━ you knew somewhere deep it was too good to be true ━
EVELYN had been in Mystic Falls for a few weeks or so now. After the incident with her father back in New York and with Andy now being back in the picture, she had a lot on her mind. Of course, all her issues all revolved around her dearest father who was hell bent on causing her nothing my misery. It was sickening and disheartening all at the same time because one way or another, he was still her father. But that was even a stretch as he had twisted into something more more sinister, to the point where she didn't recognize him anymore, that day in the coffee shop proved that much. The expression magic he had possessed had turned him into someone different, into a monster, the thing that parents told their children about at night in order to get them to go to bed faster. William Monet was a scary story, one she was stuck living inside of. Everywhere she went she was constantly looking over her shoulder, afraid that when she turned around there would be her father waiting on her.
But she had to take things one step at a time, with her first step being to figure out a way to bring back her friend Savannah to life, she owed her that much given as though it had been her father who had caused her death... because of her. Evelyn felt at fault for what had transpired and so she was going to do whatever it took to help her friend. But bringing someone back to life wouldn't be an easy task. First off, the amount of power she would need would be more than she had ever used before. She would need something to be able to harness that much power to use for the spell she would have to create to accomplish this. It was a long road ahead and countless hours of working on this spell to be able to get it to work properly, to hopefully bring her dearest friend back after her life was so cruelly taken from her. Thankfully, she didn't have to do all this work crammed inside of a small motel room. She had managed to get herself a cute little apartment in the heart of town square, one with plenty of windows and natural light, even had a balcony. Plenty of space to be able to work on the spell without having to be cooped up in a tiny motel room. The apartment was a breath of fresh air, quite literally considering the amount of windows this apartment had. It made working on the things that much easier.
Deciding that she needed a latte from the local coffee shop, Evelyn made her out towards the coffee shop. From her new place it was only a five minute walk away, which she was sure to take into account when she found her this place. It was her favorite little spot in town, a little detail she appreciated. As she exited her apartment building, she made her way down the sidewalk, towards the coffee shop, but as she walked toward the coffee shop she noticed the local library and couldn't help but enter and check it out. Evelyn had always been a huge book nerd, loving getting sucked into different little worlds that were so unlike the life she lived. It was a nice escape. Walking through the library to admired the inside as she looked at books, but as she looked around she couldn't help the overwhelming feeling that she was being watched and suddenly her senses were on high alert. Was this another one of her father's spies watching her every move?
She didn't know, but she peaked over her shoulder to see a guy with brown hair and dark eyes almost hovering near her, almost as if he were watching her. She felt her anxiety begin to rise to the surface at the confrontation that was sure to occur within the next few minutes. No. No. She wouldn't live her life in fear, she couldn't. But more than that, she couldn't let her father know he was getting to her, that sending his spies was useless. So without having time to talk herself out of it, she quickly spun around to face the man behind her.
"Are you following me?"

━ i started to dream again ━ Literature in the modern world was… strange, to say the least. Teddy was used to stories being provided verbally around a campfire; the only thing ever bound were grimoires and items of the like, notes jotted down while his mother hovered over her table of herbs and trinkets. He remembered clinging to her side while she worked; little did he know she was only petting his hair to retrieve loose strands, her fingers running through his curls until they plucked enough to begin her spell. A spell to fix him━offering sacrifices to their gods and begging for her child to be normal━to produce his own magic. His younger sisters weren’t enough; he was the firstborn, and all the responsibility rested on his shoulders.
It seemed strange now to think of how much had changed. Not only did he abandon the only place he’d ever known, his coven, but that he was raising a child all by himself. Octavia was dead at his hand, though blame lingered for his mother, the one who’d driven him to fight back against his family. He’d thrust himself into the human world, and while he had to adjust, he’d never expected to grow so many roots in Mystic Falls. Even after his mother sent her henchmen to attack him, he’d stayed, almost dependent on his friendship with Lawrence. But that’d seemed to fizzle out, Sabine was long gone, and the girl from the bar acted so strangely towards his advances. He felt stuck. He wanted to leave, but Julian was getting a lot of help in his new school, and he prayed that Lawrence would come around━that this was all just… some sort of misunderstanding.
Teddy wandered into the library, through it, desperate to find new books for Julian━and some for himself. They had a television, though Teddy often had trouble using it, and he didn’t want Julian to get used to it. Books were safer. Though, he completely missed the kids’ section when walking in, heading straight through and to the first row he could spot, dark eyes wandering over the labelled spines.
He didn’t notice the girl a few steps away, nor did he pay much attention to her━not until he turned to look past her, squinting at the books just past her head. Teddy only looked at her when she glanced over her shoulder at him, his own eyes darting back to the books, worried she would perceive him as strange. It ended up being worse than that, though. Suddenly, the blonde was whipping around and talking straight at him, accusing Teddy of━what?
Dark eyes went right back to the girl, his brows raising suddenly, completely caught off guard. His mouth opened, but no words came out━nothing more than a quiet stammer, anyway. “I━uh…” Was it wrong to be in the same aisle as somebody else? Were there unspoken rules of libraries he didn’t know about? Teddy immediately grew worried, anxiety building in the pit of his stomach. “Uh… no? I’m sorry━” He took a small step back, and then turned towards the bookshelf, putting his hand on one as if he could disappear into it. Quickly, Teddy looked back up at the girl.
“I just… I was looking for a book.” He swallowed nervously, pulling out the one he had his hand on. Turning it over, he glanced at the cover: ‘16 Foods to Naturally Boost Uterus Health.’ Teddy cleared his throat, glancing at the girl with a sheepish expression. Well, this didn’t help his case whatsoever.

━ you knew somewhere deep it was too good to be true ━
GOD she was exhausted. All Evelyn needed was to take a week long nap, escape from all this never ending bullshit. Due to her lack of ability to sleep she knew that was highly unlikely. Ever since she had gotten into town from New York her paranoia and insomnia had gotten immensely worse. She had deep bags underneath her eyes and she just looked tired. God she just wanted all of this to end, for her father not to be an issue any longer. Evelyn knew good and well that her father's plans for her were about to be made known. This entire war between the two of them would soon end and she just had this sinking feeling that she wouldn't come out of it alive. Call it gut instinct, but she just knew that she wouldn't be breathing much longer, not where her father was concerned. If it came down to it, he would kill his own daughter as she was sure that he had killed her mother and her lover. William Martineau wasn't above killing his own kin and so she feared that would be how her story ends, at the hands of her father.
Evelyn ran a hand through her hair as she heard the guy in front of her that he wasn't following her, that it was all some sort of misunderstanding. Was it though? It really was never ending with her father's puppets. They were relentless and it seemed they just kept coming like he had an endless supply of them just waiting to screw with her, so the very fact she had accused this guy of following her wasn't out of the ordinary. It was exhausting being this paranoid, constantly having to look over her shoulder in fear of what or who she may see lurking. It was almost every single day that she was dealing with this shit. One thing after another. Until this war came to an end and her father was dead... there would be no peace for her. No sanity.
The blonde watched as the guy took a small step backwards, telling he that he was just looking for a book, pulling one from the shelf that he just so happened to be 'looking for' and when she saw the title she knew that was a lie. ‘16 Foods to Naturally Boost Uterus Health.’ From the embarrassed look on the guy's face, she knew there was no way he could have been one of her father's spies, simply no way. The sheepish expression that was showcased across his features was enough for her to know she had wrongfully accused him of following her. Evelyn let out a soft sigh as she tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear as she looked at the guy she had embarrassed for no good reason, well, her reasoning was legit, but she still couldn't help but feel bad about it.
Gently taking the book from the guy's hands, she looked at it briefly before looking back up at him, not being able to hide the smile that spread across her lips as she laughed softly. "Unless you have a uterus, I don't think this is the book that'll help you." She said jokingly as she turned and slid the book back into its rightful place before looking back at the guy. "I - uh, I'm sorry about accusing you of following me. That's my bad." She said, hoping he would accept her apology and see that she was genuinely sorry for what had happened. With everything that had happened to her, thinking someone who was a little close for comfort was following her, wasn't weird.

━ i started to dream again ━ Teddy could feel the blood thumping in his ears once he realized what book he was ‘reading,’ throat going dry almost immediately. He wasn’t following this girl, but now she was sure to think he was. He felt like an idiot, one who couldn’t get anything right—raising Julian, his friendship with Lawrence, the women in his life. None of it had worked out, and he blamed himself for it━this misunderstanding was just another low part of a day that was already terrible. Teddy didn’t tremble, he wasn’t scared, but his stomach twisted and his cheeks blazed hot.
Idiot.
He hoped she would believe him anyway. He couldn’t imagine why anybody would be following her, but any stranger would probably think that about him, too, and he had been followed━nearly killed. Another bit of anxiety weighed down the hulking pile building up in his mind. He wished for things to get easier, but nothing was as hard as what he’d been through before. Lost friendships, raising a toddler and trouble with girls were all part of normal life. It was what he’d always been after, why he wanted to escape the coven in the first place; a life like the one he had in Mystic Falls. But he was supposed to share it with Octavia. His wife. And that dream had been squashed.
So he wasn’t truly looking a gift horse in the mouth. This life was only part of a whole.
When she took the book from him, Teddy was thought she’d smack him across the face with it. Dark eyes flicked up to hers, bracing himself before he saw her smile. His gaze dashed across her lips and teeth to survey it, just to make sure this wasn’t a trick or a scowl before the nervousness faded, and he mirrored her expression. It wasn’t all gone, he knew better than to be so trusting, but he hoped it was a step in the right direction.
“No.” Teddy chuckled sheepishly, relinquishing his hold. “Did you… want it? Apparently, nuts are good for it.” It was the only line he caught before he’d suddenly melted into a pile of emotions. And, suddenly, Teddy realized what he’d said and how it could be misconstrued. It seemed as though he was losing his ability to speak to women whatsoever. “Uh━I mean peanuts, cashews, those… kind…”
Desperate to look anywhere but at her, Teddy watched the book disappear back into the shelf, wondering how someone could go from accusing him of following her to being so kind in an instant━and why he, for some reason, couldn’t let go of the guilt for making her uncomfortable.
‘I - uh, I'm sorry about accusing you of following me. That's my bad.’
His eyes widened, darting back to her, his smile coming on fuller now. “It’s okay.” Teddy spoke honestly, not harbouring a speck of resentment for the woman. “I was worried I was standing too close to you or something. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.” He found her eyes again, “I’m Teddy. It’s nice to meet you… now that everything’s cleared up.” He attempted to joke, clearing his throat awkwardly.
“Are you alright?” Teddy asked. If you thought somebody had to be following you, there was a good chance something else was going on… or she was just paranoid. “Was it only me, or are you expecting somebody to be following you?” The offer to help lingered there on his tongue. She was still only a stranger, but that didn’t matter for him. He’d go to great lengths to help someone in danger… just as Lawrence had. It still stung.

━ you knew somewhere deep it was too good to be true ━
EVELYN was an absolute mess and she had damn near hit her breaking point. She didn't have many friends in this town, only now Andy and Cas. Despite the friendships she was forming she couldn't have felt more alone and the very fact she hadn't heard a word from her father was that much more scary. The eerie silence was utterly bone-chilling. But more than that, the feeling of being completely and utterly alone had caused her to break down one too many times in her apartment. All her life she had felt so incredibly alone, like she had no one in this world who was actually on her side, who was there for her. Having not felt love from her own parents she was forced to seek it elsewhere but that never turned out well for her either. It was like she was cursed to live a loveless world. But she knew she couldn't talk like that given the people she had met and had been reunited with in this town. But knowing her history, she was sure to screw that up too.
She seemed to screw everything up, had felt like she disappointed those who she cared for the most to the point where they left her, yet again, completely and utterly alone. Every day since that day in New York has felt so surreal. Like she just floats from one day to the other, a zombie moving through time and space. Lost inside her own sick and twisted house of horrors that she built around herself for protection. All she wanted was to cry and scream and just let it all out because it was killing her inside to know the pain she could cause to those she held close because of her own father.
It was inevitable though, soon enough her past would come back to haunt her, to ruin every good thing in her life. Her father had been the cause of that, he'd been the cause of everything disastrous in her life and she blamed him, but she blamed herself also because she let him get to her. She had failed in keeping her father locked away inside of her mind, had allowed for herself to be constantly worrying about him and his next moves, so much so that she became increasingly obsessed with ending his entire existence, especially since Andy had mentioned the plan to do so in the first place. She wanted to free herself from his grasp but she knew deep down that she would lose everyone around in the process because of her newfound obsession with getting rid of her father. But it was what she had to do, what had to be done to save everyone she loved, and while it pained her to know that she would potentially have to push them all away, it was for the best. She wouldn't lose anyone else because of her father. She couldn't.
But for the time being, she would try not to dwell on what was to come, instead focusing on what was right in front of her. Evelyn had a hard time remaining in the present, on focusing on what was right in front of her. She spent too much of her time worrying about the unknown that it was beginning to consume her. More often than not, especially lately, she had caught herself drifting off, even in the middle of conversations. That lone thought caused her to realize she had done it yet again and she snapped herself back into reality as she heard the guy chuckle at her previous comment that was said to try and lighten the mood. Which seemed to do just that as he spoke, asking if she wanted the book giving as though nuts are good for it and she rose an eyebrow and couldn't help but laugh at his outlandish comment.
The guy definitely didn't mean it in the way he intended it to sound, but it was funny regardless. He sputtered out how he meant nuts as in the kind one ate and she laughed again, "Don't worry, I know what you meant." She said grinning, and damn did it feel good to laugh, it felt so fucking freeing and in that one singular moment in time, she felt normal. As she had apologized for accusing him, he shook his head, saying that he was the one who was sorry for standing too close, for making her feel uncomfortable as that hadn't been his intention. She knew that now, but she was so damn jumpy lately she couldn't help but then the worst. Evelyn smiled as he introduced himself finally, "Nice to meet you Teddy, I'm Evelyn, but you can call me Eve or Evie, I respond to either." She said, introducing herself this time.
'Are you alright?' And there was that double-ended question she had heard a bunch of times. They never wanted to know the actual answer to that question, only asked it out of politeness. Did they ever truly want to know how you were? But then his follow up question to that made it seem like he actually was genuinely asking her if she were alright and she sighed heavily as she ran her and briskly through her blonde curls, shaking her head as her lips formed into a tight line. "Yes. I've had people following me because of some family issues. I honestly just expect it at this point wherever I go, which is why I initially accused you of following me before." She said honestly, although saying this was only because of some minor family issues was a stretch because it was a hell lot more than some family issues. That was the understatement of the century. But how could she tell a complete stranger that she was being followed because of her psychotic father who was hell bent on taking away her magic?
She couldn't, not without sounding outright insane.

━ i started to dream again ━ Part of Teddy wondered if he’d ever get used to this━one would think he’d know how to talk by now, but that didn’t stop him from almost constantly tripping up. It was awful. It reinforced the idea that he couldn’t do anything right. At least Evie took it in stride, though; her little laugh allowing the anxiety to drain from Teddy in the form of a small smile and a matching chuckle. Perhaps he wasn’t so awful at human interaction after all.
“You have a really pretty name.” He admitted, wondering, again, if that was weird to say. Compliments and polite conversation were staples of making new friends, right? Or was there a social rule at play here that he hadn’t learned yet? That was the most likely option, though it was hard to imagine this interaction could get worse than how it began. In that regard, Teddy supposed he was safe. You couldn’t get any creepier than having a girl convinced you were following her.
‘I've had people following me because of some family issues.’
The air stopped and jammed in his throat. He could relate━especially if she was dulling it down to tell the story to a stranger. Teddy knew exactly what she was going through; the fear, the anxiety, how it made you unable to stop looking over your shoulder. It was awful. He’d had Lawrence through it all, though, so he hoped Evie did, too. If not, then perhaps he could be a kindred spirit of sorts. There was nothing worse than feeling this way and being alone on top of it all.
“I…” How was he supposed to approach this? He couldn’t jump for joy and claim they were going through the same thing━maybe they werent, but it was close enough to have Teddy hoping for someone to relate to. Still, for now, he had to sugar-coat it, just as he was sure she had. “I know exactly what you mean.” Teddy smiled sadly. It sucked to bond over something so awful. “My mom, she… blames me for something that wasn’t my fault. I’ve had people following me and actually… confronting me.” He didn’t know if it was the same for her, so he tiptoed around the subject. “I’m so sorry I made you feel that way━like I could’ve been one of them. I know how scary it is.”
Teddy shifted in place for a moment, trying to think of the best way to proceed. “Would you like to get a coffee or something? I know we only just met, but I… already offered up nuts, so I suppose beans aren’t so bad.” Before he could finish, though, Teddy was blushing and chuckling sheepishly, dark eyes darting down and away, a slight shake of his head. He couldn’t believe he’d said that. All he’d wanted was to make her feel comfortable, and then he… God, he just hoped she’d laugh again.

━ you knew somewhere deep it was too good to be true ━
EVELYN had been so damn jumpy lately, especially ever since that run-in with some of her father's men a few days ago. They had made it apparent that her father had sent them to watch her every move. That in of itself made her incredibly nervous and more than that, paranoid. That much was evidence from this encounter with Teddy. She had been so damn sure he had been following her, had been one of her father's men, that she had accused him right off the bat without giving him the chance to speak. Normally it would have been just a huge misunderstanding, that he had just been minding his own business, but Evelyn didn't live a normal life, not anymore. Back in New York, before her father had ruined her chances at a normal life, she had one. Had attended college, graduated even, was on track to have an amazing job, had tons of friends, it was everything she could have ever wanted.
And in a blink of an eye it was all taken away no thanks to her sadistic father.
God she felt humiliated that she had accused Teddy, but there was no going back now and he seemed pretty chill about what had happened, thankfully. He was a nice guy and had dismissed her accusation rather quickly, understanding even. 'You have a really pretty name,' he told her and she smiled at the compliment. "Thank you," she said genuinely already glad this encounter had turned into something nice and normal versus the alternative, which is where she had thought this bump in would have gone. Thankfully though, it hadn't. Maybe this day wouldn't be so bad after all, maybe she would even make a friend, something she desperately needed with being the new person in town.
Admitting she was being followed definitely put a damper on the mood. She could physically feel the air being sucked out of the room at her confirmation. Evelyn nervously rubbed the back of her neck at the silence, wishing she could change the subject but knew there was turning back after admitting she was being stalked, but not just by anyone, by her own family. Her father. Awkward silence filled the air, with neither knowing how to proceed, before finally Teddy spoke, stating that he actually knew what she was going through, because he had gone through the same thing. This was something she hadn't expected and her widened eyes proved that. "So you know how it feels, to constantly have to look over your shoulder, fearful that someone is lurking in the shadows. It's exhausting, isn't it?" She questioned, although it was more rhetorical than anything because she knew damn well how exhausting it was being constantly followed, as she was sure Teddy knew as well given the similarities in their stories.
Another apology and Evelyn shook her head, stopping him in his tracks. "No need to apologize, it wasn't intentional. I can't help how jumpy I am and I just have to assume the worst, unfortunately." She said with a sigh. It did make her feel better though that she had someone else who was experiencing this, even as bad as that was, at least she now had someone to talk to about it all. Sure, she had Andy and Cas, but neither of them would ever truly know the horrors she experienced, but Teddy sure did and the shared experience would make him a friend she never knew she needed.
'Would you like to get a coffee or something? I know we only just met, but I… already offered up nuts, so I suppose beans aren’t so bad.' A change of subject, exactly what she needed and Evelyn let out a belly laugh at his words, snorting slightly in the process, she couldn't help it, it was rather hilarious and definitely helped to lighten up the mood. "I would love to get coffee with you Teddy," she said, a genuine smile across her lips as green eyes stared into his dark ones. Even though Teddy was rather awkward, it was a refreshing change from the darkness that her life had been immersed in.

━ i started to dream again ━ GODDESS, YEAH, IT WAS exhausting. Teddy nodded, ducking his head down for a moment while he thought of every moment he’d legitamtely looked over his shoulder or all the nights he’d lost sleep because of it. It’d died down after settling in Mystic Falls━he and Julian were far enough away that Teddy had grown comfortable, though it turned out to be a mistake. His mother struck again when he least expected it, and it left Teddy trembling again, desperate to scrape up some remnant of sanity when it turned out okay in the end. She wasn’t dead, however, just a few of her followers, and that meant she’d come after them again. Staying in Mystic Falls was probably the most dangerous course of action, but Teddy couldn’t leave now. He’d put down roots━even if those roots weren’t in contact with him anymore━and the Salvatore School was helping Julian. He couldn’t leave. It didn’t make sense to.
While there was no replacing Lawrence, Teddy hoped he could gain a few more friends. It helped that Evie knew of his dilemma personally, though he assumed she wouldn’t be much help against a few witches, not unless she was something he didn’t know about. But that wasn’t the only reason whywhy━Teddy wasn’t like his mom; he wasn’t collecting friends as backup, he only wanted to grasp some semblance of a normal life after what he’d been through. He wasn’t allowed to have friends or real experiences━or even choose his own wife━but he could do that now. His mother wasn’t around to dictate every step he took… though she could’ve been watching them.
Maybe friends were a bad idea. It was just more people his mom could use against him━was that where Lawrence disappeared to? No, no, Lawrence could hold his own… and Teddy felt guilty for almost wishing that was the only reason Lawrence wasn’t around anymore.
He knew all about assuming the worst. Every fibre in Teddy’s being wanted to take all the pain from Evie, absorb everything even if it hurt and she was only a stranger━he didn’t want anybody else to experience this. And, while he didn’t really know her, he wanted to see the best in everybody━that meant, in his mind, Evie was innocent of everything. He couldn’t imagine what a girl like her might do to deserve this, and so Teddy assumed she didn’t whatsoever.
‘I would love to get coffee with you Teddy,’
Teddy was beaming then, big brown eyes jumping to Evie’s, face shining brightly. At least they could turn this around and make something good out of it, he thought. Coffee━and, on top of that, perhaps she might be able to get some of this off her shoulders. Teddy was all ears, of course, though he wouldn’t push. With two quick nods, he turned and motioned to the door, walking with Evie and forgetting all about why he’d come to the library in the first place. It could wait.
For a short time, he forgot all about how lonely he was now, and instead just enjoyed someone else’s company. It was nice to take his mind off it, and Teddy desperately hoped Evie felt the same way.
