The world had been their oyster. Opened up by what Esther had done to them, kept open by determination alone every time one of his siblings would try and shut it down to the tiny pocket that would give them what they wanted for just a fleeting moment. If they had remained with the de Martels none of them would have made it this far, Mikael would have found them eventually. At a hundred moments since their lives had teetered there, the decision to stay or go hanging in the air, what they wanted so desperately a pearl that might have been hidden in the depths of that oyster. There had never been a guarantee, not until now. With their return to this town Elijah had seen their world shrink back down to the place they had started from. Now there was no doubt in his mind that each of them had found that elusive pearl here. His would shine for him before they were done tonight, lit up under the lights in this place. If that ended up being a lure to lead Mikael here in the same way the presence of Niklaus and Henrik’s children were bringing Dahlia to this place, then so be it. They were not as weak as they had once been, none of them were.
Elijah had seen the strength in Tatia long before she had been made as they were by Henrik’s spell, had known she had a core of it centuries before that, when he had first falling in love with her. Now his world was opening up with her, the steps they took outside of the shell of it the next time apparently under his guidance. His smiled against her skin, a kiss laid in that spot a moment later. ”You may just regret making that offer,” he teased. Whatever he eventually settled on would not be as bad as this … although perhaps it would end up outside of Tatia’s own comfort zone. He would take her hand in his, like he did now, reassuring her with those gentle brushes of his lips against her palm, her lips. ”You better,” he mused lightly, knowing she would never have to. If they never had to break from this, he would be an eternally happy, an eternally blessed man.
When Niklaus had taken Tatia for the ritual, he had wondered whether it was partly out of punishment for her heart being handed to his brother, his rival. Niklaus had loved her just as much as he had, the two of them vying for her attention in equal measures until that night. Elijah settled his hand at her cheek for a moment, his thumb sweeping the line of her cheekbone. ”As I have always been in love with you. I cannot fix my brother’s heart for him, only hope that he one day finds something of this for himself.” It hadn’t been there between Hayley and Niklaus, not even after they realised they had managed to produce a miracle. The artist in his brother would’ve taken great joy in this, scrawling on every available body in a way that was more than just the swipes and swirls he himself would manage. Elijah looked at the pot in Tatia’s hands, then back up at her face. ”Purple always was the colour of royalty. Perhaps we can add some green later … for the jealousy,” he teased. He had no eyes for anybody else in the place, as Tatia would have for nobody but him.
Like a statue, he stood for Tatia, turning one way and then the other for her to trace her lines over his arms. The crowd swelled and moved around them to the music, flashes of their own neon paint jobs coming and going in the darkness. Elijah held his arms out spread as the paint dried, his gaze trailing up and down the designs Tatia had traced on his skin. ”I’d say that perhaps Niklaus has some competition,” he drawled lightly. ”How do I look?” Turning on the spot, he let those neon purple lights writhe and dance under the lights. ”I should return the favour … pick your poison?” HE lifted his chin towards the paint pots, already mapping out the lines he would trace with both fingers and the paintbrush.

Tatia knew that an event like this was out of Elijah’s comfort zone and the truth was that it was out of hers as well. It had taken her a long time to get used to being around so many people and even now the amount of people and the loud music could be a little overwhelming but it wasn’t as bad as it once was. Now the idea of being able to spend the night dancing with Elijah was something that she was looking forward to and she really hoped that he was as well. Elijah sometimes pretended to protest when she suggested something but he always went along with it and she knew that was because he loved her. She knew that she was asking him to do something that he might not necessarily feel comfortable with, after all even getting him to wear something other than a suit wasn’t easy, but she hoped that he didn’t mind for one night. As he said she might just regret letting him choose what they did next time, Tatia couldn’t help but laugh. “Of course I won’t, I trust you,” she grinned. She knew next time they might end up doing something that was even further out of her own comfort zone but she knew that it would be fine as long as she had Elijah by her side. “I will,” she assured him gently. “I hate to break it to you but you’re stuck with me now.” There was a time when Tatia could have died again in any number of ways when she was human but Henrik had made her an Original Vampire so now she didn’t have to worry about that. Now she had a long life ahead of her with Elijah and she knew that there wasn’t anyone else that she would rather share it with. Perhaps she should have said something about which brother it was who had captured her heart earlier but the truth was that she really hadn’t known how. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that Elijah was the one for her, though, and as he let his hand rest against her cheek Tatia found herself leaning into his touch. As Elijah said that he had always been in love with her, Tatia’s heart fluttered in her chest. “I think a part of me has always known that but I’ll never get tired of hearing you say it,” she admitted. “I hope so too, he deserves to be happy,” Tatia nodded as Elijah said that hopefully Niklaus would find some happiness for himself one day. She knew that Niklaus hadn’t had it easy but she really did hope that one day he would find someone he could give his heart to. “Best not, I don’t think those two colours would go together very well,” she teased, an amused expression forming on her face as he eyes met Elijah’s. “We’ll keep that to ourselves.” Tatia could already see the way others looked at Elijah and while she knew that she didn’t have to worry about anything with him she still couldn’t help but feel jealous. “Can you really blame me for feeling that way though?” she asked, tracing her fingers lightly over his arms. She loved Elijah and always had done so she knew she was never going to like anyone looking at Elijah the way that some of the women around Mystic Falls did. Painting someone was definitely a new experience for Tatia and she knew that it would be the same when it was Elijah’s turn to paint her. For now she knew that she needed to focus on what she was doing, though, and she tuned everyone else out while she did just that, grateful for the way Elijah moved his arms to assist her. “It’s definitely not to his standard but I think you look really handsome,” Tatia admitted, a smile touching her lips as she leaned forward and kissed him, making sure not to touch any of the paint while it dried. She knew that the patterns weren’t anything special but she was grateful to Elijah for going along with it nonetheless. As he said he should return the favour before asking her to pick a colour, Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Why don’t you surprise me?” she asked, knowing that she would much rather see what colour Elijah thought would suit her best and what he would do with it. With Tatia’s return had come the memories, the pleas torn from his throat, the desperate need to have his mistake fixed. Esther had slapped a band aid over the wound, sealing it off so he wouldn’t slowly bleed out from it, his heart torn clear through. It didn’t nothing to fix his mistake. He hadn’t been able to bring Tatia back, hadn’t believed it was possible until she was right there in front of him. Elijah wouldn’t wish away what had happened now, he could regret, but not squander his time on what might have been. Neither one of them was planning on losing what they did have now to dwell in regret.
He grinned slowly at her, dark eyes warm in the dim light. Elijah shook his head, not in denial of being stuck with her, but warding off the idea that there would ever be a problem with it. ”I don’t think stuck would be the word. It’s right where I want to be.” Now that Tatia was immortal, as they were, that chance of an eternity with the woman he loved was right there in his grasp. Nights like this would eventually grow familiar, the strictly defined lines of his life melting away until there was only the freedom to exist without that myriad of tiny issues constraining both of them.
Spending a thousand years trying to help his siblings negotiate them had likely done none of them any favours. One of the first wedges had been slipped between he and Niklaus when he had been the one to win Tatia’s heart. His brother’s life had already been twisted by Mikael by then, but Tatia’s loss after her breaking his heart had been an extra turn of the noose that had choked him ever since. ”You’ll have an eternity of hearing it now,” Elijah said hoarsely, pressing the words to Tatia’s lips in a kiss. Maybe Niklaus would eventually be so blessed, just as he had been with Hope. Elijah drew in a deep breath, nodding at her. ”They all do. May this be the chance for all of them.” Although the odds were against them, now they had more than ever to fight for though.
Amusement turned wry on Elijah’s lips. He tilted his head to one side, looking back down at the paint again before he sighed. ”I certainly don’t have Niklaus’ eye for colour. Painting has always been … beyond me.” Where Niklaus’ eye could capture the beauty in everything that flowed from his brushes, his own artistic skill had been in music – the hum of a bow across a violin’s strings, that quivering bass note of a piano’s hammers hitting its strings. Something of his own that had carried him through centuries of melancholy. Perhaps it had been too long since he had opened that black leather case, tomorrow maybe. His eyes followed the path of Tatia’s fingers over his arms. ”No more than I can blame myself for it when I see others captivated by you.” Love could make you selfish, could give your eyes that green cast as the most tender parts of you anticipated the blow of loss. It could almost make you feel like the luckiest man on earth, as he did now.
Niklaus would have turned each body he painted here into a masterpiece. Tatia’s efforts might not have been to his standard – as she said – but would be a definite cut above his own. Elijah chuckled lightly, looking back up at her. ”You’re biased,” he teased, not arguing with it a bit. Arrogance had never been his problem the same way it had been his siblings’. He couldn’t yet put a hand to her, not with the paint drying, but Elijah leaned into the kiss all the same, appreciation bleeding into it until he finally drew himself back to reach for one of the pots. ”Now, that might be a mistake. Green and purple, remember,” Elijah mused. He was not that blind to it all really. The pink paint clung to the edge of the pot, tiny flecks of it clinging to his fingertips. He dipped a brush in, carefully wiping it off against the edge of the pot before he stepped behind Tatia. Lowering his head, he pressed a kiss to the back of her neck before he began to paint a swirling, vine like pattern across her shoulders.

Had things worked out differently then Tatia knew that their life together would be very different to the one they had now. They would have raised Lukas together and perhaps had children of their own and they would have been happy but the time they would have had together would have been short compared to the life they could have now. Tatia had become an Original Vampire so that she wouldn’t be taken away from Elijah, Lukas and everyone else that she loved again and she stood by her decision. As a human she had been vulnerable, any number of accidents or illnesses could have cut her life short again and that was something that she hadn’t wanted any of them to go through again. Now they had a real chance at having a long life together and it was one that Tatia wanted to take. She knew that nights like this were completely out of Elijah’s comfort zone and they were out of hers as well but it was something that she had wanted to experience and she was glad that Elijah had decided to indulge her. “Good answer,” Tatia said, a smile touching her lips as she leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. “I’m right where I want to be as well.” There was a time when she had faced the choice between Elijah and Niklaus but in her heart she had known that it was always going to be Elijah. He was the one who had captured her heart all those years ago and her feelings for him were never going to change. As Elijah spoke again, Tatia felt her smile widen. “I like the sound of that,” she admitted, her arms winding around his neck and she kissed him back. There was never any question in her mind that Elijah was the one for her and she was looking forward to seeing what their life together was going to be like. “I hope so. If anyone deserves a break after everything they’ve been through, it’s you and your family,” she said gently. She knew that Henrik felt guilty that his actions had set in motion the chain of events that had resulted in his siblings becoming vampires in the first place and Tatia felt some guilt about the role that her blood had played in it as well but they couldn’t change the past so all they could do was try and make something of the future. “You always underestimate yourself, Elijah,” Tatia said gently, bringing her hand up and letting it rest against his cheek. “Besides, this doesn’t have to be perfect so you don’t need to worry. This is just for us.” She wasn’t expecting a masterpiece and she wasn’t expecting to be able to give Elijah one either. Her own designs were basic but she had fun doing it and she knew that that was the whole point. It didn’t really matter how any of it ended up looking because at the end of the day they were there for each other and not anyone else and that was something that she hoped that Elijah would remember. As he spoke again, her expression softened. “The difference being that when people look at me it could be because they think I’m Elena or Katherine. There is only one of you,” she said, her eyes meeting his as she spoke. Elijah was handsome and he always had been, so much so that it made her heart ache at times. She couldn’t blame others for looking at him the way he did and she was always going to feel a pang of jealousy but she knew that she was the one he chose to be with and that was what mattered. “Besides, you know I’ve only ever had eyes for you.”Tatia would be the first to admit that painting didn’t come naturally to her but she still enjoyed being able to trace the brush over Elijah’s skin and when he was done she couldn’t deny that she was pleased with the outcome. “Perhaps but I think I’m allowed to be,” she said, her smile returning as she kissed Elijah. It had taken them a long time to get to where they were now but Tatia was happy knowing that they had an eternity ahead of them and nothing could take that away from them now. “It won’t be, I know you’ll make the right choice,” she grinned. As he kissed the back of her neck it sent a pleasant tingle down her spine and she stayed still while he traced patters over her skin, eager to see what he had decided to go with but trusting him completely. Alone again he perhaps could have survived, but like he had done so before, Elijah would have found himself living a half life. The better part of him turning to smoke on another pyre. The nightmare of it had clung at the edges of his subconscious before they’d performed the spell to let Tatia live as one of them. It came with a cost that he wished he could’ve spared her from, but life was never dolled out blessings are perfect as that would have been. There would always be a cost and he was willing to pay every single one to remain here – with the woman he loved, not quite here. Elijah hummed contentedly as Tatia assured him she was just where she wanted to be as well. Their worlds were left right by their love for each other once again. For now.
It felt almost criminal to consider that it might ever be another way tonight, so Elijah pushed the thought away. They would have the eternity he’d just promised, and in that time he would never allow Tatia to forget how much he loved her. Life, even for them, was too short, you never knew when something would be your last chance. Elijah swayed there for a moment with his lips on Tatia’s, drifting on the tide of the kiss before he chuckled lightly – just a shiver of breath against her lips. ”Deserve rarely comes into it. While our aunt is out there, we have no real chance of a break. She may have gone quiet, but she’s still out there, just biding her time until she comes for Hope.” Then their family would pull together again. Until that time they were just caught in a holding pattern, waiting for the other shoe to drop, for that dark cloud to sweep in over them again. Until that time humour would cling, albeit in small enough doses that sometimes it was almost invisible. His smile brightened as he settled his hand over Tatia’s in reassurance. ”My talents lie in other creative pursuits, and I’m okay with that,” he assured her. ”I know that whatever I manage tonight will be appreciated – it’s the thought that counts, hmm?” And thought would go into the trail of the brush over Tatia’s skin, thought and love and perhaps a little of the claim they’d placed on one another with the bands that still glowed at their wrists. Most here would pay heed to them, he thought, as he glanced up from where Tatia was tracing the territory of his arms, but like at the prom, some would just see that claim as a challenge. Those were the ones he felt sorry for, they were unaware of just who they were messing with. ”They choose not to see you as I do,” he countered. ”Anybody who knows the three of you can tell, and when they look, it’s out of appreciation, not confusion.” But, as Tatia said – Elijah smiled down at her at the reassurance – that didn’t matter, because after her husband had died, he had been the only one she had ever looked at that way.
Elijah smirked into the kiss, his dark eyes narrowing. They were both allowed to be biased, it was all a part of the love they had for one another. ”I won’t argue with that.” Which meant that no matter what he painted on Tatia’s skin now she would love. He considered the choice for only a moment more before he started. He added small leaves to the vines, trailing the lines over the top of her shoulders to her collarbones, down her biceps. ”How much further do you want me to go?” he asked lightly, brushing his lips over clear skin in the wake of his brush.

Tatia knew that none of this should be possible, she had died over a thousand years ago and that should have been the end of her story but she had been given a second chance at life and now every day was a blessing as far as she was concerned. She knew that becoming a vampire, an Original Vampire at that, wasn’t necessarily what she had seen for herself but it was what she’d had to do in order to stay with the people she loved and she knew that she was never going to regret that. Lukas was immortal and she knew that she couldn’t leave her son behind again anymore than she could leave Elijah a second time. As a human she had been far too fragile and far too easy for something to happen to but now she was free to enjoy her life without having to worry about that and it really did mean the world to her. She wanted the people she loved to be happy and that included Elijah’s family as well. “Maybe so but when she does you’ll stop her and I’ll be there fighting by your side,” she assured him gently. Tatia knew that she had a lot to learn in that respect but Elijah meant the world to her and she knew that if there was anything she could do in order to stop his family from going through anymore heartache then she would do it without even thinking twice about it. “Until then you should all enjoy this,” she added, knowing that it could be a while before Dahlia made a move so it would be a shame for them all to waste it. “I know, you’re a musician at heart,” Tatia said, a smile touching her lips as her eyes met Elijah’s. Art had always been Niklaus’ outlet while Elijah’s had been music and that was just the way that it should be. “It’s definitely the thought that counts,” she nodded, knowing that it really didn’t matter to her what Elijah managed to do it was the effort that he would put into it that mattered. This was something that was so far out of both of their comfort zones and but they were giving it a try and she loved Elijah even more for indulging her in this. The bands on their wrists were signal enough of their relationship but there was something so different about being able to paint each other like this and Tatia couldn’t wait to see what he would come up with. Tatia knew that she had been building a life for herself ever since arriving in Mystic Falls and there were plenty of people who could tell the difference between her and her doppelgangers but there were always going to be those who couldn’t and she’d had to make her peace with that. “I’m glad they choose not to see me the way you do,” she admitted gently. “The games people play these days, they’re of no interest to me. You’re the only one who matters to me, it doesn’t matter how anyone else sees me,” she assured him. She knew that there were those who liked to try and lure others away from their partners but it wouldn’t work with her, she had only been in love twice in her life and Elijah was the one who had held her heart the longest by far. She loved Niklaus but not in the way he had once wanted her to and she knew that had caused a rift between the brothers but things seemed better now and she knew that she didn’t want anything to change that. Tatia wasn’t afraid to admit that she was biased when it came to Elijah, her love for him knew no bounds so she really didn’t mind what he went for that evening because she was certain that it would look great anyway. The feel of the brush moving over her skin was foreign to Tatia but it left a pleasant tingle wherever it touched and she watched Elijah in fascination as he worked, watching him rather than the design he was painting. As he asked how much further she wanted him to go, Tatia felt a smile touch her lips. “As far as you want to go, this is your design I’m merely your canvas.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

That was something that neither his parents nor his aunt truly understood. Family. Esther had given her old child away to have hers and still she had not learned that there were some prices you shouldn’t pay when you loved somebody. She had damned every one of her children on the day that she had struck her bargain with Dahlia. They had turned against those who had made them what they were, a solid wall despite the ugly differences that occasionally rose between them. For centuries they had withstood Mikael and his attempts at eradiating them and they would do the same when Dahlia eventually came for Hope. Elijah knew that if he had not harmed Tatia that night she would have stood beside him then too, but she would have been fragile, his mind split between dealing with the threat that was coming and protecting her from it. Things had now changed, he would still shield her when the time came though. As fierce as ever, Tatia would fight until the end. He loved her all the more for it. Elijah smiled at her wisdom. ”I promise I will. No more dwelling on what might come tonight.” Taking her hand, he drew it up to his lips, pressing a kiss to her palm to seal that promise.
A musician at heart, indeed. Elijah mock grimaced, glancing at the speakers as though offering comment on what supposedly passed for it here. He looked back, his grin returning. ”We’ll see if you’re saying that when you’re trying to decipher just what it is I’ve painted later.” As though he would get adventurous enough to create anything but lines and swirls. It would not be the same as putting his name upon Tatia, but in the band around her wrist and the paint on her skin there would be a claim of sorts, a visible representation of what had been there for a thousand years. Tatia saw him the way that no others ever truly had, and now he heard the reassurance in an echo of that thought in her words. ”And you to me,” he murmured. ”They can have our games and we will have one another.” For an eternity now that the spell had made Tatia as they were. Death would not part them again. Elijah could see the glow of the paint on his own skin out of the corner of his eye as he twirled the brush over Tatia’s. Her claim on him far prettier than the one he was laying on her. There would probably be traces of the paint on his lips after he trailed them over her skin but he didn’t care, it was just more evidence of what they were to one another. Elijah hummed lightly at Tatia’s words. ”You’re a beautiful canvas,” he murmured there against her skin. ”One I do need to do justice to.” His other hand was moving slowly though, baring a sliver of skin at her waist. The lines trailed down her forearm, across the back of her hand, her palm, then that patch of skin. Elijiah trailed it across her back, adding another leaf in the dip of her spine before starting back up the other side. A meandering path that was still unbroken as he eventually reached her jaw on the other side. Setting the pot of paint aside, he brushed his fingers just above that line around her waist. ”What do you think?” he asked, looking down critically at what he’d managed.

Tatia knew she was fortunate to have found her way back to the people she cared about, her life had come to an end a thousand years ago and it should have stayed that way but she had been brought back and she had been given another chance at having a life with Elijah and Lukas. She was truly grateful for that and for the people who had come into her life since then and she knew that she wouldn’t want it any other way. It still amazed her sometimes to think that she was an Original Vampire now and she would get to have forever with the people she loved, Henrik had made that possible for her and she knew that she wanted to make the most of every moment. They had so many people to fight for now and Tatia knew that she would stand by Elijah throughout all of it. She wasn’t a helpless human any longer, she could protect the people she loved and she knew that she would fight to protect them with everything she had. Not tonight, though. Tonight they were going to have some fun and Tatia knew she was going to make sure that Elijah had the chance to unwind for once. “I’m going to hold you to that promise,” she assured him. “You deserve to relax and have some fun for once even if you are out of your comfort zone tonight.” Elijah was always so serious and it had been that way back when he was human as well. She loved him for it but she also knew that there was more to life and she wanted to make sure that he got to see that too. “Whatever you paint it will be perfect, I assure you,” Tatia said, a smile touching her lips as she wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed a kiss to his lips. Before she died she never would have been that bold, back then there was a certain way in which she was expected to behave and Tatia had already gone against that when she had decided to stay with her son rather than following her husband onto his funeral pyre. She had been shunned then and it had taken time for those around her to start seeing her as she was rather than because of what she had chosen to do and it had taken her even longer to find love again. Now she had she knew that she wasn’t going to give it up. “Exactly. We only need each other and the people we love to be happy,” she said gently. She had spent such a long time on her own after she died and it had made her realise that she had to cherish every moment of the time she had with her loved ones. “I think you’re a little biased,” she teased as Elijah said that she was a beautiful canvas. Those words were still enough to bring a smile to her lips, though, and she let her free hand run through his hair as he painted her other wrist and arm. She never would have thought of doing this back when they were both human, back then the only painting that had been done had been war paint and she had seen enough of that when her husband went off to war to last her a lifetime. Now this was just for fun, it was something that they could do without having to worry about what anyone else thought and there were others they knew in attendance having a good time as well just like they were. Looking down at the design he had painted once he was done, Tatia’s smile widened. “It’s perfect, I love it,” she nodded. “Thank you for indulging me in this, it means more to me than you know,” she assured him gently, leaning forward and pressing her lips to his before taking his hands in hers. “Come on, let’s dance,” she said before leading him out onto the dance floor and losing herself in the events of the night. As Josie climbed off the stage and kissed Hope after singing Tatia was among those who cheered for her, glad that things seemed to be going just as well for Elijah’s niece. “I love you,” she breathed as she let her head rest against Elijah’s shoulder, knowing that she never felt happier than when she was in his arms like this.
