Senior year was upon her and Hayden honestly felt like she was buried beneath a mountain of books half the time. She had always known that college was going to be tough but she hadn’t realised that it could be like this. She still saw Liam a lot and she regularly caught up with Jas, Val and the pack as well but between classes and soccer, Hayden didn’t tend to have as much free time as she would like at the moment. She knew that in a few months it would all be over, finals would have come and gone and she would be free to enjoy her time at last but that felt like a lifetime away at the moment. She knew it had been like this the year before for Scott and the others who were older than she was and she hadn’t envied them for it then. Hayden had always been a good student and she hated it if she didn’t manage to get top marks so it meant making sure that she put the work in to get them. Truth be told it was a little difficult to focus on school with everything else that was going on right now. Danny was still gone, they hadn’t found a way to locate him or bring him back yet but she wasn’t giving up hope. A virus was sweeping through Mystic Falls targeting anyone who was supernatural and she knew that Stefan had been affected by it and she also couldn’t shake the feeling that someone other than Danny was missing from their group, even if she couldn’t put her finger on who that was. Add to that the fact that Derek was still hell bent on tracking down the Dread Doctors and putting a stop to what they were doing once and for all and it was a lot to say the least. There were times when Hayden found herself missing the old days when things were so much simpler, there was a time when she hadn’t known about the supernatural and she hadn’t had to worry about any of this but being brought to Mystic Falls by the Dread Doctors and turned into a chimera had brought Liam and Jasper back into her life and Hayden knew that she was never going to regret that. The pack had become her family and she knew that she was always going to be there when they needed her no matter how messy or complicated things might get at times. She’d had some good friends around her while she was growing up but none like this and she knew better than to take that for granted. These were people who would lay down their lives for each other and Hayden knew that she would do the same for them if she had to. She hoped it would never come to that for any of them but it was still good to know that there were people around that she could count on. That day she had decided that it was time for a break for a while and since Liam was spending time with Scott, Val had work and Jas was off doing his own thing, that meant that Hayden was at a bit of a loose end. She’d had some classes that morning and had spent some time studying after that but she knew that she was going to go crazy if she didn’t get out for a bit so she headed to the Grill and offered Erica a smile as the girl showed her to an empty table. Hayden knew the menu well enough by now to know what she wanted to have and she placed her order without hesitation, sliding the drink closer to her once it had been brought over before taking a sip. She wasn’t sure whether any of her friends were going to be around but if she was honest it was still nice to be out for a while and she knew that she might as well make the most of it while she could. ”I’ll be back in about an hour. If he wants to stop by again after that, I can see him. If not he’s gonna have to make an appointment.” Dylan pushed through the front door of the Grill, glad he could put his return to the office off at least that long. His assistant had aways been a great guard dog, never afraid to draw the line with clients. Having Allison working for him meant there was somebody else there when he couldn’t be, like on those mornings when he’d been in court first thing. In an ideal world he’d have been out of there by ten, already heading back to the office, but things never worked like that. There’d been a series of delays that meant his client wasn’t called until eleven. It had taken another hour to get him bailed out and for him to get back to town. If he’d headed straight back to the office, it would’ve put him at the office just in time for one of his needier clients to see him walking back in. He felt bad for leaving Allison to deal with it, but he’d take her lunch back to the office after he’d finally made up for his skipped breakfast as an apology. ”Thanks, Allison. You’re a life safer. I’ll see you soon.”
Grinding his finger and thumb into his eyes as he worked his way towards a table he’d seen was empty from the door. If he had any good luck at all today, it would be that Mrs Lindsay wouldn’t want to wait around in the office for him to come back. She always made it just how busy she was, as though she was the only one in the world with anything going on. He’d grab a burger now, then get back and relieve Allison either way. She’d been worth her weight in gold since she’d started working for him – something he still had to thank Nate for. The administrative load had been eased enough that he wasn’t in the office til 9 every evening. He still had to handle everything in court, but if Allison really did want to attend law school and take the bar he had a chance of turning the business into a two layer affair.
Dylan puffed out a breath and dumped his bag onto an empty seat before he opened his eyes. He stopped dead as he saw the girl at the table and was immediately grabbing for it again. ”Sorry. I thought it was unoccupied. I’ll grab myself another seat if you want? That’s what I get for not paying attention.” Chuckling ruefully, Dylan swept his bag up onto his shoulder. He started sweeping a look around. The place wasn’t as empty as he’d thought. With lunch time spreading into the afternoon the place would probably clear out in a little while, but for now it was a matter of slim pickings. He could always sit at the bar he guessed, make the meal a little quicker than he’d planned and hope that Mrs Lindsay had cleared out by the time he got back.
