Tatia had experienced a lot since Crowley had had her brought back to life and every experience was one that she was doing her best to make the most of. There were things that she knew that she would much rather forget like being used as a sacrifice in Klaus’ ritual to free his werewolf side but everything that had happened had only made her stronger and it had all brought her to where she was right now. She had been reunited with her son and he now had his own family around him as well so the truth was that she couldn’t be happier for him. She had made a lot of friends during her time in Mystic Falls, friends that had become family to her, she had taken Raelynn and Auston in after she’d turned them and she had also found Elijah once more. Tatia knew that their life raising Lukas together would have been an amazing one and she knew that they might have been blessed with more children but she also knew that if things had worked out differently then they wouldn’t have the people in their lives that they did now. Tatia wished that she could have spared the people she loved the hardship and heartache that they had endured but she couldn’t so all she could do was try and make things better for them now and she was doing her best to do just that. There was always so much going on in Mystic Falls but the people she loved were happy and the truth was that that was what mattered to her the most. Dances were something that Tatia had been to a couple of since she was brought back but that night was different. That night a blacklight party was being held at the Grill and even though Tatia hadn’t even known what one of those was at first she had still found herself feeling quite intrigued. It had been a while since she and Elijah had last gone to a party and Stefan had filled her in on what it was. She knew that deep down it was probably Elijah’s worst nightmare but as he always did he had agreed to indulge her. It went both ways because Tatia never refused to do anything that he wanted to do either but she knew that this was probably completely out of his comfort zone so the fact that he had agreed to go really did mean a lot to her. She had felt a little guilty about dragging him to her high school prom since even though that had meant that he’d had the chance to wear something that he felt comfortable in he had still spent the night surrounded by a group of teenagers and now he was going to have to go to a crowded place dressed in something that he never wore these days but it was only for one night so she hoped that he wouldn’t mind too much. “Come on my love, I know you can do casual for one night,” she teased as she sat on the bed that she and Elijah shared whenever she stayed the night at his apartment and waited for him to emerge. “You know you really don’t have to do this if you don’t want to,” she added quickly, needing to give him the chance to back out if he really didn’t want to go. He’d lingered in the closet. Head bent, fingertips light, then tight, on the cuffs of shirts, suits. His shield against what they had been for so long, placed in his hands by Esther with the warning to hold on tight. Keep yourself pristine, as long as your hands were clean you would not become what they were. Monstrosity buried beneath civility for centuries before it was stripped bare and reconciled with. He was not a saint. Elijah knew he never had been, just a man whose concern had always been his family, holding on to the humanity he believed he’d retained to help them hold onto theirs.
Then he had returned here and she had returned to show him that beneath all that was still a life of his own. Not the same one that they had left behind when she had lost her life to him, but one they could reform together.
Elijah gave a low hum as he finally shifted to another section of the small room that was as orderly as it had always been, all starched angles and tailored lines. Nothing structured here, no seams to stretch pushing fabric back from skin when they painted. Pulling a t-shirt from the shelf, one that would bare lean muscle and pale skin as the sleeves were pushed back further, nothing to fret over when the paint inevitably stained those threads in neon shades. Tatia had explained it to him, the lights that would turn them into works of art. A far cry from the balls they’d once thrown, even those gatherings that had filled the woods around this town with firelight, the throb of the drums in the air the music he had first fallen in love with her too. A step forward from the prom they’d gone to as a new rite of passage in this time, marking the end of Tatia’s time at the high school.
Fingers gripping the leather jacket he would wear over it to head there at least, Elijah paused as he heard Tatia’s voice calling out to him. She’d been lingering out in the bedroom, giving him the space to do this. Quiet encouragement, a balm for faintly frayed nerves. ”This may bring me out in hives,” he tossed back lightly as he emerged into the bedroom. The sleeves of the shirt bared the lines of ropey muscle in his arms as he emerged. Head dipped slightly, Elijah emerged, spreading his arms to show it off. The jeans, the thin charcoal grey cotton that clung close.
The moment she started to give him an out he was making a low noise in his throat, drifting towards her. He extended the hand that wasn’t holding the jacket, using it to pull her up and to him. It found her hip as he settled her against him, dark brows rising with a thin trace of amusement in his smile. ”You know that argument didn’t work on me the last time. It won’t this time either. We are doing this and I want to, even if it means letting you decorate me.” At least in a full restaurant of others in the same state it wouldn’t be like they were neon targets to his aunt, who still seemed to be lingering out there in the dark, waiting for who knew what to strike and finally take her payment for the deal she’d made with Esther a thousand years before. ”Do I pass muster?” She did, Elijah finding himself struck with that sense of thankfulness as he took her in again. After years caught in that cycle of pain and anger they’d finally all been given the chance for something so much more here.

Tatia had never heard of a blacklight party before but her friends had explained it to her and she couldn’t deny that she had found herself looking forward to going. She knew that at least some of the people she cared about were sure to be there, Stefan had promised to go and so had Elena and she knew that Caroline, Dec, Matt and Rebekah would all be there so that was as good a reason to attend as any as far as she was concerned. It had taken Tatia a while to adjust to the world that she had found herself a part of after she was brought back but over time she had managed it and none of it scared her any longer the way it once had. Stefan and Damon had taken her in and given her a safe place that she could call home and from what moment on she had started building a life for herself. She had Lukas and Elijah back in her life now along with so many other people that she cared about, both old and new, and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. Henrik had made her an Original Vampire at her own request so that the people she loved wouldn’t have to worry about losing her one day and that wasn’t a decision that she regretted but after everything that had happened she still wanted to experience everything that life had to offer and she wasn’t sure that that was going to change any time soon. Unfortunately that often meant dragging Elijah to events that he would much rather avoid if he could but each time he chose to indulge her and Tatia loved him for it. She knew that their lives would have been so different if things hadn’t worked out the way they had done but they had been given another chance at being together and Tatia knew that she was always going to be grateful for her second chance at having a future with Elijah. As she heard his response to her encouragement, Tatia felt a smile form on her face. “Now that I would like to see,” she teased, knowing that there wasn’t any chance of it whatsoever. Soon enough he emerged and Tatia let out a low whistle as he showed the look off. It was different to the Elijah she had known before she’d died, so different from the clothes they’d had back then, but while she loved him in a suit she couldn’t deny that it was good to see him in something more casual for once. Her smile widened as he took her hand and pulled her to him and Tatia smoothed her hands over his shoulders and ran them down his arms before settling her own arms around his neck. “That might just be my favourite part about tonight, right up there with seeing you like this,” she admitted, lifting herself up on her toes to press a gentle kiss to his lips. “Definitely, you look really handsome,” she nodded, pretty sure that Elijah would look great in just about anything now. “I think it’s safe to say you’ll be turning more than a few heads tonight,” she added with a smile even though she knew that that wouldn’t matter to him. He never cared what anyone thought and that truly was refreshing. “We should probably get going.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Any comfort zone he had ever settled into had eventually been torn to pieces. Most of the time it came in a violent bloody rush from his own family. The lives they had built for themselves suddenly shredded. He had been pushed more often than he cared to admit to, driven by his siblings and using their behaviour instead of his own as an excuse for the things he’d done. Tatia’s return had opened his eyes and now Elijah had no way to deny his own monstrosity, his own role in their constant battles. There was as much blood on his hands as theirs but at least now he could see it, was willing to look, and to do something about it.
Barring their wait for Dahlia things in Mystic Falls had become settled. The fact that all of them were happy for likely the first time in centuries seemingly impossible before they had all returned here and found so much more than that had left in this rural patch of Virginia. That comfort zone had settled again, the edges amorphous and malleable perhaps, enough that he had agreed to the Blacklight party. The prom hadn’t been as bad as he’d first anticipated and even if the thought of being painted up left an itch between his shoulder blades he had agreed to it.
Elijah shrugged his shoulders now, his smile turning wry as he slanted it back at Tatia. He mock shivered, crossing his arms over his chest for a moment as though he could ward them off that way. ”Depending on how the night goes, you just might be rubbing on some calamine.” The mock seriousness didn’t last but a moment. There was still a faint trace of something that might have been nerves in anybody else in the pit of his stomach but this wasn’t a man walking to the gallows, just one expanding that comfort zone for love. He didn’t blush but Elijah tilted his head as Tatia traced her hands over him. ”An opportunity for you to get a paintbrush on me?” he asked lightly. To see him in something that wasn’t a suit, perfectly pressed, each crisp line of fabric exact.
He sank into the kiss for a moment, his hand trailing up her back to curl around the back of her neck. The compliments always slipped thick and fast between the two of them. A love a thousand years in the making them emerge with ease. Elijah chuckled as he drew back and began to slip his jacket on. ”You’re a little biased,” he told her warmly. He extended his hand to her, drawing her close as he headed from the apartment.
The walk was short, just a trip across the square. From the doorway of his building he could already see the lights pulsing behind the darkened windows of the Grill. It looked like half the town was there, people outside queueing up to head in. ”I think we’re gonna be lucky to get back out of here alive,” Elijah teased. The queue moved quickly enough at least, the reason for it becoming obvious the minute they stepped inside. A booth with coloured wristbands offered. There was no question about it, he was reaching for the red. Elijah took Tatia’s wrist lightly, fixing it with a delicate touch.

Tatia knew that something like the blacklight party was so far out of Elijah’s comfort zone and the truth was that she had half expected him to say that he didn’t want to go but he hadn’t, instead he had agreed and she knew that he had done so out of love for her. Elijah had already gone to her senior prom with her and in doing so he had been surrounded by all of the teenagers that she had gone to school with and a part of her felt bad that she was asking him to step out of his comfort zone again but it had sounded like fun and she had found herself intrigued by the idea. A lot of her friends were going to be there and she knew that she wouldn’t be surprised if some of Elijah’s family were there too so she had a feeling that it wouldn’t be all bad but she still felt a little guilty about it as she waited for Elijah to emerge. She’d had no choice but to adapt to the new clothing styles that had emerged since she’d been brought back but Elijah still clung to his suits like they were a suit of armour. She knew that they had been his safety net after she’d died, a way of trying to mask the blood that had been on his hands, but now he knew the truth about what had happened to her and together they had found a way to move on from it so he didn’t need to hide behind his suits any longer but that habit was one that he didn’t seem ready to break just yet. Of course Tatia would never pass up the chance to see him dressed up given the way that he always seemed to steal her breath away when he did but now and then it was good to see him go for something a little different and that night was definitely one of those times. “If that’s what it takes, I’ll do it,” Tatia said, a smile spreading across her face as her eyes met Elijah’s. “Something tells me you’ll be just fine though. It’ll all be fine when you get there.” The build up was often the worst, it had been that way with prom and Elijah had been perfectly fine when they had actually set foot inside the school so she had a feeling that it would be the same this time as well. “That and to see you wearing something more casual for a change,” she said, her hands pausing on his arms as she pressed her lips gently against his. “I promise I’ll make it worth your while and are you really going to pass up the chance to paint me as well?” she asked, her smile turning playful as she pulled back slightly and her eyes met his. Connecting their lips once more, Tatia took a half step closer as Elijah’s hand found the back of her neck and she deepened the kiss for a moment. It had taken them such a long time to get to this point, Elijah had lived hundreds of lifetimes during the time between her dying and being brought back but no matter what he had been through or how much he had changed, underneath it all he was still always her Elijah and she knew now that he always would be. The man she had fallen in love with all those years ago was still in there and she liked seeing that side of him again when it emerged. “Maybe so but that doesn’t make it any less true,” she offered, taking Elijah’s hand as they headed out of the apartment. It didn’t take them long to reach the Grill and they soon joined the queue to head inside. “Don’t tell me the big bad Original is scared of a little party?” she teased, making sure to keep her voice low so they wouldn’t be overheard before giving his hand a gentle squeeze as they waited. “Lucky neither of us can be killed, huh?” she added with a grin. She had made her peace with the idea of becoming just a regular vampire to be with Elijah and Lukas for the rest of their lives rather than just for the rest of her human life but they had seen to it that she wouldn’t have those vulnerabilities and she couldn’t deny that she was grateful to them for that. It didn’t take them long to reach the front of the queue and Tatia’s smile returned as Elijah reached for a red wristband and fixed it around her wrist. “No hesitation there, I like it,” she beamed as she picked up a red wristband and fastened it around Elijah’s wrist in return before leading the way inside. There wasn’t any doubt in her mind that she was Elijah’s, she always had been but it was good to know that he knew it too. “Will you dance with me?” she asked once they were inside, knowing that it would probably be worth easing Elijah into it. The sentiment went both ways. If this was what it took to make Tatia happy then he’d do it. A single night’s discomfort over something like a party full of teenagers was just a blink in a life time that had already stretched on for a thousand years, but for Tatia it would be so much more. It did make her happy, leaving it shining in the smile that spread across her face. Elijah made a small sound in agreement, his head bobbing as he let his arms slip down again. He brushed fingers over his forearms, knowing that in a short time they would be covered in paint like everybody else’s. There was plenty of room for things to remain hidden in that dark.
It was Tatia’s hands moving over him then, tracing the lines the paintbrush would soon, leaving behind that feeling of warmth on his skin, like they were both still human. Elijah’s hands ran up to the small of Tatia’s back as she kissed him, settling at her waist before she levered back to look up at him. ”I don’t think I could,” he said honestly. He peeled one hand away to run it lightly up the back of her bicep. ”Tit for tat. I can’t promise I’m half the artist my brother is.” Chances of Niklaus being at the Grill tonight were slimmer than any of his other siblings – or their children. If he had been it would’ve been like Picasso walking among them. Even after years of Mikael trying to beat it out of him his brother had remained an artist rather than a warrior.
They weren’t going to get there at all at this rate but Elijah wasn’t arguing as Tatia eased back in for another kiss. His hand settled warm at the back of her neck, time spinning out again. Elijah’s eyes were warm as they drew apart, Tatia’s hand finding his as they headed out. A low sound rumbled in agreement in the back of his throat. She wasn’t wrong. The trip across the square was quick enough, the queue would be too if the rate it moved at as they joined it’s end was anything to go by. ”I could take on a thousand villains more easily than I could a thousand teenagers,” he said honestly, a thread of humour in his voice. Villains, vampires, anything else that went bump in the night in this town. Another small sound as they backed up towards the door, his hand still wrapped around hers. ”Even almost killed by them all sounds like torture,” Elijah griped. There were torments worse than death but, Elijah thought with a sigh, this wasn’t even close to the worst of them. Every time the world had moved on they played catch up, never slipping out of the groove they’d been left in when they had been turned.
The moment they slipped through the door music shivered over his skin. People were already dancing in the usually crowded confines of the place, neon paint already on skin flashing in the blacklights that pierced the crowd from overhead. There was a booth at the door, wristbands held out. Others seemed to hover for a moment before picking but Elijah was already reaching for the wristband – taken. Elijah left his fingers around Tatia’s wrist for a moment before she returned the favour. ”With you, never,” he promised. On the night of the prom they’d worked their way out onto the dance floor and had spent most of their night out there, wrapped up in one another. Tonight it looked like they were going to ease in the same way. ”Always.” The promise sounded against as he used his light grip on Tatia’s wrist to tow her out among those bodies. ”Is this dipping our toe in before we get ourselves lit up like fireworks?” The question rolled out with a chuckle. Elijah wrapped his arms around her, fingers tracing the lines he would take with the paintbrush.

Tatia knew that there was no way that Elijah was ever going to feel comfortable at an event like tonight and that was why she had given him the chance to change his mind. It had sounded like fun to her when she had heard about it and she had wanted to share that with the man she loved but for a while she had wondered if perhaps this time she was asking too much. Elijah seemed determined to go, though, and she really hoped that it wouldn’t end up being as bad as he thought it would be when they got there. She knew that she wanted Elijah to have fun that night but if he didn’t then she knew that she wouldn’t make him stay. They could easily go back to her place or to his and just spend some time together and she would be happy with that so she knew that either way they would work something out. Warmth spread through Tatia as Elijah’s hand ran over the small of her back before finding her waist as she kissed him and she felt a smile touch her lips at Elijah’s words. “I know you can. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for,” she assured him gently. She knew that Elijah could do anything that he set his mind to, he had been through so much and no matter what life threw at him he always endured. That was one of the things she admired most about him and she really was grateful to him for that. “That doesn’t matter to me, I know I’ll love whatever you do,” she said, pressing her lips against his once more before she grabbed her bag and took his hand. She knew that she needed to stop distracting Elijah but that really was much easier said than done. Soon though they were on their way and it wasn’t long before they were there. “Teenagers are easy in comparison, trust me,” she grinned, already having been through that during her time at high school. “Besides, it won’t be all teenagers. Stefan and at least a few of the others will be there and some of your family might be too,” she offered, hoping that would help at least a little. She knew it really wouldn’t be as bad as Elijah thought it would be but she wanted to reassure him nonetheless. Tatia hadn’t expected to find different coloured wristbands by the door but she couldn’t deny that she was pleased that Elijah automatically went for the one that signified that she was taken and she did the same. “That’s one of the many things I love about you,” she admitted with a smile as they headed inside. There was a time when she hadn’t been sure what to do about her feelings for Elijah but not a day went by now when she wasn’t glad that she had decided to embrace them. “It’s becoming our thing,” she admitted as they headed out to where others were already dancing. She knew that it was to be expected at something like this but at prom they had ended up dancing the night away and it had been like everyone and everything else had melted away and she wouldn’t be surprised if the same ended up being true now. “It is,” she nodded, wrapping her arms around him as they started to dance. “Is it working?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

There might have been more weaknesses in all of them than they were willing to admit, but Elijah had seen the core of steel in all of his siblings, had allowed himself to rebuild his life around his own when the chance was offered. Without it all they might have just submitted to the sharp end of Mikael’s determination to kill them centuries ago. It took a strength to pick themselves up and keep running each time, just as much strength to decide to stop now. Whatever came – and it surely would with their father and aunt leading the charge – they would draw on that strength together. An unstoppable force capable of so much more than just a night like tonight, although that would do for a start.
Elijah smiled against Tatia’s mouth, his brows rising slightly as he ran his knuckles lightly into the dip of her spine. He had told her a thousand times what she had done for him and meant every word of it. ”Stronger because of you, and moments like this.” Even in the thousand years that she had been gone she had never been far from his mind. His fingers had trailed then, following the lines that his brush soon would. ”My muse,” he said, knowing that was very much what she was, his strength, his muse, his heart.
There were likely those in the crowd at the party who would’ve spoken as he had right before they left. The love in their hearts no less felt but fleeting as his own had been before he had truly seen her. Connections made and lost as fast as a revolving door. Minds, hearts and bodies still only part formed. Elijah looked around dubiously as they stepped side, a light laugh of distrust rumbling from him. ”It’s been some time since I’ve truly been one but I’m not sure if I entirely believe you,” he crooned lightly. He wouldn’t have admitted it aloud but he was glad there would be others closer to his own age than the scant handful of years of most here. ”They’ll be a relief from the nightmare at least.” The humour grew, the stiffness easing out of his shoulders as he looked about the place. At least most were so consumed with one another that the pairings weren’t spilling too far into one another.
The bands, Elijah imagined, as he slipped the one around Tatia’s wrist, were a way of putting up those dividing lines at least. An instant notification in the crowd whether an attempt made at forging a new connection was worth it. Certainly not here, although he took Tatia’s wrist in case as they worked their way through the crowd. ”My willingness to humiliate myself on every dance floor in town?” Elijah joked, raising a brow, grinning as they slipped onto the dance floor. ”It’s truly a gift, especially when we can be like this … like we were when I first fell for you.” He remembered the way she’d spun towards him, her hair, braided but flying free as she’d met his eye. Elijah spun her the same way now, flashes paint on dancing bodies like twinkling lights around them. ”It is,” he admitted, his voice a low rumble in her ear as he drew her back into him. ”I want to see you lit up with my touch for all to see.” His fingers trailed over her back again, light as feathers as he found bare skin. He traced the lines he would paint over her, dipping around the edges of hems, up the delicate column of her throat.

“In that case I’m glad I could be of assistance, my love,” Tatia said, a smile touching her lips as Elijah ran his knuckles over her back. She knew that he was much stronger than he knew, after all he had kept going for the best part of a thousand years after she’d died before she was brought back but they did make each other stronger and she wasn’t afraid to admit that. Whenever she found herself in doubt she just had to think about what Elijah would do and that wasn’t going to change. As he called her his muse, Tatia felt her cheeks flush red. “I love you,” she said gently. She had loved another before Elijah but their time together had been cut short and she had found herself blessed with a love that was deeper than any she had ever felt before and it really had stood the test of time. As Elijah said it had been some time since he was truly a teenager, Tatia couldn’t help but laugh. “Technically it has been a long time since I was one too but trust me, you made it through going to prom with me and you’ll make it through this too,” she assured him. Tatia had already made it into her twenties by the time she’d died so it had been over a thousand years since she had last been a teenager as well. She had enjoyed her time going to school with Elena, Stefan and the others, though, and even though it was clear to her that Elijah was nervous she knew that he would enjoy the blacklight party once he was there. “If you ever find yourself getting overwhelmed just focus on me. You help me block out what is going on around me when I’m with you and hopefully I’ll be able to do the same for you.” She was glad that so many of the others would be there as well and she hoped that some more might make a surprise appearance too. Looking down at Elijah’s hand as he took her wrist, Tatia’s expression softened. “You do know that I’m not interested in anyone here but you in that way, don’t you?” she asked, not wanting Elijah to feel worried in the least. Ever since they met it had only ever been him and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. “That’s why I enjoy going to things like this, it reminds me of that night,” Tatia admitted, bringing her hand up and letting it rest lightly against his cheek for a moment before he spun her around. “I know you only do things like this for me a lot of the time but I really do appreciate it,” she assured him. Going to prom together had been out of Elijah’s comfort zone but this was even more so and she really did appreciate the way he was always so willing to go along with it for her. Tatia’s arms wrapped around his neck as they danced now, drawing herself even closer to Elijah in a way she wouldn’t have dreamed of doing back when they’d danced together before she’d died. As Elijah said he wanted to see her lit up with his touch for everyone to see and his fingers trailed over her back before they continued to wander, Tatia felt a pleasant shiver run down her spine. “In case you haven’t noticed, you have that effect on me already,” she said, her eyes full of nothing but love for Elijah as they danced. “Are you ready to give the paint a try?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

She had ‘assisted’ him more than she could ever know. Losing her to those early, monstrous stirrings of his hunger had torn something inside of him that had taken a thousand years to heal, but even as that wound inside of him had filled the hollow she had left with the blood of those he continued to kill (each with a reason that had made it seem necessary at the time), Tatia had continued to give. That brief taste of love had left some part of his heart open, where it may have sealed itself off for good. Her pride in her son, her determination not to let her life be forfeited by the constraints of the society in which they’d lived. She was a survivor, a fighter, a saint. He could’ve reeled off every attribute that had given him strength in those moments of weakness but Elijah knew there were not enough words to tell her of them all.
His lips touched the corner of her mouth, the cheek that flushed bright under his praise, her temple. Flattening his hand against her back, Elijah pulled her in, touching his lips to the shell of her ear. He had loved her for a thousand years and would love her for a thousand more. ”I love you too. I always have.” The first and the last to hold his heart. When he had fallen in love with her he had been only a few years past being a teenager, innocent enough not to have had a clue of the darkness that would soon come. Their lives hadn’t seemed, or been, easy then, but there had been a promise to it all that had taken all this time to return. ”Technically,” he murmured with some amusement as he smiled at her. ”I appreciate your confidence. I’m living all of this vicariously through you.” And not complaining about a moment of it, especially when he got to see her light up the way she had on the night of the prom, and again now. That made every moment of awkwardness worthwhile. Elijah hummed in agreement to Tatia’s suggestion. ”Let the whole of the rest of the world fall away,” he crooned lightly. Probably not so easy in a room full of hyped up teens, but always possible.
Elijah’s smile softened as he looked over at Tatia, his grip too. His fingers slid gently over the tender skin of the underside of her wrist. An affection touch as well as an affirming one. ”I know,” he promised, his smile twitching. ”I have known since that night just what you felt.” A young man’s certainty that had stuck. Tatia had chosen him over all the others, including his own brother. Niklaus’ feelings had been stung again, another slap to the face for one who had suffered so much already but there was no changing what had developed. Elijah felt her touch on his skin, basked in that feeling as they spun to the music. ”Your hair flew them, you smile too, right to my heart.” Whirling through the crowd, breathlessly with what he had started to feel Both of them lit by the bonfire, inside and out. Elijah spun her back into him, his arms sliding around her waist. ”I’ve noticed, and felt the same.” Filled with the glow that chased the darkness the Mikaelsons were shrouded in from him. ”You really want to see me lit up … absolutely. As long as I get to return the favour.” He slid his hands up her back, running fingertips lightly down Tatia’s arms in the lines he would draw.

Tatia felt a smile touch her lips as Elijah’s lips moved from the corner or her mouth to her cheek and then on to her temple. It still amazed her how he could be so loving and so gentle after everything that he had been through, she knew that there was another side to him, a protective side that kicked in when it had to, but she loved everything about him and she knew that she always would. As Elijah pulled her closer to him Tatia didn’t offer any resistance and simply wrapped her arms around his neck, enjoying the feeling of having him so close. “I know. I’ve always loved you too,” she said gently before leaning forward and pressing her lips against his. For a while her heart had been torn between Elijah and Nik, she’d had feelings for them both but in the end it was Elijah that had worked his way into her heart and she knew that he would always be the one for her. She hadn’t thought that she would ever find someone else after her husband died considering it wasn’t the done thing not to follow your husband into the afterlife back then let alone find love again but she had forged her own path and somehow fate had brought her back to Elijah so she knew better than to take that for granted. As Elijah said he appreciated her confidence, Tatia felt a smile touch her lips. “I have faith in you, that’s all,” she assured him. “You don’t need to do that tonight, you’re going to experience all of this just like I am.” She hoped that Elijah would end up enjoying himself despite his reservations and she knew that she would do whatever she could in order to make it fun for him. As he spoke again, her smile widened. “It always does when I’m with you,” Tatia admitted as she leaned forward and pressed her lips against his gently. Looking down at their hands for a moment as Elijah’s fingers glided over her wrist, Tatia lifted her gaze to meet his and felt her smile return as he said he had known how she felt since that night. “My love for you has never changed nor will it ever,” she said, bringing her free hand up and letting it rest against the back of his neck where her fingers ran lightly through his hair. “As far as I’m concerned there is only you. You’re the one I want to have a future with.” There was a time before she died when that had been called into question but those days were long gone now. She had never wanted to hurt Niklaus but Tatia had known that she’d had to follow her heart and her heart belonged to Elijah. “I remember. I think that was the first time I’d ever seen you truly let go and have fun like that,” she admitted. “I fell in love with you even more that night.” Dancing with Elijah now very much reminded her of that night and it was enough to bring a smile to her lips. He seemed to spin her around so effortlessly and Tatia was more than happy to follow his lead, her arms winding their way around his neck once more as his arms slid around her waist. His next words were enough to have her expression softening and Tatia kissed his cheek lightly before nodding as he said she could paint him as long as he got to return the favour. “Definitely, I’m looking forward to it,” she assured him, her skin tingling pleasantly where his fingers ran down her arm. Catching his hand in hers once it was low enough, Tatia led him in the direction of the tables containing the paint and picked up a paint brush. “Which colour would you like?” she asked as she turned back to look at him. If he had been able to truly save Katerina from Niklaus’ temper, would things have been different now? She had managed to start unlocking something in him, over five hundred years perhaps there would have been some shift, some laying to rest of his feelings for the first woman he had known with that face. The universe – and Niklaus – had spoken, leaving Katerina on the run and what may have been as shattered and bloody as his burgeoning relationship with Tatia had ended up being. The doors had swung shut on his heart again for years, remaining mostly closed until Tatia’s hands had wrapped around them, tearing them open and revealing everything that had been shut up for so long. What might have been vanished in an instant, for what might happen now and Elijah wrapped all of that in his own hands, protecting what he would not be able to bear to lose for a third time.
His lips curbed, his smile – the unguarded one that was just for her – pressed against Tatia’s as she kissed him. He didn’t need to hear the words, he knew them already, had felt them in his bones in those years they’d had together once again. Still, it was nice to hear them time and again, a stamp of emotion that deepened the certainty that she felt for him as he did for her. ”I feel your faith, as much as your love,” he assured Tatia, his voice low, rough edged as he drew back far enough to look into the velvet depths of her eyes. Elijah squinted faintly, his laughter rumbling out as he glanced around. ”Then it will be a first for both of us, again.” Unexpected after so many years of life, but something that should be savoured, even if it meant trying to scrub neon paint from himself when he went back to being stuffy Elijah of the pristine suits. Elijah looked back to Tatia, his smile emerging slowly again, shining with pride at the edges. It didn’t matter if they were in a room of thousands, one look, one kiss, and it would shrink down to just two again. Elijah allowed himself to sink into the kiss, the world blurring just as he’d said it would, dimming at the edges until all the light he saw came from her.
It had dimmed at the edges for another reason when he had found her on the road and the truth of his crimes had spilled from her lips. Elijah had felt something tear open inside of him at the revelation. Over their years together it had slowly scarred over, a permanent reminder that he was as fallible as any of his siblings, but no longer crippling. ”I am glad to hear it all the same,” he rasped softly. Elijah raised their joined hands, pressing his lips to Tatia’s knuckles as her hand curled around the back of his neck. ”We will not waste a single moment of that future. Not even if they are like tonight." Amusement lit Elijah up now, like the bonfire had then, lending colour to cheeks that didn’t often hold much of it now.
He grinned, laughing low as he shook his head. ”I took out my stuffing for the night,” he quipped. There had been so many expectations weighing upon him then, the knowledge of how Mikael’s temper would flare if his sons were not just as he had planned for them to be. Mikael’s expectations were now shattered and he was free to live life through his own, starting with this. Elijah hummed lightly, his dark eyes narrowing as Tatia promised he could paint her the same way that she would him, leading him from the dance floor to the table. ”I would have run from anything too garish, but I don’t think there’s anything but that … purple perhaps.” The colour of royalty, some would probably find some symbolism in that.

Tatia knew that she had missed out on so much when she’d died, there was so much that Elijah had experienced that she had yet to but the truth was that so far she was enjoying every moment of the life that she had now. She was always going to regret the fact that she hadn’t been there to watch Lukas grow up but he’d had Athena watching over him and he had turned into a fine man so she knew that she couldn’t be prouder of him, or Axel either for that matter. They had both been through so much but they had come out of it the other side. They were survivors, just like she was. When she was brought back she had never imagined that she would get to be with Elijah again but she truly cherished their time together and it was a relief to know that they wouldn’t have to worry about death tearing them apart again. Now she was an Original Vampire too so they could be together without having to worry about anything like that and it was a relief to say the least. “As you should because both are stronger than ever,” Tatia said, a smile forming on her face as she looked up at Elijah. She wasn’t sure what their future together was going to look like, she knew that having kids could never be on the cards for them but she couldn’t deny that she liked the idea of settling down with Elijah one day. She had been married once before but her husband had died and she hadn’t given much thought to going through that again but for Elijah she knew that she wouldn’t hesitate. “I always like it when we get to experience new things together,” she admitted. Elijah had showed her so much since she had been brought back but there was always something so special about knowing that they were doing something that he hadn’t done before either. So much had passed between them and they’d both had to come to terms with some things but at the end of the day Tatia knew that she loved Elijah unconditionally and forgiving him for what had happened when she’d died was something that she had done with ease once she had managed to get her head around it. She didn’t regret that one bit because if she hadn’t done then she knew that they wouldn’t be here now and even if they were in a room surrounded by people with loud music she wasn’t sure she would ever completely get used to playing, she knew that she still wouldn’t have it any other way. “Then I will have to make sure I tell you more often,” Tatia said, a smile touching her lips as Elijah kissed her knuckles. “I like the sound of that,” she added with a grin as Elijah said that they wouldn’t waste a moment of that future. Tatia had come so close to not having one again when she had insisted she be used in the ritual to free Nik’s werewolf side rather than Elena so she knew just how precious that time was. “Well I’m glad you did, I think I fell more in love with you that night,” Tatia admitted, a laugh escaping her lips as she looked over at Elijah. She had known that she’d had feelings for him before that but seeing him relax and have some fun for once had given her the chance to see a different side of him and it was one that she loved. The idea of being painted like this was so far out of Elijah’s comfort zone but he seemed to want to go along with it for her and that meant the world to her. Truth be told it was out of Tatia’s comfort zone as well but she knew that she wanted to enjoy everything that the night had to offer and that included this. “Are you sure I couldn’t tempt you with a nice neon pink?” Tatia teased, a smile playing its way across her face before she reached for the purple paint and a clean brush. “Purple it is,” she said, reaching forward and running the backs of the fingers of her free hand lightly over his bicep. “Just your arms?” she asked, knowing that she didn’t want to push him out of his comfort zone too much. For centuries his family had been fractured, left open to those who would try and destroy them by wedging themselves into those cracks and forcing them open. Elijah hadn’t been sure whether his family gathering here in Mystic Falls, whether the birth of his nephew and nieces, was a sign that those fractures had started to heal. The only things he was sure of was that it had given him hope, and the first woman he had ever loved. If there was anyone to hold those parts of him that could, and likely would, still crumble together, it was Tatia. Her assurance that they were both stronger than ever had him pressing a smiling kiss against Tatia’s cheekbone, another against her temple. ”I love you,” he whispered softly into that tender spot. ”Even if this is one of the new things you managed to pick out.” New for him, yes, but in those things he had already seen in some way, it felt good to see them again through Tatia’s eyes, to know that there was still wonder and joy to be found in this world.
She had never been shy to show him what she wanted, to take that for herself. When her husband had died she had shunned what should have been and had opened her heart to him. He had crushed it once, had pushed the memory of it from his mind at Esther’s urging, to protect himself and his siblings. A broken man would not have been able to do what he had been forced to over the centuries. Now he held it as gently as he did Tatia as they swayed to the music – the beat of it, the rhythm the others seemed to be able to move to honestly beyond him. Elijah unfurled Tatia’s hand, pressing a second kiss to her palm, a third to the soft skin of the underside of her wrist. ”I’ll never tire of hearing it. Or of opening myself up to all of this for you. That is a promise.” One that had him laughing as someone whooped in the crowd, leaving him drawing Tatia closer as the place seemed to shift and swirl around them. He might still have had the body of a young man, but his mind, and his energy, somewhat, had certainly taken on an older air than theirs.
The paint, the pounding of drums, would not have been too far out of the ordinary on the night they had come together at the feast in the village. People had always been drawn to colour, to the rhythms they’d first felt and heard in their own bodies. There would have been less flesh on show, of course, but it had never been that he had fallen for. It had been the light in Tatia’s eyes, the joy he’d seen shine there that she turned on him with a smile. ”So, your heart was already mine then?” he asked lightly, knowing that Niklaus had hoped for the same then, Tatia’s heart a bone of contention between them as Katerina had been centuries later. Then there had been no shame in taking her hand, now as she reached for the paint, Elijah grimaced, letting a pained groan. ”That may be braver than I give myself credit for. How about we start slow?” The purple was just far enough outside of his comfort zone. Elijah settled his hand just beneath Tatia’s arm, twitching his arm beneath her touch as his gaze rolled up to hers. ”As far as you would choose to go,” he told her lightly. His thumb was already brushing the underside of her arm, tracing where his own lines would go, even if he didn’t have his younger brother’s eye for the artistic.

Tatia knew that she shouldn’t have the chance to live a life like this but it had been given to her and she knew better than to take that for granted. Her life had come to an end a thousand years ago when Elijah had lost control and killed her and while she regretted the fact that she hadn’t been there to watch Lukas grow up and she hadn’t been able to have the future with Elijah that she had always wanted, she had the chance to do both of those things now and she was taking it. For a while she had shut herself off from Elijah while she had tried to process everything but those days were long gone now. The two of them were together and she knew that that was just as it should be. She had never been the kind of person to hold a grudge and she hadn’t been about to start now, the people that she cared about most were in Mystic Falls and she was fortunate enough to be with them where she belonged so she knew that she wanted to make the most of every moment she had. Now she was an Original Vampire thanks to Henrik figuring out how to replicate the spell his mother had cast a thousand years before so she had an eternity ahead of her and that was something that she wanted nothing more than to spend with the people she loved. As Elijah said that he loved her, a smile touched Tatia’s lips and she felt her heart flutter in her chest. “I love you too,” she said, not a hint of doubt in those words. She had always loved Elijah and she was certain that she always would. “It is but next time it’s your turn to pick out something new for us to do,” Tatia offered, knowing that whatever Elijah decided that he wanted to do, she would go along with it. She had learned so much during the time that she had been back and she had experienced so much. There was still so much that she had yet to see but she really was looking forward to doing all of that with Elijah. Dancing with Elijah like this was something that she had thought would never happen again when she first came back but now they were able to have moments like these and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her expression softened as Elijah kissed her palm and then her wrist and her free hand found his chin as she lifted it and pressed a kiss to his lips. “I’ll hold you to that,” Tatia said, her head resting against Elijah’s chest as he drew her closer to him and her arms wrapped a little tighter around him. There was still so much that they could do and Tatia knew that she wanted to experience it all with Elijah. Hearing Elijah ask if her heart was already hers back then was enough to make Tatia’s smile return. “Elijah, my heart has always been yours,” she assured him gently. “I may love Niklaus but not in the way he wanted me to back then because I’m in love with you. Always have been, always will be.” For a while she had enjoyed the attention of both brothers and she had certainly enjoyed flirting with them both but it was Elijah who had captured her heart and that wasn’t going to change. “I was only joking,” Tatia laughed, unable to stop herself at his reaction to her joke about going for a neon pink. “Pink wouldn’t suit you but purple is another matter entirely,” she assured him before her expression turned thoughtful for a moment as he said that she could go as far as she wanted to. “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable and to be honest I don’t particularly like the idea of the women around here seeing you without your shirt in case they get any ideas so just your arms it is,” she said, knowing that she already had to put up with enough women looking at Elijah whenever they were out together. He had always been incredibly handsome and she wasn’t the only one who saw that already without adding anymore fuel to the fire. He was already stepping out of his comfort zone as it was so she knew better than to push him too far by going for his neck or face either so she knew to keep it simple. Dipping the brush into the paint, she started tracing patterns over his arms, taking her time and making sure that she was completely happy before setting the brush back down. “What do you think?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON
