old flames (with Aurora de Martel)
Klaus was beginning to settle into life in this town once more. The defining moment was over --- he had reunited with Hope and it had not gone as he had feared. He had spent so long worried that she would lash out the moment she saw him that he now understood it was part of the reason he had stayed away as long as he could. But never call him a coward, at least if you wanted to keep your head on your shoulders.
He couldn't help but feel like he was surveying his kingdom. His brother would no doubt temper such thoughts but he could not rid Klaus' mind of them completely. Oh, it was nothing like New Orleans but maybe one day it could be. Maybe one day he and his hybrids...but then he stopped himself with a stark reminder that right now those hybrids only had one job: protecting Hope.
He would not stand for one hair on her head to be harmed (in fact he would level his potential kingdom if it happened).
Lost in thought, he didn't notice her at first. It was a flash of red hair that felt like it had been dragged from his memories that forced his attention to the present. He stood there for a moment, reveling in the fact that this was no memory. This was her in the flesh. He had heard the rumors but with his abrupt departure to Europe, he had not had the chance to see them through.
No time like the present.
Klaus moved with purpose, following that red hair until he was able to reach out and actually touch her. He could not help himself. His fingers traced across her shoulder blades to catch her attention. "Aurora, I was wondering when our paths would cross. It turns out it would be midday on a Tuesday." He had a multitude of feelings running through him all stemming from that final moment he had seen her.
The moment she broke his heart.

The excitement soared through her body as she walked down the street, balancing on giddy. Damien had promised to take her somewhere over Halloween weekend, but her only clue was to wear black attire. As always, her mind was racing with ideas. Thoughts bounced around as she hurried along the sidewalk. Was this their first real date? Instead of bumping into one another with a corpse between them. A death caused by Aurora. Times had changed though. On a typical Saturday night, you wouldn’t find females dressed in their best cocktail dresses, rather their most revealing outfits. Showing the men what they had on offer before lurking them back into the bedroom. Some of the shops in town mirrored that desired effect. She ran her fingers over the small piece of fabric that was hanging off the rail. That was designed to cover her? She let the fabric tumble from her hand as she turned to leave the shop. At least she didn’t have to explain to Tristan where she was going. She hated lying to him, but she wasn’t going to let slip about the reaper. Lucien was brought to his knees for loving Aurora, she wasn’t going to let the same thing happen to Damien even if it meant keeping him a secret. Just like she did with Klaus. Late-night meetings and fleeting glances, but Tristan didn’t stand a chance against Klaus back then and even now. Nonetheless, she understood her brother’s burning desire to keep her safe. Their father was long gone and their mother barely lived to see the birth of her daughter. It was just them two and despite everything, she promised to stand by his side for eternity, even it meant sacrificing her own happiness at times. It was the least she owed her after forcing him into a life of vampirism by foolish leaping from her bedroom window. She stepped out of the shop, quickly glancing at her phone to check there were no messages from her brother to say he was on his way back. Nothing. Yet again she had been cut free of her brother’s plan in the fear she’d ruin them somehow. She slotted her phone back in her pocket, ready to head to the next shop to see what poor excuses of dresses they were selling. As she walked down the sideway she felt someone’s fingertips brush against her back. In an instant, she turned around but suddenly stepped back a fraction. Klaus. Nik. It was inevitable their paths would cross eventually, but it wasn’t something she was prepared for. Having to see Klaus again for the first in over 1000 years. “Nik…” Her mouth ran dry. She had fantasized about this day for centuries. Seeing her first love again, but became nothing but a dream for her in the end. A dream that was now a reality, “What brings you back to Mystic Falls?” Was Tristan trialling not far behind? “I must admit this town does have quite a charm to you once you start peeling back the layers” The type of place that sucks you in without realizing. old flames (with Aurora de Martel) It felt strange to know that this moment was coming but still not know how he would feel when it did. Part of him expected the anger that came when he wanted to protect his heart from further damage. But it didn't come --- at least not in the great waves he was used to. Klaus was nothing but an expert at lashing out at people who hurt him, especially those that hurt him so intimately. He wished that he could pull it from his depths so he could show her why those who had hurt him should be afraid but he couldn't quite muster it.
(and that made him angry with himself, never a healthy place to be)
"Aurora," he said, his tone matching hers in a sense. He then steeled himself to actually deal with the conversation that was about to occur. First he glanced around the town, looking for the charm that she spoke of. He didn't see it. His connection to Mystic Falls was more primal. A connection to his past, his family. It was why he held onto to it and attempted to make it his. If he didn't have those things, he would have no doubt fled back to New Orleans to try to hold onto what he had once felt there. "My family --- this is where we are from. Only of course, it did not have those charms you refer to a millennia ago. It was more primitive and if I am being honest, I much preferred it to the boring version you see today." No doubt that came with the knowledge that his family was together even if that meant he had to endure Mikael's abuse.
He tilted his head just a little to take her in, so familiar yet also so foreign to him too. She looked much the same as she once had but he knew that the centuries between their time together and now had chanced her just as it had changed him. "I believe the better question would be why are you here, Aurora?"

The expression painted across Klaus’ face when she called him a monster not worthy of love was something that had haunted her for centuries. The heartbreak was clear as Aurora spat out words that were never her own. Words that belonged to Elijah. She never even had a chance to explain what happened before they were ushered out of France and set out on the road to live as the original family for 100 years. It was no wonder her mind finally shattered. Tiny pieces scattered everywhere which took centuries to pick up again. Even then it never fully healed again, there was always a part of her broken. Once the compulsion broke she was lost. No real self of herself, struggling to differentiate between what was real and what was a fantasy. Tristan, however, set out on a path of revenge, allowing the family to waste even more of his time as he embarked on a pointless mission. Aurora chose to stand by his side, apart from the times he had her committed for straying a little bit too far into mania. Now she was face to face with Klaus. The person she committed suicide for so she could spend eternity basking in his love. Always and forever— as she often heard them repeat to one another. The place where it all began. Mystic Falls. Green eyes focused on Klaus as he commented on the change that was apparent in the small town. It wasn’t just here that had changed though, it was the whole world. Aurora hated to think about what had become of her hometown. A beautiful piece of land that had probably been ruined over the years. Not a single trace of the place she once called home. At least the original family had somewhere to call home, even if it was scattered with buildings and average shops. The question was bounced back at her. Her mind was torn between gushing about Damien, just to see there was a flicker of jealousy or mentioning Tristan to see if the pair had crossed paths. To no surprise her brother was remaining tight-lipped about why he was in Mystic Falls. “My brother is here. He contacted me and asked me to join him” There was some truth in her comment. Tristan had contacted her, but he never asked for her to come to Mystic Falls. “How have you been?” It was only fair to keep things amicable between the pair. After all it was only a few days ago she was kicking down Elijah’s door threatening to dismember him if he had kidnapped her brother. Of course, he hadn’t. It was Aurora’s mind running away with itself. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

old flames (with Aurora de Martel) There were very few moments in his life that could remember feeling his heart twist in such a painful way that he thought it would shatter completely. The most memorable of them came from his childhood, from understanding that his father did not love him (that he hated him in fact, so much so that he wished to destroy him). But Aurora and the moment she chose to tell her truths to him --- that was also defining. He had gotten better at shielding his heart since then, at protecting it from the possibility of another attempt to smash it.
Seeing her here, standing in front of him looking just as vibrant as she did the day she hurt him, was a stark reminder of why he kept his heart guarded.
He told himself that he would not allow his memories to so painfully in his mind that he became blinded to whatever was going on here. Her being in Mystic Falls was no coincidence. He had stopped believing in those long ago. Her answer to his question was telling. "Tristan is in Mystic Falls?" he mused, raising an eyebrow at the idea. He had never liked Aurora's brother and that went beyond Tristan's obvious possessive nature of his sister. There was something in that little twerp that made him someone to be cautious of. Klaus had enough things on his plate without him worrying about the sudden appearance of Tristan de Martel. "What about our little friend, Lucien? Did he tag along as well?" He wished to know the full scope of the situation. Given that they had spent a century together believing they were someone other then themselves, he could understand why they might be a little testy.
"As for how I am? That's quite a question considering it has been over a thousand years since I last laid eyes on you. There is much I could tell you that would explain my answer but I guess I will settle with I am happy, Aurora. Truly." He looked at her expectantly. "And you?" He had a great many expectations for her answer. Did he want her to happy or did he want to suffer during their time apart?

Wherever Tristan was, Aurora would be looming somewhere close by. “Did Elijah not tell you we were in town?” She found this surprising, assuming he would be quick to run and telling Klaus the De Martel’s were back. Only Tristan came with vengeance though. “Lucien is otherwise engaged” There was only one thing she would ever agree with the Mikaelson’s about. Family was the key to surviving in this world. Her brother had spent centuries protecting his younger sister, sometimes in unconventional ways. Places where she’d be locked away for months on end as doctors tried to cure her. Sometimes she’d humour the doctors, other times she’d rip their throat out for even laying a finger on her. The De Martel’s found themselves in a vicious cycle that had been turning for over 1000 years now. She had tried to break it a number of times, but guilt always brought her back to Tristan. She chose to become a vampire, however, Tristan didn’t. If it wasn’t for Aurora falling in love with Klaus the pair would have lived out happy human days. Even Lucien could have survived. There were times she tried to deflect the blame onto Lucien, accusing him of being the one inviting the Mikaelson’s into their home. She should have ignored those fleeting glances from Klaus, but she was yearning for love. The same love Lucien could have offered her, but she had no interest in the stable boy. It was only Klaus. “I am happy”— his answer stirred an irritation in her. Obviously, he was happy. Surrounded by his family, even a little miracle child. “A thousand years indeed” Only the world around them had aged as the two remained young. The pair looked exactly the same since the day they parted in the most heartbreaking way. “Life has been precarious, but I guess I have your brother to thank for that” The compulsion was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Broke her mind. She quickly took a step forward towards Klaus, edging forward slightly as she spoke “I spent a hundred years running from your wicked father. The three of us lived in fear and for what? So you and your siblings could roam the earth freely” Teeth dug down into her tongue, as she retracted. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

old flames (with Aurora de Martel) "He mentioned it in passing," Klaus deflected. He mentioned Aurora because he knew that Klaus would react. But Tristan's name had not been uttered. It was possible that Elijah had not known in that moment. Or perhaps he was just trying to keep Klaus from panicking. Elijah knew how paranoid his brother could be. "But I have been away, you see. News of Mystic Falls trickled in every now and then. My brother and I mostly talked of family." Of Hope. He had only wanted to talk of his daughter, to ensure that she was all right. Had he heard anything that made him think otherwise, Klaus would have been home a lot sooner than now.
Still, he had an idea that she was there and knew where ever she was, Tristan would not be far behind. Ever the protective brother. Ever the obsessive waste of space. He did not look forward to dealing with him.
But her? Klaus couldn't quite figure out his thoughts on that one.
He would not deny (only to himself) that seeing her stirred memories in him --- ones that he was not opposed to remembering even if they were part of a path that had ended with her grinding his heart under her heel. She had captivated him easily and that was not something that he could ignore even centuries later.
When she stepped towards him, he saw something in the way she looked at him and soon recognized it as a long simmering anger. His family's crimes against hers were obviously a sore spot still. "You were granted immortality, Aurora. A century seems like a small price to pay," he quipped, quick to close down any attempts to guilt him. He never dealt well with guilt. He tended to ruminate over it until he could no longer do anything but lash out. It was easier for him to repel it immediately. "You are still living, which means you were clever enough to escape Mikael's wrath. I am sorry that you were collateral damage but surely that century cannot compare to the life you have lead since." It was hypocritical of him to tell her not to dwell on one element of her past when that was what he did on a regular basis. "You always knew how to enjoy yourself, Aurora. You were good at roping others in to help you along the way even if you cared little for them." She might still have some power over him, small as it was but he was not going to forget what she had said to him the last time they were face to face.

Mostly talk of family? The De Martel’s were not worth talking about in their household. Aurora begged to differ though. They had been nothing but a thorn in Mikaelson’s side, especially Tristan in Elijah’s. He was quick to step in and take over as leader of the Strix when Elijah decided he was bored of his little sired vampires. His brother was the one to lead the way for the group, causing a ripple of disliking towards Elijah from the Strixs. Something Aurora was happy to add fuel to, painting the original in an awful light. A light she had never painted Klaus in, despite her brother doing so on various occasions. She often nodded along with Tristan’s comments, but never gave her own opinion on the matter. It was hard to speak ill of the man who was the first to take her heart. The man who had left an imprint on her life, one which she had spent years trying to wash away furiously. Now she had Damien. A sweet distraction from all of this. The feud between the Mikealsons and the De Martel’s (and Lucien of course). When she was with him all her problems faded. As expected, there was no acknowledgement of his wrongdoing. Klaus could never accept that maybe, just maybe, he and his family had done something wrong. Instead, they dressed it up with their burning desire to protect each other. “A small price?” She exclaimed, trying to keep her voice low in public, yet that never stopped her before. “If only it was that. Your brother’s compulsion nearly broke me. It took away my sanity” Perhaps she could have coped with having a hundred years taken from her, but it was more than that. “What kind of life do you suspect I have lived, Nik?” Granted it wasn’t his fault for the life she led thereafter, but her immortality was now tainted with mental torment. Instead, she had been a regular visitor at various mental hospitals across the globe. “There have only been fleeting moments of enjoyment in my immortal life” Or at least fleeting months where she was busy living on a high. Excited and impulsive, but with that came the crashing lows. Those dark days where she regretted jumping from her bedroom window to be with Klaus. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

old flames (with Aurora de Martel) Obviously he had stepped wrong in her eyes. Her immediate come back to his comments on her time believing she was Rebekah proved that. He found himself surprised to realize that he had not wanted that. Usually, he cared little what others thought of him and he certainly didn't care what Tristan de Martel thought of him.
But he still cared what Aurora thought of him.
The realization after all these years was not exactly a comfortable one. He had spent decades after leaving her behind patching the holes she had put into his heart. Centuries later he liked to think of her as some fond distant memory. Her standing here while he worried how poorly she thought of him was proof that he had fooled himself in a way.
Because he felt he had no defense to her comments on the lasting effects of Elijah's compulsion, Klaus did what he usually did --- and skipped over it in an effort to push past it. He was a master at avoiding moments that made him uncomfortable and if he could not avoid them, he usually plowed right through them with often violent results.
"I assume that you live as you had lived before you. You always took what you wanted, Aurora --- never bowing down before others even when it was expected of you." She might love her brother but she also didn't defer to him as many would have expected of a woman of her station. He had admired that about her. He had admired the way she control her own destiny as much as she could. "But instead you are telling me that you only have had fleeting moments of happiness..." Maybe he could not avoid the truth of the matter as much as he wanted to. Klaus stopped his slow walk so he could face her properly. "Aurora, what happened to you after we left you behind?"

There was anger simmering deep inside her as she looked back at Klaus. The family was poisonous, inside and outside, taking down anyone who didn’t share their name. Even those they claimed to love. The stories she had heard about Klaus through the years wasn’t the man she’d fallen for. Even the stories that came of Rebekah, the sweet girl who helped to braid her hair. Time had been cruel to both families. The original family had embarked on a path of chaos and murder, her brother embarked on a similar path with the Strix. Meanwhile, Aurora was trailing down her own path towards lunacy. She had to live with many crippling regrets in her life, one of which was allowing herself to be compelled by Elijah and uttering those vile words to Klaus. Words that were handpicked by Elijah, forced into her mouth and spoken in her voice. But she owed him no apology for that. Her life now matched nothing of her human life. Less was expected of her without the title ‘Lady Aurora’ hanging over her head, but her brother was still expecting of her. They were one of the oldest vampires in the world, yet he still couldn’t let her out of sight for too long. Portraying her as a fragile little bird who could be taken down by a gust of wind. “A lot… ” She replied simply. Her shoulders raised a little, tense building in her body, “Any afflictions I had as a human was amplified when I became a vampire. I have been locked up more times than I can recall… is that what you wish to hear Nik? About how my life has been troublesome from the moment I died?” Those fleeting moments of happiness are what she clung onto in her darkest day. Her shoulders fell, there was no point fighting for an apology from any of them. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

old flames (with Aurora de Martel) This conversation was winding down a path that he had not expected it to. Klaus felt off kilter even as he fought against it, hoping to keep on even ground and walk away feeling the better for it. He had wanted to show her that she may have crushed his heart but he had come out on top. He had crawled back from the hurt she had left him in and become something much more.
But that was not where this conversation was going.
Klaus didn't even have time to take stock as to where it had gone wrong. He only knew that it had and he was trying to fumble his way through what he hoped was the dying moments so he could return home to recoup. Then the next time their paths crossed he would be ready for her.
Only she said something that stuck in his skin and pulled hard enough that he knew no easy exit was coming.
Klaus stopped dead in his tracks hoping to force her to do the same. He narrowed his eyes. "Elijah?" he began, the tone of his voice telling. His relationship with his brother had not always been a positive one but it was his relationship. He may attack his brother when he felt it was warranted but he would not allow others to do the same. He would pull rank around him, desiring to protect him. "Just how are you laying the blame at his feet, Aurora? It seems a bit of a stretch, don't you think? I quite distinctly remember your voice, your words --- those were the ones that ripped the heart from me. No one else's." His memory of that moment was still clear even after all this time, proving that it was a defining moment in his life whether he liked it or not.
"You've spent your years in a weakened state? I am beginning to see the bigger picture here. Tell me, did Tristan tell you it was for your own good, sweetheart? Or did he simply lock you up to have you all to himself?" It was as good a guess as anything. The de Martel's relationship was toxic at its very core.

The heartbreak she felt with Klaus was something she'd never experienced before. Like a sharp sword driving through her heart, causing excruciating pain that made her feel life wasn’t worth living anymore without him by her side. It was debilitating but despite that she was about to dive headfirst into a similar situation with Damien. Minus the calculating brother who was willing to shatter their relationship. There was a chance she was about to spend another thousand years healing yet another broken heart. Her fragile mind wasn’t ready for that, but what else could she do. Live a life deprived of a significant other in fear she might go off the rails and end up sectioned. Damien was making her happy and that was all that mattered. Crossing paths with Klaus drove that sword in, but not as deep as before. Aurora had dreamt of seeing him again so they could start afresh, but over time that love had dissipated. Tristan also kept her from seeing her first love, telling her how she should despite the family for everything they’d done to her. Finally, his words resonated with her. Payment? For what she did to him. The tension only grew in her shoulders, her jaw clenching. She deserved none of what happened to her in the years that followed thereafter. “I did nothing to you. It was Elijah” Where was his payment? The one who orchestrated the whole break-up was walking around scotch free. “Vervain can be quite debilitating to a vampire” It was the only thing that kept her sedated the majority of the time until she stirred out of that deep slumber and massacred anyone in the vicinity. Of course, it was always her brother handing the nurses the vervain. She couldn’t even blame Klaus for her being turned. It was Aurora’s choice the whole time. She knew exactly what would happen when she jumped from her window with Rebekah’s blood travelling through her system. However, she never envisioned a life where her demons would haunt her forever. Rebekah told Aurora they were cursed beings, but she was certain no one was as cursed as her. Convinced the blood lust was nothing compared to the feeling of your own mind attacking you. Plotting against you at every opportunity. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

It was painful for her to admit out loud that her life hadn’t been full of happiness and joy. A life Klaus was clearly expecting her to lead after they parted ways. She could have lied to him, but she didn’t want to. She wanted him to know the hurt his family had caused her and Tristan for the sake of their own safety. Elijah was quick to remind her that she would have done the same if it was her family. The Mikaelsons and the De Martels had very little in common, apart from the fact they would do absolutely anything to protect their loved ones. Aurora was on the receiving end of that. Forcing them to run from Mikael was something she might have let slide after a few centuries, but forcing her to break up with Klaus was unnecessary. As though his brother’s happiness meant absolutely nothing to him, as always he was only thinking of himself. It was laughable the fact he prided himself as being someone who can be trusted. Aurora was taken back by his comment. She wasn’t deflecting the blame onto Elijah, it was all on him in the first place. She almost laughed as the reality sunk in that maybe his brother hadn’t been noble enough to share the truth with Klaus. “Those words were never mine to begin with, Nik. Elijah did all the talking. He told me what to say to you… he called you a monster, not me. It wasn’t until he was daggered one hundred years later did I realise he had compelled me” The truth hit hard for Aurora compared to the other two. They had lost a century of their life, but she had lost her first love as well. Everything felt so empty. “I would never have said such cruel things to you” Aurora could be wicked with her tongue, but never to someone she loved so deeply. Her body tensed up at the mention of her brother’s name, “Do not speak of my brother” She snapped harshly. Sometimes it was for her own good, but other times it was to benefit Tristan as he went off somewhere putting together another plan to bring down the original family. “You need to look at your own family before you cast judgement on mine” Yes, they stood by each other's side but she knew Klaus was quick to turn on his siblings if he felt threatened. old flames (with Aurora de Martel) There was a warning in the back of his head. He should walk away now --- because whatever it was that Aurora was about to tell him, his life would better off not knowing. There were rare moments where he wished he could be blissfully ignorant and this was one of them. He just knew it.
Despite everything, despite how their lives had pushed and pulled them apart, Elijah was one of his constants. One of the few people that he could count on to truly understand him for who he was and love him in despite of it.
There was a childish notion to cover his ears for what she would say next but in the end, he stood there quietly as she told him something that rocked him deeply. The effect of what he had been told clearly showed on his face. "You lie!" he called, despite already knowing that she didn't. "What purpose would Elijah have to..." He trailed off, answering his own question. If Klaus thought Aurora wanted nothing to do with him, he would flee, leaving him her behind without question. He was so careful with his heart and would react negatively to what Aurora told him. He would want to be as far away from her as possible --- which was perfect for the next step: having them chased by Mikael for decades.
Klaus pressed his mouth together, his eyes finding the ground before looking back to her. "You never felt those things," he concluded quietly. "You were merely my brother's puppet." The idea caused his stomach to turn and a renewed sense of anger to flood his system. She was right. He needed to look inward before he chose to cast aspirations outward. "He had no right to do this to you. To me. Your words often came back to haunt me and instead they were from my brother's own lips." He was spoiling for a fight now, eager to confront his brother for his betrayal.
