Numb fingers on the wheel, numb heart in her chest. The girl hadn’t been the one she’d been there for, it had been the man. Hundreds of years old, layers of blood inches thick on his hands if the stories were to believed and God she had. It was naïve, the way the two of them had tried to protect the other making that painfully obvious. Leave her alone, she’s just a kid – He didn’t do anything, it’s me you want, I’m the one who’s been going after the Dread Doctors.
The laugh that rolled out now was almost hysterical. Her hands clutching the wheel again hard enough to make it creak but still she felt nothing. If there was one group of people she wasn’t working for it was the Docs. Her entire life had been twisted and shattered at their hands, she would’ve rather put one of those bullets in her own head to avoid doing their bidding. If she knew she was doing what they wanted.
With Harper on the ground, dead, Alix had fled. Hands shaking, fingers cold as ice, something inside of her crumbling as the man’s sacrifice struck her like a hammer blow. Her parents had their ‘ideology’ to blame for all of their crimes. What did she have to fall back on as an excuse for cutting down so many here without that bone deep knowledge that they had actually deserved it? Someone else’s word? She’d had that once from her own uncle and look where it had gotten her. Blood money already winging its way to her bank account and her eyes blurring enough with the burn of tears that she only how far she’d drifted on the road when the flare of headlights shot at her and the horn screeched.
”Shit, shit!” The curse wrung out of her on a sob as she pulled the car back onto the right side of the road. A screech of tires, the thump of the heel of her hand against the wheel as she tried to get herself under control. Last time it had been wolfsbane laced booze that had left her muggy headed and bleeding, this time it was pure conscience. Cracks driven deep before opening up wide now.
She could’ve … Green eyes ticked up at the converted warehouse as she shot past it. Derek was still there, his sister, his uncle, some other girl drifting in and out of his life but she’d done that once and had new parts of her torn wide open with the hatred in his eyes. It hadn’t stopped him from pulling her back together but the next morning she had slipped from his apartment. Almost as fragile as the night before, just without that glitter of glass and tears on her.
Alix drew in a ragged breath, peeled her hand off of the wheel long enough to knuckle her mouth. No tears, not yet, although the burn of them was there in her sinuses, her chest, just waiting for there to be a big enough chink in that unfeeling porcelain shell for them to pour through. No. She couldn’t. Derek wasn’t an option, neither was Rohan. Going to his motel room would be like admitting that there was more of the family’s monstrosity in her than he’d believed.
One option, only one real option.
She’d never been to his home but she knew how to keep track of people, especially when she’d allowed them far enough into her life that the dark cloud hanging over her could start looming over them too. Alix drew in a deep breath that shuddered, let it rattle out before she tried again. A residential street so perfect and peaceful it could make your teeth ache if it wasn’t everything most people wanted. A wife, a family, that should’ve been Christian’s life, not these ever circling horrors.
The car bumped again as she pulled into the curb. Only one vehicle in the driveway, Christian’s, relief leaving her knees weak as she slipped from the truck and started towards the door. Footsteps heavy and ominous on the steps before she punched the bell. Teeth sank into the tender inside of her lip as she waited, sleeves pulled down over her hands, fingers curling in to try and seal some heat in. When the door opened she tried for something approaching a smile but it was stretched taut enough to shatter on her lips. ”I shouldn’t have come here but I needed … I think I fucked up. I’m sorry … is she …” She shifted, eyes flicking over Christian’s shoulder in case, like his wife would suddenly drift out behind him. All innocent smiles and ignored, completely unaware of just how far her husband had been led down a rabbit hole.

━ let death fear you ━ HAPPY WIFE, HAPPY LIFE.
Were they happy? How could they be, Christian thought, when he was hiding such a major part of his life from her? He couldn’t tell Sofia of hunting supernatural beasts━beings━for fear of scaring her, and had reduced himself to lies about where he would go in the evenings and what was bothering him after Theodore Damasca’s death. The less she knew, the better, he thought.
He did tell her about Alix, though. It felt strange keeping the company of another woman and hiding it from his wife━even if it had been innocent up until the night he met Freyja. Christian told her less now, though he didn’t dwell on that fact about himself━just as he ignored the way Sofia switched to night shifts, hardly ate dinner, and never went out during the day until she began sporting that heavy necklace. He thought it was strange━she’d never taken to jewellery before; anything he purchased for birthdays and holidays (at the beginning of their relationship) was returned with a handy gift receipt. And this thing… well, it was ugly. Thanks to his mother, Christian knew enough about the topic, and if Sofia was dressing up, she’d wear a dainty gold necklace with a small charm and call it a day. But… women were women, and Christian wouldn’t pretend to be an expert in the ways their brains functioned. All he could do was fall in love again with each person she evolved into. Love was not stagnant.
He saw the headlights before hearing movement on the front porch, the pink sky already vanishing by the time the bell rang. The lights had pierced through the bay windows behind the couch, decorating the walls with a warning. His heart hammered in his chest━but what could it possibly be? Who? He was careful to keep this life separate from the other, though the lines began to blur as of late, and Christian was eternally grateful that Sofia had left for the weekend already. A conference in Ohio, where she’d stay with her little brothers and dodge phone calls from his parents. They had already called about a dozen times since last week, demanding to know if Sofia was in attendance and if their first-born son would come to visit them. “No,” Christian attempted politeness with a strained voice and smile down the phone, “I have to stay in Mystic Falls this weekend, mother. I have my own meetings to attend.” Surely a high school teacher didn’t have anything that important to do, his mother sneered, but took the news with a sigh and didn’t protest any longer.
Christian tucked a bookmark into his page and left the novel neatly sitting on the coffee table, moving quickly to the door, grabbing his pistol from where it was encased on the underside of a shoe rack. He unlocked the door and slipped it open a crack, though the gun was tucked into his rear waistband as soon as he saw that flash of red hair. Pulling the door open completely, Christian furrowed his brow for only a moment before softening, deciding it didn’t matter how she found him━she needed him just as he had needed her once.
Once. What a lie.
He couldn’t be that surprised, honestly. Alix was thorough, and Christian would’ve been almost disappointed if she didn’t know exactly where his family home was located. Something about this should have made him nervous, and it did, like a dull throb in the back of his skull, but he trusted her. She came to him now, in shambles, and all he could think of was slipping his arms around her. So he did, bending to embrace Alix, clutching her tightly, safely, before drawing back to guide her inside.
‘Is she…’
This was strange. Inviting a woman into your family home while your wife was away was strange, and those hazel eyes ticked around his neighbourhood quickly before closing the door behind her. Christian stepped to the side, allowing Alix access to his home so they wouldn’t be trapped in the doorway. “No,” He finally found his voice, “She’s away this weekend.” She is the cat’s mother. His mom’s voice rang through his head like the loudest, most irritating bell.
Taking her hand, Christian saw how that little ginger light was dull now, though it had once reminded him of a character from a children’s movie whose glow only grew stronger each time it spoke. He couldn’t place it━any film he’d seen at that age was consumed in secret with Dylan and Blake━but it didn’t matter. Something had subdued Alix’s light, and it was strange how he felt he’d do anything to see it bright again.
Guiding her in a straight line to the kitchen, those hazel eyes stayed on her, desperate to protect and comfort before asking an explanation. “Would you like tea or coffee?” Christian asked, only letting her go to find a glass and fill it with cool, filtered water from the fridge, coming back to Alix’s side to hand it to her. One palm moved to her back, lower than he should’ve, thumb skimming back and forth to soothe her while he studied her face. “What happened?”

Christian’s life wasn’t about the hunt, not really. She’d seen it the day she’d first encountered him out in the woods and had known he shouldn’t have been pulling that blanket of violence and danger up over a life that seemed to have been void of it until his brother had been attacked, until his wife had been too and the baby she’d been carrying had been loss. The stain of the supernatural had flooded into the apparent perfection of his life. He was trying to make sure it couldn’t happen, was determined, but she’d seen the shock and grief on his face when he’d appeared at the warehouse and knew that it would slowly carve away bits of the man he was only there was just some whittled down thing left. Hollow and hurting.
Oh lord she knew how it felt. Quinns didn’t allow what they did to change them, they kept the wounds on the surface. Badges of honour, proof that they had stepped into a fight and come out the other side. Evidence that no child should’ve been thrown into it the way she had been carved into her skin. Had that been the start of it? Alix had wondered about it a hundred times over, fingers running over those lines, the scars that even the Dread Doctors couldn’t erase. The first piece of flesh taken leaving room for the doubts to grow.
She was hollow now for sure, stumbling up to his door, dragging this to the doorstep of the house that he shared with his wife. The foul bubble of what he needed to do bursting on all that he’d tried to protect from it.
He wasn’t expecting it. Swaying, Alix watched him frown. When would the blow come to shatter all these pieces of her that were barely holding on around the bubble of dread that wouldn’t stop growing. It had been this moment she’d had in mind when she’d first trailed him back here, it had been diligence, but now all that she wanted, the only who could understand stood on the other side of the threshold. Christian reached for her as she’d done him, arms solid enough to shore up those pieces going around her. Should she have pressed her face to his shoulder to hear that slow solid beat of her heart against her ear for a moment, fingers clutching at the ridges of muscle in his back?
No. He was married. For all she knew his wife was about to step out of the living room. Glossy, poised, a welcoming smile on her lips like the stereotypical wife. ’Who is it honey?’ That honeyed welcome of the one woman who shouldn’t have been near her husband to their home.
If she had some part of her might’ve wanted to stay, to immerse herself in that easy hospitality she couldn’t mustered even under the threat of death. Hell, any poise she had left in her had bled out like the kitsune in that clearing. Alix felt her throat thickening as Christian stepped to the side to let her in. The question hung for a moment, leaving her hovering there by the door in case.
Thank God. The words wouldn’t slip from her throat but the ragged breath she managed helped ease the pressure in her chest. Alix pressed her lips together, feeling that burn intensify behind her eyes for a moment as she nodded. ”I wasn’t sure but …” She needed to come, needed someone to understand who wouldn’t look at her with that accusation of monster in their eyes. Someone who wouldn’t push her away.
There was no certainty of it, not close, but as Christian took her hand, there was more of a hope of it than there’d been in so long. Fingers cold and numb barely peeking out of the sleeves of her sweater gripping tight to his. The lifeline that would maybe pull her out of this when all the others she thought she could hold onto were fraying.
She glanced around the house as he drew her through it. A married life played out in these rooms, a little slice of rural heaven, as alien to her as an actual home of any sort had been at the start. Alix remained mute until they were in the kitchen, her arms coming up to wrap around herself as if she could hold herself together without him. Liar. The croon of the voice that sounded all too much like Ralphy’s rolling silkily through her head. ”You got anything stronger?” she asked. Her throat ached again with the desire to laugh. It wouldn’t do a damn thing for her. Not anymore.
A glass pressed into her hand, the water cool against her palm as she lifted it to her lips, sipped. Alix’s lips pinched together as he settled a palm on her back, thumb rubbing, soothing, those steady hazel eyes on hers, filled with a concern that almost undid her right then and there. ”I screwed up,” Alix managed hoarsely. She sniffed, the pressure building, the dam threatening to give way catastrophically. Was that what she did now? Allowed people close and then washed them away from her in the explosive wash of the nightmare that was her life?
Lifting her chin, she tried to shore up those cracks but her lower lip trembled faintly. ”There’s something wrong with the list. I knew, I knew months ago but I kept going back to it anyway. She thought I was there for her tonight … she’d been looking into them and she knew they were involved somehow. Not even twenty-one yet and she was willing to let me kill her if it meant he got to walk. How do you do that?” A hitch in her breathing, her lashes fluttering as she tried to blink all that heat back. Alix’s face began to crumple, no amount of mental grabbing stopping those pieces from crumbling now. Sharp edges drawing blood inside of her, threatening to have her bleed out right here.

━ let death fear you ━ HE KNEW IT WAS likely a terrible idea to encourage drinking at a time like this, but a drink would soothe her nerves, and Christian wasn’t about to start an argument about morals with a woman who looked as though she’d crumble at any moment. He gave her a tight smile and a nod, not eager to laugh if she couldn’t get it out━affected by the same dreary sickness, it seemed. Christian moved around her as soon as the water was in Alix’s hand, his movements slow and calculated to ensure he wouldn’t worsen the symptom of… whatever was going on.
In a cupboard above the counter, he retrieved a tumbler and a pretentious bottle of aged Scotch they were leaving for a special occasion━this was as good as any, he thought as he cracked it open, pouring a hefty drink for Alix. Probably too much, but Christian left the bottle on the counter anyway and handed her the glass.
‘There’s something wrong with the list.’
Christian let go of the minuscule hope that this might not be about hunting. Perhaps something else happened, but then wouldn’t Alix have others to turn to? He hoped she did, though for her own sake, and not because he’d pass up the opportunity to soothe her━whether or not it was done in return. Christian accepted the fact that he would be here for Alix either way━and what that would mean for them in the long run would be handled later. They’d cross that bridge when they’d come to it━there were more important matters at hand.
Matters such as that list, the things Christian had done, and the broken story that Alix retold. It wasn’t much of a story at all if he was being completely honest, but Christian was used to this━it was his career… the legal one━and he knew how to slowly unravel this tale without setting either of them off (he hoped).
But he saw her start to break and immediately reached for her, cupping Alix’s elbows before gathering her in entirely. He knew just what he’d needed when he came to her the last time, and if she wouldn’t come into his arms or ask for it, then Christian would do it for her. “I’m sorry.” He said initially, his voice as gentle as his touch. “You should have never been put in that position. Something is wrong with it, but we won’t be able to solve it tonight, not while you’re still shaken up.” Rubbing her back in slow, soothing circles, Christian simultaneously attempted to work some heat into her.
“Who is it that this girl was looking into?” He asked, “What happened tonight, Alix? Did you go after the kitsune, the older one?” Practically ancient from their research, but there had been a younger female one on the list, as well. Too young for Christian to feel comfortable, though he was beginning to second-guess just about everything he’d believed before.
From the way she spoke, Christian believed she’d let the younger one walk━he could only hope.

At least he hadn’t forced the sweet tea. She wouldn’t have put it past him. Christian was the sort of decent person – caring, considerate, so loving to a woman who’d been caught up in the town’s darker side that he’d gone out to fight the things that had harmed her – who still believed in that sort of thing. Alix had known he’d try to pull her together in the way she needed and not just to return the favour. Trying to ward off the shock that threatened in a sheet pale face and big haunted eyes, trembling fingers that were barely gripping the water glass as she tried to sip from it and a chill that burned bright in the marrow of her bones.
She wanted to let it shake her apart. Maybe if she did shatter there wouldn’t be enough left for her to try pulling back together again. It would be over and done with, even Ralphy wouldn’t bother with those crumbled bits of what she’d been. He’d shake them free of his boots, walking away to probably try and get his claws into Rohan instead. That wouldn’t be so easy. Between them her and Brady had made it clear just what foul depths their uncle had gone to.
But she’d tumbled just as far, hadn’t she?
The thought left Alix shuddering, the water sloshing against the side of the glass she held until she brought the other up to clutch at it. She could’ve walked from that clearing when the girl had stepped in, handed out the warning she’d done a half dozen times before. The money wasn’t worth it, not for people it was clear hadn’t done anything to deserve going on to that list in the first place. This time she’d believed, trusted, and look where it had gotten her.
Green eyes flicked to the bottle as he got it out. Not cheap gut rot, not for a guy like Christian. It would go down hot either way, the liquor doing nothing to get her drunk but its heat would maybe still settle in her bones and burn the coppery taste from her throat that’d lingered there since the clearing. Not a spot of blood on her, but it had still gotten inside all the same. Impossible to swallow, impossible to ignore.
Setting the glass of water aside with only a faint rattle of glass against the counter, Alix took the liquor. Her eyes filled as she took a gulp but it wasn’t the Scotch that sent that burn up to them. Alix’s fingertips blanched against the glass as she lifted her eyes from those amber depths to start unburdening herself. Like confession to someone who might understand would somehow take that crushing load from her. The words spilled, wanting to end with the apology that came from Christian’s lips instead. ”I’m sorry,” she choked out, fumbling the glass down on the counter before she dropped it. Shattered glass and expensive Scotch would’ve taken what remained of her nerves with it.
For a moment she was statue stiff in his arms, fighting the shakes until they finally took her. Forehead pressed to the solid plane of his chest, her arms going around him Alix let herself shudder, the sobs stealing her breath as the tears started. She sucked in a breath convulsively, tried to shake her head. ”I should have known. After they put him on it just for letting me get close.” It meant there was a chance Christian would end up on the list like Derek but she’d come all the same. ”I need to stop. We need to stop them.” There was rationality in his suggestion to wait but all she could see as she squeezed her eyes shut was the girl’s face as he given himself in her place.
Warmth circled on her back, spreading to lungs that still worked convulsively, shuddering as they drew in air that burned in her throat. Christian, trying to soothe her as she’d known he would. Her fingers wound tight into the fabric covering his back, holding on until they ached. ”The Dread Doctors,” she said hoarsely. ”I’ve been tracking them for years but I didn’t know … It wasn’t … It wasn’t why I was there. It was just for the kitsune. A simple kill and I’d have the money to get free.”
Alix’s lower lip trembled hard enough that her teeth clacked together as she lifted her head. Some pride left, just enough to admit to how close she’d been. ”I might have hurt her. I went for him but when she saw me there, armed, she assumed I was there for her. She was like him, but young.” Innocent. ”She tried telling me she was the one I wanted, was going to let me kill her but he stopped her. That was the deal. I got to kill him and she got to walk. What kind of an evil, guilty man does that?” There was a plea to her voice, a whimper tailing off from the question. Absolution would do nothing to erase all that she’d done in the last few years but it was all she desperately wanted tonight.

━ let death fear you ━ DESPITE HER SHIVERS, ALIX was warm in his arms. He couldn’t keep pretending this was the same as any other meeting in his office, not when they were pressed together like this. It took Alix a moment, and whether it was her rough exterior falling away or simply shaken up didn’t matter in the end; all that did was that she’d accepted his innocent offering of comfort. Innocent. He’d married one of those students, after all.
That was the simplest way to put it. In the end, he’d allowed Sofia to consume his heart, and yet, sometimes, it still seemed as if they were back in his office. An invisible guard between them, that strict teacher-student barrier that he wouldn’t allow her to pass. Now she was the one putting it up, and he had to navigate the sharp waters as best he could.
There had never been that with Alix. She took some getting used to, that aforementioned rough exterior, but he’d grown to find her prickly outside quite charming. The only other roadblock was his marriage━which, no, it wasn’t a roadblock. But there were unspoken rules between a married man and a woman that wasn’t his wife, and those seas needed careful attention, too.
With one hand still making slow circles on her back, calming her just as he would with his siblings after a nightmare, or later when Dylan suffered withdrawals, Christian lifted the other into that tousle of red hair, cradling her head against him.
“We will.” He promised, not exactly sure who the him was that she was referring to, but inferring it was the kitsune. No, that didn’t make sense; the kitsune’s name appeared fresh to her━all their research was new. In any case, this wasn’t the time. “Not right this instant, though I promise that we will.”
She held Christian as if he was the last support keeping her upright, and for a second, he thought he might be. He’d hold her as long as she needed, though, never swaying from that gentle reassurance over her back. He was here; she was safe.
‘The Dread Doctors,’
The name washed over him in a chill, very slow and unsettling. The name itself was unfamiliar, though he supposed its purpose was to instill that sort of reaction. He listened quietly, giving Alix as much time as she needed to get through her story and picking up clues along the way. She and the younger kitsune, the Dread Doctors, get free. Christian understood that circumstances made it hard for her to retell the story linearly to help him understand, and so he was patient until asking, careful not to probe.
“You believe these ‘Dread Doctors’ put together the list? Do you need funds to break free from them? What have they done to you, Alix?” He asked each question steadily, making sure he wouldn’t overwhelm her with them. Christian could hear his mother clucking her tongue in the back of his mind━it was inappropriate and tasteless to discuss finances with your friends, but this was different. The main draw to the list was money. If it wasn’t, they wouldn’t have offered such exuberant amounts.
“Perhaps he felt guilty for his past and offered himself up.” Christian added softly, thumbs kneading into the dip behind her ear and all the way to the nape of her neck. “A man who sought repentance for his sins.” He wasn’t sure whether he was talking about himself or the kitsune, and another relation between himself and the supernatural world only made Christian more uneasy.
“You let her go,” It wasn’t truly a question, simply a statement of the facts of tonight, and just about the only thing he knew for sure. There was a code to this; Alix respected it as Christian did, it seemed, and children had to be spared. “Who did they put on the list that you knew?” And why hadn’t she stopped after seeing their name? He wasn’t hurt that she hadn’t told him━well, perhaps only slightly━but he knew Alix had her reasons. A hunter, close with a supernatural creature that made its way onto the list… it nearly disgusted him before he remembered that there was a problem with it. That’s how the pregnant woman ended up on it, and Alix’s friend, too. It had to be. There was no way she’d grow close to one of those things.

They talked of anchors. That one person, memory, even emotion that you clung on to with your fingernails when the animal you had lurking inside of you waiting for the moon to rise to tear free. Truth was most had them without being bitten or shattering that curse that lurked like Pandora’s Box in their DNA just waiting to be broken open. When shit got bad they had somewhere to go and someone to hold on to.
Alix curled fingers into the back of his shirt, fabric snared tight around her fingers like he was the anchor in a turbulent sea now. She hadn’t needed one in all those months of turning, almost welcoming the change at first as it washed away all that self-hate and disgust. You didn’t give a damn about who you might hurt when you tore out into a wilderness just as empty as your own heart and let go of it all. By the time Ralphy came looking and dragged her out of it some part of her had already shifted – acceptance, the one thing she hadn’t had ‘til she came here. Brief moments of it with Brady, with Rohan, that solid grip of Derek’s hand over her slippery hold that’d lasted until that first breaking had sent her tumbling in those choking waters.
It would rush in over her head again soon enough. Another truth far more horrific than coming close to killing another innocent kid that would have him shoving her away. She’d seen that look in Derek’s eyes, a sickness, a revulsion that hadn’t come from her being a thing but a different sort of monster entirely.
Eyes shut to contain that burning spill of emotion, Alix pressed her brow to the solidity of his chest. A cage to fall apart in for now. Pleas whispered under the soothing touch of that hand on her back. She rolled her head side to side, body wracking with the breath she dragged in. Not soon enough for the older phoenix or the kid who now had the memory of all of that carved deep into her brain. ”They’ll do it again,” she told him weakly. Her knees wanted to give out as she thought of the way she’d left the girl in the clearing, alive but shattered. She’d been there and even after that she’d become part of the problem and not the solution she’d deluded herself into thinking she was.
She had to be on the list because she’d been poking into the Doctors’ business. The girl had babbled it at her before she’d told her she wasn’t on there at all. Poking fingers into that pie without realising it was a great white’s mouth just waiting to snap down and tear you apart. Cold. Subtle. Ruthless. There was no hesitation from them or Ralphy to get rid of their problems. Alix saw herself putting the muzzle against the back of the man’s head, Derek turning slower this time, the gun in her hand going off just as those pale eyes met hers. She flinched in Christian’s arms with the imagined impact.
A sharp breath inhaled, stiffening again before she sagged back. The questions slid fingers into her brain the way Christian’s fingers had into her hair, a slow massage like he could work the answers out of her like kinks from a stained muscle. ”I don’t know,” she whispered honestly. ”Things they’ve created are on there but … there are others.” The laugh came weary on the heels of the faint denial. Money had been what she was looking for when they’d started working this together but now it felt insignificant. A pay day wouldn’t rid her of Ralphy or the Docs. ”Paying them off isn’t gonna save me, or any of them.” It was a pessimism that burned as bright in her brain as the tears did in her eyes.
Some part of her wanted to lean back, to let him see. Her anchor, temporary or not, whether he should’ve been or not, still clung to as she let her eyes flash blue. A killer, slipping into his life and his home before Christian had realised what a snake she was. He shouldn’t have trusted her that first day but he’d let her in and now Alix wasn’t sure she had the strength to back away. She bit down on his question instead.
The selfish part of her relaxed into that touch, the shudders easing with that skim of thumbs. Her teeth stopped their rattle, gritting hard together as her eyes finally opened and that damp willow green fixed on those calm, dark pools. ”I don’t know,” she told him hollowly. ”What proof is there on any of them?” The ones she’d broken away from, leaving warnings in her wake had all pled innocence. The ones she hadn’t let that get far had left their blood on her hands, a weight on her chest that left it had enough to breathe even now. Christian had seen it himself, in the pregnant he’d almost killed. A confession like this between them then opening up wounds in him that she’d tried to hold together until he’d stopped feeling like he was bleeding out from them.
Now, Alix wasn’t sure if those wounds were torn right through her or if what had happened in the clearing had finally hollowed her out like a tree struck by lightning, burned limbs still proudly raised to the sky while the living core had been entirely destroyed. She pressed her lips together, nodded wordlessly. The girl could’ve come after her as she’d backed away but she hadn’t left the body. Alix’s eyes dropped away from Christian’s again, one hand finally releasing him to try and wipe the tears from her face. The cloth covering his chest damp against her knuckles. ”A friend,” she told him numbly, her voice taking on that flat tone again. ”I let him get close when I came here, too close for their liking. Why risk anyone pulling me away when you can use him to shatter me instead. I … I didn’t know it was him until he was turning. I would’ve shot him …. I would’ve killed him. I can’t…” Do that again.
She swayed, punch drunk on her feet, all the strength it had taken to get her here and keep her up feeling as though it was draining away. That half step back, a clutch at his shirt. Derek at least knew the threat of both sides of what she was. She’d only let Christian in part way, not enough for him to see it coming and stop her or somebody else from blowing all of this apart. The wife coming home to find him cold on the floor, the screams tearing through the night and that hollow inside of her growing until that was all she was, nothing standing anymore. ”I should go … you’ve … you’ve done enough … thank you.” That sudden stilted politeness cracking on the gratitude as her fingers slid down his chest, clutching for the edge of the counter.

━ let death fear you ━ HIS GOAL, NOW, SHOULD not have been to pry information out of her. Christian tried desperately, picking at each word and question with a fine-tooth comb, to ensure she wouldn’t get overwhelmed. But he wanted to understand. Not just what she was going through, but who Alix was as a person, what made up all the little nuances and bits of her that had been unveiled to him. He’d never seen her break like this, and Christian wanted to know what could possibly tear apart the bravest (albeit sometimes coldest) woman he’d ever known.
So, it wasn’t money that fuelled her. It wouldn’t solve her problems (he’d like to tell that to his parents), and it wouldn’t free her of this. If it would, Christian could’ve handled that, but he was still waiting for her explanation. No matter what it was, he would fix this. Or, at least, he would help her fix it.
He wanted to argue about proof. There was evidence that the pregnant woman, Professor Damasca’s partner, could speak to ghosts, and that she could produce fire from her hands, but no proof that she’d ever used it to inflict harm on others. Damasca himself, well, he’d been linked to the body of a boy found on campus, but there was no hard evidence he’d done anything wrong. So, instead of arguing, Christian listened. It was all he could do for her now and, sometimes, it was all that was needed.
A friend. A friend like Christian? And… no, he wasn’t insinuating that they were something more. He had a wife. He only meant… a friend who was a hunter. Though, why would a supernatural creature become a hunter? Perhaps he had been a hunter before, and stayed true to himself even after becoming a beast. In any case, it was still someone Alix had grown close to, and Christian could not and would not judge her for it━he trusted Alix, he knew she wouldn’t hold one of them close if not for good reason.
“You would have, but you didn’t.” He said softly. Or, at least, it sounded like it. “We’ll get to the bottom of this, Alix. You won’t have to go through this again.” And he’d do everything in his power to prevent it.
Christian switched his tactic then, skimming his fingers from her neck down to Alix’s back, rubbing lightly until she was stepping away from him. Larger hands shifted to her arms, a barely-there grip on her. He didn’t want her to leave, not yet. He couldn’t, in good conscience, let her walk away like this. She’d come to him because she was broken, just as he’d done before, and she hadn’t whisked him out then. Alix had shown him a softer, caring side, and took care of Christian when he thought he would be alone in the world.
“No,” He started softly, shaking his head, though his eyes trained onto hers. “Please stay, Alix. Sofia won’t be home for at least a day or two, and you can sleep in the guest room. It won’t be an intrusion, just please stay.” Christian was seconds away from dropping to his knees if she kept saying no, but he was still just pleading with his eyes at that point, hoping she’d allow him to keep taking care of her.

It had felt like she was fighting a ghost, a violent, obviously insane but untouchable ghost who had her chained up so hard she couldn’t pull away. Ralphy had known where to fix those shackles on her, making sure they cut deep into her softest spots and every time she’d been prepared to practically chew a limb off to get away from him Ralphy had tightened those cuffs on her. He’d been so sure she wouldn’t run, not with her dad and Rohan still held as a threat. Rohan hadn’t done as he’d wanted though, he’d come here looking for her and the truth had broken free. The cuffs had loosened and, God, now she was left alone with all the consequences of her trail of bloody violence coming down on her.
The gun hadn’t been in Ralphy’s hand today though. Hers had been. Alix flexed her fingers in their shroud of Christian’s shirt. She’d dragged him into this with her, opening up his world to so much more than just a vampire here or a werewolf there. This wasn’t just payback for his wife anymore, it was slaughter. Both of them had their doubts, she’d seen that when Christian had come to her, as shattered as she was now. They needed to get away from it, to kick free of whatever hellish whirlpool this list was dragging them down into. It was through sheer luck that Derek hadn’t already drowned in it. She couldn’t let Christian…
A shudder went through her as she tried to wipe her tears away from her face. He had a wife, a life, one that might’ve been stained by the supernatural but hadn’t been completely stained by it yet. Derek’s own had been shredded by people like Ralphy and he’d still come close to being killed. Christian was a lamb to the slaughter in comparison and Alix knew she didn’t have the stomach to stand by and let it happen.
She made a small sound, somewhere between a laugh and another sob as she remembered the way Derek had looked at her that day. He’d still plead with her for the truth and when she’d finally given it, they’d been torn apart. Alix tried to shake her head and ward off the same thing happening again but it was already too late. ”Only because he got to the weapon first,” she argued weakly. He wasn’t far off the truth though. Ralphy had left Derek’s name off for a reason. She let out another puff of breath against the damp fabric. He’d known it would have been the last straw. Maybe it had been. The death knell of her loyalty to a twisted leader.
Now she just had to make sure that the backlash didn’t catch Christian, or his wife, as it slammed back towards them. She had to warn him. ”Digging too far is gonna put a target on you.” If she wanted to kill his desire to help for good, she should have added or your wife, they’ll kill her. ”You need to be careful.” Alix’s fingers, the ones still caught in his shirt tugged harder as she looked up at him balefully. It would be another life, or two, on a conscience already struggling under the weight.
Some part of her wanted to shift that burden onto him but Alix knew it wouldn’t be a problem shared. It would be those fingers that offered a comfort she hadn’t felt since Derek had shoved her away with disgust in his eye dropping from her. One of the last connections she had left gone. Could she stop herself then or would it be a slow descent into the monstrous? Alix’s fingers felt numb as she swayed there, held up by that gentle touch that was as strong a cage in stopping her from leaving yet. She felt weak, light as a burned feather, ready to crumble to ask and blow away on that bitter wind.
The guest room, not just a sofa. Somewhere to retreat other than her warehouse, where she would’ve hunkered down like a wounded animal, waiting to see whether or not a wound was mortal. Alix braced herself as she kept her gaze locked onto his, steadying herself enough to peel her fingers from the counter and settle them back on his forearm as she nodded mutely. His wife wouldn’t see and there’d be no need to explain. No perfume to waft away, no awkward explanation why there was another woman in their home. Sofia would never have to know her husband’s dirty little secrets. ”Thank you,” Alix whispered hoarsely. ”For … everything. I won’t …” She didn’t how to complete that. I won’t screw up your life with this? I won’t destroy your marriage?. Her chest tight, she just let her hand slide down into his and allowed Christian to show her the way deeper into his home.
