Kara was working as a detective in the Thief River police department when she and Virgil first crossed paths. Sparks flew, rapidly turning into the sort of fireworks that are all heat and incredibly explosive. Virgil would have heard plenty of people warning Kara away from him, not at all subtly but for once in his life he decided to pursue something more than a one night stand (or one week if the woman was really worth keeping around). Their relationship was a powder keg at the best of times, the two of them as likely to end up arguing about something as they were to be getting on.
A year after meeting, the two of them were moving in together. Just months after that Virgil was producing a ring and getting down on one knee. Protests against the two of them from Kara’s family only grew but the two of them ignored it and settled down as a married couple. It was never going to last though.
As an investigator for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Virgil knew what the job was like, he even knew how to handle Kara’s banshee side (something she came clean about to him before they were engaged), but he didn’t understand her obsession when Kara’s brother was attacked by a werewolf a year after their marriage and almost died. By this time Virgil was growing itchy within the confines of his marriage. There had been some flirtations with women in the towns he visited for the job. By the time things came to a head nine months later, Virgil was fully cheating on his wife, staying out all hours, disappearing for days, returning reeking of other women’s perfume. Sparks flew again but not the good kind, Virgil blamed the breakdown of their marriage on Kara’s obsession, she blamed it on his inability to keep his pants on. With her brother at her back Kara kicked Virgil out of the house and asked for a divorce.
When Kara went on the road to continue hunting the supernatural using her banshee powers Virgil remained in Minnesota, continuing to work as a BCA investigator. His feelings for his wife remained an itch under his skin in that time.
It is up to the player whether or not Virgil ended up getting deeper into the supernatural in the two years that Kara has been gone and what has now brought him to Mystic Falls. The fire is still going to be there between Virgil and Kara, perhaps burning hot enough to bring these two together for round two.
Virgil’s history outside of his marriage is up to the player. The details of their marriage (as covered in Kara’s app) are fixed as are the above details of Virgil’s personality. The man is self-admitted sex on legs and isn’t afraid to show it.
