”It’s rather kitsch, don’t you think? The kitchen and bathroom are both original to the apartment.”And should have had a sledgehammer taken to them decades ago. Maybe she could have tolerated the kitchen, especially since the only thing going in the pumpkin coloured fridge (perfectly matched to the units and the stove – and the walls!) would be blood bags and vodka. One look at the avocado bath suite (without the saving grace of a shower) had Phoebe marching for the door. ”Next!”* * * * * * * * * * ”It’s a bit of a fixer-upper. The last tenants only left a week ago…”Surely it couldn’t have been as bad as the 70s from that morning. Phoebe slid around the edge of the door, behind the realtor, her brow already furrowing. The furniture that remained was outdated, dotted with the ivory islands of frilly, crocheted doilies. Tolerable, since anything that wasn’t stripped out would be carried out by Lawrence. Cardboard boxes littered the apartment, some already taped up. None of it did a thing to absorb the heavy scent of perfume and old people in the air. Phoebe’s nose wrinkled, but she followed the realtor across the room. Air the place out, it’d be fine. ”This is the bedroom, once the furniture’s out it’ll be …””No!” The woman turned towards her, overplucked brows crumpling into one perplexed line. ”It’s bigger than the bedroom in the last apartment, you could get a king sized bed in here…”A king size bed and a dozen of the creepiest dolls she’d ever seen. They were propped in a line against the pillows, flat, creepy eyes staring straight at her. ”Who lives here?! Dahmer’s grandmother?””Lived here,” the realtor hissed, like she didn’t want the dolls to hear. ”Mr and Mrs McNeill both passed last week.””In the apartment?” She wasn’t unfamiliar with death, hadn’t been since she’d gone to her first funeral aged seven – the entire family was expected to pay their respects – but this was horror movie worthy. It wouldn’t matter if the dollars were hauled out, or tossed on a fire, Phoebe was sure that they’d all end up right back here, coming to life in the middle of the night. As the realtor began to babble in that hushed tone again, Phoebe shuddered and walked out of the apartment. The coven – obviously – hadn’t gone in for all that religion stuff, but she didn’t have to be Krista to start grabbing up holy water and a bible to exorcise those things. A moment later the woman was back out, all apologetic smiles. ”I’m sorry, I should have made it clear first.” The spindly brow line accordioned further. ”I’m not sure how many more properties we have to show you. It’s a tough market.”Looking away before the woman’s brows started spelling out messages from beyond the grave, Phoebe smiled sharply. ”How about there?” she crooned, point a finger at the hallway window, and the tiny sliver of Teddy and Lawrences apartment she could see in the building beyond. * * * * * * * * * * Pushing the button for the elevator, Phoebe smiled sharply. The realtor had ummed and aahed for fifteen minutes – apparently the landlord for Teddy’s apartment building had a thing about renting to families as much as possible. Pft. It wasn’t as though she’d be blasting music at 3am. If she wanted to party, that’s what the club was for, and it came with the benefit of free liquor. Moving was necessary. With graduation right around the corner, the practically free dorm room on campus would be gone in weeks and at least here she could be close to Lawrence, and probably at a reasonable distance from Teddy. Even with their new understanding of one another, her living om the moon probably would’ve been too close for Teddy’s liking. He was just going to have to learn how to deal with it. She swept in as the doors pinged open, pushing the button for the sixth floor. If this place was also a dump maybe shed just play on Teddy’s sympathies and plead homelessness so he’d let her stay. Lawrence could sleep on the couch for a few months, until something turned up. The elevator hummed to life, gliding up through the building. This early in the afternoon most people were at work, and she was skipping class, all for the sake of the apartment. If this was an instant yes, maybe it would only be for half a class. Oh for God’s sake. The elevator pinged to a stop, not at six, and the doors glided back. Too bad for them she was … ”Teddy,” Phoebe crooned. Her smile grew, although it was too sharp to be strictly friendly. The last time she’d seen him she’d cried on his shoulder, that meant slamming the mask back on now, even if Teddy’s advice had stuck with her after her door had closed. She held her hand over the buttons at the top of the panel, where the one for six was already glowing brightly. ”Going up?” Oh, she could flutter her lashes with the best of them – and feel a little guilty over her bitchiness later – but Teddy was never going to believe she was ever truly guileless.

━ i started to dream again ━ TEDDY HAD SCRUBBED HIS HANDS A FEW TIMES BEFORE he left work, but nothing would feel as good as a shower. He changed out of his uniform, as well, so there was no dirt on his clothes, but he still felt… unclean. Which was surprising coming from someone who used to take weekly river baths. He’d learned, however, that (the important) people in North America valued cleanliness, and it would make people think badly of you if you were visibly dirty and/or smelly. He’d swiped deodorant on himself after his shift, but figured it was better to bathe sooner rather than later.
Julian was at school, anyway, so he would have time afterwards to relax… by cleaning the apartment. And prepping for dinner.
He padded into the apartment building and found it quiet save for the cleaner, whom he waved at and smiled. The old woman gave him a curt nod from where she was vacuuming the lobby’s carpet, and he punched the “up” arrow for the elevator and waited. It was only a few seconds as the old thing brought itself up from the basement and opened for him, and Teddy pasted on an automatic, polite smile for the woman inside, though it died when he registered her face.
“Hi.” He said quickly, like a terrified rabbit, and then finally smiled, though it had a warmer edge to it than his strictly-polite one. Teddy stepped in, nodding awkwardly at her, and stared up at the digital numbers for something to do. “Here to visit Lawrence?” He asked lightly, trying to fill the empty silence with something. Teddy glanced at Phoebe, but, by the time he looked at the numbers again, they were already at four and still going. “What━” His dark eyes skittered to the number plates, and saw that six was lit up.
“Where are you━” Teddy stopped when he realized it was rude to ask. He’d take this ride and then go back down to his own floor, three floors below, and put this behind him. “Oh, uh, sorry━do you have a friend in the building?” He asked, surprised by the idea that Phoebe had friends. Perhaps she was nicer to other people than she was to him.

Well, it had to happen eventually, didn’t it? Even if she didn’t knock on the door to introduce herself to her new neighbours, they would’ve passed each other on the stairs or ended up looking at one another from opposite sides of the elevator doors in the end. Teddy would scowl at her, trying to bite his tongue for Lawrence’s sake – oh, how had Lawrence ended up trapped between them – but he’d fail to keep it entirely out of eyes that seemed to give him away every time. Those dark irises reflecting back all that she went out of her way to avoid feeling.
Phoebe stared into them now, noticing the way his expression changed the moment the doors slid aside and Teddy realised it wasn’t some random woman in the elevator – or maybe a specific woman from the building that he didn’t hate the way he did her. Could either of them honestly blame her for wanting to be closer to the one part of her family she had left after she was kicked out of the only home she’d had here in Mystic Falls? It wasn’t as though she could’ve moved in with them – although there was a momentary appeal in seeing Teddy swallow he tongue as he woke one morning to find her installed on the couch (or, worse, on the floor in Lawrence’s room). That sort of surprise might just blow up in her face like a grenade though.
No, it was better like this. Rip the band off, let Teddy get used to the idea of her being within a long arm’s reach (or a shriek’s reach if she really needed either – oh, who was she kidding, neither was a big, strong man). It was a baby step anyway. Tip-toeing closer to the time where they could tolerate one another and Lawrence wouldn’t have to pick and choose between which of them to spend time with. The image of the two of them as divorced parents left her squashing down a chuckle in her throat.
Oh, there it was, a proper smile that had probably taken some effort to work out of wherever it wanted to hide when she was in sight. Phoebe leaned back against the wall, her lips fixed in that smile, her gaze tracking Teddy as he crept in to the elevator and tried to make small talk. ”Not today,” she said simply as he caught sight of the lit number on the panel. Not his floor- not like he’d expected to be. The amusement threatened to spill out in a way that would undermine any progress in these diplomatic relations with Teddy. Phoebe pasted on an innocent look as she shook her head at him. ”I can count the number of people I know in the building on one hand,” she admitted, holding up one hand, four fingers raised. Lawrence, Teddy, Julian and the realtor. The rest of her neighbours she’d get to know in time, wrapping them around her little finger like she did almost everybody else. A lawyer in the building? So helpful. She’d intended to compel the woman into fudging the application, listing a non -existent husband on the paperwork, dropping hints about a pregnancy that was absolutely impossible these days. As long as the rubber stamp ended up on the paperwork, the twinges that came with the thought of what might have been would be worth it.
Phoebe raised her hand, drumming her fingers against her chest as thought it would drive those faint feelings away. Her brows rose, her eyes roving over Teddy. ”Are you on your way home from work?” she asked. ”I guess 9-5 doesn’t work when you’ve got childcare duties.” And Lawrence probably wasn’t conscious to handle those – not that he’d be able to step foot outside the apartment.
Not paying attention to the elevator’s progress, Phoebe didn’t notice the 6th floor approaching. ”Good afternoon.” The realtor’s voice cut through the bump of the elevator stopping and the doors sliding open. ”Oh … this must be Mr. Murphy, I had wondered when I would be seeing you.” She’d give her points, the woman managed to swallow her surprise.
Spotting an opportunity, Phoebe slid her arm around Teddy’s, drawing him close as she towed him out of the elevator. She beamed a smile up at him. ”Hi. Say hello to Mrs. Connelly sweetheart.” Like Teddy was a shy child and not a grown man who’d probably tear himself away from her as though she’d suddenly turned red hot. Phoebe squeezed his arm, tiptoeing to get closer to his ear. ”Just play along, please?” Look at her breaking out her manners – that was personal growth, wasn’t it? Either that or the desperation not to end up living with a dozen Chucky dolls.

━ i started to dream again ━ FIVE PEOPLE. DID SHE COUNT JULIAN? HE WASN’T sure that Phoebe saw his six-year-old as a person, but, either way, that meant she did know other people who lived in the building. “Oh.” Was all he said, realizing that Phoebe likely didn’t want to talk about it if she didn’t elaborate.
He should’ve known she’d want to talk about him instead. Was it for an alternate purpose? Maybe. He wasn’t sure what yet, but if anybody could tease him about something mundane, it was Phoebe. “Yes.” He nodded, then turned it into a shake, “No.” And Teddy paused before continuing━because it was confusing and he was not allergic to conversation. “Julian is still in school, but they were able to change the hours of my shifts so I can take him in the morning and be home to pick him up.” He supposed not a lot of people were jumping at the role of groundskeeper for the cemetery, especially at night. They usually took care of Teddy because he was the only one who agreed to those shifts; it was a win-win scenario (he’d learned this term recently).
Teddy leaned over to press the button for the third floor, already dealing with the fact that he’d have to wait for her to depart (and perhaps pick up someone else) before he went back down. That was alright. It would be five minutes at most, and…
Mr. Murphy?
His dark eyes flicked from the stranger to Phoebe and widened slightly. Before he could think of how to politetly correct her, Phoebe was sliding in, hooking onto him like a snake━just as quick as one, too. His mind didn’t work as fast as hers, especially not when it came to deception. He came alive again (partly) when she squeezed his arm. Only enough to speak dumbly, “Hello, Mrs. Connelly.” As if he didn’t have a mind of his own, wearing an innocent expression that he flashed the woman.
At Phoebe’s whisper, Teddy looked down at her and raised his brows. Well, it seemed he was playing along whether he liked it or not. He just didn’t know what he was playing along for, and that bothered him.
He cleared his throat and smiled at Mrs. Connelly, though he was sure she was seeing right through him. He felt like he was sweating profusely. “Sorry, hi. How are you? It’s good to finally meet you, too.” Teddy reached out to shake her hand, seeing the woman hum and look him over. She exchanged her own pleasantries, then said something like,
“Well, let’s take a look at the place then, shall we?” And led them down the hall.
Phoebe was trying to move into his building? Sure, school might’ve been close to ending (did it ever end when you were immortal?), and perhaps she wanted to be closer to her brother, but did she have to be in the building?
And did Teddy have to pretend to have a wife? Did this not make her uncomfortable, too, considering their last conversation? They weren’t really married, but Teddy certainly found himself pausing over Mr. and Mrs. Murphy.
As they entered the apartment━which looked almost identical to his own━Teddy’s eyes skittered over the place, then to the realtor, who was asking them about children. The thought of Phoebe with children made him scoff quietly, but Teddy tried to awkwardly cover it up with a cough, and lifted the hand (not latched onto Phoebe) to his mouth. Again, he thought of Octavia, but when he looked down at Phoebe and saw all her differences━lighter hair, rounder eyes and face━he settled again. Somewhat.

Their father had never been in the running for any sort of ‘dad of the year’ trophies, which probably made her a poor judge of what a good one was like. Phoebe was willing to lay money on Julian getting his dad one at some point though. Unlike the way it usually pruned around her, Teddy’s face would light up then. He was the sort of dad who cared. Waiting at the school gates for the little pack of hellions to come racing up to the knot of parents. Knowing Teddy he’d be completely unaware of the way the mothers looked at him. A single father, doing such a great job of raising his son. It was pure catnip, but Teddy would likely have just smiled at them, his blindfold squarely in place. No matter what had happened to his wife – at his hands – Teddy had remained stunningly naïve.
Naïve enough not to see through her smoke screen that first night. It was almost enough to have a pang shooting through her chest – her conscience might’ve atrophied over the decades, but every now and then it burst back into life like a star going super nova in her chest. The last time it had, she’d cried on his shoulder – an experience she wasn’t about to repeat. The corners of her mouth twitched higher, just a hint of sharpness to her smile (necessary if she wanted to stop her brain venturing onto that soft ground). ”Just a pit stop then? Cleaning up? Picking up his after school snack?” Doing all the sorts of things that parents were supposed to – not setting out the grimoires or turning homework into another lecture of how things would be when Lawrence became coven leader. Perhaps even uncle Lawrence would be there when they got home. The three of them sitting down together for dinner – the same way Lawrence might have with her family if their parents had gotten their way. A table filled with screaming kids that she’d been expected to produce. The mental image was enough to have a shudder running down her spine. It had always been her personal nightmare, each sticky set of fingers that pulled at her skirt another shackle to the valley, to the coven. She swallowed hard, pushing the thought back down inside. Perhaps if she’d known Joshua before. That was a night she wouldn’t tie herself in though. Especially not now.
The smile was instant and glowing. Phoebe glanced at Teddy, caught his dark eyes going wide at the realtor’s slip. Oh no he didn’t. This was better than having to compel the woman into playing ball. Her lips pursed faintly before she pressed them to Teddy’s temple to seal the plea right there. ”Good boy,” Phoebe said brightly. She’d pay for this later, but by then the contract would be signed and there would be no getting her out of there. Phoebe’s hand tightened on Teddy’s arm as she sank back down, fingers clutching tight as she dipped her head in a slight nod of approval. He hadn’t pushed her away and screamed ’I have no idea who this woman is’ at least. Oh! Her eyes widened as Teddy steeled himself and greeted Mrs. Connelly as though he had a clue what was actually going on. Who was this half decent actor and what had he done with Teddy?
Mrs. Connelly almost seemed to preen, taking Teddy’s hand in both of her own. Phoebe’s brows rose, she certainly hadn’t had the red carpet rolled out for her. She patted Teddy’s arm, like she was reclaiming the territory that would likely be fighting her off as soon as Mrs. Connelly was out of ear shot. ”Let’s,” she crooned. ”I’m sure this is gonna be the one.” If Teddy didn’t complain to building management to get her kicked out first. ”Oooh,”[/n] she squealed as she stepped inside the thankfully normal appearing apartment. ”No dolls, that’s a start. You would’ve run screaming from the last place. A total nightmare.” Shuddering – only half faking it – Phoebe pressed closer to her husband’s side. She paused there as Mrs. Connelly continued babbling at the two of them, dropping the one word she’d hoped wouldn’t come up.
If her heart was capable of beating faster it would’ve done, rising up into her throat on that sick feeling. Alright, maybe she’d never have been parent material, but being turned had meant it never had a chance of happening. Her hand tightened around Teddy’s arm again, something burning at the back of her eyes. Phoebe swallowed hard, trying to shake away the mood as she pressed her other hand flat against her stomach. ”Soon, hopefully,” she crooned. Whiskey eyes glinted with a promising warmth as she looked up at Teddy and purred lightly. ”We’ve certainly been trying. The second bedroom would be perfect for our first. Is it through here?” She gave a small, happy squeak, tugging Teddy through the apartment to see it. ”It’s perfect, don’t you think, baby?” Perfect for Kitty at least. Bigger than their dorm rooms had been at least. Two beds would fit if Krista wanted to make it all three of them. The master was hers, of course, a break – finally – from the chaos of the dorms, close enough to her brother that she could practically knock on his door from here.

━ i started to dream again ━ GOOD BOY? HE COULDN’T BELIEVE THIS. NOT only was he lying for Phoebe, but now she was teasing him about it? He huffed and offered Mrs. Connelly a half-amused, half-embarrassed “I can’t take her anywhere” look, and then let Phoebe drag him into the apartment once the realtor was done beaming at him. He almost wanted to say, She’s the one with the money, lady━butter her up! but he left it alone.
She was sure, huh? That was because this apartment was the place she could remain in close proximity to torture him… or to see her brother. Either way, Teddy wasn’t particularly pleased.
“Dolls?” He raised his brows, then furrowed them as he looked down at Phoebe. He didn’t understand what was so scary about dolls. They were children’s toys━he remembered playing with his sisters and their tremendous amount of dolls when they were kids. What was so wrong about that?
In any case, he didn’t think he’d have the chance to ask. Clearly, Teddy was only an accessory in this situation, and so he presumed he wouldn’t be allowed time for questions.
As soon as Mrs. Connolley brought up children, Teddy scoffed and fake-coughed, but he sensed the air changing, and how Phoebe stilled beside him. He frowned suddenly as he looked down at her, realizing that perhaps he’d been too quick to make a joke about it. He got to have this. He could imagine the spare bedroom as Julian’s, and then return to it in a few minutes, whereas Phoebe could imagine all she wanted and never have the real thing. Sure, there was that program where they gave other people’s children away, but… well, he wasn’t sure she was interested in that.
For a moment, he couldn’t continue acting, not even as she pulled him to the bedroom and lied about their “impending baby” with a chipper attitude. Teddy pressed a tender kiss to her temple as if it could whisk away all the disappointing thoughts she was likely already trying to forget about.
Finally, Teddy’s eyes flicked to Phoebe’s, and then the bedroom, where he eventually felt himself reenter the situation. It’d all gone quiet for a moment while he worried about her, and he wasn’t totally sure what she’d said, but he’d caught the gist. “Yes,” He cleared his throat and nodded curtly, “Yes, definitely.” Teddy repeated with a little more surety, still letting Phoebe take up residence on one of his arms. He was going to suggest where to put the crib, but that felt like rubbing salt in a wound, so he stayed quiet.
“Well, if you’re sure, I can get the paperwork drawn up!” Mrs. Connelly said chipperly, and Teddy stepped back to face her, pulling Phoebe with him. His eyes dropped to hers, then to the realtor, who was obviously looking for him to make the decision. “Phoebe gets the final say.” He nodded towards her, grinning, and then added, “But I think it’s great.” And, really, what else was he going to say? The realtor was already nudging them towards the door, and he couldn’t exactly throw his arms up and say he hated it. Phoebe would just find another way to weasel into his space. At least she had somewhat of her own if she was on a different floor. He didn’t have to see her all of the time. And, obviously, she wasn’t going anywhere, so he had to learn to live with her. Hopefully she’d be nicer to him after this, though.

Phoebe peeled her hand off of Teddy’s arm long enough to wave off his question about the dolls, her lips pinching shut around the sick feeling rolling up from her stomach. ”You don’t want to know,” she assured him. And honestly she doubted Teddy did. He’d probably have paid for a priest to perform an exorcism in the place (just burning the dolls definitely wasn’t going to deal with the problem) and the first year’s rent just to make sure that she was anywhere but here. Perhaps if she let those cracks around her emotions open up again and let him see a hint of the fear in her eyes then he’d cave at least enough to consider letting her live within a thousand feet of her brother. Teddy had already seen too much of that side of her though.
Oh, he thought he knew her. One glimpse of the other Phoebe – the one who’d been stuffed away in a corner of her mind like she’d jammed the dolls her parents had tried to interest her in as a child into the bottom of her toy chest – and Teddy was an expert. No kids (not even the fake idea of them), because she was about as maternal as a cuckoo. Children weren’t to be seen, let alone heard or touched. It took her a moment to look up at him, schooling her expression as she’d done before. Phoebe forced the warmth into her eyes, her lips pursing enough to create a passable smile. ”Don’t look so horrified at the thought,” she cooed at Teddy, laughing as she glanced at the realtor and shook her head. ”It’s the thought of all those sleepless nights and endless dirty diapers.” Teddy had probably taken care of all of that without a word of complaint for his son, each task done for his wife with a beaming smile.
Was it desperation to tug at Teddy’s arm and drag him away from the realtor? Perhaps a little. She wasn’t going back to any of the places she’d checked so far and she’d rather choke than have to beg to stay on Teddy’s couch or sleep on the floor of Kitty’s dorm room. Pleasepleaseplease. The words were stoppered up in Phoebe’s throat, but they were so close to spilling out by the time Teddy pressed a kiss to her temple. Then she was just close to those tears breaching the surface again.
Her lips pinched tight again – holding back the tears rather than the nausea this time. Phoebe squeezed Teddy’s arm in gratitude, knowing that she was going to have to thank him after this. Whatever had him hesitating before seemed to have given way in that instant, the agreement she hadn’t expected from him spilling out as they looked around the bedroom. ”It’ll need painting, but I’m sure we can manage that.” We being the operative word – if she couldn’t convince Lawrence to help with that, then she’d compel somebody else into it. That was just a minor change though, the rest of the apartment was everything she could’ve asked for and hadn’t found in any of the cess pits single-Phoebe had been shown.
Practically spinning on her toes, Phoebe turned a beatific smile in Mrs. Connelly’s direction. This was it, the moment the realtor either called bullshit on her whole ruse. She looked expectantly up at Teddy, waiting for him to blow it. When he didn’t, Phoebe practically bounced. ”It’s better than great, it’s amazing – just what we were looking for. Yes! We’re sure. Thank you!” The enthusiasm was perhaps a bit much, all of those verbal exclamation marks threatened to have her eyes rolling. ”I can stop by and sign them tomorrow. The sooner we can move in the better. Right, sweetie?”
Out in the hallway, with Mrs Connelly locking up behind them, Phoebe turned towards Teddy. Her hand slid down her arm, squeezing his fingers – in equal parts gratitude and warning. She rose on her toes again, pressing close to loop her other arm around his neck. It was probably too close to how they’d been that first night – wanted then, but probably bordering on repulsive in Teddy’s mind now – but Phoebe settled her cheek against his. Lips that would leave traces of gloss on his skin pressed to his ear. ”I knew you’d come through for me,” she crooned, low enough that Mrs Connelly wouldn’t hear. ”I’m sure Lawrence will love having his sister so close. Promise I won’t drop by while you’re in the shower again.” Although she was close enough now that with enough concentration she’d probably be able to hear a pin drop in their apartment. Teddy would probably have them moving out in a heartbeat if he realised that, desperately tearing himself away from her again.
