Mason drew back from the hug, shooting Maya a grin as she backed up through the tangle of tables. ”I’ll see you in the morning. Bright and early.” He shot her a salute as she disappeared out the door of the Grill, one hand raising in a wave. Crack of dawn these days wasn’t whenever the surf started running well. It came with alarms and the torture of 6am starts, work piled on to the rookie (the title had stuck despite the handful of years he’d put in at the station now) the minute he poked his head around the door. She’d have sworn it kept him out of trouble – something that had always been her job – but there was plenty out there that could still find him if he wasn’t careful.
Green eyes swept over the restaurant as he abandoned the table where they’d been sitting for dinner and headed to the bar. The hybrid problem hadn’t vanished just because he’d tried asking Katherine to intervene on his account. Playing the middle man likely hadn’t sat well with her. Who wanted to owe either side anything when you could stay in that no man’s land between? By now she’d probably whispered to one of the Mikaelsons that he was sniffing around. He’d avoided the target that Katherine had tried to paint on his back once, she likely wouldn’t let him get away with it again. Know your role.
His should’ve been defined by what he was trying to do to rewrite his family’s position in this town now, but folks in Mystic Falls had long memories and little desire to change their small minds. Richard was still the good son, the one who’d taken up his rightful spot as mayor, losing his life trying to make a difference in the town. Mason … well, wasn’t there a wave somewhere calling his name? One day. Smudged with soot, carrying a kitten he’d rescued from a tree, pulling someone out of a car they’d wrapped around a tree out near the Falls. Something he did would end up redeeming him. He just hoped that eventually Tyler would have the same chance.
What Klaus had done had likely changed his nephew forever, but it didn’t meant that he had any intention of giving up on him. Maybe it had fallen on deaf ears when he’d tried to tell Tyler that, he had opened his mouth and said the words though, just like he’d assured Matt he would. Mason settled on an empty stool, catching sight of his nephew’s best friend down at the end of the bar. He’d tried to track Tyler down through him before, but it seemed like he hadn’t been the only one Tyler had been ducking them – for good reason after he’d triggered the curse he’d hoped to hell Mason would never have to suffer through and had been turned by Klaus. He’d torn the truth out of Tyler then, listened to it splutter out on a wave of regret. It hadn’t changed much though, Tyler was still nearly impossible to track down and things were still rocky between them.
Catching Matt’s attention, Mason planted his elbows back on the bar. His lips curled faintly, his chin rising towards the taps lining the mahogany. ”Hey Matt. Can I get a pint of whatever’s on tap? Thanks.” Maybe he ought to have headed home the way Maya had, cutting himself off from the liquor that couldn’t affect him and the possible dozen bad decisions he could end up making. ”Looks like it’s finally slowing down in here…” Twisting on his stool, he glanced around again. A group of college kids were still playing pool, once upon a time Tyler, Matt, Elena and the others probably would’ve been ruling the table, but there’d been a lot of time and water under the bridge since then.

Lately Matt’s life seemed to revolve around school, football and the Grill so he knew that he needed something to help break that up but he had no idea what. Graduation would be upon them before he knew it and Matt had no idea what he wanted to do when that time came, he knew that he didn’t have the brains to do something meaningful like Elena, Bonnie and Caroline were sure to and he didn’t have the money to keep him going so he didn’t have to worry about working like Ty did. Matt’s options were much more limited and he wasn’t sure what would be the best fit for him but he knew that he couldn’t carry on working at the Grill forever. He had already been working there for much longer than most, a lot of the time people worked there to earn some money before they headed off to college or during the holidays but Matt had been a permanent fixture there for the last six or seven years. He liked working there but it really wasn’t what he wanted to be doing with his life, he wanted to do something more and he wanted to help people but he had no idea how. For now all he could do was keep working and do his best to at least make some money that he could put away for a rainy day. Evangeline still tossed as many extra shifts his way as she could and he was grateful to her for that. She knew his position and knew that he was fending for himself so she always tried to help out as much as she could. Matt refused to take charity from anyone but that was the way he had always been so anyone who knew him knew to expect that by now. It had been different when he and Rebekah were together, back then he had still been working but it had been a lot easier having her to share everything with. Now Matt was back to doing everything on his own again and he didn’t particularly like it after getting used to the way things were before but he knew that he simply didn’t have a choice. That day had been a particularly busy one at the Grill but finally things seemed to be starting to slow down a little and that was when Mason caught his eye. Matt didn’t always end up working behind the bar, he had started out as a busboy before moving up to a waiter and now he did whatever was needed of him. That day one of the bartenders had called in sick so Matt had stepped in and he had been rushed off his feet from the moment his shift started until now and the truth was that he was glad it seemed to be slowing down a bit. “Yeah sure. Coming right up,” he said, grabbing one of the glasses before pouring Mason a drink and setting it down in front of him. “Trust me, it needed to. I can’t remember when we were last this busy,” he admitted, relieved that the crowd had thinned out a bit. “How’s everything going?”MASON LOCKWOOD

He’d had a seat – back when he was barely old enough to order liquor in the place – all marked out like he was going to end up one of those doddery old eighty-year olds, propping up the bar at the Grill, boring everyone around him with stories of his glory days. Slipping into it night after night, trailing back to the booths with the kids of some of the other Founding families when one of them would appear, all of them steeping the legacy that was resting heavier and heavier on them in alcohol like maybe it’d drown some of it out. At closing he’d stagger out, heading home to be hit with that wave of disappointment. He’d have said it was funny that it’d become a vicious circle with Tyler taking his place, but it was worse than that these days. His only concern was that Tyler wasn’t any deeper in trouble – Niklaus Mikaelson was bad enough. Mason glanced at that seat as he settled at the bar though, feeling a quick flash of that care free mood in the back of his mind. That certainly wasn’t what he could run back to with so many responsibility riding on his shoulders. A beer or two more and he’d head back to spend half the night waiting to see if Tyler was going to make an appearance before he gave in and headed to bed, just hoping that his nephew was putting his head down in the dorms at Whitmore instead of running round the town after dark, doing God only knew what for his sire. Christ.
The urge to ask Matt if he’d seen him was there on his tongue as soon as he saw him on the other side of the bar. He’d done that before, had been hit with Matt’s sage wisdom on pushing with Tyler, and finding it out for himself. It’d worked in a way, even if he hadn’t heard what he’d wanted to – those truths weren’t being shared in the middle of the Grill, but he did wonder if Tyler had admitted what had happened to his best friend. Mason settled as Matt poured the beer, a single fingertip tapping lightly against the mahogany until Matt set the glass down and then he was reaching for it. ”I guess it’s one of those nights. Everyone brought the kids out for dinner, half the rest of the town decided on a night of playing pool.” And Maya had dragged him out for dinner, a little winding-down after shift.
He lifted the beer, took a long sip. It didn’t hold the same appeal as it had when he was a teenager and the bottom of the bottle was a sign of rebellion, one he’d keep flashing at his parents until something finally gave and they took notice of the kid they actually had rather than the good little robot they’d wanted (and had gotten with Richard). Mason set it down, gesturing towards the door, like Maya was still gonna be hanging around right there. ”It’s … it’s going good. I got dinner with an old friend, although I guess these days she’s just as much a co-worker.” Maya would always be a friend first and foremost though, the one person he knew always had his back, the same way he knew Matt would have Tyler’s. ”How about you? Graduation’s gotta be coming up, right? Bet you can’t wait to get out of school. Ty’s probably already planning how fast he can get out of there.” Like he’d know that. They still weren’t back where they should’ve been, although the supports were going back in to try and rebuild that bridge between the two of them that they’d both had a hand in tearing down in the first place.

Matt enjoyed working at the Grill but he knew that he didn’t want to keep on doing it forever. He was grateful to Evangeline for throwing as many shifts his way as she could since that had given him the chance to pay his rent and bills and still have some money to put away but graduation was coming up and he knew that he needed to figure out what his next move was going to be. It had been great going to college and being able to play football for another four years but now it was time for him to start facing reality and really start thinking about what he wanted his future to look like. Matt knew that he had a long life ahead of him, so many of his friends were immortal and he had decided to stop ageing so he could stay with them and that meant that he would be able to have as many different careers as he wanted but Matt knew that he wanted to find the right one and he was taking his time to figure out what that was. For now work was so busy that he couldn’t think about anything else, though, and he was beyond glad when it started to slow down a bit. “Exactly. A lot have been in from school as well, at one point we had to put people on a waiting list for tables.” Matt was used to the Grill being busy but not that busy. As Mason said he’d grabbed dinner with an old friend, Matt felt a smile form on his face. “Just a friend, huh?” he asked, knowing from what Tyler had told him that there was a time when any woman Mason was seen with would be more than that. Matt knew he couldn’t really judge considering he was single as well but he still couldn’t resist teasing Mason nonetheless. “That does sound good though,” he admitted. Truth be told he couldn’t remember the last time he’d grabbed dinner with a friend and he knew that he was going to have to make sure that he did that soon. Between school, football and work he had been pretty busy lately but his friends meant the world to him and he knew that he needed to make sure he got to spend more time with them. “How did you know?” he chuckled as Mason said that Tyler was probably planning how fast he could get out of school. Studying had never been his strong point, in fact it hadn’t for either of them really, but Matt had wanted to go to college and make something of himself so he was glad he had done it. “It’s not far away now. School and working here has been keeping me pretty busy but I’m trying to figure out what I want to do next,” he admitted. “What made you decide to become a firefighter?”MASON LOCKWOOD

Things never changing had been one of the many reasons he’d been reluctant to come back to Mystic Falls after Richard had run him out of town. No matter how many arguments he’d had with his parents, they’d always stuck to their guns, the way they wanted him to live being the only way. No matter how many times he stood up to Richard, his brother was still going to treat his son exactly how he thought fit. Mason had never expected that there were some immutable things that he’d find comfort in – like the idea that if he walked in here a hundred years from now (not that he planned to) the Grill would still be full of families and high school kids looking for a little more freedom before they went home to parents that would expect them to get on with homework and think about a future that most of them still hadn’t entirely decided on yet.
Even though he was only a couple of years older than the kids that had been playing pool, Matt might’ve been feeling the same. The end of college was rushing up now, instead of high school, and everything would feel like it was gonna change after that. Most of Tyler’s friends seemed to be sticking around town after graduation – at least from what he’d heard from Carol. Whether Tyler would or not was still to be seen. ”I remember how that always went. We’d always end up trying to bargain for just one more game before we had to hand over.” It didn’t matter that he was from a Founding Family, the rules had always been the same here. If Richard had ever stooped low enough to play maybe it would’ve been different.
Being a Lockwood hadn’t stopped the gossip any, if anything it was worse. That hadn’t changed either. Mason grinned and shook his head, aiming a warning finger at Matt. ”Definitely just a friend. We’ve known each other since we were in grade school.” That didn’t mean things couldn’t change, but after everything he and Maya had gone through, Mason wasn’t sure he wanted to screw it up by pushing for things to develop. Out of everybody in Mystic Falls, she was the one person he knew he could always rely on, no matter what. ”It was,” Mason admitted, glancing back towards the door Maya had left through only minutes before. ”She’s one of the reasons I’m glad I came back.”
He looked back at Matt as he chuckled over Tyler’s plans. Mason raked his teeth over his lip. Tyler still wasn’t confiding in him like he’d hoped he would. Every couple of days he tried to push, even if it just resulted in a surly text message in return. Mason smiled wryly, spreading his hands like it was a magic trick. ”Maybe I’m psychic … or maybe I was just like him once.” And that was something Tyler never wanted to consider. His uncle had abandoned him and that meant he wanted to be nothing like him. He settled back with his forearms against the bar, feeling a little older when he considered how long ago that had been. ”At your age it’s still hard to figure out what you wanna spend the rest of your life doing.” Surfing had seemed like it for him, but that had been a teenager’s dream. ”Maya,” Mason said simply. ”I saw what she’d managed to do and she encouraged me. Helping people here makes a difference for me. You think you wanna do something like that?” He imagined Maya would manage to find a spot for Matt if he did.

Even though people tended to come and go from Mystic Falls, the Grill was still a place that most of them ended up at one point or another. Matt enjoyed working there and he knew that he was always going to be grateful to Evangeline for throwing every shift at him that she could, he knew that he didn’t want to end up working there for the rest of his life. His mom had bounced around from place to place getting work wherever she could and bartending had been her go to a lot of the time. It would pay the bills but Matt wanted more out of life than that. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do yet and he knew that he had a long life ahead of him given that he had stopped ageing since so many of his friends were immortal now but he knew that he wanted to find something that would make him happy. Graduation wasn’t too far away but it wasn’t upon them quite yet, though, so Matt knew to make the most of this time before that while it lasted. “That sounds about right, people still try that now,” Matt chuckled. He would be lying if he said that he hadn’t tried it on occasion as well but when he was working and there were people waiting it was more frustrating than anything at times. As Mason insisted that the woman he was meeting was just a friend, Matt found himself studying the guy carefully for a moment. “Uh huh,” he said at last, not sure that he was completely convinced. “That’s not what Tyler used to say about you,” he grinned. Mason had quite a reputation from what he had been able to gather from Tyler but Matt knew that Mason had changed so perhaps he really was telling the truth this time. “It’s good to have someone like that around,” he nodded as Mason said that the woman was one of the reasons he was glad he’d come back. Matt knew that Tyler hadn’t been making it easy for Mason at all but he seemed determined to stick around this time and as far as Matt was concerned that made his friend pretty lucky. “That doesn’t surprise me,” Matt admitted as Mason said that he was just like Tyler once. He knew his friend wouldn’t want to hear that but Matt could definitely see it. “You know Ty, he loves the football and partying side of things but classes not so much,” he shrugged. Matt had tried to keep up with his friend for a while but the truth was that he wasn’t so sure that he wanted to keep up with him these days. Matt had seen what partying too much had done to Vicki and his mom was much the same. Matt always preferred spending time with the people he cared about to going to parties but he wasn’t sure that Tyler would ever see things the same way. “It is,” he agreed as Mason said that it was tough to know at his age what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Matt knew that he had the advantage of having plenty of time which meant that he could try his hand at a lot of different things if he wanted to but there was still a part of him that wanted to get it right the first time if he could. “That must make you feel pretty good,” he nodded as Mason said that helping people made a difference for him. “I’ve thought about it but I don’t know if I see myself running into burning buildings for a living. I’ve thought about maybe trying the police but I’m not sure,” he shrugged. He wasn’t sure whether he would be any good at it but it was the thing that he kept coming back to. MASON LOCKWOOD

As a teenager the grass had definitely seemed greener on the other side. Nobody else seemed to have as much stress in their life as the Lockwoods, not even the other Founding Families. Their parents didn’t push a thousand rules on them about etiquette or the appearances they gave off. They could play pool half the night without worrying about the lectures that might hit when they got home. Coming back now Mason realised it had all just been a matter of perspective, but all he’d wanted then was a different family, a different existence. It hadn’t been perfect, Richard had been worse than their parents in a way. Looking back though, maybe he’d given a whole damn lot to be back there again.
Nostalgia hit hard as Mason laughed low. He tilted his head, looking back at Matt. ”Can’t blame them, ‘specially if you get a streak going.” Being King of the Pool table had felt like a real achievement. He’d had crowing rights for a couple of weeks in high school, but then his parents had cracked down. Home every night after school, putting his head down to study with his SATs coming up. It had been obviously just been another attempt at getting him away from Maya. Just like all the others it had failed. They’d never understood the friendship, only seeing how poor Maya’s family had been instead of who she was.
Apparently Tyler was pretty sure about how things were between them too. Mason’s brows hitched, amusement tugging at his lips until he was smirking. ”What stories has he been telling now?” Maybe he’d been through handfuls of the girls in town when he was younger, but that had been the Mason who’d never intended to stick around for anything serious. ”I didn’t realise that enough then,” Mason admitted, his smile dimming slightly. ”I should’ve done more to stay in touch after I left. She’s forgiven me now though. You have friends that are that close to you, it doesn’t matter how far you end up apart, when you need each other they’ll be there again.” He wished he could’ve said the same about being an uncle. Unfortunately for Tyler he hadn’t been there as much as he should’ve been.
Chagrin filtered through his expression for a moment, but then it was melting away. This wasn’t the first time that he’d tried to prove to Matt that he was trying to be the uncle Tyler needed now. ”It’s hard to want to study when all you heard for years was that you had to,” Mason said with sigh. He’d been proof of that, but at least Tyler had gone to college. It didn’t matter if he didn’t have the greatest grades when he graduated, just that he actually made it across that stage in the end.
Richard might’ve looked down on Matt, on his family. They’d been poor, just the same way Maya’s had been. Matt had been a good influence on Ty though. Hopefully that continued. Mason supposed that in a way that meant he was watching out for Matt too. He bobbed his head slowly as Matt agreed with him about figuring out the rest of his life. His fingers tapped lightly against his forearm, wondering if he’d have ever figured it out if Katherine hadn’t found him. ”Most of the time, yeah,” Mason said, agreeing with Matt’s observation. ”I’m sure Sheriff Forbes would be glad to have someone like you in her department. A steady head, someone who knows this town and the people in it. How long’s the academy training?” The fire academy had been six long, difficult months, even with Maya helping him where she could.

“Happened to you a lot, did it?” Matt chuckled. In a way he used to envy the people who were able to spend their evenings relaxing and playing pool at the Grill while he had to work but he had eventually managed to make peace with that. He hadn’t had the same upbringing that his friends had, not by a long shot, and he’d had to work to support himself but he knew that it was just one of those things. His dad had bailed before he was born and his mom had been so flighty that he and Vicki had been left to fend for themselves most of the time. After Vicki died it had left Matt on his own to keep a roof over his head and food on the table and he knew that he could have dropped out of school to make that work but that was the last thing he’d wanted to do. He really couldn’t blame the others for it and he couldn’t blame Mason when he’d had the chance either. “As far as he was concerned you used to be able to have any girl you wanted,” Matt shrugged, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at Mason. It hadn’t really surprised Matt to hear that from Ty when they were younger, the Lockwood name went a long way in the town as did the names of the other Founding Families. Matt wasn’t from one of those himself so he’d never had that privilege but he knew that there were some who liked to try and use that to their advantage when they could. “Good friends will always be there when you need them,” he agreed. “I know that’s what it’s like for me with Ty and the others. No matter what happens we always rally around each other when someone needs it.” It had been that way when Vicki had died, his friends had all been there to help him through it and even though some of them had known the truth about what had happened to her and had deliberately kept it from him, he didn’t blame them any longer. They had only been looking out for him and he always tried to do the same for them as well. As Mason spoke again, Matt nodded. “I guess so. I know Ty’s parents kept wanting him to study but at least they cared enough to try and help him do well,” he shrugged. It hadn’t been that way for Matt, his mom had been gone so much and even when she was around she had never cared about how he or Vicki were doing at school. He had never doubted that she loved them both but she had never been much of a parent and he would be lying if he said that there hadn’t been a few times when he’d found himself feeling a little jealous when Ty had told him about some of the encouragement his own parents had been giving him. Even with all of the pressure he had faced Mason had made something of himself and Matt honestly believed that Ty would too once he finally decided to knuckle down and put the work in. He had so many different options ahead of him but it wasn’t like that for Matt. He knew he wanted to make a difference with his life so he had been thinking about joining the police but he honestly wasn’t sure if it would be a good fit for him. “You think so?” he asked as Mason said that Liz would be glad to have someone like him in the department. It was true that he knew the town and the people in it but that could be both a blessing and a curse sometimes. “It’s about six months and then there’s a probationary period after that.”MASON LOCKWOOD

”A few times, yeah,” Mason admitted, his chuckle trailing off. On the outside that might’ve looked like some sort of privilege, but what it meant was that as long as he hadn’t been creating a scene, his parents hadn’t cared. He could’ve pushed the barriers, bringing home report cards full of Ds and they’ve have punished him, but straight As and Bs and the impression that he was gonna go to college and study exactly what they’d wanted him to had bought him a lot of freedom. Some part of him had wished it was different. Other kids had parents who called them home to do homework and have dinner together as a family. His had only grown bothered when they’d realised he was hanging out with Maya instead of kids from the approved list (AKA kids who could trace their family lines back to the Founding families).
Richard’s stories about him had probably painted his life in an entirely different way. Mason wasn’t sure how much Ty remembered outside of that. Colour rose in Mason’s face as Matt admitted with Ty had told him. Maybe it wasn’t that far from the truth. ”Sounds like an urban legend to me,” he murmured, but he was smiling at Matt again all the same. ”It’s definitely not that way these days.” Katherine had done enough of a number on him that coming to trust anybody again had proved almost impossible. Maya was the exception to that, although things weren’t that way between the two of them. Their friendship had its lines, even if some of them had grown a little blurry for him at times. It just felt like a miracle that she’d forgiven him at all for taking off the way he had. Mason nodded as he raked his teeth over his lower lip. ”That’s just what it’s like with Maya,” he admitted. ”I’m just glad I don’t have to come from as far away these days.” The same probably couldn’t have been said by Ty, but he was still hoping that his nephew would come around to fully trusting him. He’d been back in town for years now, and that had to mean something.
Being a responsible uncle meant trying to guide Ty, but there was no way he could ever be as strict as Richard had been. Maybe that was something Carol wasn’t so happy about, there was nothing he was gonna do about it though. Her way hadn’t been working any better than Richard’s had. ”They cared, sure, but it takes more than that to be a good parent,” Mason said quietly. ”Richard’s expectations were too high. There was no way Ty could ever live up to them.” That hadn’t stopped him from trying to, before he’d realised it was a losing game, the exact same way he had at his age. For a kid whose mom had spent more time on a stool right here than she had actually parenting him, it had to look different. Maybe to Matt Richard and Carol had looked like near perfect parents, but he hadn’t grown up under that pressure the same way Ty had. Still, he’d turned out like a good kid, one capable of taking care of himself when there wasn’t anyone else around to do that.
Maya probably would’ve been encouraging Matt to join the fire department rather than the police department, seeing Matt as level headed and hard working. Studying him, Mason figured that meant he’d make a good cop too. He nodded slowly at Matt, one corner of his mouth kicking up. ”I know so. She’s seen you grow up, she knows how much work you put in when something interests you.” And maybe that meant she’d be willing to go the extra mile to make sure Matt got through the training. ”That’ll go by in a flash. Trust me. The fire academy wasn’t a cake walk, but I wouldn’t have swapped a single minute of it. When’s the next class start through the academy?” If he could talk Matt into it, he would. Once he was on the job, it would all seem a hundred times easier.
