He should have listened to the woman in the store when she tried to sell him blackout blinds. Advertised as something that was able to keep the sunlight out at all hours of the day. He didn’t exactly need sleep so he opted for the basic blinds. The feeling of blisters forming on his skin was a pain he hadn’t felt since his mom tore his bedroom curtains open, exposing him for what he was. It was easy to be ungrateful for the band that had been wrapped around his finger for the past 85 years, but now it was gone he realized how lucky he’d been to have one given to him immediately after he was turned. He’d never been one of those vampires who had to keep ducking and diving between the shadows. Of course, a feeble thank you was muttered when his parents handed over the ring, but it was difficult to be grateful when they were abandoning him. Nonetheless, the ring wasn’t going to make up for their decision to kick him out. It still didn’t. At first, he thought maybe it had slipped off his finger. Simply just fallen off, but it had been practically glued to him for so long. Then he remembered Penny. A quick review of the CCTV proved his assumptions were correct. He could have asked Teddy to try and make him a new one, but he wanted his old ring back. It was the only thing that kept him tethered to the person he was before he turned. Sometimes his human days were nothing but a blurry dream. A sheltered teenager who was chained to his coven. Turning gave him the chance to escape the shackles that had been tightened around him since birth. Years went by and he was still pretending to himself that there was some way back. That his parents would find a cure for him and welcome him back into the coven with open arms. That dream snapped along with his humanity. There was no way back from this, so he had to either suck it up or be bitter forever. He could hear Phoebe’s voice in the background telling him to get on with things and stop feeling sorry for himself. No one was going to ‘save him’. The bitterness started to disappear in New Orleans. The vampires there showed him that he wasn’t condemned to a life of misery and in fact being a vampire wasn’t all that bad. They ran the city for decades. Feeding on the humans, controlling the witches and ostracising the werewolves. It was a glory to be basked in, and Lawrence did for 50 years. He was swallowed into the chaos and violence that surrounded the city. The Salvatore School presented him with his second chance of escape. An opportunity to drag himself away from the city and become a better vampire, whatever the fuck was meant by this. Lawrence didn’t really know either. That soon fell apart though. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t stick to the animal blood. Hannya happily tipped him over the edge too. An edge he’d been dancing on long before he met her. Now he was caught up in some immortal’s only bar, sleeping with a soulless demon, burying bodies in the woods and hiding from the sunlight. The blinds obviously weren’t going to suddenly open on their own, but the vampire wasn’t taking any chances as he taped the edges down to the window. There were only so many dark corners in his apartment. The owner described the place as a ‘brightly lit apartment with morning facing sun’ and he was kind enough to sign the apartment over to Lawrence. Temporarily of course. The thought never crossed his mind that he’d one day be confined to the nighttime. He stood back for a moment, making sure every single edge was secure and there was no way any daylight could seep into his apartment unexpectable. It looked ridiculous but settled his mind. He picked up the shallow glass off the kitchen counter, swirling the blood around inside as he sighed softly. Was his ring gone forever? Lawrence took a small sip from his glass, his eyes still fixed on the blinds when he heard a key slot into the door. Blue eyes shot towards the door, as he froze for a moment. The only people who had a key were the owner and his sister. He let out a breath of relief when he saw it was Phoebe coming through the door, “Jesus Murphy. Can you text me when you’re planning on coming over? My heart stopped for a moment then” He placed the glass back down on the counter. PHOEBE MURPHY

Classes were already wrapping up for Christmas. Nothing until Wednesday, thank God, and even then it was likely to be easy. They didn’t like to torture their students right up until the last minute – although, Phoebe thought smugly – some were already anticipating when it would kick back in. The poor little things.
She strolled past the lounge area in the dorms where everybody was gathering. ’One last study session, come on Phoebe.’ The whine followed her down the hallway as she tossed up a hand in farewell. Nope. She was not about to spend a free afternoon chained to a stack of books a foot high. Another whine, a toss of her hair back at them. Not today. Not until after the break. This was the first Christmas she was going to have with Lawrence in the better part of a century, you could bet she was going to make the most of it.
Phoebe made a beeline for her car, tossing her bag into the passenger seat before she started out. He’d likely not have left the club until the wee hours of the morning – last night had been one of the only ones she hadn’t trailed into town after her last class to keep Lawrence company. Trailing home, hopefully not with the blonde from the club clinging onto him, although the brief glimpses she’d had of her there gave the impression that she never swaggered out of the place. Not a vamp without a ring, no frigid air around her that would’ve spoke of that but sus as hell.
A punch of a button had music flooding the car on the way through the woods. Whiskey eyes sweeping those trees like the big bad wolf himself was likely to drift out with the explanation she didn’t really want about Hannya. Did that make her Little Red Riding Hood? Ugh. The thought left Phoebe shuddering. Tiny she might’ve been but the wolf wouldn’t have stood a chance against her, thank you very much. She’d learned enough about watching out for herself since her sire had knocked out the door and snatched away the coven’s second choice future leader. Vampires, wolves, psychics – irritating when they tried picking their way through her pretty head and pouted over failing miserably. Magical folk she already knew plenty about – more than she cared to now. All those warnings their parents had given more like a guidebook to a town that seemed to draw them all in now.
Lawrence, innocent and naïve as he’d always been – in her eyes, anyway – right in the middle of it all. Vulnerable in a way that left the pit of her stomach pitching and it wasn’t from thirst either. A blood bag had taken care of it first thing this morning, as she’d stood at the tiny window in her room, studying the slowly waking campus beyond. It was worry, the fear that all of this was going to be snatched away again.
Not on her watch.
Horns blared, earning them the middle finger flipped in a friendly wave, as Phoebe gunned her car into a space outside Lawrence’s building. Phoebe shot a prune faced woman coming out of the building a sweet smile, she even held the door for the old dear before she strode inside. Not entirely without manners, just patience. The tap of heeled boots on the tile as she waited for the elevator to tick back down. She was already ready to go again by the time she reached Lawrence’s floor.
Could’ve knocked she supposed but the key she’d been given for emergencies was just as handy. Phoebe stepped in, slipping it bag into her bag as Lawrence cursed at her. She stared at him deadpan as she bumped the door shut behind her, one brow only lifting once she glanced at him. ”Stopped again, you mean?” she asked, tickled at her own joke. Grinning, she didn’t even bother dumping her bag down on his couch, she just plucked his coat up and tossed it in his direction. ”Worried I’m going to find you up to something? I thought you used the club for all of that. Come on.” Tipping her head in the direction of the door she went to open it again. ”We’re going shopping. You got my presents yet? Doesn’t matter, we’ll pick a few out. For me. From you. Why are you still standing there? Scoot.” She didn’t go as far as clapping her hands at him like he was a stubborn toddler but Phoebe stopped, narrowing her eyes at him. Why so antsy? Hmm.

Nothing but rage flooded his body as he watched Penny take his ring on the computer screen. He quickly removed his hand from the mouse, knowing the plastic would shatter in his hand within seconds. For a moment Lawrence felt the veins tickle at his eyes as he watched the crystal clear video. He hated the fact all his emotions had been set to the maximum. As a human he would have probably have stomped around the house a little, cursing quietly to himself whereas now he was ready to tear someone’s head off. He almost did when someone bumped into him upstairs, as he was drinking his way through the evening until the very last hour. Making the most of his freedom before he had to run home and stay indoors. Now, he had to wait until he saw Penny again, providing she had skipped town already which was likely. Thank God he had Teddy and Cassie. Between the pair of them, they could make him a daylight ring, but he wasn’t ready to accept his old one was gone. He could have easily hidden from Teddy for a few days. Claiming he was busy working or some other bullshit excuse, but he couldn’t do the same with Phoebe. Lawrence handed her a key in case she ever needed somewhere to crash after a night in the bar, or some other kind of emergency. Apparently going shopping for Halloween costumes was a need to rush through his front door, causing him to freeze still. It wasn’t uncommon to hear footsteps outside his apartment, but his mind was too preoccupied to register that they had stopped right outside his door. He’d compelled the owner to stay away and only come round if Lawrence asked him too, but for a brief second, he forgot Phoebe also had keys. Lawrence rolled his eyes at his sister’s predictable joke, “Hilarious” Both hands shot up as he quickly grabbed his coat which was flying in his direction. “You never know” He knew Phoebe was referring to Hannya, but there were others. Sometimes. Thankfully the demon had only graced his apartment once but it was that evening she managed to lure him back to human blood. The evening he almost drained the life from Hannya. Feeling guilty as he held her lifeless body on the sofa, a heavyweight against his arms. Fortunately, she came back gasping for air, claiming it was fun and they should do it again. He completely forgot about agreeing to go shopping with Phoebe. Shit, he would have rushed around to Teddy’s that morning to get a new daylight. Anything so he didn’t have to explain to his sister what happened. Lawrence placed his coat down on the side, along with the glass. Naturally, he picked up the glass, “So we’re gonna have to postpone going shopping. At least until the sun goes down” He passed the glass from his right to his left hand, before holding his right one up to show naked fingers. “I’ve lost my ring… kind of” He sighed, dropping his hand as he took a sip from his glass. The blood was now lukewarm, but it still served its purpose. He swallowed the liquid harshly. There was no point lying to Phoebe about his ring, “To cut a long story short I met a girl in the bar and she somehow managed to steal my ring” Saying it out loud made his realized how naive he’d been. How he’d blindly allowed her to slip it off his finger without being noticed. “But” He titled the glass towards his sister a second, a small smirk on his face. Ready to deflect this back on her. Not ready to be mocked by her for being so easily drawn in by a pretty blonde. “It’s a good job my best friend is a warlock. You might know him actually. Shorter than me, brown curly hair, a bit of a lightweight when you feed him alcohol” He raised his eyebrows, looking over at Phoebe, “Teddy?” He’d yet to confront her about her night with Teddy, wanting to push the thought so far out of his head. Even better if someone could compel him to forget. Lawrence had come to terms that the pair had slept together, but he was pissed at Phoebe for not even texting his friend back. PHOEBE MURPHY

It wasn’t exactly the same as when they’d been kids but it hadn’t taken long for her to slip back into Lawrence’s life. A pint sized pain in his ass muscling in through the established pillars of an existence that had been without her for the better part of a century. Maybe he hadn’t wanted her that deep into everything but Phoebe wasn’t about to sit on the side lines and let it all drift by her like she hadn’t desperately tried to dig up where her brother had gone for years. Sharp elbows, a sharper tongue and an absolute refusal to take no for an answer, if there’d been any chance Lawrence would’ve said it anyway.
He hadn’t even grumped too hard when she’d walked in now and had found him jumping like the little fish that would get caught in the pools amongst the rocks at the edge of the lake after a heavy rain. Acceptance, that was what it had been, and they were all the better for it. The coven was gone, their parents probably already dust, the only had each other to lean on. Well … Phoebe tilted her head slightly, tossing the idea back and forth in her head like she was holding a mental conversation all of her own.
Hazel eyes snapped narrow, amusement pulling at her mouth as she lobbed the final shot in that silent conversation – even if he did have half a town of ‘connections’ out there, it didn’t matter, this was the most meaningful one, a bond that went through blood and beyond. Phoebe tucked the keys back into her purse and shouldered it. ”I always have been. You just weren’t around to appreciate it.” The grin puckered at he teased back, the lack of detail – thank god – in his explanation, not enough to stop the silent ewww that rolled out. Her hand went up, fingers splaying. That was one story she didn’t want out of him, probably a dozen stories if his coworkers were anything to go by.
Phoebe wriggled fingers at him as he failed to put the coat right on. It wasn’t like they had all day to sit around and grumble, they were burning daylight here. She huffed a breath out as he put his coat on. ”Don’t be ridiculous. The early bird gets the worm when it comes to costumes. Do you really want to spend Halloween dressed as Elmo because all the best stuff’s gone?” He was already lifting a hand though, fingers bare like he was a bride-to-be who’d been dumped. ”How do you kind of lose the ring that stops you from going up like a candle?” Phoebe asked sharply. She set her bag aside almost absently, not paying any attention as it dropped onto the couch. Reaching for Lawrence’s hand, she held it up again, studying it like the ring would suddenly appear back.
Of course it wouldn’t though. He’d let some girl … the sigh felt like it came from somewhere around the last inch of her three inch heels as she looked up at her brother. Phoebe’s brows rose, her own fingers wiggling in demonstration that she’d kept hers – shocker – while his own remained bare as she stepped back. A cluck of her tongue, disappointment rolling from her. ”So…” she drawled. ”You got suckered in by a pretty face and ended up letting her walk away with the ring off your finger. How did you…” Oh no. The disappointment had her pressing her fingers to her brow as she peered at Lawrence through them. He hadn’t needed to get home dodging sun rays. He’d probably brought her back here without even noticing.
A shudder rolled through her as he smirked back at her. Phoebe had her hand peeled off her eyes and up in an instant like she could ward off the story she definitely could do without hearing. She let it drop slowly, frowning as he smirked before one brow ticked up. ”You think I know every supernatural in town?” She tilted her head. Maybe she knew half, it wasn’t her fault that Lawrence barely poked his head out of that place. Warlocks were a dime a dozen in this town they … oh!. Instantly she was letting her face go blank. Hazel eyes going large and innocent. ”Teddy? Like the bear, I can’t say I have. So you think this Teddy is gonna be able to…” Phoebe fluttered her fingers in the air like she was conjuring up a rabbit, or a ring. ”You’re just gonna let the girl scurry off with yours? Nope. We’ll track her down and I’ll get it back if you won’t. Who was she?” If he said some woman he met in a bar, one who’d caught his eye with that buttery slick of innocent charm that was so human that you couldn’t resist, she was calling bullshit on the whole thing.

Phoebe was only 16 when he left the coven and now she was a woman. A grown-up (almost). Meanwhile, he was stuck in his teenage body, unimpressed when people told him he looked too young to be working in a bar. He’d missed all the growing up she’d done in those few years. There had been so many times he uttered the word ‘sorry’ since they were reunited, vowing never to leave her side again, even if she was the pain in his side. Now he had someone back in his life who truly understood him. Phoebe had been through the same thing that happened to him. Both of them shared the same abandonment by their parents. Kicked out as soon as they completed the transition, although it was more forced on Phoebe’s part. Lawrence chose to kill their father’s friend. He could have sloped off home, died peacefully in his bed still a warlock, but the urge to feed was just too strong. He gave into temptation immediately, but seeing his sister come through the door he didn’t regret what he did decades ago. It was all water under the bridge now. Lawrence had tried to forget about their parents because in the end, the siblings were back together. Both of them were ready to make up for lost time, which apparently involved dragging him off to a costume shop. He hated shopping. His wardrobe consisted of the bare minimum, sometimes holding onto sweaters for decades at a time. Thankfully there was no one he was shuffling out the door, awkwardly, as his sister came hurrying through. He’d moved on from those days though, leaving that sort of behaviour back in New Orleans. Waking up at dawn to glance over at the stranger lying next to him. Sometimes he’d exchange numbers with them, nod in agreement when they suggested seeing each other again knowing it would never happen. He was a never-aging vampire and they were human (usually). He’d cut through all that bullshit with Hannya though. They were both on the same page, sometimes. Sometimes Hannya was chapters ahead of him and he felt like he was trying to catch up with her, with whatever she was up to. He was trying his best to keep his sister out of the bar as well, but he couldn’t keep an eye on her every second of the day. Both of them were adamant to keep the other safe. “Elmo doesn’t sound that bad…” He muttered as his sister was already making her way over to him. Ready to inspect his bare finger, where the ring once lay. He let her look at his hand for a moment before he pulled it away. Lawrence would rather have lost the ring than let someone take it, at least that way he was saving face. “No, nothing like that. She came into the bar, ordered a few drinks then… slipped it off my hand using her tongue” He ran his index finger over the bare skin, “I finished work before the sun came up. I realized the following morning when I opened my blinds” Penny was way too sneaky to stay around after stealing his ring. She wasn’t even interested in him, only the jewelry. He’d already mentally yelled at himself for this, he didn’t want to hear it from Phoebe either. “Teddy? Like the bear…”Immediately Lawrence frowned. Was she being serious? She was batting back to him instantly, talking about his ring again. “What? No. Teddy as in the warlock you met in a bar and you…” He paused, shaking his head. He never thought he’d be having this type of conversation with his younger sister. Looking back at her he still sometimes saw her as the young girl he left behind in Elk Valley. The same sister who was about to be thrown into the role of coven leader because her older brother was dead. How did Teddy not put two and two together when meeting Phoebe? “A night of firsts” He brought his hands up, air quoting what he said. His hands fell heavily by his side, “And you’ve completely blown him off” He told Teddy he wouldn’t mention anything to Phoebe, but he couldn’t help himself. Annoyed at the pair, but balancing more towards his sister. The one who ‘ghosted’ his best friend. PHOEBE MURPHY

Patience had never been one of her many, many virtues. Their parents had tried to instil it in her, lessons met with a rolling of eyes and a hasty escape the moment she could slip the bonds of another lecture. They’d failed miserably. She’d found trouble almost daily in her lack of it. Slipping from bed in the middle of the night, pushing every boundary they’d put up for her, especially after they’d lost Lawrence, she’d wanted out, she’d wanted it all now. Charging straight ahead into all those minefields. Maybe if she’d been able to look before she leaped she wouldn’t have opened the door of the house to the vampires. Phoebe had questioned that move a thousand times in the intervening decades but had always come around to the realisation that if they hadn’t gotten her that way they would have found another. Damned by her own actions the night the vampires had come slinking into the valley.
It wasn’t all bad though, was it? An eternity of being continually charging in to things she shouldn’t, an eternity in exchange for the hunger – which was manageable. A blood bag before she’d set out that morning, taken from the little fridge under her desk – locked to keep prying hands and eyes out. She’d been set to drag Lawrence out of here and into something non-embarrassing for Halloween at the Ruby Slipper. Their first Halloween together since she’d practically a child. It wasn’t much to ask was it? Yet Lawrence had been standing there in the apartment like he was ready to clutch at the door frames with his nails.
Phoebe rolled her eyes at him, a finger ready to rise in that universal gesture of ’no’, like he was toddler being warned not to jam a finger into an outlet. No, Elmo wasn’t for him and he knew it. Hazel eyes narrowed, a pinched smile below them. ”Only if you want everybody in the club to tickle you. Unless that’s your thing now?” There was an innocent to her tone that rapidly turned to exasperation.
Gone? He’d let someone take the ring their parents had made for him, that last little sign of any love they might have once had for their children. The ’no’ wanted to slip out again but what would be the point, he’d already let someone get the ring off of him and was now cowering away in the apartment in case he got a little toasty. Phoebe inched back, eyeing her brother with a combination of pride and exasperation. Tickling wasn’t his thing then. ”She did that and then you let her slip away,” she said, no question to his voice. She let out a sigh and shook her head, more disappointment now. ”You sure she didn’t take your brain with her too? Lawrence. You don’t let women slip away like that.” Especially not with the ring that was your one protection against the sun and those shrewd eyes that would soon notice you were only out after dark.
Hand pressed to her brow to block out any more mental images – thankfully the worst of them was set aside after Lawrence had assured her the ring had come off his finger at the club, she could sit on the couch without being squicked out at least – she’d been ready to toss the lecture at him the way their parents would’ve done. Lawrence lobbed his own hand grenade though. Of course he did. Take the attention off of his own mistakes to dangle her own adventures – no mis thank you very much – at her.
Innocence slammed down immediately. All wide whiskey eyes and fluttering lashes. That little pucker between her brow as she feigned complete ignorance of Teddy, as though chances of there being more than one in a town like this were slimmer than slim. Warlock? Oh, of course he was. The widest eyed warlock to ever walk the planet. It explained the absolute lack of experience and why he and Lawrence were obviously bosom buddies.
Phoebe stayed silent as Lawrence shook his head. Oh there was that protective big brother she’d pictured the morning after, although it wasn’t Teddy getting the warning. That was a twist. She propped herself against the counter, folding her arms mulishly over her chest, eyeing her own ring pointedly, as though she were comparing their two slips. ”Blown him off? I told him to call me,” she said sweetly. ”It wasn’t as though I said nights. I promised a night, singular. I didn’t know you and him had pinky promised to be best friends. What other stories has he told you? Or were you the shoulder he cried on about me?” Didn’t that put a shudder down her spine. How many details had sweet little Teddy babbled about before Lawrence had realised who he was talking about and had put a block on anything more? Ugh. Too many, since she was now being lectured about breaking her one night stand’s heart.

Even if Lawrence did go back to Elk Valley for Phoebe, then what? His parents would have hunted him down and probably killed him. Finish off what they wanted to do after he was turned. His mom wouldn’t have been the one to drive a stake through his heart, it would have been his dad. He wondered whether there would have been a hint of hesitation from his dad if he had to take his son down. There was a point Rosie suggested the pair headed back to Canada not long after they both flipped the switch, but Lawrence said he couldn’t be bothered to drive all that way just to kill his parents. Maybe if he turned the car around and made the journey he’d have realised Phoebe was gone. That would have been enough to force the switch back on. He didn’t though. He kept driving south, making terrible decisions along the way. Okay, so Elmo wasn’t for him. It wouldn’t take long for him to lose his temper if people kept touching him. “No… apparently, I’m into soulless demons” He said with a sigh. Evidence that his love life was a tragic car crash, not that he’d had much luck to begin. A fiancee who was chosen by his parents and an ex-girlfriend who ended up being a ripper. Now he was tangled in the sheets with someone created by the devil. Oh well were his thoughts on the matter. Now he was getting irritated that Phoebe was acting like he’d let this happen. Like he’d let Penny take his ring and run out the bar with it in her mouth. On that walk home, he didn’t even notice that something that had been with him for eighty years had suddenly gone. The weight of the ring on his finger had disappeared yet he was completely oblivious. “Phoebe. I didn’t let her slip away because I didn’t even know she had my ring. Fuck, I would have gone after her if I knew” Blisters formed on his skin as he pulled open his bedroom blinds the next day, causing him to dart to the corner of his room. Lawrence had turned his apartment upside down for some sign of the ring, but nothing. “It’s fine I’m sure I’ll get it back when I next see her” Another sigh escaped him. He doubted he would ever see Penny again. As though he read her mind, “Stop looking at my couch as though you’re gonna catch something off it” A smile on his face as he spoke. It was only Hannya he’d thrown down on there and that was last year which was a mistake. As though he was mixing pleasure with business by bringing her into his apartment. Phoebe dropped the act, eventually, pretending she didn’t know who Teddy was. “He did call you and you ignored his calls” Knowing his sister she probably gave Teddy one digit wrong on purpose so she couldn’t be contacted. He checked the number on his friend’s phone though. It was Phoebe and she was ignoring him. He tried to defend his sister, by saying she was busy or something but eventually he told Teddy not to get his hopes up. Which was too late, because Teddy’s hopes were through the roof. Lawrence took a sip of his drink, blue eyes focused on his sister as she defended herself. “Me and Teddy have been friends for years. I saved his life, he saved mine. It blossomed from there” He said proudly. They hadn’t made a pinky promise as such, but they would never leave each other's side. “He didn’t say a lot. Luckily we realized he was talking about you very early on in the conversation otherwise I’d have to find someone to compel me to forget” He finished his drink off, licking the remnants of blood from his bottom lip as he placed the glass in the sink, “He’s just a little disheartened you didn’t call him back because he thought you both got on well… and” And Teddy was a sensitive soul, but Lawrence wasn’t going to tell Phoebe that. “You need to text him and let him down gently” It wasn’t a question, more of a statement. Telling his sister what to do, as if he had any say in the matter. PHOEBE MURPHY

Phoebe’s sigh was heavy enough to leave her feeling deflated. Sheltered. Their parents, hell, the entire coven, had kept them isolated in their little valley. No other supernaturals there to distract them, no partying, no temptation. Just good little witches and warlocks preparing to produce the next generation and become productive little elders who would keep their own children sealed up in their tiny corner of the world. A vicious cycle it seemed Lawrence hadn’t entirely broken away from. Maybe if he’d been a little more worldly, jaded, he wouldn’t have lost his ring to a woman indulging her kleptomania with her mouth. It wasn’t like she’d seen the world but even she knew better than to trust so blindly.
The sound broke off with a tut of disgust. One hand coming up to wave any more description back. Phoebe’s mouth pursed as she looked at her brother. No amount of shaking him for his idiocy was going to rattle the ring free. By now it was probably in the window of some cheap pawn shop a half dozen towns over. ”And you didn’t know because she distracted you.” The laugh well up in her throat as she shook her head at him, wondering just what happened in men’s brains to leave them so clueless. ”You want to go into that meeting completely naked, who knows what else she might steal otherwise. Do you honestly think you’re going to find her again when you can’t even leave the apartment til dark?” She closed her hand into a fist, her thumb rubbing over her daylight ring. It’s not like either one of them had gone years without protection to know how to deal with it.
Phoebe rolled her eyes back to her brotherly, that smile narrowing her whiskey coloured eyes further. Nope, she still wasn’t going near it, not until that thing had been scrubbed down and she’d used a blacklight to prove it. ”You’re the one associating with dubious women,” she lobbed back. Her own forays had been far less salubrious, crowned off with the entirely innocent Teddy.
Of Lawrence’s tiny circle of friends.
God. If it wouldn’t have made it obvious she’d have pressed a hand to her brow again. She’d not exactly kicked him out of her room the next morning. He’d asked, quiet sweetly she supposed, and she’d told him to call her as she’d swept out of the room – alright, perhaps she hadn’t left her number behind but she hadn’t promised happy ever after with a chick from a bar as one of his firsts.
Chin held high like she was on the moral high road here, Phoebe reached for her bag. She fished in it, had just a little smug in her eyes as she unlocked her phone and held it out to her brother. ”Find his missed calls on there and I’ll say mea culpa.” And she had no intention of that of course. Who the hell would’ve thought that of all naïve little beans in Mystic Falls she’d come across Lawrence’s favourite.
It was worse than that. She resisted the urge to turn around and thump her head on the counter-top. Teddy had saved Lawrence’s behind and Lawrence had turned around and repaid the favour but obviously it had gone from a mutual ass saving to little finger locking besties … who had probably discussed exactly what she’d gotten up to with Teddy before she’d swaggered out and left him in her bed. ”It’s a shame we can’t find someone to make him forget.” Phoebe growled in her throat, turning away from Lawrence to dig through his cupboards for something to drink. If they weren’t going out and she had to listen to a lecture on just how she’d broken Teddy’s heart she was going to need a bottle, or six. ”We did get on pretty well, even if he’s even more sheltered than you. Did you know he’d never eaten fries? How do you go your entire life without having fries?” Turning back with a bottle vodka in her hands, Phoebe shook her head. Mystified.
Twisting the top off, she hopped up onto the counter and took a swig. Phoebe swiped the back of her hand over her mouth, careful to blot her lips rather than smear streaks of ‘Cupid’s Arrow’ across her face. ”You want me to phone him and tell him he was amazing for a night but I’m sorry, I’m not interested? You really don’t know how to let people down easily, do you? Was that how you spoke to your … lady friend? If it was, I’m not surprised she stole your ring and disappeared into the night.” The bee was in Lawrence’s bonnet about Teddy. There wasn’t going to be any letting it out unless she either did as he asked or promised convincingly enough that she was going to.

Yes, he was an idiot for letting Penny run away with his ring and yes he had been easily fooled by her. He’d like to think that his naivety had faded drastically over the years. As a human, he was quick to trust everyone, but once he was banished from the coven he realised that wasn’t true. The two people who were supposed to love him unconditionally abandoned him in an instant because of what he was. They were quick to forget that it was their fault everything happened. They picked a fight with vampires and not only did they lose the fight, but they also lost their children along the way. Killing the two siblings would have been a punishment that was far too kind, so instead, they were doomed to live forever knowing their parents' love didn’t run quite as deep as it should. It had been decades since that day, but it was still something that haunted Lawrence. “Yes.” He answered quickly to Phoebe’s question, “I will find her and I have an eternity to do so.” It was more of a question as to when he would actually give up looking for Penny. Accept defeat and obtain a new daylight ring. Blue eyes narrowed at Phoebe as she brought up the dubious women he found himself associating with. More like a dubious woman. There had been some nice human women to grace his apartment too. Of course, none of them compared to Hannya. Obviously he knew that Phoebe was free to live her own life how she wanted, but he didn’t want it bleeding into his life in the way in which it had. Teddy. It was every brother’s nightmare. His best friend hooked up with his sister and to make matters worse Teddy was looking for something more. If only he could have warned his friend beforehand that Phoebe wasn’t looking for anything. At least not what Teddy was looking for. A woman he could fall in love with, marry and grow old together. His sister offered none of that. What she could offer was a night of spontaneous fun where Teddy could forget about his dead spouse. He held his hand up, shaking his hand, “I’m not going through your cell.” He dreaded to think what else could be on there. Maybe it would have been easier to find someone to make Teddy forget whatever happened between Phoebe and him. His eyes followed his sister as she rummaged through his cupboards, “Yeah. He grew up in some cult coven as well who came for him a few years ago. It was the first thing we bonded over though. Crazy parents and bizarre chanting.” Two untrusting people thrown into each other's lives. Lawrence turned around, listening to his sister as he looked through his cupboard for another bottle. He reached for the whiskey before turning back to Phoebe. “Yes! You’re not exactly letting him down easily by ignoring him. Surely the best thing to do is to be honest with him and say you’re not looking for anything?” Ironic for him to say that as he would probably be doing exactly the same thing as her. Ignoring the other person. He cracked open the fresh bottle of whiskey, taking a small sip. “I spoke to her like a true gentleman.” God, he couldn’t even recall what the hell they’d spoken about. An eternity to track down a thief and still back the only thing that would let him out during the day…
Phoebe rolled her eyes up towards the ceiling and laughed. She didn’t allow an ounce of the strain to make its way into the sound, although there was plenty of worry for her brother there. Their kind could survive poking through the shadows, of course, some did for their entire miserable existence, but the only blessing they’d had from their parents had been those things. Without one Lawrence was vulnerable and not just from the nasty sunburn he’d get if he so much as pressed his nose up against the window without the drapes in place right now. This town was full of folks who would pick up on those subtle little signs of night owl blood suckers and would do something about it. She shook her head as she looked back down at him. If he didn’t find Little Miss Light Fingered then she would and she wouldn’t hesitate to tear the ring off of her.
At least if he could go out during the day Lawrence would have distractions, someone else to bug about what they’d been up to. Women to charm, and nothing else but his heart to lose. Phoebe made a small sound at that, almost discomfort, like she had a healthy dose of heartburn and not that tiny jab of rue in her ribs. There’d been no promises made to Teddy that night, not really, but it seemed as though one night of her hadn’t been enough. She hadn’t promised him more – no, she’d been careful with that – she hadn’t even tapped her number into his phone.
She’d ghosted him.
Eyes narrowing, Phoebe smiled at Lawrence almost smugly. She held her thumb over the button for her text messages, ready to punch them up if he wanted. None of them were of the sort to render him blind – discretion still ruled, thank you very much. ”You can squeeze one eye shut. I can promise you won’t get any nudies. Snapchat works so much better for those.” The smug croon in her voice might had felt like it was growing thorns butt she wasn’t about to admit to that. She was in the right here, making no promises, telling no lies. If Teddy was pining away from her, that wasn’t really her problem was it?
Only she’d fed the stray and now he wanted to keep curling around her ankles, purring like the kitten she’d tried to convince their parents to let her take in when she was 12. Teddy’s claws were duller but there was a chance she’d still see that utter devotion in their rich depths.
Huffing out a breath, Phoebe tried to ignore the deeper pang in her chest as she eyed the bottle of vodka. No wonder the two of them were practically bosom buddies. Teddy’s upbringing hadn’t been a million miles away from their own, although it seemed as though he hadn’t been bitten and sent away from his coven. They’d just come after him. ”We didn’t chant,” she shot back over her shoulder at Lawrence. Close enough though.
She slumped back against the counter with the bottle in her hand, not particularly enjoying the tendrils the memory of her frankly satisfying night with Teddy was taking on. ”Perhaps you should date him instead. I’m pretty sure he’d never still your ring. In fact he’d probably slip another on your finger, you know, it’s never too late for marriage.” Phoebe winked an eye not so different in colour to the bottle of whiskey Lawrence fetched down for himself. Another swig of the vodka and she was rolling her eyes in exasperation at him. Men. Really.
One last gulp and Phoebe was twisting the bottle closed and letting it thunk down on the counter beside her. She wouldn’t be letting Teddy down easily, not when he’d obviously already formed his attachment, romanticising what was supposed to be a one night stand into something so much more. ”How about you pass the message on instead? Then you can hug it all better and lament about how your sister’s a heartless bitch and he’s better off with someone else. Speak to him like you did your little thief.”
Phoebe drew away from the counter, patting her brother’s chest in passing. ”If you can’t come shopping then I’m going alone. I’m not being left with the dregs on the shelf. Find your woman, brother, because this is going to get tired pretty quick.” Phoebe scooped up her bag, turning back just long enough to pat one of Lawrence’s cheeks while she smacked a kiss on the other. With a toss of her hair and just a little air of regret around her she swanned out of the apartment. Teddy was just gonna have to get over her.
