Scott's sophomore year was under way and it seemed set to be just as eventful as every other year that he had spent in Mystic Falls so far. During his junior year Allison was possessed by a demon and Riley, Tatia and Grace were killed during Klaus' ritual to free his werewolf side, during his senior year he was attacked by some of Klaus' werewolves and would have died if not for Bonnie while last year Hayden had almost died because her name had ended up on some kind of supernatural hit list. There always seemed to be something going on in town but that was something that Scott had grown used to. Before he and his friends moved to Mystic Falls the only place he had ever lived was in Beacon Hills but the truth was that Virginia truly felt like home to him now. They had managed to start over in the town and it seemed to be working well for all of them. He had been reunited with Bonnie years after the two of them first met and things seemed to be falling into place for the others as well. Stiles and Lydia finally seemed to be getting their acts together and the same was true of Liam and Hayden as well. Even Erica had found her way back to them from the Other Side and she was determined to find Boyd and bring him home too. Scott knew that they could easily ask Henrik for a favour but Erica seemed to want to do things her own way and Scott respected her decision so that would only happen as a last resort. Things were different now but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Hayden, Derek and others around Mystic Falls were being experimented on but they weren't the only ones, people from all over the country were showing up in Mystic Falls. Scott's bite had managed to save Hayden and trigger the healing process and after talking to Derek he hoped that the same might work for him. It was risky but his bite had managed to change even the nogitsune and Scott knew just how much Derek wanted to be a werewolf again so it had to be worth a shot. That was what had caused Scott to head to Derek's that day, he needed to make sure that this was truly what his brother wanted and if he was ready to give it a shot so after taking a deep breath he knocked on the door and waited for Derek to appear. They were still no closer to the truth, or a way to at least put what had happened in the past.
Hopping lightly off of the ground, Derek hauled himself up on the bar he’d installed across the top of his bedroom doorframe. Not that different to his childhood home, to the converted warehouse that had become home for a time before even that had been razed to the ground in a way in Beacon Hills. A second new start, an attempt to adjust to what he was at least.
It was hard when those reminders were staring you in the face or burning in your muscles every time you looked around though. This had been easy then, werewolf strength leaving him only prickled with a mild sweet after he’d spent an hour working out. Now five chin-ups in and sweat was already pouring down his spine, sticking his t-shirt to his spine as he hauled himself up. Muscles burned in that still unfamiliar way, his shoulder joints nearly protesting at it all. It was pathetic but at least he had no witnesses to it now. Erica and Cora were both out of the apartment, leaving him to torture himself for what he didn’t have right now.
Pale green eyes flicked to the thick glass panels in the door of the bedroom he’d taken as his own. They reflected his own face back at him at least. Not those he’d tried on, those of the people startled or hurt by his attempts to come to terms with what the Dread Doctors had done to him. The same man on the surface but so different between. Derek closed his eyes for a moment, hauled himself up again, and again, and again. By the time he dropped lightly to the floor the muscles in his upper arms were twitching, almost desperate for him to shift, to give them a release. It wasn’t going to happen.
He grabbed the towel from the end of the bed, dragged it over his face. It scratched over the stubble on his jaw, stuck to the back of his neck as he wrapped it around his shoulders. Mouth dry, eyes flicking to the large windows that would give him a ring side seat to the full moon when it rose tomorrow. His bones wouldn’t snap in that agonising, achingly familiar way they had for years before those things had taken him but some part of him would still ache with the hope that this wasn’t permanent.
Derek started as the knock came at the door. His muscles twitched again, his heart leaping jack rabbit fast into his throat. He looked around for a weapon, came up empty. He stifled a curse, padded over to the door quietly on bare foot. The security hole on it had felt like a ludicrous addition when the real estate agent had pointed it out but he looked through it now, spotting Scott on the other side. If he did have a hope of getting back to who he was then Scott was it. Always had been it.
Swallowing hard, Derek threw the lock on the door and pushed it open. He reached up, a hand on either end of the towel still hanging around his neck. His knuckles whitened as he gripped it, sea glass eyes rising to meet Scott’s. ”Hey. At least you didn’t pull a Stiles and break in to check on me,” he joked, the humour in his voice dark as he turned and led the way back into the apartment. ”I’m guessing that’s what this is? You checking up on me? I’m OK, really.” And wasn’t that a thinly veiled lie. OK was a relative term and right now his own version of it was sliding pretty low down the scale and they all knew it.

Before he was bitten, Scott hadn’t known a thing about the supernatural world. He had seen movies, sure, but he had never believed that any of it was actually real. It wasn’t meant to be real, vampires and werewolves were meant to belong in movies and stories but now he knew better and it had taken him some time to get his head around that to say the least. He hadn’t been born into this world the same way that Derek, Malia or Kira had been, he was bitten by Peter and thrown into it headfirst. Had it not been for Derek’s help then Scott knew that he never would have made it this far, the guy could have easily left him to figure it all out on his own and Scott wouldn’t have blamed him if he had done but instead he had gone out of his way to help. That was something that Scott hadn’t expected and if he was honest it wasn’t something that he was sure he would ever be able to repay. Derek had helped him not only navigate the supernatural world, he had also helped him on his way to becoming a True Alpha. There were still times when Scott was sure that a mistake must have been made somewhere along the line but he had managed to find his feet as the leader of his pack and that pack had grown in size since they had all moved to Mystic Falls. Letting new people get close to him like that wasn’t something that Scott was always very good at and he knew that his friends were often wary of newcomers but with Liam and Hayden he hadn’t had a choice but to bite them and it was the same with Robin and Keeley. No matter what had happened he had known that he couldn’t abandon them after that others like Derek, Cora and Erica had been a natural fit. Scott wasn’t used to having so many people in the pack that he could count on or as many friends outside of it that he could call on and he knew better than to take them for granted. Derek had been struggling a lot lately, that was something that Scott had seen for himself time and time again, and the guy had asked him to see if the bite would work but Scott had been reluctant. Derek had become a brother to him and Scott wasn’t sure what he would do if it didn’t work but he knew that he owed it to try. He had been thinking about it a lot ever since Derek had suggested it, unlike Scott he was a born werewolf so it was a big part of who he was. Scott knew what it was like to have that change overnight, after all it had happened to him the night that he was bitten, but Derek didn’t deserve any of this, none of the Dread Doctors’ experiments did. He had already managed to help one of them and if it was still what Derek wanted then Scott knew that it was about time he tried to help another. It wasn’t long before the door opened and Scott felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “That’s not my style and besides, I hate it when he does that to me,” he admitted as he followed Derek into the apartment and closed the door behind him. “That’s partly why I’m here, the other reason is that I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said. Do you really think the Bite might make you a werewolf again?” he asked, needing to hear those words from Derek first. DEREK HALE

It was easier not to think about what had happened when he kept himself busy. Handling stuff around the apartment, trying to dig into what was going on in town to get some clue about what the things who’d done this to him were doing now, losing himself in people. Most of it didn’t come close to a healthy coping mechanism but he was a Hale and for them it seemed as though those things didn’t exist. As far as he was from what he’d started out as he was still a Hale.
Derek had gritted his teeth, putting himself through a rigorous workout before the doorbell had wrung. Muscles burning in a way they’d never done, sweat pasting his t-shirt to his back, breath hissing between his teeth as he pushed and pushed. Anything to occupy his thoughts and shove that hope that this was gonna change soon back behind the cracked shields he was still holding up as fiercely as he could.
Those shields quivered along with his muscles as he began to cool down. Fingers tight in the cotton of the towel he’d been dragging over his face, knuckles turning white as the knock came at the door. Wariness had him damning himself for not having something close to hand to protect himself. Once upon a time he wouldn’t have needed it but thanks to the Dread Doctors that time was long gone. Derek felt the anxiety knot his gut tight and could only let it out on a breath of relief as he peered through the security peep hole on the door, something else that hadn’t been necessary once upon a time. Scott, likely here on some mission to make sure that he wasn’t getting himself in over his head trying to figure this out, or in another way. Stiles’ wouldn’t have been able to keep his mouth shut about his little break in, even under the threat of death.
Questioning the fact that Scott had actually bothered to visit the conventional way Derek stepped out of the way and let Scott in. If it had been Stiles he wouldn’t have opened the door in the first place. ”Didn’t you used to go climbing in Allison’s bedroom window?” he asked, winging a brow even as a brief smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. ”Stiles needs to stop making it his style unless he wants curiosity to finally kill the cat.” His own threats had been half hollow but there were people in this town who wouldn’t hesitate to make them all truth. Those were the things they needed to avoid, at least until he had some semblance of his former self back. With the message out to Braeden maybe that would happen sooner rather than later.
Padding into the kitchen on bare feet, Derek headed for the fridge. He opened it, shoulders hunching slightly as Scott admitted this was a welfare check. He wouldn’t denied he needed it but Scott’s nose would tell him different, there was no hiding his scent anymore. Retrieving a bottle of water, Derek swallowed hard, he offered one up to Scott before he closed the fridge and sagged back against the counter with the cold bottle clutched in his hand. ”It worked for Hayden didn’t it? If it can work on her and she’d been twisted into something else by those things … it’s gotta work on me too.” Hayden was younger than him though, still had that benefit of youth on her side. He wasn’t much more than a handful of years older but they’d been a hard handful of years and there was never a guarantee, especially with whatever the Dread Doctors had done still controlling his body, letting him control his body in a way he didn’t want to be able to.

Scott had been thinking about it a lot lately and the truth was that he was tired of the way that the Dread Doctors seemed to be getting away with messing up the lives of so many people. The book that Dec and Care had found about them had given them quite a bit of information about what they were doing but it didn’t tell them anything about who those people were and between them and the hit list that still seemed to be circulating there were far too many people who were in danger at the moment. Scott knew how much Derek hated what the Dread Doctors had turned him into, he was born a werewolf and it was something that had always been a part of him but they had taken that away from him and Scott knew that he wanted nothing more than to help the guy that had become a brother to him if he could. Derek had taken him under his wing when he was first bitten by Peter when he could have quite easily turned his back on him. They didn’t always see eye to eye but when it mattered they always came through for each other and had each other’s backs and Scott knew that he couldn’t ask for anything more than that. Derek had saved him more times than he cared to admit and Scott had done his best to help the guy out in return but now they had been looking for another way out of this for Derek for a couple of years and nothing else seemed to work so no matter how worried he might be about the bite not taking and killing Derek instead he knew that if it was what Derek wanted then it was worth a try. It had worked for Hayden, the bite had turned her into a true werewolf after the Dread Doctors had turned her into a chimera and it had worked on the nogitsune as well so Scott knew that it could do incredible things but it wasn’t without its risks. For a while Scott hadn’t wanted to risk it but now he had realised that after everything that they had been through it wasn’t his decision to make, it was Derek’s and Scott knew that he couldn’t take that away from him. As Derek asked about him climbing in through Allison’s bedroom window in the past, Scott rolled his eyes. “That was different, her dad hated me back then,” he corrected. For a while it was the only way that they had been able to see each other so he didn’t regret it one bit but if there had been another way then he knew that he would have taken it. “He only does it because he cares but I have told him not to break in here again,” Scott offered. Whether his friend would take that advice or not remained to be seen. Stiles was always a force to be reckoned with and when he thought that one of their friends was in danger there really wasn’t anything that the guy wouldn’t do for them but Scott had tried to talk him out of breaking into Derek’s place again and he hoped that Stiles would listen. There was a time when Derek had threatened the boy a lot but he had never followed through with any of those threats and Scott was pretty sure that he never would but he still didn’t like the idea of Stiles pushing Derek too far. Following Derek into the apartment, Scott watched his friend for a moment before nodding as Derek asked about it working on Hayden. “It did,” he confirmed. “She was dying so I didn’t think it would work but she kept fighting.” Liam had begged him to give it a try because Hayden had been slipping away anyway but the bite had taken and she seemed so much better for it now. “You’re more of a fighter than just about anyone else I know so if you’re sure this is what you want, I’ll do it.”DEREK HALE

It had come down to it. Every time they’d tried to find some other way out of the twisted maze the Dread Doctors had left him in they’d hit a dead end. Close to two years since someone had snatched him from there, months that were still a vacuum in his memory, a walled up centre to that maze that Derek was sure he could almost see in the back of his mind but no amount of proverbial fist thumping breaking those walls down. Over a year of following every possible path he could see through that maze, hope rising as they would turn a new corner, as it looked like maybe they had another clue, that crushing weight of failure slamming down out of the sky when those hopes were torn apart. Standing outside that walled up centre now with no other avenue left, Scott seemed to be his only hope.
Derek felt that weight in the pit of his stomach as he’d opened up the door to Scott, fingers knotting in the towel he’d been drying off with as it settled in increments. Not shredding it like he might’ve done when half turning had been the answer to almost everything. He let it hang from one hand, the cords of muscle in his forearm standing out as he gripped it tight. His other brow rose, amusement pulling tighter on a mouth that felt even more rusty at it than he had been when he’d first found Scott and Stiles stalking around in the woods. ”And you don’t think I hate him?” he asked lightly. A kernel of truth to that. Stiles was irritating at a master level, had no idea of personal boundaries or gave a damn about whether or not he was breaking the law. A shake of his head but he knew Scott was telling the truth without the ability to sniff it out in an instant again. ”You think he’d ever actually listen?” About as much chance of that as there was that he’d magically wake up tomorrow morning and be a wolf again. Stiles was who he was and not even the Dread Doctors were going to change it.
Sea glass eyes ticked to the bed in the screened off corner of the apartment, the one he slept alone in these days. It wasn’t like there was anybody for Stiles to break in and find now, not unless he got into Cora’s room and then anything that happened was on Stiles … and probably on his dad’s medical insurance. Probably still less painful that the hope that whatever had saved Hayden’s life would do the same for him.
Sinking back against the counter, Derek mutely flexed his fingers around the ice cold bottle as Scott nodded. Hayden was a decade younger than him, not a guarantee that the bite would work on her, it hadn’t on Paige, but still, a little more weight on the side of the bite taking for her. He wasn’t dying, an ounce on his. As Scott called him a fighter Derek huffed out a breath, hung his head slightly. Had been a fighter. Maybe some part of him had given him up on the idea of this when there’d been nothing but failed hopes tossed back at him. ”I don’t wanna be this anymore,” he admitted to Scott, a gruff veneer of honesty to his voice. Lifting his head, he pressed the bottle against his bare stomach and allowed his features to shift slightly, taking on those paler eyes and the slightly longer face of the guy he’d seen in the bar again, the supposedly dead brother of the vampire cop. Derek swallowed, his head hanging again as he let his features slip back with just a hitched exhalation. ”If we’re doing this … when? There’s still trouble in Mystic Falls … if I can do anything about it…” Then he wanted to. For too long he’d been like Stlies, almost human fragile and left sitting on the side lines while everybody else tried to protect him, instead of the other way around.

Within a pack there was strength in numbers, Scott knew that, and he understood why Derek had bitten Isaac, Erica and Boyd to form a pack of his own but the truth was that Scott had never wanted to be like that. Derek had given them a choice which was more than Peter had done for him but Scott had struggled a lot over the last few years and even though he honestly felt like he had become the person that he was meant to be now he had made a lot of mistakes along the way. It had taken him a while to win Chris Argent over and convince the guy that he was different and had it not been for Allison going into bat for him with her family then Scott knew that he wouldn’t have lasted this long. He’d had people there to help him and even though he had never wanted to be responsible for any new werewolves, when it came to Liam and Hayden it had been either bite them and give them a fighting chance or the two of them would have died. Scott had been doing his best to help them ever since the bite took and even though becoming a werewolf wasn’t ideal for either of them he knew that it was much better than the alternative. That was the kind of person that Scott wanted to be, he wanted to be the kind of person who helped others and even though Derek rarely said the words out loud Scott knew just how much his friend was struggling. Derek had been there to help him after he was bitten, he had taught Scott as much as he could and the Alpha was always going to be grateful to him for that, and he knew that now it was finally time for him to return the favour. “I think if you really hated him you would have done more to keep him away,” Scott teased. He knew that Stiles had his own way of dealing with things, when it came to the people he cared about there wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t do to protect them and that was something that Scott knew the three of them had in common. Stiles had a habit of rubbing Derek up the wrong way but they always came through for each other when they needed it and that was as it should be. As Derek asked if Stiles would actually listen, Scott shrugged. “Probably not but it never hurts to try,” he offered. He doubted that it would actually work but it would be worth a shot at least. It had been a while since Derek had first suggested the bite as a solution to his shapeshifting problem and Scott had resisted at first given that the only people he’d bitten before had been dying so he hadn’t had a choice but he had been thinking about it a lot lately. Derek wasn’t like him, he was born a werewolf and that had been taken away from him. Scott couldn’t even begin to imagine what that must be like for him and he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t worried about losing his friend but he knew that it couldn’t be his decision, it had to be Derek’s and whatever happened he knew that they would find a way to deal with it the same way they always did. “I know,” he assured him as Derek said that he didn’t want to be this anymore. “This isn’t who you are and that’s what made me realise that this has to be your decision. I can’t say no just because I’m worried about losing my friend, I don’t have the right,” he explained, needing Derek to understand why he’d changed his mind. He had been adamant before that there was no way he could go through with it but it wasn’t his life and that was what had gotten through to him in the end. The way Derek’s features shifted still surprised him but it wasn’t long before they shifted back and then Derek was asking when they were going to do this. “You’ll be able to help, you always do,” he nodded. “As for when, that depends on you. You tell me.”DEREK HALE

The threat to kill Stiles had been there on the tip of his tongue ever since Scott and Stiles had started poking around in what had happened to Laura. Stiles had never met a line he didn’t want to charge straight across. He didn’t listen, or rather didn’t wanna hear. The fact that he’d also come through for him more times than he could count was a bone stuck in Derek’s throat. No matter what had happened, or what his family … he had done, they’d still been there. A pack with a true Alpha, forgiving, ass saving, even if Stiles was the type to never let him forget it.
Derek made a low sound in his throat as he forced himself to loosen up his grip on the towel, tossing it over his shoulder instead. His dark brows rose, the amusement finally writing its way onto the granite lines of his face. Doing more to keep Stiles away probably would’ve requited chaining him up somewhere or prison like bars on the doors and windows. ”Shocking I know, but I thought maybe a locked door would do just that, my mistake.” On a mission, even if it was just one in his own head, Stiles would blast right through that. A kid with a smart brain, he’d been given too many teaching opportunities that would let him dance right over the law and through those locked doors. Derek huffed a breath out through his nose and shook his head. If the last threat, with his hands wrapped tight in Stiles’ hoody, half throttling him, hadn’t worked, he wasn’t sure what was going to.
Leaning back against the counter, the cold bite of the bottle against his palm Derek wondered how that had ended up their theme lately. Doubt about everything, especially the chances he’d ever end up like he had once been. The things that had taken him hadn’t left an easy path out of this, hell, they hadn’t found a path at all. They were still fumbling around the dark, hoping for just some sort of breadcrumb that would put them on their trail. Throat tight, Derek admitted he needed that way out, not raising his eyes to Scott until the words had been torn out of his throat. Then he let his face shift, someone else standing there, someone who had been snatched from his own family by Death but was somehow back.
Derek let out a ragged breath, his shoulders hunched as he looked down at the tile. Bare feet pale against it, his dark brows furrowed as he shook his head. The decision had been taken away from him the moment he’d been taken, him asking for this was him taking it back. It could fail, there was a chance, but maybe that would be better than being stuck like this. ”I wouldn’t have forced you to give me the bite but this … it’s looking like my only chance. I need it.” An escape from not knowing who he was gonna be looking at in the mirror – everybody but who he had been. Tilting his head, Derek held up his arm. He could’ve waited, could’ve talked to Cora, even to Peter, to make sure what he was doing was right this had been delayed long enough. ”Now? If this works, I don’t want to wait.” Sure, he could keep fighting as he was but every shift took a little something more out of him, carried him further away from who he’d been. The line was ever shifting, not giving him the chance to catch up and adjust. He was going to stop it one way or another.

Deep down Scott was pretty sure he had always known that it would come to this. It had been years since Derek was taken by the Dread Doctors and experimented on and during that time they still hadn’t found a way to change what had been done to him. Others around Mystic Falls had been taken and experimented on as well and there were others who had been taken from other places around the country and brought to Virginia. They had changed the lives of so many people and as far as Scott was concerned it definitely wasn’t for the better. The day he was bitten he had found himself thrown into a world that he hadn’t even known existed and it was the same for everyone that the Dread Doctors experimented on. Scott had been fortunate enough to realise that the person he was now was who he was meant to be and he’d gained more family than he had ever thought that he would end up finding in his life but he knew that he wasn’t that way for everyone. It was easy to feel alone after being thrown into that world but Scott was doing his best to help those that he knew about and he knew that he couldn’t do anything more than that. He had bitten Hayden when he had realised that her healing wasn’t kicking in and he had been helping Jasper as much as he could as well. Derek had always been a different story, he liked to try and figure things out on his own and always had done but he would always be family as far as Scott was concerned and he had known that he’d had to make the offer now before he talked himself out of it completely. “I hate to break it to you but a locked door has never stopped Stiles,” Scott chuckled. He knew his best friend, the guy was one of the most determined people he had ever known and there was no way that he was going to let something as simple as a locked door stop him from doing what he wanted to do. Scott’s eyes were fixed on Derek as he looked at the floor, he could see that his friend didn’t want him to see that his face had shifted and Scott’s heart really did go out to him. Scott had struggled when he was first bitten but Derek had been there for him even though he hadn’t had any reason to be. It wasn’t easy going from being one way your whole life to being turned into something else and Scott wanted better than that for Derek. “I know you wouldn’t have forced me and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about the bite not taking but this has to be your decision. It’s the least I can do after everything you’ve done for me,” he admitted. Derek had been there for him through everything and Scott knew that there was no way that he would have made it this far without him. Watching as Derek held up his arm, Scott nodded as he said that he wanted to do it now if that worked. “No time like the present then,” he nodded, ignoring the pain as he half shifted before taking hold of Derek’s arm and biting it. “I guess now all we can do is wait,” he said, letting go of Derek’s arm as he shifted back. They were relentless, not just Stiles, although he was the worst, but all of them. Wisdom and a sense of self-preservation would’ve had Scott trying to high tail it away from Beacon Hills after he’d been bitten and the world had started to twist but he hadn’t. With Stiles as the worst sidekick in the history of them, they’d pushed and dug until he had no choice but to let them in. Derek knew he needed to now, threats against Stiles’ continued ability to breath notwithstanding. He hadn’t found a single trace of the things that had done this to him and changed as he was by this he was fumbling around in the dark without them. That fire inside of him dulled by the change, hands flailing, no claws to cling on anymore, that one part of him he’d always believed would endure taken.
Stiles was lucky it might’ve been, claws made short work of flannel and skin alike. Derek sucked in a breath, let it out slowly as he let his hands fall away from the towel. Green eyes flicking to the door he’d let Scott in through. ”I’ve noticed. I doubt a warning will either but one day this is gonna come back to bite him on the ass, you know.” No question to it. The longer you played with fire the higher chance there was it was going to come back to burn you. They were all proof of that, scorched fingers the least of the damage left by it.
Scars were supposed to heal, become less visible, but the ones the Docs had carved into his mind, the changes they’d made to his body, they weren’t healing. He’d seen them in Alix, in her reluctance to open up to him until he’d forced her to peel them all open. Flayed hearts and minds revealing all that had cut deep. He’d added his own to hers, shredding what had been there as he’d been unable to move past the lies. Could he move past what had corrupted his own life? Looking up at Scott from under dark lashes he knew that any chance he had of it now lay with the young Alpha. ”I’d have been worried if you weren’t worried about it,” Derek said thickly. A huff of something that might’ve been humour grunted through him. The sound was tinged with a weakness he couldn’t stomach. ”It should be a payment game but … I’m glad I wracked up a debt if it helps talk you into this.” Any score that needed to be balanced for it later he’d handle, anything was better than this.
The arm he held up looked normal enough. His, roped with muscle and dusted with dark hair. The same body he’d looked at in the memory for more than two decades before he’d been changed. Shifting everything beneath the skin until he didn’t recognise it. Derek gritted his teeth as Scott half changed and bit into him. Blood rolled from the wound as Scott released. Derek slowly slid down the front of the counter, eyes latched onto the red blood that trickled from it. ”What’s plan B if this doesn’t work?” he asked hoarsely. There wasn’t one but desperation had him asking anyway. He could still remember the weight of Paige in his lap, black blood pouring from her, agony wracking her body as he desperately tried to wick it away.
Laying his head back against the counter Derek continued to watch. Blood drying on his skin, almost black but not quite. Healthy. Green eyes slipping shut as a sense of relief rolled in, his heart thudding low in his chest as he waited to feel something different. It felt like hours later when he finally caved and tried. Opening his eyes again, focusing on Scott as he tried to force the change on himself, to slip Scott’s appearance on as he had done dozens of others over the month. Nothing. Straining, feeling sweat slick his skin before in a rush he was half turning, fangs and claws piercing his skin for the first time in years. Eyes glowing yellow as the roar ripped out his throat on a wave of relief and triumph.

Scott knew that things hadn’t been easy for Derek over the last few years, he was born a werewolf and the Dread Doctors had taken that away from him and none of them could explain why. Scott had seen something similar happen with others, Hayden had been turned into a chimera, Matt had been turned into a kitsune and Amy, Dec and Caroline had all been turned into chimeras as well. That kind of thing wasn’t meant to be possible but at the end of the day Scott had already seen that things had changed since he had become a werewolf and now they seemed to be changing again. The laws of the supernatural were changing and all any of them could do was learn to adjust the best they could. Derek had been trying to get his shifting under control but every time Scott was around his friend he could see just how much he hated what he had become. Biting him was a last resort but it was what Derek wanted, it was what he had wanted for a while now, and Scott knew that he really didn’t have any right to say no. At the end of the day it was Derek’s life to live and Scott knew that he couldn’t decide how Derek did that. It had to be his decision and even the risk that the bite could kill him wasn’t something that Scott could use to try and change his mind if it was what Derek wanted. “I know that and I think Stiles does too but he’s the only one who can help himself this time,” Scott shrugged. He knew that it would take something drastic to get Stiles to stop but Scott also knew that they could all tell the guy that he shouldn’t be doing what he was doing until they were blue in the face and he would keep on doing it anyway. Stiles was one of the most stubborn people he had ever met and he knew that wasn’t going to change any time soon. As Derek said he would have been worried if Scott wasn’t worried about the bite not taking, Scott felt a half smile form on his face. “You’re not just my friend, you’re my brother so of course I’m worried,” he offered. He knew that it was true, Derek was his brother just as much as Stiles, Isaac, Liam and Danny were. Derek had been there to help him after he was bitten by Peter even though it wasn’t his problem and Scott knew that he wouldn’t have made it this far without him. “Even if I didn’t feel like I owed you I still would have agreed. I’ve seen how much you hate being a shapeshifter so if this is what you want then I can’t stand in your way,” he explained. He hadn’t wanted to go through with biting Derek and the truth was that he didn’t particularly want to now either but they had tried everything else and Scott knew that he had to help Derek in any way he could. Biting Derek’s arm, Scott watched the blood flowing from the wound. He could still remember the night he was bitten, he had never felt a pain like it before but in the morning the wound was gone. He had never wanted to bite anyone, he hadn’t intentionally wanted to build his pack the way that Derek had when he became an Alpha but with Liam he hadn’t had a choice and it was the same with Hayden. Both would have died otherwise and Scott knew that in a way Derek would too. He had lived as a shapeshifter for years and while some might have been able to accept it by now it wasn’t like that for Derek and he knew that he had to respect that. “This is plan B,” Scott said, really not sure what they would do if this didn’t work. This truly was the last resort as far as Scott was concerned and he wouldn’t be surprised if Derek knew it too. All Scott could do was wait nervously to see if the bite would take. He hoped the fact that Derek’s body wasn’t shutting down was a good sign but he got the impression that Derek was just as nervous as he was. Scott wasn’t sure how long he had to wait before Derek opened his eyes but when he did he half shifted and his eyes glowed yellow, the roar that Derek unleashed enough to bring a smile to Scott’s face. “It worked, you’re back.”DEREK HALE

Stiles and his inability to keep his nose out of things had put him in danger time and time again. Things didn’t like mouthy kids prying into their business, he hadn’t liked that mouthy kid prying into his business, even if he had saved his ass from that tomb and had tried to open his eyes to what was glaringly wrong with Alix before that truth had spilled out hot and poisonous like an infected wound being lanced. Derek had found himself putting trust in Stiles though, the truth of it hidden beneath the snarls and the threats and the frustration. Stiles didn’t stop, he dug and ignored all the danger that he seemed to elbow his way into every time. He might’ve been tilting at windmills, seeing nightmares and suspicion everywhere, but he did get to the bottom of things. Except for the Dread Doctors.
Every time they’d come up empty another layer of that hope had been abraded away until all that was left was the desperation that drove them to this. Derek’s eyes had come up to study Scott as the honesty had rolled out of his mouth. That was part of what made Scott the Alpha he never could’ve been – not just his heart, but the consideration he gave everything. Peter had been rash, not ignorant of the consequences but not bothered by them, without meaning to he’d gone down the same path but not Scott. ”Family,” he said hoarsely. His head barely bobbed, fingers curling around the edge of the countertop. Family when his own had been reduced to ash or torn away, even now barely pulled back together again. Derek’s mouth curled tight, his head tilting slightly. ”My family’s cost you enough that some people wouldn’t have questioned it if you’d left me to suffer but …thank you.” Scott wasn’t far off the mark. He didn’t just hate this, it was hollowing him out, every day a little more of who he’d been lost to this.
If this was the end and those last parts fell away at least they would’ve tried. What remained of Derek Hale washed away in blood and pain but at least letting him go down fighting. The pain rolled through, the roar of pain that tried to escape from him held back by locked muscles and desperation. His knees gave way as Scott released him, sending him skidding down to the floor. Derek felt his heart race in his chest, his lungs heaving until the adrenalin rolled back in and wiped all of that away. Derek let his head thud back against the counter, his arm cradled across the top of his knees. ”Plan C then, D, G, Z?” There wouldn’t likely be anything to stop the chain reaction once it started, dominos falling, the corruption growing to the point where he died in agony, like Paige.
When the roar came it felt like life zipped through his body again. A wave of it starting in his arm where the skin was already starting to heal, racing along every vein and nerve until he was on fire with it. He was himself again, instead of the half broken thing that could be everybody but who he’d been. Derek pushed to his feet, his breath still coming short but the grin working its way over his face all the same. It was at least half luck, but the rest, that was Scott’s faith and that spark that had his eyes shining red when he turned the same way. ”You did it, you’re the reason I’m back. Thank you.” Derek felt his throat squeeze tight as he pulled Scott in to a hug and thumped his hand against his back. No more cowering away from what was in this town and what had changed him. It was time to fight again in the only way he’d ever known how.

Scott had been working with his friends to try and find a way to reverse what the Dread Doctors had done to Derek but they hadn’t been able to come up with anything that would have worked. He knew that his friend was desperate to get back to being a werewolf, after all that was the way Derek was born and Scott couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like for him to have had that ripped away from him. Scott had been bitten and for a long time he had wanted nothing more than to go back to being human but as time went on he had learned to embrace what he was and even though there were still plenty of times when he had absolutely no idea what he was doing, he knew now that he was meant to be a werewolf. It had taken Scott a while to accept that and he knew that he would never forget the way that his mom had looked at him like he was a monster when she found out the truth but she had come around and so had everyone else in his life. He had gone from having just his mom and Stiles in his life to having a whole family around him and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. They all had the chance to stay true to who they were but it wasn’t that way for Derek at the moment and Scott knew that needed to change. Agreeing to give him the Bite was risky since he knew that there was a chance that it might not take but they had all seen what it could do when he had bitten the Nogitsune and if it could do that to something like that then he really hoped that it would be enough to turn Derek back into a werewolf. Derek had been there for him from the moment he’d been bitten and the truth was that Scott hated his brother looking so lost so he knew that he had to try. “Peter may have done that but you haven’t. You’ve only ever tried to help me and I’ll never forget that. I never would have been able to get this far without you,” Scott assured him. He knew that he wouldn’t have made it through those first few months without Derek’s help let alone the years and all of the trials that had followed. He owed Derek so much and he knew that this was the least he could do. Scott could still remember the pain that had come from being bitten himself and he could see that same pain twisting Derek’s face up now. “Exactly. Whatever it takes,” Scott nodded, knowing that none of them were going to give up on Derek. He was family just as much as any of them were. Finally a roar came from Derek and it was enough to have relief flooding through Scott. He had known that trying the bite had been Derek’s decision in the end just as it should be but even so he would be lying if he said that he hadn’t felt scared that it wouldn’t work and that it would end up killing Derek instead. Thankfully that hadn’t happened, though, and Scott knew that he had never been more relieved about anything in his life. “It was still your decision, I’m just glad it worked,” Scott admitted as he hugged Derek back tightly. “You don’t have to worry about turning into someone else now but you will have to go back to shifting every full moon. Any regrets?” he asked. The pain that came with shifting into a wolf with every full moon was something that Scott hated but he had grown used to it over the years and there wasn’t anything like being able to run through the night as a wolf. It was a part of him now and it was a part of Derek once more. DEREK HALE

Had there been some element of karma to having what he was stripped away by some twisted scientists hell bent on making the supernatural world even more than a nightmare? It was a question he’d mulled over night after night since Scott and Stiles had broken him out of the tomb the Dread Doctors had left him in. Awake and staring at the ceiling, feeling that itch under his skin, the need to turn and be someone else, the hatred of it stopping him from going through with it. Derek knew he wasn’t on the level of Peter or Deucalion or any of the others who had torn their lives apart in the last couple of years but he hadn’t exactly been a saint. There were things that still laid heavy on his conscience and no amount of sacrifice was gonna sweep them all away.
The bite might not even manage that. It was the one shining beacon of hope that something would though. Maybe that would come with a price of its own if karma had black blood pouring out of him but the risk definitely seemed worth it. One minute of pain and it could all be wiped away. Derek’s fingertips drummed lightly against the underside of the counter as he nodded at Scott. His lips twitched faintly. ”Not always but I’m glad the good’s outweighed the bad.” Peter had sworn he was trying to make sure he did the same when he reached town but there was so much more for his uncle to try and repent for and so far there hadn’t been a single sign that Peter was managing to do any of it.
He could almost see Peter arriving, watching proceedings with that same chill in his eyes. A predator appraising a situation to see if there was a weakness to be exploited. It had always been Peter’s way and no amount of promises was going to change that. Scott on the other hand … Derek stared up at him through those waves of pain, pale eyes staring from beneath dark lashes. ”Let’s hope … we don’t need any.” That hope curled tighter in his chest with every second that passed. No sign that this was failing, chances rising with each second before the change rippled invisibly through him and the roar rose. The plan had worked, Scott’s bite had the power to wipe away what the docs had done and that didn’t just hold that promise for him. It held promise for all of those who had been twisted and broken by those things.
Derek thumped his hand against Scott’s back, a dry bark of laughter rolling up out of him. The curse had been broken, everything stripped away to the point where he almost felt reborn. He could’ve chickened out but the desperation had bitten harder than the fear. ”That makes two of us.” Huffing out a breath as he drew back, Derek shook his head. His expression sobered as he settled back against the edge of the counter. ”None. I’ll take the pain every month over that. We should celebrate, get the whole pack here.” Stiles would just about swallow his tongue but it was about time to get their feet under them now and start putting an end to whatever was going on in this town.
