Deaton’s clinic back home had been lined with mountain ash, something that had been almost palpable even from the alley outside. Either Mystic Falls hadn’t picked up on that little trick or the vet here didn’t know she had anything to worry about from the supernatural community that existed beneath all of this normality.
Derek eyed the place from the hood of his truck, leaning back against it as he waited for Scott to emerge from the place. He’d seen him moving around inside a few minutes ago, a flash of red hair too. The vet he supposed, or a nurse. This was one part of life in Mystic Falls he hadn’t bothered to dig around in after Scott and Stiles had found him in that tomb out in the woods. He hadn’t needed to. Scott had made it clear that Danny was their druid in town, Deaton being … elsewhere.
A shiver started between his shoulder blades again, making Derek shrug his shoulders under the cover of his leather jacket. Maybe Deaton was the wise one if he’d decided to cut and run. Things here weren’t any easier than back home, in fact there was a chance they were worse. At least there they’d always managed to figure out the source of a problem pretty rapidly. Whatever was happening here with the disappearances and changes had been going on for months now. He and Cora had headed out of town to try and see if they could get answers and instead of finding them there were only more questions instead.
Derek hung his head slightly, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his jackets as he watched Scott emerge behind the glass again. Stiles had undoubtedly been sticking his nose into what was going on the entire time they were gone but going straight to him would open up the sort of can of worms he’d be tempted to throw through a window rather than actually pick through. Scott was going to be the next best thing when it came to news and honestly … he owed him after disappearing almost without word again. The two of them had come a long way since Peter had lost his mind and decided to try and turn the teens of Mystic Falls into his own little beta pack. They all had.
As the door clattered open Derek got to his feet. His hands were still deep in the pockets of his leather jacket, tugging downstairs, straining the seams a little. There’d been a veneer of grim to his features but as he met Scott’s eye Derek felt it crack just a little bit. He lifted his chin towards the clinic, lips curving into a congenial smile as he caught the red head looking out at the pair of them. Derek tugged a hand from his pocket, lifting it in half greeting at the woman. She stared for a moment long before doing the same and heading back inside. ”A little different to Deaton?” he asked by way of greeting.
Swallowing, Derek settled back against the front of the truck, his long legs stretched out in front of him. There was a knot still in the pit of his stomach, a feeling like he hadn’t been right in his own skin for months and in a way it was the truth. ”I wanted to let you know we were back in town myself instead of you hearing it from someone else,” he admitted. ”How’ve things been while we were gone?” AKA how many other people had mysteriously managed to disappear and turn up again days later, no longer who they were. Derek suspected he didn’t really want to know the answer to that little question.

Scott would be the first to admit that his life had been so much easier before he was bitten by Peter and thrown headfirst into the supernatural world and for a long time he had wanted nothing more than to go back to the way he used to me. Sure he had been invisible to most people but he hadn’t had to fight for his life every other week and that was something that he had grown to miss. Over time he had come to realise that the life he had now wasn’t all bad, though, and a lot of that was thanks to Derek. The guy could have easily left him on his own to figure it all out but he hadn’t, he had taken Scott under his wing and showed him that it was possible to be a werewolf and still stay true to himself and Scott knew that he owed him big time for that. With Derek and Stiles on his side he had quickly learned that he could do more than he had ever thought himself capable of and as time went on that group had grown. No longer did he just have Stiles that he could count on, now he had brothers in Stiles, Derek, Isaac and Liam and he had more extended family than he could count. After everything they had been through together his friends were so much more to him than that now and even though they had faced a lot of awful things along the way they had always come through it in the end and he had learned the hard way just how important it was to lean on his friends when he needed them. They had been there for him in more ways than any of them knew and Scott knew that if he could be there for all of them even half as much then he would be glad. He hadn’t quite known what they would find when they all moved to Mystic Falls but the truth was that the town was just like Beacon Hills, if not worse. There always seemed to be something going on in the town and whenever things finally seemed to settle down he could never shake the feeling that it was just the calm before the storm. Riley had been killed in the ritual to free Klaus’ werewolf side, Scott himself had almost died after being attacked by a group of werewolves that were loyal to Klaus, Hayden and Derek had both been kidnapped and turned into something else entirely and now there was a threat coming for Danny that they had yet to identify. It seemed to be one thing after another but even so Mystic Falls was home to all of them now and he knew that no matter what came their way they would figure it out together the same way they always did. Some good had happened in the town too, they had managed to free Allison from the demon that had been possessing her and Scott had been reunited with Bonnie. Erica had also found them while they were in the town and from what he had called Cora and Derek to let them know that they needed to get back to Mystic Falls as soon as they could although he hadn’t told them why. They still weren’t any closer to figuring out who had taken Derek or Hayden but he knew that both Derek and Cora would want to know about Erica so it had seemed like the best way. He definitely hadn’t expected to spot a familiar truck as he came out of work, however, and he couldn’t stop his smile from working its way across his face as he made his way over to the truck after saying goodnight to his boss. “Yeah, you could say that,” he nodded. “She’s a great boss though, much better than the last one I had here,” he admitted. He had hated that guy and it had come as such a relief when Rhiannon had taken over. “I appreciate it, thanks,” he said sincerely. “You got my message?” he asked even though he was pretty sure that it couldn’t be a coincidence that Derek was back now after he had asked them to return. “Same old. People are still disappearing and turning up different and others are still dying. I don’t think that will ever change about Mystic Falls,” he admitted with a shrug. “There’s something you should know, something good,” he added, knowing that this at least should come as good news to Derek. “Erica is alive and she’s here in town.”DEREK HALE

As a teenager he’d been bordering on arrogant. Confident in who he was as a werewolf, as a Hale, Derek knew he’d strutted around Mystic Falls High like he’d half owned the place, the basketball in his hands a continual dull thud that was like his version of a peacock’s tail – his way of displaying. Paige had changed that, what he’d done when Peter’s suggestions had gotten into his head, what Ennis had done, what he’d been forced to do afterwards, it had shattered that confidence. Time and time again afterwards he’d gotten his feet back under him again, only to have them knocked out from under him. Never as bad as the first time but his family when Kate had set the fire, Erica, Boyd at his own hands. Every time he started to come back from it something else had happened but at the very least he’d been a werewolf through it all. Until those things had gotten their hands on him. Derek knew there had to be a way out of it but it had felt like everything he’d known about himself was suddenly shaken. Leaving with Cora had been the only way he could think of to try and piece things together and get his life back.
That had been a failure. Even with what he’d learned about the Dread Doctors from Alix and Braeden’s help on the road there were no clear cut answers. Scott calling them on the road, it gave them an excuse to get back to Mystic Falls. If they weren’t gonna find away through this with clear cut answers to their questions then the only way out was the bite. Derek lifted a hand as he waited for Scott to emerge from the clinic, squeezing at one shoulder, feeling the tight muscles protest beneath his skin. There was a chance it wouldn’t take, there was always a chance but that was better than what they had now at least.
Seeing Scott emerge from the clinic Derek straightened up, a little relief slithering through the pit of his stomach as the mood he’d slumped into began to crack. Scott had been a kid when all of this had happened but he’d been the one who’d gotten them through it all. He saw Scott return his smile, watched past the alpha’s shoulder as the red head slipped deeper into the clinic and out of sight. ”Makes it easier,” he said lightly. ”I guess nobody’s gonna live up to Deaton but as long as they’re not the worst … it’s easier.” Especially since they had so much on their hands continually. He didn’t ask if the woman was aware of what either of them were, in Mystic Falls, just like Beacon Hills, you didn’t take the lid off that can of worms if you could help it.
Derek drew in a breath, slipping his hands back into the pockets of his leather jacket. He curled his fingers into fists, pulling the jacket down tight enough that he could feel the strain of it over his shoulders. His lips were pressed tight as he nodded to Scott. ”We did. Took us a few days to get back on the road.” If there’d been any chance that they were actually on the trail of something it might’ve bene longer. There was a faint bit of humour when he finally managed to huff out a breath. ”The latter, nope, but if we ever manage to track down the doctors behind this we might be able to stop the former.” They were striking out at that at every step though. Derek’s dark brows beetled slightly as Scott dangled something positive in front of him. ”What?” he breathed. Pushing his way to his feet, Derek tugged a hand free to drag it down his face as he stared at Scott. ”Erica’s alive? How?” The Alpha pack had killed her when she’d tried to fight back against what was being done. Her and Boyd had both died and their hands.

Leaving Beacon Hills behind was a big step and Scott would be lying if he said that there weren’t still times when he found himself worrying about what was going on back there but he had been back a few times since they’d left and the town was still standing so he knew that it couldn’t be that bad. Deaton was still in Beacon Hills anyway and Scott had made it clear to him that if he ever needed anything all he had to do was call and they would head back to help out but so far he hadn’t received such a call and he could only assume that everything was going better than it had done while they were there. Trouble seemed to have followed Scott and his friends around and no matter how hard they’d tried to avoid it they just couldn’t seem to catch a break. Mystic Falls wasn’t that different, they always seemed to get themselves into trouble somehow while they were there too but at least this time they weren’t the only ones trying to protect the town, there were others who knew about the supernatural world and were a part of it themselves who wanted to protect Mystic Falls just as much as they did. That was something that Scott hadn’t counted on when he and the others had moved there but he couldn’t deny that it certainly made life a lot easier. It wasn’t quite the same without Derek and Cora around though and learning that Erica was back had given him the perfect excuse to call them and see if they were ready to return to Mystic Falls. He hadn’t told them why they should return since he had known that that was much better done in person but they both seemed to have realised that something was going on anyway so that had to count for something. Even so it was still a surprise to see Derek out in the parking lot waiting for him at the end of his shift but it was a pleasant surprise. There was a time when he hadn’t quite known what to make of Derek but the guy had taken him under his wing when he could have easily washed his hands of him and left him to his own devices and over time Scott had come to consider him his older brother so he couldn’t deny that it was good to see him. “The boss I had before was awful, nothing I ever did was good enough for him and he wasn’t interested in training me, all he wanted was someone to yell at and do the awful jobs that he didn’t want to do. I got really lucky when Rhiannon took over,” he admitted. The guy that had run the place before really had sucked all of the fun out of the job but thankfully now Scott had that back and he had someone who actually wanted to teach him so he knew that he really was lucky in that respect. “Well, I’m glad you made it. A lot has changed since you were last here,” he said, knowing that things were sure to be much easier now that Derek and Cora were in town. “There have been a few more rumours circulating here lately but so far we haven’t found any solid leads,” he explained. Finding the people responsible was much easier said than done but Scott had a feeling that they had been doing this for a while so he knew that it was to be expected. Scott knew that he could have waited before telling Derek about Erica but after everything that had happened he had a feeling that his friend could use some good news so he had known that there wasn’t any point in keeping it from him. “I’ll let her give you the details but basically she managed to find her own way back from the Other Side,” he said, knowing that if anyone could do that then it would be her. “That’s the main reason why I called you both, we’ve all missed having you around but Erica has been searching for you ever since she got back.”DEREK HALE

Mystic Falls had been the Hales’ home. His family a presence there for so long that Derek doubted any could remember a time without them. Talia had held her family’s sway, a leader not only of their pack but of the community. In one fell swoop Kate Argent had destroyed their family, their pack. It had seemed like Peter was the only one to crawl his way out of it and even then he’d just been a shell of who he was, scarred, unresponsive, left for six years in a hospital while he’d healed from the inside out. Amongst those ashes Laura had become the Alpha but the two of them couldn’t have filled the hollow that had been left. The two of them had left too, heading for New York and a life that didn’t revolve around their family or the pack. If it hadn’t been for Peter they might still have been there. Scott and the others would’ve been back in Beacon Hills, probably scattered by college for most of the year but still back there in the summer, living normal human lives. Peter had woken up though and in a brain rewired wrong by the trauma he’d tried to rebuild himself a pack and in the process had opened up the door for so much worse.
It probably wasn’t fair to put all of this at his uncle’s feet after his own role in how it had started but it was easy enough to do. Without Peter Scott wouldn’t have had to leave Alan Deaton’s tutelage. Maybe it wasn’t entirely a loss, since Scott’s prior boss here had handed over the reins to someone more competent but the redhead certainly wasn’t Deaton. Derek dragged his gaze away from the window as Rhiannon, as Scott called her, disappeared. ”Why bother hiring you if he had no interest?” he asked bluntly. Because he was an ass who didn’t want to get his hands dirty, it tended to be the story of the world. Derek bobbed his head slowly at the idea and lifted his chin towards the clinic. ”Better make sure you keep her around then.” Especially since Deaton was another person on the missing list. While the rest had made their way here Deaton had gone radio silent.
On the road, trying to find a trail back to the Dread Doctors, it had been the same for him and Cora until the call had come in that had drawn them back here. Derek’s brow furrowed, dark brows drawing together as the rest of him went still. ”How much is a lot?” he asked in a low voice. If it was something huge, surely they would’ve reached out to them before, Alix would have reached out even if she thought he wouldn’t want to hear. Pale eyes ticked from Scott to the perimeter of the parking lot around them. They were still out there then, hiding in the shadows as they had done before. ”Same,” he breathed. No matter how many feelers they put out there the result was the same. Obviously other things, other people had been at work while they were gone, the news Scott dropped on him leaving him a little breathless. Derek huffed out a breath of laughter as Scott told him that Erica made her own way back from the Other Side. ”She always was smart,” he admitted. Dragging a hand out of his pocket Derek clapped it against Scott’s shoulder, squeezed lightly. ”It’s appreciated. We were heading back soon anyway. There was no news and … I think it’s time to try this your way.” He wouldn’t have wanted Erica to see him this way but there was only so long he could kid himself for. They weren’t going to find one of the Dread Doctors and be able to make them reverse it.

Scott didn’t regret the decision to move to Mystic Falls so that he could try and save Allison. Beacon Hills was his home and it was where he had grown up but he had known that there was no way that he could turn his back on Allison while she was being possessed by a demon. He and his friends had gone through the pain of losing her and it had taken Scott time to learn how to be his own anchor after that. Back in Beacon Hills there had always been some kind of a threat that they had to face and it was the same in Mystic Falls but at least in Mystic Falls they all had each other. There was no way that Allison could have returned to Beacon Hills since everyone knew that she had died and the truth was that over time Mystic Falls had started to feel like home as well. Leaving Deaton, Kira, Malia and some of the others behind in Beacon Hills wasn’t easy but Scott had stayed in touch with them and he had made it clear that if they ever did want to join the rest of them in Mystic Falls then they would be welcome to do so. It didn’t matter to Scott where in the world his friends were, they were all family and he knew that they always would be. The same was true for Derek, Scott hadn’t known quite what to make of him at first but the guy had become a brother to him and Scott knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through everything that had happened over the last few years since he’d become a werewolf without Derek’s help. Scott had understood when Derek had left to try and find answers but he couldn’t deny that he was glad that the guy was back. “He just wanted someone to do the grunt work. He doesn’t like doing the less glamorous jobs,” Scott shrugged. His former boss had liked treating animals but he hadn’t liked having to take care of them before or afterwards. “I will,” he nodded as Derek said that he had better keep Rhiannon around. Scott knew just how good he had it with her and he knew that he didn’t want that to change. As Derek asked how much was a lot, Scott shrugged. “There have been a lot more people disappearing around town and turning up different like you and I’ve been hearing rumours about some kind of a supernatural hit list. Klaus is also close to creating more hybrids,” Scott explained. It was sure to be a lot to take in but Scott knew that Derek could handle it and he knew that there wasn’t any point in hiding it from him anyway considering he would find out soon enough. The main thing that had changed, though, was the fact that Erica was back and Scott felt a smile form on his face as Derek said that Erica always was smart. “You got that right,” he nodded. That much hadn’t changed and he had a feeling that it never would. Scott hadn’t realised just how much of a relief it would be to have Derek back but he was starting to realise that now. “I’m glad you’re back,” he admitted. He knew that he had changed a lot from the boy he was when he first became a werewolf but Derek was a brother to him and Scott had missed having him around. DEREK HALE

This was a new start. Not one that any of them had imagined or wanted, but a new start all the same. New people in town, unfortunately new problems too. Eyes narrowed as he’d studied the new vet through the window at the front of her clinic Derek wished a crappy former boss was the worst of what they faced. This wasn’t a normal town though, people didn’t have normal problems here. They had doctors screwing with their DNA instead, an Original Hybrid killing people to turn him into something those docs probably would’ve loved, someone putting their names down on a list that would see them all dead if whoever was behind them got their way. Derek raised a hand, scrubbed his fingers over the back of his head where he could still feel the brush of Alix’s weapon as she’d gone to kill him. Somehow the shock in her eyes when she’d realised what she’d been about to do was worse. That he could still feel in his gut now.
He pushed it down like he did so much else, all left to simmer below a surface that wasn’t always his own now. The curse of the things that had taken him. Another layer of what he was stripped away – in secret this time instead of seared away in the fire that had taken his family. Scott had to know what that was like too, although, it seemed with the new boss, that the change had worked out for the better for him. Derek scraped his teeth over his lip, nodding as he briefly met Scott’s eye. ”A servant instead of someone to learn from him.” Someone the complete opposite of Deaton. The vet’s absence was another part of that disconcerting swirl of loss in the pit of his stomach. For some reason Deaton hadn’t made the trip here with the rest of them, hadn’t surfaced despite the attempts to contact him since. That had to be bad.
Whether the Dread Doctors were involved was still a mystery. Hell, they didn’t even know if those things had been what had taken him from Beacon Hills to start with. The trail went instantly cold in his loft here and remained just as cold here. Derek let out a long breath, his hands coming up to scrub wearily over his face. ”So they’re still here, still working. Nobody’s been able to shut them down.” More tellingly they hadn’t run. Alix had made it clear that they had before. Suddenly going quiet in one town when their failures appeared to be racking up, turning up elsewhere and starting all over again. She’d been trailing them while her uncle had sent her from town to town … or had at least monopolised where she was to line his pockets. Derek’s mouth pinched faintly, his pale eyes studying Scott before he sucked in a breath to talk. ”I know about the hit list. I’m betting Stiles told you some of what went on when he tried to break into my place?” Stiles had a way of running off his mouth even when it would’ve been wiser to keep it shut. The hybrids … that was new though and just as worrying. The pack already had enough on their hands.
He shook his head, trying to shove that into line with everything else that was going on. Everything in time, each enemy faced when they absolutely had to right now. Unlike Mystic Falls there were more people fighting here, three groups together from what he’d heard, each with a hand in the game and Erica … Erica was the cherry on top of it all. Derek let his hand fall away from Scott’s shoulder as he straightened up. ”She’ll give us an edge,” he said lightly, and he knew she wouldn’t stop fighting to get Boyd back too. ”I’d say that makes two of us, but given what you just told me was going on, staying gone might’ve been a wiser move. You heading home?” Scott would’ve come on his bike, no doubt, but Derek tipped his head in the direction of his truck in offer instead.
