There wasn’t long left before the new school year would be starting and even though Kaleb didn’t have to worry about moving into the dorms since he shared a house in Mystic Falls with his friends and had been ever since they’d arrived at Whitmore, he had still been roped into helping the new students find their way around and get them settled into their dorms. He wasn’t entirely sure how he had ended up having to do that but the whole soccer team had been brought in to help and Kaleb had known that there was no way that he was going to be the only one who didn’t show up. He and Ben had been helping a few freshmen move into their dorms and get settled but he knew that it wouldn’t be long before the next wave of students hit. Whitmore College wasn’t an Ivy League school but it still had a good reputation and Kaleb had heard good things about it before he’d made the move from New Orleans. He knew that he could have stayed in the city and gone to college there with his friends but after losing his parents and going through everything he had in order to get back on his feet he’d known that a fresh start was exactly what he had needed and Whitmore had given him that. He’d kept up with his classes online back in New Orleans and his friends had brought assignments home for him but it wasn’t the same as actually being able to move around the campus like he was able to at Whitmore. He’d felt himself being drawn to Virginia for some reason and he still hadn’t quite figured out why that was but he knew that sooner or later he would work it out. Until then he was doing his best to get the most out of life and he knew that his friends were doing the same. He and Chloe had finally realised how they felt about each other and things were going well between them and the rest of his friends were happy so he knew that he really couldn’t ask for anything more than that. Having finished helping a couple of students move in, Kaleb promised Ben that they would catch up later after the other guy said that he was going to grab something to eat. Kaleb knew that he could have joined the boy but he wasn’t hungry yet so instead he headed back out to the quad and his gaze came to rest on a boy who seemed to be there on his own. “Hi, it’s Fionn right? You look a little lost, can I help?”FIONN WARD

━ a little bit of everything all of the time. ━ THE GROUNDS OF WHITMORE COLLEGE WERE ALRIGHT. All things considered, Fionn hadn't been overly concerned about whether or not the main building was colonial, or if they had an above average reputation for graduates. All he really wanted to know was whether his father had stood where he was standing. If the same trees had been planted, and the gravel pathways wound in a familiar way. However, as little as he cared about the minutiae of attending, Fionn knew he had to get a lay of the land. There was something pretty embarrassing about the idea of getting lost on his first day of classes. He'd handed the last of his relevant paperwork for housing, and had headed out on to the green where he'd stood dumbly for a moment.
Scratching at the back of his head, Fionn thought about lighting a cigarette before he stopped himself. He wouldn't be giving off the best impression if he was caught sparking on school grounds before he'd even started. Around him, various students milled around, moving in he supposed. Fionn couldn't think of anything worse, he'd stayed at home throughout college so far. First, with his mother being sick, and then to look after his little sister. He wondered what she'd make of the place - probably very little, he thought humorously. Nothing seemed to impress Niamh these days.
It was with a half smile, head ducked not to be seen, that he was found. Lifting his head, Fionn blinked dumbly at the boy bounding over to him. "Uh," His tired eyes focused all at once and he shifted awkwardly before he answered. "Yes, I mean no..." He stuffed a hand in to his pocket. "Yeah, it's Fionn..." He clarified, clearing the frog from his throat and flinching. "bUT, I'm not totally lost." Fionn added with a snort, frowning at the thought that he was known without really settling in properly. Though the boy was vaguely recognisable. "You were at my orientation, right?" He asked, hoping against hope that he wasn't wrong. "Kaleb?"

Kaleb had never had the chance to set foot on a college campus as a student before he’d transferred to Whitmore. He knew that he could have gone to college in New Orleans with his friends when he’d managed to get back on his feet but the truth was that it just hadn’t felt right. Instead he’d taken online courses so that he could stay in the same year as his friends while he worked on his rehab and after that they had all decided to move to Mystic Falls. It had taken Kaleb a long time to learn why he had felt so drawn to the town but now he knew the truth – he had an identical twin brother. He had never met Isaac but he had met some of the boy’s friends around campus. At first they had mistaken him for his brother and Scott had shown him a photo of Isaac so he had known that it was real. His dad had told him that he had a twin but they were just babies when they were separated and his parents had never seen the other so they hadn’t known that the other boy looked just like him. It was eerie to say the least but it was something that he knew he was going to have to get used to. “I thought so,” Kaleb said, nodding as the boy confirmed that his name was Fionn. As he said that he wasn’t totally lost, he felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “It doesn’t matter if you are, I had a tough time finding my way around at first,” he offered, knowing that he didn’t want the boy to feel embarrassed or anything if he was still getting used to the layout of the place. “Yeah I was,” he nodded before his smile returned as Fionn remembered his name. “That’s right. I got roped into helping out the new students but it isn’t going too badly so far. How are you finding everything?” he asked. He’d already managed to help a couple of students move in and others he’d been able to give directions to but he wasn’t too sure about Fionn just yet and if he could help in any way then he knew that he would. ━ a little bit of everything all of the time. ━ KALEB WAS FRIENDLY ENOUGH THAT IT WAS ALMOST UNSETTLING. It also made him pretty unforgettable, in terms of students Fionn had encountered in the short time he had been at Whitmore. He wasn't used to the level of hospitality thrown his way by a bunch of borderline teenagers, that just wasn't the environment he'd grown up in. But, Kaleb was nice enough, and he always looked like he knew what he was doing. Fionn dropped his hand from the back of his neck and managed a competent grin, hoping it didn't appear as strained as it felt to produce. He hated feeling like the biggest idiot in the room. "Obviously- I mean, yeah I get that." Fionn nodded his head, a crease between his brows as he tried to defend his own ability to read a couple of signs. "They put that line in the handbook?" Fionn asked sarcastically, his brows lifting and tongue in cheek. "You had a lot fresh meat you had to help find a bathroom, or a lecture hall?" His nose scrunched, self deprecating at his own lack of direction.
"Did they put a gun to your head?" Fionn joked, thinking of how little he would like to be in Kaleb's shoes as the welcome committee. All friendly and grinning, having to seek out strangers just to ask if they knew their arses from their elbows. It was fair to say that Fionn would be useless in hospitality, but truth be told, Kaleb looked quite happy to lend a hand. "I mean," Fionn shrugged his shoulders, gripping the strap of his backpack with a short, dry laugh. "I'll likely be late to my first class, but it's all part of the process, I'm sure." He snorted, rolling his eyes and straining his neck to look around at the various signs towards to the different halls. "Suppose, as long as you're here," He raised his brows, tongue in cheek as he asked, "Couldn't point me towards Farr's Occult lecture?" Biting his tongue to fend off his pride, Fionn reminded himself that Kaleb had asked, after all. It went down a little bitter, nonetheless .

If things had worked out differently then Kaleb knew that he probably never would have set foot on a college campus like this. While he was working on getting back on his feet he had taken some online classes so that he wouldn’t fall behind his friends but he had known that he hadn’t wanted to actually go to college if he wasn’t able to get around on his own without having to rely on anyone else. He had magic on his side but most of the students at Whitmore were human so using his magic without drawing attention to himself would have been difficult and he had known that he hadn’t wanted to try his luck. He had already survived living in New Orleans and he’d managed to get back on his feet after an accident had left him temporarily paralysed and he knew that he wanted to make the most of everything that he might once have taken for granted. Things had changed a lot over the last few years, now he wasn’t just a warlock he was also a werewolf and he knew that he had a twin brother out there somewhere but he had yet to meet Isaac although he hoped that in time he would. For now he was just taking it one day at a time and right now he knew he needed to do as he had promised and help the new students find their way around now that he was taking a break from helping them move in. “Nope, that one was all me,” Kaleb quipped as Fionn asked if they’d put that line in the handbook. The sarcasm was obvious but the truth was that Kaleb wasn’t bothered. He had said he would help the new students and that was exactly what he intended on doing even if some of them weren’t as open to accepting help as others were. “Bathroom, lecture hall, library, take your pick,” he shrugged. “Some haven’t even been able to find their way back to their own dorms after they left them.” He knew that it was to be expected, the school was a big place and it could be a little overwhelming at first but it got easier with time, or it had for him at least anyway. As Fionn spoke again, Kaleb couldn’t help but laugh. “Pretty much. You’ll find that some professors like to put our names forward for things but for me it was my coach. The whole soccer team is helping,” he explained. They were all off doing different things but at least they were all in it together. “It is. Some will go easy on you for the first few days but others will make your life hell for it.” It was always the way, some were understanding that for new students it was easy to get lost and disoriented but there were always going to be those who thought that everyone should know exactly where they were going straight away. “Sure. You want the building over here across the courtyard. Second floor. I can show you if you like, he’s a bit of a hard ass. I switched to Professor Jensen’s group after the first week, he’s much better and seems to actually enjoy what he teaches.”FIONN WARD

━ a little bit of everything all of the time. ━ FIONN COULDN'T HELP BUT LAUGH. Kaleb just reeked of sincerity, but at the very least he had a decent sense of humour. "You should write that down," He quipped back, shifting restlessly in place. There was something oddly embarrassing about the whole ordeal, like he must have looked especially pathetic to garner Kaleb's overwhelming attention. He already felt bad enough being new, and foreign, and just a little bit unhinged with a book full of monsters. Kaleb was just frighteningly normal, at least he was from Fionn's perspective.
"Everything here kind of looks the same, to be fair," Fionn defended himself and every other hopeless slice of fresh meat on campus. "I'll let you know how I get on after class... if I can find them." Fionn didn't specify that he didn't stay in the dorms, for some reason he assumed Kaleb probably knew. With his preternatural friendliness and knowledge of all things Whitmore, it felt somewhat inevitable. Given how quickly he could sniff out a student in need. Clearing his throat, he fiddled with the strap of his backpack and pretended like he didn't feel as if he were being watched.
Eyes widening, Fionn pictured a scenario where his own name might be punted forward without his consent. "They can't... force you, can they?" He asked in mild mannered concern. "You've gotta want to." He snickered, but it was more of a panicked huff of breath, more than anything. Most of the time, Fionn very much preferred to blend in with the back drop. It made for a more painless transition into new environments. Kaleb might not mind his position as Whitmore's golden retriever, but Fionn certainly would. "You play footie, though... that's... sound." He added, in an effort to change the subject to something that didn't make him want to spew on an empty stomach.
"Sure..." He nodded, trying not to look too eager and he stepped back and motioned for Kaleb to lead the way. "You can tell the hard arse you were giving me the grand tour." He quirked his brows with a smirk and settled into a steady gait beside Kaleb, just a half step behind to let him lead the way. "So, what position do you play?" He asked, having enjoyed football back home, even playing a few friendlies when he was much younger and bulky enough to block a goal. It was practically a right of passage, his da had encouraged it, but then his da had left and his ma had fallen apart and footie had seemed a bit childish all of a sudden.

“Nah, I like to keep things fresh,” Kaleb chuckled. “There’s plenty more where that came from, trust me.” Not everyone wanted to accept help and Fionn seemed to be one of those people but he at least had a bit of a sense of humour about it which definitely made life easier. Kaleb had been roped into helping out by his coach and the truth was that he didn’t really mind too much but he would be lying if he said that getting snapped at by new students who clearly didn’t know where they were going but didn’t want to admit it didn’t get old really quickly. The first few days were always crazy but that was why having some extra people around to help students move in and find their way around was a good thing. As Fionn said that everything looked the same, Kaleb’s expression turned sympathetic and he nodded. “I know. It’ll be like that for a while but you’ll start to find your way around soon enough. Before you know it you’ll be able to move around here with your eyes closed.” Kaleb had found it all quite overwhelming at first as well so he definitely understood but he had soon figured out a few tricks to finding his way around and over time he had started becoming really aware of his surroundings so he was certain that Fionn would as well. “What time does your class start?” he asked, not sure how much time they had. Seeing the look of concern on Fionn’s face was enough to make Kaleb regret what he’d said a little. “No, they can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do. You’ll find that some professors will ask for volunteers and if they don’t get enough then they’ll pick people at random but if there’s a reason why you can’t do it they’ll understand and if you just don’t want to then it’s normally easy enough to talk someone into switching,” he shrugged. There were always going to be students who wanted to get on the good side of a certain professor so it wasn’t a completely done deal. “If you join a team it’s a different matter. My coach made it clear that we either help out today or we’d have extra practices for a week and he can be a drill sergeant as it is so this is less painful,” he added with a chuckle. “I love it. Do you play?”Nodding as Fionn agreed to let him help him find his way around, Kaleb couldn’t help but laugh. “Works for me. You’ll be doing me a favour giving me a break from lugging boxes around,” he shrugged before starting to lead the way in the direction of the buildings. “I play midfield. We actually lost a couple of guys who graduated at the end of last year so I could speak to coach if you’d be interested in trying out.”FIONN WARD
