Looking back at the way his life used to be, Raf could hardly recognise the person that he had been back then. Before he triggered his curse he had been living with Hector, Maria and Landon and he had been taking the brunt of his foster father’s abuse so that Landon wouldn’t have to. He hadn’t told Landon about what Hector was doing to him, instead he’d gone out of his way to hide the bruises but now there weren’t any secrets between them any longer – except perhaps this one. Landon had been there for him through everything and he had refused to walk away even after learning about the supernatural world. Raf hadn’t forgotten what the unconditional love of family was like but Landon truly was his brother even though the two of them weren’t related by blood. They had both grown up in the foster system and they had both experienced the worst that the system had to offer but they had survived and in the end they had been fostered by the same couple and had become each other’s family. Raf knew that perhaps without the belief that Landon had in him he wouldn’t have accepted the place at the Salvatore School and he knew that he definitely wouldn’t have decided to stay if they hadn’t offered his brother a place as well but they had both found a place that they could call home and Raf was so glad about that. Now he had friends around him who knew who and what he was and accepted him for it. His friends had stood by him after he had killed Landon and again through his lunar psychosis and they had never judged him for the fact that he had killed Cassie and that was what had triggered his curse in the first place. They were true friends to him and he knew that he wouldn’t want to be without them now. There was one person who was more than that to him, though, and that was Hope. Raf had liked her ever since he first arrived at the Salvatore School but he had never for a minute thought that she would ever like someone like him. She was so far out of his league that she should have never looked at him twice in that respect. They were good friends and she was his Alpha but he had finally worked up the courage to ask her out and, incredibly, she had said yes. At first Raf had felt sure that he had to be dreaming but she had assured him that she meant it and ever since then he had been working on something special. He didn’t have a lot of money so he couldn’t afford to take her out for a proper meal like he would like to but he’d planned something a little different and he hoped that she was going to like it. That was the one secret that he was keeping from Landon and everyone else right now, he hadn’t told anyone that he had asked Hope out because he hadn’t wanted the added pressure for their first date. He wanted them to have the chance to see how things were going to go without their friends and loved ones weighing in and he had a feeling that the others would all understand in time. For now his sole focus was on Hope and he felt a smile touch his lips as he saw her approach. He had been sitting on the wall at the front of the school waiting for her and the moment she emerged he instantly felt the butterflies he had been feeling all day start to settle a little. “Hey,” he said, his hand finding her waist as he kissed her cheek gently. “Are you still up for this?” he asked, knowing that he had to make sure that she hadn’t changed her mind first. ━ your sweetness is more cruel than your hurt ━
Hope had done a remarkable job at boarding up her heart that when someone finally penetrated her defenses, she was completely caught off-guard by it. Her feelings for Rafael developed slowly. It began when Rafael and her started spending more and more time together after she turned him into a hybrid. First, it was a friendship then slowly, it began to develop into something more and as much as she wanted to control her feelings and stop them from developing any further, she couldn't. There was something about Rafael that made it near impossible for her to intervene and stop herself from catching feelings. Hope was ready to let those feelings remain hidden but then Rafael took the first step and actually asked her out and when she agreed, she almost felt bad for Rafael's reaction because she could tell that he didn't think she'd say yes to him, so with quick reassurance from her side, she made it clear that she meant it and wasn't just saying yes to save him from the embarrassment of a rejection.
Hope couldn't help but feel a little nervous as she looked at her own reflection, combing her fingers through her hair before she finally decided to just go for it, especially since she knew that she shouldn't keep Rafael waiting for long. So, with a final nod at her reflection, Hope stepped back and finally made her way out of the school where Rafael was waiting for her. She approached him with a shy smile resting on her lips. "Hey." She greeted back and when he pressed a kiss on her cheek, she couldn't deny the fact that it made her heartbeat stutter. "Why wouldn't I be?" Hope asked with a slight tilt of her head before she seemed to realize that Rafael was asking to be sure she hadn't changed her mind. "If I wasn't, I wouldn't wait 'til our date day to change my mind, Raf. I'm sure." Hope assured him with a small smile resting on her lips. "So, um, what are we doing?" Hope asked not long after, unable to deny the fact that she was curious about how their date night was going to go.

Letting people in wasn’t something that Raf was very good at. He knew that it came from growing up in the foster care system, his foster parents had gone from bad to worse with each new home he went to and Hector and Maria had without been the worst. The only saving grace he’d found had been gaining a brother in Landon. That was something that he hadn’t expected when Hector and Maria had become his newest foster parents but it had definitely made living there that much more bearable. Raf knew that he wouldn’t have been able to get through the last few years without Landon by his side but there was someone else who had been there for him through it all as well – Hope. They had become friends when he started at the Salvatore School but after he became a hybrid those feelings had gradually turned into something more. That had terrified Raf because Hope was one of the few good things he had going in his life but in the end it had gotten to the point where he just couldn’t keep it to himself any longer. He had asked Hope out on a date and she had completely shocked him when she had agreed. He had honestly thought that she would turn him down because he hadn’t thought that she would ever be interested in someone like him but she had said yes and it was clear that she wasn’t just saying that to be nice so he had quickly realised that he had some planning to do. Raf didn’t have much money so it meant that he was on a very small budget but fortunately he had come up with something that they could do and he hoped that Hope would like it. With everything sorted for their date, Raf made sure to leave himself plenty of time to get ready and he knew that he must have changed his shirt at least five times before finding one that felt right and then he was on his way to meet Hope. It didn’t take her long to arrive and Raf felt a smile touch his lips as she approached. “I know you wouldn’t, I just needed to make sure,” he said gently. As she asked what they were going to be doing, his smile widened. “I hope you don’t find it cheesy but I thought we could start with a picnic down by the lake and then we can go for a walk or catch a movie. What do you think?” he asked, hoping that she would like it. HOPE MIKAELSON
