It was moments like this when Raik felt his age. Stood sober in a nightclub, watching people younger than him have the time of their life. The music was pumping through the air, to the point he could feel it pulsating within his bones. Drunk revellers staggering everywhere, trying to stay on their feet as they danced to the mind numbing music. He didn’t hate clubbing as such, just rather spend his time in a bar. Quieter and less crowded. Clubs were intimidating. So many people in such a small space, which made finding Remzi even more difficult. Raik got home that evening to find his brother had gone out, which was fine but also sent him into panic mode. Raik was trying his best to keep an eye on his brother, to avoid what happened in LA. He tried calling his sibling, but kept going through to answer phone. Eventually, he got a message from Remzi to say he was in the 'underground club'. He couldn’t get angry at his brother, because nighttime was literally the only time Remzi could actually go outside, so it was natural he wanted to leave their motel room. But a club? That didn’t sit right with Raik. He didn’t want his brother losing control and injuring people. After an hour of pacing back and forth around their compact motel room, Raik picked up his cell phone, wallet and keys and headed for this nightclub. Not to bring his brother home or anything, just to check he was okay. To check everyone around him was okay. Otherwise, he’d be pacing the room all night waiting for Remzi to come home covered in blood, just how he did that night in Las Vegas, explaining he couldn’t stop himself. The urge was too strong for him to fight it off. Raik was still trying his best to understand what his brother was going through, but couldn’t really comprehend it. This was a foreign world to the pair. Finding his sibling in the club was near impossible though. It was a Friday night, so obviously the place was rammed. Instead, Raik lingered in the corner, slowly drinking a whiskey and coke, his eyes scanning the area for a glimpse of his brother. If Remzi did anything would Raik even hear the screams above all this music? Probably not. He was trying his best to put faith in his brother that he wouldn’t be so stupid as to do something in a room full of people. Raik glanced down at his drink for a second, swirling the liquid around the glass before knocking the rest of the alcohol back. At least the whiskey was helping to calm him down, plus it was nice to get out of their motel room. As much as he loved his brother, it was difficult to share such a small space with him. Raik was a military man. He liked everything to be neat and organized whereas Remzi liked living in chaos. As soon as they arrived at the motel Raik made sure to lay some ground rules for the brothers. His sibling is to keep the mess on his side of the room. Even just looking at Remzi’s side of the room agitated him. “Hey… wow look at those arms” A female voice cut through the atmosphere. He didn’t even notice the blonde female lingering next to him, causing his head to jerk to the left suddenly. She reached up and squeezed his arm softly, “So muscly” She giggled, removing her hand, stepping a little closer to Raik. Her words were a little slurred, and as she stepped closer there was a slight sway in her body movement. His eyes drifted past the stranger and noticed her friends sat at a table nearby. They were glancing over every few seconds “Do you wanna dance?” Raik looked back down at the female. “No thank you… I’m just waiting for someone” He responded with a weak smile, which was partially true. Raik looked away from the blonde, still scanning for Remzi. He wasn’t even sure what he wasn’t going to say to his sibling if he found him. Admit that he had come out to keep an eye on him? Or join him for a drink? “Dance with me whilst you wait” The blonde took hold of Raik’s arm, trying to pull him towards the dancefloor. He shook his head lightly, “No, it’s okay. I’m waiting here for someone” He repeated, the female still tugging on his arm, but failing to move him. PHOEBE MURPHY

On tip toes, even with the help of the platform soles of her boots, Phoebe found she had to strain to lean across the bar. She winked at her brother, reaching out to pat his cheek in gratitude. Telling him thanks for the drinks would’ve been impossible with the thrash and bang of the music if his ears weren’t as good as her own. Senses straining he would’ve caught the ‘thanks’ that slipped from her lips as he set the two glasses she’d asked for down on the bar. Later she’d be back, abandoning Bev and the others again to linger at the end of the bar until the clock ran down in the early hours and she could drag her big brother out of here like he wasn’t the elder of the two of them – certainly not the most sensible.
Phoebe turned away, the drinks balanced on in each hand. She had to duck immediately as a giant of a man took her place, a thick arm swinging close enough over her head that he blotted out the strobing lights for a moment. Jesus. Letting out a pant of breath, she turned back, staring at him before she shot Lawrence an open mouthed look around the guy’s thick bicep. They didn’t make men like that often, the sort that seemed carved from stone, beasts of another age. Perhaps, given Mystic Falls’ ability to draw in the unusual he was a part of a bygone era. A dinosaur in the suparnatural sense, out of his own time but at home enough in this one to be ordering a White Russian as she stepped away.
Laughter bubbled in her throat as she shook her head and began the inevitable duck and weave back across the floor to where the others had congregated in a little knot around the table they’d managed to commandeer. It had become their place on the nights Lawrence was working, arguments over being tired of the place silenced with a look and that hovering threat that she would turn the polite request into something more if she had to. 80 years of not knowing if her brother had lived beyond the night their parents had shuffled him off out of the Valley with a little money and a ring to allow him out in the daylight, 80 years of missing him like an amputated limb had come to an end right here and Phoebe wasn’t about to let that chance to be around him again be stifled by a bunch of friends who would just get drunk and party anyway. It was all most here came to do anyway.
She sipped from one of the glasses, hips beginning to sway to the low beat of the music being hammered out by the band on the stage as she worked her way through the crowd. Drink, dance, desire. The Club plied people with all three. Some a little much.
Brown eyes crinkled at the corners with amusement as she saw one of her classmates, a blonde who held her vodka about as well as a sieve wheedle her way up to him. He’d been there when she’d gotten up to get the drinks, a tall, dark shadowy looming in the corner just a couple of yards from their table. Sipping at his drink at a snail’s pace, the glass empty now, held in those thick fingers as Joy bellied up to him. Hands attempting to wrap around an arm as thick as the guy’s at the bar had been. Not even close. Phoebe let out a low whistle, going to angle back to the table, leaving the poor sap to his fate.
Men like him didn’t last long in a place like this, too polite for the cut throat world of the club, too polite to spin the blonde around and push her back into the throng of writhing bodies on the dance floor. Far too polite. Sympathy, a little unexpected, rolled through her. Joy would latch on like a leech if he wasn’t careful, ignoring the no and only hearing what she wanted to. Phoebe bit her lip and turned back, glasses still clutched in her hands as she swept in, a White Knightess ready to protect his virtue.
She inched close, slipping one of the glasses she held into his empty hand. In a quick move she snagged the empty from him, shoved it at Joy with the sort of saccharine smile on her lips that left her looking at the two of them like something with a third head had just appeared. ”There you are sweetheart. I dreaded to think where you’d wandered off to. Looks like you made a friend while I was gone. Joy … why don’t you take this back to the bar, see if my brother will pour you another.” The blonde’s hands closed around the glass, confusion still swimming in unfocused eyes.
Phoebe sighed, rolling her eyes slightly as she nudged Joy around, bouncing her back into the fray with a bump of her hip. The smile was back as she turned back. Hazel eyes narrowed shrewdly up at that handsome face, its lines highlighted by the thick scruff of beard and the hair that was probably as long as her own pulled back. All the better to show off those cheekbones. She lifted her chin towards the glass she’d handed him. ”You looked like you could do with that.” Behind her she heard uncertain footsteps again, a dubious sound. Phoebe’s eyes slipped shut, a silent prayer for hormone driver idiots fluttering through her mind. She looped an arm around Raik’s neck, nodded for him to get his free hand on her as she rose on her toes, her voice low enough Joy wouldn’t hear her. ”She’s got a brick thick skull. She won’t get it if you don’t. Will you Joy?” Her voice rose, her hair tumbling as she glanced over her shoulder. The other girl was standing there, her lips pursed with something approaching envy erasing that confusion.

A few unanswered texts caused the older Durmaz to throw his jacket on head down to the Underground Club. Raik wasn't even intending on getting drunk, so waiting in the queue for 10 minutes to get a drink seemed pretty pointless, yet he did it anyway. Clutching on his rum and coke as he made his way through the sea of people to a quieter corner of the club. Setting himself up on the lookout for his young brother, as always. Vampire or not, Raik felt like he was always looking out for his sibling, but that was the job of being the older brother. Even when he was away from home on tour, he would still worry about his sibling, especially when he got the news of the drug overdose. Remzi assured him it was nothing serious, mom was overreacting about the situation as per usual. Raik didn't buy Remzi's story, but let it lie, and it didn't stop the paid engaging in such behaviour on their road trip. At the start of the trip, Raik was determined to see more of America, having spent most of his life in Detroit or overseas, but his brother had other things in mind. He wanted to help Raik 'relax' and stop being uptight. Alcohol and illicit substances were something that could help with that, according to Remzi of course. He couldn't help but feel he could have done something to prevent his brother from dying that evening. He didn't even hear his sibling leave their rented apartment in the middle of the night, keen to carry on the party. If only he stayed up later instead of giving in to sleep. It was something that plagued Raik’s mind. Somewhat blaming himself for what had happened, feeling like he had failed in his role as big brother. Failed to keep his sibling safe at all costs. Raik hated failure, it stuck with him, unable to accept the fact people screw up sometimes. Just how he’d failed to save some of those children in that school. A decision had to be made in that moment. Save those who could be saved. Some were too far gone. Now Raik was lingering in the background, making sure he doesn't do anything too stupid, such as wander through the streets of Mystic Falls covered in blood. Raik had barely just got over that experience, still making his stomach turn when he thinks about it. The blonde reaper back in LA told Remzi he could make anyone believe whatever came out of his mouth, but it failed to work on the arresting officer for some reason. He glued himself to the corner, where he had a wide view of the club. His body was ridgy and tense, tenser than usual. He took a deep breath in an attempt to relax, reminding himself everything would be okay. His quest to find Remzi was soon interrupted by the smaller blonde, requesting a dance, which he politely refused. Nothing against the girl; he just wasn't looking to end the night in the bed of another. He was too stressed out about his brother, which wasn't new. The petite wasn't taking no as an answer, though, trying to pull him towards the dancefloor. He wasn't drunk enough for this, but another blonde appeared alongside him. A little taller and more attractive too, at first glance, and this was one pushing drink into his hands. "You looked like you could do with that."Raik smiled at the female and shrugged his shoulders. No matter how hard Joy pulled, she would have struggled to get him moving. "Thank you" He gestured towards his drink and took a sip, the alcohol burning his throat slightly as it travelled down towards his stomach. The blonde hanging around his neck was certainly more forthcoming than Joy, who stood in the background looking on at the pair. Nonetheless, Raik lifted his free arm and gingerly placed it on the female to steady her as she rose to her tiptoes, throwing a comment towards the other blonde. Brown eyes glided past a vacant looking Joy, still searching for Remzi, but there were so many people out, and with the strobe lights, it was making it near impossible. With a quiet sigh, he turned his attention back to the stranger. "I'm not here on my own by the way" He spoke loudly as he looked down at her, as though he needed to explain why he was stood in the corner of the club alone, like some creep "I'm with my brother, but he's... he's disappeared into the crowd" Hopefully, Remzi would come home at a reasonable hour otherwise, Raik would be sat up in bed all night waiting for their motel door to swing open. "My name's Raik" He said the female, leaning in a little closer to her as he spoke, ensuring she could hear him over the music. PHOEBE MURPHY

Now, she’d never have called herself entirely self-centred, but Phoebe had never found that the title of ‘rescuer’ had fit her too well. She had saved lives, starting with her own when teenaged misadventure had left her floundering in water cold enough to freeze the air in her lungs, rapidly working her way up to making sure the vampires hadn’t drained Dotty out in the woods. It was circumstances, not some noble sense of duty that would’ve left her the Mother Teresa of Elk Valley. Altruistic to an extend but uncomfortable enough with the mantle of it to typically have her shying away, shrugging at the metaphorical tent of a brown polyester shirt that had been the first symbol of her former office she’d slipped in. Scowling in the mirror, reluctant to even pick up the little gold star that would top it off. It wasn’t her. Not that any of them had cared. They’d nudged her into it anyway and maybe she’d grown used to the awkward fit of it.
Used to it enough that there hadn’t been a moment’s hesitation in rescuing the giant from the drunken little shrew. Joy wasn’t bad in class but get her out, get a couple of vodkas in her and she believed she was anybody’s, pushing the idea until, like now, they were obviously prepared to peel her away, one finger at a time if necessary. This, of course, was when that instinct struck, without a roll of her eyes or that sense of expectation to have to do it.
Phoebe slipped the slip into his hand out of the goodness of her heart. Her eyes rolled up, well up, to meet his, lips curving as he smiled at her. Tall, dark, and incredibly polite. The sort to be eaten alive by women like Joy. He hadn’t batted an eyelid at her sweetheart though, perhaps glad enough for the help in detaching the limpet that he wasn’t about to cough and splutter and deny knowing her. Better the devil who wasn’t drunk enough to be yakking all over his boots at the end of the night. Chivalry had a tendency to get messy at times when it came to the drunk and disorderly. ”Anytime,” she promised sweetly, curling in towards him as an arm seemed to come up with some reluctance in response to her encouragement. A meaty prop to steady her as she rose on her toes and shot Joy a look over her shoulder. She wasn’t drunk enough for her balance to leave her swaying like a tree about to be felled but he didn’t need to know that.
Eyes a couple of shades lighter than his studied his face as she looked back and saw his gaze sliding off the retreating limpet and into the crowd. Still looking for someone … shame. Phoebe made a light sound in her throat, curling the arm around his neck a little tighter as she sipped from her own glass. A faint warmth from the alcohol in it but no longer that illicit little buzz she’d always gotten when she’d snuck into her parents liquor cabinet, too young and naïve to realise that those little acts of rebellion were going to pale in comparison to everything else. ”Girlfriend?” she queried, her question almost lost under the loud rumble of his voice as he continued to explain. Brothers, why did it always have to be brothers.
Head dipping slightly, she laughed. Phoebe tilted her head back in the direction of the bar. ”I suppose I could say the same, although mine’s on shift. I suppose having one serving you drinks all night isn’t half as worrying about losing one in all of that. I could have Lawrence keep an eye out for him if you want?” Or at least make sure that a back-up rescue was available if Joy tracked him down. If he looked anything like this one she’d be on him the moment she focused enough to get a look.
As he eased in, his voice close enough to her ear for her to catch the unusual name, Phoebe splayed her hand between his shoulder blades, an anchor for her far smaller form as she tipped her head up to introduce herself, her name not carrying half as well as her own. ”Phoebe,” she called out, grinning a little as her lips skimmed the beard that darkened his jaw. ”Do you always watch over your brother, Raik? Or…” Her voice drifted to a croon as the music abated for a moment, seeming to put a brief pall over the chaos on the dance floor. ”… can he be trusted to take care of himself usually?” She understood that urge to protect where family came in at least. For too long she’d believed Lawrence was dead and had then spent decades yearning to be hold onto him again. The only family she had left … and she’d walloped him for it when she’d found him here too. Affectionately of course.

The brother’s had many years ahead of them. How long could Raik spend running around after his younger brother? One who was never going to age. There would be a day he was no longer around to look after his sibling. One day Remzi would be left alone in the world. No parents, no brother. It made Raik’s heart ache, as though he physically felt the piece of muscle in his chest hurt. Realistically he couldn’t be doing this until he was 80 though. He had a life he was eager to press on with. Children, a career, marriage. He couldn’t exactly do that if he had a sibling who was out there tearing people apart. He had to bury his concerns deep though, telling himself he was just overthinking the situation. Remzi would be fine, Raik would be fine. They would all be fine. Perhaps if there were a few more drinks burning in the pit of his stomach Raik would have followed Joy to the dancefloor, leading her out the club as the lights flickered on at closing time, but her presence had been replaced by another. One who insisted she was saving him from Joy, not that he needed saving but happy to play the damsel. Especially if it ended with a free drink in his hand. Poor Joy. She didn’t look too impressed as she watched her friend and Raik communicate. Like a child who’d toys had been snatched from their hands by another. There were plenty of other men out there she could drag to the dancefloor for a bit of provocative dancing. Raik however was not that man, at least not tonight. Eyes drifted down as she mentioned girlfriend. If he did have a girlfriend wandering around the club she wouldn’t be happy to find Raik’s hands on another. Sadly not looking for a girlfriend, rather his reckless brother. His gaze glided over to the bar as she mentioned her brother was working, though there were so many members of staff flittering behind the bar he wasn’t sure who she was referring to. Raik turned his attention back to the blonde, shaking his head lightly, “It’s okay. He’ll turn up… somewhere, somehow... thank you anyway” With his response came a weak smile. The cell in the local police station perhaps? Or captured by someone? His stomach did somersaults yet again. He didn’t want to put people out by asking them to look for his brother like he was a lost kid in the mall who’d drifted from his parents' sight. Remzi wouldn’t be impressed if Raik told staff to keep an eye out for him either. Despite his concerns he relaxed a little, taking another sip of his drink as the blonde introduced herself, feeling her lips tickling the tip of his beard hair as her hand rested in the middle of the top of his back. “Nice to meet you Phoebe” Almost mirroring the female’s action, he rested his hand lightly on her lower back. A grin crept across his face at Phoebe’s question. Could Remzi be trusted to take care of himself? Absolutely not, but Remzi would argue that point until he was blue in the face. “He’s my younger brother so I feel like I have to look out for him” Eyes scanning the dance floor again, but only for a second this time before he looked back down at Phoebe, “But to answer your question no he cannot take care of himself. He is… a bit of a party animal and likes to drink” To put it lightly. He’s always been considered the wild sibling, which wasn’t hard compared to Raik, the man who stressed if he was going 1mph over the speed limit. Slowly he was breaking away from that military lifestyle that had been ingrained into him for so long, but it was taking it’s time as though Raik was having to change his very DNA. He was still a firm believer that life needed some structure, rather than the chaotic life his sibling chose to lead. One without goals or direction. “Maybe I should get a job here like your brother so I can keep an eye on mine” He quipped, though working in a nightclub was his idea of hell. Serving drunk youths whilst listening to deafening music on repeat for hours. He only enjoyed the environment when piled with alcohol. With that he took a large mouthful of his drink. If he wasn’t going to find Remzi that evening the least he could was drink away his concerns away with the attractive blonde. PHOEBE MURPHY

Most lived with their heads buried in the sand, avoiding a painful truth she’d lived out when she wasn’t even out of her teens. Those closest to you died. It didn’t matter if it was your ninety year old grandmother who was sour enough that it felt like Death himself couldn’t bear to come and get her or your nineteen year old brother who hadn’t even been able to break out from under your parents’ expectations, they could be cut down at any time. Hushed funerals with only a handful of mourners, grand parades through cities gathering up those who didn’t even know you but wanted to join in the celebration of your life anyway, or, Phoebe had found herself thinking a hundred mournful times, worse, no notice taken of your passing at all. A shallow grave in woodland, people left behind with no clue of where you were.
So many didn’t see it coming and so wasted their time. They didn’t cherish every one of those moments they had. Choosing to lose them to bitterness or regret instead until suddenly it was all gone. She could’ve soured the mood now she supposed, her eyes narrowing as she studied that darkly handsome face. There’d been no response to her query but human ears were as deaf as their eyes were blind and she wasn’t about to lose her damsel in distress to some real distress when her maudlin words about brothers not turning up sent him careening into the crowd. Phoebe’s lips curled once more, the start of a Cheshire Cat grin. ”Perhaps with of a walk of very little shame in the morning?” she suggested with the quick of a brow. Or worse. His nerves gave him away there, that rapid flutter of his system that she understood all too well.
Three quarters of a century after she thought she’d lost Lawrence and that first reunion had bought her own worries flooding back. She’d lost her brother once, who was to say it wouldn’t happen again – but she wasn’t going to wring her hands over it and lose that time with him. A brother for a brother, she would make sure that Lawrence did look out for Raik’s brother. A watchful eye in a place that needed it.
Up on her toes, Phoebe had introduced herself, tilting her head as she felt his hand finally rest against her back. Oh and look, that was a smile despite the concern. ”You too,” she murmured, easing that bit closer to absentmindedly skim her lips just above that scruffy line of beard as he smiled. ”It’s not just the younger ones you have to watch out for.” Phoebe hummed lightly, half pirouetting on her toes to look back for Lawrence as she took a sip. No sign but she tossed her hair back from her face. ”It seems as though your brother and mine have a little something in common. Lawrence was never what you’d call a party animal but … he’s magnet for trouble and it’s a sister’s prerogative to drag him out of it. A big brother’s too, I suppose?” God, she wasn’t going to tell Lawrence that. He’d always given her the space to stretch her wings but things were very different now to how they’d been before the vampires had found their coven.
Licking a trace of liquor from her upper lip, Phoebe craned back against him. The hand curled around her glass pressed against his left shoulder, another point to steady her as she brought her face close to his and laughed. ”Are you a sucker for punishment or is it all work and no play makes Raik a protective boy? You need some space too, even if being a big brother sound like a full time job. Perhaps you should cut him free for the night?” A dangerous prospect in a place like this perhaps but the odds were better than some spots in the town. At least if he was in here his brother wasn’t out in the woods or walking the streets in the dark, a target on what she imagined was an equally brawny back, just daring someone to take a nibble.

Having Remzi crawl home the following morning was not uncommon in his human days, but now the daylight was his enemy, with no way of getting from A to B without burning to a crisp. When they arrived at the motel room Raik made it crystal clear that Remzi wasn’t allowed to bring home any women at the end of the evening. The brothers were close, but not that close. Their beds were only a few inches apart and he wasn’t about to be kicked out of his own bed so his brother could have some fun between the sheets. His brother had been granted the ability to live forever with limited ways to be killed, yet Raik found himself stressing more than before. Now he was doomed to be forever burned by making sure his brother didn’t stray too far from the straight and narrow. Raik’s favourite path in life. “He prefers to call it a stride of pride” He said with a chuckle. Even for Raik it was rarely a walk of shame, rather a hazy stroll as he longed to climb back in bed. Unlikely his brother though he tended to leave his phone number on the bedside table the following morning, considering himself quite the gentleman. Sometimes he was thankful his phone didn’t buzz over the next few days as there was no way he could take a one off hook up home to meet his mom. Raik had spent years trying to drag his brother out of trouble, failing almost every single time. The first blow was his overdose, furious at himself for not being there. The second was falling asleep whilst his brother snuck out to party and subsequently died. “My brother would party 24/7 if he could” Perhaps as soon as he got his daylight he would. Remzi was always the one to be invited to the cool parties whilst Raik trailed behind with an invite by default. Always known as ‘Remzi’s brother’, people not bothering to remember his name. He wasn’t the life of the party, rather the one who stands in the corner feeling out of place. That awkwardness had washed away over the years though as he grew into the person he was today. All work and no play had been a true definition of his life until he prized himself away from his hometown. His career in the military had come to an end and he found himself looking for his next job instead of taking a moment to enjoy the free time he’d been granted. The idea of not having a job was daunting but Remzi stepped in quick enough to propose a road trip. Something to keep Raik busy and help to heal the mental scars left behind by his time on the field. It would have been easy to spiral into the darkness with the free time he had. His mind overthinking everything that happened. Picking everything apart, telling himself he could have done more to help people. His mind was bordering on becoming his enemy in the weeks that followed his discharge. Remzi had already cut Raik free for the night the moment he left the motel room, “I won’t find him. He’ll see me before I see him and avoid me at all costs” He admitted with a shrug, as he glanced down at Phoebe with a smile, “I should just enjoy my evening and have a few drinks” If anything alcohol would help him to relax. He brought his glass up for a large mouthful ofhis drink, “Perhaps we could both cut our brothers free and enjoy the evening together?” Phoebe was right, he did deserve to unwind a little. Men and women could’ve become a blur of faces since she’d arrived in Mystic Falls. College campuses were a thousand times worse than the village in that way. Even in dorms it was an ever revolving door of bed hopping. The RAs made some attempt at upholding the rules but an entire college of teenagers – and some that had been in that teenaged state for a century or five – made fighting hormones a useless prospect. They were going to party when they wanted to, sowing their wild oats thick. Now, she’d indulged occasionally, without an ounce of shame, but Phoebe had found herself with other priorities – the biggest of which was handling things behind the bar tonight. Decades of being a one woman, or man, woman had ingrained itself. The minute there were any ties she drew the line. It was what was fair after all.
There were no ties tonight. No warm body – or otherwise – waiting for her back in her room. Watching the clock tick by until she slipped in, heels dangling from her hand. It had left her free to rescue one who it seemed would’ve been waiting for his own brother. The concern of a sibling keeping him up, eyes on the door until the slap of it signalled the home coming. And that strut. Phoebe snorted at the image of it, already fitting together an impression of this guy’s brother from his description. ”I’m with your brother there,” she promised, a bob of her head wrapping her own behaviour in the description. Phoebe’s gaze sharpened, giving the bearded man a quick study. ”How about you? Pride or an embarrassed crawl in after being out half the night.” Hopefully not in the octopus like arms of his near miss here.
It sounded like Raik needed to sprout some of those arms himself. Practice or not, dragging people out of trouble, especially the self-induced kind, was never easy. Phoebe studied the bar for a moment, where her brother would’ve been finding his own again, but she couldn’t see that lanky figure working alongside the bulkier form of his Viking-a-like coworker. She hummed lightly, lips pursing with amusement as she looked back, up at the equally bearded form of her rescuee. ”And you’d watch his back the entire time,” she said, her tone kind rather than condemning. ”I think…” Her hazel eyes narrowed, that considering noise buzzing in her throat again, ”…my brother would say the same about me, but this is most an excuse.” To get to spend time with Lawrence. Decades apart had left her hungry for that time together. If there was one thing she’d been taught by all of this it was not to look the gift horse of the family you loved in the mouth.
He could’ve been just another pretty face in the crowd. Aloof or shy, trying to pry himself free of grabby hands, or, what would’ve been worse in a way, a pretty face who thought itself above everybody else. No girl, or guy, stunning or compelling enough to grab his intention. There was a heart beneath that solid chest though, one Phoebe could hear over the music with no strain at all. A good one from the impression he was giving … that was far rarer than pretty eyes or a handsome face.
And if his ward was gone?
Phoebe smiled sharply, her chin dropping an inch in an expression that should’ve been a warning. If his ward was gone and all he was doing was killing time here til he could follow his brother out, if he saw him, then Raik here was at a loose end. ”Uh huh,” she drawled lightly. Her chin lifted again and that hand with the glass in rose, gesturing lightly back towards the dance floor. ”Perhaps we should. Find our own trouble while they’re finding theirs, hmm?”
The drink was brought back to her lips, her gulp as large as his before she draped her arm around his neck and started to shift her weight back. An anchor leading in the direction of the dance floor. ”Tell me, Raik, do you dance as well as you drink? We should work up a thirst, burn some of that responsibility right out of us.” And perhaps sell that story she’d started to write the minute she’d come to his rescue. That glass pressed to the back of his neck, Phoebe drew his head down, meeting his dark eyes before she gave that flash of a wicked smile as pressed her lips to his to chase that taste of alcohol and irresponsibility.

Despite being the older brother Raik always found himself trailing behind on some milestones. Mainly the ones involving women. First, kiss at 16 in the park near his house. Two years later he lost his virginity to the same girl. He was supposed to be saving himself for the one, but at that moment he believed his current girlfriend was the one. Once they broke up casual sex became more of a regular thing for him. Maybe not as regular as Remzi, but enough. He laughed at Phoebe's question, his gaze falling down to the blonde. “Oh it’s always a crawl home. Telling myself I’ll never drink again, but usually a crawl of pride. Doesn’t have the same ring to it though” The awkwardness of walking home at 9am after a night of fun had washed away from him once he reached his 20s and now being in his 30s he was comfortable in his own skin. The only issue was their mom threatening to find a wife for Raik and Remzi if they didn’t start looking soon. How the hell were they supposed to find a woman to marry Remzi though? A freshly turned vampire with a drinking problem and not the normal type. Through the years Raik had been his brother's wingman, even going along with the white lies his sibling was feeding to the women, but this was a whole new challenge. True. Raik would be watching his brother the whole time. He glanced back up at the crowd, as Phoebe's eyes wandered too. “We’ve always had each other’s backs” From toddlers to now. When the other kids were cruel to Raik in the playground his brother would storm ahead, swinging punches at anyone and everyone who dared to say anything about Raik. Now he had Remzi’s back. Travelling across America to find him a daylight ring and keeping his death a secret from their parents. He even lied to the police for his brother, even when there was a risk of them both getting arrested for a felony and it was the only person in the world Raik was willing to do that for. “Are you the one the other sibling needs to keep an eye out for?” Was she Remzi and her brother was Raik? Finding trouble wasn’t his favourite thing to do, but it was either that or waiting anxiously back at the hotel room. There were no screams coming from the dance floor so clearly, Remzi hadn’t sunk his teeth into anyone. Yet. He nodded in agreement, glancing back down at Phoebe, his dark eyes finding hers. “Sounds like a plan” Exactly how much trouble could the petite blonde drag him into? His eyes drifted towards the dance floor for a moment, before returning to Phoebe. Now Phoebe was the one dragging him to the dance floor though less forceful and not slurring her words, but this time he was willing to participate instead of pulling back like the one who tried back “Let’s go and find out” As she draped her hand around his neck he edged down towards her, sliding his hands along her lower back. A smile before she drew him closer, pressing his lips against her. The kiss was soft and gentle, lingering for just a moment longer than needed, but it left him wanting more. There was a glint of something mischievous beyond those hazel eyes. Interlocking his fingers into hers, he was the one now tugging her towards the dancefloor, pulling her in close as soon as he reached the outskirts of the bodies. Phoebe was a distraction from Remzi, for now. Each time the pair headed back to the bar he noticed Phoebe's brother was heavily discounting any drinks purchased by her, leaving Raik to pay full price whilst watching him with a careful eye. Making sure Raik was looking after his sibling, while his own was still lost in the crowd. Soon the alcohol helped the worry slip away, leaving him with a warm feeling in the pit of his stomach as he danced with Phoebe under the strobe lights. A hand slipped around the back of her neck, pulling her in for another kiss, this time with more hunger and passion. “I’m impressed at how well you can hold your drink” He spoke in a low voice into her ear. The two had gone drink for drink and Raik was feeling the effects now. Being almost a foot smaller than her, he expected to be carrying her by now. PHOEBE MURPHY

Phoebe made a low sound in her throat, patting Raik’s chest fondly at his laughed admission. He might have done the occasional crawl home but this was certainly the good brother. Nursing a drink in the corner just to make sure the wild one was safe. It was saintly in a way she’d never exactly been – and Lawrence hadn’t been for her. He’d been the good one out of the two of them, her the one getting in trouble by trying to spread her wings beyond the valley. If it hadn’t been for the vampires and their little thirst for vengeance Lawrence would’ve continued to be the golden boy, eventually ending up head of the coven while his little sister continued to be the wild one – the crazy aunt, the flighty witch whose powers were always going to be a little more fiery than most.
She glanced down at the hand that looked so small on the very large, solid curve of Raik’s chest, frowning faintly as her fingers curved. No magic left. That was the worst part of being turned. The shunning she could’ve taken but all of that magic had gone, leaving only the heat of her thirst behind and that would never be quenched. Luckily for Raik here she’d gained control of it decades ago. She wouldn’t drain him, leaving him in some ditch somewhere like others did in this town. He’d still crawl home, proudly, hopefully. A reward for being that good brother.
Seeking her own out, Phoebe sighed lightly. Lawrence still seemed at risk of someone chewing him up and spitting him out but now she had him watching his back again. A little sister willing to fight for what she had back. Rising slightly higher on her toes, Phoebe met his eye for a moment before she let her lips ghost close to his ear. ”You’re a good brother, Raik, probably better than he deserves.” She’d been serious but her lips were already curving as she drew back far enough to meet his eye, something faintly wicked in her smile. ”What makes you think I’d be anything like that?” she asked, grinning at him with just a glint of her never lost mischievous side glinting in her whiskey eyes. A slow bob of her head was probably all the confirmation he needed. Not a hundred percent the truth but definitely close enough.
Raik was willing to play along too it seemed. That nod was all the confirmation she needed. He hadn’t struggled the way he had when Joy had tried to get her claws into him. There was an agreement there, his head dropping towards her, his hands, probably big enough to span her entire waist, sliding down to her back. She had to kiss him of course, nothing deep enough to scare him off, but enough to lure him with her. Phoebe hummed with satisfaction as Raik’s fingers snaked together with hers. He had a little of the wild in him after all.
Singing along lightly with the music Phoebe went along with him, wrapping around him again on the edge of the press of bodies. Theirs moved along with that music now, something primal in the dance and the beat that only broke for those trips back to the bar. Innocence filled her expression every time she headed to the bar, fingers patting Lawrence’s cheek fondly as he gave her the family rate on the drinks. He still gave Raik that ‘I’m her elder brother, I could kill you’ look every time he went up but it was all bark and no bite. He didn’t step in to stop what was happening on the dance floor at least.
Her dance partner was slowly softening under the effect of the drinks, no longer constantly looking for his brother in that heaving crowd. His hand slid warm to the back of her neck, drawing her in. Phoebe kissed him back, revelling in the heat that poured into it. Flattening herself to him, a low sound of need in the base of her throat as he dragged his mouth to her ear. Her fingers flexed on solid muscle, a shiver running through her. ”It’s a gift,” she lied glibly. The hum trilled in her throat, probably unheard but she was inching up, closing her teeth lightly over his earlobe. ”How about we take a stride of pride back to your place and I’ll show you just how much control I still have?” A tighter squeeze of fingers, heat and promise in those whiskey eyes as she drew back to look at him. One last kiss, one that would’ve left her breathless if she still needed air, and she was pulling him out of there.
Remzi was going to have to watch out for himself tonight.
