmed that he knew they had loved having him live with them. A part of Ric realised that Jed could have taken that the wrong way and thought that they didn’t want him any longer but thankfully he seemed to trust them enough to know that was never going to happen. He really was their son and Ric knew that they would respect Jed’s decision if he decided that it wasn’t what he wanted but he hoped that it would be. Ric could see that Jed was surprised when he said that they wanted him to live with them permanently, Ric had never liked having it hanging over their head that Jed could be taken away from them at any moment and even though he wasn’t a kid any longer that worry was still there. The road to get to this point had been a really long one but now they had finally been approved so talking to Jed and then the rest of the kids was the last step. “You would?” he asked, hardly able to believe what he was hearing and his eyes drifted to Jenna for a moment to see whether she was just as surprised as he was. Seeing the tears that formed in Jed’s eyes was enough to make Ric’s heart ache and a soft smile touched his lips. “We never would have given up on you. We knew you were a good kid who had just found himself in a bad situation but you’ve changed so much since then and we’re so proud of you for it,” Ric assured him. “Get over here,” he said, holding a hand out to Jed to help him to his feet so that they could pull him into a hug. “We’ll talk to the others, file the paperwork and tell the case worker we want the hearing date so we can make it official,” he said, still hardly able to believe that this was actually happening. “They’ll issue a new birth certificate for you that will have our names on there as your parents and they’ll probably ask if you want to change your surname to ours but that will be completely your decision. We’ll support you either way.”JED SALTZMAN

Glad to hear it, You really like him, don’t you?
Jed felt a soft smile tug at the corner of his lips as he slowly nodded his head. "Yeah. I really do." He admitted in a soft voice, meaning every last bit of it. Jed liked Ben a lot and he was pretty sure that he spent most of his day thinking about him - if not all of it. He was what people nowadays call whipped.
You would? We never would have given up on you. We knew you were a good kid who had just found himself in a bad situation but you’ve changed so much since then and we’re so proud of you for it,
"Of course, I would." Jed said almost immediately, his attention moving to Jenna who looked shocked at first before she started smiling which was pretty infectious to the point where Jed found himself smiling too. His attention moved to settle on Ric once again, his words immediately making Jed's lips stretch to form a grin. "Thank you. That means a lot to me." Hearing Ric say that meant a lot to Jed because he was always treated like a disappointment by his own father and now... Now he felt like he was finally enough, his own hard efforts were finally recognized and that meant a lot to him.
Get over here, We’ll talk to the others, file the paperwork and tell the case worker we want the hearing date so we can make it official,
Jed got off the bed almost immediately, his hand reaching out to grab Ric's own before he stepped forward to hug both of them, Jenna almost immediately returning the hug. "I love you guys." Jed whispered as he closed his eyes for a moment to enjoy the hug. Jed wondered if he was dreaming right now because this was everything that Jed had ever wanted. Jed leaned back from the hug not long after, wiping his tears away with the back of his hand. "Perfect." Jed said with a soft smile resting on his lips.
They’ll issue a new birth certificate for you that will have our names on there as your parents and they’ll probably ask if you want to change your surname to ours but that will be completely your decision. We’ll support you either way.
Oh. Change his surname... His surname brought him a lot of pain. Being a Tien had been nothing but torture for Jed. The loss of his mother and the abusive behavior of his own father who always saw him as a failure. His father had almost made him murder his own best friend to activate his curse.
"Um..." Jed's brows pinched together in a small frown. "If I'm being honest, being a Tien has been nothing but painful." Jed admitted, his voice still remaining soft. "I don't think I want to have that name anymore." Jed added a moment later, his eyes lifting to settle on Ric first then he looked at Jenna. "I think I know exactly what my decision will be." Jed said a moment later with a soft smile forming on his lips.

It was easy for Ric to look at Jed and still see the scared boy he had found in the woods after his first full moon but Ric knew that the boy really had come so far since then. He had settled in at the school and found his feet as an Alpha and slowly but surely Ric had seen his confidence grow. Ric really was proud of the young man that Jed had become and he was glad that he had found someone who could make him happy the way that Ben clearly did. “We’re both really happy for you, you deserve it,” Ric said gently. “You seemed quite taken with Ben the day we found him.” That had surprised Ric at first since he still recalled the trouble that Jed had had letting people get close to him at first but that didn’t seem to have been a problem with Ben. He knew that things were complicated for the two of them but they were happy and that was all that mattered to Ric. Ric had been trying to gear himself up for Jed saying that he didn’t want them to adopt him, he hadn’t actually let himself really hope that Jed would say yes. Needless to say it was a shock to say the least and he could see that Jenna felt the same way but soon Jed was confirming it and slowly it began to sink in that this was really going to happen. Ric had always been content with their family the way it was but after they took Jed in and he and Jenna realised that they truly did think of Jed as their son Ric had wanted nothing more than to make it permanent. “It’s the truth. You’ve put in a lot of hard work and it has paid off,” Ric assured him. He knew that it wouldn’t have been easy for Jed to do that but he had managed it and Ric really was proud of him. One of Ric’s arms was already around Jenna as they talked to Jed and he couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face when Jed got up straight away and Ric pulled him in for a hug. “We love you too, son,” he said gently. He had honestly thought that his chances of having a family were long gone and even though he knew that it might look like a strange set up from anyone looking at them from the outside, Ric loved all of the kids and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. He really had thought that Jed would decide that he didn’t want them to adopt him or that he was too old to go through that now but he had seemed certain the moment it had been brought up and Ric couldn’t deny that he was glad about that. “Come on now, no tears. This is a good thing,” Ric chuckled, ruffling Jed’s hair playfully as Jed pulled back. He knew that they still had to tell the others but they already thought of Jed as their brother so Ric knew that it would be fine. Bringing up the fact that Jed would probably be asked if he wanted to change his surname was something that Ric hadn’t really known how to do but he hadn’t wanted Jed to be completely blindsided on the day. Jed had been through so much because of his father but Ric really hadn’t thought that he would want to change his surname as well so it came as a surprise when Jed said that he didn’t think he wanted to have that name anymore. “Really?” he asked, hardly able to believe what he was hearing. “I don’t want you to rush into anything now or say that just because you think it will please us and regret it later if you change your mind.”JED SALTZMAN

Jed was really happy, too. It was such an odd feeling but he didn't hate it. Not at all, actually. He really did enjoy the fuzziness that he felt in his chest and heart whenever he laid his eyes on Ben. He enjoyed the way his heart fluttered whenever he'd kiss or touch Ben. Finally, all those rom-coms and overly cheesy movies were starting to make sense. It all made perfect sense now. "God, I know. I guess a part of me knew before this little guy caught up." He tapped the side of his head, gesturing to his brain. The part of him that knew could easily be recognized as his heart because that traitorous bastard fluttered the second his eyes relaxed on Ben's gorgeous bright eyes.
Jed's eyes softened as he listened to Ric, feeling really glad that they seemed to have seen just how hard he'd tried to be better because that boy with his awful behavior seemed like a carbon copy of his father, a man who was just an abusive bully, who wanted him to murder his best friend in cold blood. But then, he started seeing what kindness truly meant, what appreciation and love felt like and it was all thanks to the Saltzman family as they all welcomed him with open arms.
Jed felt his heart squeeze as he heard Ric say that out loud. If Ric had been replaced with his actual father, these words would have never been uttered by him. The man would rather suffer through a rattlesnake bite than utter those words out loud. But Ric, he was different. He could see it in the man's eyes that he really did love him. The man was nothing like his father and it filled his heart with so much joy. He wondered just how could he get so lucky so as to be blessed with a family as amazing as this one. Luck had never been a permanent feature in his life, it was more like a fleeting acquaintance but now? Now it finally felt like it was here to stay. Jed blinked away the tears as he listened to Ric's words. "I'm trying but you're making it really hard for me." Jed admitted with a chuckle falling from his lips as he wiped his tears away with the back of his hand, sniffing a few times. "It's just... It feels nice to hear that." He'd always tried so hard just to hear that one sentence from his father but it seemed like it was utterly impossible to make the man proud and now just his mere existence was enough and that was enough to make tears collect in his eyes again before he quickly shook his head and blinked his tears away again.
Jed nodded his head almost immediately as his lips stretched to form a small smile. "Oh, I'm not saying it to please you guys. I'm saying it because I mean it." Jed assured him with a quick nod of his head. "My surname... It belongs to an abusive bully. Even just hearing it reminds me of him and I don't want that anymore. I always tried so hard to be enough for him, to make him proud of me. I was ready to walk on my hands just to prove that I was willing to do anything for him. But it was never enough. I was never enough. Now, I finally feel like I am and it's with you guys. The Saltzman family, so of course, I'm sure about this."

From the moment he and Jenna had learned that the girls were siphoners, they had wanted to make sure that they had a safe place to grow up. Opening the school was a way of helping them, the Mikaelson children and so many others like them have a chance to learn about what they were and learn to control their powers without drawing too much attention to themselves. Ric knew that the man he used to be never would have even dreamed of doing something like this, he would have seen all of the kids as monsters but that wasn’t who he was now and he was glad about that. That version of himself never would have accepted that Elena was a vampire or Kyle was a werewolf, it never would have opened his home to Jed either and Ric knew that he never wanted to go back to being that person because he knew that he would never want to give up the way that his life was now. “You’ve really got it bad for him, huh?” he chuckled as Jed said that a part of him knew how he felt about Ben before his head caught up. “I’m glad you found him, you deserve to be happy.” Ric wouldn’t be surprised if Jed’s dad would have tried to beat it out of his son if Jed had brought a boy home but that wasn’t what their family was like, there wasn’t any judgement in their house and there never would be. Ric had never met Jed’s father but the truth was that he was glad about that because he wouldn’t have left the guy standing if he had done. He would never understand how a father could do that to his son but Jed had turned his life around and Ric really was proud of him for that. “It’s alright, you can let it out if you need to,” Ric said gently, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at Jed. As Jed said that it felt nice to hear it, Ric’s smile widened. “You’d better get used to hearing it. I meant it when I said that you’re already our son but Jenna and I have wanted to make it official for such a long time and now we can. You’re family and we do love you. That’s never going to change.” That was something that he knew Jed’s father would have never told him but that didn’t mean that Jed didn’t deserve to hear it and Ric knew that he would remind Jed of that every so often if he had to and Jenna no doubt would as well. Ric knew that he was fortunate to have been raised by two parents who loved him but Jed hadn’t had that luxury so Ric knew that they had a lot of lost time to make up for. In a way Ric felt bad for throwing so much at Jed in one go but he had wanted to make sure that he knew what would happen on the day. He was still trying to get his head around the fact that Jed wanted them to adopt him but learning that he wanted to take their surname and the reasons why was something else entirely and it was enough to bring tears to Ric’s eyes this time but he quickly blinked them away. “You are definitely enough. You’re perfect just the way you are, don’t ever let anyone make you feel otherwise.” Just the thought that Jed’s father could make him doubt himself that much was enough to make Ric angry but he knew that letting that anger overtake him wouldn’t do any of them any good so he tried his best to bury it. “You never need to prove yourself to us. I hope you know that.”JED SALTZMAN
