Kitty had been at Whitmore College for over a year; she still hadn't become wholly familiar with the woods, even though she'd been sprinting around them each full moon. All the damn trees just looked the same, but finally, she'd had come up with an idea to find her clothes faster the following morning. Inside her bundle of belongings, she placed a clove of garlic; that way, she could sniff them out when the sun rose. It was ridiculous, but it was the only thing she could think of. She was getting tired of having to walk around the woods naked. The whole anchor thing Kit had taught about wasn't exactly going to plan either. When she found herself consumed by rage, it was impossible to think about anything else, bar the anger that was building rapidly inside her. Her mind became one track when she began to lose herself to the wolf inside. Pictures of her sisters would flicker through her mind but soon fade. It just wasn't enough to keep her calm, which then sent her into a separate frenzy. Was the love for her family not enough? As always, she put it on the back burner. Something to be dealt with on another day. It was a lot for her to process, on top of trying to study and pass her exams. Quickly, she got dressed, not wanting to be caught unclothed in the woods again. Last time she was lucky to be seen by Harmony, someone who was familiar with wolves. Next time could be a cop or, even worse a hunter. As she ran her fingers through her tangled hair, she started to make her way back to campus. As always, it took her a few minutes to decide on a direction. Either way, she would end up on the outskirts of the woods sooner or later. This time she entered upon the road that led back to campus. Luckily it was still early, so she didn't see any cars on her walk back to campus. Dishevelled girl walking on her own at this hour? It was suspicious to some and she had no energy for human interaction. Kitty was keen to clamber back into bed, wrap herself up in her duvet and relax all day. Her body was exhausted from the previous night, but she managed to drag it back to campus 10 minutes later. Arriving at campus in the early hours of the morning was easier to explain away— a sneaky rendezvous the night before or a heavy night of partying. No one tended to ask though, instead just a simple nod from some as though they understood. Most were not observant enough to notice it was only the morning after a full moon she was hauling herself back to campus in such a state. Thankfully she didn't have to share a room with anyone either. No awkward conversations with someone, pretending she hadn't been covered in fur a few hours prior. Relief washed over her when she found out she'd been allocated a room to herself. The bed on the other side had laid vacant for the past 12 months. Apparently, the girl who use to stay in the room dropped out of college a week before Kitty transferred over. A blessing in disguise for the wolf. Slowly Kitty made her way down the path towards the front doors of the dorms, dragging her feet as she did so. Sleep was needed. As she drew closer to the building, she noticed another student lingering outside, "Morning" She gave the girl a weak smile, her voice carrying no energy as she spoke. PHOEBE MURPHY

Head tilted back against the red brick of the building, Phoebe let out a sigh.
The sun had started rising an hour before, just a faint glimmer on the horizon, gilding the trees as she’d trailed back through campus, heels held loose in one hand, the other still fixed around the neck of the champagne bottle. Each step towards her dorm seemed to be illuminated more, bright painted toenails a neon gleam against the dark, damp of the dew misted grass, the label of the bottle gleaming as she’d lifted it back to her lips again, trees lit in their silent ranks.
Reaching the front door of the dorm she could’ve stalked inside, her walk of pride visible to any of the girls who’d pulled themselves out of bed just as dawn had hit, but she’d sunk down on the low wall surrounding the neatly pruned shrubbery Whitmore seemed to use to gild the campus, like make up on a particular violent pig, all it did was offer hiding spots for things that lurked in the night and left bodies draped around like more garish decoration. Phoebe’s lips twitched faintly at the thought, a low hum whispering out between them. If this had been the village she’d have been the one trying to clear it up and stop the monsters, but she’d left that world behind. To find him.
Lawrence. The chuckle that rolled out at the thought of her brother, probably now tucked up in his own bed – solo – like a good little vampire, was low, just a little giddy in a way she couldn’t blame on the alcohol. Some part of her had believed she’d never track him down, or when she did it would just be as a name on a tombstone somewhere if she was lucky. Worn letters spelling out his name but telling her nothing of the life he’d lived after their parents had cast him out. The bastard vampire child, unable to lead the coven, their second choice tainted just the same way. Reunited finally.
That low hum sounded as Phoebe lifted the bottle to her lips again, the cool fizz of the champagne a contrast to the vague warmth of the sun on her face. It had been a celebration she supposed, another night at the club, dorm room friends staggering away as each had their fill, her and Lawrence the last ones left until she’d pushed him off home and she’d driven back – none the worse for wear thanks to that little bite that had changed the course of her life. The car abandoned in a lot that was within walking distance of the dorm at least. The trail through the woods. This last bit of the after party. All to be capped off by an exam on Virginia’s Constitutional Law that afternoon. Down to the bottom of this last bottle first though.
Footsteps crunched lightly on the path, moving towards her in a way she was able to track without even opening her eyes. Phoebe drummed her fingertips against the bottle to a tune in her head, waiting for the girl – the wolf – to reach the door. A wrinkle of her nose at the scent, the woods clinging to that musk that had become unmistakable once she’d come across her first wolf. Brown eyes opened to slits, her lips curling into that cat got the cream smile as she caught sight of the Asian girl with the eye patch she’d noticed around the place – like she ever wouldn’t have stood out that way – just a hint of something wan on her face.
Phoebe lowered one foot down so that her toes were just kissing the cold stone of the path. Forget the girl being a wolf, her eyes had focused on her with that faintly predatory look that had some gulping, pulses kicking up just a notch in their throat. ”Morning. All work or fun?” Her brows rose as she eased herself upright, swirling the bottle in the air by its neck to indicate a nebulous ‘out there’, wherever the girl had trailed in from. ”You certainly look tired enough for it to be fun. It’s Kitty right?” Something longer, Phoebe thought, but Kitty was what she’d heard whispered on some lips as looks were shot in the girl’s direction. A teenager with a pirate’s eye patch, daring enough to get chins wagging all over.

It wasn’t uncommon to find students loitering outside the dorms. Some wake up early to study, but most were returning home from a night out as the sun started to make its appearance. With the way she looked, it was easy to pass off as one of the students who’d been out partying all night. Clothes marked with dirt, untamed hair and heavy bags under her eyes, although to some it probably looked like she’d been sleeping in the woods all night, which ran close to the truth. At least there was no blood covering her skin like when Harmony had found her the previous month. Thankfully the blood belonged to an animal, but it didn’t make it any less uneasy. Some mornings she would spend hours trying to fit together the night before, but with each month that passed, she had come to realise it wasn’t going to work. The memories of the night before were mostly lost. There would be snippets here and there, like an old memory, but no context. It was the days following the full moon in Alatna where she killed someone that was the worst. Sleepless nights continued for weeks after as she tried her best to recall the evening. Trying to understand why she would attack someone. An innocent person according to the golden glow in her eye. Permanently tainted with the mistakes of her past and on show for the world to see. Something to tell everyone she was responsible for the death of another. It was another reason she had avoided seeking out a pack. Terrified they’ll reject her once they see the colour of her eyes, as though it was some warning sign not to trust her. A sign to say she wasn’t in control of herself, which was only partially true now. Speaking with Kit gave her a glimmer of hope about everything though. There was a way to control it and there was a way to live with being a werewolf. She just had to find what worked best for her. The walk back was always a chore. Dragging herself through the woods, until the road came into view, then eventually her accommodation. Her body was heavy from the night before, craving sleep and a warm bed. Picking out dried leaves from her hair and dusting the dirt from her skin as she continued on with her walk. Her eye lifted as she reached the front of the dorms, greeting the blonde who stood outside. “All fun no work” She responded, with a smile, knowing second year she needed to turn everything up a notch. It was impossible to breeze by in college with minimal work, as she had falsely convinced herself. Even her sisters had told her this, but she batted away their comments insisting college wouldn’t be that hard. Plus she hadn’t even chosen a challenging course. “Still up from the night before or starting early?” She nodded towards the bottle the female was drinking from. A small frown of confusion on her face as the blonde recited her name. She had her head down since coming to Whitmore, so she was confident her name hadn’t been attached to some unfavourable rumours, but this was college. There was still a chance, “Yeah it is… I’m sorry I don’t know your name” She spotted the female around the dorms a few times, but never stopped to exchange names. Kitty’s circle of friends had been limited to her coursemates with a few she’d met in Mystic Falls. As always it was a circle she was keen to expand. PHOEBE MURPHY

There’d always been a streak of wild in her but for almost a century it had been sheltered, hidden away beneath expectations and the need to keep things hush-hush. Don’t make a scene and out the coven, don’t out herself as she’d lurked out in the wilderness like some modern day witch, suckering in Hansel and Gretel with the offer of some food and shelter for the night – at a price of course. Keep herself and the village safe by losing herself in that pedestrian life for a couple of decades after they’d suffered their own bloody excitement. The blanket had been thrown back over them then, that breathless anticipation hanging in the air that it could happen again. Perhaps if her own parents had considered that she wouldn’t have been there to pin on the badge, she would’ve grown old and grey, with the mantle of ruler of the coven slowly strangling her.
Freedom. Phoebe sighed happily over it now, the sun warm on cold skin, the bottle of champagne clutched in celebration. She’d paid a price for it but she had it and she had Lawrence, what more could she possibly ask for?
Oh, there was probably a list – a bucket list she supposed – marked out in her head, but most of what would end up on there for others she’d already crossed off in those intervening decades. Lawrence had been the biggest thing, the line smudged with tears of joy. For those waking up in the dorms – or outside of them … in a bush somewhere – it was likely this. The college experience.
The girl who trailed down the path towards the dorm certainly looked like she’d spent a night up to something. Wearing that badge of exhaustion in the bags under her eyes, hair wild in ebony tangles, dirt smudged, that pirate’s eye patch – oh hello. That alone would’ve had Phoebe grinning and licking the last drops of champagne from her lower lip. A predator’s look for something that was probably at the apex in this town.
She’d leaned in almost, twisting slightly on the stone wall. Smile growing until she snorted with laughter. Phoebe hummed, gesturing towards the girl with the neck of her bottle. Using it like one of those modern doodangles – laser pointers, marking your target out in lurid red or green. ”Now that’s what I like to hear. Nobody should work themselves into that state.” She lifted her chin towards the girl, knowing the observation wasn’t exactly complimentary. It was true though.
Phoebe’s light brown eyes studying Kitty’s face again. She’d seen wolves staggering back after the full moon in the village. Some a lot less clothed, wrung out by the full moon, eventually gaining a better hold on themselves with each passing month, experience and an anchor making all the difference in the world. She made a small sound in her voice, rising to her feet, inches shorter than the other girl. ”Night before,” she admitted with a cluck of her tongue. She was offering the bottle though, cleaning the mouth off with a rub of the neck against her sleeve. ”There’s no fun in dragging yourself out of bed at dawn, but the other way around … oh that’s a joy.” Her smile almost sly, Phoebe lifted her chin again, basking in the sun for a moment more before she’d dropped Kitty’s name into the conversation.
Bobbing her head, Phoebe twisted to plop back down on the wall, patting the spot next to her. She imagined Kitty wanted to skitter upstairs before anybody else saw her - anybody who would put two and two together and just see something to kill. Or take the other eye from. Curiosity would’ve had her asking but she had some tact. ”And there I was thinking I’d gotten infamous here.” Maybe if she hadn’t compelled at least a half dozen of her classmates she might have been. ”Phoebe,” she announced, immediately offering her hand. ”I don’t think we’ve seen each other around much. Are you always a night owl Kitty? If you are, there are plenty of opportunities for less work to go on…” Not that the club in town needed her touting it. The place seemed to fill every night anyway and more often than not she dragged someone there. While Lawrence was so tied to the place, so was she, holding on to her big brother in case he slipped away again.

If she was at her grandmother’s house she would have been sneaking up the stairs quietly by now, terrified of waking her grandmother up and being yelled at for coming home so late. Kitty was never the one to stay out to all hours of the morning when she was younger. She left that to her sisters, who would be creaking up the stairs as the sun was peaking through the curtains. Kitty would help them stuff their beds full of pillows to make it look like they were asleep, whilst her sisters snuck out the backdoor in their best attire. Heels quietly clattering against the tiles in the kitchen and the door quietly latching shut as her grandmother would yell out to Kitty about some new soap drama that had just started on television that evening. She would pick up a box of biscuits and join her grandmother in the living room for the evening, making up all excuses for her sibling’s whereabouts. Sometimes, she was convinced her grandmother knew exactly what was happening. She may be old, but she wasn’t stupid. Kitty saved her partying days for college. The tables turned in her first year. It was her sisters who were ushering her out of the kitchen whilst they lingered behind to keep their grandmother company. There would be no heels dragging along the floor for her though, rather heavy lace-up boots accompanied with a leather jacket and jeans. Her sisters would try and force their luxury make-up on her but she just wasn’t interested from a young age. Sure, she’d stick some foundation on and a bit of mascara but her sisters would take about contouring whatever the fuck that was supposed to be. The striking differences between the girls were fine until Kitty tried to raid one of her sibling’s wardrobes to find sparkly tops and figure-hugging dresses. Now she had Krista’s wardrobe to raid but felt like they hadn’t reached that level of friendship where Kitty could just take her tops and jeans. They had only been living together a few weeks, so naturally, she would leave it a couple more before taking a peek inside Krista’s wardrobe. Growing up with two sisters it was hard going from that to having no one at Whitmore College. She took it in her stride and threw herself into the social side of things at college. Partying, drinking, staying up late. Fuck she even considered joining a sorority before she realized she would have hated it. Now she had a roommate though and it was a roommate who didn’t ask too many questions when she came home the following morning looking like trash. Krista asked the right amount of questions but didn’t probe too far, but still, she was worried her roommate would soon put two and two together. Notice Kitty always comes home late after a full moon, but realistic would a werewolf cross her mind? It would never have crossed hers before. Kitty chuckled, glancing down at her current state for a moment. She nodded in agreement, “I’ll be back on track once I have a shower and a big breakfast” The thought of putting food in her mouth made her mouth run dry, then the girl offered her the bottle. Perhaps it would remove the edge of the full moon. Unlikely, but she wasn’t one to turn down free alcohol. “Thanks” Kitty reached for the bottle, taking a small sip as the blonde spoke. She pulled the bottle away from her lips, “That’s what college is about. Staying out late and making bad decisions” Whether it be in the form of drinking too much or falling in bed with someone you shouldn’t. Kitty was guilty of both. She wiped the neck of the bottle, handing it back to the girl before joining her on the wall. Usually, she would have been scurrying upstairs to wash the night away, but she was growing used to these mornings after a full moon. There was no point fighting it. Phoebe. Kitty gave the girl a short nod, taking the offered hand for a handshake. “Friday to Sunday, yeah. You can usually find me at the bar in the club” She responded with a chuckle, “My sister was kind enough to give me her ID when I left home” Only another year to go before she could legally purchase a drink. One long year. “I’m guessing you go there too? Not gonna lie the nightlife in Mystic Falls is lacking compared to Altana” PHOEBE MURPHY

The village had been home for decades but it was one not entirely unlike Elk Valley. Small, sheltered, wary of outsiders – at least at first when it came to the village. The closest thing to a club either of them had was a bar and even that was the size of a postage stamp, the same people filling the stools on a daily basis. Phoebe hadn’t found herself hating it, she’d been used to the small and quiet by then, but stepping outside of it for the first time had left her feeling like she really was going through the whole college thing for the first time. It might’ve been in – or around, in the college’s case – a town just as small, but whether it was because of the students or in spite of them, there was more life here somehow. And she had basked in it.
Lawrence’s residence at the club, her group of friends from the law course, Teddy – oh dear, sweet innocent Teddy – all lures into those places where she could indulge. She had last night too. Phoebe could still feel the buzz of it in her system. Even if it wasn’t the buzz that liquor might’ve given her if she hadn’t opened the door to beasts looking for a little retribution on the coven. It sang in the electric wires of her nerves, gleamed in the whiskey brown of her eyes as she’d fixed them on Anne Bonny here. Still lit up and not quite ready to give up the night.
Her brother might’ve warned the girl if they’d been at the club, that sudden edge in her eye a warning of her interest, but Lawrence wasn’t there to drag people out of range. Right about now he’d likely have been sighing out her name like a quietly whined Phoebe had ever stopped her. Phoebe hummed her agreement, smiling sweetly. ”Add a little hair of the dog and you’ve probably got yourself the perfect recipe.” A subtle sniff proved that the girl hadn’t been out drinking though, no booze oozing from her pores.
Still, she took the bottle she offered up, another point chalked up for her in the esteem stakes. There weren’t many around the college who’d have done it without pulling a face as they sipped. The lightweights, always squealing as though it was paint stripper they were downing and not a Cosmo, or – even to just torture Lawrence when she sent them up to ask – a Sex on the Beach. ”Maybe you ought to tell my brother that,” Phoebe said with an amused cluck of her tongue to take the bottle back. ”You’d think he was about ninety with all the hand wringing he does. Anybody would think I had a history of the worst possible decisions.” Phoebe screwed her face up before she laughed. Shaking her head so the tussled locks of hair tipped down her back, she took another belt of the liquor. It had been a century of them – but few and far between, it wasn’t like she needed rescuing on a weekly basis. Instead she’d shouldered that as her job.
Strap on a cape, put a crown on her head and a torch in her hand and she could’ve been this century’s combination of the Statue of Liberty and Super Woman. Phoebe inched over as Kitty sat beside her, winging a brow as she set the bottle down between them and shook Kitt’s hand. ”A woman after my own heart,” she told her. ”We must’ve been like ships in the night. My brother works the bar, I’m there often enough to help sprout a few more grey hairs for him.” Phoebe winked as dropped her hand from Kitty’s and swiped a finger in a cross over her chest. ”Your secret’s safe with me, I won’t even let Lawrence know you’re on the sneak.” She imagined that half the people in the club were too young to be there – even if they were turned a century ago – herself and Lawrence included.
Phoebe drew a knee back up, propping her foot on the edge of the wall and her knee on her chin as she wrapped an arm around it. Perhaps she could’ve travelled further after she’d ventured out of the wilderness but until there’d been some reason she’d stayed put in each of her little landing spots. ”Can’t say I’ve ever been. Is that where you’re from?” Details she couldn’t exactly toss out herself. Sure, Elk Valley was just a picturesque little spot nobody had ever heard of but she couldn’t add another layer of ‘oh, I grew up in a coven, surprise, surprise, I’m a witch turned vampire’, not even in this town. Her eyes narrowed shrewdly again, her lips curving. ”So, last night, a good decision or a bad?” She hadn’t dug quite far enough there yet.

She was told to enjoy the hangover-free mornings as much as possible as apparently, they would hit harder as she grew older. The night after prowling the woods on all fours was a different type of hangover though if she were to call it that. Her bones ached from snapping and her throat burned from the howling. It was worse than a hangover and it was something a little hair of the dog couldn’t wash away. Hopefully, it would get better with time. Part of hoping that one day it would stop altogether and she’d be cured. How could she be doing this when she was 80? She wanted the perks of being a wolf without actually having to turn into a wolf, but as her grandmother always pointed out. You can’t have everything in life. This was something she struggled to take in her stride though. It wasn’t the first time she was knocking back the alcohol as the sun was just making an appearance. Determined to keep the night going even though everyone around her was practically dead on their feet. Phoebe seemed like the type of girl who could keep up with Kitty, possibly even out party her. She chuckled “Sometimes bad decisions make great stories. I don’t wanna be old as shit telling my grandkids I went to bed at 9 pm every night” She scoffed, almost amused at the idea of doing such a thing. The only time she should be going to bed at 9 pm is for a quick nap before going out later that evening. The club was always so dark it was impossible to see who was in there anyway. So many times she had lost her coursemates in the club only to find them two hours later after dancing and drinking with anyone within her vicinity. She would be dragging anyone to the bar to do shots with her, “I’ll keep an eye out for ya next time I’m in there. Do a few shots and make some bad decisions together” She offered with a smile. Always on the lookout for a drinking partner, ideally someone who didn’t complain their feet were hurting at 2 is because they’d made the dumb decision to wear heels. Boots all the way for Kitty, even in the summer she was sporting her lace up boots. She didn’t exactly need the height though, unlike some of her friends who struggled to get the attention of the bar staff in a sea of tall people. A quiet thud as Phoebe placed the bottle down between the pair. Her eye shot over at the other girl as she mentioned her brother worked there, but her secret was safe. A smirk from Kitty as Phoebe raised her hand to run her finger over her chest, mimicking a cross. “Oh shit. Yeah, don’t tell your brother otherwise I’m screwed. It’s literally the only club in town” If she couldn’t drink in there where else could she drink? Campbell’s bar was okay for a few drinks, but it lacked the atmosphere the club provided. Plus, the music wasn’t the sort of music you could groove to. More of a mellow vibe in there, as adults stood at the bar ordering their fancy cocktails. Kitty was a vodka and any mixer type of girl. No frills. Her feet tapped lightly on the wall as she explained Mystic Falls was a bit dead compared to Atlanta. “Yup. It’s alright, just gotta stick to the right areas. A shit load of bars and clubs as well. Anything you’re looking for Atlanta has it” Like most people she tended to stick to the ones she knew, rarely venturing to new places. It was either the large nightclubs with shiny disco balls and confetti cannons or the glamorous and dazzling gay bars. “You?” There was a hint of an accent. North America or even Canada? She was useless at trying to pick up where people were from unless it was England even then they could be Irish or something. Last night wasn’t strictly a decision, but she was prepared to dress it up like that. Kitty flashed a grin at Phoebe. A hum in her throat as she contemplated the question. The lie she was about to spin “He’s worth a text back I guess” Despite the grin she flashed at the other girl, Kitty wasn’t the type to seek out that kind of thing on a night out. Usually, she was trailing home with her friends hanging her arm, but sometimes the opportunity arose. Sometimes someone caught her eye across the dance floor. PHOEBE MURPHY

After years feeding from humans and struggling to still be like them Phoebe had begun to understand at least a little why those things had done what they had to Lawrence, to the coven. Perhaps the first had been strictly out of hunger – control, even when you were old enough to have babysat Methuselah, was tricky – just stumbling across some kid it had probably been ridiculously easy to feed on. She had felt that desperation herself a time or two. Winters had been long and bitter where she’d retreated to after she’d been kicked out. When snow was practically neck deep the woods weren’t exactly teeming with people. Travelling through the snow to the nearest camps hadn’t been easy either. Her thirst had burned, desiccation starting to kick in the last winter before Josiah had found her. Practically falling on the first person who’d stumbled across her cabin afterwards had been understandable.
Perhaps stealing away any future a coven thought they had was too. An eye for an eye, a fang for a fang. The problem was that never ended. If you let all of that consume you along with your hunger you ended up in a war that would just destroy everything in its path until there was nothing left. Once upon a time she’d imagined telling her future children stories about her brother – including that dramatic warning about what happened if you didn’t nip things in the bud entirely – there was fat chance of that now. Phoebe was just as much a warning about what might happen as Lawrence was. One story exchanged for another.
As Kitty laughed over the thought of ending up with nothing but the sort of stories that would bore the grandkids to sleep, Phoebe imagined what that would’ve been like for her. The same stories the coven had passed down to them – almost all bullshit. It wasn’t like it would ever happen now though. Their direct line had been broken by her turning, vampires firing blanks, wombs entirely barren – unless, apparently, you were a Mikaelson. The liquor burned rapidly down her throat, washing away what little regret she had over that. ”Be that exciting granny instead,” she agreed, smirking. ”Flash your tattoos and tell them about the time you took a week long bender in college.” Who knew, perhaps one day she’d be aunty Phoebe, sitting and telling her stories to some kid, a tow headed little thing like Teddy’s son.
Wasn’t that more of a pang than she would’ve thought. Yikes.
That was why she needed to stick to the club. No lost puppies to adopt and take home in an attempt to sharpen up those adorable little teeth they’d spent half the night nibbling you rather pleasurably with. The club was about drinking and dancing, the music too loud for those conversations that had that little nugget of affection bubbling up like gas under your diaphragm. Phoebe swayed towards Kitty, bumping her lightly with her shoulder. ”Deal,” she said with a slow grin. ”I’ll even make sure we get the friends and family discount.” Lawrence might squawk but she was putting her own money in the pot for most of what she was drinking wasn’t she? Anyway, the time she was getting to spend with him there was vastly overdue.
There wasn’t any sort of guarantee that he felt the same way but Phoebe liked to think there’d been a hole in her brother that their reunion had filled. The family, or what remained of it, was back together and she could either use that for good or evil. For now it would be good. Phoebe winked one whiskey coloured eye and tapped her finger against her chest. Lawrence didn’t have to hear everything. The pirate’s secrets were gonna remain zipped behind her lips. She was a master of keeping secrets after all.
Only one person at the school had heard her story – stupid group project - and that was all now locked in her head. Not a word about where she’d been before Mystic Falls getting past lips compelled shut. Kitty, it seemed, wasn’t as cagey about her past. Phoebe made a low, amused noise at Phoebe’s warnings. It wasn’t arrogance or fearlessness – although once upon a time it might have been both, with some added overconfidence – it was a certainty that the wrong areas wouldn’t cause her much harm now. ”I’ll have to put it on my bucket list then,” she promised. It was a short list now that finding Lawrence was crossed off of it and if she had her way she’d have a hell of a lot of years to cross the rest of the things off of it. She dipped her head, pressing her lips together for a moment before he gaze cut sideways at Kitty. ”Originally – the middle of nowhere British Columbia.” Lately, another small town of supernaturals – not an admission to make on a campus where you just couldn’t tell.
Considering last night had been a full moon there was always a chance. Phoebe kept her gaze on Kitty, like she could bore straight through that eye patch to the truth beneath. She chuckled, her grin turning sharp as the Cheshire Cat’s. ”So the chance of another night of dicey decisions. I guess that’s a step up on didn’t bother giving him my number in the first place?” Teddy hadn’t exactly gone away with the promise of another night of passion in her dorm room. The pang that went through her gut at that had her grimacing slightly. Not her finest moment but perhaps it had been fitting in the grand scheme of his night of firsts. The first time that he’d been ghosted by the woman he’d slept with on their first – oh that certainly hadn’t been a date.

Her sister had spent months telling Kitty she should see this curse as a blessing. She was different, and not in the way her eye patch made her stand out, but rather she wasn’t that wasn’t human. Apparently, that was cool, but sometimes it was difficult to see the cool side of that when your bones were snapping once a month. She’d never even broken a bone until she’d been bitten and the pain was something she couldn’t begin to describe. In some way, though it did get easier with each full moon. The less she fought it, the less it hurt. Nonetheless, she was still terrified of what she was. Her sisters could dress it up any way they wanted but the truth was Kitty was now someone, or something, that could kill someone without even realizing until the next morning. She was waiting for one of her sisters to drop the pregnancy bomb any day now. Both of them were so settled in Atlanta. Good jobs, nice apartments, caring boyfriends. The next step was marriage and kids. Kitty was going to be that off-the-wall aunt who came home at Christmas and birthdays from somewhere exotic. Being a wolf had put some kind of damper on her finding someone. She couldn't even picture having kids, never mind those kids having kids. The future seemed so far away and a foreign land she wasn’t ready to explore yet. “I honestly don’t think I could hack a week bender. A weekend bender is sometimes enough” Though since she was bitten she noticed she could drink a lot more before and not even a few beers or shots, like a shit ton much. It was crazy to her. She broke into a wide smile. Friends and family discounts at the bar were exactly what she needed to help her falling bank account. Kitty wasn’t fortunate enough to come from one of those rich families where their parents give them an allowance every week. She’d met those types of students and they were something else. Nice cars and fancy handbags whilst she was cruising around her beaten-up Volvo, which had been passed through generations, with a rucksack that was holding on for its life. She grew up being poor though, at least under her grandma took her in. Her memories of her childhood were somewhat fractured, but there were ones she could clearly remember. Like stealing food from the school canteen because her mom had forgotten to go grocery shopping, again. Those trips back to Atlanta now were exciting, but there was dread in there at times. It had been over 12 months since she left, but she was still worried those hunters were looking for her. Well, they weren’t because she’d driven out to the woods at night to check, but maybe they were only there on a full moon, whereas she was at college. “Ah yes Canada!” Okay she would never have guessed the accent. “Never been that far north” She commented. Something she needed to throw on her bucket list. Kitty chuckled, as she continued to go along with her lie about where she’d been all night. She looked the part, someone who had been up all night doing something. Her eyelids were growing heavy and she was convinced she could feel the bags under her eyes were beginning to grow. Thank God she had her eye patch to cover at least one eye. Eventually, Kitty pulled herself to her feet, “I’m gonna head off to bed for a few hours. Try and make up what sleep I’ve lost” The few days after a full moon was always a slight struggle to get her sleep pattern back into some kind of normal. “Hit me up next time you head out. I’m in room 502” She was in need of a drinking partner who could hold their liquor and Phoebe struck her as that type of girl. She flashed the blonde a smile before turning back to head into the dorms. PHOEBE MURPHY - the end
