As smug as Luc was, he’d probably crow from the rooftop about her misappropriating their systems if he found out that she’d used their access to various databases to look up Doctor Leroux’s address in town. It hadn’t been anything more than she could’ve found in the purely public databases, she’d just gone about it the easy way. Rowan had informed her assistant that she’d be back in an hour or two and had headed out of the office before Luc could sniff out the tiny faux pas the same way pigs did truffles, with about as much grace as one too. What Ingrid had ever seen in the guy, she didn’t know.
Ten minutes later she was pulling away from the curb outside of the small bakery on the square. The smell of fresh baked cookies filled the car, a thousand times better than the ones you could pick up at the Coffee Bean and about three times the price of theirs too. It was worth it though. Doctor Leroux had gotten her out of a bit of a bind at the hospital – when her concern for Dominguez had tried to override her self-control – and that sort of thing deserved a proper thank you. One that didn’t come with a dozen of his coworkers rubber necking the conversation and likely picking the white cardboard box clean of the cookies she’d picked out from the glass cabinet. Everybody liked chocolate right?
The couple of years they’d spent in town had left her familiar with much of the town – Ingrid made sure that all of her people made themselves fully acquainted with where they ended up stationed, making it clear that they needed to know just how to get out of any sticky situation there at high speed. Mystic Falls was a sleepy looking little place, surrounded by picturesque woods, but it hid a darkness, and that was one of the reasons why they were still here. Ingrid’s family was the other. That was none of her business, just the same as Ingrid’s relationship with Luc wasn’t either, but as Ingrid’s second-in-command, she had to know some of what went on. It didn’t mean that the two of them lived in each other’s pockets. If they did Ingrid would’ve been aware of just where she was going the minute she’d left the office.
When she found the right road minutes later, Rowan wondered whether this visit would be garden fence gossip before the day was out. Their people, even the guy who ran the Grey Haven – where her and Ingrid had been staying since they’d first around in town – were all discrete, but it didn’t mean everybody in town was. She’d heard enough of the stories that ran like wildfire in places like the Grill to know that just about anything was grist for Mystic Falls’ oversized rumour mill. She got out of her car at the curb in front of the house, glancing up and down the sidewalk as though checking for witnesses. Honestly, a small, quick thank you was none of their business.
Seeing no noses pressed to the windows of neighbouring houses, or the trouble that she was constantly on the lookout for, Rowan made her way up the path to the house. It looked like a big place for just the doctor, maybe there was family too, kids to steal the cookies, a wife to compliment her husband to. It didn’t matter either way. She tucked her sunglasses into the open collar of her shirt, then rang the doorbell. A polite smile was on her lips when the door started to swing open, but it wasn’t the good doctor standing behind it. The young man looked enough like Julian that he could have been his son, but she knew better than to make assumptions. ”Hi. I’m here to see Julian Leroux. Is he around by any chance?” Figuring suspicions ran high in this town, Rowan tipped the box she carried slightly, so the bakery’s logo on top of it could be seen. ”I just wanted to drop off a little something.” Maybe the hospital would’ve been the better choice after all.

It was scary to think that soon enough graduation would be upon them and when that happened then Dec would officially be done with school. It had been such a big part of his life up until now that he wasn’t too sure what it would be like when it was all over but if he was honest he was looking forward to starting the next chapter of his life. He knew that no matter what happened he would have his friends and family by his side and soon enough they would be able to start enjoying everything that they had worked so hard for. Dec knew that chances were he might end up repeating school in the future in order to start out younger in a new place when he had to move around but this was his first time going through it and that made it special as far as he was concerned. Having Caroline there by his side had helped a lot, she had been there for him ever since they were kids and their relationship had grown stronger ever since they got together. Now there was a bond between them that couldn’t be undone, after all it was Caroline’s blood that had been used to turn him into a vampire and his DNA had been used to turn her into a werecreature, He wasn’t sure what the future was going to hold for the two of them but the truth was that he was looking forward to finding out. That time wasn’t upon them just yet though and Dec knew that they all still had some work to put in before that could happen. As it was he was at home studying and he had been busy with that for most of the day. There were times when he could count on Amy or Julian for company but Amy was out with Jesse and Julian was catching up with Brady since they both had the day off. Dec had thought about seeing whether Caroline or one of his friends was free to study with so he wouldn’t have to deal with the neverending silence alone but he knew that they probably had other things going on at the moment so instead he had decided to tough it out. Needless to say he was incredibly bored by the time the doorbell rang and he was in desperate need or a distraction so he didn’t hesitate in setting his books aside and making his way to the front of the house so he could open the door. The woman before him wasn’t one he recognised but he found himself smiling at her nonetheless. “Hi. He’s off today so he’s out catching up with a friend. I’m his brother Declan, is there anything I can help with?” he asked before his gaze fell to the box she was holding. “I can guarantee you’ll be his favourite person with those. I promise not to eat them all before he gets home,” he added with a grin. “Is there a special occasion?” Julian hadn’t mentioned that anyone would be stopping by and Dec didn’t recognise the woman so he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t a little wary but he was doing his best not to show it. The house was in the name of his parents which meant that no vampires could enter without being invited but there were plenty of threats out there that weren’t and the hitlist and Dread Doctors had definitely proved that to him. What had started out as a small gesture of gratitude felt huge the moment the door had opened and it was someone other than Julian standing there. Wisdom would’ve said that going straight to the hospital to do this was the best way to go about things, but for once she hadn’t listened to common sense. That was going to come back and bite her on the butt one way or another. She’d aimed for privacy, for not embarrassing herself or Doctor Leroux in front of his entire department, but instead it was now his family she was in boggy water with. Would this guy go telling Julian that some strange woman had turned up on the doorstep like some sort of creepy stalker? Hopefully not. Rowan supposed she could’ve pulled her ID as some sort of proof that she hadn’t gone following Julian back here, that risked a call back to the office though and blowing the top off of her legendarily professional attitude. She clamped her teeth down on her tongue, trying to stop herself from plunging into fresh trouble. Being rash was what had gotten her here this time. Common sense was what was needed.
Rowan’s smile brightened, although there was a trace of apology in it. He wasn’t questioning how she’d found their home at least, just answering her question about whether Julian was home before he glanced down at the box. ”Ah, I probably should’ve called first … or just left this at the hospital.” Not that Julian would’ve been there today. She shouldn’t have hedged all her bets about him being home. ”I’d appreciate that,” Rowan admitted with a chuckle when his little brother – far less awkward than a son, since it didn’t mean a wife was likely to appear from inside the house to question why some woman was at the door asking for her husband. ”There are plenty in there if he wants to share though. I went with chocolate chip and double chocolate cookies. I figured I couldn’t go wrong with those…” Unless Julian wasn’t a chocolate fan and then she was doubly screwed. Maybe she should’ve added a few oatmeal raisin too, just to cover all of her bases.
Tapping her fingers against the box, Rowan blushed faintly. Cookies weren’t too grand a gesture at least. They said ‘thank you for doing me a solid’, not I now owe you a kidney for saving my life. It was apparently still special enough that Declan was asking what had inspired the move. ”Your brother did me a favour at the hospital a few days ago,” she started. Rowan gestured with the box back in the direction she’d come. ”A coworker of mine was injured at work, and I was at the hospital with them. Your brother ended up a knight in shining armour when I couldn’t get the coffee machine to work. Sometimes you get a little desperate, you know?” A huff of laughter rolled out of her. Coffee hadn’t done much to calm her nerves about how Dominguez was doing, but Julian had been reassuring and she’d certainly appreciated that. ”I wanted to say thank you for him keeping me sane while I was there. Fingers crossed he’s a cookie fan, or it’ll be another trip back to the bakery for a thank you.” At least if they weren’t, she could get an idea of what he did like from his brother before she made a second attempt at saying a thank you to him.

Days at home alone were rare, normally Amy, Julian or another of his siblings was around when his parents weren’t but that day Dec had the house to himself and he had decided to take advantage of that by getting some studying done. His finals were coming up and they were a big deal this time because at the end of the school year he would be graduating and if he was honest he wasn’t entirely sure how to feel about that. He was looking forward to being able to start the next chapter of his life but at the same time he had been a student for most of his life and he really wasn’t sure what he would do when that came to an end. Dec had grad school to think about, he wanted to become a social worker so he still had more than he needed to do but he was going to be working alongside it as well so it really was going to be different. One thing was for sure, though, whatever came next he knew that he would face it with Caroline and everyone else that he loved by his side and he really was glad about that. He hadn’t expected someone who show up looking for his brother and Dec knew that he perhaps should have been a little wary about her showing up at their home but then again Dec and his siblings had all been born in Mystic Falls and his family had been living in the town for generations so he knew that it really wasn’t that difficult to find them. They kept what they were a secret from everyone apart from the people they trusted most but ask the right person where they lived and it wouldn’t be difficult to find out so he wasn’t too worried. The hit list threat was over at least so he didn’t have to be on his guard as much as he had been back then after learning that his name was on there. “If you’d left them at the hospital there wouldn’t have been any left for him by the time he got there, trust me,” Dec chuckled. “This is much better.” At least then his brother would be guaranteed to get them. “You really can’t, not in this house. We all have a slight chocolate addiction,” he grinned. It wasn’t every day that someone showed up at the house with a thank you gift for his brother so Dec couldn’t deny that he was curious as to what had brought it on. As she explained what had happened, Dec nodded. “Yeah, I know what you mean,” he chuckled. “Julian has always been good at that so I’m not surprised. He always seems to know how to help.” There was a decent age gap between them but his brother had still always been there for him and always seemed to know the right things to say and do so Dec knew that he was pretty lucky. “He’s a cookie fan, don’t worry. I can call him if you’d like to wait and see him. I’m sure he’d like to thank you in person,” he offered, knowing that Julian wouldn’t be happy with him if he didn’t at least try and make that happen. “Sorry, I didn’t catch your name,” he added. Her parents were all about love and generosity, but the moment they left wherever it was they’d settled for a time, it had always been back to just the three of them. Rowan knew that her grandparents would have preferred it another way, they’d wanted their family around them, as they’d always lived. She could have gone back there after her parents had been killed, but it hadn’t felt right. At the time she hadn’t really believed in ghosts, although it had felt like her parents’ would have been there with her if she’d returned to the place they’d left with their daughter to live the life they’d wanted to. Ingrid and her mercenaries had offered her the ability to fight back against those who had killed her parents, but they’d also seemed to live in a way that was closer to the way her parents’ had. Although they were always paid to go wherever they went, they did move, and it was that constant shift she’d found comfort in afterwards. The other operatives had become like siblings, Ingrid a surrogate mother as well as a friend.
Rowan glanced down at the card box. Little treats like that weren’t exactly common when she was training, or even in the barracks they sometimes slept in when they were at the training facilities, but when on those rare occasions they showed up they were always quick to vanish. ”Not that different to where I work then,” she told him on a chuckle. ”They turn into a cloud of locusts whenever there’s a treat in sight.” And now that’d brought it up, maybe this was the time to treat the office too. She doubted that Luc would be swayed with cookies, but you didn’t keep the whole office happy without a little buttering them up sometimes. One dark brow rose, her chuckle echoing Declan’s. ”Better for you?” she teased lightly. ”I’m glad I picked well then.” She hadn’t thought about allergies and dislikes until after she’d gone on instinct and told the clerk what to add to the box. The thank you would’ve been memorable for the wrong reason if it turned out that Julian was allergic to nuts or eggs, or any of the other things in the cookies.
Plenty of other doctors and nurses had bustled past her that day, but Julian had been the one to go out of his way to reassure her – and save her with the coffee machine. Rowan was sure most people who were like that would say that gratitude wasn’t necessary, she’d wanted to give it anyway, though. ”He definitely seemed to have a natural talent for it.” She guessed that it helped on the job – a cool head under fire, a desire to just jump in and do what was needed. Rowan liked to think that she held the same qualities, although they’d been stretched that day as she’d waited to see if one of the people she was supposed to be leading was going to come through what had happened. ”Don’t bother him if he’s doing something important,” Rowan told him. She didn’t have anything pressing back at the office, thankfully. After a moment, she nodded. ”I’d like that,” she told him. Realising she hadn’t introduced herself, Rowan offered a hand now. ”Rowan. I’m usually not so forgetful when it comes to good manners.” Those had been drummed into her by her parents, sharpened by her years working for Ingrid. In security in you needed to be diplomatic as well as strong and well-trained, especially when your company dealt with some of the biggest names in the country.
