━ you're perfection; my only direction. it's fire on fire ━ Ethan looked down at his bloodied, shaking hands. He couldn't process any of it. It all felt like one big fucking bad dream, one that he couldn't wake up from. Ethan squeezed his eyes shut and braced his head between his hands as tears raced down his face. He couldn't stop them even if he wanted to. Please, just wake up. He repeated in his head like a mantra and as expected, he didn't wake up. When he opened his eyes, nothing had changed. "Go home, Ethan. Just go home. Take a few days off if you need to, but just go." His captain said, making his blue eyes slowly drift up to look at him. How was he supposed to tell the girls what had happened? How was he supposed to tell them that the reason he was coming home without their dad was because Antonio had saved his life?
Ethan stood up on shaky legs and walked away from his captain without saying anything in return. His heart felt so heavy in his chest and his eyes, no matter how hard he tried, couldn't stop shedding more and more tears. Why did he have to save him? Why did he have to do it? Ethan could've come back... But not Antonio. He wasn't like him. So why? Why did he do it when he had two beautiful daughters waiting for him back home?
Ethan gulped past the cotton ball lodged in his throat and stood in front of the Alvarez's residence. Where they had taken him in. He reached for the key replica in his pocket and slowly took a step forward to unlock the door. Ethan stepped inside the household and slowly closed the door behind him. "You guys are finally home!" Gabriela headed downstairs with a grin on her lips which faded away slowly when she saw that it was only Ethan. "Hey, Ethan. Um, where's daddy?" Ela asked as her eyes slowly drifted down to look at Ethan's clothes and the blood on his hands. She looked up again to find his eyes filled with tears. "Ethan... Where's he?" Gabriela asked again as she slowly made her way down. "He's coming home right? I should... I should call him." Ethan reached for Gabriela's hand to stop her as he shook his head slowly.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry." Ethan brought her into his embrace when she immediately started sobbing. "I'll look for Eli in a bit. I just... need to make sure you're okay first." Ethan said with a small nod of his head following, his arms still wrapped around the younger, letting her cry as much as she wanted to. Her sobs were really more than enough to make his heart shatter. "I'm so sorry..." He kept repeating again and again as if that would make it any better. He doubted anything could make this situation any better right now. Ethan sat her down and slowly made his way into the kitchen to get her something warm to drink before he moved back to sit next to her. "W-What h-happened?" Gabriela asked, her tears still rushing down her face. "Your dad, he... saved my life. I lost him after that. It all happened so, um, quickly... I'm so sorry, kiddo. I.. tried. I tried." Ethan felt his heart ache even more as she continued to sob painfully. "I m-miss him a-a-already." Ethan nodded his head slowly. "Me too, kiddo... Me too." His scent still lingered in the house. It felt like he was still here but he knew the answer to that.
Ethan couldn't do anything else other than hold onto her and comfort her. He wasn't so sure there was anything else to do.

That day had started out like any other. Antonio and Ethan had headed out together for the start of their shift that morning and before he’d left Antonio had kissed both the girls and told them that he loved them and that he would see them that evening the same way he always did. His job was dangerous, he had known that when he had decided that he wanted to become a firefighter, but it was something that he was good at and he made a difference and that was something that he had needed in his life after living for as long as he had. Antonio had been looking out for himself for such a long time that he always made it home at the end of his shift but that day only one of them would make it home. The call had come in just like every other but this time was different. A kid had gone missing and they were being called in to join the search and rescue efforts. The kid had disappeared near the falls and out there there were any number of places that he could have gone so they all had to spread out and search and Antonio and Ethan had headed off together to find the boy. Their search had eventually brought them to a cave in the woods and after finding the kid’s hat just inside the mouth of the cave they had called for backup before heading inside. The deeper they got the more disturbing it became, there were drag marks and blood inside the cave and Antonio was instantly on the alert. Deeper and deeper into the cave they had headed and finally they reached a cavern. Calling out to the boy, this time they heard his muffled cries in return and they moved forward. The boy was trapped and digging him out took time but eventually he was freed, albeit not before the creature responsible for taking him showed up. “Get him out of here, I’ll hold him off!” Antonio told Ethan as the creature launched itself at him. Without even thinking about it he started fighting back, using all of his abilities to keep the creature at bay. It was determined but so was Antonio and once Ethan and the boy were clear of the cave he was able to use his dragon’s breath to fry the creature but not before it got a few good slashes in. Blood was seeping through his protective gear by the time he was able to rejoin Ethan and the boy despite his efforts to stop it and it was slow, painful going for the dragon but they started heading back to the surface. The worst should have been over but Antonio felt the earthquake just as it began. Normally they weren’t too bad in Virginia but they were below ground so it was that much worse and the already unstable cave began to shake. Doing his best to keep his footing, Antonio just managed to dodge some falling rocks and he tried to hurry them along but he knew that he was just slowing them down. Looking up just in time to see a large part of the roof collapse, Antonio was just able to push Ethan and the boy out of the way before the roof fell and he was trapped on the other side of it, his head hitting the ground hard as he hit the floor. Everything went black after that and Antonio knew how easy it would have been to give up but through the darkness that threatened to consume him there was a shining light – the girls and Ethan. He could hear the three of them telling him to wake up, to keep fighting and find his way back to them, and some time later Antonio finally came to. He tried calling out to anyone who might be able to hear him, certain that Ethan would have had the whole team down there looking for him if he could, but no matter how loud he shouted no response came so he knew that he was on his own. Pulling his phone out of his pocket he wasn’t surprised to see that the screen was smashed but the whole thing was dead and any chances he might have had of finding a slight signal where he was so that he could call for help quickly disappeared. Digging through the rubble wasn’t an option given that no matter how careful he was every time he got close to clearing a path it just triggered another cave in so there was only one thing for it, he was going to have to find another way out. The bleeding had at least slowed for the time being and Antonio was able to start trying different tunnels. He felt weak and his vision kept going blurry but he knew that he had to get home. His girls needed him, he was the only parent they had left, and there were so many things that he’d never said to Ethan because he was scared of what it would mean so he knew that he needed to get back to where he belonged. The thought of the three of them was enough to give him the strength to keep going and he finally found a tunnel that started leading him towards the surface and he felt his heart skip a beat as he saw daylight ahead. It had been almost dark by the time they had found the boy so in the back of his mind he knew that he had to have been down there for a while but he wasn’t worried about that, he just had to get home. Wandering through the woods, Antonio eventually made it to a road and he followed it, hoping that it was taking him in the direction of Mystic Falls. It seemed to take a lifetime but finally he reached the town and he headed in the direction of the home that he and the girls had called theirs ever since they had arrived in town. It was pure desire to see the people he loved that kept him going and given the early hour he didn’t see anyone on his way home. He could have gone to the firehouse or knocked on just about any door and asked for help but he knew that too many questions would be asked if he did that so he had to get home and tend to his wounds before anyone else saw him. His legs were shaking by the time he made his way up the steps onto the porch and he could feel his strength beginning to leave him so he didn’t even bother fumbling in his gear for his keys. He knew that they wouldn’t be there anyway so instead he banged on the door as loudly as he could before collapsing against the side of the house, hoping that someone had heard him. ETHAN ALVAREZ

━ save your advice, 'cause i won't hear it ━ EVERYTHING was going by in an absolute blur. Coming home with her headphones in, singing loudly and purposely offkey to annoy Gabriela. It was fine then, like any other day. Adelina was just a sixteen year old with a foot long sandwich in hand, coming home to a family who loved her. Just like every day. Nothing was supposed to change, or had to. Or needed to. They were all happy, even more so with Ethan around. He lit up Adelina's father in a way she hadn't ever seen before, though the two men were more oblivious than anyone else in the entire damn world. They'd see it someday, because they had the time and the patience, and the support. Yet things did change, this wasn't any other day. For starters, she didn't finish her sandwich, and Adelina always finished her sandwiches. But coming into the living room, finding Gabriela in tears, and Ethan’s heartbroken expression... It made her stomach flip, her mouth dry. It wasn't a normal day, because her father hadn't come home, like he always did.
That's when things started going by in a blur, when she heard the news, then practically dropped the sandwich to the coffee table to grab hold of her sister. Gabriela was softer than she was, gentler and warmer, yet seeing her break over anything at all was the worst sight Adelina could possibly imagine. Putting atop that the absence of their father, and all she wanted to do now was hug her twin, and not let go. Painted fingernails dug into Ethan's shirt, holding him near them, though most of her energy went into squeezing Gabriela to her. She hated this, she never wanted to feel like devastating weight on her chest that was growing and growing and... It wouldn't stop growing.
Adelina wasn't certain how much time went by, if it was light or dark out. She was barely sure of what was right in front of her, eyes too blurred by unshed tears. For what felt like hours, she had been sat on the couch, curled up against Gabriela. The weight on her chest was still there, breaking her down, filling her veins with led. Were they orphans now? Of course, Ethan would stay, but was this what being absolutely parentless felt like?
It could've been centuries later for all Adelina knew, when the bang came. Time didn't exist when consumed by immediate, unexpected grief. It felt like her eyes had been crusted together by tears, swollen enough that she had to rub at them before managing to get them open. An arm was still around Gabriela, her body sunken back into the soft couch cushions as her vision tried to readjust to the tone of the room. "Ethan," she mumbled, voice hoarse, as it had been the first time she had really spoken since the out of tune singing. "I think somebody's at the door." She didn't want to get up, or to move, ever again. The adult, the only one they had left now, could answer it, and she could stay planted here, against her sister.

━ you're perfection; my only direction. it's fire on fire ━ Ethan's heart broke for the girls. Their mother was out of the picture and their lives and they were lucky enough to have never known her or else the loss would have hurt a lot more. Their dad was the only parent they had in their lives but now... Now he was gone, too. Ethan didn't know what to do. How to console them. He didn't know what he could possibly say that would make things okay. That would make it all hurt less. He wasn't sure there could ever be something that would make it hurt less. But, Gabriela had her sister by her now. He knew how much Ela had wanted Eli by her side after hearing the news. Now, they weren't letting go of each other and he understood. He understood why. But Ethan didn't want to believe that he was gone for good. He was going to go back there and he was going to dig through if he needs to. He wasn't going to stop here or accept this. He needs to do this.
Ethan made his way upstairs, passing by Antonio's room before he stopped and looked at it, his heart feeling so unbelievably heavy in his chest. Ethan entered his room and sat down on the edge of his bed. "I don't know what I'm supposed to do..." Ethan whispered as he ran his hand down his face. All of this felt like a nightmare to him. One he couldn't wake up from. "I had so much I wanted to tell you but I kept telling myself to wait... I shouldn't have waited. Fuck... I shouldn't have waited." Ethan breathed out, his regrets crushing him down. He pushed himself up slowly from Antonio's bed and made his way downstairs to check on the girls, needing to keep an eye on them just to make sure they are okay. Ethan busied himself with cleaning up, just finding a way to keep his hands and mind busy until he heard a banging noise on the door. Adelina's voice followed as he stepped out of the kitchen, his eyes on the door. "Yeah... It's okay, I'll see who it is." He nodded his head and placed the towel he was using to drying his hands with on the table and headed over to the door. He reached for the door handle and upon opening the door, he didn't exactly see anyone at first. "Great..." His eyes settled on something that he spotted in his peripheral vision and his eyes widened when he noticed who it was. "Antonio?!" Ethan's shock was clear in his voice.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. I've got you." Ethan rushed to him as he wrapped his arm around his middle to hoist him up. "Girls?!" Ethan called out as he carefully helped Antonio enter the house. "D-Daddy?" Gabriela whispered, her voice still shaking but it was also raspy from the amount of times she had sobbed. She slowly released her sister from her hold and stood up on shaking legs. "Grab some wet towels, please. There's also first-aid in my room for work, bring me those, too. I need to make sure he's not hurt anywhere." Ethan could spot the blood staining his clothes which rang alarm bells for him. "Toni? Toni, hey man, don't fall asleep, 'kay? We both know how this goes, c'mon, man. Stay awake for me."

Being a firefighter meant putting your life on the line day after day, that was something that Antonio had known before he had even realised that he wanted to become one. Before the girls were born it wasn’t too bad because he hadn’t had to worry about anyone else but now he had two girls who depended on him and they made him even more determined than ever to make it home after each and every shift. They weren’t babies any longer, they were teenagers and they didn’t need him as much as they once had but the fact that he was their dad was never going to change and he had made a promise to himself the day their mother had left them on his doorstep that he would always be there for them. His relationship with his own parents was a little distant, he didn’t see them that often and when he did they were often quite strict given that they had long ago accepted the fact that he wasn’t like the children they’d lost in the past and could take care of himself. They always seemed to think that they knew what was best and Antonio had given up listening to them a long time ago. He knew how to live his life and do right by his girls regardless of what they or anyone else might think so the truth was that the only people he truly needed in his life right now were the girls and Ethan. It would have been easy for Antonio to stop fighting and give in to the darkness that had been threatening to consume him but he had so much to fight for and he knew that he couldn’t let any of them down. There was still so much that he hadn’t said to the girls and Ethan, so much that he had always thought that he could get the chance to say to them later, but that chance had almost been taken from him and he knew that he wasn’t going to stop fighting to get back to them. He had spent so long believing that his parents were right, that he had to find a woman to settle down and be happy with, but the truth was that he had already found the person that made him happy and that was Ethan. The girls had both seen it and Ela had even tried to tell him as much but he hadn’t been ready to listen then. Now, however, he was because he knew that life truly was too short even for them. He had three people that he needed to get back home to and nothing was going to stop him from doing that. The drive from town had taken a while before they even got there so the walk back into town took what felt like hours but finally Antonio was standing on the porch to the home that he shared with the girls and Ethan and it was only when he got there that the adrenaline finally started to wear off. He was home and he knew that he needed to hang in there a little longer but he could already feel his strength starting to leave him as he waited for the door to open and he slumped against the side of the house, needing the support even as his eyes drifted shut. The darkness threatened to overtake him once more but finally a voice broke through the silence and Antonio felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “Ethan,” he breathed, not sure in that moment whether Ethan was really there or whether this was all just a dream. Feeling Ethan’s arm around his middle, Antonio forced his eyes open and he took in Ethan for the first time. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he quipped, unable to stop himself as Ethan helped him into the house. Looking up at the sound of another voice, Antonio’s smile returned. “Hey baby,” he said, his heart aching at the sight of the tear tracks that were still visible on her face. It didn’t register yet just what the three of them had all gone through but it would be sure to sink in later. Soon enough he was lying on the sofa and his eyes drifted closed of their own accord once more but Ethan’s voice brought him out of it. “I’m awake,” he said, ignoring how exhausted he felt as he forced his eyes open. He knew that Ethan was right, if he closed his eyes there was a chance that he might never open them again. Dragons weren’t easy to kill but his body had been pushed to its limits and then some so he knew better than to tempt fate. He had fought this hard to get back to his family and he knew that he couldn’t afford to fall at the final hurdle now. ETHAN ALVAREZ, GABRIELA ALVAREZ & ADELINA ALVAREZ

━ you're perfection; my only direction. it's fire on fire ━ All of this felt like a dream to him right now. But it also felt like it was a good dream compared to the one where he'd have to come into terms with the fact that Antonio might be dead. He didn't want to consider that even for a second. He didn't want to believe that he was gone, so he knew that as soon as the sun comes up, he'd run back there and he'd look for him. But the fact that Antonio was wounded didn't exactly make things look brighter for Ethan. He might've bled out by now but he was still not going to stop or give up. He was going to make sure he comes back home to his daughters because they need him more than anyone else. He was everything to them.
Ethan was pretty sure he'd lost his touch with time. It really didn't matter to him what time it was because it wasn't going to change anything. But then he heard the pounding on the door and he told Eli that he was going to get it. But his surprise was something he'd never experienced before. His eyes widened when he saw that it was Antonio. He had survived and made it back to them. His determination was truly admirable. It really was.
Ethan helped him inside the house and chuckled at his words. "I'm just really happy to see you. You're one hell of a fighter, man." Ethan said in a gentle voice as he helped him sit down on the couch before he laid him down so he could take a look at his wounds. Ethan knew what to do, it came with the job but it still concerned him because he had lost blood. "That's it, yeah. Keep your eyes open. Uhm, Eli, can you talk to him for a bit, please? Make sure he doesn't fall asleep." Ethan's eyes settled on Adelina momentarily, offering her a smile that he hoped was reassuring and gentle. He carefully pushed up his shirt so he could take a look at his wound, grimacing when he saw just how deep that wound was. "We'll need to stitch this one up... It's gonna hurt, Toni. I'm sorry." Ethan's blue eyes drifted up to look at Antonio momentarily before he quickly opened the first aid kit to start working on cleaning the wound thoroughly at first, knowing that this wasn't the only one he had. The back of his head looked bloody too, so he must've hit his head hard. Knowing that he shouldn't waste any time, Ethan started working on the deep wound first, stitching it closed, not wanting to risk him losing more blood or else it would all turn so messy for them.
Ethan worked on his injuries next, cleaning them up and bandaging them after making sure they weren't deep enough to need another stitch. Ethan got up from where he was sitting on his knees and moved to gently lift Antonio's head up. "Sorry, I need to get this one, too. Still with us, Toni?" Ethan asked as he gently started cleaning the wound, his heart clenching whenever he caught glimpse of the blood. "We might need to get you to a hospital, Toni. You lost a lot of blood. I did what I could but... yeah, you might need actual professional help."

━ save your advice, 'cause i won't hear it ━ SEEING her father being helped inside by Ethan felt surreal. Adelina couldn't possibly be seeing this, not after the night they had. It was too devastating, feeling the grief and loss, the loneliness that came with the absence of Antonio. And now it simply felt like a mirage, as if she had spent too long in some far away dessert. Trapped, hallucinating the only person she would ever want to see right now. But then he was coming closer, aided greatly by Ethan, but actually there. Adelina was standing up before she realized it, stepping back to give them room. She wasn't sure what to say or do, damp eyes wide as she watched her father lay down, as she saw the amount of blood on him. It was so much, soaked into her father's shirt, staining his skin. She almost wanted to tell Gabriela not to look, to shield her eyes like some type of toddler, though the words felt lodged in her throat. She couldn't speak, full lips slightly parted as if she had tried to, but whatever she wanted to say, was lost immediately to her shock.
Luckily, Ethan seemed to know what he was doing. It was probably training from the job he shared with her dad, but it still made her appreciate Ethan more than she had ever before. He was the perfect addition to this family, someone who was quickly embraced, and time and time again proved to be an incredible person. Adelina, though not usually emotional, tried to mentally leave a reminder to herself to give him a hug later, when things were okay again.
'...Uhm, Eli, can you talk to him for a bit, please? Make sure he doesn't fall asleep.'
Just like that, Adelina snapped out of her haze, nodding quickly at Ethan. "On it," and she was, moving to kneel on the floor beside her father's head, lightly putting her hand against his shoulder. He couldn't fall asleep, he wouldn't. "Hey, dad, hey," her voice was soft, gentler than ever, as nothing about Adelina was often ever soft or gentle. Being closer meant she saw more blood on her father's head, and she tried not to squirm, attempting to keep her eyes fixed on her dad's. "C'mon, eyes open. Remember when I tried to nap during a parent-teacher meeting you dragged me to? Bad timing for sleep apparently, just like right now. I'm gonna need you around to make those enchiladas, too, so falling into a coma is definitely not allowed." She kept talking, doing the best she could with whatever came to mind as Ethan handled the wounds. By no means would she stop until her father was out of the woods, or Ethan at least had more control over her father staying awake. She had to help in any way she could.
Once Ethan had to move to head wound, she stood, pulling back to give him space to work. The head wound didn't look good, there was more blood than Adelina would ever like to see in her lifetime, especially coming out of a loved one. When Ethan mentioned a hospital, she tensed, folding her arms tightly over her chest. It wasn't that she disliked hospitals, she just didn't like the risk that could come with them. No one in this room was human, after all. But if her dad needed it, then they'd have to go, and she'd help with that, too. "Take him, Ethan." She nearly blurted, worry making the words come out in a quick burst, as if she had been holding her breath until she had to speak.

The fact that he was home still felt like a dream to Antonio, like any moment he was going to wake up and find that he was still trapped in the cave after all. He still wasn’t sure what the creature that had attacked them in the cave was but he’d fought the creature off in order to buy some time for Ethan to get the boy out of there and he had ended up getting hurt so he had only ended up slowing them down. A split second decision had seen him pushing Ethan and the boy out of the way just before the roof collapsed but it wasn’t something that he regretted. He had needed to make sure that the boy got out safely and if he was honest he hadn’t liked the thought of anything happening to Ethan either. Things were different now, Antonio knew that Ethan was a phoenix and that he had already come back to life twice but he didn’t know if that would keep happening or whether he only had a certain amount of lives. He had never liked the thought of anything happening to Ethan anyway so he had reacted on instinct and ever since then he had been fighting to get home to the people he loved. He knew that he could have given up back in the cave and he would be lying if he said that the thought hadn’t crossed his mind but he had known that he had far too much to live for. He had two amazing girls that needed him and he had whatever was going on between him and Ethan as well. Antonio would be lying if he said that what Ela had told him hadn’t been on his mind a lot lately but now he knew what he wanted and it had taken almost dying to make him figure that out. “I have a lot to keep fighting for,” Antonio said sincerely as Ethan helped him into the living room. It wasn’t long before he was on the sofa and he did his best to do as Ethan had asked and keep his eyes open but they were starting to feel heavier with each passing minute now that the adrenaline and determination to get home were starting to wear off. Eli was there, though, her hand on his shoulder as she kept talking to him and that was enough to keep Antonio awake and alert, a laugh escaping him despite the pain as she mentioned the time she had tried to take a nap during a parent-teacher conference. “You always did like to fall asleep at the worst times even when you were a little girl,” he said, a smile touching his lips at the thought. So much had changed since then but one thing that hadn’t changed was the fact that he would be lost without the girls. It had been difficult looking after both of them at first but they were his world and nothing was going to change that. As Ethan said that he needed to stitch up the first wound and that it was going to hurt a lot, Antonio shook his head. “It’s fine, just do it,” he said, reaching for Eli’s free hand and taking it in one of his even as he gritted his teeth through the pain as Ethan set to work cleaning the wound and stitching it up. Eli kept talking to him and Antonio was able to focus on her rather than on what Ethan was doing from the most part so it really did help. He wasn’t sure how long it went on like that for but soon Ethan moved to check the wound to his head and Antonio nodded as Ethan asked if he was still with them. “Hanging in there. Looks like you had a good teacher,” he said, a small smile returning. Wincing as Ethan cleaned that wound as well, Antonio shook his head as Ethan said that he might need to get him to a hospital and Eli seemed to agree to him. “No hospitals. I’ll start healing soon and I won’t be able to explain that to anyone there,” he explained. He knew that there were plenty of people in town who were supernatural but he couldn’t draw too much attention to himself his family’s safety depended on it. “I’ll be fine in a couple of days. You’ve done a great job, thank you.”ETHAN ALVAREZ & ADELINA ALVAREZ
