What did you get for the woman who’d seen you at your worst? To celebrate the birthday of the woman who’d literally held you together with terry cloth, gentle touches and a mouth that could cut and heal all in the same instant. A crock pot, a house dress – chintzy of course, a kidney? The former would likely have earned him one of those looks that could blister a layer of skin off but standing outside one of the stores on the square Theo had found himself eyeing it all the same. None of it seemed like enough. All of it had set his head reeling.
Cramped in to his desk, shreds of sticky tape stuck to his fingers as he regarded the football shaped parcel in front of him. Plum coloured paper folded in a million places, a layer of tape so thick on the outside it left the entire thing shiny. It was a thing of beauty and monster all at the same time. A reflection of the consideration that’d gone into it. Hopefully enough to make Freyja laugh, to have her frowning in that way that made him want to kiss her between the eyebrows, to have her mouth working to make him sting and love her all the more.
He clucked his tongue, glancing at the little brass clock on the corner of his desk. Just enough time to get downstairs before she was meant to meet him for birthday celebrations round two. The day with her family, something he never would’ve encroached on even if he’d felt like he could dump his senior class’s midterm exam on another professor. He’d promised her tonight, had sworn he’d plan the entire thing. Pushing his chair back from his desk, Theo scooped up the parcel and his jacket and winced. Maybe he should’ve left it in Freyja’s hands. Maybe this was gonna come back to bite him on the ass.
Nope.
Tucking the parcel under one arm, then the other, Theo shoved his arms into his jacket. A pat of a hand against the pocket to make sure the envelope with the card was still there, a little squeeze of the parcel to make sure he’d remembered to get everything in. No other hesitation. She wouldn’t have stuck with him this long if she didn’t care for him, if she wasn’t prepared to put up with what Frank commonly referred to as his troll half. That dinner had turned into something so much deeper, something he felt deep in his chest every time he woke up with Freyja sleeping in his arms, her heartbeat against his chest a pulse he could hear even when the rest of the world was silent.
This was right.
He had the parcel tucked in one hand as he pushed out the front door of the science building. A grin tugged at his lips when he saw her waiting by his car in the parking lot like he’d asked in the message he’d sent out before he’d gone into his last class of the day. Enigmatic instructions, nothing really explained until he got to peel each layer of the night away like the sheets of paper wrapped up in his hands. ”Punctual,” he said with a grin. Looking guileless, he lifted the football shaped package, spun it on the end of one index finger before he offered it up to her at the side of his car.
Hooking the other hand in her coat, Theo pulled Freyja in. His grin curled, stayed in place as he kissed her in a proper ‘God I fucking adore you’ greeting. ”Happy birthday,” he murmured against her lips. Theo lifted his head an inch, honest to God fluttering his lashes as he tried for his best choir boy expression. ”You ready to celebrate it Damasca style?” Hazel eyes narrowed, a hint of mischief shining through. Just a hint, no point in giving it away any further than he had to. Layers. That was what the night was about after all. Peel them away, reveal the printed sheets of paper snugged amongst all that plum coloured tissue.

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ Freyja had gone home the evening before her birthday, her brother, Connor, having picked up her and Grim from her apartment and driven them back. She made sure to visit Bo’s grave before the day was done. She’d gone alone, mostly because it was their thing, but her mother refused to linger on the loss of her firstborn so close to another child’s birthday. Freyja didn’t blame her, and she never asked for company anymore━it was an unspoken thing at that point; she went for a visit the night before her birthday and came home before her parents went to bed. She talked to him even though she knew he wasn’t there anymore, and told him about her new job, about Theo, and everything else that was of importance to her. Freyja had cried, and told Bo that she hoped he would be proud of her.
She woke up on her birthday to Jack standing in the doorframe of her old room, incessantly nagging at her to get up. Calling her soft, accusing her of being a ‘city girl’ now, and saying that she wanted to sleep in because she didn’t remember what real work was like. Even though Freyja had pelted him with a pillow, she’d gotten up and joined them for their daily chores, threatening to light Connor on fire again every time he teased her. It was nice to be able to freely talk about and use her abilities, especially since she didn’t have much use for them in her daily life.
They had a late lunch as her ‘birthday dinner’, something her mom had thoroughly planned around Freyja’s schedule. She needed to get back to Mystic Falls to be able to spend the night with Theo━a fact that Connor and Jack never let her forget during her time home. She’d done her best to go back and forth with them, but, eventually, her dad had cut in and reminded Jack that he was still single, whereas Freyja wasn’t ‘going through a dry spell’ like he was━that she’d probably even get birthday sex. Freyja had blushed and her mother shushed him, but it had been effective in shutting up the other two. Well, until she’d received the text from Theo and was unable to stop smiling.
When she’d hugged her mom goodbye, Annalynn had told her to bring Theo home for Christmas. Freyja argued that they weren’t even really calling each other ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’ yet, no matter how much that made her sound like a teenager. ‘You’re falling in love with him, Freyja. I don’t care what you call each other, you’re bringing him for Christmas.’ To which Freyja replied by telling her mom to stay out of her head, and then huffing and eventually agreeing to at least ask him.
By the time Connor had dropped her off at home she had an hour to shower and change before meeting Theo. She’d managed to pull it off in time and avoid a fiasco similar to that of their first date, though she assumed she was only given a bit of luck because it was her birthday. Everything would go back to normal by tomorrow.
Freyja pulled the fabric of her gloves over her fingertips to transition them into mittens, and then adjusted the hat that was sitting on her head, making sure the little yarn pom-pom on the top was at maximum poofiness. She stuck her hands in the pockets of her jacket, pressing her hand against her phone so that she would hear it vibrate in case Theo texted her. But he didn’t━instead, she got to see him walk out of the building. She straightened up immediately and beamed at him, pulling her hands out to take the monstrosity he was offering up. She didn’t have a moment to comment on it, though, because he was pulling her in for a kiss before she could even open her mouth. Freyja slid her other hand underneath his jacket and around his waist to keep him close.
“Thanks,” She smiled, eyes staying closed for a moment as she lingered against his lips. But then he was moving his head back, and she was just as happy to be looking up at his face. Freyja barked out a laugh at his question, glancing towards the dark sky above his head before looking back into his eyes. “If your brother wasn’t gay, that sentence would’ve been a little scary. And exciting, but…” She shrugged like it was no big deal, smirking back at him.
Freyja pulled her arm off of him and brought her hand to her mouth, using her teeth to pull the convertible mitten back to its glove form. Once she was done, she looked down at the purple... thing and laughed, picking at the edge of one of the many pieces of tape with her nail. “I love this, it looks like a five year old wrapped it.” She snorted, tipping her chin back up as she raised herself up on her toes and pecked his lips, giving her thanks in the form of a kiss. “Caaaan I open it now? Or do I have to wait?” She asked, her hand moving from the tape to his shirt and curling her fingers around it. She almost moved to get in the car, but chose to keep him against her instead, beaming up at him like a kid at Christmas. She knew she’d love whatever it was that was wrapped up a million times in that package, because he’d gotten it for her. And Theo was the real present━he always had been.

‘Professor Damasca, is that your girlfriend?’Three weeks ago he’d been walking out of the building when the senior at his side, the one he’d held back after class to discuss the promise in the term paper he’d turned in, had spotted Freyja leaning against his car. He’d been focused on the kid, had thought he was meeting her at the Coffee Bean for an early start to an evening together with the necessary copious amounts of coffee needed to keep him awake after an entire day of invigilating exams, but the moment he’d looked up to see Freyja waiting there the only person he’d had eyes for had been her. Girlfriend, a weighty word but one he’d nodded to, pride shining in the smile he’d aimed at her as the kid had let out a whistle and walked away smirking. That same smile caught at his lips as he walked out to find her there again now, punctual in a way she hadn’t been for their first date. No bright yellow sundress or wet rat hair this time. She was bundled up in mittens and a hat instead, snug as a bug in a rug that was going to be unrolled at some point tonight. To the outside world they probably looked like two idiots beaming at one another but like it always did when Freyja was right there, the rest of the world suddenly vanished into the mist. As Freyja reached out to take the parcel, her reached up, flicked the bottle on top of her hat before he pulled her in for the kiss. ”You’re welcome,” he crooned, leaning in to her as she slid her hand around his waist. He snatched another kiss, lips against the corner of her mouth, before she drew back, laughing up at him as he asked if she was ready to celebrate her birthday Damasca style. A snort rolled out of his nose, the finger he’d used to send the pom-pom bobbling tapping on the tip of her nose as she looked upat the sky. ”Such a pervert,” he said on a mock gasp. ”I’ll have you know our birthdays were always awesome, and the most innocent things on the planet.” For the most part. He wasn’t an angel. If he had been then tonight might’ve been an easier matter. A dinner somewhere nice in town, an after party back on his apartment, instead of the elaborate arrangement he’d set up. ”Well, you know I was teaching all day. I had to pay someone to go and find something for me and wrap it up. I paid him a whole ten bucks for it.” Clucking his tongue, he accepted her peck with a grin. Theo lifted his hand, feeling for the tiny tab of tape he’d left on purpose earlier, the one way into the arc he’d built here. He plucked it up into view. ”One layer now,” he told her. This was a whole night gift, longer if he had his way about it. ”Out here, another when you get in the car. Just … be careful … if you drop the ring down the grate I’m not going in after it. I’m pretty sure something monstrous is living down in the sewers.” And that was one thing he didn’t want to encounter tonight. This was about the opposite, celebrating, showing an incredible woman how much she meant to him. The first layer to peel off would be sure to get him smacked of course, but that was the whole point of that gift. The deeper you got, the closer to the heart.

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ ‘I’ll have you know our birthdays were always awesome, and the most innocent things on the planet.’
“Sounds boring. One time, we went swimming for Connor’s birthday and Jack almost drowned.” Freyja said, raising her brows at Theo. She wasn’t lying━she could vividly remember watching her dad pull Jack out of the lake and scramble over his body until he finally started choking up water. Connor had felt terrible, and got a lecture afterwards. It had made having cake that night incredibly awkward. She’d told Theo about her brothers before, had mentioned them many times over the time the two had been dating━their family had always been close-knit, and Bo had pretty much been her closest friend growing up. She’d told Theo about him, too, though she never dwelled on the reason for his death, not saying much more than it being a car accident.
Part of Freyja, though, wondered if Theo thought they were wild animals with each story she told. But he’d also grown up with a brother, so she hoped he could relate at least a little bit. Maybe, if he came for Christmas, he’d get to meet them and see that they… well, that they were actually wild animals. The worst, but she loved them anyways.
Just like Theo when he started telling jokes that were not funny. Her stomach had clenched up at the ring comment, unsure if it was excitement or terror. It was a different joke than the wedding soup on their first date━that had been light, flirty, and definitely held little weight. They’d been dating for months now, though, and while it still would’ve been incredibly early, it had obviously been a topic of conversation between them more than once before. Freyja knew what she wanted, and she wasn’t going to bother wasting any more time dating guys that she didn’t see a future with.
But as soon as she looked up at him and met his stupid smile with her wide-eyed, shocked expression, she knew it was just a joke. No ring for her.
Immediately, she narrowed her eyes at Theo and drew her hand away from his shirt, then sent it swinging back down to whack him in the chest. “I hate you. I hope you’re walking down the road one day and get hit by a car. Like, not enough to kill you, just put you in a cast for a few weeks.” Freyja was grinning before she could even finish speaking, though she still rolled her eyes, trying to keep up the act.
Finally, Freyja looked back down at the little tab of tape he pointed out, briefly thinking about how adorable it was that he’d left a pull string for his box of tricks. She’d only snorted at his story of finding somebody to wrap it, knowing that Theo was probably the only person capable of such a shitshow. She’d definitely be the one wrapping his Christmas gifts this year━except for the ones that were for her, of course. She wanted another gift wrapped horrendously like the one in her hands.
Freyja grabbed onto the tab and peeled it back, revealing the first gift out of, apparently, a whole load of them. The cute images had caught her eye at first, had her grinning before she actually read it. A fucking cooking class. What a dick.
She was moving quickly again, her hand coming back up to smack him twice on the bicep, and then trying to push him away at the chest, though her angry facade was ruined by an intruding smile and a loud laugh. “You’re the worst! Get off of me, I don’t even like you!” She howled, turning her face away from him. “I’m gonna set your apartment on fire next time for real, and it’s all your fault. I’m gonna tie you to your own bed and burn it down!” She promised, though her words were weightless, and obviously so in the midst of all her laughter.
“Go away and let me get in the car so I can open your next stupid gift, and if its just another mean one then you’re taking me home.” Freyja turned her face back to him to smile, shaking her head lightly. Part of her still felt guilty for setting off the smoke alarm, but it hadn’t been the first (or last) time she’d tried to cook for them and burned whatever it was. She’d been a nuisance in the kitchen ever since she was little, and that wasn’t going to change. But, at least he could joke about it━she figured that meant he’d forgiven her for it.

Clucking his tongue, Theo narrowed his eyes at Freyja. She was as happy to wind him up as he had been to do the same to her from the moment they’d met, figuring out pretty quickly that the other would always have some sort of witty come back. It was like it had always been with his brother, except magnified so much. He growled under his breath now, giving her a little nudge with his hips as he pulled her in. ”I said innocent, not boring,” he corrected her. ”We didn’t try and drown each other though, that might’ve spiced things up a little more than our parents would’ve been happy with.” Japan had been an incredible place to celebrate in though and even if his dad was off base, they’d always tried to get out of those chain-linked confines to do something. As they’d gotten older the plans had become more elaborate before collapsing like a house of cards when Frank was on the other side of the world and even emailed stuff had a tendency to fall off the edge of the world on its way to finding him. It hadn’t stopped the two of them trying, the cord stretching between them no matter how far it had to go. Freyja wasn’t a twin to any of her brothers but he knew how close they were, especially the brother she’d lost, whose presence had to have been a hole in her life today. Tonight was an elaborate plan, her day with her family the basis for that house of cards, everything else built carefully on top, layers of plans leading up to the pinnacle. There was a good chance, he thought as he started into his asshole routine to wind her up about the gifts, it was all going to come tumbling down before he ever got to that point. He fully expected her to swing for him when he brought up the ring but that was shock on her face instead and that asshole feeling intensified. Theo pressed his lips together, a laugh rumbling out as she freed her hand from his shirt and thumped him on the chest. ”Wow,” he snorted. ”If I’d known I was gonna get cursed for that I might’ve really put a ring in instead. Someone that ready to love me forever is definitely a keeper.” And she was. As she rolled her eyes at him, he dipped his head, kissed those grinning lips softly. ”I am sorry,” he murmured, an innocent little boy look back in his eyes. ”Please don’t mow me down with your car, not unless me ending up in a cast means I get you as my nurse.” He made a low sound in his throat as he looked her up and down as though he was trying to picture her in a little white dress. That wasn’t gonna win him any prizes, the first gift in the parcel might not either. His teeth sunk into his lower lip as he wriggled the tape at her in demonstration. There was a chance he’d get hit again … a real good one. ”For a kid I think he did a pretty good job. I was gonna get him to write the tag too but it was chalk or crayon and I thought … not quite the feel I was going for…” He was babbling, waiting as she pulled the tab back. The white paper gleamed amongst the plum, revealing another plum layer beneath, just as badly taped when Freyja pulled it free. The laughter rolled up as she did just what he thought, smacking at his arm before she tried to push him away. ”Hey, hey, come on. It’s perfect. I could’ve been a real dick and bought you a fire extinguisher instead. Wow”” He actually rocked back on his heels, clutching at his chest with one hand as she laughed. Another threat, at this rate he was gonna be sleeping with one eye open. Shaking his head, Theo eased back in, rotating his arm like she’d really slugged him. He wasn’t going away, not yet. He lifted his hand as she turned back at him, smiling enough to soften all of her blows. ”Would I be that mean the whole time?” he asked, his voice a low rumble. He skimmed his fingers up, curling them around the nape of her neck as he kissed the spot between her eyes brows and then her lips. ”In the car. You open one more layer and then I’m taking you to really celebrate. Not at home.” Theo let himself linger with one more kiss before he slid his hand down her back, fingers pressed between the icy glass of the window and the door. A fumble with the lock and he had the door open. Unlike their first date he didn’t drop to one knee, hell, if he tried it now she might just kick him in the teeth. ”Get in and you can start tearing off the next layer.” Theo smacked a last kiss and drew back. He trotted around the front of the car, eyes on her hands as she got herself in. This was the one, well, the one before the one if he’d gotten this in the right order. The box of tissues was in the glovebox ready, along with the tigerbalm for all those bruises later. Slipping into the car, he twisted towards her, easing one knee half up onto the seat to watch her peel back the paper and reveal the dark velvet box, long and slim. ”I’ve got an admission to make,” he said softly. ”I might’ve done something when you were sleeping … I…” he cleared his throat as the necklace was revealed, a little heat rising into his face as he realised how cheesy this was probably to sound. ”Up until you started staying over the only thing I ever heard at night was my own heartbeat and it’s … it’s not really hearing as much as feeling it echo in my head. Then you were there and I could feel yours too.” He cleared his throat, touching a hand to his chest where she usually lay then, trailing his fingers up to tap against his head, just above one ear. She’d stirred as he’d slipped the fitbit onto her wrist weeks ago, snuggling closer as he’d just watched her, feeling those two beats in sympatico in every bone of his body.

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ After all the smacks and threats had come to a conclusion (for now), it was just the two of them left there, against his car, smiling at each other like a bunch of lovestruck idiots. He’d say another funny thing to make her laugh, and cool down her temper (even if she was only joking), and they’d lay a few more kisses on each other. And, even simply put, it was… the best thing Freyja had ever experienced. She thought she knew just how much she loved him in that moment, thinking about how right her mother was, that she was absolutely and positively head over heels for this big, bumbling idiot that wrapped the worst presents she’d ever seen.
Freyja turned, pulling open the door once he was gone, green eyes following him for a moment before she sat down just a minute before he did. She looked down at the first, most insulting piece of paper she’d ever seen with a small smile, and put it in a free cup holder, giving him a look as she did. It was supposed to be menacing, but her wide, toothy smile gave everything away.
She pulled off her gloves next, tossing them on top of the paper next to her, making herself at home at that point. If it was another terrible present, she wanted to make sure her knuckles wouldn’t have any material on them to soften the blow. But, as she tore through the next layer and pulled out the box, she didn’t think she’d get to punch him. Unless it was a pencil or something, but she hoped he had enough sense to not get such a fancy case for a joke. Maybe that was part of the trick, though.
'I’ve got an admission to make, I might’ve done something when you were sleeping … I…'
Freyja glanced up at him as he spoke, furrowing her brow again as she listened. No, this one was definitely not some sort of trick or a joke. She flipped open the top with her thumbs, eyeing the strangely shaped necklace for a moment. Carefully, she set the box down on the rest of the plum paper and lifted the jewelry, letting both tiers fall and appear how they were supposed to as she held it up.
Freyja continued to eye the necklace as he explained, a thick feeling forming in her throat, her eyes beginning to burn with tears. She glanced over as he finished, watching him touch his chest, and then above his ear. Her lips were parted by then, and she let out a soft sob as she watched him, tears beginning to slide down her cheeks. Freyja looked back at the necklace, swallowing thickly. “Is this… our...?” When he said he’d done something while she was sleeping━the shapes that formed the heartbeats weren’t random, they were theirs, showing how they beat together.
She didn’t think she’d ever received a gift like this. Something so heart warming, and fucking beautiful at the same time. Her mouth wasn’t dry, not as she started crying, but she couldn’t get anything out. Freyja slowly lowered her hands, letting it fold back into the box, though she didn’t fully let go, the chains still wrapped around the tips of her index and middle fingers. She turned her head to look at him again, staring into his eyes, and finding herself wanting to say one thing. One admission, because it seemed like the only appropriate response. It was then that she realized she’d had no idea just how much she loved him a few seconds prior, when they were outside by the car. Absolutely no clue, because this feeling went above and beyond anything she’d ever felt before.
Surely, with this gift, he was admitting the same thing to her, wasn’t he? You didn’t… give somebody something like this without feeling that way. But, if he wasn’t saying it, then she wasn’t sure she should, either. What if she made the rest of their night awkward? What if she ruined it? This… had to be the peak of their date (she wasn’t sure how he was going to top this, but maybe he would, and maybe she’d continue crying) and she wasn’t going to do anything to make it nosedive.
Freyja hoped he knew, though. She tried to tell him with her eyes.
It was only a moment or two’s hesitation before she was pulling one hand away, the other keeping the box secured, and abruptly leaning over to kiss him. Her free palm went to the back of his head, trying to kiss him despite the fact that she’d let out another sob, eyes squeezing shut in an attempt to stop the tears from escaping.
Freyja didn’t pull away, didn’t back up even an inch as she moved to rest their foreheads together. She swallowed again, opening her eyes up to look at him the best she could while they were so close. Her fingers were buried in his hair, where they always seemed to be whenever she was this close to him.
“Spend Christmas with my family.” Freyja spoke gently. She had meant it to be a question, she was asking, but it hadn’t exactly come out that way. She wanted him to meet them━or, rather, for them to meet him. She wanted her family to finally be introduced to the man she’d been gushing about for months, the man she could whole-heartedly see herself spending the rest of her life with.
And, she thought, if the gift was his way of saying ‘I love you’, then the invitation was her’s.

He was an asshole. Frank had told him that enough times growing up and Freyja had thrown it at him more than a time or two, that grin on her face that softened any blow from those unfiltered lips. Eyeing the voucher she tucked in the cup holder Theo knew without a doubt that he really was. Every joke he’d taped up in those layers proving the point that he tried to disprove with everything else.
He was an asshole. With a heart. One that it hadn’t taken five minutes for Freyja to steal. What he had left of it had fluttered like a trapped bird in his throat as he scurried across the square one Thursday afternoon. His phone to his ear he’d jabbered at Freyja, listening to the Daily’s office buzz with sound behind her. Sure that she wasn’t here to see him do this. A nudge of his shoulder against the jeweler’s door, a laughing lie about the sound of the bell before he’d hung up. She hadn’t a clue that he was getting a piece made for her, hadn’t sucked in a breath with the secret anticipation that what he was bringing back out of those doors two weeks later was a ring in a small square box.
Hey, it could’ve been different when she’d had her up against the door of the car, joking about being careful with the landmine of a gift in case the ring had slithered away but even then Freyja had known, at least most of the way, that he was joking. This … this was just different.
Nerves knotted themselves in Theo’s stomach as he reached out to fiddle with her gloves, folding them up, spreading the voucher out smooth as she began to tear at the paper. This could fall flatter, the sentiment behind what he’d done a step too far despite all the ones they’d taken. His heart took up that flutter again, bashing itself against his ribs as cleared his throat and started to come clean. His lips twitched in an anxious smile, his voice growing hoarser as he told her how he’d slipped the fitbit onto her wrist, taking a trace of her heart beat as he’d felt it in his bones. Hazel eyes dropped to her fingers as she lifted the necklace from the box, both tiers dripping from her fingers.
There was a glimmer in her eyes as she looked up at him, matching his own. Theo rubbed his palm over his chest, trying to ease that flutter back before he raised his fingertips to his ear. Then she was sobbing. Oh God, he had taken a step too far. Shit. ”Hey, come on, don’t get it wet,” he joked, his voice thick. He closed the gap, his fingers grasping her chin delicately, his thumb coming up to brush the tears from that cheek, his other hand cupping the other. ”Yeah,” he admitted. He dropped one hand, a finger touching the top one first. ”Yours and mine. You can see that little blip where you snored, right there…” He touched the lower one, tracing the jagged lines of their heartbeats, recreated perfectly from those little digital readouts.
Back in his car the day he’d picked it up, he traced his thumb over them. The metal warm under his touch, the echo of what he felt still in his bones as the town had carried on around him, completely unaware of the absolute sap feeling his eyes burn at the sight of a necklace. Teeth gripping at his lip now, Theo watched Freyja lower her hands, the two tracings settling back in the velvet folds. God she was quiet, too quiet as she looked up at him with those shimmering blue eyes. ”If you don’t like it … the jeweler can make something else … I can …” The words were stuttering out of his mouth, nerves threatening to choke him as Freyja lifted a hand from the box to draw him in. Her palm at the back of his head, another sob rolling through her that had the tears breaking over his own lashes as he touched his lips to the corner of her mouth. ”It’s OK…” he breathed against her skin. His own hand cupping her jaw again, his thumb trail back and forth on her cheek. At least he hoped it was.
Tears of happiness weren’t an unfamiliar concept to him. Hell, Frank accused him of crying at everything, but this was … more than just a thank you. This was emotion stoppering up in his throat, threatening to mule kick him in the chest. He continued to murmur little nothings, his lips skimming her skin as she rested her brow on his, big blue eyes opening to meet his. Theo smiled, a slow curve of his lips as he let his other hand slide down to settle on her leg and anchor her there. ”You want me there?” he asked hoarsely, knowing now that he sure as hell couldn’t wake up alone on Christmas morning, not even to the sound of Frank hollering him out of bed to tear into the gifts like they were five again. ”Yeah, yeah I’ll be there. No shotguns though, huh? I don’t want your brothers seeing me make you do this and deciding to pepper my ass with buck shot. It’s too fine an ass to destroy, even for the woman who’s got my heart.” The woman I love. The words rasped in his throat, unspoken aloud. God, how could he have not fallen head over heels in love with this woman.

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ He was rambling nervously, telling her he could get something else made, as if there was any way she could hate it. As if she wouldn’t be wearing it for the rest of her days━as long they were spent with Theo, and she desperately hoped they would be. She could do this with him forever; sit around and deal with his sappiness, constantly flipping back and forth from smacking his arm to crying over some thoughtful and amazing thing he’d done. What she couldn’t take, though, was swallowing her admission of love for him. It was getting harder by the second, causing a painful lump to form in the midst of all her crying. She hadn’t expected this, to be forcefully shoved into admitting her love for him, dying for the courage to let him know just how she felt.
Freyja pushed it away, though. Set the secret into a little box for now, instead embracing him, and inviting him for Christmas with her family. Maybe that was more responsibility than an ‘I love you’, she thought afterwards━it was easy to admit something to each other private, but a whole other to sit through dinner with her family during one of the biggest holidays. He’d accepted before she could take it back, though, and that was more proof for her to file away; he did love her. He proved it with every action. The only issue was that neither of them could grow a pair and say it.
“Of course I do, baby.” Freyja whispered, smiling at him the best she could, his eyes looking like they had combined into one with how close she was to him. An adorable, little cyclops. The thought had her grin becoming wider, a deeper and more permanent entity on her face, something to ward off the tears.
His jokes helped, too. Freyja laughed softly, tossing her head back, though she felt her heart tug again when he called her the woman who had his heart. She settled after a moment, looking back at Theo once more, a few inches from his face this time. Her hand still in his hair, still keeping multiple connections between them. Freyja bit her lip, as if that could really stop her from letting the words fall out of her mouth as they so desperately wanted to.
“I’m not making any promises,” Freyja joked, letting her head tilt to the side a bit as she admired him, fingertips tracing little spirals at the back of his head. “Especially not if you keep making me cry. Then I’ll tell them that’s all I do when I’m with you.” Freyja laughed lightly before she sniffled, leaning in for another soft peck before she pulled as far back as possible without letting her fingers slip from his hair. She smiled, dipping her chin down a bit, giving him a playful look. “So you better think long and hard about our next destination, Damasca.” Freyja let it come out as a little challenge, holding narrowed eye contact with him for a moment before she finally pulled her hand away, though the smile was still permanent on her lips.
Her hands went back to the necklace, tracing over the metal shapes before she held the chain once more, being as delicate with it as possible. Freyja unclipped one side from the other before reaching behind her neck and clasping them together again. She dropped the chain then, letting the necklace fall to its spot on her chest; where it belonged, and where it would always be.

Even when the entire world had been silent, he hadn’t been a nervous kid. Why would he have needed to be when Frank was always there was his ears, interpreting the world for him in quick flurries of their hands? Maybe there’d been a flutter in his chest when he’d boarded that first plane away from Okinawa, a stronger one when he’d gone on campus at Whitmore for the first time but that had all faded. The dreams, the bodies, nothing had left his heart trapped in his chest like a caged bird for long but this … the necklace, the birthday plans, Freyja, they’d kept him on edge for a week. Hell, he still wasn’t sure how he’d managed to keep it all secret. No matter how hard he tried to bite it back now those nerves were spilling out in the ramble of words. Theo wanted to bite down on his tongue but it felt like it would just squirm free anyway.
He drew in a ragged breath, trying to swallow that trapped bird back as Freyja’s sobs had shaken her. Her body had shuddered under his hands, the two of them teared up enough that he’d been looking at her blurrily as her offer had slipped out. Christmas with her family. That was big … huge … and it should’ve had him choking on that sudden jolt that had gone through his chest but it didn’t. Theo felt it slipping away as she smiled up at him. All the knots slithering undone at once as she called him baby. Closing that minute gap between them he kissed her fiercely for a moment, his hand squeezing her leg in emphasis. ”Then I’ll be there,” he whispered against her lips. Even if it did mean being lined up in front of the firing squad of her brothers.
Admitting it probably hadn’t been the best bet but the way Freyja tossed her head back and laughed had him chuckling ruefully. Theo let his forehead drift to her shoulder for a moment, his cheek brushing her neck as he shook his head. ”It’s not funny,” he warned, slipping his hand up from her thigh to her hip. He lifted his head again, trying to keep a straight face but she was joking back, studying him from those big green eyes. A low sound rumbled in his throat as Freyja’s fingers continued to trace circles on his scalp. Theo sucked in a breath at her threat though, then visibly trapped the tip of his tongue between his teeth. He pulled his hand from her hip, wiggling his fingers in the air. ”Maybe you wanna give me the rest of that back then…” he drawled lightly. ”These are happy tears though … right?” The hand at her jaw trailed down the line of her tears on her cheek, smoothing the moisture away.
Theo snorted lightly as he closed that space between the two of them. His mouth skimmed hers, easing over those curved lips, his teeth nipping lightly before he drew back. This time he managed serious, hazel eyes narrowing. ”Did you think I didn’t think long and hard about everything already? Pfffffft. She of little faith.” He let her draw back, watched as she took the necklace back from the box. Theo’s fingers curled then settled onto his own lap as Freyja clipped it around her neck. ”It looks amazing,” he said lightly. Leaning in as he slipped his hand into his pocket for the keys, he nuzzled a kiss against her temple. ”You’re amazing. Don’t kill me for this next part though. Not even like running me down to break my leg to kill me.” Hazel eyes narrowed to slits in warning before he started the car. This … this part wasn’t even pivotal but as much preparation had gone into it as the rest and it could just as easily blow up in his face.
Or Frank’s. Theo started the car, eased out onto the road. He didn’t need to really pay attention to where he was going, had driven this route a thousand times before but never with Freyja. This was a first and maybe, maybe, that bird was fluttering in his chest again as he turned onto the road that’d take them from the campus onto the road back towards Mystic Falls. Like he usually did now his right hand slipped from the wheel as he drove, slipping down to settle on the curve of her knee. ”How were the birthday celebrations with the family?” One dark brow rose, as he glanced over at her, a corner of his mouth ticking up. A little change of subject, a nudge away from where they were going to keep that surprise under a metaphorical yard of plum paper and sticky tape too.

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ ‘These are happy tears though … right?’
Of course they were. How could they be anything but? Theo had never made any negative emotions rise out of Freyja; when she was playfully hitting him or threatening his life, or even during the few times she had actually been annoyed with him, it always came from a place of love. Their relationship was full of positives━she felt unbearably happy when she was with Theo, and she couldn’t see anything changing that. He made her laugh and smile and cry happy tears, especially when he did incredibly thoughtful things like this. “Yeah,” She whispered back to him, sniffling lightly and nodding, giving Theo another one of those smiles that was just for him.
She hummed quietly as he nipped her lips, but she was pulling back a moment or two later, wanting to look over the rest of his incredibly adorable face. The one she hadn’t stopped admiring since she’d first met eyes with him on campus━the one she didn’t want to stop admiring for as long as she could. “Honestly, I thought we were just gonna go back to your place, grab some pizza and fuck all night.” Freyja laughed gently in response, nails scraping over his roots gently. “This is a lot sweeter, though. Thank you.” Her voice became quieter over the last few words, her green eyes on his hazel ones. It wasn’t as if she’d expected him to only put in a half effort━she would’ve been more than happy with a few rounds between the sheets with him━but this had all been such a big surprise already, and so, so thoughtful. She hadn’t thought he’d really get her anything, but part of Freyja figured she shouldn’t have expected anything less from Theo, the big teddy bear, but it made her feel so, so valued by him.
Freyja slipped on the necklace next, her grin only widening at the kiss he laid on her, along with the compliments. He made her feel so special, and she could only hope that, between all the smacks and insults, he knew that he was important to her, too.
‘You’re amazing. Don’t kill me for this next part though. Not even like running me down to break my leg to kill me.’
She laughed again, turning her head to catch the tail end of his glare before he was starting up the car. Each of Freyja’s hands went to a vent, letting the air blow onto her cold digits. “Still not making any promises. It’s either gonna be me or my brothers, you gotta die somehow,” She joked, catching herself before she let any more words fall out of her mouth. Words like, ‘I would choose me, if I were you. Better to let the one who loves you kill you, I’ll probably make sure you suffer less.’ But she was happy she’d filtered herself for once.
Tonight was going to be really difficult if he kept being so cute, because she was going to have to continuously stop herself from letting the admission slip out. It just kept seeming like the right response, despite her unfamiliarity with it. She’d had one other serious boyfriend in her life, and she’d known him since they were kids; he’d loved her from before they started dating, and so that was… easier. Different. This was a whole new ballgame.
Freyja clipped in her seatbelt and then moved her left hand to his after it rested on her knee, curling her fingers around it. She pressed her palm to the back of his, turning her chin over to give him another grin. This part was definitely going to need filtering, too, but she didn’t know if she could manage it. “Good! Had to get up super early again to do chores, and, like, it’s not even shovelling cow shit that’s so sucky, it’s literally just finding the will to get out of bed at that God forsaken hour. But Jack came and threw shit at me, then insulted me ‘til I had to get up and kick his ass.” She laughed lightly, “My mom made lunch and cake, then they all tormented me about you.” A snort came out then, though it only took a moment for her to realize that this was probably one of the things she should’ve been censoring. She squeezed his hand lightly, the butterflies in her stomach not enough to warn her to keep her mouth shut.
She turned her head forward, staring out the windshield as she kept rambling, a big smile on her face, cheeks going pink. Maybe, if she said too much, it would spur on a conversation that would further their relationship. Or she’d just make them both uncomfortable.
“My mom was just like, ‘make sure you bring him for Christmas!’ and I was like, whooaaa, that’s a big step,” In an instant, Freyja was smirking at Theo again, hoping to turn this on him now. “But then you violated me in my sleep to get me this sweet ass gift, so I guess it’s not that big of a step.” She snickered. She wanted to make it clear that she wasn’t only asking because her mom had told her to; she wanted him there, Freyja just hadn’t known whether or not it was the right time to ask. But then he’d busted out that terribly-wrapped necklace, and she knew she had to say it. It was a closer, more forgiving step than saying ‘I love you’ at the wrong time.
Finally, though, the worst of it was out, and she was able to relax a bit. To stop rambling, and start speaking like a normal human once again. “How was your day? Any wild-ass cells start mutating in one of your classes? Make some sort of crazy… demon plant?” If she was being honest, she wasn’t exactly sure what they did in biology classes. Freyja had never taken one, never wanted or needed to, but she was sure of a few things about them━one, was that they were super hard, and that Theo was way smarter than anybody gave him credit for. Which meant that he was subsequently incredibly nerdy and she’d have to beat him up for it. Give him a wedgie━like a bully from a preteen movie or something━and toughen him up.

For just a second she’d worried him. That shudder through her body as she’d leaned into him bordering on that edge of had he gone too far. He’d never been like this with anybody else, had never felt this and the learning curve felt Everest steep but every step up it he knew he had Freyja right there with him. Protecting him, making him laugh, kicking his ass whenever he needed it and this … this had bordered between them. He’d bit down on his tongue, joking as he’d suggested she pass the gift back but there’d been a serious edge to his question as he swiped the pad of his thumb over her cheek. ”Good,” Theo murmured softly. Leaning in he touched his lips to her smile, drinking in its potency like sunshine through the rain, the smile through the tears.
He nipped at that smile, the pit of his stomach flipping as it always did when it drew a hum out of her. Theo pressed his lips together, eyes narrowing as he let mock hurt over his plans for the night roll out. How dare? He grumbled low in his throat, settling back against his seat as he watched her and shook his head. ”Nope. That’s every other night of the week,” he said on a snort. ”Today’s for inventiveness. You’re welcome.” His smile softened, slanted as he heard her voice soften. All of these plans had been about her, celebrating the fact that she’d amazingly come into his life in the first place.
With his heartbeat around her neck he felt his heart give a little lurch in his chest. Easing close, Theo kissed the tender skin of her temple, murmuring to her in half apology before he eased back to buckle up and start the car up. He smiled sweetly, cranking the heating for her as he shook his head. ”You, always you, even if you’re the scarier of the two options. I’d rather die at my Warrior Princess’ hands.” At the age of 80, in bed with her, that had become his goal in the last couple of months, maybe nudging it to 90 or 95 if he was really lucky.
Knowing they’d settle as they always did when he started up the car and pulled out onto the road, Theo let his hand settle on her knee as he drove, thumb sweeping back and forth over her thigh when Freyja’s hand settled over his. His eyes were on the road for the most part but they ticked to her face to catch her grin as she told him how the day went with her family. Sucking in a breath, he let it out in a mock hiss. ”That’s because you’re spoiled now. All those lazy mornings in bed with your servant waiting on you hand and foot.” He clucked his tongue in censure before he looked at her and grinned. ”I’m so proud of your ass kicking skills.” A blush rose up his cheeks faintly, his teeth raking over his lower lip as he shook his head. ”I hope you told them how incredible I am. I feel like I need the brownie points before Christmas.” Before he faced the family. Oh boy.
He sucked in a breath then, his heart hitting triple time in his chest. Theo watched the road, turning onto one of the side roads that led through the woods, not to the main part of town, but the quickest route. Nerves thrummed under his skin, anticipation, the faint bite of nerves, an affection that had only grown deeper with every moment he got to be with her. A glance aside almost had his attention drifting from the road, the smile, the blush rising up her cheeks. Oh that was adoration in the pit of his stomach. ”Violation one week, the family the next, it’s fast … not too fast though. I wanna meet them, I’m glad you asked me.” Frank was gonna have to handle Christmas semi-alone but he’d get over it.
Theo’s grin drew as the car drifted towards his little set up. ”You mean other than spending three hours wrapping that up? Not wild at all. The new lifeform’s grown up enough to be potty trained now, I’m so proud, he even calls me dad … It was … quiet … I think … I had these wild plans going around in my head so I was a little distracted. I think the students might’ve noticed … some might’ve taken advantage.” He narrowed his eyes, pretending to consider for a moment. It had like all of his days lately, his hand on his phone every few minutes, the thought of his plans for later adding some wattage to his smile. Good days, almost entirely good days every single one of them now.

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ Warrior Princess. Fuck, did she ever love him. A cute little nickname, a reference to a night that had been so terrible for him; one where she’d worried profusely and held him until he stopped shaking. Where they’d gone a step further━without actually addressing it out loud. But things had definitely been different after that night; she felt closer to him, and more protective. Like she’d kill absolutely anybody who even looked at him the wrong way. Warrior Princess might’ve been the perfect word to describe how Freyja felt.
‘That’s because you’re spoiled now. All those lazy mornings in bed with your servant waiting on you hand and foot.’
Freyja turned her head, raising her brows at him. “Oh, you’re my servant now? If I’d known that, I would’ve been ordering you around so much more. Just you wait, buddy,” She couldn’t help the giggle that came after her words, bubbling up from her chest, where she’d felt all the nerves while she was rambling about her family. She was never like this━usually Freyja was straight up, told people how she felt and didn’t give a shit, but she wanted this to last. Theo was… absolutely melting her, and━for some reason━she didn’t want to bust his balls more than she had to. Didn’t want to risk saying the wrong thing and scaring him off, if she even could at that point. Freyja wasn’t conceited by any means, but she would put her money on the idea that Theo was just as smitten with her as she was with him.
“I did. My mom’s in love with you now, so, good luck. I think I’ll probably lose you to her; she can cook.” Freyja snorted lightly, turning her head to look out the window. She slid her other hand over blindly, slipping it underneath his so that she was sandwiching his hand with her much smaller ones. She furrowed her brow at their surroundings, but a moment later he was speaking again, assuring her that it wasn’t too fast and that he did want to meet her family, even with the threat of her mother’s love and her brothers and their shotguns. Freyja smiled at him, letting the thumb of her top hand sweep over his knuckles back and forth, as soft as ever. She remembered kissing them when he’d broken apart in the shower, when they’d been split and he’d been shaking like a leaf. Her man, the one who towered over her and could lift her like she’d weighed nothing, had been stronger than ever that night. He’d stuck through it, and he’d been okay in the end. That’s all that mattered; and she adored him more than ever.
Especially when he was such a fucking dork. She watched and listened while he went on about his day, and everything around him started to get fuzzy. It was that same feeling she’d gotten on their first date, when he’d been rambling about some shit and she’d interrupted him with a kiss. She still had his hand wrapped up in his, couldn’t keep from touching him at that point, but she wanted to lean over and end up running them off the road, anyways. It was the feeling that had her shoving him against his car after dinner, and groping him like she’d already owned it. Not like now━because she definitely did own him now━but with all of the ferocity that one shouldn’t show on a first date. They’d made it to the winter, though, a few months under their collective belt, and yet she still couldn’t control herself around him.
She was leaning over quickly, pecking his cheek, then leaning back and deciding that he needed another. One more kiss before Freyja was finally sitting normally again, beaming at her date, her boyfriend, and probably the cutest man she’d ever met. She definitely wouldn’t fall asleep on him this time. “Well, good for them. Taking advantage of you is fun,” She said cheekily, before her green eyes flicked back out to the road, and the trees lining it.
“Uh… did you take me out here to kill me and bury the body? Because if it’s the sex, I can work on it. If it’s the personality, then, well… that’s your fault for not being cool enough to see how funny I am.” Freyja laughed lightly, and turned her head to Theo once more. “Or is this where you ‘force yourself on me’ and I run out of the car and get chopped up by an axe murderer? ‘Cause, honey, you wouldn’t be forcing me.” She was leaning closer then, whispering to him, “But I can pretend that you are, if you want. It’ll be hot.” Freyja closed her teeth around his earlobe gently, giving it a little tug before she let go, and leaned back to beam a cheeky smile at him. Whatever he was planning was probably super romantic━as he was definitely the sap out of the two of them━and she figured it was best to get all of her vulgar jokes out of the way before she was crying again. Crying happy tears, over how much love was overflowing in her heart for him.

For a slow build of texts and phone conversations, it was incredible how quickly they’d settled into each other’s lives after that first date. The messages were still there, her voice on the phone line in the middle of the afternoon when he was trailing from class to class and had called just because he could. There was so much more though, Freyja slotting into his life like a puzzle piece he hadn’t realised was missing from the bigger picture. He’d been happy without her, had a life before she’d come into it but it was something more now. Something so much better.
Not that he was gonna go swelling her head any further with that news today. Never could do that.
Keeping his eyes on the road he tried to squelch the grin as he saw her turn her head out of the corner of his eye. Her eyebrows rising, maybe warning for a moment, although that fell flat the minute she started to giggle. About as fierce as a puppy chewing on a shoelace, at least to him, to everybody else … Xena. ”Mm hmm,” he murmured, the fingertips of the hand on the wheel tapping lightly as his grin broke free again. ”I guess I’m gonna have to step up my game with it now you know. Maybe dig the uniform out of the closet. I hope it still fits.” Theo mock frowned for a moment, wiggling his shoulders like he was considering it. Tomorrow morning he’d do as he’d suggested he already had, coffee, breakfast, a newspaper, all hand delivered before he slipped back under the covers with her.
The sort of TLC he hoped her parents and brothers were gonna hear about. The joke about needing the brownie points had only been half kidding. He didn’t know how they were gonna look at him and not see what he felt for her, when he was pretty damn sure it was written all over his face the minute she walked in the room, but if they didn’t … he wanted them to know that this wasn’t just him stringing along a pretty face for fun. God she was so much more, what he felt consuming him from the inside out. It glowed as she teased him about her mom. ”What can I say, I’m cat nip for Bentley women,” Theo drawled lightly. His own brows were rising now, hazel eyes cutting over to her as she admitted her mom could cook. ”In love with me and she’s in no risk of burning my apartment down? You’re right, I might have to steal your mom…” He sighed wistfully, looking pained for just a heartbeat before he rubbed his hand lightly up and down her thigh in reassurance. Nope, it was too late, he wasn’t going anywhere. Not even if the shotguns emerged Christmas morning.
She’d hold his hand if he ended up with an ass full of shotgun pellets, that same look of concern on her face there had been when he’d turned up at the apartment, half broken by what he’d seen in the alleyway. He swallowed hard, pushing the thought from his mind as spun his little tale of an afternoon in the science lab, a place never quite as interesting as you’d ever believe. It was a lot of measuring, a lot of time spent hunched over a computer with data scrolling and a headache brewing. It was part of the reason he’d jumped ship from the hospital in the first place, he needed more than that, room to breathe and actually see another human being from time to time. Huffing out a laugh, he tilted his head slightly. ”At the rate I’m going they’re all gonna be A students by the end of the year, just automatic passes…” Or it’d be a string of F’s, her initial scrawled on every paper. Theo clucked his tongue against the back of his teeth considering it, stopped as she leaned in to kiss him, once, twice, on the cheek. ”What was that for?” he asked, his voice gravelly as he looked at her with a grin. ”Hey, you’re not meant to let them know that. I’m only meant to be a push over for you.” God and he was.
Hence tonight. Hence the plans that had him taking them the long way around to where they were going. Secrets wrapped in enigmas, wrapped in ten layers of scotch tape. The mystery was obviously getting to her too. Theo’s grin grew, a breath sucked in in mock astonishment before he made a low sound and shook his head. ”It’s too cold for digging graves, always better doing that in spring. For that comment I might have to make an exception though.” He let his mouth fall open in feigned hurt and shook his head. ”Too cold to go chasing you with my ass hanging out too. Even the axe murderers are tucked up at home staying warm. Oh my God, you’re so naughty.” The last words emerged on a husky chuckle. He was full on grinning by the time her teeth nipped at his earlobe, sending enough heat straight through the centre of him that he could’ve melted the snow out there if he needed to. ”None of the above,” he promised blithely, all wide hazel eyes.
Theo leaned forward, craning against the seatbelt as they reached the end of the road though. Ten yards on it led out onto a residential street but through the thin stand of trees on the left tiny lights glittered, the yard on the other side of the fence filled with them like some sort of fairy paradise. ”Might be something better though … depending on what you think …” Frank had been a damn rock star. The heaters on the deck were already flickering with flames, the table set with candles too. If he’d followed the instructions to a T dinner was just about ready in the stove and him and his roommate were at least a dozen miles away, leaving the glimmering wonderland to him and Freyja. He guided the car in under the car port roof on the side of the house, cut the engine off and looked over at her with his lip disappearing between his teeth again.

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ ‘What was that for?’
“It was ‘cause you’re cute.” Freyja gave him a toothy grin, narrowing her eyes playfully once he was looking at her, and shining that smile her way. Green eyes flicked down to his mouth quickly, and then back up, just taking him in. Admiring him in a way she’d never get tired of doing.
Even if he did kill her and bury her in the forest, at least she’d be staring at something pretty while he did it. “Too cold for digging graves? Yeah, that’s what all the beginners say. It’s a little more difficult, sure, but you just have to give yourself extra time. And go somewhere where you know the ground is soft.” Her smile was wider then, somewhere between mischievous and playful, testing the limits of it. But then she was flirting, drawing close and whispering to him, a little more joking than the first time she’d done it in the elevator on their first date. Still, Freyja bit his earlobe, her own little fire brewing in the pit of her stomach. He was always drawing a mix of emotions out of her, making her laugh one minute, cry the next, and then wanting to tear his clothes off. It was never a dull moment with Theo, and she loved it that way. Loved him.
She laughed when he called her naughty, pressing her nose and forehead to the side of his face after she’d bit him. Freyja just nuzzled there for a second or two and grinned, though she was tipping her head back in an instant, and pressing her tongue to the side of his face. Avoiding any beard, she licked a fat stripe from his cheekbone and up towards his temple before she was falling back into her seat and laughing loudly. Amused at herself, thinking she was the funniest person to exist, especially after causing such an abrupt end to the sensual moment. She was reaching in quickly, though, pulling her sleeve up over the heel of her palm and wiping at the slick spot he’d left. Messing with Theo was already fun, but messing with him while he was driving was her absolute favourite thing to do. It didn’t mean she wanted to torture him to no end, though, especially after how sweet he’d been. Freyja figured that the least she could do was wipe her spit from his face.
After a few moments, when Theo was leaning forward and seeming like he had spotted their destination, Freyja was following his gaze. She furrowed her brow and glared past the trees, her one hand still resting atop Theo’s on her thigh. Absentmindedly grazing at the back of his hand with her fingernails, and lightly pinching the skin over his knuckles in a few different places with the side of her index finger and thumb, over and over. She spotted the lights in the distance, though she wondered if that was his surprise, or if he’d just been distracted by it. They were twinkling lights on a dark road, sure, but Freyja probably wouldn’t have noticed them if Theo hadn’t been staring. “Better than getting murdered and/or having sex while I go out? Gonna be hard to top that,” Freyja mumbled as she stared out the window, gently joking while she was only half paying attention.
Moments later and they were pulling up to a house, the trees never really having disappeared. She narrowed her eyes at the structure, and then looked to Theo, where he was biting his lip━and doing her job, as if she’d given him permission. Freyja’s thumb flew to her buckle, undoing it quickly before she was over the centre console and pressing her lips to his. She kissed him for a moment, and then captured his lower lip between her own teeth, just barely pulling on it before she was gone again, back in her own seat. “Are we robbing this house?” Freyja asked, though she assumed it was owned by somebody he knew. If either of them was going to be planning something illegal, it would most definitely be Freyja━planning, only, though. She’d definitely chicken out before starting anything.
She was climbing out of the car quickly after that, mittens in her pockets and the rest of the wrapped monstrosity cupped in one palm and pressed against her chest for support. She opened the door with her free hand and then climbed out of the car, though they weren’t going into the front door. Freyja pretended not to see the lights shining over the fence, going through the gate and ending up in… an honest to goodness fairytale.
Tears were stinging at her eyes again as she walked onto the deck with Theo, her free hand back into his, where it belonged. She took in the decorations slowly━the lights, of course, but the heaters, too, and the candles. It was the most romantic thing she’d ever seen; the most romantic thing anybody had ever done for her. And it wasn’t tooth-rottingly sweet━it didn’t cause her to turn her nose up or furrow her brow, or get that weird feeling in her stomach like something was wrong. No, this was… perfect, in every fucking way. The perfect place, the perfect night, with the most perfect man. It was there again, the confession, sitting just within reach. If only she’d just take it, and release what felt like the most terrible pressure building within her. Freyja didn’t know how long she was going to last if he kept being so fucking amazing.
Freyja was clamping down on his hand partway through their walk across the deck, stopping in her tracks as she tugged at his hand. She turned her chin down and pouted at him, “I told you to think long and hard.” Freyja let out (what she hoped was) the most believable whimper she could manage, but a smile started to break her sad puppy face, and she was taking a few steps into him, coming up on her toes while the remnants of her present was sitting between their chests. The tears were falling onto her cheeks by then, but she knew that if her brothers were to see them now, they’d be berating her for being so soft. She wasn’t soft, not really. Gentle had never been a good adjective for Freyja, but she was soft for Theo. Like putty in his hands, though she liked to maintain the idea that he was the gooey one in the relationship. “I kind of hate you for this. Not 'run you down with my car' hate you, but still.” She whispered, laughing wetly, but it was just another way of saying ‘I love you’. Another way of peeling back a layer and showing him all of her insides, demonstrating that they were just as mushy as his.
She kissed away that confession again, kissing the burning feeling into him, as if he’d be able to read it through her lips. Kissing him under those fucking lights, and imagining all the effort it would’ve taken to set that up. All the care and planning, all the time he’d spent trying to make sure her birthday was a special one. Freyja couldn’t even fathom how lucky she was to have met him. To even be standing there with Theo, and sharing that day with him. She wanted every birthday to be like this━every birthday to be one where she had him, for the rest of her days.

He’d been rambling, goofy, in the way she always had him being. A smile on his lips, pure sap running straight through his head as he’d teased and distracted. Then she was distracting, her lips on his cheek, sending sensation sparking straight down in his neck, a lightning bolt to the heart the way it always was. He made a low sound in his throat as she told him why he’d earned it, that smile growing cockier for just a moment. ”I guess it’s a good thing for me that I’m always cute then,” he drawled lightly, a threat of laughter in that smile as he looked over at her. He was cute with her, because of her. A face nobody would’ve glanced at and called handsome lit up by what was within. She did that every time she looked at him, every time his thoughts slipped to her. It didn’t matter if he was picturing him taking her out into the woods to have his murderous way with her or trolling him for his poor grave digging skills, he adored her all the same.
Hazel eyes narrowing, he glanced sideways at her, fixed on her face for a moment in an expression of ‘oh my God, who are you. A chuckle followed, a low whistle punctuating it. ”I don’t know whether to be scary or turned on by the fact that you know all about burying people out in the woods. How much bodies have you dropped out there Bonnie?” His voice was low as he asked, streaked with mischief. She was fierce, had been from the moment they’d met, that hot tempered streak in her that would’ve had her going up against a guy three times her size without batting an eye impression. She was funny too, humour lacing everything in a way he played off of constantly and had appreciated with every cell in his body when he’d almost ended up body parts out in those woods himself.
A whisper of her voice over his skin, that low sultry tone despite the topic, the nip of her teeth at the tender skin of his earlobe. If she wasn’t careful he was gonna be running them off the road here. He had too much planned to run into a tree and ruin the night but she wasn’t making it easy. It shivered under his skin, the way it always did when he was with here, just an awareness of her presence lighting his nervous system up in a storm. A rough breath in, the desire there to pull his other hand off the wheel and cup the back of her neck. Soon. They were almost there, he could hold on …. Holy hell. A stunned laugh fell out of him as he felt the wet heat of her tongue lick up the side of his face. ”What’s worse than naughty?” he asked, turning his head to glanced at her as she was falling back laughing. ”Jesus.” If that was a portent for later it was gonna be a damn good thing that Frank was spending the night elsewhere.
Shaking his head, he somehow kept them on the road, holding on to the wheel while she rubbed the spit from his face. That crooked grin still in place as he craned forward to catch sight of what he’d had set up for tonight. He owed Frank and Kit big time for this. They’d pulled out all the stops, done him enough solids that he was going to owe both of them for an eternity. Glancing back at her he caught the glare on Freyja’s face. That thunder while she continued to toy with his hand, the sort of focus that was leaving him nervous again. ”Oh, I don’t know. Although if there was a way to go out I don’t think the latter’s too bad.” It was the way he’d want to go, in sixty or seventy years.
Teeth working at his lip, he pulled the car in, turned off the engine. Gut tied in a knot, his pulse kicking up as she was flying straight out of her seatbelt and leaning over the centre console to him. Peeling his hand off of the wheel Theo lifted his hand to her cheek, fingers tunnelling into the tousled blonde hair as Freyja was pulling out of the kiss, catching his lower lip on the way out with a gentle graze. ”I don’t think we’d get away with it if we tried,” he admitted with a grin. Frank would be on him in an instant. Calling her Bonnie earlier felt pretty apt.
Impetuous, maybe impatient, Freyja was already out of the car ahead of him. The gift clutched against her thank God. Pushing open his door slower he was following. Closing the car door gently, locking it before he strolled after her. Hands in his pockets, he trailed a yard back, waiting for the surprise to hit. Pressing his lips together, he took her hand when she offered it, smiling as she looked around, reflections of the tiny white lights gleaming in her tear filled eyes. Light everywhere, surrounding them like a thousand fireflies in the dark. Feeling the clamp of her hand on his Theo let himself be towed, his eyes crinkling at the corners again as she pouted up at him. ”Uh huh,” he drawled lightly now, knowing that he’d got her with it the moment she whimpered up at him. He didn’t need that smile breaking through, although he covered it with his own as she was rising up on her toes against him.
He slipped an arm around her waist, his lips skimming to each damp cheek as she laughed out all that candy-hate-coated love for him. ”I hate you too,” he promised with a grin, dragging his lips to her ear. He pressed them to the shell of it, then the side of her head. ”Happy birthday baby,” he managed hoarsely. She was pulling him into another kiss then, her tears salty between them. Turning them slowly, he drew her into a swaying circle, his lips gentle, thorough. ”Another layer,” he whispered hoarsely. Bringing his hand up from hers to skim her hair back from her cheek with his fingers, his thumb working over the damp heat of her cheek. Hopefully the home printed voucher for a weekend of total servitude of her choice was going to go down a little better than the first.
