It wasn’t his pack anymore. As much as it was clear he was still a part of it his were no longer the red eyes that led it.
Derek sat in the truck, pale eyes fixed on his own reflection in the rear view mirror. A human sea glass green, the same eyes that had stared back at him in the mirror for two and a half decades. He could barely meet them now. No matter how hard he pushed they wouldn’t flash that same blue or red or yellow, or any other damn colour they once had. Dark lashes fluttered as he looked away. They’d changed him somehow, the Dread Doctors and their supposed experiments. None of them had any clue how yet, or how he’d ended up an entire country away from where he’d been taken. Yet was the operative word though, he wasn’t going to stop digging until he had his answers here.
Blunt human nails scratched lightly against the steering wheel of the truck, catching slightly on the leather. Derek rolled his head against the rest, staring down at them. At least it was his own skin he was in for now. For a time he’d tested his limits but staring at somebody else in the mirror had been more disturbing than staring at a version of himself he didn’t entirely recognize. It had its uses if he needed it but he didn’t want it.
Drawing in a breath, he peeled his hand off of the steering wheel and rubbed at the back of his neck. This full moon he’d asked Scott and find some way back to a semblance of who he’d been. Who knew if it would actually work but it was the best chance of getting back to what he was at least. A werewolf. What the Hales were supposed to be.
At least Cora was still safe from all of this. He let the breath out slowly, feeling his ribs fall beneath the soft cotton of his Henley. She’d been through more than he had over the last couple of years and he’d give anything to make sure she didn’t have to again. The family had been knocked down too many times as it was.
In case though … Derek rocked forward, thumping a thumb against the volume knob for the stereo. In case anything happened she’d have the pack, they would stick by her, especially Scott and Stiles. It would take a zombie apocalypse to stop those two fighting for those around them and maybe even then they’d find some way. They’d fought for Erica and Boyd even when they hadn’t really had much reason to. For that he was still grateful. They hadn’t been able to save Erica in the end but that was the thing with this town, people who were lost were found here. Himself … and Erica … included.
He twisted in his seat as he caught sight of that tumble of blonde hair approaching. It had been tangled the first time he’d seen it, the curves Erica had used like a deadly weapon afterwards clad in a hospital gown. He’d seen the promise there, even if everybody else had been too blind to see it. Derek eased the car forward, letting it roll to a stop behind her as she stopped at one of the motel room doors. ”Erica…” Derek managed, his voice faintly hoarse as he rolled down the window. His throat worked as he watched her turn towards him. ”They said you were here … I wasn’t sure I believed it…” Stranger things had happened though, that voice had warned in his head. The ache that had been in his chest ever since her and Boyd had been killed loosened just a little.

It still seemed a little strange to Erica that there were so many people from Beacon Hills who were now living in Mystic Falls but it was something that she knew she could definitely get used to. She had moved around the country when she had finally felt that it was time for her to move on after she found her way back to the land of the living but the whole time she had travelled she had spent her time searching for the people that she cared about. As far as her family were concerned she had died years ago and she knew that she could never go back to them but she had at least had the chance to say goodbye to her younger brother and after paying a visit to her grave she had finally felt ready to leave that chapter of her life behind her. She had grown used to being on her own over the last year or so since she had found her way back but that had been out of necessity. She could have stayed with the vampire and witch that she had befriended but she had known that she’d needed to find Derek, Cora, Isaac and Boyd. She had heard that Scott and the others had all moved away from Beacon Hills as well but it had never occurred to her that they might have all ended up in the same place. Stiles was the person that she had bumped into first after she’d arrived in town and he and Scott had filled her in to an extent but it was Cora who had told her the most about what had happened while she’d been gone. The two guys had tried to sugar coat it, probably worried that she wouldn’t be able to handle it all, but she wasn’t the same fragile girl that she used to be before she was bitten and she wasn’t even the same girl that she had been before she’d died. She’d had to find a way back on her own since it had been clear to her that no one was going to do that for her and she had also learned to fend for herself during the time she had travelled on her own. She was stronger than she had ever been and she felt certain that she could handle whatever life threw at her. She had made herself a promise after learning that Boyd had died that she was going to bring him back no matter what and Cora had promised to help her so she had that to focus on when she wasn’t at school or trying to make ends meet and if she was honest she enjoyed keeping busy. She and Cora had been spending more and more time together lately and if Erica was honest she was enjoying it perhaps a bit more than she should. She was starting to think that she had feelings for the girl but she wasn’t ready to admit that just yet so instead she was trying to think about just about anything else. For now life was going on as normal, she had enrolled herself in the local high school just like she had in every town she had ended up in and she had started looking for more work so that she could continue to make ends meet. Money was always tight and she couldn’t afford anything better than a dingy motel room but she was doing the best she could with the hand that she had been dealt in life and she knew that that had to count for something. She knew that she could have asked one of the others if they had a spare room that she could use for a while and they probably would have agreed, especially Scott who had a habit of taking in strays considering that he had Isaac and a Malia living with him but she was too proud to do that just yet so she was doing her best to get by on her own the same way she always did. Even so it was bad enough that Cora had sought her out at the motel and she was just heading back to her room after what felt like a long day at school when a car came to a stop behind her and a familiar voice spoke her name. By the time she turned around a genuine smile was already etched across her face and she studied him carefully for a moment as he spoke again. “I could say the same for you. Cora told me what happened, I’m sorry,” she said sincerely before stepping forward and opening the car door for him. “Are you going to sit there all day or are you going to get out and give me a hug?” she challenged. She knew that Derek wasn’t really an emotional person but she could see that seeing her was affecting him and she knew that it would make her better to know that it was really him so she hoped that he would oblige. If there had been one rudder for the Hale family it had been his mom. Talia had been a force to reckon with, a leader powerful enough that other packs had come to her for advice. If it hadn’t been for Kate and her vendetta there was no way any of them would’ve been here now. Talia would’ve continued to hold the supernatural population of Beacon Hills in her grip, making sure that things there remained peaceful. Kate had stepped in though, hired people to slaughter his family and leave the door open for other things to step through.
Derek had rolled through in his head as he’d sat in the driver’s seat of his truck, studying a face that was his own but not as he remembered. He supposed it could’ve been worse, he could’ve been staring at somebody else entirely but beyond testing out the limits of his power he’d been loath to do that. Staring at the thing that wasn’t quite himself was bad enough.
He’d seen the way others had looked at him, the pity in their eyes he would’ve once smelt rolling off of them in waves. Derek knew he wouldn’t have to for much longer but there was still time before the full moon and there were still people to face before then who’d only ever known him as what he was. Erica had been dead before he’d given up his Alpha spark for Cora, dead while he’d gone back to just being a beta and still dead when the Doctors had changed him. Alive right on the cusp of him rising back up. Alpha, beta, omega, just as easy to fall between them as it was to rise.
Just as easy to feel the pain of the loss of it as he spotted her crossing the parking lot of the motel and pulled the truck up behind her. The name felt rusty in his throat as he rolled the window down. After everything that had happened he was happy to see her alive and here. Derek’s throat worked as Erica admitted that Cora had told her what had happened. There was sincerity in her voice but the ache was still there in his chest. ”It’s temporary,” he promised. At least they were all hoping it would prove that way. They wouldn’t know until Scott bit him. Derek rested one wrist on the wheel, the other on his lap, mustering up a smile that brightened as Erica asked if he was gonna get out of the car and hug her.
Yes. Sucking in a breath, Derek unbuckled his belt and slipped out. He had inches on her even now as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in. Softness was something he’d never demonstrated around his pack. That hadn’t been what they’d needed at the time, not with the threats they were facing but these were different times and pack was family as much as anything else. Derek rested his cheek on her hair for a moment. ”I guess you and Cora have been spending quite a bit of time together,” he drawled as he drew back. There was a half-smirk on his face, his pale eyes narrowing faintly at her. ”She didn’t tell me how you managed to get here though. I guess it was a story she wanted you to tell me yourself. You got time now?” His gaze flickered over the motel rooms behind her, his brow furrowing as he studied the room. The place wasn’t exactly the Ritz but then the places they’d stayed at while he and Cora had been looking for answers hadn’t exactly been either.

Erica had spent a year and a half travelling the country looking for the people she cared about and the truth was that she had been starting to wonder whether she was ever going to find them. She knew that she could have stayed with her friends back in Beacon Hills but everyone there knew that she had died and she had known that it would only be a matter of time before people realised who she was if she had stayed. She had spent some time at her friends’ place while she got used to being back and caught up on some of the things that she had missed and she had bid goodbye to her old life. Her parents had been a train wreck even before she had died. Her dad had never had time for her after he’d gotten involved with the step monster and she had grown tired of her mom’s sleazy boyfriend. The only person she had felt bad about leaving behind was her younger brother but her mom had at least been trying to give her brother the kind of life that Erica had missed out on so she knew that she just had to believe that he was going to be fine. There wasn’t any way that she could go home even if she wanted to anyway so moving on really was the only thing for it. She had travelled the country searching for them all before hearing rumours of a True Alpha in Mystic Falls and she had known that it had to be Scott. Since finding them all they had filled her in on what had happened to Boyd and Derek but she knew that she wasn’t going to give up on either of them. She was going to find a way to locate Boyd on the Other Side and bring him back and she knew that she would do anything she could for Derek after everything he had done for her too. She hadn’t left his pack because she had wanted to, she had left because she was terrified and hadn’t wanted to die but that was exactly what had happened anyway. Derek was family and he always would be and given that he had sought her out she hoped that he felt the same. “I wouldn’t expect any less from you,” Erica admitted. Derek had always seemed so sure of who and what he was when they met and if she was honest that was one of the things that she had always admired about him. He had never seemed to be scared of anything even when she was terrified and she knew that she wouldn’t have been able to get through those first few months as a werewolf without him. He had helped her more than she ever would have admitted back then but after losing her life she had learned to appreciate the lengths he had gone to for her. She knew that his motives for creating a pack hadn’t been good ones but she had found a sense of belonging among the pack that she had never felt before so the truth was that she didn’t regret joining them one bit. It was strange to think that Derek was now something else entirely but she believed him when he said that it was only temporary. “You have a plan for getting back what you lost?” she asked, hoping that the answer to that question would be yes. Asking Derek if he was going to get out of the car and give her a hug was probably a bold move considering that there had never been any of that kind of affection between them before but things had changed so much since they had last seen each other. Seeing Derek unbuckle his seatbelt and climb out of the car was enough to bring a smile to Erica’s face and she hugged him back tightly. “Yeah, we have,” she admitted, her cheeks flushing red slightly as he said that she and Cora had been spending quite a bit of time together. She still wasn’t entirely sure what was going on between them but she knew that she liked spending time with the other girl. Erica was about to answer Derek’s question when she caught the way his gaze flickered over to the motel. “It’s temporary,” she said, echoing his earlier words. “At least until I can afford somewhere better.” It wasn’t easy working and going to school at the same time but she was doing the best she could to get by and she knew that she really couldn’t do anymore than that. “To answer your question yes, I have time now,” she added. “We can get out of here if you like,” she offered, knowing that it would be easy enough for them to go somewhere else if that would be better. When there’d been a choice between giving up the power he’d snatched from his uncle or letting Cora die there really hadn’t been any choice. Having his sister back again after spending years believing that she’d died in the fire Kate had orchestrated meant a thousand times more than being an Alpha. Then it had seemed as though it was always possible to rise or fall, to find power again if he desperately wanted it, but there would be no way to get Cora back. Even knew Derek knew he’d done the right thing to sacrifice the Alpha spark for her. Things had changed after, he’d discovered that there were so much more to the supernatural world than he ever could’ve believed and people could be brought back. Still, there was no regret in what he’d done then, only in how open he’d left himself to things afterwards.
Unshielded by his power, still being screwed over by one of the people he’d foolishly believed that he loved, he’d been an easy target for those things that had changed him. Waking up in that tomb … not who he’d once been … it had thrown him for a loop even with Scott and Stiles’ help. Derek supposed that had been what had left him ripe for the picking by Alix. He hadn’t been in the right sort of headspace to realise how she was playing him at first and by the time they were both into it too deep it had always been too late to draw back. In the end he’d had no choice, he couldn’t carry on the way things had been going and she couldn’t either. He needed more answers than she’d been able to give and so he and Cora had left … only to find nothing again. That didn’t mean he wasn’t sure they ever would but there’d been a sense of coming back to town with his tail between his legs … until he’d heard that Erica was back. Things could and were changing.
Derek’s mouth tipped up wryly at one corner at her response. They all seemed more certain about it than he did for once. That was going to change though, when Scott bit him and he became who he’d been born to be again, it was all going to change. ”Cause I’m too stubborn not to make it happen?” he asked, his tone purposefully light as he glanced out of the windscreen. Stubborn wasn’t the word that would’ve been used for him when he’d decided to make a pack of his own in the way his uncle had once tried to. Arrogant, too damn sure of himself, rash … maybe all three … there had been reasons though, ones he’d twisted poorly, but reasons all the same. Licking lips suddenly gone dry, Derek swallowed and nodded as he looked back. ”We’ve put something together. If Scott’s bite works then all of this should be done. If it can change a nogitsune then we’ve got a chance.” The nogitsune hadn’t had its genetics scrambled by evil scientists doing God only knew what, but still, one species had become another. That left him hope.
There was always that. Derek had never hoped for this, not even after he’d come to a town far more screwed up than Beacon Hills but as he folded Erica into a hug, he realized he should’ve done. Death wasn’t permanent here. Drawing in a deep breath as he eased back from Erica Derek felt something inside of him relax. Dark brows rose as he saw the colour flush into Erica’s cheeks, a faint amusement tugging at his lips. He didn’t need the scent of what Erica was feeling to tell him that something was going on there. ”She didn’t tell me much,” he admitted but had a sense of why now. ”Just that you were back. I’m … glad the two of you have got each other to lean on.” Dark eyes rose to fix on the motel over Erica’s shoulder. The place was serviceable he guessed. ”There’s space at the apartment … if you wanted somewhere closer,” he told her as he gestured her back towards the truck. ”Coffee? Something to eat somewhere maybe?” Not a drink, although there’d been times lately when he’d leaned on the crutch of it.

Erica had spent such a long time searching for her friends but the truth was that she had been starting to wonder whether she would ever find them. Each lead she had ended up finding had led her to nothing more than a dead end but she had refused to give up hope. She had known after she found her way back from the Other Side that she didn’t belong in Beacon Hills any longer, everyone there knew that she had died and even though she probably could have convinced her mom that it was all just a hoax she had known that it wouldn’t be worth it. Sure she would have been able to watch her younger brother grow up but her relationship with her mom had been strained to say the least ever since her parents split up and she had never liked any of her mom’s boyfriends but her brother’s dad was the worst that she had come across. As for her dad, his new wife had made it clear that there was no place for her in their family even before she died so she had known that it wouldn’t do any good to tell anyone in town that she was still alive. Instead it had been better for her to move on and start over and even though she knew that she could have moved anywhere in the country and had known that it wouldn’t be the same having to start over on her own. Instead she had decided to track down Derek, Cora and the others and even now she knew that she had made the right decision. She had known that they were the only people who would be happy to see her and the only people who would understand what had really happened. It had been disheartening to arrive in Mystic Falls at last only to find that Derek and Cora weren’t there but Scott had kept his word by asking the two of them to return to town so she knew that she needed to thank them for that at least. She hadn’t planned on running into Stiles the morning after the full moon but he had filled her in about some of the things that had happened while she was gone and Scott had filled her in about others. It had come as a surprise to her when Cora had shown up at the motel but it seemed that Derek had had the same idea. She didn’t like either of them seeing the place that she lived in since it really wasn’t that great but considering that she was still at school and had to fit work around that it really was the best that she could do and she was trying not to let it get to her too much. She knew that she could have given in and asked one of the others if she could stay with them but most of them were at college now and she knew that it would feel weird if she accepted charity from them. Derek, Isaac, Boyd and Cora were the closest she had to family now but Boyd was dead and Isaac was living with Scott and his mom so she was making do the best she could. “You got that right,” Erica said, her smile genuine as she looked over at Derek. He had never been the kind of person who let anything get him down and she had always admired that about him. He had always been so strong and she knew that if there was anyone who could figure out how to deal with this then it would be him. “I hope it works, being a werewolf is in your blood,” she offered. She knew that it couldn’t be easy for him having to come to terms with being something else but he had a plan and she just had to hope that it would work. “I’m proof that the bite can do incredible things.” It had freed her from her epilepsy and that was exactly why she had wanted to go along with it in the first place. “She probably thought it would be better if we talked directly,” Erica nodded. The amusement on Derek’s face bothered her a little, she and Cora had been spending a bit of time together lately and Erica was starting to think that she might like the girl but Erica’s life was complicated right now so she knew that the last thing she needed was to add to that. “She’s been a great help,” Erica admitted. The truth was that she hadn’t stayed on the Other Side for too long but she had missed out on a lot as far as the gang was concerned and her education has been somewhat disjointed as well so she was doing her best to catch up with everything that she had missed. Erica’s eyes widened in surprise as Derek said there was space at the apartment if she wanted somewhere closer and she studied him carefully for a moment. “I wouldn’t want to intrude,” she said tentatively. She knew that it would be much better than the motel but the last thing she wanted was to get in their way. “That sounds great, I’m starving,” she nodded. DEREK HALE

What Mystic Falls took with one hand it seemed to give back with the other. It was a horror movie sort of give and take. It took life, blood soaking into the very ground the town was founded on, for a thousand years it had drunk it all in. Maybe, Derek thought, that was what allowed so many to come back here. By magic, by deals with the devil, so Stiles would have had them all believe, by other methods he doubted any of them could really quantify. Maybe digging too deeply into it would undo it all somehow. Looking at Erica now Derek knew that was the last thing he wanted to do. Bit by bit the pack he’d built for himself, in a way that was supposed to be above Peter’s twisted attempt to get the power that was never destined to be his, had been lost. Erica in the bank vault by the Alphas, Boyd on his own claws. Isaac going over to Scott. His own eyes no longer glowed red, they weren’t even the gold of his youth but if the town continued giving back in the same way maybe after the next full moon they would do just that. The man he saw looking back at him in the mirror the one he’d been before the Alpha pack had started to strip who he thought he was away.
Self-belief was the key to getting there. His had cracks running through it these days but as more of the pack started to gather here, returned to them, Derek could feel them healing. There was some belief there that the bite Scott had offered would do as it had done with the nogitsune, it would change the body, even with all that the Dread Doctors had done to it. The corners of his mouth twitched at Erica’s description of him, dimples appearing in the dark scruff of his beard. ”That makes two of us,” he confirmed. His teeth gritted, his jaw flexing slightly as she said that being a werewolf was in his blood. ”It was, if Scott can do what he’s suggested then it will be again.” If. He wasn’t about to put another crack through him thinking about that now but Erica brought up just what a transformation the bite had been for her. Derek’s pale eyes twitched over to her, his expression softening. ”It was always in you, it just took the bite to take away what was holding you back.” From the moment he’d seen her he’d known that there was far more to Erica than most gave her credit for and she’d proved it to him time and time again until Deucalion and his people had taken her.
He hadn’t realized how close Erica had been, not reuniting with Cora until after Erica had already been killed then, only getting the briefest of details from her when she’d told him that Erica was back. Derek made a sound low in his throat as amusement over it broke through a little. ”Probably, Scott was a little more forthcoming when he told me too.” His smile only grew a little as Erica explained what a great help Cora had been, his head bobbing. ”You’re not intruding,” he promised as he leaned over to push open the passenger side door for her to get in. ”I can promise you Cora would say exactly the same thing. The helping thing runs in the family, if you count Peter out of it.” Who knew where he was at the moment, probably still stirring up trouble back in Beacon Hills, it seemed to always happen around Peter, clinging to him like a bad smell. ”Coffee Bean, Grill, Diner?” he asked, slipping his seat belt back on. After a week in town you pretty much had the lay of the land when it came to restaurants, especially when burning the bacon was your base level of cooking skill.

Erica knew that it would have been easy for her to give up, let go completely and move on while she was trapped on the Other Side and if she was honest the thought actually had crossed her mind but deep down she knew that she was far too stubborn for that. She wasn’t the kind of person to take anything lying down so instead of giving in she had thought to get back to Earth where she belonged. It had come as a surprise for her to learn that the people she cared about had all left Beacon Hills not too long after she’d died and tracking then down after that hadn’t been easy but she had found a few of the people that she cared about in Mystic Falls so far and she hoped that it was only a matter of time before she found the others as well. She’d had to leave her younger brother behind in Beacon Hills but everyone back there knew that she had died so returning to her old home wasn’t an option. She knew that she could have tried playing it off as a hoax but she hadn’t wanted to do that. Instead she had visited her grave and made her peace with the fact that she couldn’t return to her old life. Her brother was the only reason why she would have stayed anyway but she had looked in on him and realised that her mom was doing a much better job of looking after him than she had been when Erica had died so she had known that he was in safe hands. Her mom had always been too busy with her boyfriend to notice what was really going on with Erica and her dad was too busy with the step-monster and her children so Erica knew that she was much better off on her own. It had taken her a while to find the others in Mystic Falls but it had definitely been worth the wait. With them she had a family and that was something that she hadn’t had for a long time. Derek had given her that when he had bitten her and she had joined his pack and she knew that she had made a mistake by letting her fear get the better of her to the point that she had decided to leave his pack but she knew that she wasn’t going to make that same mistake again. “You didn’t really think that a little thing like dying was going to keep me down, did you?” she asked, a playful smile working its way across her face as she looked over at him. The truth was that he had been awful but Erica had never been good at letting people know how difficult things were for her so she always put up a front. At least now she’d had a couple of years to get her head around what had happened and move on from it so she knew that she was in a much better place than she otherwise could have been. “It will work, I know it will. It has to,” Erica nodded, already making up her mind that she was going to be there for him if he would let her be. Derek didn’t deserve what had been done to him and she wanted nothing more than for him to be able to get back to the way he used to be. “Maybe but you still took a chance on me and I’ll never forget that,” she assured him. She had waivered in her loyalty to Derek once before but she knew better than to do that again. He had only ever tried to look out for her and she had forgotten that for a while but after she’d found her way back she’d had a long time to think about it and she knew that he had done all he could. “I might have mentioned you once or twice while we were locked in the vault so Cora probably wanted to make sure we had this chance to talk,” Erica admitted with a shrug. It was still a little bittersweet being back without Boyd but she knew that she wasn’t going to give up until he was back where he belonged too. Opening the passenger door, Cora climbed into the car and felt a smile work its way across her face at Derek’s next words. “If you’re sure then I’d love to but I don’t expect the two of you to pay for everything for me, I’ll pay my way,” she insisted, knowing that she wasn’t going to let herself be a burden on them. Closing the door behind her she fastened her seatbelt before letting her expression turn thoughtful for a moment. “The Grill. It might be a bit more crowded but they do the best burgers in town and you’ll be able to have a stronger drink if you want one.” It still wasn’t an option for her considering she was underage but she knew that it might make things a bit better for Derek especially since she’d already dropped one bombshell on him today. Boyd had just wanted to be more than he had been, he’d wanted to be noticed, to have a friend, the bite had given him that and so much more … until he’d taken it from him. Isaac had wanted freedom from his father, Derek knew he hadn’t really been the one to give Isaac that, but he’d given him a pack, a family for a time. Erica … Erica had wanted an escape from the disease that hadn’t just ravaged her brain. She hadn’t been a high school pariah anymore. In fact, she’d reeked of confidence. That he was willing to take credit for. Erica had found a level of control the others hadn’t been able to achieve at the time, she’d pushed at him. The memory of it now had Derek’s mouth curving faintly. It hadn’t stopped him from pushing back for her own sake, but out of them all Erica had been willing to push the hardest. In the end that had cost her her life. Derek’s throat worked as nostalgia was replaced by that ache in his chest. She’d fought to get out of that vault and in the end she was the only one who hadn’t made it out of there.
If any of them were likely to have found a way back from the other side though, it would’ve been Erica. Smart, watchful, creative, she’d have taken a chance and obviously she had. That meant the others still had a chance and the thought of it made his throat ache even as he managed to smile and shake his head. ”I shouldn’t have done,” he admitted. ”If anybody was ever gonna give Peter a run for his money, it was you.” Erica would’ve likely had Peter in his place in an instant and kept him from screwing up so badly that he’d ended up in a tomb here in Mystic Falls, something else, something he still wasn’t used to. If the bite changed him back then he wouldn’t have to get used to it. Derek made a low sound at Erica’s assurances, bobbing his head slowly. There was far too much wiggle room in ‘has to’ for his liking. He’d never been one for physical displays of affection to his pack but Derek slanted a smile at Erica. ”Trust me, it did just as much for me as it did you. It’s still doing that.” The pack had his back, even if it included the constant irritation of Stiles. God, Stilinski had probably had to pick his jaw up off the floor when he’d found Erica.
Winging a dark brow, Derek faint smile threatened to turn into a smirk. ”Just once or twice?” he asked. Cora had known that he had turned Erica, his little sister, in her infinite wisdom, just like Scott, had wanted to give him this. They were both wise beyond their years. All of them were. ”Have you ever known me not to be sure about something like this?” he asked. Derek went to argue about payment, that hadn’t been the reason why he’d offered but one glance at Erica as she was closing the door and he ducked his head slightly instead, letting out a long breath. ”You can help with the bills, the cooking too.” That had always been a sticking point, something Cora absolutely wouldn’t have denied, not with the kitchen likely still smelling of burnt bacon. Derek pulled out of the motel’s parking lot, heading towards the square. ”To take the edge off of the shock of seeing you back?” he asked, glancing at her, his lips curved. ”I’m good with the Grill. Steaks are just as good as the burgers there. So where are you working?” It felt like an easier question to ask than how are you this good with coming back from the dead.

Erica knew that she could have gone anywhere after she found her way back from the Other Side and she would be lying if she said that she hadn’t thought about it. She could have completely started over and built a new life for herself away from the supernatural drama and everything that being a werewolf brought with it but she had chosen to accept the bite from Derek when he had offered it and even though she hadn’t known everything that would come with it, it still wasn’t a decision that she regretted. Before she became a werewolf she had been plagued by epilepsy and her condition had dictated so many different aspects of her life. Now she was free from it and while it was true that she had died at the hands of a sadistic Alpha werewolf it was also true that she had found her way back from the dead so she knew better than to let what had happened stop her from living her life the way she wanted to. She had known that there was no way that she could have returned to her family after everything that happened and if she was honest she hadn’t felt like she had belonged with either of her parents for a long time before she’d died anyway. Her dad had remarried and had been happy with his new family while her mom had moved her sleazy boyfriend into their home and had given birth to his son. Erica had been the outsider in each of those families but it wasn’t like that with Derek and the others. With them she had found a true family and she had known that she’d had to return to them. She could have given up the search long before now but she had refused to do that and now she was glad about that. Not only had she been reunited with Cora but now Derek had found her again too even if she was ashamed that he had seen where she had been living since she had arrived in town. The last time she had seen Derek it hadn’t gone so well as that was when she had told him that she and Boyd were leaving to go searching for a pack that wasn’t going to end up getting them killed. It wasn’t her finest moment but she had felt terrified that she was going to end up dying if she stuck around but that was exactly what had ended up happening anyway. As Derek said that if anybody was ever going to give Peter a run for his money it was her she couldn’t stop a sarcastic smile from working its way across her face. “I’d rather not be compared to your uncle if it’s all the same to you. He’s psychotic, I’m just a little crazy,” she said, her tone making it clear that she was only joking. As Derek spoke again, Erica found herself studying him carefully for a moment. “You wanted a pack but you gave me more than that, you gave me a family,” Erica shrugged. It was something that she had needed more than she had realised with how things were at home but she hadn’t truly appreciated that back then, not like she did now. “You know that Scott and Stiles both offered me a place in the pack? In Stiles’ case it was after his eyes popped back in his head after he found me the morning after the full moon anyway. It’s like they’ve forgotten about everything that I did,” she mused, more to herself than to Derek. The offer had taken her by surprise but if she was honest it was one that right now she didn’t feel like she deserved so she wasn’t sure that she could take them up on it. As Derek spoke again she couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t go getting a big head,” she warned, a smirk forming on her own face as she climbed into the car before her expression fell as he asked if she had ever known him not to be sure about something like asking her to move in. “I haven’t but it’s not like I deserve your help. I let my fear get the better of me and I abandoned you after everything that you did for me.” She had walked out on the only real family that she’d had and it was something that she knew that she was always going to regret. If they were really going to do this she knew that there had to be some ground rules, though, and she was quick to tell Derek that she would pay her own way. She had never liked having to depend on anyone else so it was important to her that she pulled her own weight with everything as much as she could. “You mean so you’ll stop burning the bacon? You’re on,” she nodded, knowing that she didn’t want to be subjected to his cooking again if she could help it. “You can’t tell me you haven’t thought about it,” she smirked, knowing that the thought of having a stronger drink had probably crossed his mind at least once or twice so far. “Great,” she nodded as Derek agreed to heading to the Grill. Letting her gaze drift to the view passing by the window as he drove, Erica shrugged as he asked where she was working. “Wherever I can right now. I’ve been picking up a few shifts at the Diner and the cinema and I’ve been doing some admin work at one of the offices in town. The pay isn’t great but it’s better than nothing. I’m looking for something a bit more stable though,” she explained, knowing that she was going to have to see if there were any jobs going at the Grill while they were there. DEREK HALE

In his thirst for power after he’d been burned Peter had come close to destroying the Hale now. For generations his family had kept the peace in Beacon Hills, Talia a force enough to be reckoned with that even the Deucalion had backed off and let them be after he had been blinded by Gerard Argent. With Talia’s death there’d been a vacuum, big enough that without anyone to stop him Peter had half torn the town apart. It should’ve been a surprise that anybody had trusted him to take the bite from him afterwards. Boyd had though, Isaac and Erica too. That trust had almost been the doom of all of them but with Scott’s help … and Peter’s, he’d found his way out of it. At least for a while. The trust put in a Hale had been back, albeit for a short time.
As Erica joked about him not comparing her and Peter, Derek swallowed hard. Peter had come through for a time when the nogitsune was loose but trust in his Uncle was never anything that would come easy. In fact, he had wondered whether or not Peter had a role in him being taken. It would’ve been a vile echo of what had happened to Alix, an uncle handing over their own blood. Derek nodded, his lips twitching faintly in response until Erica told him he’d given her a family. ”A family that includes Peter,” he said with grim humour. ”He’s a package deal. Like you all were.” Derek cleared his throat at the thought. The fact that they were more than just betas had made the devastation at having Boyd’s blood on his own hands far worse. He’d had to claw his way back after that and just as he had, reuniting with Cora again, he’d been taken. Scott and Stiles had been the ones to find him in the end, something Stiles was bound to never let him forget.
Derek made a low sound in his throat. ”That doesn’t surprise me.” Although he snorted at the image of Stiles when he’d found Erica. ”Makes me surprised he didn’t swallow his tongue.” Dark brows beetled as he shook his head. Derek shifted in his seat, pale eyes fixing on Erica. ”People never forget but they forgive and that’s way more important.” They’d forgiven him too, given him a place that maybe he hadn’t deserved. Now Scott was his own hope for getting back to who he had been.
Thanks to the people around him he’d get there, the chances of it were only greater for Erica’s presence here. Derek’s smirk grew as he leaned back in the driver’s seat. ”I’m pretty sure you won’t let that happen.” His pack had always tempered him in a way that he’d needed. The smirk was gone in an instant as Erica started to question how much she deserved his help, his dark brows beetled as he reached out to nudge a fist into her arm. ”No!” he shot at her sharply. ”You don’t get to think like that. We all let our fear get to us at times, even Scott. Like you said we’re not just pack, we’re family and family forgives that shit. You and Boyd needed something I wasn’t giving you, that failure was on me, not you.” He’d let what was happening go to his head and he’d screwed up.
What had happened after was a wake up call, one that had kept coming. Trying to listen to it he was putting what had happened behind him, moving on one step at a time. The bite was coming, so was a home here with his sister, with the pack. Derek winced faintly as he started in the direction of the square. ”Cora told you about that?” he asked, his gaze cutting sideways. ”It was edible in the end.” Huffing out a breath, Derek shook his head slowly as he drove. ”Too often,” he admitted dryly, not that it affected him much more than it had before. ”We’ll get you a Shirley Temple, just so you’re not left out.” Not one of them had hit the legal drinking age yet after all. Derek kept an eye on Erica out of the corner of his eye as she admitted where she’d been picking up work. ”Maybe Scott can help there. He’s working for a vet in town. Have you thought about college?” Most of the pack was at Whitmore now, time marching on no matter what else was happening.

Erica had spent a long time searching for everyone but the truth was that she hadn’t really thought too much about what she would do when she actually did track them down. She had wanted to make sure that Derek, Cora, Isaac and Boyd were all ok but other than that she hadn’t really had much of an idea. She had enrolled in school everywhere she ended up so that she wouldn’t fall behind and might stand a chance at actually graduating but she knew that college was out of the question. She had very little money which was why she was staying at the motel and the money that she was able to earn had to go towards paying for her room and making sure that she had enough to eat. It wasn’t easy but she was doing the best she could and she knew that she couldn’t do any more than that. She was ashamed of the fact that Derek had seen where she was staying but he had already gone above and beyond for her by getting her out of there and she knew that he was right when he said that their family included Peter. “Fine but if he tries to hurt any of you, I’ll kill him,” she warned. She didn’t trust Peter as far as she could throw him and something told her that that wasn’t going to change any time soon. He only ever seemed to be out for himself no matter who might get hurt in the process and she knew that she wouldn’t be able to stand by and let him hurt the people that she cared about now that she had finally found them. Derek’s amusement at the thought of Stiles being the one to find her after the full moon was enough to bring a smile to Erica’s face and she couldn’t help but laugh. “I think he nearly did,” she admitted. She definitely wasn’t the one that he had expected to find out there but it had been an interesting way for him to find out that she was alive again it had to be said. “Hopefully they’ll forgive me. I know how much they mean to you so I’ll do my best to play nice and earn their trust,” she assured him. If she was honest they meant a lot to her as well but that wasn’t something that she was willing to admit just yet. She knew that she wanted things to be different this time around, though, so she knew that she would do her best to earn their trust even if that was sure to take time. She had found her family while she was in Mystic Falls and she knew that she wasn’t going to want to leave them anytime soon. “Of course I won’t,” Erica said, a smirk forming on her face to match Derek’s as he said he was sure that she wouldn’t let it go to his head. She had always done her best to keep him grounded and he had done the same for her and the others. They were her family and that was why she hated the fact that she had let her fear get the better of her but she knew better than to let that happen again. “Hey!” she protested as Derek nudged her arm. “It wasn’t on you, my family situation was awful and you gave me a safe place I could call home but with everything that was going on with the Argents and Jackson I was worried that we were all going to die and I talked Boyd into leaving with me. Ironic that leaving was what got me killed, if I’d stayed then things might have been different,” she shrugged. She had no way of knowing whether staying would have made a difference, after all she could have died anyway, but being there had given her the chance to bond with Cora and that wasn’t something that she was ever going to regret no matter what the outcome was. If she was honest she was glad for the chance to change the subject and she nodded as he asked if Cora had told her about him burning the bacon. “Yep. I always knew there was a reason why you never tried to cook for us,” she teased. “I don’t believe that for a minute,” she added as he said that it was edible in the end. “Thanks,” she laughed as Derek said that she could have a Shirley Temple so she didn’t feel left out. “Shame I can’t join you in having something stronger,” she shrugged. She was still underage, though, so she knew that it wasn’t an option at least not while they were in a public place. “I might have to have a word with him,” she said thoughtfully before shaking her head as Derek asked if she had thought about college and turning her attention to the world passing by outside. “You’ve seen where I’ve been staying. I can’t afford a decent place to live let alone college and my grades aren’t good enough to get a scholarship so it isn’t on the cards for me,” she explained. “I’ll figure something else out.”DEREK HALE

Building a pack of his own had never just been about power. He wasn’t his uncle, right up until the last moment in the fight that had given him Alpha status he hadn’t known what he was going to do. It was supposed to be about giving Scott the cure he’d wanted. Peter had goaded him in the end though and in that one bloody moment he’d done it. After that it had been about building a pack the way Peter should’ve done, giving people a chance, changing their lives by offering them the bite. It hadn’t gone that way in the end and Derek knew that one day he’d go to his grave regretting that, even if the world was giving him another chance now. He had given all of that power away to bring Cora back from the brink and given the choice, in the same circumstances he would do it again. The power didn’t mean anything in comparison to family.
Erica had become a part of that family and her death had torn at a heart already shredded by what had happened to his blood family. Peter hadn’t been involved in that, it had all been on Deucalion and his people but that didn’t ease the bitterness towards his uncle. Of course, Peter had managed to find his way here before Erica had appeared. He wasn’t about to call his presence a happy accident but Derek knew that Peter wasn’t going to make the truth easy. His face had been settling into granite lines at the thought but Erica’s joking had saved it to from freezing solid, the stony lines of it cracking. Derek tugged his hands from his pocket, held them up. ”Kill away at that point, I’ll even hold your coat.” Out of all of those he’d turned Cora would be the most likely to manage it too. The fiercest of the three, the one who’d battled her way back even from beyond the grave.
Stiles had probably been shocked at her appearance too, although he was willing to lay money on the fact that Erica’s resurrection had stunned him far less than the sight of a naked girl. Derek shook his head, that faint snort of humour trailing off into a chuckle. ”Wouldn’t have surprised me.” It might’ve been the same on the night that Stiles had broken into his apartment, apart from the fact that he hadn’t given him the chance to look at Alix much that way, driving him out into the hallway with a growl of frustration and anger rumbling threateningly in his throat. Derek’s dark brows rose, his pale eyes lifting to meet hers. ”I think you’ll find they surprise you,” he managed hoarsely. ”We’ve been through a lot since … things have changed.” And yeah, it would mean something. If it wasn’t for Scott and … OK, Stiles too … he might still have been in that tomb, the thing he’d become rotting away in the dark.
A low rumble of amusement sounded in Derek’s throat as Erica shot a smirk back at him. He knew she wouldn’t let him get away with half of the things he’d sunk himself into lately. Another person here to call him on it all and haul him back from that crumbling edge. Just as he would call her on it in return. As Erica’s own thoughts carried her towards an edge, he was nudging her. Derek’s lips were set in a thin line as he looked at her, his black brows a heavy slash above. ”It was on all of us. I should’ve stopped both of you. There were a dozen things any of us could’ve done.” In the middle of everything they hadn’t but there was no turning the clock back to change it now. They had another chance and he was going to take it. Even if everything beyond the immediate was still some amorphous shape. Concentrate on the little things, let everything else fall into place. He tried to remind himself of that as they slipped into safer territory. Looking back to the road Derek grimaced. ”You wanna try cooking the next time?” he asked, knowing it couldn’t be worse. He shook his head, his mouth curling. ”A couple more years, you can. You’re smart, if you want to make it there, you will. In the mean time … you’ve got a place … somewhere better than a motel room.” A home. And a family in the pack. Trusting that the others would feel the same, Derek pulled into the curb outside the Grill.

Being stuck on the Other Side had proved to be incredibly dull and lonely and even though Erica had made a lot of mistakes before she died she had still wanted nothing more than to get back to the people who had become family to her. Derek had given her a way to stop her epilepsy and being with him, Isaac and Boyd had given her the first real sense of a home that she’d had since her parents split up. Her mom’s new boyfriend had made living at home awful and her dad’s new wife and step-daughters had made it clear that she wasn’t welcome with them either. The only good thing she’d had was her younger half brother Harley but she knew that he wouldn’t even remember her. He was only young when she’d died but after she had found her way back from the Other Side she had still managed to say goodbye to him before leaving Mystic Falls behind for good. Everyone aside from him that had meant something to her had already left Beacon Hills and even though Erica knew that she could have started over just about anywhere and stayed out of the supernatural drama as much as possible she had still found herself craving companionship. She had met a few people who had made an impression on her along the way but the people she had wanted to see more than anyone else were Derek, Cora, Boyd and Isaac. They were the family that she had chosen and she still felt guilty about running out on them the first time but she knew that she wasn’t going to do that again. Erica had grown used to seeing Derek’s expression turn deathly serious like it was on the verge of doing now but her words had him holding his hands up and Erica couldn’t stop a smile from forming on her face at his words. “I’ll hold you to that,” Erica assured him even though she hoped that it wouldn’t come to that. As much as she disliked Peter he was one of the few Hales left and Erica knew that she didn’t really want Derek or Cora to go through the pain of losing someone else, even someone like him. She would protect them with everything that she had and if it came down to it then she knew that she would fight to protect Peter for them too although she knew that she would never admit that out loud. Derek’s next words were enough to have Erica studying him carefully for a moment. “Stiles said the same thing. He told me about what happened to Allison and why you all came here in the first place,” she explained. She had ended up getting the impression that there were other things that he had wanted to tell her too but he had held back probably so that he wouldn’t overwhelm her. As much as she hated the hunter she knew how much Scott had loved her once and she had meant a lot to the others as well so the truth was that Erica couldn’t blame them for moving across the country to try and help her. “You’re all ok now though, aren’t you?” she asked, knowing that if there was anyone that she could trust to give her a straight answer then it was Derek. One thing Erica had never liked was when Derek tended to get lost in his own head. Whenever that happened she always tried to snap him out of it and he did the same for her. Needless to say that was something that she had missed and as he nudged her she knew that now was one of those times. “Maybe. One thing I know for sure is that I’m not going to make those same mistakes again and I’m going to find a way to get Boyd back too.” She hadn’t seen him at all while she was on the Other Side but she knew that she wasn’t going to stop until he was back there he belonged. As Derek asked if she wanted to try cooking next time, Erica felt a smirk form on her face. “I couldn’t do any worse than you and I might have picked up a few things while I was travelling,” she shrugged, knowing that she wouldn’t be opposed to the idea. Derek’s next words had Erica’s smirk turning into a genuine smile as she glanced across at him. “That means more to me than you know,” she said sincerely, glad that she wasn’t going to have to worry about working every shift she could now just to afford the awful motel room and enough food and other things to keep her going as well. He’d gotten used to not being accountable to anybody. After Laura had been killed and he was on his own in Mystic Falls except for the kids poking their nose into what was going on and his comatose uncle who had been a blank wall for him to throw thoughts at without an ounce of awareness that Peter had healed himself and fallen neck deep into the insane ravings pain had left swimming around in his skull, there wasn’t anybody to explain himself to. Derek Hale, lone wolf, out of his depth, although he wouldn’t have admitted it. When Peter had been gone and that Alpha power had been a dark voice in the back of his own head his own pack, Scott, Stiles, had all forced him out of that isolation. He was doing it for them, because of them. It was what had kept him holding on after all of that had been stripped away and he’d been dragged here, changed, left hollow, they were the ones who’d kept him putting one foot in front of another. Not Peter, not even Cora at that point … the pack.
If there was anybody in this town to keep Peter in line now he was here … it was the pack. Peter might hover around the edges of it, act like Confucius when the rest of them were floundering around in the dark but he’d seen his uncle’s other side, knew better than to put his faith in him now. The expectation that a blade would be slipped between his ribs Caesar style in the end always there. Erica knew it too. Derek’s mouth twitched faintly as she smiled. A shared moment of dark humour that neither would let become true. He nodded slowly, letting his hands fall back down again, arms folding over his chest. His lips thinned as he pressed them together. Stiles had obviously run his mouth when he’d found Erica again, undoubtedly unable to get a hold of himself and bite back the word vomit. ”I should’ve known he’d catch you up. Did he tell you how I got here?” It hadn’t been with the others. When they’d left he’d stayed behind, for hours … days … he didn’t know, it had all been lost to that fog that wouldn’t lift from his memory. He hadn’t meant to let it out but the bitterness he still felt bubbled out of him as he looked at Erica and shook his head. ”Most of us. There are still some things that need to be sorted out - especially with me.” He could’ve demonstrated here, let his face change the way it had done do many other times but Derek held back. Not now.
Fingers tight on the wheel Derek had headed for the centre of town, the square around where everybody’d lives seemed to be set. It was as picturesque as the woods that surrounded the place but less stained with the blood that seemed to be spilled here on an almost daily basis. In some way it would’ve felt wrong to stain it again with his regrets, what had happened with Alix just a dozen yards away from the Grill already etched deep in his mind. His eyes ticked to the rear view as the thought crept in. He wanted to shake his head, to tell Erica not to get her hopes up but this town didn’t work like anywhere else he knew. ”You’re sure he’s on the other side like you were?” he asked, that rough touch to his voice. ”If you find peace over there …” Then you were gone but Boyd had been a fighter, if there’d been any thought it his head that there was some way back he would’ve taken it. Until they knew, had answers about anything, all he could do was keep putting one foot in front of another … for himself, for them. ”Hey!” he shot back, feigning hurt. ”I’m not that bad. I just … need a little practice. You wanna take over the kitchen, feel free though.” His throat worked as he glanced sidelong at Erica. ”You’re family,” he told her. You did what you could for family, blood or not. ”You wanna pick your things up from your room later?” After they’d eaten. Derek pulled up outside of the Grill, squinting through the windshield to study the faces of those behind that plate glass.
