Mikey kept quiet when Chase told him Giorgia’s was going by the surname Malloy. He held back the urge to yell that he’d met her already, down at the fucking police station. He should have clocked something was off about her, especially with all her questions about what he would do if the Agnelli turned up in town, trying to bring him back in. Little did he know he was fucking speaking to one. Nemo should have kept his mouth shut. Mikey would never have gone looking for Giorgia if he wasn’t for her. Nemo had warned Mikey to keep his hands off Giorgia, but he was considering wrapping them around her neck, squeezing the truth out of her about why she was in town. He uttered none of this to Chase yet though. This woman was in his place of work and Mikey didn’t want Chase risking his job to try and get answers from Giorgia. He came up with some bullshit reason that he needed to speak to her. He said it was about his parole and had some questions for her. They told him to sit in reception while they checked if she was free. He was prepared to sit there all day waiting until she was free. If she wasn’t free today then he would come back the day after then the day after that. There was no avoiding this. He’d even turned down a coffee date with Mab to sit there in the police station. He gave her half a story saying that he’d been called in for a meeting with his probation officer. Nothing serious, just a catch up. He hated lying to her, but he didn’t want her trying to stop him from going to see Giorgia. However, he knew there was a strong chance she’d followed down to the station and sat alongside him, keeping him entertained. Instead he was just staring at the wall, trying to formulate what he was going to say to her when he walked into the room. He reminded himself he needed to stay calm because if she hit some kind of emergency button he was fucked. The cops would rush in, handcuff him and drag him away. Another twenty years. Both Mab and Chase would be furious. After an hour the door swung open and someone called out Mikey’s name, bringing him to Giorgia’s office. They tapped on the door, ushering him into the office. “Thanks.” He mumbled to the officer before walking in and taking a seat in front of Giorgia. “Thanks for seein’ me on short notice.” His eyes flicked over her face, studying her features. She’d changed over the last twenty years, but now he knew who he was speaking to, he could see it. “Y’know last time we spoke you asked me a few questions about the Angelli gang and what I would do if I knew they were in town.” He hated her patronising tone the last time they spoke but now it made sense. She was probing him for answers. “Were you askin’ them questions as Ms Malloy or Giorgia Angelli?” He kept his eyes locked on her, ready to jump to his feet if she stood up. “Why the fuck are you and Nemo here?” There was a flicker of tension in his jaw as his fingers dug into the arms on the chair. As it always did, that faint tremor rolled through Giorgia’s stomach as she walked past Chase’s office. One day he’d realise that they’d crossed paths before. A face in the distance in a New Orleans court room, eyes meeting as they’d walked past one another. Maybe he’d even remember the kid she’d been when the two of them had first entered each other’s orbit. Worse, a word in his ear from her sister, the warning that one of them was here. What semblance of a life she’d managed to build here, the thin bridges she’d managed to build with Roxana while her life had been hollowed out by Nemo’s disappearance, both shattering, leaving her standing in rubble again. The fact that he hadn’t burst into her office with hatred shining in his dark eyes was proof that Roxana hadn’t let her secret slip to her boyfriend. Both of them had dreams they were clinging onto desperately, ones that would be destroyed if the truth about their identity came out.
Slipping into her office, Giorgia closed the rest of the station out. It would have been easier to go to her office in Charlottesville, but since Nemo had returned she’d been reluctant to leave the office too often. As though he would vanish again the moment her back was turned, the things that had taken him looking to reclaim what they saw as their property. It didn’t matter that she’d held his heart since she was just a teenager, for too long he had been theirs and that love she’d held onto through so much had evaporated.
Giorgia plucked her phone from her bag, her lips curling faintly as she typed into it. ’I’ll be home in about two hours.’ Hopefully he would already have slipped through the door with the key she’d pressed into his hand that first night they’d returned home, right before she’d unbuttoned her blouse and pressed his palm over her ribs. Her moon was home, the symbol of how her life would always revolve around him needled into her skin again, flaring into view as heat had seared her skin. She would not lose him again. Third time was only the charm when it came to them having a lifetime together.
Letting out a sigh, Giorgia shoved her phone back into her bag. If she managed to clear her inbox, maybe she could shorten those two hours enough to swing by the grocery store on the way home. Gathering enough supplies that they wouldn’t have to leave the apartment this weekend if they didn’t want to. Two whole days in a cocoon with him. The smile the thought brought on lingered for a moment as her phone rang. It wouldn’t be him, not on her office phone, but she hadn’t expected it to be the front desk saying that Mikey Buckley was at the front desk either.
Fear rolled through her. The last time he’d been here it had been at her bidding. He was the one scared about what the meeting meant. Now the shoe was on the other foot and Giorgia hated it. She babbled something about being in a meeting, but really, she was just trapped in her office like an animal in a trap. Had he figured out the truth before his brother had? Mikey had been the one swayed by her step-brothers, seemingly the less intelligent Buckley brother, but Mikey had also been under the Agnelli thumb long enough to maybe be able to recognise it when it sat opposite him in expensive clothes.
Twice she walked to her office door, as though slipping out the rear door of the station was an option. She could, her email would still be there on Monday. It would meant feeling like she had to keep running though, always avoiding a man who had a right to demand answers, even if it would possible cost her so much to answer them. Eventually she’d picked the phone up and told the desk sergeant to send him through. Mikey was just as capable as she was of sniffing out her fears, she just hoped to God that he wouldn’t be looking for them today.
Sitting bolt upright in her seat, Giorgia offered the deputy that showed him in a faint smile. ”Thank you,” she murmured as they closed the door. Her gaze met Mikey’s then, her lips pressed together as though that would hide her anxiety. ”It’s no problem,” she said lightly. ”I always have time for my parolees.” As though she were some extension of their parole officer and not just a woman who only cared about one single former prisoner. There it was. Giorgia fought not to flinch at the sound of the name she still bore. She should have burned that away instead of the tattoo, although Pat’s name was no better now. ”I remember,” Giorgia said tightly. ”Have they been in touch?” She wouldn’t have put it past Emiliano to send someone else out when Nemo had vanished from his thoughts the same way he had hers. Unfortunately he would never stop coming for Mikey, the man’s hatred was a life sentence.
”I don’t know who you’re…” Confusing her with. The lie stuck fast in her throat as Nemo’s name rang out. ”Do you think you’re the only one who’s left New Orleans to try and find a new life, Mikey?” Giorgia asked tightly. ”Do you think I was sent here just to drag you back? If I had been I could’ve had you behind bars already. One word in your parole officer’s ear and I can have all of this taken away.” She swept her hand out like she was indicating his life here. The moment she would’ve done, Chase and Roxxi would have come down on her like a ton of bricks. The damage she’d done brought back three fold on her.
