College parties had never been appealing to Lawerence but when Phoebe texted him an invite he didn’t want to refuse the offer. The siblings had been apart for far too long and he was itching to spend as much as possible with Phoebe, even if it meant trekking out of Mystic Falls— his new comfort blanket. Before it had been the vibrant city of New Orleans that provided him with that sense of warmth and safety, but now it was Mystic Falls. The party wasn’t what he was expecting though. Anticipating a crowded dorm room with red cups flying everywhere. Perhaps even a few good looking college girls. Instead the location sent by his sister took him past the dorms and deep into the surrounding woods. As he divulged deep into the darkness he suspected his sister was executing a poor joke on his behalf, but as he was about to head back he could hear a deep bass from nearby. Following the music he found a break in the trees. Beyond was a small gathering of people, with a fire roaring in the middle and music blasting through two tall speakers. Standing on the outskirts, blue eyes scanned the bodies for his sister, but she was nowhere to be seen.. Growing up Lawrence had always been the type of kid who shied away from social interactions, never mingling with anyone outside the coven. Being abandoned at 19 forced him to come out of his shell more. It was cracked wide open, exposing him to the world. Everything that happened thereafter had carved him into the person he was today. Becoming a vampire buffed away all the shyness, but it didn’t leave behind anything smooth. Rather a person covered in sharp edges. Moving to Mystic Falls had changed all that though. The loneliness that had been clinging to him for so long had finally started to disappear thanks to Phoebe and Teddy. Slowly the person he was once before had started to push through, shedding the tough skin he’d been carrying around since he left Canada. The feeding was never going to be part of that, but with a bit of control he didn’t need to kill people. Plus the blood bags he stole from the hospital were quelling his hunger. There was still an unsent message lurking in his inbox to Teddy though. An apology for being such a shit friend these past few weeks, but he couldn’t bring himself to hit send. He thought by pushing Teddy away it would be easier in the long run, but he knew he was being selfish. Safety tucked away in his jacket he had a flask of blood, disguised as hard liquor. He brought the flask up to his lip, taking a small sip as he continued his search for his sibling. As Lawrence tucked away the flask a red cup was thrusting into his hands. He wondered when they’d be making an appearance, “Cheers” The stranger gave him a swift nod before disappearing into the crowd. Blue eyes drifted down to the drink. Vodka perhaps? As he looked back up he spotted Lincoln lingering by the fire. Swiftly he made his way towards the other vampire, “Hey!” He called out as he drew closer, “College students really know how to throw a party eh?” He raised his drink, tipped his cup slightly towards Lincoln for a second, “Free booze as well” He took a mouthful of the liquor before that familiar burning feeling started to travel down his throat. But it wasn’t the warm feeling brought on by alcohol, it was the razor blade sensation brought on by vervain. Quickly he spat the liquid out, “Vervain” He managed to say through coughs as he reached into his pocket for the flask. Anything to wash away the fire in his mouth. LINCOLN CROWNE

She’d been in the street outside of Magnus’ house. Young and pretty, tanned in that way everybody had seemed to get here in the summer. No pasty white skin exposed by cheap vest tops, skin rapidly crisping to that scorched red while they took the opportunity no school gave to gather in their little gangs down in the playground on the estate. There’d been no pack around her, no giggles to urge her on as she’d approached him. Just a coquettish tilt of her head and an offer Linc knew he should’ve turned down in an instant.
It was the start of a bad joke. A bunch of college kids and a vampire whose control’s Vaseline slippery are partying in the woods … guess what happens next.
Linc looked down at the bottle dangling from his fingers, swallowing hard as though that would pull a miracle and turn the beer into blood. His contribution to the party wasn’t gonna satisfy the part of him that had started to sit up and listen as soon as the music had started to pump in the woods and the handful of girls who’d melted out of the dark when the one who’d invited him had pulled off of the road and into the half overgrown make shift lot had started dancing to it. A kick in pulses that he was sure he could hear under the throb of the beat. A whoosh, whoosh, whoosh that had his mouth watering.
Biting down on it left his gums aching, muscles in his jaw flexing as he looked up from his spot at the edge of the firepit. A bit of old farm or industrial equipment of some sort left out here to rust after whatever had been in the woods was long gone. A prop to sit against with his knees drawn up slightly, arms draped over them as he studied the people milling around him. Celebrating in small groups, even the girl – Lyra, she’d said it was Lyra, like the girl out of those books he’d read as a kid – disappearing off into that darkness to flit around like a hummingbird, leaving that trail of her pulse in the air.
A shiver of it, not unlike the one Cassie had given off when she’d stormed up to him outside the club. He’d held back then but … he thought of the blonde, her bolshiness arriving like a steam train, continuing in a way that was almost impressive as he’d snuck her into Emerald City, expecting Hector to stop him at any moment and drag him into the office by the scruff of the neck like some wayward kitten while Cassie was gonna be lucky if she got shown the door.
He hung his head, trying to breathe through it, the beer lifted and drunk from almost convulsively. At the call of the voice he twisted his hand, knuckling the foam from his mouth as the form came around the fire. Not back lit anymore Linc could see those flames painting Lawrence’s pale hair. Another of Hector’s people, but from the other side of the staircase that separated Emerald City from the Ruby Slipper, never should the metaphorical yellow brick road between them be crossed.
Lifting his chin, Linc acknowledged the older vampire. A flash of wariness there in his eyes perhaps, flickering between the figures moving beyond the fire, the red cup Lawrence held, the guy’s face. ”Hey. Booze, music, spooky arse woods filled with things that could kill ‘em, the perfect party combo,” Linc murmured. A little cynical but not that far off base. The kids at Whitmore spent most weekends at the club, completely unaware of what was going on under their noses. Linc’s shoulders rose and fell, a little tightening around his mouth the only sign of his smile. ”Free now. Bought some stuff from the Club.” That he’d paid with out of his wages, bills fumbled out of his wallet for those bottles.
Maybe wisely he’d stuck to what he’d bought. Sealed until he’d twisted the cup off. Not tampered with, leaving him spitting out the liquid that’d started burning his gut as Lawrence was now doing. Linc shifted uneasily, a baby vampire’s concern that the big bad hunters he’d heard all about in warning were gonna start melting out of the trees to pick off whoever choked on the stuff. ”Someone spiked the booze already? Who’d you get that off of?” Nerves tight in his throat. He was stronger than he’d been before, he could at least hold his own against a bunch of tipsy college girls but he wasn’t impervious the way Magnus seemed to be with a glib tongue and a frigging genuine medieval sword to lop heads off and save the helpless brat in distress.

The college kids didn’t have a care in the world as they danced near the fire. One quick leap and Lawrence could kill a good number of them in seconds, but in that moment they were invincible. Perhaps if wasn’t born a warlock he too would have been one of the carefree teenagers. Instead his parents drilled it into him that the world was a scary place beyond the valley. He didn’t even like straying too far from the house after the sun had gone down, convinced something out there would kill him. In the end it did and his fears came true but death wasn’t as painful as he expected. Even if he did want to drain their bodies, someone else had already thought ahead. It was Lawrence’s fault for being too trusting of the stranger, but whoever handed him the drink didn’t linger around to watch the effects. They disappeared into the crowd as soon as the cup was pushed into his hands. A friendly gesture perhaps, but now Lawrence was paranoid there was a hunter lurking amongst the people. However it was mainly college kids. None of them looked strong enough to take on a vampire and there were no bows in sight. An overcautious parent somewhere. Aware of the dangers that lurk in the darkness, aiming to turn their offspring’s blood into poison for a vampire. It had been so long since vervain had passed his lips that he’d forgotten just how much it burned. Tearing the skin away from his throat as it travelled down. His body was trying to heal as quickly as it burnt. As he was busy emptying the contents of his mouth on the floor, he glanced back at Lincoln, silently cursing himself for not bringing alcohol from the bar. Lawrence returned upright, bringing the back of his hand up to wipe his mouth. “I can’t remember…. just some guy” He responded in a hoarse voice, blue eyes scanning for the person who handed him the drink. The red glow from the fire was making it difficult to pinpoint the culprit, but either way, a hunter hadn’t lunged for him. He tossed the cup towards the fire. Probably not good for the environment but he wanted the cup gone. As though the vervain was seeping through the plastic and burning his hand. The moment the cup left his hand a girl was walking past, “Hey” He called out to her, nodding for her to come over to the pair. The blonde bounced over, a smile plastered across her face. Soon as she got close enough he quickly grabbed her by the shoulders, positioning her in front of him “Who brought the alcohol to the party?” The girl looked confused, as she stepped back from Lawrence, “Who cares it’s free booze” Her eyes flicked between the vampires before she continued walking past them. The compulsion didn’t work. “Well at least I know someones not targeting me… the whole batch has been tampered with” He sighed softly, unscrewing his bottle once more to take a sip. The copper taste was what his tongue yearned for anyway. Not cheap spirits in red cups. “Do you want some?” He titled the opaque bottle towards Lincoln, “I met your friend the other week, Cassie? She’s very energetic… but she's playing with fire coming into the bar. I had to stop two other vampires from tearing her apart” Hector hadn’t been pleased when two customers were complaining Lawrence had stood in the way of them and free food, but he couldn’t stand back and watch Cassie get drained. Especially as she’d just come back from the dead after being sacrificed by her coven. LINCOLN CROWNE

Wesley would’ve sold his right arm for this. Fodder for a week, maybe more, in the cluster of teenagers who obviously thought they knew something about this town but not enough. Gullible, welcoming, they wouldn’t have seen the trouble coming from the suave arsehole until too late. Linc doubted any of them would’ve been turned, those few that Wesley bothered that much with were rare, the ‘treat’ saved for his more loyal little toadies, but you didn’t have to follow through on your promises if you just planned on draining them and tossing them into the river like sacks of rubbish anyway.
It was hard looking at them as anything but victims when that was all you’d seen looking back in the mirror when you’d been saved that sort of fate – and when just hearing the whoosh of blood through someone’s veins or being within a dozen feet of a papercut made you so hungry that everything ached.
The alcohol was meant to take that edge off when he’d pulled it free of its cardboard collar but he might as well have been drinking water for all the good it had been doing. Linc glanced at his own bottle, suddenly glad for its piss weakness while Lawrence practically puffed smoke from his doctored cup. His fingers closed tighter around it, his legs shifting, one knee knocking against the rest of the bottles, still snared in their packaging. ”He wasn’t toting a stake around too was he? You know, waitin’ to see who started bellowin’ smoke like a chimney.” Blue eyes flitted around the border of the clearing. If there was anybody about to burst out and hose down the supernaturals in this little gathering, that would’ve been the time to do it, as Lawrence spewed up what he’d drunk.
Now the vervain would go up in smoke, not doing a damn thing to out them when it was just thin trails of smoke in the air. The plastic likely more noxious than the vervain now. Linc eased forward, craning further over his knees as Lawrence flagged some girl – not Lyra – down, asking about the alcohol. He raised sandy brows, offering the girl a half smile as she started to pull back, Lawrence’s attempt at compulsion failing. God he hoped it was from the mouthful of vervain and not from anything else. ”Not you specifically I guess, maybe just anybody here who’d probably try somethin’.” The whole batch, except for the bottle Lawrence was swigging from now and those left at his side.
As he offered the bottle to him Linc shook his head, half lifting his own bottle into view. Beer not liquor, although the latter wasn’t gonna get him any drunker for its greater potency. He traced his tongue over his lower lip, wicking away that yeasty tang of the drink. ”Got one, thanks.” And a raging dose of suspicion too. In an instant he was freezing again, a fist tightening around his throat that then did a number on his heart. ”Cassie came back to the club? How did she get in the door? The bouncer wouldn’t let her in before.” But he had, bringing her in through the rear door with him, practically marking out the easier path into Emerald City for her. Shit.
Groaning under his breath, Linc pressed the bottle against his forehead for a moment. He knew what happened with some of the vampires. Most of the members stuck to the rules, not even brining in their little pets for fear of winding things up between them, but there were always some who were gonna try and stomp over that rule. ”Did you get her out of there? She doesn’t know what she’s getting’ herself into.” The added ‘did you tell Hector’ wouldn’t squeeze itself out. He’d tried to warn Cassie about what Hector would do when he’d snuck her in, it’d only be twice as worse if he found her in there on her own with nobody else there to take the blame.

Lawrence learnt the hard way with vervain after sinking his teeth into a witch who had the poison rushing through her veins. The burning sensation travelling down his throat never became less painful over the years, but at least now he knew what was causing it. Before he was left on a heap on the floor as the tainted blood fell from his mouth. Even then no explanation was provided as his victim disappeared off into the darkness leaving him to suffer. Violently rubbing the blood off his tongue as he clambered to his feet, finding he was too weak to run after her. For weeks after that, he was hesitant before sinking his teeth into someone, but it was something he managed to avoid for a number of years after. His questions remained unanswered until he crossed paths with another vampire. As Lawrence recited the story a look of amusement grew across the stranger's face. It was the same story hundreds of other vampires out there had. Trying to take a piece of someone who was clever enough to consume vervain. It was just another thing his parents had failed to mention when abandoning him, rather telling him vampires were bad people with no humanity. They were the worst of the worst, and now Lawrence belonged to that category. No longer was he a sweet 19 year old warlock in line to be the next leader, instead he was a monster. It was a mystery why his dad didn’t just drive a stake through Lawrence’s heart in their family home. Watch him fade away on their living room floor surrounded by happy photos of the family. Instead they gave him the chance to live. Equipped him with a daylight ring and some cash before telling him to leave. The daylight ring was the only thing he’d ever been grateful for. He’d never been a slave to the night, unlike Lincoln who stood beside him with a naked finger. It was just some kid who’d handed him the drink. Not someone he would have been wary of, “I didn’t have a chance to check his pockets” His guard was firmly back up, suspecting everyone around him, even the girl he’d just dragged aside to try and compel. He waited until she disappeared out of view before looking back at Lincoln, “Perhaps an overprotective parent” But was it overprotective to be wary of vampires at a party in the woods. The area was full of potential meals, but all of them were tainted like the witch he drank from decades back. His eyes were still darting around the area, waiting for someone to appear out of the darkness with a stake. There were too many people around for someone to make a scene like that. The vampire stashed the flask back into his pocket as Lincoln’s body froze up at the sound of Cassie’s name, especially connected with the bar. “No idea” He frowned slightly, trying to remember the evening and how Cassie came to be in the bar. Looking back he should have kicked the witch out of the bar as soon as he realized who she was. One of the harvest girls back from the dead. He should have dragged her out by the scruff of her neck, but instead, he fed her alcohol to the point it had her clutching to the bowl of the toilet. “Yeah I got her out unscathed right after peeling her off the bathroom floor after a few too many drinks” He’d even sent on her way with a warning not to return to the bar, but Lawrence knew it was a warning she’d ignore. Just a girl trying to live her best life. “She still hasn't paid her bar tab” He added with a quiet laugh, knowing it wasn’t something to be laughing about if Hector found out, “I’ve managed to keep it hidden from the big bad boss” LINCOLN CROWNE

He should’ve known this was gonna be more than it had seemed. Once upon a time he’d been the one luring people in. A drink or five, that boyish grin and coy looks until they were like sheep following him to the after party. Each step up to Wesley’s apartment or down to the basement leaving him feeling sicker. There was no stumble home with the threat of a hangover hanging over you, the banging headache would come in the dark if it came at all and most would be dead or well on their way to it by the time the sun came eye searing bright over the horizon.
Linc scanned the area around them, that sixth sense not ringing hard enough to have him pushing to his feet and getting out of here. He should’ve been able to trust it by now, even if he only trusted one – two – people in this entire town and one of them was slightly shaky depending on the day and how much he was hating on the lack of choice he had in this.
Gratitude teetering in balance with the mad. The alcohol he’d started in on doing nothing to help sway it one way of another.
He snorted, faint humour slipping away like the smoke from the fire as he shook his head. ”You’re losin’ your touch, Lawrence. Hannya’d be disappointed.” Her hands would’ve been in every set of pockets here, slipped in seductive slow, fingers curling, seeking, biting if she wasn’t a hundred percent keen on what she’d found. Lawrence had to bring Magnus up into hit all though, a splash of ice water on all of this that had the muscles in his jaw clenching. Linc glanced down at the bottle in his hand, half out of guilt. ”Plenty of those around,” he muttered before he lifted that bottle. No burn of vervain, not even of the booze so much, just that convulsive working of his throat.
Now he’d brought it up it appeared as though the idea was tickling between Lawrence’s shoulder blades. The older vampire wasn’t as big and as bad as he appeared to be in the club’s pecking order then.
Still, there were things he knew that could stick a metaphorical stake right through the pit of his stomach. If he’d been human the beer would’ve rushed up the back of his throat, warm and yeasty, ripe for a teenager’s copious sickness after an overindulgence. That soft heart Wesley had played on damning him again. Linc made a dubious noise as he knuckled damp lips and shot a look up at Lawrence. ”No idea but you didn’t get her out immediately?” The ‘what the fuck’s wrong with you?’ stuck in his throat. Lips pinched together he shook his head, straightening up. ”That’s not unscathed. What if you hadn’t come along?” What if Hannya had gotten her hands on her? Or Hector. Or any of the things that claimed membership to Emerald City. Few things old and assholish enough to want to conduct business there weren’t exactly known for their restraint.
Planting an elbow on his knee, Linc scrubbed his hand over his face. It was meant to be a one off, the warning hissed from his own lips to stop her from walking into the hornet’s nest again. It was meant to keep her safe, not encourage her. He let out a tired snort, waving it off with the bottle as he looked up. ”I’ll pay for it, she’s not coming back in. If she does and you see her, get her out.” Before Hannya and Hector threw hissy fits of supernatural proportions.
A long breath slipped out as Linc lifted the bottle and gulped from it on a single breath. No worrying about your air running out anymore. He could’ve gone years without oxygen. They apparently just dried out like mummies. ”Hector’s not finding out about her.” His brows drew together though, eyes fixing on Lawrence as he reached for another of those beer bottles. ”I thought you and him were joined at the hip … different to how you are with Hannya of course.” Unless there was something he hadn’t seen in the two of them. It had been Magnus’ connections that had gotten him through the door. The youngest of them all, the one most recently hired, suitable for all those nasty little jobs everybody else wanted to palm off.

It was easy to forget there were people out there who made a living from hunting vampires. They were at a college party. Some sense of normality, but the vervain was a sharp reminder to stay on high alert. Lawrence hated it. Phoebe really saw the potential for whatever lay beyond their childhood home, whereas Lawrence didn’t. It was a scary and foreign land that lay out there. He soon found the world outside the valley wasn’t as cruel as he expected. He was even welcomed by some, despite his species. Someone somewhere was welcoming vampires at this little party though. Lawrence glanced over at Lincoln at the mention of Hannya’s name. He sighed softly, shifting his eyes back on the fire, “We’re lucky she doesn’t leave the bar. Can’t even begin to imagine what she’d be like if she was here” There were plenty of young males around for her to swing off and play with, even if they were just tickling 21. No doubt if his parents were still alive they’d be spiking the drinks to keep the vampires at bay, or even identify them so they could drive a stake through their chest. Turning into the very creature you were taught to hate throughout your childhood was tough. It was no surprise he flipped the switch after a while, unable to cope with the crippling self-loathing pushed onto him by his parents. He’d gone from being the apple of their eye to the enemy in the space of seconds. A quick flip from love to hate for his dad, his mom however struggled to turn her back on her firstborn. The naive caring warlock she had raised for 19 years. He was still young. Lawrence saw the sadness in her eyes as his dad ushered him out the door. He tried his best to relax a little, a slight tap on the chest of his coat out of habit to check the flask was still there. There was no sign of Phoebe either to warn her about the vervain. It was hard to shake the overprotective big brother act, despite not playing the part for decades. Lawrence’s eyes shot down as Lincoln spoke again, his voice had a snap to it. Clearly annoyed he didn’t usher the young witch out the bar in an instant. “Well she’d probably be dead” He retorted bluntly. That was a given. “I told her she shouldn’t be in the bar, but she just giggled and asked for a drink” Several drinks, but he wasn’t about to share that with Lincoln. The vampire was already irked about the fact Lawrence didn’t scoop Cassie up and remove her from the bar. He was about to pull his eyes away from the other vampire again when Lincon told Lawrence next time he sees Cassie get her out. “Woah… if she walks into the bar willing, ignoring all the warning signs, I can’t exactly boot her out” He reached for the flask inside his coat, pulling it out as though it was some kind of comfort blanket. “And…” He exclaimed before his voice trailed off. Some of the older vampires wouldn’t take too kindly to a vampire helping out a witch. New Orleans taught him that. Vampires were often ostracised for associating with the enemy. But this was Mystic Falls, not New Orleans. Even his best friend was a warlock. “I’ll try my best” He took a sip from his flask, before sliding it back to safety. Lawrence watched as Lincoln edged forward grabbing one of the beer bottles. He scoffed at the young vampire’s comment about Hector before reaching forward to grab one of the beer bottles. After all, they were from the club. “Nah. I just like to keep the older ones on my side… like Hannya” He brought the bottle up to his mouth, cracking the lid off with his teeth, “I’m not joined at the hip with Hannya either… I should have stayed away from her but she’s just too...” He drew the bottle up to his lips, taking a small sip. He was still bitter she managed to claw her way under his skin, “I was on the straight and narrow before she barged into my life. Sticking to the animal stuff and going to school” It wasn’t fair to pin it all on the demon. Anyone with an open vein could have dragged himself away from the rabbits, but she was the one who did it. At least Wesley had been the only real nightmare in London. He didn’t like upstarts trying to work their way the throne he’d shoved at the peak of his little empire and had been ruthless in stamping out anybody who tried – his parents included. Hector didn’t have quite the same hold over the Ruby Slipper – although Magnus might’ve tried to convince he did. The vampire had his realm above stairs so to speak, Hannya below and the demon was … Lincoln gulped, a faint shiver rolling through him. The word relentless came to mind. It was like watching a tiger set eyes on prey, muscle shifting under that deceptively pretty skin as they stalked in. Some got hypnotised by it and ended up giving her exactly what she wanted, Lawrence included.
Linc watched Lawrence’s eyes skitter away from his on that sigh. Oh he knew how deep the demon’s claws were into the vampire who’d been even younger than him when he’d been turned. Sandy brows rose faintly as he snorted. ”It’d be a hell of a lot more R-rated. She might only have eyes for you though, yeah?” Hannya liked to play, to tease, but she really seemed to appreciate it when she really got her claws into someone. There’d been some bloke around one night, someone who seemed to know the girl Hannya was in at least – he’d heard enough in Emerald City to know that was how it worked. You didn’t get turned into a demon, you got infested by one.
A gulp of his beer didn’t do anything to wash the horror of that idea away. Magnus could be cloying, his attempt to save that scruffy, damned kid coming with a dose of smothering care. The saint doing what he could, trying for father of the year.
Maybe if Cassie had one of them she wouldn’t have been so dead set on getting into the club. It was dangerous, he’d tried to warn her about it but it was like she was deaf to anything that sounded like a no. Lawrence’s blunt retort hit like a sucker punch, driving the beer back up Linc’s throat. Fuck. The hand he’d knuckled his lips with covered his eyes and squeezed before it was shoved back through his hair. ”Then you walk her out. Don’t serve her. It’s not hard.” Cassie didn’t listen though. She hadn’t in the store room when he’d made it clear they couldn’t … tracing fingers under his eyes as the veins had crawled, touching featherlight to his fangs. She was dangerous – to herself as much as anybody else.
Woah. There was no woah about it. Linc grumbled under his breath, thumping the bottom of the bottle lightly against his knee. He stared up humourlessly at Lawrence. ”That’s exactly what you do. It’s your job isn’t it? Make sure they’re old enough to be in there and get served?” He’d had to get handsy with Cassie to get her out though, hand on one slender bicep as he’d tried to get temptation at a safe distance before he did something to her. Lawrence was dipping back into his pocket for his flask but his fingers shook on the bottle with remembered hunger and other things.
He gripped harder, nodding even though he knew that Lawrence’s best probably wasn’t enough with Cassie. She was a brick wall. Maybe it was something to be proud of, having the backbone to do that but in a place like the Ruby Slipper – or worse, Emerald City – that was just a red flag to the very big, very bad bulls. Linc drained his bottle, reached for another like it was gonna do anything to burn the hunger out of him. The laugh was full of genuine amusement as Lawrence tried telling him that he was just keeping Hector and Hannya on his good side. ”Bangin’ her just to keep her on your good side seems like a hell of a price,” he drawled. Literally.
Sniffing in a ragged breath, Linc began to shove his way to his feet, taking the beers with him. He hitched them towards Lawrence in offer again. ”She made you stop all that? It’s soundin’ worse all the time, mate. Why not find a new job, get outta Hannya’s hands?” Maybe he should’ve suggested swapping places, even if it meant practically getting into bed with the devil. Lawrence was the sort of good son Magnus would’ve loved, instead of the one he had to lecture for screwing up in a situation that was beyond screwed up with or without his intervention.

R-rated along with the rest. “She’d soon find someone else here to play with” No doubt she would have killed someone by now and smeared the victim’s blood across both of the vampire’s faces. Looking for a reaction out of them. Just like she did the one time Lawrence saw her outside the club. She’d only been wandering down the streets five minutes before slamming someone's head into their steering wheel. Granted, the human deserved what he got but she didn’t need to be so public about it. He flicked through the newspapers for days after that but nothing cropped up. Just another death played down and unreported. It appeared law enforcement was equally as keen to keep things hidden. Anything to stop their perfect little town from being tarnished with scary stories. It wasn’t like New Orleans, where most deaths were blamed on tourists getting too drunk. Would he even be bothered if Hannya was hanging off the neck of someone else? It never fazed him because it was business but when she outwardly flirted with Hector in the bar it did cause a rush of jealousy. Sharing her with another member of staff. He pushed the mental image out of his mind as the conversation turned to Cassie. It wasn’t a better topic but welcomed by Lawrence. He glanced down at Lincoln as he squeezed his eyes shut. Perhaps his response was too cutting but he wasn’t going to dress up the truth for the other vampire. Cassie would be dead if he hadn't stepped in sooner, but that apparently that was a price she was willing to pay to drink with vampires. “You know she can be stubborn” He added a little chuckle in an attempt to lighten up the mood. Lawrence winged a brow at Lincoln. Clearly, he’d struck a nerve by bringing up the young witch, even more so by announcing he wouldn’t drag her out the bar kicking and screaming. “I never ask for ID considering most of the customers are dead” Technically. He was embarrassing himself by asking some five-hundred-year-old vampire to show him their ID, but he knew Cassie was underage before serving her. Again, technically. “Next time I see her I’ll kick her out” It wasn’t an empty promise either, rarely going against his word. Or at least he’d try his best. The topic moved swiftly back to Hannya. He and Hannya. “What can I say? One minute I’m serving drinks, the next minute… I’m not” The evening started like no other. Lawrence was behind the bar, pouring shots and Hannya galavanting around the club until she clocked him. A fresh face in the bar. A new member of staff to seduce. Lawrence took a sip of his beer, shaking his head at Lincoln’s offer of another one. He pulled the bottle away from his lips quickly, swallowed harshly, “She didn’t make me do anything” Did she? The demon could be forceful when she wanted to be, but he couldn’t lay all the blame on her. He chose to sink his teeth into her neck. “It pays the rent” Even if he wanted to leave, where else would he go? Apparently, all the staff at Campbell’s were pumped full of vervain. There was a low buzz coming from his jean pocket. He reached in, sliding his phone out. It was Phoebe. She was here and looking for him. “Right. I’ve gotta go find my sister” Lawrence glanced down at Lincoln, sliding his phone back in his pocket, “Like I said. I’ll do something about Cassie next time” There was a trace of sincerity in his voice. He gave Lincoln a small nod before disappearing off into the crowd of students. LINCOLN CROWNE
