Knowing about the supernatural practically from birth didn’t make it any easier when your place in it all was suddenly switched. It wasn’t just like the rug getting pulled out from under your feet, it was like waking up one day to find you were caught in a riptide. You knew it was dangerous, you could fight it all you want, but in the end the chances of getting free of it were nearly impossible. Waking up in the high school Alix had known that something had changed in those hours she couldn’t remember. Once she’d realized what she’d been turned into the only way free of it had been to run, to leave her brothers behind. They didn’t know why she’d done it, none of them did … apart from Ralphy. He was the riptide now, pulling her in directions she didn’t want to go. This was one of them. Alix swallowed hard, trying to look rueful for what she’d almost done. She’d never wanted to go after kids, not even those whose slips had meant they’d actually taken a life. Kids had room to learn, control was still something that they could develop. Even if they were dangerous there was maybe a way out of it that there wasn’t for the rest of them. She could only be grateful to whatever higher power had managed to stop her in time, just like she had been with Derek. Having both of them on her conscience would’ve been like a lead weight on top of the anvil that had already been trying to crush her for months. She wanted to believe there was still a way out from under it, one that wouldn’t send it crashing down onto somebody else instead.
Green eyes ticked around the woods surrounding the two of them. The town didn’t look like anything bad could ever happen here but honestly it couldn’t be further from the truth. It was why she’d gotten away with what she was doing for so long. She dragged a hand through her hair as she looked back at him, the damp strands catching on her fingers. She wouldn’t put it past Ralphy not to try again with somebody else. It had been part of the reason she hadn’t allowed herself back around Derek … on top of the embarrassment and shame of what had happened the last time she’d seen him. Alix doubted it had been a bounty on Derek that had garnered Ralphy’s attention. Someone had been watching and that had been personal. This kid on the other hand … Screwing her face up slightly, Alix shrugged. ”That’s need to know and I guess they decided I didn’t need to. Thousands probably, tens, hundreds of thousands, depending on how badly someone wanted you.” She couldn’t believe that this kid would’ve hit millions. If the money coming in was that high surely Ralphy would’ve gotten his fill at some point. Drawing in a breath, Alix nodded and shifted restlessly. ”Maybe Ben’s warning didn’t stop those guys from reaching out to somebody. Some people don’t want to stop.” Her family included. Alix hadn’t intended on opening up to this kid about them but things had started to slip out anyway. The bitterness in her grin turned into something sad as it fell away. She pressed her lips together as she shook her head. ”We don’t always get what we want,” she told him on a sigh. If they did she never would’ve ended up here in the first place. She swallowed hard as he thanked her, she didn’t deserve that. ”If I can do anything to help you avoid it, I will,” Alix told him honestly. Fumbling at the bag she’d drawn the weapon from in the first place, she dug out one of her cards. Alix Quinn. Photographer. Her thin surface veneer that she clung to. Almost ashamed she offered it to him.

Dec and his family had done pretty well flying under the supernatural radar throughout everything that had been going on in the town but now it seemed to have finally caught up with them, or caught up with him at the very least. He knew that he and Amy shouldn’t have decided to have a bit of fun with their abilities that day, it had gone against his better judgement but with everything that had been piling up for both of them it had felt good to let loose and have fun for a while. They had tried to be careful but apparently they hadn’t quite been careful enough because they had been spotted anyway by someone who had been able to spot the warning signs. Had it been a regular passerby then he didn’t doubt that they would have been able to go undetected or they could have been able to explain away what was going on but the hunter had known that they were both werecreatures and he had used them for target practice. That had been Dec’s first run in with a hostile hunter and it had almost cost him his life. Ever since then he had been doing his best to be much more careful and make sure that only people that he truly trusted learned what he was but Alix was the second hunter that he had crossed paths with during his time in high school so he knew that the word had well and truly spread. If his name was on some list then he couldn’t deny that he was worried that Amy’s name might be on it too and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to protect his sister. She might be the older of the two of them but he had always seen it as his job to protect her and that still hadn’t changed. If he was honest he had thought about applying to a college far away from Mystic Falls so that he could get away from all of the hunters that were in town but Dec knew that he wasn’t going to let anyone chase him out of his home or away from his family and friends. They meant the world to him and he knew that he was much better off with them in his life so he knew better than to let anyone take that away from him. He knew that there were a lot of supernaturals in Mystic Falls and among those were people who enjoyed hurting and killing people. That wasn’t something that he or his family had ever done and he knew that he was lucky that Alix had hesitated and given him the chance to show her that he really didn’t mean any harm and that he had never killed anyone. There were other hunters like the one he had met the day that Ben had intervened that would have been far too happy to shoot first and ask questions never but thankfully Alix wasn’t one of those people. “That much to kill me?” Dec asked, unable to believe what he was hearing. It sounded crazy but he could tell from the way that Alix spoke that she was serious. “The guy that day didn’t look happy so I wouldn’t be surprised,” he admitted. If Alix had been given his description and told how to find him then there was nothing to stop the person responsible from sending someone else and something told him that once a name was on that list it wasn’t going to come off until the person was dead. Alix had suggested that he change up his routine and he knew that he would definitely do that but there was something else weighing on his mind as well. “Is there any way to find out what other names are on that list?” Dec felt sick to his stomach about the thought of someone he loved being on that list too but if they were then he knew that he needed to find out so that he could warn them. “Nothing is set in stone, I’m sure you could change it if you wanted to,” he offered, pretty sure from what he had seen that if anyone was able to do it then it was Alix. “Thanks,” he said sincerely as Alix said she would help him avoid meeting that fate if she could. Glancing down at the card she had given him, he felt a half smile tug at the corner of his mouth. “You’re a photographer as well as a hunter?”ALIX QUINN

The idea of hunting for money had turned her stomach the very first time Ralphy had mentioned it to her. That crooning voice explaining his new side line drifting down the phone as she’d sat in the old homestead she’d started to see as home. Bounties for those things that needed to be killed the most. It was a motivation for the hunters who might otherwise have drifted on by places like Mystic Falls, a way to recompense them for the time and trouble it was going to take to stamp out the pests in the town. Alix had swallowed her gorge back then, shutting her eyes against the thought. He hadn’t just been talking about a few bucks here and there, just enough to cover gas or a room at the town’s cut rate motel. Millions. A truly ludicrous amount to kill people. She hadn’t even known then that at least half of those she was going to be sent after were innocent. Even killing monsters for payment felt dirty. They were always supposed to have been doing this for the good of those who couldn’t defend themselves. Alix knew that her dad had skirted a line with that, Ralphy too, but the depths of their depravity with it had looked shallow then. She still didn’t know if her dad was involved in what was going on but given the fact that Ralphy was using him and her mom as leverage to keep her in line, she doubted it. It didn’t mean he wouldn’t turn on her if he discovered what she was, he just wasn’t likely to take any more for killing his own daughter. If her name was even on the list.
Alix still had no idea what it took to get your name on there in the first place. Ralphy would never let her see the actual thing and the only times he dropped a clue as to how much hunts were going to net him was when he either wanted to brag or sweet talk her into hunting someone. Pressing her lips together Alix nodded then shrugged, as though suddenly uncomfortable beneath the straps of her bag. ”Some might even be in the millions. Like I said, it’s all dependent on things I have no clue about.” She doubted it would be much comfort to the kid to know he was likely at the lower end of things. Some of the highest bounties she’d heard of were for those causing the most trouble, although once or twice it had been the opposite. Those must’ve made Ralphy’s day when she brought them in. The corner of her mouth twitched slightly at Declan’s words. Who knew if it had even been those guys who had put the target between his shoulder blades. ”Neither would I,” she admitted on a sigh. Hopefully she’d be able to fudge things enough with Ralphy that the next hunter wouldn’t be straight here looking for the kid. Alix knew that changing his routine wasn’t much but it was all she could suggest. A weary chuckle rolled out of her as Declan assured her that she could change things if she wanted to. ”Right now I’ve only got two choices,” she admitted hoarsely. ”Doing this or doing something that puts me right where you are.” As much as she wanted this over with, she wasn’t brave enough to do that. Pushing the thought aside, she nodded to the kid and handed him her card. ”I like to think it’s a photographer who just happens to have to hunt on the side. You really want to see what I can do, go look in the gallery in town. Surprising huh?” It was a cover most couldn’t or didn’t want to see through. Alix zipped her bag up, feeling the reassuring weight of the gun inside of it now.

Dec had thought that his day would end up being uneventful but the truth was that it had ended up being anything but. High school was stressful enough without adding anything else to the mix but now he’d ended up running into not just one hunter that had wanted to kill him but two. He didn’t doubt that the first would have succeeded if Ben hadn’t intervened, Dec had ended up staring down the barrel of a gun and his only hope had been to protect his sister. Dec had wanted to make sure that if one of them got out of there alive then it would be her but thanks to Ben they had both made it out of there in one piece, albeit Dec had taken a couple of bullets before they were able to get away. Ever since then he had been doing his best to keep his head down and not draw too much attention to himself but as it turned out it just hadn’t been enough. He hadn’t even known that there was a hit list made up of names of people who were supernatural before but he knew that he needed to warn the people that he loved and make sure that they didn’t end up getting caught off guard the way that he had done. If something happened to his family, Caroline or one of his friends he knew that he would never forgive himself so he knew that they all needed to be a lot more vigilant from now on. He had kept the run in with the first hunter from his family so that he wouldn’t end up worrying them but his friends knew the truth. Now he knew that he was going to have to come clean to them about his run in with Alix when he was ready, though, but something still told him that it was going to take time for him to feel like he was able to talk about it. He knew that he could tell Amy and Julian but when it came to the rest of the family it wasn’t as easy and he knew that he was going to have to at least try and find a way to come clean about it sooner or later. Thankfully Alix didn’t seem to want to kill him any longer, though, and for that he was grateful. He had come across a couple of hunters who lived by a different code over the last few years but there were too many who seemed happy to shoot first and ask questions later and he didn’t doubt that a lot of innocent people had lost their lives at the hands of people like that. He could have easily been the next in that long line but Alix had realised that he didn’t plan on hurting anyone and that meant a lot to him. “That’s insane,” Dec said, unable to get his head around the fact that there might be people out there whose lives were worth millions to some hunters. A reward like that was sure to be hard to resist and he hated to think who was responsible for creating the list in the first place, let alone who might be on it. As Alix said that she only had two choices right now, that she either killed the people on the list or became one of them herself, Dec found himself studying her carefully for a moment. “So you’re alright with killing potentially innocent people for money to keep your uncle happy?” he asked. He understood why, she had a lot to lose if the truth came out but so did the people whose names were on the list and that was something that he couldn’t just ignore. Dec knew that there were those on the list who might deserve it but there were sure to be others like him that didn’t so someone needed to put an end to it all. “It is,” he agreed as Alix asked if he was surprising that she worked as a photographer as well. He wasn’t too sure what he would have expected but that definitely wasn’t it. ALIX QUINN

Had Ralphy known the eventually she would break away from her family to hunt? Had that been why he’d decided to slip a leash around his niece’s neck or had he just been a greedy sadist all along? She’d always believed it was a horrible coincidence, albeit one Ralphy had made good used of, but coming to Mystic Falls had cast the scales from her eyes that she hadn’t realised were still there. Ralphy hadn’t been satisfied with just handing her over to the Dread Doctors, he’d tracked down his sister and brother-in-law, him and her dad had slaughtered both of them. The kids had been left alive, whether that was coincidence or not, Alix really wasn’t sure. If it was it was a pretty damn big one. Parents are slaughtered, Brady himself goes missing and comes back a werewolf, still not enough. Ralphy had undoubtedly gone one step further again, making sure it wasn’t just random that half of Brady’s pack was taken by the Dread Doctors. Her uncle had targeted the family time and time again. Maybe Brady’s would be the next neck wearing a leash. He’d undoubtedly fight back against it harder than she had. Alix knew she could’ve done more, risked more to get away from Ralphy but she hadn’t.
That reluctance had brought her here, left her smiling wryly at the boy’s comment. Who honestly knew how much money there was out there in the pot to be spent on slaughter the supernatural in this town, or further afield. Narrow shoulders rose and fell, her hands white knuckling as she closed them around the straps of her bag. ”Money always is,” she said on a sigh. ”Hatred too.” There was no price on that. Especially not for men like Ralphy. Just the thought of him now sickened her, bile burning in her throat, leaving her laugh husky and bordering on hysterical as the kid asked if she was alright with killing potentially innocent people. ”You think I’m doing this to make him happy?” Letting out a long breath, Alix stared off into the trees and shook her head. ”Trust me kid, that’s my last motive for doing this.” She wasn’t ‘alright’ with it, she never would be. This was force, sheer, brutal force and the knowledge that you were holding all the cards in a situation.
More than once in the last couple of months she’d questioned whether or not to just refuse point black, or even make that journey back to her family and call it done. Ralphy’s cash cow would go out the window for at least a while and those risking their necks by even talking to her would be safe. That would’ve taken guts though and she was obviously running short on those. Alix took a half step back, one corner of her mouth curling up again before the expression dropped away. ”Contrary to popular belief, hunting doesn’t typically pay the bills. Most people have a side line, whether it’s credit card fraud or substitute teaching. That’s mine. A camera’ll get you just about everywhere.” It had done, more times than she could count, including right into Derek’s bed. Pushing that thought of her mind, Alix took another step away. ”I’ll do what I can on my end, but kid, watch your back for a while? I can’t guarantee that me refusing to do this won’t blow back on you somehow. Stay safe.” Good luck to the kid on doing that. Alix made sure she’d stowed her weapon properly and then turned to head off into the trees.
