Rowan waited out on the sidewalk until Ingrid’s car pulled out of sight. The mood inside of it was probably already turning frigid – putting Luc on her service always felt like a risk, but he’d proved himself again and again – both would cope until the meeting finished and they were hopefully back at the hotel tonight, though. Pulling her phone from her purse she checked the report from their staff mechanic that had been sent in the moment he’d checked the vehicle that morning. Everything in pristine condition. If anything did go wrong this time then the mechanic could try and plead his due diligence, but his head would likely still roll.
The orders had been passed through the rest of the team that morning. They were scattered amongst a dozen jobs in town now, word of the company spreading in the way she imagined Ingrid had hoped it would when the decision had been made to open another branch in Virginia (in a far quieter spot than DC). Politics tended to keep the people with power in DC, but even the busiest lobbyist took a break every now and then. Just like her.
Taking an hour out for lunch was probably a risk, but with Ingrid gone and their operatives busy, she was gonna take the chance. The cafeteria at the office handled things for most of their staff and she ate there most days that she wasn’t on the move with Ingrid. Going there would’ve meant ending up neck deep in more work, though. Today was too nice for that.
Christmas might have been over and done with already, but the town was still busy. Stores were still all lit up, the decorations here were probably going to cling on until Valentine’s day at this rate. Folks were out on the street enjoying the clear skies and crisp, cool weather, making the most of the lull that seemed to come between Christmas and New Year’s – although not always in her line of work.
She bypassed both the Grill and the Diner when she saw how busy both were and ducked into the coffee shop instead. At this point her blood was probably fifty percent caffeine anyway. Rowan shot the barista a smile and gestured towards the glass cabinets that stretched along the counter. ”Hi, can I get a triple shot latte and a toasted ham and cheese croissant, to have in, thanks,” Rowan murmured. The woman slipped her croissant into the press to melt the cheese as she paid, the coffee appearing only a minute later at the end of the counter.
With the barista’s promise to bring the croissant over, Rowan headed amongst the tables to try and find a seat. The place wasn’t as crowded as the other restaurants had been, but she was still over by the window before she thought she’d found an empty table. She rounded another and paused, grinning as she realised it wasn’t empty – but it wasn’t all bad news.
”Hi,” she said as she paused by the table and looked down at Julian. ”I was hoping I’d run into you again. Did you get any of the cookies I dropped off?” His brother had promised he’d make sure Julian got them, but she hadn’t wanted to pester either of them to check about it. She’d figured eventually one of their people would end up at the hospital again and then she’d have a valid reason to be drifting around the hallways, keeping an eye out for Doctor Leroux again.

Days off were rare for Julian these days but if anything that just made him want to enjoy them when they did come around and it certainly made him realise just how much he missed them. He always had to make sure that he had the night of the full moon off and if he had to work the following day then he always made sure he didn’t start too early but other than that he tried to make sure that he was around when he was needed. He didn’t have commitments like some of the other doctors did, he didn’t have a girlfriend or kids who needed him and that meant that he normally ended up covering for his colleagues when they needed to change a shift. He had his siblings to look out for and he had Brady and the pack to think about but that was different. Julian had realised a long time ago that he wanted to become a doctor and he knew that he was making a difference but he also knew that he needed to start making sure that he had more time for a personal life as well. For far too long his life had been all about work and that was what had needed to happen while he’d progressed his career but now he was getting older and he knew that he wanted more out of life so it was time to start making a change, no matter how difficult that might be. He had made sure he’d had some time off over Christmas to spend with his family but he had already started back at work and he knew that he would most likely get called in on New Year’s so that was something that he definitely wasn’t looking forward to. It was normally chaos around that time and there was a part of him that thought that it might be his turn to call in a favour for a change but he knew that he would want a good reason to do that so it wasn’t something he had done just yet. As it was he’d agreed to catch up with Brady over lunch but by the time Julian got to the garage to pick his friend up, Brady was up to his eyes in jobs that had just come in and he couldn’t get away. Shrugging it off, Julian promised that they would catch up another time before heading off on his own. He could see that the Grill and Diner were both busy, everyone making the most of the time between Christmas and New Year’s it seemed, so he found himself heading in the direction of the coffee shop instead. He didn’t tend to spend as much time there as he did the Grill but it was good enough when the Grill was busy and he was hungry so it would have to do. Joining the queue, Julian placed his order and took his coffee, offering the barista a smile as she promised that his food would be brought over when it was ready if he wanted to go and find a table. Julian was lucky to find that one was just becoming available as he rounded a corner, the only empty table in the place it seemed, and he quickly claimed it before anyone else could. Sitting down in one of the chairs, he took a sip of his coffee and was scrolling through his phone when he heard a familiar voice and he looked up to find Rowan standing before him. “Hi,” he said, setting his phone aside and offering her a smile. “You mean did my brother eat them all before I got home?” he chuckled. “No he didn’t, he’s a good kid. He saved them for when I got back and I shared them with the family,” he admitted as he took another sip of his drink. “You really didn’t have to do that but thank you. It was very kind of you,” he said sincerely. “You’re welcome to sit down, if you’d like.”ROWAN BISHOP

Sticking with a life on the road after her parents had died had probably kept her sane. The travelling, the constant work, the training that Ingrid had pushed her into, it had taken her mind off of what had happened. It gave her a different sort of focus and for that Rowan was going to be eternally grateful. Her parents had been peaceful people, happy to travel the world, carrying the message of peace with them instead of sticking to their packs. Forget territories, they’d seen the world as theirs and she’d wanted to keep all of that up when they were no longer with her. Rowan wasn’t sure she could say her life had been peaceful since then, but every time she was forced to use the training Ingrid and her people had put her through it had been with the intent to save another life. She supposed as long as she held onto that belief she was still following in their footsteps.
In Julian she had seen a man trying to do the same. He hadn’t needed to talk to her that day at the hospital, but he’d taken the time to help with the vending machine and his reassurances afterwards. Maybe any doctor in the place would’ve done it if they hadn’t been called away, but it hadn’t been anybody else that day, it had been him. Seeing it as a step beyond what he’d had to do, she’d tracked him down. The cookies had been intentional, a thank you that had hopefully been passed along. She’d have left it there, but as she so often did in this town she’d found herself facing someone who she’d met in passing again. It should have come as such a surprise when Mystic Falls was such a tiny spot on the map.
Rowan grinned as she stopped by the side of his table, the one she’d about to snatch in the busy room, nodding to him as he answered her question. ”That was what was on my mind,” she admitted. ”That was good of him, and kind of you. He was sweet enough not to tell me that stopping by was stepping over the line.” He’d been polite and honest, a combination she always appreciated. In her line of work there was too much subterfuge for her tastes sometimes. Everything was a secret, locked down by a non-disclosure agreement. For someone who’d always been so open with her emotions it had taken some getting used to.
Lifting her cup to her lips Rowan sipped at her coffee. With the three shots it was strong, but undoubtedly her system would burn through it rapidly. Unlike some of the operatives, she couldn’t just cling on to coffee all day and trust it to keep her going. For now it was just the perfect accompaniment to lunch, a little buzz that she could feel in chest as Julian thanked her. Rowan gestured to him with her cup. [”You’re welcome. You went out of your way for me that day, I wanted to show you how much it was appreciated. Thanks.” Dipping her head, flashing him a grateful smile, she settled into the seat opposite him. ”You’re not working today?” Like hers, she imagined Julian’s schedule wasn’t a settled 9 to 5. Most people didn’t understand what it was like to have to rush out in the middle of the night for an emergency or to work twelve days straight.
