Raf knew he was lucky that he had a safe place to stay at the Salvatore School but he also knew that it wouldn’t be that way forever. The years were going by far too quickly for his liking, he was already attending the college and he didn’t doubt that before he knew it he would be graduating again. Sooner or later he and Landon were going to have to be able to stand on their own two feet but that meant needing money. Raf was a hybrid now which meant that he could compel people if he wanted to but the truth was that he didn’t want to have to do that if he could help it. Raf would be the first to admit that he wasn’t very good at trusting adults, he had bounced around from one crappy foster home to the next for such a long time that he had learned to always be on his guard. Some of his foster parents had been abusive and others had just been downright assholes but either way Raf had learned to toughen up quickly because the truth was that it was the only way he could stay alive. Thankfully he was out of that life now but he knew that he wanted to make sure that he could find a way to provide for himself and Landon that wouldn’t involve relying on others. Raf didn’t doubt that Dr S would have insisted on helping if he knew but he had already done so much for them and Raf knew that he didn’t want it to look like he was taking advantage. He had always been resourceful and that hadn’t changed so he’d managed to do a few odd jobs to build up some money over the last years or two before finally landing himself a job at the Grill. Odd jobs weren’t ideal but they were flexible and Raf had found it helped being able to pick and choose what he wanted to do especially while he was getting used to controlling his bloodlust after becoming a hybrid. For a long time Raf had struggled with it to the point where he hadn’t trusted himself around anyone but Josie had finally found out why that was – he had lunar psychosis. In him it had presented itself as an inability to control his bloodlust and ever since then he had been doing his best to manage it. It had been over a year since then and now Raf was doing much better than he had been so a few months ago he had applied for a job at the Grill and fortunately Evangeline had offered him one. The pay wasn’t great but it was enough for what Raf needed and he was able to save some each month to go towards a place for the two of them so he knew that that was all that mattered. Deep down he still felt guilty about losing control and killing Landon, they weren’t related by blood but they were the only family the other had and that meant the world to both of them. Raf hadn’t felt any pain like he had felt after killing his brother and he had sworn that he wasn’t going to let anything like that happen again. Thankfully Landon was a phoenix and it just so happened that was how they had figured that particular mystery out but it still didn’t change what Raf had done. He was doing his best to live with that, though, and he knew that he couldn’t do anything more than that. Clearing one of the tables, Raf groaned as he spotted some of the guys he used to go to school with at Mystic Falls High before he transferred to the Salvatore School. Even though it had happened a while ago they still didn’t like that he’d transferred and they had taken to giving him a hard time about it. That hadn’t changed even now and despite doing his best to ignore them, they decided that they were going to start pushing him around and Raf’s nails dug hard into the palms of his hands as he did his best to keep his temper under control. It was with gritted teeth that he finished clearing the table he was working on and he took everything through to the kitchen before unfastening his apron. “I’m going to take my break now,” he said, setting his apron down on top of the bar before heading outside, keeping his head down to hide his eyes which he was sure had turned blue and doing his best to get his breathing under control so he could calm down before he did something that he regretted. ”Don’t forget the extra cheese. And the milkshake. Banana.”
Maya tipped her head back as her order was met with silence. She looked at him almost upside down over the back of the couch, dark curls spilling almost down to the floor as she returned his grin with one of her own. Oh, she wasn’t rueful in the least.
”You sure that’s everything? I’m not gonna get a text when I get there to give me some extra instructions?”
She pursed her lips then chuckled and straightened up. ”I think that’s it, get moving probie.” It didn’t matter that he hadn’t been the lowest man on the ladder for a year now, Maya still liked to remind him of how much of a newbie he was at the firehouse, one that she’d helped nurture and his appreciation of it was gonna show in the burger, and the curly fries, and the shake. He was gonna have to hustle back if he didn’t wanna be leaving behind a trail of melting milkshake.
The sun was still up as he stepped out of the back door of Maya’s apartment building. Of course that meant that it painted the alleyway behind the building in all its glory. Unlike the ones further away from the square, this one was kept relatively clean at least. Its proximity to the businesses that stretched along all sides of the square meant that the rubbish trucks patrolled it almost daily. Trash cans and dumpsters were emptied, businesses hosed down their space and it meant that the people who lived close benefited from it all too.
Unlike the mansion Maya’s place was lived in and comfortable. The building was full of families, the feel of the place warm and welcoming, not marble cold and echoing empty while Tyler wasn’t there. Mason’s smile fell away slightly as he made his way towards the Grill. If Tyler was at Whitmore, getting his head down to try and make the most of his future without what he was getting in the way then he’d put up with living back home. If he was in Niklaus Mikaelson’s grip, then none of us would’ve been worth it. Coming back to town against everything he’d said when his left had been all about keeping Tyler out of trouble, but he’d plunged neck deep instead. At least when he came up for air, he’d have him and his friends there to help pull him out.
He wondered if Matt was gonna be at the Grill, if he’d have a couple of minutes to catch up while his order was put together. They’d promised to keep each other in the loop, but maybe some little bit of contact with Tyler had slipped his mind. People got busy, their good intentions slipped until something reminded them.
Holding onto that hope, Mason headed towards the Grill from the rear of the block, intending on skirting down the alleyway a few doors down and coming in the front door of the place. He turned the corner though and a kid was there at the rear of the building, head dipped, breathing uneven. Mason frowned faintly, studying him as he approached. Not someone he recognised, but he’d been out of town for long enough that he probably didn’t know half the folks that lived here anymore.
”Hey, man, you doing OK?” he called out as he approached. His brows knit together faintly, concern pinching at his expression as he got closer. ”You work at the Grill right? You just out here taking a break or…” Mason let the question hang. The woman running the place now seemed to have a good crew working for her, people who watched out for one another. If anything was wrong, someone inside probably knew, but he couldn’t shake that feeling in his gut that something was up.

Raf had grown so used to things not going his way that now things seemed to be getting a bit better he constantly felt like he was waiting for the other shoe to drop. His parents had died when he was young and he had grown up in foster care which hadn’t been easy at all. He had gone from one abusive home to another and each time it had felt like there was never going to be any light at the end of the tunnel but then Hector and Maria had taken him in and for the first time he had gained a brother. He knew that things would have been so different without Landon, the two of them had looked out for each other ever since that very first day but there had been certain things that Raf had kept from his brother like the fact that he had taken the brunt of Hector’s anger so that Landon wouldn’t have to. Raf had become good at covering up the bruises and even better at hiding what was really going on inside that house. He hadn’t kept what he had become from Landon when he had triggered his werewolf curse, though, and he knew that that was a good thing. He wouldn’t have been able to make it through any of this without his brother by his side and he was truly grateful that he had Landon in his life. Even now he still carried the guilt of what he had done with him, he had killed Cassie when he had triggered his curse and after he became a hybrid he had lost control and killed his own brother. Raf knew that he had innocent blood on his hands and he wasn’t sure that he was ever going to be able to forgive himself for that but he was at least doing his best to move on from it. With everything that was going on with Ben’s father right now Raf had plenty to keep him busy but he also had a normal life to try and keep intact. He had been working at the Grill for a while now and it helped having a way to earn some money. The pay wasn’t great but he knew that it could be much worse so he didn’t really mind. His boss knew what he was and was flexible when it came to shifts when he needed her to be so he knew that he was actually pretty lucky. Unfortunately working there meant that he had to deal with some of the guys he used to go to school with from time to time. There was a time when Raf had been good friends with them but he had pulled away after Cassie died and he triggered his curse and he knew that they saw him transferring to the Salvatore School as him betraying them. It hadn’t been that way at all as he had simply been doing what was best for him and Landon but they weren’t to know that and he couldn’t tell them either so he knew that he just had to deal with it. They still knew how to push his buttons, though, and after putting up with it for so long Raf knew that he needed to take a break and get some air before he lost his temper and did something that he was going to regret. He had only been out there for a couple of minutes and he was still trying to get his breathing under control when a voice sounded and Raf nodded. “I’m fine,” he lied, keeping his head down while he tried to get himself under control knowing that his eyes were glowing blue to signal that he had taken a life even without being able to see them himself. “Yeah, that’s right. I just needed to get some air so I’m on my break,” he said as he squeezed his eyes shut tightly to hide them from the man while he tried to get his breathing under control, hoping that the guy would leave him to it. “I’m fine, honestly. You can head on inside, I’ll be in soon.”MASON LOCKWOOD

If it hadn’t been for Katherine trying to drag him back to town, Mystic Falls and everybody in it would’ve carried on not being his problem. He’d have brushed off his sister-in-law’s calls, leaving the family to handle the problems that Richard had created. It’d been one of his brother’s favourite phrases, tossed in his face a thousand times when he’d been growing up. You’ve made your bed, now you can lie in it. In the end Mason had chosen to make his a thousand miles away from home.
Katherine had tracked him down there, trying to make Mystic Falls his problem again and him Niklaus Mikaelson’s problem. It would’ve taken the heat off of her, but when it came down to it he dug his heels in and resisted. Dozens of times since he’d cursed that decision. He could’ve gone anywhere else in the world afterwards, but guilt had brought him back here. Between Tyler, Carol and Maya guilt had become duty, willing shouldered duty. Maybe his parents would’ve been proud – not that he’d ever tried to make that happen – in contrast Richard probably would’ve been rolling in his grave. His little brother helping to keep his son out of trouble (not that he’d done a great job of that), while he helped out the people in this town that were definitely below them.
On the job you pitched in, running into whatever situation was thrown your way. You didn’t stop to ask for names or bank balances, you didn’t make it about who you were and how many steps above them on the social ladder you were, you just saved lives. Mason didn’t think the kid who was lurking out back of the Grill needed him to do that, but the mental alarm bells had started to ring the moment he caught sight of him. Forget Spiderman and his tingle, he was a werewolf and a trained firefighter and both sets of instincts were telling him that something was up.
He approached, frowning, but still pasting on that veneer of friendly. If he had to he could make the whole thing official, pull the ‘I’m a firefighter, you need to let me help you’ card. He knew how antsy that made people though, so as the kid agreed with what he’d asked, Mason was already bringing his hands up, like he was warding off the idea of trouble.
”I imagine it’s hell in there when it gets busy. The noise alone’s gotta get to you after a while.” It’d never stopped him from spending all night on a stool at the bar, but it was different when you had to be there. He could hear the ragged edge to the kid’s breathing and from the tight lines of his face thought that the kid was screwing his eyes shut. Was it denial, just like it had been when he’d found Tyler after the full moon? Maybe, but the noxious emotional edge to the air meant he wasn’t gonna take anything for granted.
Mason shook his head as he took another step closer. His hands were slipping into his pockets, but he was still wary about triggering the kid somehow. ”You don’t sound fine to me. You having trouble breathing? I work at the firehouse, I can help if you are. You wanna try slowing it down? Inhale for four, hold your breath a moment…” he started, launching into the same method they used to get people stabilised when they had to pull them out of a wreck or get them out of a structure when things were ready to flare up. It sounded ridiculous, but those measured beats of inhalations and exhalations actually helped.

Raf knew he was doing a lot better at controlling himself than he had been when he first became a hybrid. Landon had tried to help him back then and Raf had lost control when his brother deliberately cut himself to test Raf's control. That had been a huge mistake as he had ended up losing control and killing Landon and to this day he still carried that guilt with him. It had made him more determined than ever to learn how to control himself and even though he was doing better now, the truth was that he still had bad days sometimes. He had come so close to giving in to those who had doubted him, so many of the students at the Salvatore School had started saying he didn't belong there with them after he became a hybrid and started struggling with control and after killing Landon he had been set to leave the school so he could figure it out on his own but his friends had brought him back and they had stood by him. They weren’t afraid of him, in fact they had even figured out why he found it so difficult to stay in control, and he was so grateful to them for that. His type of Lunar Psychosis was no joke, every day was a challenge for Raf but all he could ever do was try his best. Sticking around meant that Raf needed a way of making some money and working at the Grill was that way. Evangeline had taken a chance on him and she was always understanding if he had to change a shift at the last minute but he tried not to do that too often if he could help it. It helped that she kept a few bloodbags in the fridge in her office and she had made it clear that he could help himself if he ever needed to but Raf knew that he needed to at least try and figure this out on his own so so far he had managed to resist. Now there was a part of him that was tempted but he had managed to make it outside so he could get some fresh air instead. He had thought that he'd found a secluded spot but someone had found him anyway and Raf tried to focus on just about anything else as he tried to get his bloodlust under control. Keeping his eyes shut and trying to get his breathing under control normally did the trick but this time it was proving to be more difficult. Perhaps it was due to the fact that he could literally hear the guy's heart beating, he wasn't sure, but either way Raf didn't completely trust himself right now. Raf knew he was lucky that Landon was a phoenix as it meant that he had come back after he'd died but since then Raf hadn't even come close to hurting one of his friends. It was different with them, he knew that they were all supernatural so being around them was soothing but this guy was a stranger so his presence seemed to be having the opposite affect even though Raf knew that he was only trying to help. "You're right about that. Most of the time people aren't too bad but there are some who love being difficult," Raf admitted, trying to focus on that for a moment rather than the fact that the self-control he did have could slip through his fingers at any moment. "That's why I came out here, I like the quiet," he added. He was used to being around a group whenever he was with his friends but that day one of his former classmates from Mystic Falls High had deliberately tried pushing his buttons and unfortunately it had worked. What Raf needed right now was to be left alone but the guy seemed determined to try and help him and before he knew it his eyes were flying open and shining blue as he looked at the man - not quite the blue of a werewolf that had taken a life, they were something else. "I said I'm fine," he said, his voice almost a growl as he spoke. Realising what he had done, he squeezed his eyes tightly shut once more and tried to get his breathing under control like the man had said. "Sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you," he said between breaths. "I know you're only trying to help," he added, his brain already scrabbling for a way to explain the colour of his eyes if he needed to. MASON LOCKWOOD

Lockwoods don’t get their hands dirty.
The first day at the fire academy, smeared with soot from the first fire simulation they’d been thrown into, Mason had almost laughed out loud as Richard’s voice had run through his head. For him and generations of Lockwoods before him that had pretty much been true. Sitting behind a lawyer’s desk or strolling around the halls of the town hall didn’t leave you with a sink full of black water when you went to wash up. Your hands were soft and delicate, unused to the sort of work that the rest of the world did just to get by. Richard’s had probably been soft as a baby’s when he’d turned on the device that had killed him in the end. He’d been trying to teach Tyler that you didn’t have to stand down in the filth with everybody else. It was bullshit and Richard had drowned in that hypocrisy with his last breath.
Despite the money in his pocket, Mason had always tried not to look at the rest of this people in this town the same way his family had. Maya’s family had been flat ass broke and she’d raised her siblings almost entirely on her own. His parents had hated their friendship, but he’d clung on, rebuilding it after he’d come back. He guessed he could’ve said the same for all the people who’d worked at the Grill over the years. They might’ve been putting food and drinks in front of you, but they absolutely weren’t your servants. They were normal people, struggling exactly the same way your own family did, only most of the time they were willing to admit it.
So far the kid wasn’t, but Mason had seen the flash of his eyes. He knew there was more going on here than there seemed to be on the surface, and he wasn’t about to walk away from it. ”I know the type,” Mason admitted. ”My brother was one of them. I try and make up for it when I can.” Only this kid had absolutely no reason to believe that yet. Instead of looking away, Mason kept his eyes on him, wanting to know if and when he had to step in closer. ”I get that. I used to live down near the beach in Florida, the early mornings before anyone else was down there on the sand were always my favourite. Just quiet and space and nobody else bothering you.” Like he was now. If he honestly thought it was just quiet the kid needed he’d have already been inside the Grill, leaving him to it.
It wasn’t the first time he’d seen bright blue eyes on a werewolf. His own glowed the same colour with every full moon and so did Tyler’s now. Mason pressed his lips together and shook his head, remaining calm as the kid growled at him. ”You’re not fine,” he said quietly. The bright blue irises disappeared behind closed lids again, the kid started to fight his breathing again. ”I am. That’s why I can’t walk away. I know exactly how this feels. You’re not the only one who’s gone through it. It took me a year to feel like I had it under control and wasn’t gonna hurt someone.” Like Jimmy. Mason took another step towards Raf, letting his own eyes glow blue. ”Open your eyes,” he said quietly, trying to get him to see that they weren’t that different.

Raf hadn’t known about the supernatural world before he had triggered his werewolf curse by accidentally killing his girlfriend. Going through that first full moon was one of the most difficult things he’d ever had to do but he had managed it and after that he had learned to control himself. It had helped having Landon and Hope by his side and he knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through it without the two of them. They had never given up on him even after he died with Hope’s blood in his system and became a hybrid thanks to his name being placed on the hit list. Landon tried showing him that he was strong enough to resist the urge to feed by cutting himself to prove it and Raf had ended up killing him. He hadn’t felt like he belonged at the school after that and he had let the bullies who kept on saying that get inside his head but his friends had talked him into changing his mind. They had promised to help him and they had kept that promise but even now there were still times when he struggled. Being a hybrid was different to being a werewolf, everything was heightened and the bloodlust was stronger than anything that Raf had ever known before. He knew that it wasn’t like this for all hybrids, his lunar psychosis made it more difficult for him to control himself than it should be but most days it wasn’t so bad. That day some of the guys from his old school had really ended up pushing his buttons, though, and as much as Raf knew it would make him feel better to rip them limb from limb he knew that he would never forgive himself if he hurt them so all he could do was get away. That wasn’t particularly easy considering that he was still in the middle of his shift, though. He knew that Evangeline would understand considering she knew what he was but he didn’t want to let her down so he knew that he needed to get himself under control before heading back inside. “There’s a lot of them around here too,” Raf nodded. He had seen more than his fair share over the years given that he’d grown up in foster care and had never stayed in one place for too long and he had thought he had escaped this particular group when he’d transferred schools but it turned out he was wrong. Right now Raf knew that he wanted to be left alone so that he could get this under control and get back to work but the guy didn’t seem like he was about to let that happen. A part of Raf wanted to scare him off but he knew that he couldn’t risk letting him know what he was. His name had already ended up on the hit list once and he’d become a hybrid because of that, he didn’t even want to think about what might happen next time. “I’ve never seen the sea,” Raf admitted. He had always wanted to but it had never seemed like a possibility for him. Before he moved to Mystic Falls he had bounced around different homes so much but this time was different. He wasn’t living with his foster parents Hector and Maria any longer but he had a home at the Salvatore School and for the first time in his life he was settled. “Why would you give that up to move here?” he asked in spite of himself, unable to deny that he was curious. Truth be told the distraction was helping a little as well but he was still worried about losing control and hurting the guy so he knew that he couldn’t let his guard down just yet. He hadn’t meant to lose it and snap at the man like that but the damage was done and as the guy spoke again, he seemed more determined than ever. As he said he knew exactly how it felt, Raf couldn’t deny that he was surprised. He thought he knew all of the hybrids that were in town at least by sight but now he couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps he was wrong after all. He hesitated for a moment as he was told to open his eyes but in the end Raf realised that if the guy really wasn’t going to leave him to it then he was going to have to take that leap of faith and let him in. Raf knew that this could be a trick but if it was then he knew that he would find a way out of it. For the first time since his parents died he had people in his life that he loved and they were counting on him so he knew that leaving them wasn’t an option. Taking a deep breath, he opened his eyes and was a little surprised to see that the guy’s eyes were glowing blue in return but it wasn’t quite the same blue as his – they were the blue that his used to be before he became a hybrid. “I thought maybe you did know how this feels but you can’t,” he said, letting the veins appear under his eyes to show the man that he wasn’t just a werewolf, at least not any longer. “I learned how to control my werewolf side years ago but this is different. Everything is heightened and there’s something else going on with me that makes control more difficult now,” he explained. He didn’t want to bore the guy with the details, after all he didn’t even know him, but the fact that he was a werewolf meant that he didn’t have to worry about hurting the guy at least. “I’m Raf,” he said, his breathing starting to ease a little as he held a hand out to the man. By tracking him down in Miami, Katherine had proved that there was no leaving Mystic Falls behind. It hadn’t been his intention to head back there any time soon. Life had seemed infinitely better without the pressure of his family name. Nobody down there cared that his ancestors had helped found some tiny little speck on the map in Virginia. He was Mason, the guy who’d help you move, always ready with a grin and a joke. The guy who’d be out on the waves the minute they were running well. He’d shrugged off all his other roles in life and in the end that’d come back to bite him. There were times when he still longed for that life, but thanks to Katherine, Mason knew he’d never have it. What he needed to do was stay here and work on those things that had been broken for too long, including his relationship with Tyler.
For a moment Mason wondered whether Tyler was behind the trouble someone had been giving this kid, but Tyler was probably miles away at Whitmore, getting out of his depth in another way. Apologising for his past mistakes wasn’t gonna do anything for him. Mason huffed out a breath through his nose and nodded at him. ”There are, and sometimes there aren’t many ways to get away from them,” he admitted. He’d found his, but really all he’d done was put off his problems for a little while. Miami was still out there, giving off its siren’s call whenever he had a rough day. ”It’s worth seeing,” Mason murmured. ”A couple of hours in a car and you’d be at the shore.” Not in Florida, but even Virginia had some decent beaches. As the kid asked why he was here, not there, Mason let out a sigh and shook his head. It wasn’t like he’d had much of a choice, but he wasn’t telling this guy that. ”I moved back for family,” he admitted. ”They needed me. It’s what you’re meant to do for family.” Sacrificing what you wanted for them. If only he hadn’t learned that so late in life. Seeing a little of Tyler in the kid and his struggles to get himself back under control, Mason for himself rooted to the spot. He could’ve walked away at the start and left him to it, but that wasn’t the sort of person he was anymore. Trying to do for him what he hadn’t for Tyler right back at the start, Mason asked him to open his eyes, to see that he really did get what was happening. His own eyes still shone blue as he opened his eyes. He huffed out a breath as the kid went to deny that similarity, but the next breath locked in his throat. Mason swallowed hard, lifting a hand like he could ward off the denials. ”Maybe we’re not exactly the same, but I do get it,” he promised. ”One of those people I came back for is just like you.” Because Klaus Mikaelson had got his claws into Tyler, like if he couldn’t have one Lockwood, then he’d have another.
”How long ago did it happen?” Mason asked lightly as his eyes went back to their usual pale green. He reached out for the hand that was offered to him. ”Whenever something major like this happens you have to adjust. It doesn’t matter that you learned to control one thing before, it’s always gonna be different after.” That was something that had taken him too long to figure out and he’d pushed Tyler too hard while he was figuring it out. ”I’m Mason … Lockwood. Do you know the other hybrids?” Klaus seemed to be turning them into his own private army by the looks of things, so there was a chance he knew what had happened with Tyler.
