The trip to Mystic Falls had been a long one. Diego and his parents had been living across the country and it had surprised him when his brother had revealed where he was heading but during the cab ride through town Diego couldn’t see that he was already starting to see the appeal of the place. This wasn’t how he had planned on turning up at his brother’s place, for such a long time he had kept his mouth shut and let his parents do whatever it was that they were going to do safe in the knowledge that they would do the right thing eventually but as the two of them had argued about whether or not they should attend their own son’s wedding just because Antonio was marrying a guy he had known that he couldn’t stay quiet any longer. Diego’s last relationship had ended up being a complete train wreck but it had taught him a few things about himself and he had accepted himself for who he was. He knew now that he liked guys and he wasn’t afraid to admit that any longer. Coming out to his parents the way he did wasn’t how he had thought that it would happen but he hoped that it would be the wakeup call that the two of them needed to make them realise that love was love no matter who it was with. The day before Diego had packed his things and headed to Virginia and he hadn’t stopped since then. He knew that he probably should have called ahead to make sure that Antonio was actually going to be at home when he got there but if there wasn’t anyone there then he knew that he would find a way to amuse himself for a while and try again later. He still had his brother’s address saved from when Antonio had told him that he was moving to Mystic Falls and as the cab pulled up outside the house Diego paid the driver before taking his bags and heading up the path. He knew that he could have easily just packed for the duration of his stay for the wedding but the truth was that Diego wanted to get away from the memories of what had happened with his ex. He didn’t want to relive that so starting over seemed like a pretty good idea as far as he was concerned and Antonio had suggested he move to Mystic Falls a few times so Diego knew that now was the right time to do it. He already had a few leads on some apartments that he was going to take a look at over the next few days but right now he wanted nothing more than to see his family and it was with that in mind that he knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer. Ethan sometimes couldn't believe just how lucky he was. He had a home filled with people he loved and they loved him back. For Ethan, it was exactly what he'd needed for so long. It was exactly what he'd longed for. So now that he had that, he was doing everything in his might every passing day to make sure they don't slip from between his fingers because life could back-stab you in a second with absolutely zero remorse. So he didn't want to take any of this for granted. Remembering the fact that he was engaged now and actually prepping for his wedding always made his stomach feel funny. In all the best ways possible, of course. It just made him incredibly happy to know that he was going to get married to the love of his life. Life simply couldn't get any better than that.
But life surely had a funny smell, didn't it? It smelled faintly of something burning... Ethan blinked out of his thoughts and looked down at the pan currently resting on the eye of the stove and cursed under his breath when he took too long to flip the pancake over. He quickly flipped it over but it was already too late because the bottom of it was black and it honestly looked far from appetizing. Ethan fanned the smoke that emitted from the pan with a grimace on his face. He put the pancake in the trash above the other pancakes he'd burnt or completely screwed up by flipping them before the bottom of it was cooked.
Ethan looked up from the mess he created when he heard a knock on the door. He reached to shut off the stove and made his way to the door. "Did you forget your key again, Ela? I swear I'm going to glue it to your backpack next time." Ethan spoke up before he opened the door and when he did, his eyes settled on someone who wasn't Ela at all. "Oh. You..." He looked very familiar to Ethan and it took him a moment to realize where he had seen him before. The pictures in the house. They were of Antonio and someone else. Someone who looked like him. Diego. His brother. He'd asked who that person was and Toni was more than happy to fill him in. "Oh! Hey. Sorry, uh.. Took me a moment. You're Diego, right? Toni's brother. I'm Ethan, by the way. I dunno if you already know about me but I promise I'm not a thief who is kind enough to open doors." There was already a smile beginning to form on his lips as he looked at the other. "Come in, come in." He took a step to the side and held the door open for the other to come into the house.

Even though Antonio had already been living his own life by the time Diego was born the truth was that Diego had never felt like he was alone. His brother had visited when he could, they had talked often and Diego had gone to stay with him a few times over the years as well. He would be lying if he said that he hadn't thought about moving to Mystic Falls sooner, his brother had mentioned it a while ago but back then Diego was settled. He'd had his own life and he hadn't wanted to give that up. Now was a completely different story though. He still had friends back home but after what happened with his ex he'd had to leave town anyway and with the way his parents were being Diego knew that a wake up call was exactly what they needed. None of it had happened the way he had planned but the truth was that he didn't regret it. He had been hiding who he was for such a long time and living his life in secret from his parents but now he didn't have to do that any longer. He was free to be himself and he knew that he didn't want to go back to the way things used to be again. He had tried to start over in a new town after he'd left his home and his ex behind and his parents had done the same but it hadn't been as easy to start over after that as Diego had hoped it would be. He was still nursing a broken heart and he knew that right now he wanted to be around his family so heading to Mystic Falls already safe in the knowledge that he wanted to stay there after the wedding had seemed like the right thing to do. Diego knew that he probably should have called first even if it was just to make sure that someone would be home when he got there but he wanted to surprise them all so he had decided against it. He felt a little guilty about asking if they would mind having an uninvited house guest for a little while just while he sorted out an apartment but he hoped that they wouldn't mind too much. Diego wasn't sure who would end up opening to door but as it swung open it wasn't his brother or one of his nieces standing before him, it was someone he had only seen in photos. Antonio hadn't told him about Ethan before the guy came back into his life but Diego had known that there had been something eating away at his brother, something that was too painful for him to talk about. He had tried to get him to open up a few times but in the end it had become clear to Diego that it wasn't going to work so he had just made it clear to Antonio that he would be there for him when he was ready to talk. It was only after Ethan came back and they got together that Antonio had come clean about their history and it had all suddenly made sense. "That's right, I'm the younger, better looking brother," he joked, a playful smile forming on his face as he grabbed his bags and stepped into the house. "Don't worry, I know who you are. Ant talks about you all the time," he added, not wanting Ethan to worry. "You're much better looking in person, I can see why my brother turned for you," he said, his smile turning mischievous as he heard footsteps approaching and saw his brother's cheeks flush red at what he'd just said. Soon enough Antonio was there with them and Diego drew his brother in for a hug. "I'm sorry to show up unannounced but I had to get away and I figured a fresh start like you've been suggesting would do me good. I've got a few apartments lined up to look at over the next few days but is there any chance I could crash on your couch for a few days?" he asked them both as he released his brother, hoping that they wouldn't mind. He knew that it was the home that Antonio and Ethan shared with their kids and he knew that he didn't want to impose for too long but the hotels and motel in the area were full for the time being so he didn't really have any other options if he wanted to stay in town. Ethan had always wondered about what Diego was like. He had only seen him in pictures but he knew that it gave nothing away about what kind of person he was, so he always found himself feeling curious about Diego and now that they had finally met, he realized he was nothing like what he'd painted him to be and it surprised him in a good way, of course. He looked like a really fun person to be around and Ethan was curious to know more about him because he genuinely looked like a good person. Just like his brother. A chuckle fell from Ethan's lips at the other's cheeky joke about being better looking than his brother. Yup. A fun person to be around. He was right about that.
Ethan's expression softened when he heard that Antonio talks about him all the time whenever he's talking to his brother. It made his heart skip a beat in the best way possible. He always talked about Toni, too, actually. But since he doesn't have any siblings (any that he's aware of, at least) he usually does it to his friends instead and while they always huff and puff about it, it never stops him from talking about Toni again and again. It was his first time being madly in love with someone, okay? Give him a break. He just wants to talk about his fiance all the time, it didn't matter whether the other person on the other end wanted to hear it or not. Ethan's eyes widened slightly at Diego's compliment and his fiance chose that moment to enter. His attention drifted to his lover, noticing the way he was blushing which made a grin form on his lips. "You Alvarez's and your charm, I swear." He said with an embarrassed chuckle following. "Here I thought it was my impeccable cooking skills and my stellar personality that made you fall for me." Ethan teased his fiance with a chuckle following, though there was no denying that he was blushing a bit. Though he seemed to become distracted with the other's request to stay here. It didn't make him feel annoyed or anything like that. If anything, he was really glad because it meant that they'll talk more often and get to know each other better. "Of course. I don't mind. Our house is your house, for as long as you want. You're family, too." Ethan's lips stretched to form a soft smile and he had a feeling that his fiance would agree too.

Showing up without any warning probably wasn't the best idea in the world but Diego knew his brother well enough to know that Antonio wouldn't turn him away. He had tried to sort out a place to stay before he got there but everything was booked and he hadn't wanted to delay his trip. After things ended badly with his ex he had tried to start over in a new town but he hadn't felt like it was the right fit for him. It was a nice enough place but it just wasn't for him and he had figured that out pretty quickly. Mystic Falls felt different though, Antonio and the girls had built a life for themselves there and Ethan and Elias had come into their lives while they were there as well. Diego still had yet to meet his nephew but from what he could see Ethan seemed like a nice guy and he made Antonio happy in a way that no one else ever had so as far as Diego was concerned, that was good enough for him. There were times when he felt a little jealous about what Antonio had but there wasn't any resentment there whatsoever. He knew how hard his brother had worked and the truth was that Diego was beyond happy for him. His brother had Ethan and the kids now and Diego knew that Antonio hadn't thought that he would end up with any of that so as far as Diego was concerned it meant that there was hope for everyone. The comment about being better looking than Antonio was one that Diego hadn't been able to resist and it seemed to have the desired response from Ethan considering how amused he seemed by it. It had been clear from the moment Antonio told him about Ethan just how much he loved the guy and as Antonio joined them Diego could see from the way Ethan was looking at his brother that he felt the same. "What can I say, it runs in the family," Diego chuckled. He knew that they were different in a lot of ways but when it came to that they were a lot alike. As Diego released his brother from the hug, he felt a smile touch his lips as Antonio moved so he was standing beside Ethan and took his hand before giving it a squeeze. "It was definitely your personality, I fell for you in spite of your cooking skills," Antonio assured Ethan, an amused smile forming on his face as he looked over at his fiancé. Diego couldn't deny that he was relieved when Ethan said that he could stay for as long as he wanted and that he was family too. "I knew I was going to like you," he chuckled before turning his attention to his brother. "Of course you can stay, you know you're welcome here any time," Antonio said which was enough to make Diego's smile return. "Are mom and dad with you?" Antonio asked which was enough to have Diego hesitating. "No, they're not," he said as he rubbed the back of his neck, his earlier confidence waivering slightly. "They're not coming to the wedding, are they?" Antonio asked, seemingly already sure what the issue was. "Listen to me, they'll be here," Diego assured his brother as he reached over and gave Antonio's shoulder a squeeze, knowing that he wasn't going to let their parents worry what should be a special time for his brother and Ethan. "I came out to them and told them that if they don't want to lose all of us in one go then they'll be here. They'll do the right thing," he said, his voice full of certainty. He knew how important family was to them and he was confident that they weren't going to let all of theirs go because of their old fashioned beliefs. "So, how about a tour?" he asked, hoping to lighten the mood a little. ETHAN ALVAREZ

What can I say, it runs in the family. It was definitely your personality, I fell for you in spite of your cooking skills, I knew I was going to like you,
Ethan chuckled at Diego's words before he nodded his head in agreement. "I have no doubt 'bout that now." Especially after having met him. He seemed like a very delightful person and Ethan was more than glad to have met him especially before the wedding so that he could be there for Antonio on their special day because he could just tell how much Toni missed him and how much his family meant for him. Another laugh left the confinement of Ethan's lips at Antonio's words. "Thank you, babe." Ethan said with a half-smile resting on his lips. "Fair warning, don't trust my cooking. Ever." Those words were said to Diego rather than Antonio since his fiance already knew that bit. The scent of something burnt was still lingering in the air from when he had completely ruined those poor pancakes. "But just know that my food is always made with love and that's what counts, right?" Ethan said with a gentle smile resting on his lips as he shrugged his shoulders. His expression softened when Diego told him that he knew he was going to like him, it definitely made him feel good. "It's the least I can do for my brother-in-law."
Ethan's smile faded a little when he realized that their parents weren't coming and he could tell that it affected Toni, especially with their wedding coming closer and closer. Ethan was glad that Diego had reassured him and it also seemed to ease Ethan's nerves a little. "Yeah, babe. They'll be there. I have a feeling they won't want to lose all of us." Ethan assured his fiance with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "Ah, yes! A tour sounds great." Ethan latched onto the idea because he knew it would lighten up the mood quite a bit. He reached for Toni to give his shoulder a gentle and reassuring squeeze. "It's gonna be okay. They'll be there." He reassured him in a gentle voice before he lowered his hand to focus on the task at hand. "So, uh. Let's start." Ethan turned his attention to Diego with a smile still on his lips as he began showing Diego around the house, starting from the living room and going up to the bedrooms upstairs, making sure to show him where everything was so he wouldn't get lost. Their house was not a maze, per say. It was warm and home-y which was what Ethan loved about it. It made him feel happy just being in it. "Aaaand that's 'bout it. What do you think? I hope it's not too confusing. You can also, If you want, stay in my old room? That way you don't have to stay on the couch."

Antonio had talked a lot about Mystic Falls during the time that he had been living there but more than anything he had talked about the girls, Elias and Ethan. Diego knew that his brother had been through a lot and he had wanted nothing more than for him to be happy so he was glad that everything seemed to have fallen into place for him while he was living in Mystic Falls. Even though Diego had never heard about Ethan before he showed up in town he had always known that his brother was keeping something from him and after Ethan moved in, Antonio had finally opened up about what the two of them had been through together. From the way that he had talked Diego had suspected that there was more to it than Antonio was letting on but he had kept that to himself because he had known that he could easily be wrong. It had been clear to him right from the start how happy Antonio was when Ethan was around, though, and now he was getting to see that for himself and he couldn’t help but admire what the two of them had found. It was clear that they were made for each other and Diego was glad that his brother had found a love like that at last. Diego had known that he could have just done what some people do and gone to Mystic Falls for the wedding and left again straight after but he hadn’t wanted to do that. He had wanted to get there early so he could help out if they needed it and now that he had decided to move to the town he wasn’t going to be going anywhere after the wedding either. “I’ll keep that in mind,” Diego chuckled as Ethan told him not to trust his cooking. “That’s definitely what counts,” Antonio said with a grin as he wrapped his arm around Ethan. “Ela and I usually do the cooking around here,” he added which was enough to have Diego nodding. He knew that his brother had learned to cook after the girls were born and Ela had seemed to enjoy it as she’d gotten older too so it definitely made sense. As Ethan said it was the least he could do, Diego’s gaze came to rest on the two of them once again. “Ant clearly has good taste,” Diego said, an easy smile forming on his face once more. “It looks like you’ve done well for yourself,” he added, nothing but approval written all over his face as he watched the two of them together. He couldn’t remember the last time that he had seen his brother look as happy or as at ease as he did right now and Diego was pretty sure that that was all to do with Ethan. As talk turned to their parents Diego could see how worried his brother was and he did his best to reassure him but Diego could see his brother’s eyes widen in surprise as he said that he’d come out to their parents. “You did?” Antonio asked which had Diego nodding. “I’m so proud of you, I know that wouldn’t have been easy.” Diego knew that Antonio knew what it was like all too well, after all he’d told them when he and Ethan had gotten together but even then Diego hadn’t been able to bring himself to say those words out loud. “The two of you inspired me, I could hear how in love you are every time we talked and how happy you are with it all being out in the open. I’ve been hiding a part of who I am away for such a long time and I didn’t want to do that any longer,” he explained. The moment the words had left his mouth it had felt like a weight had been lifted and he didn’t regret it one bit. “You know how important family is to mom and dad, it might take them a while but they’ll come around and I know they’ll be here. They haven’t seen the girls for a while and they haven’t met Elias yet, plus when they see the two of you together they’ll realise you’ve found your soulmate,” Diego said with a reassuring smile, truly happy for his brother and Ethan because he was certain that that was what they were to each other. Those words were enough to bring a genuine smile to Antonio’s face Diego watched as Antonio nodded when Ethan said that it was going to be ok and that their parents would be there. “You’re right, they’ll realise that as long as we’re happy it doesn’t matter who that’s with and if they don’t then it’s their loss,” Antonio said which made Diego’s smile turn much brighter. “I’m glad you’re both here,” Antonio added, kissing Ethan gently and sending an appreciative nod in Diego’s direction. “Ethan, why don’t you show Diego around while I make us something to eat? It was a long trip, you must be starving,” he suggested and Diego nodded. “I am, thanks,” he said sincerely before following Ethan as Antonio headed into the kitchen. Looking around the house as they moved through it, Diego tried to remember where everything was but he had a feeling that it would still take him a little time to remember everything. It wasn’t a complicated set up but it was bigger than Diego was used to. “This place is amazing,” he admitted once he’d seen everything. “I can see why you’re all so happy here,” he added. The kids each had a space to call their own and the house seemed full of love. As Ethan said he could stay in his old room if he wanted to, Diego couldn’t deny that he was surprised. “Are you sure? This is your home, I don’t want to impose.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

I’ll keep that in mind, That’s definitely what counts. Ela and I usually do the cooking around here, Ant clearly has good taste, It looks like you’ve done well for yourself,
Ethan let out a chuckle when Diego told him that he will keep it in mind which earned a nod of approval from Ethan, seeming at ease now that Diego knows that his cooking can't be trusted. It wasn't like he wasn't getting better, he just messes up sometimes and that's perfectly normal, right? Especially for someone who used to be really, really bad at cooking. Like even the most simple recipe always tasted funny whenever he did it. Maybe he was just not good at cooking unlike his fiance and their daughter. "Mhm. Adorable little chefs." Ethan said with a soft chuckle falling from his lips. His attention drifted back to Diego, his words making heat gather in his cheeks as he looked down almost sheepishly with a smile tugging at the corner of his lips which eventually showed teeth. Hearing more about Diego's side of the story was more than enough to have a proud smile forming on his lips as he watched the other who said that seeing the two of them together had inspired him and it was genuinely the sweetest thing he'd heard in a while from someone who wasn't Toni because truth be told, his fiance had a way of always making him blush or laugh without even trying to.
Soulmate.
Such a big word, isn't it? But not to Ethan. He was very certain that Antonio was his soulmate. There was just something about him that made Ethan believe that. Or maybe it was the way he was so madly in love with him and how he could never, ever see himself falling for anyone else. All of him belonged to Toni and just him. He truly made him so happy. "I'm glad you're here too, Toni." He returned the kiss with the same amount of gentleness before he finally leaned away and when Toni suggested showing his little brother around, he nodded his head a few times in agreement. "Yeah, of course." And with that, he started to show Diego around.
"It is. It's home." Ethan said with a gentle smile on his lips when Diego said that their place was amazing. "Everyone I love is in here so this place definitely has a special place in my heart." Ethan looked over at Diego with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "I'm pretty sure you'll be happy here, too." He told him in a soft voice.
"Oh, please. Don't call it that. It's not just my home. It's your home now, too. You're family, remember?" Ethan said with a gentle smile resting on his lips. "Even if you won't stay in here with us for long, you'll still be family." He said in a reassuring voice as he patted Diego's arm gently as he moved to open the door so Diego could fully take a look inside the room that will be his for as long as he decides to stay here with them. "You know, uh... I dunno if this will come off as too much but I'm proud of you. For coming out, I mean. Thankfully, the world is a lot more understanding right now but it's still... not easy to come out, especially to your parents. So what you did was really brave. I lost touch with my parents a long time ago but sometimes my heart does skip a bit whenever I think about telling them about me. Not that I'm ashamed or anything, it's just... a little scary. You mentioned something about us inspiring you, but you know what... You inspired me, too. Maybe if I ever find them again, I'll tell them. About Toni and I. So thank you for that."

Diego had heard a lot about Ethan from Antonio and the truth was that he was proud of his brother. He knew that his brother had struggled when it came to relationships and he had always felt like Antonio was holding something back and now he knew what that was. His brother hadn’t opened up about Ethan and Diego knew now that it was because it had been too painful for him. Diego knew what it was like to end up getting his heart broken but the circumstances of Antonio and Ethan growing closer and Antonio losing him must have been so intense and Diego couldn’t even begin to imagine how difficult that must have been. Ever since the girls were born his brother had stepped up but Antonio had never been truly happy in a relationship with anyone before and Diego would be lying if he said that that hadn’t worried him. He’d wanted his brother to be happy and one look at the two of them together now was enough to tell him that Ethan was the person that his brother was meant to be with. It had taken their parents time to at least start coming to terms with the fact that Antonio was in a relationship with another man but since then they’d adopted a boy and gotten engaged and Diego knew that it was enough to blow his parents’ minds but he was certain that they would see sense soon enough. For now he just wanted to be there for the rest of his family and as Ethan called Antonio and Eli adorable little chefs, Diego couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face. “You two are really cute together,” he said, his eyes fixed on the two guys before him as he spoke. They clearly made each other happy and Diego was proud of them for being honest about it. He knew that it wasn’t just his parents who were born into a less accepting time, Antonio and Ethan were as well but they had changed their way of thinking and it had inspired him to stop hiding who he really was as well. For a moment he wondered if saying that Antonio had found his soulmate might have freaked them both out but the way they were looking at each other was enough to make him realise that they’d already worked that one out. As far as Diego was concerned it was the only thing that made sense given the fact that they’d spent decades apart before finding each other again and they still felt the same away about each other and he knew that he could only hope that he might find his own guy like that sooner or later. Leaving Antonio to make them all something to eat, Diego did his best to take in everything around the home that his brother, Ethan and the kids had built together. He had seen the way that things were when it was just Antonio and the girls and the three of them had been happy together but he could already see so many happy memories of the five of them captured in the photos dotted around the place and he couldn’t help but feel happy for all of them. “I can see how much you love them all,” Diego admitted as Ethan said that everyone he loved was there. “I’ve never seen my brother this happy so thank you for that,” he added. He and Antonio had always been close so he was pretty sure it went without saying that if Ethan ever hurt his brother then he’d have him to deal with but there was something about Ethan that told him that he didn’t have to worry about that. There were more than just two people to think about with their relationship, they had the kids as well and he knew that they wouldn’t have adopted Elias and they wouldn’t be doing all of this if they weren’t both all in. As Ethan spoke again, Diego felt a smile form on his face. “I know but you and Ant are getting married and you’ve got the kids, the last thing you need if your brother-in-law getting under your feet,” he said, knowing that he wasn’t going to want to do anything that would end with him overstaying his welcome. Diego took a half step forward and was about to take a look around the room that was going to be his while he was there but he paused when Ethan started speaking again and he turned to face the man. “That really means a lot to me, thank you,” he said sincerely as Ethan said that he’d inspired him too. “I knew they had a hard time getting their heads around the fact that the two of you are together but it’s different for Ant. You’re the only one he has ever loved and he never would have even thought about bringing anyone else into the girls’ lives or adopting another child with anyone but you so my parents knew it was serious,” he explained. He was pretty sure that that was what had made them realise that they needed to start changing their way of thinking in the first place but learning that Ant and Ethan were getting married was something else entirely. “It’s different for me, I’ve suspected for a while but it took me a while to come to terms with it myself. Hearing them say they were thinking about not coming to support you guys was the last straw,” he continued, still certain that he had done the right thing. “It wasn’t easy but I don’t regret it and I know it will be worth it in the long run. You should definitely tell your parents if you find them again, you two really do belong together and I hope that they’ll see that too.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

I can see how much you love them all, I’ve never seen my brother this happy so thank you for that,
Ethan felt a small smile touch the corner of his lips. The smile itself was genuine because he really did love them all. They meant the entire world to him. "Yeah, I really do love them. I've been so lonely, I guess. Before I met Toni again, I mean. I was so lonely and I really thought I was going to spend the rest of my life like that, but I was wrong. I was so wrong." Ethan breathed out and he was really glad that he was. It wasn't often that he was proven wrong and this time, it really did mean a lot to him. "Of course. It's the least that I can do because your brother makes me really happy, too." And Ethan meant every word of it. Toni really did make him happy and he also made him feel incredibly lucky to have known and loved him like this.
I know but you and Ant are getting married and you’ve got the kids, the last thing you need if your brother-in-law getting under your feet,
"No, no. Don't say that. I think you made Toni really happy just now and I'm sure that none of us will mind one single bit that you're here now." Ethan said with a genuine smile resting on his lips. "Plus, now that you're here, I can bother you with some ideas for the wedding. I didn't know the whole planning thing was so ... intense? Like, oh, what color do you want the chairs to be? Do you want your wedding to be in the garden or inside of your home? Then there's the whole suit-picking process and I'm definitely panicking inside a little bit, but you know what? It's actually pretty fun." Ethan said with a soft chuckle following. Even though the whole planning process wasn't easy and they definitely asked a lot of questions, he didn't seem to mind it one single bit, if he were being completely honest here.
That really means a lot to me, thank you, I knew they had a hard time getting their heads around the fact that the two of you are together but it’s different for Ant. You’re the only one he has ever loved and he never would have even thought about bringing anyone else into the girls’ lives or adopting another child with anyone but you so my parents knew it was serious, It’s different for me, I’ve suspected for a while but it took me a while to come to terms with it myself. Hearing them say they were thinking about not coming to support you guys was the last straw, It wasn’t easy but I don’t regret it and I know it will be worth it in the long run. You should definitely tell your parents if you find them again, you two really do belong together and I hope that they’ll see that too.
Ethan felt his heart skip a beat at Diego's words. It really did make him happy to hear that. Antonio had changed him a lot, too. He had made him a much better person and he couldn't thank him enough for that. It really did make a huge difference to him. He was quiet as he listened to Diego, his eyes focused solely on him before his lips stretched to form a small yet sad smile. "You're right. It will be worth it in the long run. I'm glad you don't regret it. I'm sure they'll come around, especially because they'll be losing you, Toni, the girls and Elias too if they don't support you guys." Ethan said with a gentle smile resting on his lips.
Though he couldn't help the way he felt a bit anxious at the mention of his parents. "Yeah, I do want to. My parents were ..." Ethan paused as he remembered all the times they would scold him or treat him like he wasn't their son which only made his heart sink in the pit of his stomach. "They were good people, just not good parents." Ethan finished his sentence with a sad smile resting on his lips.
"They might not support me for it because essentially the only time they ever supported me was when I joined the war, before that they were just..." Ethan trailed off with a small sigh falling from his lips. Talking about his parents always seemed to put him in a bad mood, so he quickly blinked out of his thoughts and turned his attention to Diego. "Anyway, um... Do you have an idea as to what you're gonna do here in Mystic Falls? Like job wise?" Ethan questioned, wanting to put an end to those depressive thoughts before they consumed him whole.

Diego couldn’t deny that he felt a little guilty about showing up early for the wedding and asking for a place to stay for a couple of days but deep down he had known that his brother wouldn’t turn him away. They had always been close and they’d always looked out for each other but Ant had the girls, Elias and Ethan now and soon enough he was going to be starting the next chapter of his life so Diego knew that he didn’t want to be under any of their feet for longer than he had to be. He knew that the last thing they were probably going to want to do was to start their married life with him staying with them anyway so he had a few apartments lined up to take a look at over the next few days so he’d hoped that it would be just fine and thankfully neither his brother nor Ethan seemed to mind too much. While it was true that Diego hadn’t met Ethan before he already felt like he knew him from what Ant had told him since Ethan had moved in with them so that definitely made things much easier. “Before you came back into his life Ant didn’t talk about the war much and I always wondered what it was that was too painful for him to talk about but now I know it was because he lost you,” Diego admitted. “Neither of you deserved to be on your own so I’m so glad you found each other again.” It seemed like something out of a fairytale in all honesty, Ethan had saved Ela from being attacked, walked her home and come face to face with his brother for the first time in almost a hundred years. Had anyone else told him that then Diego knew that he wouldn’t have believed them but the moment Ant had told him he’d been able to hear in his brother’s voice that every word was true. Diego knew that his brother had tried being in a relationship a few times over the years but it had never stuck and now it was pretty clear why. Ethan’s words were enough to draw a smile to Diego’s face as he looked over at his soon to be brother-in-law. “I’m starting to see why my brother likes you, you’re a good guy,” he admitted. “Thank you, I do appreciate it.” He hadn’t known what Ethan would think about him asking if he could stay there for a few days but he didn’t seem bothered by it at all and Diego couldn’t deny that he was surprised by it but definitely in a good way. As Ethan spoke again, Diego couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ll try but I’m not sure how much help I’ll be. I’m not very good at that stuff,” he chuckled although he knew that he would pitch in however he could, it was the least he could do. “They’ll come around,” Diego nodded, his voice full of certainty as he spoke. “Our parents are traditional but they’ve lost children before in a different way and I know they won’t want to lose all of us now because of a belief that is out dated,” he explained. He knew how worried Ant was that their parents wouldn’t see sense but Diego had spent more time with them lately than his brother had and he knew how much they had hated even being so far away from Ant so he knew that they would make this right. “It’s not just us they’d be losing either, no matter what happens you’re going to be their son-in-law so they’d lose you too.” It was true that his parents hadn’t met Ethan before but Diego had picked up on the fact that there had been someone special in Ant’s past that he’d lost and was still missing all these years later and he knew that his parents had to have seen it too even though they had never actually said anything. As Ethan explained about his parents, Diego’s expression softened. “I’m sorry, that couldn’t have been easy,” he said sincerely. His parents had been strict at times but Diego had never doubted that they loved him and wanted what was best for him. He wasn’t sure that Ethan had had the same experience with his own parents, though, and Diego couldn’t help but feel bad for him for that. “Hopefully they will support you but if not then you’ll have all of us anyway even though I know it won’t be the same,” he offered. He knew what it was like to want to make his parents proud and feel like he fell short of that and he hoped that Ethan wouldn’t let it get to him too much. As Ethan asked what he wanted to do for a job, Diego felt a smile form on his face. “I hope you don’t mind having me around too much because I’m a trained firefighter and paramedic. I have an interview lined up at the local firehouse in a couple of days.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

Before you came back into his life Ant didn’t talk about the war much and I always wondered what it was that was too painful for him to talk about but now I know it was because he lost you, Neither of you deserved to be on your own so I’m so glad you found each other again.
Ethan's eyes relaxed on Antonio as he listened to him talk, his expression shifting into one of sadness as he imagined just how hard it must've been for Antonio back then, to lose him like that. "I can't even begin to imagine how hard it must have been for Toni back then, losing me like that." Ethan trailed off with a frown tugging at his features. "Hopefully, he won't have to go through that pain a second time. I don't plan on leaving him again anytime soon." Ethan said with a small smile tugging at his features, his frown no longer visible on his features. "Thank you, Diego. Me too, me too." He repeated with a happy smile on his lips as his shoulders eased, the tension collected in them disappearing altogether. "It didn't feel real at first, if I'm being honest. When he opened the door after all these years, I thought I was straight up hallucinating, but turns out, I wasn't. It was real. He was right there and it felt like one of those fairytale moments that I always read about." Ethan chuckled because honestly, the last thing he expected was to live a fairytale of his own. He really thought all of those were just fiction and the chances of them happening in real life were pretty slim, but turns out, he was wrong.
Miracles and fairytales do happen, after all.
I’m starting to see why my brother likes you, you’re a good guy, Thank you, I do appreciate it. I’ll try but I’m not sure how much help I’ll be. I’m not very good at that stuff,
Ethan felt a smile touch his lips at Diego's words, appreciating how nice they were. "Aw, thank you. He likes me for number of things. First, my extraordinary skills in the kitchen, of course. Second, my charming self as you can tell. Oh, and third being that I don't obey rules when I should." Ethan said with a rather proud smile resting on his lips. "I might have given our captain a scare every now and then but hey, these moments always end up in a win, so." His words were soon followed by a chuckle to showcase that he was mostly messing around.
"It's okay, we can figure it out, or we'll be absolutely clueless together. Either way works." Ethan's shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug as his lips stretched to form a grin. He was quiet as he listened to Diego, his words making his lips stretch to form a sympathetic smile. He definitely understood what he was saying and he hoped that his parents will come around because he can't imagine how lonely they'll be without all the kids with them. They'd be missing out on so much, honestly. "Thank you, Diego." He said with a gentle smile forming on his lips when Diego told him that they'd be losing him as well because he was a part of their family now.
"It's okay. It's not your fault," Ethan said with a small smile tugging at his lips when the other apologized for his parents' behavior. "You guys are all I need, honestly." It would be better than fighting his parents every single day and asking for their acceptance. He wasn't going to do that. He wasn't going to live a life like that. No way.
He was perfectly content here with his family.
Ethan's brows quirked up at Diego's words. "That's amazing, Diego. I can't wait to work with you if you do get assigned to our team." Ethan said with a soft smile resting on his lips as he patted the other's shoulder. "But even if you join another team, I'd still be pretty happy to see around the station. I'm sure it'd make Toni happy too." Ethan added a moment later, his voice soft.
"You're gonna do great." Ethan added shortly after, meaning every word of it.

Diego hadn’t known what would happen when he’d decided to turn up on his brother’s doorstep unannounced after finally coming out to their parents and telling them that if they didn’t accept their sons for who they were then they were going to end up alone. It wasn’t something that he’d taken lightly but after learning that they were talking about not even attending the wedding it was something that he’d known they’d needed to hear. He had been hiding who he truly was from them for such a long time and he had known that he hadn’t wanted to do that any longer and if it made them see sense so that they would accept that Antonio and Ethan were getting married then that would be even better. He could see how proud his brother was when he told him what had happened and that alone was enough to make Diego’s heart feel that much lighter. He’d always looked up to his older brother and he’d always known that he could count on Ant’s support no matter what was going on and now it was Diego’s turn to return the favour. “I never knew my brother before he lost you but I’ve always known that he was hiding a lot of pain just beneath the surface and that’s gone now,” Diego said gently. On more than a few occasions over the years he’d tried to get his brother to open up to him but Antonio hadn’t been able to do that. Now Diego understood why, he and Ethan had only spent a short time together during the war compared to the amount of time that they’d spent apart since then but Ethan had captured Antonio’s heart and Diego was so glad that the two of them had found each other again. As Ethan said that he didn’t plan on leaving again anytime soon, Diego couldn’t help but laugh. “I don’t think Ant or the girls will let you leave at all,” he chuckled. He had heard about Elias from his brother but didn’t really know him although something told Diego that the boy wouldn’t let Ethan go either. “You’re a part of this family now, you’re stuck with all of us whether you like it or not,” he added with a grin. That family would include their parents when they came around, of that much Diego was certain, and he knew that that was just as it should be. As Ethan mentioned the day they found each other again, Diego found himself nodding. “Ant told me about that, it didn’t feel real to him at first either. He actually thought he was going crazy,” Diego explained, knowing that his brother wouldn’t mind him letting Ethan know that now that things had finally worked out for them. “Thank you for looking after Ela that day,” he added, knowing that he didn’t want to even think about his niece going through something like that on her own. “And here I was thinking my brother would end up with someone who likes to follow the rules,” Diego chuckled. Antonio had always been the one out of the two of them who was better at keeping it together, Diego had made a lot of mistakes in the past but his brother had always been there to have his back. He had drifted around aimlessly for a long time before figuring out what he wanted to do with his life but the truth was that he didn’t regret it because everything that had happened just worked to make him the person that he was now. “I bet your captain loved you for that,” he added with a grin, able to imagine how annoyed they must have been. He wouldn’t have been surprised if Antonio had been worried too but Ethan was a phoenix which meant that he couldn’t be killed very easily, at least not permanently, so he knew that that had to ease his brother’s mind a lot. “You do realise that this could end up being a complete disaster, right?” he chuckled, knowing that it could happen quite easily. He knew that he would help in any way he could though. As Ethan said that they were all he needed, Diego felt a smile form on his face. “It’s the same for Ant with you. Even if our parents don’t come around I know he’ll be fine because he has you and the kids.” Diego knew that their parents had supported his brother when he’d told them that he was dating Ethan but they were traditional so marriage was something different for them entirely. Diego could understand that in a way but he knew that they could also tell just how much Antonio loved Ethan so he hoped that they would come around. “Thanks,” he said, a smile forming on his face as Ethan said that he couldn’t wait to work with him. “Hopefully I’ll be assigned to your team, it will be a lot easier starting over knowing that I’ll be working with the two of you,” he admitted. He had worked with different teams before but he had never had the chance to work with family so he hoped that this time he would get the chance to do just that. ETHAN ALVAREZ
