As a parent you kept going, no matter how hard things got. For the sake of your kids you put up with all the pain, all the exhaustion, because they were the only thing that mattered. When he’d lost Allison he’d lost a part of himself. Chris had started to crawl back towards really living before she’d been brought back, but it was only when Allison was here again and that thing inside of her had been exorcised that he’d really recovered. Hearing the same weariness in Kiba’s voice, Chris raised his hands, warding off any more talk. He was free to raise his kids as he wished. ”I won’t mention it again,” he promised, his face settling back into its grim lines. ”If you can’t do it, then you don’t have many other options. Remember that.” It wasn’t down to hunters to teach those in the supernatural world how to cope, it was a line most wouldn’t even consider, let alone draw. They were the ones to police the world, not its teachers.
As Kiba sank back down, Chris remained standing. He could see the anxiety threading through Kiba and knew that he couldn’t be the one to solve it all for him. The one who might have been able to do so had vanished, only adding to the wolf’s stress. Somehow they’d ended up back on the subject, despite his attempts at steering it away, at steering Kiba in the right direction. ”In our world, what we deserve doesn’t often come into it,” he said honestly. Had his daughter deserved to die as she had? No. All you could do was pick yourself back up and try to move on. Those that couldn’t perished, the same way some of his ancestors had. ”I can’t tell you what happened then. I can’t promise that another pack would work out either, but I have faith in the ones in this town.” One in particular, at least. Scott had overcome any doubts he’d had and it was no wonder that out of all of them he’d ended up a true Alpha.
He hadn’t exactly been offering to lock Kiba up on the full moon, but if he could find a place for the wolf to do that, maybe that would assure him enough that he started to trust himself again. At some point Kiba was going to have to do that for the sake of his kids. ”I’ve told you who I trust to do it,” Chris muttered, trying to keep the frustration from his voice. ”I’ll reach out to them, but it’s only going to work if you learn to trust them too.” Maybe it would take time, but hopefully it would work. Talking to them was going to take time. Chris frowned, glancing away and then back. ”I’ll be in contact when I’ve worked something out,” he told him. Shaking his head, Chris tried to let the frown bleed away. ”You’re not a danger to anybody right now, I’d have no reason to keep you secured like I did then. Make sure you take my call when it comes, Officer Mason.” Chris moved back, lifting a hand in farewell to the man before he started back down the trail. Maybe all of this would work out in the end, but how it was going to play out all rested on Kiba. He was the one who had to learn how to trust again.
