Some things you could buy, others you could make yourself, but most of the things he needed for a certain aspect of his job you had to find. Frowning faintly, Noah picked his way through the woods that crept right up to the manicured edges of Whitmore’s campus. A lot of spots around Mystic Falls seemed to be utterly devoid of the herbs he needed for the tests he was trying to run on the samples he’d managed to obtain from a few of the wolves who’d been killed in New Orleans and the couple he knew for sure had died weirdly here. Those were as thin on the ground as the mountain ash was out here, thinner than the Yellow Sweetclover he’d been hunting for over an hour.
It had grown in New Orleans, out in the woods near where a couple of the packs had been found. For centuries it had been known as an anticoagulant, something he suspected might have had something to do with the deaths of the wolves. By all accounts they’d lost their minds, attacking one another before blood had started to leach out of them. Bleeding in the brain would’ve explained it, although most of the time it was just animals that ate the plants as they grew moldy. That wasn’t to say that it hadn’t been fed to them though. His dad had always told him that sometimes there was a perfectly reasonable, human explanation to things, even when the supernatural was absolutely everywhere you looked.
Not this afternoon it wasn’t. Two nights ago a werewolf had died out here, the sheriff’s department finding the body before it supposedly disappeared from the morgue over the night. Sheriff Forbes had likely wanted to keep the whole thing quiet but when you engaged the right person in conversation the right way sometimes all of those secrets came pouring out. The hospital porter had been happy enough to talk at the Grill last night, although Noah imagined he was gonna have one hell of a hangover today. His own headache had been eased by what felt like a couple of quarts of water and one of Scarlet’s breakfasts this morning. No pills necessary when you had a wife who knew how to work that stuff out another way. Noah half smiled. If he managed to find the Sweetclover in the next hour or so he could swing by the high school and pick her up, maybe take her out for dinner if Kiera wasn’t back home yet.
Noah clucked his tongue and started working his way through another thicket of undergrowth to a clearing closer to the edge of the campus. He was halfway there when he heard footsteps working their way towards him. Brows rose as he hopped out onto the path, coming almost face to face with what looked like a student as he did so. ”Hey,” he murmured, half sure he recognized him, although maybe not from one of his classes. ”This is gonna sound like a strange question but have you seen a plant out here…” Noah smiled wryly, half expecting a sarcastic answer from the guy. ”…about yay tall, little yellow bell shaped flowers?” He raked his teeth over his lower lip, propped his hands on his hips for a moment as he glanced around. They slid back to his sides as he looked back at the student. ”You’re not in one of my classes are you? Scandinavian studies? I covered a couple of mythology classes a few weeks back too…” The subject had meshed well enough that he hadn’t felt completely out of his depth when he’d offered to do the cover.

Danny knew that he could have graduated from high school a year before his friends and gone on to college and if he had done then he would have already been half way through his time there by now. He would be lying if he said that the thought hadn’t crossed his mind but at the end of the day he had stayed around for his senior year so that he could be there with Riley and his friends and it wasn’t a decision that Danny regretted. He could have gone to college anywhere in the country and he had actually been accepted into some Ivy League schools. He knew that his parents had wanted him to accept the offer to go to one of those schools but he had thought long and hard about it and he had realised that leaving behind everyone that he cared about just wasn’t an option. He knew that he and Riley could have figured out the long distance thing if they’d needed to but since he had also been accepted into Whitmore it had been a no brainer to stay closer to home and go to college with the rest of his friends. Danny knew that he could always do a post graduate course if he wanted to anyway but Whitmore was a well respected school in its own right so he knew that he had done the right thing. Being able to stay with Riley and his friends made it all worthwhile and Danny was pretty sure that his parents liked having him around as well. Had he gone to a college across the country then he wouldn’t have been able to see much of them at all and that just wasn’t an option as far as he was concerned. They had stood by every decision that he had made and now was no exception so things had worked out well in the end. So far he was enjoying his time at Whitmore anyway, his classes were going well and he was learning a lot so he knew that that was all that mattered. Now he had a free period on his hands so he had headed outside to get some fresh air and he hadn’t been out there long when someone started talking to him. “Hey,” he said as he studied the guy carefully for a moment. Danny was pretty sure that he had ended up covering one of his classes a few weeks ago and it seemed like the guy recognised him as well. “Are you talking about sweet clover? There’s a patch of it just inside the woods. I can show you if you like,” he offered. Danny knew that a lot of the students probably would have given the guy some kind of snide comment and been on their way but that wasn’t him, he helped when he could and this was something that he was pretty sure he could help with so nothing was going to stop him from doing that. “I’m not in your class but I do take Mythology. That must be where I know you from. I’m Danny.”NOAH JACOBSEN

He’d been about three when his dad had taken him out to gather ingredients for the first time. To a little shop down by the docks first. It had been all dark wood and low ceilings, like something out a Dickens novel he’d thought at the time. The owner had looked less scary and more like Father Christmas though. Almost round in shape, a big white beard, a booming laugh. He hadn’t known that the man was a warlock. All of that knowledge had come slowly, woven through his every day life in a way that had never left him feeling like the supernatural was something strange or scary. Noah knew most hadn’t had that opportunity. Supernaturals with a lineage were more often than not were raised in it but for everybody else it tended to be a rude awakening. What he was trying to do here in town wasn’t likely to prevent that for those who were getting dragged into the other side of things in Mystic Falls from getting that rude awakening but it might stop some who were already there from getting hurt?
Hearing the guy coming, Noah hadn’t a clue whether or not he was someone who’d seen through that veil. With some it was obvious, the marks of what they were obvious enough for him to pick up on it even if others couldn’t … others took some work. Noah nodded as he returned his greeting, his lips twitching as he was studied. His attention focused back on the student as he asked what he was talking about. Maybe the kid was definitely on the other side of it. ”Yeah, sweet clover, yellow sweet clover.” Letting out a long breath he extended his arm, encouraging him to lead the way. ”I think you’re probably the only other person on campus who would’ve known what I was talking about. I can’t see many students paying much attention to what grows out in the woods.” There were those who did though, those who knew what these plants could be used for. Each had their own use, even if it had been forgotten with the passing of time. Not all of them could do a great deal of harm but used wrongly the sweet clover could certainly had produced the bleeding the wolves had suffered … in humans at least. Who knew what sort of healing protection the wolves would’ve had against it.
Noah slipped his hands into his pockets and started in the direction the guy had pointed out. He kept his gaze skittering towards the kid, always studying, always taking in those little gestures of body language. Bobbing his head, Noah slanted a smile at him. ”That’d be it. Hopefully my cover wasn’t too bad. Mythology crosses over some with what I teach but there’s so much more of it out there than the Norse pantheon.” Tugging his hand free, Noah offered it. ”Noah. I won’t make you call me Professor Jacobsen,” he promised. Looking away, Noah lifted his chin towards the woods. ”So how did you know where the sweet clover was? I’ve spent a lot of time out in the woods since we moved here but there always seems to be hidden little spots only the locals know.” It had been that way back home too, on the outskirts of Boston, even in the city itself. It rarely looked as though a city that large was green but if you knew where you lived, you knew where to find anything you needed, including the sort of medicinal herbs and plants you could use for good or for ill.

Danny hadn’t had the benefit of knowing that he came from a long line of druids and growing up with it like his parents had had the chance to do but ever since he’d learned the truth he had been learning as much as he could about his heritage. His parents hadn’t told him much about why they had turned their back on it, only that there was some kind of threat that they had been scared of so they had walked away from it in order to save themselves, and Danny knew that he could have done the same but for him that hadn’t been an option. He had embraced his druid heritage after learning that Allison had been brought back to life and was being possessed by a demon as he had wanted to help the others either save her or at least lay her to rest once more. His parents had supported his decision as they had realised that it was something that he had needed to do and he didn’t regret it but he would be lying if he said that the premonition that Terra had had while they were at prom hadn’t shaken him up. She hadn’t told him much about what she had seen, only that he needed to keep Riley with him because it wasn’t safe for him to be on his own, but whatever she had seen had truly scared her and that was enough to make Danny take it seriously. He and the others had banded around Scott after he was attacked by wolves who had wanted to impress Klaus and they had made sure that he didn’t go anywhere alone until they were sure that the danger had passed and Danny knew that his friends would have done the same for him if he had asked them to but that wasn’t what he’d wanted. He was used to helping his friends solve their problems not the other way around and he hadn’t talked to Riley about it either. Danny wasn’t sure if his boyfriend had overheard what Terra had said to him that night but if he had then he hadn’t mentioned it and Danny knew that the last thing he wanted was for anyone to see him as someone who needed to be watched constantly, least of all Riley so he had kept it to himself. Things had gone on as normal after that and so far nothing bad had happened but Danny knew better than to think that it wasn’t going to. He had been doing a lot of research since that night, his grandparents had sent over some old journals that talked about a curse that his family had been plagued with for generations and Danny was doing his best to figure out how to break it. From what he had been able to gather a number of his family had been killed but so far he didn’t even know who was responsible so he was trying to live his life as normally as he could. That included still going to school but now he couldn’t deny that he was intrigued about why the Scandinavian Studies professor was looking for yellow sweet clover of all things. As the guy spoke, Danny couldn’t help but laugh. “Luckily I’m not like most students. I like knowing what plants and herbs are around,” Danny admitted. “What do you need it for?” he asked, unable to deny that he was curious. So far he hadn’t come across any other druids during his time in Mystic Falls but there were some witches and warlocks who might have use of it and there was a chance that some regular people might want it too so he knew better than to jump to conclusions just yet. “It wasn’t, I thought it was actually really interesting,” he said sincerely. It had been a different take on the class, that was for sure, but that definitely wasn’t a bad thing. “I appreciate that. It’s good to meet you,” he chuckled as he shook Noah’s outstretched hand before leading the way in the direction of the woods. “I’m not so sure I could be classed as a local, I’ve only been here for a few years myself,” he admitted as they walked. “A lot of people don’t know how to use the resources around them to their full potential but I’ve always enjoyed it,” he added with a shrug. “It comes in handy for home remedies,” he said, knowing that that was probably the safest explanation since he couldn’t exactly launch into the things he needed it for in order to help his pack. Parties and drinking til he’d thrown up everything he’d eaten for a week had never been something he’d indulged in. Noah knew that made him an anathema among most folks. It wasn’t just college kids who went through that stage, most teenagers did at one time or another but even before he’d hit high school he’d been the sort who was quiet and steady. He drank at family celebrations, had enjoyed a beer or three with his sister once he was old enough but there’d never been a party animal period. Noah knew if he admitted that to most of the students in his classes they’d look at him like he’d been some sort of social pariah but it had never been that, he’d just grown up knowing what he was and who he wanted to be. He was happy to fill that roll. If that made him boring or a weirdo then so be it. It was just him.
Some of the kids at Whitmore at least, seemed happy to focus on their studies, on the world around them as much as they did which fraternity was hosting this weekend and how many rounds of beer pong they could lose before they collapsed. He should’ve known that any kid poking around in the woods out here was the sort more concerned with knowing what was out here than they were parties. Noah watched the kid as he began to lead the way though. ”I can see that,” he murmured, a good natured smile tugging at his lips. ”Maybe I should’ve checked in with the botany department, see who had a knack for this sorta thing.” A knack for asking questions too. Lifting his hand, Noah scratched at the back of his neck before he slipped his hands into his pockets. ”Yellow clover has a lot of medical uses, if you handle it in the right way.” If you didn’t you could cause excessive bleeding, the very thing that had happened to the wolf packs that had torn themselves to pieces in New Orleans. He hadn’t found any evidence of the same thing happening in Mystic Falls yet but he wasn’t taking any risks.
Laughter rolled out of Noah as he hunched his shoulders slightly. He shook his head at Danny, making it clear that there was no need for him to be buttered up about it. He knew that at least half the class had probably tuned out while he’d been teaching. Mythology was the sort of thing most took thinking they could write assignments about Marvel’s version of Loki and Thor and get an easy A. ”Most probably wouldn’t agree but I appreciate the compliment.” He introduced himself to Danny in return, reaching out to shake hands. ”You too.” He drew in a breath, carried on strolling as he slipped his hand back into his pocket. ”That’s longer than I’ve been here. We just arrived a few months back. You’re right, most don’t, modern medicine’s erased a lot of knowledge.” As Danny mentioned home remedies, like he had done earlier, Noah slanted a sideways glance at the kid. Maybe it was a trendy thing these days but there were others with deeper roots in that sort of art who still focused on it. ”It was the sort of thing used in a lot of rituals historically. People like the Celtic druids were incredibly aware of what was around them, what it was capable of doing.” What they were capable of doing before the supernatural had been forced even deeper underground.
