Relaxing back into the couch, Damon kicked his heels up on the coffee table. The fire was roaring in the fireplace, flames licking over the logs he’d tossed in half an hour ago, heating the winter chilled air in the Boarding House. When it’d just been him and Stefan that hadn’t been all that much of an issue but now the place wasn’t just home to two hundred and fifty year old vampires. There were other people to worry about here, people who were far more fragile. Blue eyes narrowed faintly, ears straining for sound in the house that he knew he wasn’t going to hear. For the first time in a while the place was empty. No Stefan, no Elena, no guests. He should’ve been throwing up his hands and crowing hallelujah but Damon knew it would’ve been premature. The last time he’d been able to indulge like this Elena had been at the door five minutes later, accusing him of brooding and day drinking, eventually guilting him into getting her out of town for an afternoon. Maybe both of them had needed to get away from Mystic Falls then but he sure as hell didn’t need to do it today. There wasn’t any great threat weighing on his mind, he wasn’t still trying to work through what had happened with Stefan and Niklaus and the grumpy puppy’s bite, he wasn’t even trying to figure out how to approach what was going on with Claire. All of that had somehow managed to settle itself over the last couple of months. That meant he wasn’t a man at a loose end or even one shredding those ends in an attempt to see how they’d all grown so tangled. He was a man with an afternoon to himself who was absolutely going to enjoy it.
Half smirking to himself, Damon slumped down further in the corner of the couch. The near full glass of bourbon dangled from his fingertips, catching the light from the fire and tossing it back to him. Maybe in an hour or so the others would start filtering in – Stefan, Elena likely in his wake, Skylar, Tatia perhaps dropping off her school stuff before heading out to find her thousand year old beau, Amara stalking back in from wherever she’d been to try and fathom this millennium. Letting out a long breath, Damon raised the glass to his lips. Anybody who could’ve predicted all of this two years ago he’d have laughed at. Then his only concern had been getting Katherine out of the tomb and he’d been willing to toss anybody necessary under the bus to do it. Caroline and Bonnie were still salty about finding themselves under those wheels but at a time there hadn’t been any other way. More fool him for believing that Katherine had felt half for him what he’d felt for her. Despite her lingering around town still, practically daring Niklaus Mikaelson to take another swipe at her, that wasn’t weighing too heavily on him. Things had moved on, he’d moved on, and he had the whole afternoon not to think about it. His eyelids were just drooping shut when the door opened. He’d had all afternoon to think about it. Tilting his head back, he peered over the back of the sofa, catching a glimpse of brunette hair. These days it took a moment to pick them apart … Tatia, Elena, Amara … one face, three very different women. He knew Tatia when he saw her though. ”Didn’t expect anybody else back this early,” he called out in greeting. ”Had the house to myself. No school night date with Elijah?” Considering all the Originals Tatia could’ve picked from, she’d had the good taste to at least select the honourable one. The one who’d tossed in his lot with the people turning against his brother when it’d come to the Ritual that his lady love had ended up dying in all the same.

For the time being things seemed to be going well, too well almost, but Tatia knew better than to look a gift horse in the mouth. Stefan had returned to Mystic Falls, things were going well with Elijah and if she was honest so far Tatia was enjoying her senior year. A school like the one in Mystic Falls was something that never would have been possible in the time that she had been born into and even though she knew that most people didn’t tend to like school she enjoyed learning everything that she could about the world that she now lived in. Stefan and the others had helped her catch up and now she was able to do much more on her own although she still knew when to ask for help. She knew that it was only a matter of time before Nik managed to find a way to create more hybrids but until then Tatia knew that she just wanted to make the most of the time that she had. She had already died twice and been brought back to life so she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was perhaps living on borrowed time but if that was the case then she knew that she didn’t want to waste a moment of it. She knew that Elena felt the same and if there was anything that she could do to stop the girl going through what she had then Tatia knew that she would do it in an instant. She had given her life for the girl once so that Nik wouldn’t use her in his ritual but none of them knew what was going to happen next. The future was something that Tatia had been thinking about a lot lately and if she and Elena both managed to live through whatever was to come then she knew that she didn’t want to take any more chances with her life so she had asked Elijah to turn her. Becoming a vampire wasn’t something that she had ever thought that she would want for herself but if she didn’t then she knew that Elijah and Lukas would outlive her once again and she knew that she didn’t want them to have to go through that a third time if there was any way that she could help it. If that did happen then she knew that it would be a way off so for now she just wanted to enjoy her time as best she could. That day she had finished school early as she had a free period last thing and she hadn’t felt like sticking around the school on her own while the others were all still in class so she had left early and headed back to the Boarding House. With each day that went by she still expected to be told that she had outstayed her welcome and if she was honest she had been thinking about trying to find a place of her own so that she wouldn’t be a burden on the Salvatore brothers any longer but she knew that she at least needed to get through her senior year first and then she could start making plans. For now the Boarding House was her home and it had felt natural to head back there after the school day had finished. She hadn’t thought that anyone else would be home but it didn’t take her long to spot Damon sitting on the sofa and she offered him a smile as she made her way into the house. “I had a free period so I thought I might as well come home early,” she admitted with a shrug before shaking her head. “Not tonight, he is catching up with Henrik. No plans with Claire today?” she asked, knowing that the two of them had been spending a lot more time together lately. “ I can make myself scarce if you would rather go back to having the place to yourself,” she offered. She had homework that she needed to get done but it was still early so she knew that she could always head into town for a bit. DAMON SALVATORE

Returning back to Mystic Falls when the whispers of an original family of vampires hell bent on coming for Elena, Damon had found himself with a serious distrust of doppelgangers. Katherine had already started to destroy any good will he had towards her line, only Elena’s relationship with his brother … and her way of getting under his skin … keeping her safe from the wrath that had burned in him. Stefan opening up the doors to the resurrected first doppelganger had been insane in his opinion but Stefan had held his ground against his big brother’s suspicions and in the end, Damon had to admit that Stefan had been right to do so. Tatia could’ve been out to save her own hide, shoving Elena under the bus when it came to Niklaus and his murderous little ritual. She’d done the opposite though, and he had to give her kudos for that. Instead of allowing Elena to die, Tatia had pretty much handed herself over to Niklaus, making it clear that Elena deserved a chance to live. Even his little black heart had seen the nobility in that. Maybe it had been that selflessness that had influenced him to try and convince Claire not to bend Stefan’s arm on going on his little road trip with Klaus. Had he died that day Niklaus wouldn’t have had any leverage to force Stefan to go on the road with him, instead, Claire had made the call and for months Stefan had allowed himself to be dragged around the south-east, watching Klaus slaughter just about every werewolf the two of them had been able to find in the name of creating a loyal little pack of hybrids. None of them had figured out why they’d failed yet but at that moment Damon wouldn’t have said that it didn’t matter.
For once, the house was empty, all of those calling it home except for him off at school, playing naïve little teenagers. For most it was one hell of an act, one that most in town hadn’t seen through yet. Slumped on the couch, his third … fourth? … glass of bourbon in hand, Damon had allowed his mind to drift, casting off those weights that had him constantly on edge of late. He still had an hour of peace and quiet, or at least he’d thought that he had until the front door had opened and his little nap had been cut short by Tatia’s return home. Having confirmed it was her with a glimpse, he took his time straightening up on the couch. Setting his glass down, Damon yawned, scrubbing a hand over his face. ”I didn’t factor those in to my equation,” Damon admitted. Turning on the couch, he faced Tatia as she came in. ”Not tonight,” he echoed with a crooked grin. ”She’s working tonight with the Great Grump.” Shaking his head, Damon picked up his glass again, gesturing her into the room and then reaching out with his free hand to pat the couch beside him. Five minutes ago he might’ve taken her up on her offer but there wasn’t any point now. ”No need. Come on in. You want one of these? Technically you’re old enough to drink, aren’t you? I’m not corrupting a minor here…” Tatia might’ve had a child already but when Elijah Mikaelson had taken her life, she hadn’t been a great deal older than Elena. Years had passed at a different rate when he’d been a kid, faster still when Tatia and the Mikaelson clan had been born. Then you were lucky to live to middle age, and if you were super unlucky and your mother was a powerful witch, you were unlucky enough to be stuck in your twenties forever.

After being taken in by Stefan at the Boarding House, Tatia had come to really enjoy being surrounded by other people. Before that she had been living in an abandoned cabin in the woods but Elena had found her during one of her excursions into Mystic Falls and she had taken her to the Boarding House in the hope of getting some help. Until then all Tatia had known about the world that she had been brought back into had been picked up on those excursions and she had come to realise that a lot had changed since she died but Stefan and the others had helped her get to grips with the way the world was now and the truth was that she had been learning as much as she could about it. She could have gone about her life after they filled her in and found something to keep her busy without school coming into the equation but instead she had chosen to go to school with Elena, Stefan and the others and she knew that it was the best decision that she had made in a long time. Not only did it give her the chance to spend more time with the people she cared about but it also gave her a sense of normality in her life that she otherwise wouldn’t have had. It was true that she was older than Elena and the others when she died but that didn’t matter now, she was passing herself off as Elena’s twin so that they could both live in Mystic Falls in peace and she knew that it was the best thing for both of them. Tatia could have moved anywhere in the world but Mystic Falls was her home and the people she loved were there so she knew that there wasn’t anywhere else that she would rather be. Sooner or later she knew that she was going to need to get her own place, after all she couldn’t depend on Stefan and Damon’s kindness forever, but for now the Boarding House was her home and since Elijah was busy that day she didn’t even have to think about it twice before heading back there. With Stefan at school she hadn’t known whether anyone else would be at home that day but the moment she realised that Damon was there she couldn’t help but feel a little bad for bursting his bubble. He didn’t go to school like she and Stefan did and she had a feeling that it wasn’t very often that he got to spend time there without Amara either. Free periods weren’t something that she tended to get too many of lately so she often tried to make the most of them while she could. “Ares isn’t that bad,” Tatia laughed as Damon called him the Great Grump. Claire clearly meant a lot to Damon and Ares meant a lot to her so she hoped that in time the two of them would learn to get along. Tatia was ready to head back out again and give Damon the house to himself for a while longer but instead he was patting the sofa and she felt a smile touch her lips as she made her way over and sat down next to him. “I was twenty when I died so I think we’re safe,” she laughed. “I’d love one, thanks,” she nodded. As far as the people of Mystic Falls were concerned she was still in high school but the reality was that she was a few years older than her friends and she hadn’t forgotten that. “So what have you been up to today?” she asked, genuinely curious as to what he got up to while the rest of them were at school. There had been trips ‘home’ between that first scurrying away from Mystic Falls following the burning of the church and Giuseppe’s death. Every couple of decades Stefan would head home like the prodigal son, or in his case, the prodigal distant relative, because what bigger red flag was there than ‘hi, I’m the same Stefan Salvatore who slaughtered your grandfather here seventy years ago’. Inevitably he’d follow in his brothers footsteps, as he had always done, snatching away those brief moments of Stefan’s happiness, making sure he paid for forcing his hand in turning, for even being there when the promise had always been him and Katherine forever. Of course, at that point he hadn’t told Stefan that Katherine had survived the burning of the church. Nope, that had been his little secret as he’d waited to be able to somehow release Katherine from her tomb and it had been his shock when he’d realised that there was somebody else with Katherine’s face. Damon knew that he should’ve suspected something but even after more than a century of life, there were still things that could surprise him, knock him on his ass. The doppelgangers had done that, had continued to do that, through Elena, Tatia, Tom … now Amara too. At least with Niklaus back in town and pulling the dark cloud over them all again, Katherine seemed to have scurried into hiding. One less problem for him to have to deal with at the moment and that one little chance left that the life he’d started to build here was going to survive for more than a week without some problem coming in to crush it into pieces again.
What did they say about the third time being the charm? He’d technically died once, Klaus had come the closest to making it twice, a third time likely wasn’t going to go well, and this time Damon knew he actually had something, multiple someones, to lose. That, he thought as he heard Tatia laugh at his swipe at Claire’s partner, was something that both Tatia and Claire could understand. Damon’s smirk deepened for a second as he turned to face Tatia. ”Most of the time he’s not that bad. The guy really could do with some Pollyanna lessons though, maybe try being a little ray of sunshine one day.” As much as he and Ares wouldn’t have gotten on under usual circumstances, they had Claire for that buffer, both of them caring enough about her to tolerate one another. Tolerance was a big word these days and he’d tried, he honestly had, handling more people around the Boarding House than he ever thought he would. Damon leaned sideways, grabbing another glass from the side table before he opened the bottle to pour her two fingers into it. ”Just wanted to ask for morals sake, not my morals, obviously.” A couple of centuries ago nobody thought twice about giving kids alcohol, the water completely unsafe to drink in most places. ”There are a few around here who already think I’m a bad influence.” Those who now considered him a friend or family included. Elena had asked him not to mention the two of them heading off to escape Mystic Falls for an afternoon, he’d kept that promise, which would’ve raised a few eyebrows had it come out. Remembering her warnings about day drinking that day, Damon smirked, lifting his own glass as he handed Tatia her glass. ”Would you believe me if I just said brooding and day drinking?” he asked, echoing Elena’s comments from before their trip. It seemed to be what most thought he did with his time.

After remembering what had happened in the lead up to her death, Tatia had never felt more alone. The one person she had always been able to trust had turned out to be the person that had killed her and it had taken her time to get her head around that. Living out in the woods on her own hadn’t been ideal given what Mystic Falls was like but until Stefan and Damon took her in she really hadn’t had any choice in the matter. Back then she had been able to hunt to provide food for herself and she had never had any trouble making a fire but she had also ventured into town whenever she had found herself feeling particularly adventurous. Everything had changed during the time she had been gone and those changes had fascinated her even though she hadn’t understood them. The kindness the Salvatores had shown her ever since Elena had taken her to their home in the hope that Stefan would be able to help was more than she ever could have hoped for. They had given her a place to live, they had fed her, clothed her and they had also helped her adjust to the world she had found herself in. She knew that she would have been lost without their help and she had come to think of the two of them as family pretty quickly. Over a year had passed since they had taken her in and if she was honest she was a little worried that soon they might start to feel like she was overstaying her welcome but for now at least things were going well and she wanted it to stay that way for as long as possible. “Perhaps that’s why he and Claire get along so well, they balance each other out,” Tatia shrugged before letting a playful smile touch her lips. “Come to think of it, you and Ares can be quite alike at times,” she teased. She knew that they were trying to be civil to one another for Claire’s sake and that was something that Tatia was pretty sure meant a lot to the woman. The Damon she had met when she first moved into the Boarding House seemed quite different to the one before her now and she knew that there were a number of reasons for that. Damon had almost died after he was bitten by Nik and had it not been for Stefan handing himself over to Nik then he would have done. Dying could definitely change a person as Tatia knew all too well so she couldn’t blame Damon for trying to be a better person and she was glad that things seemed to be going well for him and Claire now that they had finally stopped dancing around what was going on between them. Looking at the two of them from a distance it had been pretty obvious that there was something more going on between them but it wasn’t always easy to see that let alone to admit it when you were one of the people involved. “I wouldn’t say that, you usually have your reasons for doing what you do,” Tatia shrugged before reaching out to take the glass from him. “Thanks,” she said before lifting the glass to her lips and taking a sip. As he spoke again she tapped the glass with her index finger as she thought about it for a moment before shaking her head. “I might have believed the old Damon would do that but not you, not after everything that has happened,” she said as she took another sip of her drink. “What have you really been up to?”DAMON SALVATORE

Relationships were messy. Whether they were of the romantic, familial or friendly sort, they put hooks under your skin and left you vulnerable to those quick, sharp yanks on those hooks that could leave you feeling as though your heart was being torn from your chest. It was an idea that had come to him as he’d sat in a freezing cold corner of a field near the state line with the rain pelting down and cannon fire roaring just a couple of hundred yards away. Damon knew Giuseppe had never seen him as the thinker, as the poetic son, but he’d felt those hooks under his skin all the same as he’d considered tossing down his gun and returning home. Even then he’d given a damn about what his father had thought. It had taken that last trip home as plain old human Damon for him to start trying to tear those particular barbs out from beneath his skin. He’d failed then and dozens of times since as Stefan, Katherine and a dozen others had slipped those hooks under his skin and yanked hard enough that it had been almost impossible to deny what he was feeling. Up until Katherine had literally torn hers from his flesh he’d liked to believe that all that cover for the fact that he hadn’t actually flipped his switch had worked. Damon swallowed at the thought of the way he’d run from town, undoubtedly leaving them all gloating about Damon Salvatore running from a woman who’d played him for a century with his tail between his legs. Maybe they’d been right but he’d come back hadn’t he? Not only had he done that but he’d tried to start moving on, to willing allow some to slip those hooks a little closer to his heart and offer up a tender bit of skin to those who had every right to draw a little blood and inflict a little suffering.
Claire’s partner wasn’t technical on that list but undoubtedly the warlock had heard enough stories about Big Bad Damon to entirely trust that his partner was safe with him. Even with Ares wary he’d helped a guy out, done him a big enough solid that he couldn’t entirely condemn him. Damon snorted, wrinkling his nose at the idea. ”I’m nothing like the Neanderthal man,” he grumbled, not even wanting to start agreeing to that. They did say opposites attracted and truth was, he was far more opposite Claire in personality and temperament than he ever had bene with Katherine … or maybe it was just the fact that Katherine and Claire were night and day. ”Either way I’m just glad she has somebody watching her back,” he admitted finally. In Mystic Falls you needed it, they all did. What had happened with the bite had just proven it. Months before they might all have left him to crawl off and die in the woods, barring Stefan anyway. There was a faint snort of laughter from Damon as he handed over the glass he filled. ”You’ve definitely been spending time with Claire. You opened your mouth and I swear it was her voice rolling right out.” They were both able to see this thing beneath the surface, a Damon most didn’t care to look for. His blue eyes narrowed thoughtfully as he settled back against the couch. ”I don’t know what reason I can pin day drinking on. I’m sure Elena would be able to find one for me though. She thinks this is all about me brooding.” He gestured with his glass, swirling the bourbon in it as he indicated the room. It wasn’t even close, it wasn’t even the daily occurrence they all liked to believe it was. Tatia’s response to his question had his head tilting in consideration. Another thing to blame on the Old Damon. ”Catching some peace and quiet,” he admitted finally, lifting his glass to knock back a mouthful. ”It’s a rarity getting the house entirely to myself these days.” Stefan had established his school for waifs and strays and he … well, he had Claire here as often as he could.

Tatia knew that she had been fortunate to find a place that she could call home in Mystic Falls. For a while after she was brought back she had lived out in a cabin in the woods uncertain about venturing too far into the town that was so different from the village she had grown up in but now it felt like second nature to her. Elena had been the one to find her and make her realise that it was time she started living her life surrounded by people again rather than keeping herself far away from them and between them she and Stefan had helped fill her in on everything that she had needed to know. They had caught her up to the extent that she had been able to enrol herself in school so that they could better sell the idea that she and Elena were twins who had been separated at birth and that was the life that she had been living ever since. She had true family in the town in the form of Lukas and even Elena to an extent given that they were distantly related but she also had extended family in the form of Stefan, Damon, Skye and a few others. They had taken her in when she hadn’t had anywhere else to go, when she had needed time to come to terms with what Elijah had done and what he had become, and she knew that she was never going to be able to thank them enough for that. She knew that Damon perhaps hadn’t been so happy about the idea of having a house guest at the Boarding House to begin with but even he had thawed over time and now he was someone that she actually enjoyed spending time with on the odd occasion when she had the chance. She hadn’t expected to return home to find him drinking alone that day and she would have left him to it if that was what he’d wanted but instead he didn’t seem to mind her being there too much and she knew that it wasn’t quite the same for him when he was drinking alone so she was more than happy to give him some company for a while especially since Claire was working so he wouldn’t be able to see her. The two of them had been spending a lot of time together lately and they seemed happy so Tatia was happy for them. She knew from Stefan that there had been something between them for a while, something that neither of them had been ready to own up to, but they had opened themselves up to it in the end and she could already see that it had been worth the risk. “You’re both stubborn but you both want Claire to be happy. You have that much in common at least,” Tatia teased. She knew that Damon would perhaps never admit that he and Ares were alike in some ways but she saw it and she wouldn’t be surprised if Claire did too. They were both protective of the people they cared about as well and Claire was one of those people for both of them but they didn’t trust each other so it definitely explained how things could get between them at times. “Ares won’t let anything happen to her and I’m sure if he ever did then he’d have you to answer to,” she offered, pretty sure that Ares wouldn’t want to have to deal with an angry Damon anyway. “What can I say, she makes a lot of sense and she seems to be able to read you like an open book half the time,” Tatia laughed before lifting the glass that Damon handed her to her lips and taking a sip. She knew that Damon wasn’t that bad anyway, after all he could have kicked her out of the Boarding House a long time ago if he’d wanted to but he hadn’t, he had opened his home to her and even though he had made mistakes in the past she knew that he was trying to do better and that went a long way as far as she was concerned. “That seems like a good enough reason for day drinking as any to me,” she offered as she took another sip of her drink. “So what are you going to do with your time if Claire is working tonight?” she asked, knowing that the two of them had been spending a lot of their spare time together lately. Damon Salvatore playing nice without being forced or using it as a front for his wicked ways. Who honestly would’ve thought he was capable of it? He might’ve shown some doubt over it himself at times. There’d been a burning hatred in him at times that had eclipsed everything else. Seething towards Giuseppe for what he had done that night, despising Stefan for years at a time for making him turn even when he’d known that Katherine was gone, hating himself at moments for sinking into all of that. That wasn’t all he was, they’d proven that in the end. Stefan, Claire, Elena, Ric, they’d sworn blind that there was something other than angry Damon deep down in there. He might’ve denied it for a while but eventually even he’d had to admit that there was somewhere. He’d never switched his emotions off and become the monster he truly could’ve been. Some part had always cared and now those people who had trusted in that had started to cut away those parts of him that had been poisoned by Giuseppe, by Katherine and by everything he’d gone through at their hands and others. It lightened it all somehow, not distorting or changing what was left but revealing it slowly. The shadow of the old Damon dogged him at times, or was pulled out of the closet of his mind when needed but for the most part it was buried. Lucky for Claire’s partner that it was, Ares wouldn’t have liked the other him. Hell, if he thought he’d ever do something foolish and hurt Claire, the warlock would probably make what Bonnie had done to him on that bridge look like child’s play.
Now, that didn’t mean he was actually going to make it easy on the guy. There was no fun in that. Brooding and snarking at one another, now that had some real joy to it. Almost smirking on the idea, Damon swirled the bourbon in his glass. He grunted at Tatia’s assessment, firing a grin at her before he snorted. ”Tell him we’ve got anything in common and that swollen head of his will explode.” Damon used his other hand to mime Ares’ brains blowing out into the air. ”I’m the bigger man, I’m happy enough for her to have her work husband. I get her later.” And, Damon thought, as Tatia said, both of them did want Claire happy. Now, if Ares went and found himself a woman who’d put up with him outside of work it’d be a thousand times easier. Instead he was occasionally sharing outside of work too. Damon winged a dark brow at Tatia as she said the warlock would have him to answer to if anything did happen on the job, then smiled darkly. ”He knows better,” he agreed. And so did Claire, she knew him better. Damon crooned out a sound as he flopped back in his seat. ”She does and it’s honestly not just half the time.” Claire was wise enough to be able to strip the bull he spouted away most of the time. He lifted his glass, taking a long slow sip from it. ”A celebration,” he agreed, only half kidding. Damon raked his teeth over his lower lip, stirring up the smoky flavor of the bourbon on his tongue as blue eyes cut to Tatia. ”Drinking,” he teased before he gestured at her. ”Plans changed though. I’ve got myself some company that’s not going to make my head explode. If you’ve got the time that is.” Sooner or later there’d probably be homework or Elijah drifting through the door in a cloud of expensive aftershave, looking like he’d just walked off the cover of GQ.

After learning that she had woken up in a completely different time Tatia had never thought that her life would end up the way it had done. She had known that Elijah was in town but she hadn’t thought that the other Mikaelsons would put in an appearance or that Lukas would turn up too. She had spent months believing that her son had died a thousand years before but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. Knowing that the people who knew her before she died were all around Mystic Falls and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. She had family around her now in the form of Lukas and the Mikaelsons but the truth was that her family had grown more than she had ever thought possible. Not a day went by when she wasn’t grateful to Stefan and Damon for taking her in and giving her a home, the two of them had become family to her during the time she had lived with them and even though she had thought about getting her own place so that she and Elijah could have some more time alone together she couldn’t bring herself to leave behind the other people that she loved just yet. It had taken her a while to get used to Damon and the way he was but over time he had become a friend to her too and now he was someone that she trusted completely. She knew that he probably didn’t always like having so many teenagers around the house but the two of them were close in age and if she was honest she enjoyed his company so she was glad that he was home that day. Had he wanted to continue drinking alone then she knew that she would have left him to it but he seemed happy to have her there so she knew that it wouldn’t hurt to stick around for a while. As Damon said that Ares’ head would explode if he learned that they had anything in common, Tatia couldn’t help but laugh. “I wouldn’t dream of telling him, don’t worry,” she grinned. It was clear to her how much the two men cared about Claire, albeit in different ways, and Tatia knew that Claire was lucky to have them both there looking out for her. “It looks like she has the best of both worlds then.” Claire had told her that Ares was an old friend of hers just like Damon was and the two of them really did make a good team so Tatia was glad that things seemed to have worked out for her. “Either way it’s good to see you happy. You’re almost like a different man to the one I met when I moved in,” she admitted. So much had changed since then and she knew that it had taken Damon a while to get his head around the fact that Katherine had let him believe that she was trapped in the tomb for such a long time but he seemed to have moved on from that now and she really was happy for him. “I think Ares knows better than to get on your bad side.” She knew that the two of them begrudgingly spent time together while Claire was around but Damon was a force to be reckoned with when someone hurt someone that he loved so she didn’t doubt that Ares would do everything he could to stop that from happening. Claire was more than capable of looking after herself as well so Tatia had a feeling that among didn’t have anything to worry about there. “She’s a wise woman, I think you’ve needed someone like her around,” she admitted thoughtfully as she looked over at Damon. There were times when it was easier just to indulge him but she had seen the way that he and Claire were together and if she was honest it was quite refreshing. Lifting her glass to her lips and taking a sip as Damon said that he was celebrating having the house to himself, Tatia felt a smile work its way across her face as she lowered her glass. “It’s not so bad having all of us around, is it?” she teased before nodding as Damon said he now had some company if she had the time. “Elijah is spending some time with Henrik so I’ve got all the time in the world tonight and I guess I should probably take you saying I don’t make your head explode as a compliment, huh?” she laughed. Happiness wasn’t something Damon thought he’d ever have again. After he’d woken in transition to hear that Stefan had killed Giuseppe and had turned himself, to hear that Katherine had died in that church and Stefan had talked him into an eternal life without her it had just been … gone. Maybe there’d been flickers of it at times, brief shining moments in the dark but each had dimmed rapidly as things had returned to their usual bloody, vicious status quo. When he’d learned that Katherine was probably in the tomb and there was a way to free her it had burned in his chest for a short time, that desperate need to see the woman he’d fallen head over heels for. Snuffed out the instant he’d discovered that Katherine had been playing him for a fool all along. It had been replaced for regret by a while but most of that had stuck in his throat, threatening to choke him even as he’d left town with his tail between his legs. It had always been easier to make others to pay for misery than it had been to toss it outside and finally try and find it outside of Katherine. In a way he hadn’t had the choice in it in the end. Coming back to protect Elena had been a way of making up for his crimes committed in the name of love, finding Claire here amongst it all had more than once felt like the universe’s way of finally making up for all that misery for him. He wouldn’t admit it out loud and blow his entire reputation on it but for the first time in all those years it felt good to allow himself to be happy.
Now he’d spilled a little too much of the truth Damon found himself having to aim a finger at Tatia as she laughed to avoid it getting out of these four walls. He and Ares were never going to see eye to eye on anything except for one thing and that was the woman between the two of them. ”Good,” Damon said, bringing his finger up to bump it against his lips in a keep quiet gesture. ”I’m not so sure she’d see it that way. She’s got him to drive her nuts there, me to do the same here.” He tried to sound breezy about it but as Tatia said he seemed like a different man these days Damon knew he’d probably revealed a little too much here. His mouth twisted wryly as he lifted his glass to his lips. ”Don’t say that too loud either,” he grumbled, pretending to scowl for a moment. Honest truth was that happy felt good. Of course it meant it would hurt more if it all got stripped away again but he wasn’t planning on letting that happen. Angry, frustrated, out of control Damon was in the past for now and he was planning on keeping it that way. Damon grunted his agreement about Ares knowing better than getting on his bad side. The warlock would’ve had to have been an idiot not to. Thinking of Claire Damon melted back into his chair, a faint smile pulling at his lips. ”Someone to call me on my bad behaviour?” he asked lightly, knowing it wasn’t what Tatia meant. He tapped his fingers against his glass, winging his brow at Tatia’s teasing question. ”It’s awful,” he said dead pan. ”For me, not for Stefan. It’s been good having people around for him. Keeps him out of his own head.” Which was often the worst place for his brother to be. He had Elena for that too now. Hopefully the two of them would remain off somewhere tonight too. Damon’s smirk grew as he rolled his head against the back of the chair. ”The biggest they get. You’re not at all like I thought you were going to be.” Having spent so much time with Elena and Katherine, Damon had been pretty sure Tatia was going to be just like one or the other but she hadn’t been.

Tatia knew that sooner or later she was going to need to get her own place and make sure that she didn’t end up overstaying her welcome with the Salvatore brothers but the truth was that she was happy living in the Boarding House. She had Lukas and Elijah with her in Mystic Falls but the Salvatores had given her a place that she could call home and she had gained more family in them so she was grateful that they had taken a chance on her and given her a safe place to stay. It had taken her a while to get her head around what had happened and just how much things had changed but Stefan and Elena had helped her adjust and she knew that she would have been lost without them. Now there were still certain things about the world she was living in that she didn’t know but she knew enough to be making her way through high school and she was even thinking about going on to college with the others when her senior year came to an end. A few years ago she never would have thought that any of this was possible but thanks to those around her she had a life that was better than she had ever thought possible and she knew better than to take any of it for granted. It would have been easy to let herself be consumed by fear after the ritual was completed but that wasn’t her. She had feared Elijah for a while but she had eventually managed to work her way through it and she had been doing the same with everything else that life had thrown her way as well. She knew that she was much stronger than she used to be and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She had never liked everyone around her feeling like they needed to protect her and that was the reason why she had asked Elijah to turn her once her senior year was over. She was tired of being vulnerable and knowing that she could be taken away from the people she loved again at any minute but there was something she could do about it and she didn’t regret the decision that she had made one bit. She knew that she didn’t want it to happen before graduation since she wanted to get through the end of her senior year first but once that was done she was ready to start the next chapter of her life. “Between the two of you I really don’t know how she manages,” Tatia laughed. In all honesty she knew that neither of them were that bad, Ares seemed to have Claire’s back both while they were working and after their shifts ended and it was clear just how much Damon cared about the woman as well. If she was honest she knew that Claire was lucky to have two people who cared about her so much but they both had strange ways of showing it and they could both be a little too overprotective at times so she wouldn’t be surprised at all if they drove Claire crazy on occasion. Tatia didn’t know Ares that well but she had seen a real change in Damon over the last couple of years and she knew that a large part of that was down to Claire. He was a much better person than he had been when she moved into the Boarding House and even though there were still those who only saw the mistakes that he had made in the past Tatia was able to see passed those and she hoped that in time others would too. “Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me,” she said, a smile working its way across her face as she looked over at him. “Your words, not mine,” she grinned even though she knew that he was only joking. Damon talked a good game most of the time but Claire seemed to be good for him so she was glad that things seemed to have finally worked out between the two of them. She knew that it had been touch and go for a while but they were happy and that was something that they both deserved. “Ouch,” she teased, pretending to be hurt as Damon said that it was awful for him having all of them around. “I don’t think you mind it really, if you did then we all would have been kicked out a long time ago,” she said, her eyes locked on his as she lifted her glass to her lips and took a sip. As Damon said that she wasn’t at all how he had thought she would be, she studied him carefully for a moment. “Is that a good or a bad thing?” she asked, curious as to how he really saw it. The easiest way to keep people at an arm’s length had always been to irritate them to the point where they kept a clear distance. If all they were thinking was that you were an asshole, they weren’t gonna look too deep below the surface at the thing that was slightly cracked beneath. After years of Giuseppe peeling away that shield to take lumps out of his soft underbelly it had felt good. Even after he’d returned to Mystic Falls to get Katherine out, that distance had been happily embraced, nobody had needed to know what he was up to, especially when it worked out that they were already too close. Katherine not being in the tomb had torn him up beneath that surface and suddenly all those judgy little eyes had taken on a sympathetic edge. Damon was pretty sure it wouldn’t have lasted long if he’d stuck around in town then. Instead he’d taken to the road, not wanting to have to put up with all of that when one of the only things that had been keeping him going all that time turned out to have been the one thing he shouldn’t have been relying on. Damon wanted to snort every time he thought of just how easily Katherine had played him. All those years doing everything he’d thought she would’ve been proud of. When you’d done that it was hard to shed that reputation. You could open up your shields all you wanted, try and play the good guy but people were still going to see the Damon who’d twisted Caroline up into his little sidekick, the one who’d pushed Sheila Bennett hard enough to get what he wanted that she’d died. It wouldn’t have surprised him if that reputation had reached the ears of Claire’s partner, although he didn’t think Ares’ dislike of him stemmed entirely from that. He was stealing the guy’s work wife, that seemed to be enough.
Claire seemed to navigate between the two of them without somehow wanting to crack their heads together. Two men in her life, probably far more alike than either one of them ever wanted to admit. Both of them wanting to protect her from getting hurt. That was the crux of it all. Damon pretended to pout for a moment, hurt making his blue eyes shine until it all melted away. ”It helps that she’s got the patience of a saint and can see beneath the whole tall, dark and brooding thing going on.” Going on with both of them. He would’ve said tall, dark and handsome but Ares handsome? Naw. Damon’s expression almost immediately cracked from his mock scowl to a little smile as Tatia promised his secret was safe with her. Admitting out loud that you were happy always seemed to invite someone to try and crush it to dust. All it would take was one wrong word reaching Katherine’s ears. Damon smirked, his index finger held up for a moment. ”Talk to most people around here and they’d tell you I need more people to do that.” Stefan had tried for months before things had started to hit home. Listening, wising up, it had brought him and his little brother closer than they’d been since Katherine had come between them. That wasn’t to say he couldn’t still be good old Damon when he wanted to be … like now. Damon slanted a grin at Tatia before he tried to erase it. ”I’m not kidding, it’s hell,” he drawled, mock shuddering. He winged a brow, making a considering noise. ”Now there’s a thought, you think Skylar could hang on to the doorframe with her fingernails for a while?” Of course he wasn’t about to do it. It’d have that hurt look on Stefan’s face and all those waifs and strays looking like kicked puppies. Damn it. ”Given that you were gonna either be another Elena or another Katherine? All good. You’re not alike, not in those little ways.” Tatia might once have been caught between Elijah and Niklaus, the same way Katherine had been but she hadn’t turned sour and bitter with it, humanity hadn’t been burned out of her.

When she was first brought to the Boarding House Tatia hadn’t for one moment thought that she would end up enjoying her time there as much as she had done. The house really had become her home and the people living there had become her family. She hadn’t expected that when she had moved in but if she was honest now she was a little reluctant to leave even if a part of her worried that in time she would end up outstaying her welcome. A lot of the time Elijah ended up spending the night with her at the Boarding House or she would spend the night at his apartment but that day she had been looking forward to spending some time at the house while he spent some time catching up with Henrik. She had left Lukas a message to see if he was free that evening but she hadn’t yet heard back from him so she wasn’t sure if she would end up getting to spend some time with her son or not. Either way she knew that she would find something to do with her time especially since she had a free period on her hands and had been able to leave school early because of it. It had taken her a long time to get up to speed with everything but Stefan had helped her a lot and so had some of the others. She knew that she hadn’t had to go to school, she could have passed herself off as having graduated early if she had wanted to but at the end of the day it was something that she had never had the chance to do and being there made her happy. She had made a few friends of her own during her time there and even though she wasn’t sure what was going to happen when their time at school came to an end she knew that she was looking forward to that next chapter of their lives. For now it looked like she was going to get the chance to catch up with Damon. She hadn’t known quite what to make of him when she first moved into the Boarding House but he had definitely grown on her to say the least. During her first few weeks at the Boarding House she hadn’t said too much outside of her lessons with Stefan but she had watched and observed and she had quickly come to realise that there was more to Damon than met the eye. He often gave the illusion of not caring about what anyone thought about him but when it came to certain people that couldn’t be further from the truth. He cared, more than her perhaps wanted to believe himself sometimes, but as far as Tatia was concerned that wasn’t a bad thing and if she was honest she had come to enjoy the time that she got to spend with him. Tatia knew that she wasn’t able to read Damon anywhere near as well as Claire was but she knew enough. “That’s very lucky for you,” Tatia teased, her smile playful as she looked over at Damon. “I always thought Stefan was the brooding type but there are times when you have him beat.” Both Salvatores did their fair share of that at times it seemed but if she was honest with everything that they had going on she couldn’t necessarily say that she blamed them. They had been through so much during their time in Mystic Falls but for once things finally seemed to be going their way and she knew that she wanted that to continue. As Damon spoke again, Tatia couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe they would but sometimes just a few good people is enough. You have Claire and Stefan to call you out on things, I think that’s plenty,” she assured him. They were the two people who mattered most to Damon and even though he and Stefan had had their differences over the years they were still brothers and they seemed to be doing better now so she had a feeling that the two of them would be more than though. “I’m sure she would try,” she grinned, knowing that he wouldn’t do such a thing anyway. If he had wanted any of them gone then they wouldn’t have been able to stay this long so she knew that Damon was only messing around. “As much as I like Elena, I’ll take that as a compliment. Pretending to be her sister is fun but I always prefer it when people can tell that I’m not her. I like being my own person,” she admitted, hoping that he would understand. She knew that Katherine liked impersonating Elena but that wasn’t Tatia’s style. She wasn’t like her vampire doppelganger but she wasn’t completely like Elena either. They’d had different experiences of life and Tatia knew that hers had shaped her into the person she was today and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. Having Lukas had caused her to have to grow up really quickly but she knew that that wasn’t a bad thing. DAMON SALVATORE

He and Stefan were nothing alike. It was an image he’d spent more than a decade fostering, hell, most of his life fostering. Before their mother had died the two of them had been close. A unified front against Giuseppe’s temper, with him shouldering the brunt of the backlash from that temper against the two of them. Protecting his little brother, always watching out for him. Somewhere in the midst of their mom getting sick with consumption it had begun to change. The deepening cracks inside of himself meaning that he couldn’t stand with his brother when she’d died. There weren’t many things he regretted in his life, despite what he’d done, but not standing with Stefan then was something that Damon knew he’d carry to his own grave … centuries from now hopefully. That one act had been the start to that gulf opening up wide between them. Him going to war in a desperate search for Giuseppe’s approval, what he’d done with Katherine when he’d got back, knowing that Stefan already carried a torch for her, every damn thing he’d done to hurt his brother after Stefan had forced him to go through with the transition. It had all been geared to widen that gulf, to burn every bridge between them and prove that he and Stefan were nothing alike.
The big brother had protested too much. People knew it too. Katherine, Lexi, Claire, Tatia, they’d all seen the heart and Claire at least had seen through all the bluster and the hurt and had known the truth to it. Staring at Tatia with faintly narrowed eyes Damon realised Tatia had seen right through it too. An honest to God snort broke out of Damon as he tipped his head against the back of the couch to look at Tatia. He hadn’t meant himself and she knew it. ”I don’t brood,” he said, trying to sound haughty about it. It was bullshit of course, he did, albeit in a very different way to either Stefan or Ares. He didn’t get that constipated look, at least he hoped to hell he didn’t. Trying to prove it Damon only frowned faintly as he lifted his glass to sip from it. ”Much,” he added quietly. He nudged the brood aside, lips curving into a smirk as he’d suggested more people out there calling him on his bad behaviour. Grunting, he tapped his finger back against the glass. ”More than enough. They don’t hold back on me.” There was no indulgence the way there had been with Katherine, no anvil like pressure like there had been with Giuseppe. Not much room for snarking his way out of it either.
They were the two people who mattered enough that he truly cared how they saw him. Ric, Tatia and Elena were on that short list too, all of them getting under his skin far enough that they’d seen him, that they knew him and didn’t dislike who he was underneath. He hadn’t looked to start letting people in but between those who’d turned up back in his life and those Stefan had brought in it wasn’t like he’d had much choice in the matter to start with. Now he’d miss having them around, even Skylar, he had a soft spot for the kid. ”Try being the operative word,” he said with a grin. One look at the kid’s face as he tried it would’ve had what passed for a heart in his chest melting. Damon raked his teeth over his lower lip, pinning it as Tatia’s admission her him smiling. ”In that way you’re all alike. I think the only one who likes getting to be one of the others is Katherine and that’s just because she thinks it gives her some sort of advantage.” One that she tried using on him more than once … and it’d worked. ”You given any thought on what you want to do after all of this?” Damon swirled his glass in the air, indicating life in Mystic Falls in general.
