It was rare for him to be sitting around the hospital twiddling his thumbs for too long but today was different. His normal steady flow of blood draw apartments had slowed to a trickle for some unknown reason. He’d spent an hour standing in his lab, alternating between staring at the door and standing at the window, staring out past his blinds as though he had the sort of laser vision he’d be able to knock someone off their bike or cause a car smash with. A couple of decently bloody draws, that was all he needed, Mal thought grudgingly. In between he’d settled on the stool he used like his throne in the room and span himself around slowly in utter boredom. At least if he’d been like the doc, Mathias or Melina, he’d have had his little side line to work on when things grew quiet. Muscle wasn’t exactly trusted with the sciency stuff though, muscle just grabbed them in the first place and wiped their little brains afterwards.
By the time the clock ticked down to half past five and the appointments dried up entirely Mal was ready to go and grab someone off the street just to relieve the damn itch under his skin. He kicked the stool back towards the desk in the corner as he stood and stared at the clock. Officially he wasn’t off until 8 tonight. No leaving the premises to head to one of the pubs in town for a little … shopping … or down to their little base of operations to see just how their latest clutch of little chicks was getting on. One of the human kids they’d snatched up recently had proven tasty. Mal’s throat worked at the thought. He couldn’t go yet though, not when he was on the clock and the hospital’s owner was likely to rip him a new one for swanning off. For all he knew an emergency could come through at any moment and the fumbling docs in the ER would call for magician to come down and get a line for them, or draw blood from a difficult vein without collapsing their only access.
Blowing out a breath, he wiggled those talented, alright, experienced, fingers and walked towards the door. He’d take a stroll downstairs, see if he could offer up his services anywhere and if not there was always the cafeteria. Mal knew that eating their food was one of the few ways of giving themselves the appearance of life but still, it was about as unappealing as eating sawdust. By the time he reached the ER he was practically trotting, by the time he’d finished a circuit and enquired with a handful of the docs and nurses if there was anything he could lend a hand with, he was ready to tip his head back and yell at the ceiling. The walk back up to the cafeteria was slower, the grumbling going on in the back of Mal’s head as he pushed through the door. It was all smiles for the cafeteria staff as he lined up to grab a roast beef sandwich, the rarest meat they could grab for him out of what was laid out. A cup of coffee to warm the cold cockles of a vampire’s heart.
For the first time that afternoon Mal genuinely grinned as he turned and spotted one of the docs at a table on his own. Leroux. The best buddy of the alpha of a pack they’d taken half of for their experiments. Maybe the day wasn’t such a waste after all. Grinning broadly Mal approached and set his ‘dinner’ down on the table before he dropped into one of the spare seats. ”Wotcha, doc. Don’t mind do ya?” He glanced around the cafeteria that was pretty crowded with most of the post day shift crowd who were grabbing something before they came home and the night shift crowd crazy enough to eat at work before they clocked in. ”Looks like everyone and their brother decided to come eat while it was quiet. Morgue like downstairs for your lot?” Raising his eyebrows Mal glanced back at the man in front of him.

Julian always liked being kept busy, especially while he was at work. There was often something going on around the hospital and when he wasn’t working he was often being dragged along to events at the evening to try and get across to potential donors just how their money could help them improve things at the hospital. The latter was dull to say the least but it was a necessary evil sometimes so he always did his best to convince as many of the people there to part with their money as he could. Julian would be the first to admit that he was out of his element when it came to that side of the job but when it came to actually treating his patients then that was where he flourished. He could still remember the looks that a lot of people had given him when he’d told them that he wanted to become a doctor, they hadn’t believed him at first but he had stuck with it and losing his best friend and the other guys that Brady had gone travelling with while they were in Ecuador had made Julian more determined than ever to follow his dream. It hadn’t been easy and those who taught him had really put him through the ringer a few times but he had managed to come out of it the other side and now with the experience he had under his belt he was doing a lot better than he would have thought. He knew that he could have taken a job in a bigger hospital in one of the cities nearby but Mystic Falls was his home and the reason why he had wanted to become a doctor in the first place was so that he could help the people who lived there so he knew that he had done the right thing by deciding to stay. It had proved to be worth it to stay close to his family and the fact that Brady, Emily and the rest of the pack had moved back to Mystic Falls from New Orleans a couple of years ago now had only reiterated the fact that he had made the right decision. He could have gone anywhere but he knew that it wouldn’t have felt like home without the people that he cared about around him and leaving them just wasn’t an option. At the start of his shift that day it had been so busy that Julian had longed for a bit of downtime so that he could relax for a bit but it hadn’t looked like it was going to happen. Patient after patient had been wheeled in that had needed his help and he had been in and out of the operating theatre for most of the day. Given that the hospital in Mystic Falls wasn’t that big compared to a lot of the ones around the country he often ended up treating patients who didn’t need surgery as well but if he was honest he liked being able to do both. It kept both his mind and his skills sharp and it meant that when he wasn’t needed in surgery he was still able to keep busy and make sure that the other patients were being looked after as well. As the day went on, however, things seemed to quieten down until it got to the point where they were almost at a standstill and Julian knew that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take the time to get something to eat and have a semi decent cup of coffee. It still wasn’t going to be great but it would be better than what they had in the doctor’s lounge anyway. Thankfully he managed to get to the cafeteria just before everyone else seemed to have the same idea so he was able to get what he wanted and find a table before the place began to fill up. All of the others who walked through the doors seemed happy to leave him to it as he tried to get his head around a particularly complicated case but soon a voice spoke and Julian looked up to see Mal join him without waiting for an answer. “I don’t think it would make a difference how I answered that so go ahead,” he said simply although he looked around him to see that the rest of the tables were full so he knew that he couldn’t really say no. “It is at the moment but it wasn’t like it when my shift started and something tells me it won’t stay like this for long either. Not much going on your end either?”MAL BLACKTHORNE

Being trapped on a ship with someone for months at a time, sleeping a foot away from the ripe smelling men stuck in the same situation as you, fighting side by side with them, it didn’t make you friends with them. Friends had always been a sort of nebulous concept for him. Growing up he didn’t have any. There were other kids on the docks, but none in his situation, none who’d tried to stick up for him at the end. Maybe he talked up a good game with them during the years they’d sailed together but in the end there wasn’t much heartache when half of them had been killed and time and time again he’d left them behind as he’d skittered through the years like a cockroach.
Mal supposed that some would flinch at describing themselves that way. He was a realist though, always was, always had been. These days the closest thing he got to friendship was with the rest of the docs and even then Mal was pretty certain that Marcel would’ve sacrificed the rest of them in a heartbeat if it would’ve gotten Sebastien back quicker. He’d run the minute they had found a way to resurrect the Beast of Gevaudan hadn’t he? The two of them had scurried out of town, leaving the rest of them twiddling their thumbs. If Mathias and Meline didn’t both have reasons to carry on experimenting he had a feeling they’d be gone too. He might’ve stuck around a little longer though, he was on to something half decent here.
Especially with all the town’s folk fooled by his pretty face and the cheeky chappy accent that only seemed to have gotten stronger with the ruses he played over the years. It was thick now as he asked if he could pull up a pew so to speak. Mal’s grin was broad as the doc responded after he’d sat down. ”Well, it was your table or sit in someone’s lap. I didn’t think Dr. Williams would appreciate that too much.” In this day and age that sort of lewd behaviour, albeit, innocent lewd behaviour in these circumstances, would’ve been termed sexual harassment. On the docks that was merely an invitation to a good time. Things here were meant to be civil though, evolved so to speak.
Mal fluttered dark lashes as he started to peel the plastic wrap from his sandwich. No matter how rare the beef was it wasn’t going to compare to what he could’ve got from the vein. His nose wrinkled faintly as he took a bite. Not that he’d feed from a cow of course, veggie vampirism was not his thing, not if there was any other way available to feed. Chewing his mouthful, Mal bobbed his head like he understood. Hospitals had their ebb and flow, just as the doctors quarters on the boat always had. ”Not now that two of us have cursed it,” he agreed. Mal lifted his hand, swiped a smear of mayo from his lip with a thumb before he slipped the tip of it into his mouth. ”Busy enough this morning. Lots of appointments for blood draws. Afternoons are usually when your lot start calling me down. I was half expecting the phone to start ringing but I guess until this lot start getting back to work it’ll stay quiet enough. How you doin’ otherwise?” Honestly, most of the time he didn’t care about anybody’s wellbeing but his own but like with workplace rules, everybody expected you to show some concern for others these days. Apparently it was common courtesy.

Julian had grown used to busy days during his time at the hospital but this was something else entirely. So far it had been non-stop, there seemed to have been one disaster after another and Julian wouldn’t be surprised at all if it stayed like that for the rest of the day. Being a weretiger meant that Julian was naturally more aware of what was going on in Mystic Falls than most people were but even so there seemed to be a lot more people coming through the doors of the hospital that day. Julian seemed to be moving from one patient to another without stopping for too long so needless to say it came as a relief when he was able to take a break and get something to eat although it seemed that he wasn’t the only one who’d had that thought. The cafeteria was packed and he had thought that he might have ended up seeing a few of his friends while he was there but they were still working it seemed and he knew that he would have to catch up with them later instead. For now he just needed a break to clear his head and get something to eat and drink and he was glad that he had the chance to do that. He had been fortunate enough to get there when it wasn’t too busy and he’d managed to get his order sorted and found a table by the time the others showed up and for a while it looked like he was lucky enough not to be disturbed but a part of him had known that it wasn’t going to last. Out of everyone that could have joined him that day he hadn’t expected it to be Mal considering that the two of them didn’t know each other very well but it seemed like he didn’t have much of a choice in the matter anyway so he knew that he might as well just go along with it and see what he wanted. “I think you’re right about that,” he chuckled as the guy said that sitting on Jess’ lap wasn’t going to be a good idea. She had enough going on right now without adding that to the mix as well and since all of the other tables were full he knew that it made sense for him to share his. Taking a bite of his lunch, he felt a smile work its way across his face at the guy’s next words. “I hope not, this is the first moment of peace I’ve had all shift,” he admitted. He knew that Mal was right, they probably had gone and jinxed it but Julian knew that he could still hope that it would stay quiet for a while longer anyway. “I’ll probably be seeing you around later then,” he nodded as he took a sip of his drink. “I’m doing alright, looking forward to having the day off tomorrow though. How about you?”MAL BLACKTHORNE

Out of his two bosses one was far easier to please than the other. Dr. Williams had started out human, just like most of the rest of her senior staff here. They were easy to compel if needed, easy to get around. He hadn’t bothered during his interview with the head of haematology. A flutter of dark lashes and the look of a choir boy had charmed them easily enough. The qualifications were all forged, along with each of the letters of recommendation he’d provided. Compulsion had gotten him this far, scoring him all the paperwork he’d needed, giving him a spring board to find himself a place in every hospital he’d been through in the last few years. Just like with every other town they’d been in, they’d assimilate for as longer as they needed to and then all these little pally friendships and civility would be in the rear view mirror when they cleared out, leaving the broken little bodies of their failures behind.
That wasn’t what they’d achieved in Mystic Falls though. Most of those they’d taken had proven to be successes and the boss had been so grateful with it that as soon as his old friend had been resurrected the two of them had cleared out, leaving the rest of them to twiddle their thumbs, or have fun wrapping their fellow residents around their little fingers. He doubted that Julian was there quite yet but the cheeky chappy charm would get him almost everywhere. Mal chuckled, sharing in the little joke with his fellow doc. ”You and her … you know, friends?” he asked, hazel eyes crinkling at the corners. He could’ve put more emphasis on the word friends but he knew that this one wasn’t the boss’ boy toy. That one he’d seen around town from time to time. It paid to keep eyes on those in positions of power. ”She’s from round here, ain’t she?” Mal gestured around them with his fork, meaning the town at large. The local always seemed to have that added delusion of grandeur, like they were the ones that controlled this little town.
He'd let them have their delusions for now. Poor little blind things. It almost had him wanting to reach over and pat Julian’s cheek sympathetically like he was a child to feel sympathetic for. The hospital always burst into action in the end, the things that called the town home making sure that violence would break out here eventually. ”Well,” he mumbled around his thumb, before he pulled it free. ”Better keep your fingers crossed now. They do say bad luck comes in threes right?” Like your friend being triggered into becoming a werewolf, then your pack going missing. He wasn’t about to tick those things off aloud though. Mal snagged a potato chip from his plate and crunched into it, his lips curving around it. ”More than likely. I’ll have to make sure I say I told you so when I end up down there.” Laughing, Mal shook his head. He sucked a breath in through his teeth as let it tail off. ”Got yourself plans? Me? Working my fingers to the bone,” he admitted. ”Always seems like there’s more to do. Been trying to blow off steam afterwards, always safest right? You ever been to that bar off the square? Campbell’s? I feel like I’m in there most nights lately.” Finding himself a new bed fellow when necessary, keeping an eye on those who would end up making good experiments in the end. Dangerous perhaps but until better prospects came his way, it kept him somewhat out of trouble.

Julian had learned a long time ago to make the most of any quiet time he got while he was on shift. Normally there was always something going on and he was often in and out of surgery, moving around the departments giving various consults or helping out with emergencies when they came in but now and then he got to have a bit of downtime like this and Julian always tried to make the most of it. He liked being kept busy but it was good to have some time to recharge every now and then and he had a feeling that a lot of the doctors at the hospital were the same. They all loved their jobs but every now and then a break did them all good. That day had started out as a pretty busy one but as time went on things had started to quieten down and Julian had decided to use that to his advantage and get something to eat while he had the chance. Some days were so busy that Julian didn’t even get the chance to stop for something to eat but he always managed and he knew that it was the same for everyone. He didn’t really know Mal so he hadn’t thought that the guy would end up joining him but so far he wasn’t sure if that was a good or a bad thing. There was something about the guy that Julian didn’t trust just yet but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what that was. He knew that looks could be deceiving, though, so he knew that he needed to reserve judgement for the time being and see what happened. “We’re friends, we were at school together and she’s dating my best friend,” he explained. Things seemed to be going well for Brady and Jessica and for that he truly was grateful. As Mal asked if she was from town, Julian nodded. “Yeah she is, we both grew up here,” he nodded. Julian had taken the chance to study in New Orleans with his friends when it had presented itself but after Brady and the others were kidnapped and Emily disappeared he had returned to Mystic Falls and finished his education at Whitmore. Working at the hospital in town had proved to be good for him, some of his patients were people he had grown up around so they knew that he could be trusted and that made it that much easier at times. “It does, especially around here,” Julian nodded. He had seen a lot of things over the years but life in Mystic Falls had definitely changed a lot from when he was growing up and bad things seemed to happen much more often. “I bet you will,” he chuckled as Mal said that he would make sure to say he’d told him so. It was bound to get busier and he wouldn’t be at all surprised if he did end up seeing Mal later in a different setting. “Not really, I’m just going to spend some time with my brother and sister,” he shrugged. It wasn’t particularly exciting but both Amy and Dec had the day off and they meant the world to Julian so he always liked to spend time with them when he had the chance. “I’ve been there a few times but I normally end up at the Grill. It’s an old haunt from when I was younger,” he explained. He could still remember the amount of evenings he’d spent there hanging out with Brady and Emily and the truth was that he’d always had a soft spot for the place. “How are you finding Campbells?”MAL BLACKTHORNE

They were a blind bunch around here. The docs who treated the ‘human’ population. Some definitely didn’t fit that label any more than he did now. They hid under the white coat, under the human surface, hoping to hell that the people they were treating didn’t get a glimpse of who was really patching them up. He’d seen them all here, witches, warlocks, vampires, plenty of them liked to masquerade like he did, although none had latched onto the gig he had done with the blood draw. Then there were the shifters. They weren’t any more likely to advertise it than the rest of them but there was almost a scent to them that was inescapable. You could tell it anywhere where you’d had enough of them as your guests over the years and this one had more reasons to be familiar than most of the others. Mal had to squelch the grin over it, keeping up that bland look of friendliness. Hazel eyes wide and guileless, his lips curled into a grin as he’d helped himself to a seat at the table.
Poor Dr. LeRoux. Eyes open to some things, so blind to what was sitting in front of him. A shame really. Mal couldn’t cluck his tongue and shake his head over it though, not without starting to give the game away. He settled in at the table instead, working his way through the roast beef sandwich he’s ordered, poking his fork at the potato salad that came along with it. ”Oh really?” Mal asked, winging a brow at him, like he hadn’t known already. ”Better watch what I saw about the boss around you then. Wouldn’t wanna get on her bad side via proxy.” Mal made a low sound in his throat as Julian confirmed they’d both grown up here. His hazel eyes glanced up from the decidedly dodgy looking salad to the man opposite him. ”Seems like most who grew up here stick around. You never got the yen to travel then?” Probably not considering his pack was here. The best friend had though, going on his little adventure before he got lost for a bit. The sister had spilled that much in their little chats.
Mal plucked his thumb from his mouth, looking at Julian with that guilelessness on his face again. Like him and the other docs weren’t to blame for a good chunk of the bad luck around here these days. He fluttered his lashes, reaching for a couple of chips. ”Beginnin’ to think I might’ve picked the wrong town,” he admitted on a chuckle. They’d known full well what Mystic Falls was like before they’d come here. It was part of the reason they’d arrived. A rich hunting ground, all those bodies already turning up in weird ways. Nobody was gonna bat an eyelash at a few more. He’d snorted now, like Julian was amusing him. ”Gladly,” he promised. ”Siblings, nice. Never had none myself, not that I knew of anyway. You get to spend much time with them?” Little shifters just like their brother, none of them as invisible as they liked to think here, especially not when people kept putting them on the radar. Mal picked up his sandwich again, aimed a corner of it at Julian as he smirked. ”A traditionalist, I like it. A man who sticks with what he knows. It’s a decent place. Owner’s from back my way. She gets a decent beer in, not that ice cold stuff you lot like to serve up ‘ere. You should take your brother and sister there, make it a family night out.” Olivia wouldn’t argue with that much, there was the family space out on the patio. They were both much too young to drink though, booze at least.

Julian knew a lot more about what was going on in Mystic Falls than most of the residents that called the town their home but there were still things that he didn’t know. He had grown up in Mystic Falls and he had learned about the supernatural a long time ago. He wasn’t like other werecreatures as members of his family weren’t born with a curse, instead they started shifting naturally when they reached maturity. He hadn’t had any warning before the night of his first shift but he knew that it wouldn’t have made a difference even if he had done. It wouldn’t have changed the outcome nor would it have changed the fact that he’d had to keep it from even his closest friends. Ever since Brady moved back to town Julian had been doing his best to be there for his best friend and the pack just like he had been doing his best to be there for his family. He knew that he couldn’t protect them from everything that was going on in the town and he definitely felt like he had failed Amy and Dec considering that they had both been taken and experimented on by the Dread Doctors but he knew that he wasn’t going to give up on trying to keep them safe as much as he could. “I guess that would depend on what you had to say,” Julian shrugged. He knew that he wasn’t going to worry his friend about every little thing but if it was something major then he knew that he would have to tell her. As Mal asked whether he ever got the urge to travel, Julian thought about it for a moment. “I almost took a year out to go travelling when I was in college but I changed my mind. A group of my friends went anyway but they were taken and only one of them survived. It kind of takes the fun out of it,” he shrugged. He had followed Brady and the others to Ecuador after learning that they had gone missing and he had done his best to find them but it hadn’t done any good. He hadn’t really had any desire to travel again after that. As Mal spoke again, Julian couldn’t help but laugh. “Mystic Falls isn’t that bad, it just takes a bit of getting used to,” he chuckled. That was perhaps a bit of an understatement but it was still the truth. As Mal asked about his siblings, Julian nodded. “You have no idea what you’re missing. They can be annoying at times but I wouldn’t be without them,” he admitted. “I don’t see two of my sisters so much but I see the twins a lot, we’re pretty close despite the age difference,” he added. Dec and Amy were the youngest members of the family and as such Julian had always been protective of them. That hadn’t changed as they got older and he wasn’t sure that it ever would. “You’re right about that,” he chuckled as Mal said that he was a traditionalist. “I might do that, it sounds like they would like it,” he nodded. “You said you’re an only child so do you go with friends or do you prefer to drink alone?” he asked, knowing that it wouldn’t hurt to get to know Mal a little better if he could. By now he was an expert at keeping shtum. You didn’t get to keep that immortal life for close to 200 years by blabbing about it to all and sundry, that was a straight road to a stake through the heart. After all that malarkey in San Francisco he had no intention of opening himself up to that again. The Doc was willing to do a lot, but when the pecking list had his old mate right at the top of it and you definitely down below, there weren’t much point in expecting him to bring you back. Mal couldn’t recited the warnings he’d been given about keeping their heads down in town. Don’t go flashing off what we’re doing, make sure you clean up after everything and no matter what you do, don’t let yourself get caught. Those were easy enough. He’d had plenty of practice after all.
Sweet talk and a little compulsion every now and then had kept everybody charmed at the hospital so far. The big boss lady might not have appreciated it as much, but she’d not handed him his notice yet either. He was good at what he did, was even better at what they didn’t know he was up to. Mal grinned now, letting out a low little chuckle at Julian’s comment. He winked at the bloke, all coy now. ”Think I’m better off keepin’ most of it to myself,” he quipped. Like he hadn’t been doing that anyway. They all only needed to know just enough for him to keep his cover up, the rest of it, well that was his to keep close to his chest.
As if he hadn’t had a hand in the second taking of friends of his, Mal grimaced. He set his fork down, clutching at his chest as though the news actually hurt. ”Ooof, I’d say. Some of them places out there are rough. You find the right ones though and it’s practically magical. You should try it some time, just with some careful research first, eh?” Not that it would’ve helped in some places. Come to Mystic Falls, never leave - or if you did, enjoy what little gifts the town had left ya with. If folks round here were lucky they’d end up cutting their ties at some point and the four of them would high tail it out of there anyway, like they always did in the end.
Popping the chips in his mouth, Mal hummed as he chewed. The trouble in Mystic Falls was exactly why they’d come there in the first place. There wasn’t like a little murder and mayhem for some cover when you really needed it. ”Guess I’ll have to stay put a while then.” At least until they were done. There were still experiments, even with the boss’ old mate back. People getting prodded and poked until something new emerged under that human seeming skin. ”Oh I think I might,” Mal snorted, at the thought of having to put up with a handful of brothers and sisters. ”Might not have any myself, but I spent enough time around people to realise they can drive you crazy. Big gap then?” He knew how big it was, especially since he’d had the pleasure of some of their company, although they wouldn’t have known him from the hole in the ground he’d dumped them in.
His questions seemed to be opening Julian up to tossing one back in his direction in turn. A little nosy maybe, but also a door cracked open … you know, just in case he had to go through it sometime. ”Definitely not the loner type,” he assured him, gesturing at him with the sandwich. ”Friends … coworkers sometimes … if you wanted some company to try the place out?” Another layer of cover, disguising that he’d used the establisments in town as hunting grounds more than once.
