Mystic Falls wasn’t that different to New Orleans in a lot of respects but it had to be said that it was good to be able to live without having to worry what each different faction was going to do. Kaleb had often felt like they were all just teetering on a knife edge in New Orleans and that was definitely not something that he missed. He had known that he’d needed a fresh start after his parents died and he recovered from what the doctors had feared might be permanent paralysis but the sudden pull he had felt towards Mystic Falls when his brother’s magic was awakened was something that Kaleb hadn’t expected at all. He still hadn’t met Isaac, the guy had moved away before he had found his way to Mystic Falls but he had met his brother’s friends and some of them had become friends to him as well. In a way it was good to be able to get to know his brother through the people who meant so much to him and even though Kaleb knew that he and Isaac were two very different people who had led very different lives he had still found himself welcomed by his brother’s friends. Scott had even offered to let him join the pack and Kaleb would be lying if he said that he hadn’t thought about it but he knew that it wasn’t something that he could rush into. He had never been a part of a real pack before, a couple of his friends were from New Orleans were werewolves but Kaleb had only found out that he carried the gene as well shortly before he had triggered his curse. His parents had hidden it from him until then so the idea of embracing that side of him and joining a pack was something that he wanted to make sure that he was ready for. Right now he was just doing his best to live his life the way he wanted to even with the full moon putting a spanner in the works every month. At first Kaleb had wondered if he would ever truly get used to the feeling of every one of his bones breaking and reforming but the more he went through it the easier it got and now he was almost used to it. It still wasn’t a pleasant feeling but there was nothing like being able to run free during the night of the full moon and that was something that he wouldn’t give up for anything in the world. He was glad that he still had his magic, though. He hadn’t known that he was a hybrid until his dad urged him to trigger his werewolf curse and save himself, until then he had thought that he was just a warlock but now he was a part of both worlds. Very few people knew that about him but thankfully those who did accepted him for it and he was truly grateful to them for that. One advantage of being a warlock as well was that when he shifted back he was able to do so into a clothed form rather than having to try to find his way to a bag of clothes he had left somewhere safe ready for the morning and it was as he shifted back and slipped his hands into the pockets of the jacket that he looked up to see a familiar face heading his way. “Hey Stiles, you’re doing the clothes run this morning?” he asked, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at his friend, knowing that if Stiles was here then the others couldn’t be too far away. This was way more comfortable in the summer. You could roll the windows down, let a bit of breeze in as you sat there, maybe you even got lucky and got a sweet ass sunset to look at. In winter? Ugh. Stiles hunched down in the front seat, cupping his hands over his mouth to blow into them. It probably would’ve been warmer waiting for them all outside Roscoe rather than inside, at least then he would’ve been on the move. His usually methods had failed on the jeep’s heater - there was nothing to duct tape (sealing up the vents that were letting the cold air leak in was a superfast route to carbon monoxide poisoning) and thumping it had only given him an extra week of vaguely warm air puffing out of it in weak spurts. Grumbling, Stiles tugged his coat tighter around himself and stared out at the words. Reason number 2 for not heading out there. The sun was definitely on its way up, the first rosy streaks were already melting their way across the dark sky. In about twenty minutes there’d be a bunch of bare assed shifters stumbling their way out of the woods, but for now they were still animals, still dangerous if they didn’t have an anchor to try and hold on to some bit of themselves. Each month he played the game, how close he’d wait before he headed out there. Today he made it to five minutes before and then he hopped out.
Bags of clothes were thrown over his shoulder - Scott, Malia, Liam, Riley, Erica … so many more now than when they’d started - but hey, that was a good thing, it proved Scott’s pack was a successful one. Unlike the way Derek’s had been. Nope, he wasn’t gonna bad mouth it, not even in his head, cause not all of that had been Derek’s fault and hey, the Hale’s loss had been Scott’s gain - including bringing Derek himself under the wing so to speak. Huh, what were Derek’s morning after arrangements these days? It’d been months since Scott had bitten him and turned him back. Maybe he was chained up in his apartment, although Derek had never done that before. Another question on the long list in his head to ask, when Derek was in the mood to answer and not to just throttle him again.
Stiles traipsed through the woods - nope, no warmer out here - skipping over a downed tree and heading for the clearing that’d become the designated spot for everybody re-emerging. All those bags to set in a neat row … a discrete distance away from one another. Their group of friends, and the pack, had grown almost exponentially since they’d gone chasing after Allison and that thing that had brought her out of Hell. Each nightmare they’d had to face had brought another group of friends closer to them. Stefan, Caroline, Tatia … he tipped his head side to side, counting them off as he approached the clearing and saw the first shifter pop back up - or was that slide back? Did either count when you could actually switch back fully dressed rather than buck naked. ”Hey Kaleb,” Stiles shot back, smirking as he approached. He slugged the hybrid lightly in the shoulder before he stopped dropping the bags around. ”I drew the short straw. Nearly froze my ass off doing it. I’m betting it’s gonna be worse for them though. You see any of them heading this way?” Would he have remembered if he did? Hmm. Stiles raised his brows, looking at Kaleb like he’d catch that thought through like telepathic powers or something (even though that was definitely a psychic thing and not a werewolf-warlock hybrid one).

Kaleb had been brought up as a warlock so he had always known that the supernatural world existed but his adoptive parents had made sure that his werewolf side stayed hidden. He hadn’t even known about it until the day his mom had died in a car crash and his dad had made Kaleb kill him so he would trigger his werewolf curse and survive. Kaleb’s whole world had been turned upside down that day but with the help of his friends he had picked himself up and he had survived. For a while they had all thought that he would never walk again but he hadn’t given up and he had finally managed to get back on his feet. He had wanted nothing more than to get out of New Orleans after that so it had been easy to make the decision to move to Mystic Falls with his friends. He hadn’t known why he had felt drawn to that town in particular but now he knew that it was because his twin brother had been there. Isaac had already been long gone by the time Kaleb had arrived but he had managed to get to know some of his brother’s friends during the years that he had been attending Whitmore and the truth was that he felt close to him even if they had never actually met. He still had his friends around him but Kaleb had managed to get to know others around town as well. He could definitely see why Isaac considered Scott’s pack to be his family and if he was honest Kaleb was starting to feel the same way. For a while now he had been thinking about asking if he could join the pack but he wasn’t sure if that would be a little too weird for them so he had refrained so far but he was still tempted. He had an advantage that none of them did in that when he changed back he was able to use his magic to make sure that he did so already dressed which meant that he didn’t have to worry about stashing clothes around the woods or making sure that there was someone there to bring some for them but he still sometimes spent the night of the full moon with them. Last night he had seen some of them but they had looked pretty worried about something and the conversation had seemed pretty intense so he hadn’t wanted to intrude and had done his own thing instead. As he changed back he couldn’t see or hear any of the others but he soon spotted Stiles doing the morning clothes run for the others and it was enough to bring a smile to Kaleb’s lips. He had never come across a pack that had members who weren’t werecreatures in it before but there were a few in Scott’s pack and one of them always did the drop off for the others. Nudging Stiles’ arm back in return, Kaleb couldn’t help but laugh as his friend said he drew the short straw and nearly froze doing it. “I can imagine. As much as you love Roscoe I bet the drive here wasn’t any fun,” he chuckled. How Stiles’ jeep was still going he had no idea. “It’ll definitely be worse for them, they’ll be glad for any extra layers you’ve brought this morning,” he nodded. As Stiles asked if he had seen any of them heading this way, Kaleb shook his head and turned back to look the way he had come from. “No, I haven’t,” he said, his eyes searching the area for any sign of them but finding none so he turned back to look at Stiles. “At least I can make it a little warmer for them when they get here,” he added before muttering a spell under his breath to warm this section of the woods for them. “That should help,” he nodded. “I saw them last night and Scott and Riley looked pretty upset about something. Is everything okay?”STILES STILINSKI

The world had seemed a crazy enough place when Scott had been bitten by Peter Hale and had turned into a werewolf – like mind blowing crazy. If you’d told him then that werewolves were just the tip of the iceberg then he’d have called bullshit. Hell, there were even times now when he did. How could you not? Like seriously. Vampires, witches, banshees, freaky deaky hybrids of just about everything else known to man, including things that could literally change into you with just a thought (which, honestly, he was grateful Derek had never done to him). Doppelgangers! Another thing to get his head around. The normal human stuff should’ve been easy after that, but secret twins? He’d almost laughed out loud when he’d heard that Isaac’s identical twin was in town. That was hokey Hollywood shit – although, honestly, what wasn’t these days.
Stiles had to give it to the guy, he’d seemed to fit in to everything without too much trouble. Finding out you’d been the lucky one – you could’ve been adopted by an abusive asshole instead – can't have been easy. Those nasty little truths stuck in your brain like rose thorns, choosing the worst possible times to stab deep again. He knew how those were, had probably ended up with more mental scars than he was ever gonna admit from them all. Kaleb might’ve been the same, but he stayed quiet on the subject too, at least with him. Contrary to popular belief there were times when he could keep his mouth shut.
This wasn’t exactly one of those times. Standing still out in the woods wasn’t gonna do much for the cold, but yapping while he waited for the others to emerge and get dressed would take his mind off of it at least. Stiles stuffed his hands in his pockets and bounced lightly on his toes. ”Considering the heater’s not worked in like three years, nope. Might as well have just walked out here.” And risked becoming puppy chow for any of the things that were still running around out here in the dark. Shooting Kaleb a wry smile, Stiles snorted. ”I thought you guys were all meant to run hot. Is that some Twilight crap too?” He toed at one of the bags, frowning like suddenly some new layer of mystery had been stripped away from the supernatural.
If they all came out of the woods now, shivering and bitching about the cold too, Stiles guessed he would have his answer. They’d be glad for even the scant cover Roscoe could give if they wanted to catch a ride back home. When he got to the apartment – for that brief stop before he headed for the library – he'd be chugging coffee to warm himself back up. He’d need it too. Fisting his hands in his pockets wasn’t exactly doing much. ”Let’s hope they hurry up, before we starting losing fingers.” Woah. Having seen what Bonnie and some of the others could do, Stiles knew that magic was pretty handy, but he hadn’t known that just a couple of words could affect a local space like this, almost as though they’d suddenly been thrown in a bubble of heat. ”You’re a miracle worker. I could kiss you for that.” Maybe he could talk Kaleb into doing it in Roscoe before he left. Stiles stopped mid-bounce on his toes again as Kaleb asked about Riley and Scott. ”I guess you haven’t heard about Danny,” he said hoarsely. ”He got marked for death by a darach.” Compared to what had happened in New Orleans at times, that might not seem like anything but another Tuesday. It was to them though.

Kaleb hadn’t really known what to think at first when he’d met people who knew Isaac but he had always been pretty good at adapting to new situations so he had taken it in his stride. At first he had wondered whether it might be a bit strange for them having him around while his brother wasn’t but they hadn’t seemed to mind too much either and while he wasn’t actually a part of the pack, he could at least call them his friends. Kaleb had been able to learn quite a bit about Isaac over his time in Mystic Falls and he couldn’t help but feel bad about what his brother had been through but the truth was that his upbringing hadn’t been ideal either. Opening up about that wasn’t something that was particularly easy for him to do, though, and to this day he hadn’t told any of his new friends about the fact that he’d had to kill his dad in order to trigger his curse and survive the crash that had almost claimed the lives of his parents and himself. Truth be told he wasn’t sure how to have that conversation with anyone who hadn’t been there with him through everything and he didn’t know how to open up about his temporary paralysis after the accident either. Kaleb was good at making friends but when it came to opening up about his past, that was something that was much easier said than done. It was easier to focus on what was going on right now rather than what had happened in the past and talking to Stiles was definitely a good distraction. “To be honest I’m amazed it still runs with the amount of duct tape holding it together,” Kaleb chuckled. He knew that that was usually Stiles’ go to solution for any problem but unfortunately it couldn’t fix everything no matter what he might think. There was something that could help if Stiles didn’t want to take the jeep to a garage, though, and Kaleb’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “Want me to take a look at it?” he asked, knowing that he might be able to use a little magic to get the heater to work. As Stiles spoke again, Kaleb couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s definitely Twilight crap. We don’t run hot at all,” he grinned. “I don’t think that will be a problem,” Kaleb said, a smirk forming on his face as Stiles said he hoped the others hurried up before the two of them started losing fingers. Kaleb hadn’t known he was a werewolf until the crash but he had known he was a warlock for a long time so a simple spell to heat the area they were standing in was nothing as far as he was concerned. It made a world of difference, though, and Kaleb couldn’t help but smile as Stiles spoke again. “One of the perks of being a warlock as well as a werewolf,” he grinned. He knew that people who were born hybrids like him were rare, he had figured that much out at least, but to be honest it was a relief to him to still have his connection to his magic considering that it had been a part of him for such a long time. As Stiles mentioned that Danny had been marked for death by a darach, Kaleb frowned. “I do remember hearing about that but that happened a while ago, didn’t it?” he asked, pretty sure that Danny had said he’d been living with the mark for a while. “Has something else happened?” he asked, unaware that Danny had now gone missing. He wasn’t Jackson Whittemore, his parents hadn’t bought him a Porsche when he’d passed his test. By then it had just been him and his dad. If Roscoe hadn’t been slowly rusting in the garage, there wouldn’t have been money for a brand new car – not that he’d have wanted one. More likely than not he’d have been riding to school on a bike – not a motorbike like Scott either, his dad wouldn’t have gone for that. His mom’s treatment had sucked every penny out of his dad’s bank account, not that he ever would’ve said that it had been a waste. They’d tried everything to keep his mom with it and despite the brutality of it, Stiles wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. He’d felt what it was like to start losing his mind, even if it hadn’t been dementia that was chewing at his brain in the end. He wouldn’t have wished it on anybody else. So, it was Roscoe or nothing and that was a choice he didn’t imagine any of the pack wanted to make between riding back to school this morning and walking back there.
Stiles snorted at Kaleb, puffing his chest out with pride. There wasn’t much on Roscoe that was original anymore, other than the slowly rusting shell of the jeep. Parts had been replaced one at a time as he’d been able to afford them, what he hadn’t gotten to yet was patched, held together by duct tape and the vain hope that it would stay running until he’d squirrelled away just enough to get Roscoe the full make over treatment. ”You and everybody else who’s ever seen it,” Stiles puffed. ”I’m not gonna question it at this point. Roscoe got me here and it’s gonna get us back again. Cross your fingers.” Stiles lifted his chin at his warning, holding up his hand with his fingers already crossed. His brows knit together, then hitched at Kaleb’s offer. Others had taken a look under the hood and had immediately conceded defeat. ”You know cars?” he asked, more than a little doubt in his tone. Waving off Kaleb’s disagreement, Stiles sighed. ”I know, I know. They’re not wrong about vamps being cold though…” Unless they were necking coffee and keeping their all blood – he shuddered at the thought – diet supplemented with human food. That was a double edged blessing, who the hell was gonna suspect someone of being a vamp when they were chowing down on cheeseburgers and curly fries on the regular?
The wry smile tugged at Stiles’ lips as he started to bounce on his toes again, trying to work some warmth back into them. ”For you maybe. Not all of us have super healing.” Or strength, or speed. Some of them were painfully – literally right now – normal. And freaking relieved when those of them who weren’t could pull off tricks that had the area around them warming up like someone had suddenly lit up a camp fire. Stiles let out a long breath, tugging his hands out of his pockets to spread them in the air like he was basking them in front of flames. ”Alright, now you’re just showing off,” he said with a snort. It had helped though, so he wasn’t gonna argue about that too much. Stiles slipped his hands back into his pockets, settling – still – for a minute as he brought up Danny. ”Yeah, months back. They’ve been expecting whoever did it to show up since.” Raking his teeth over his upper lip, Stiles nodded. ”They think they might have done finally. Danny vanished from the campus. No one’s heard anything from him. There’s a chance he could be … you know …” Dead. None of them wanted to say the word aloud, especially around Riley. This had to be chewing the guy up inside.

Kaleb knew that right now he was still on the outside of the pack somewhat but they were still friends and he knew that he would help in any way that he could. It had been a big decision to move to Mystic Falls when he had felt himself being pulled there and he didn’t regret it, he hadn’t met Isaac yet but he had learned about his brother through some of the people who were closest to him and that was never going to be a bad thing as far as Kaleb was concerned. He would be lying if he said that he hadn’t thought about asking to join the pack, after all there was definitely safety in numbers, but in the back of his mind he still wondered if it might be too strange for them having him so close given his connection to Isaac. It was something that had been playing on his mind more and more often lately, though, and he knew that he was going to have to figure something out sooner or later. He was so used to going it alone or relying on the friends who had moved with him from New Orleans but they had all had to go home to be with their families. They had asked Kaleb to go with them and he had thought about it but his family was all gone apart from Isaac and being in Mystic Falls made him feel closer to his brother so he’d decided to stay at least until college came to an end. Perhaps that was crazy after everything that his friends had done for him, they were the family that he had chosen, but there were so many bad memories in New Orleans and if he was honest Kaleb knew that he wasn’t ready to go back there and face them. “I’ll keep them crossed for you, don’t worry,” Kaleb chuckled. Whether or not Roscoe would get anyone back home remained to be seen but he hoped that it would because it was clear how much the jeep meant to Stiles. As Stiles asked if he knew cars, Kaleb shrugged. “My dad taught me a little but magic is something I definitely know.” He might not be able to fix the heater in the conventional way but he was certain that he could work a little magic to get it working. It might not be a permanent fix but it would at least do the trick until Stiles was able to get it repaired properly. “I guess you’ve got a point there although I think a lot of other sources have that down too,” he shrugged. Vampires being cold was something that a lot of different books and movies had come up with so it wasn’t a surprise that that part was true. “There are ways they can make themselves warm to the touch though so I guess they’re half right,” he added with a shrug. One of his friends from New Orleans was a vampire and he had met others during his time in Mystic Falls so at least they had a way of flying under the radar. “Your best friend’s a True Alpha, you could if you wanted to,” Kaleb shrugged. He could understand why Stiles wanted to stay human but at the same time being a werewolf definitely had its advantages as well. Kaleb had known about the supernatural world his whole life given that he had been raised a warlock but now he was involved with it in a different way and he couldn’t deny that it felt good to be able to help out. As Stiles said he was just showing off now, Kaleb couldn’t help but laugh. “Would you rather I made it cold again?” he teased, knowing that he wouldn’t do that even if Stiles said that he would. It was more comfortable now even for him so he knew that he wasn’t going to be cruel. “That makes sense, with things like that it’s only a matter of time,” he nodded as Stiles said they had been waiting for the person to show up ever since the brand had done. “I hope not, he’s a good guy,” Kaleb admitted. “Do you need some help with the search? I could try a locator spell,” he offered although of course that might only work if Danny was still alive. STILES STILINSKI

Lydia hated Roscoe. If she had her way the jeep would end up on the scrap heap, after he’d had to pay someone to take it, it’s value already deep into the negative. Keeping Roscoe on the road was a constant money suck at a time when they probably couldn’t afford it, but even thinking about getting rid of the jeep had his chest going tight. Oh yeah, there it was. Stiles puffed out a breath, propping his hands on his hips like he was about to get light headed. It was pretty much the last part of his mom that he had left and that made it far more than an unreliable ride. Maybe eventually they’d get a car that was theirs the same way the apartment was, Roscoe put aside as his weekend project, something to tinker with when he had a spare moment. Lydia would love it, and he’d miss it like a limb someone had lopped off.
The corner of Stiles’ mouth curled up as Kaleb chuckled out a promise – it would definitely take far more than a little luck to keep Roscoe going further than just the next mile or two. His brows rose, the same way his chin had, although those lines remained between them. ”You can magic Roscoe into continuing to run? Why didn’t anybody tell me this before?” He tried to put a note of complaint in his voice but it rapidly cracked into amusement. Even if someone could pull a wand and do a little Harry Potter spell work to make it happen, he wasn’t so sure he’d want it that way. It wasn’t like there was much in his life that was supernatural free at the moment after all. Practically everybody around him was something, and if they weren’t, then he was suspecting that they were just hiding it well. ”Some of those ways, I don’t think I want to think about,” Stiles said dryly. ”I guess anybody that puts too much of the truth out there about them is gonna be painting a target on their backs.” The things that scared the crap out of you weren’t going to want to publicise all their weaknesses, all their little tells. That was how you ended up dead.
Stiles shuddered again, the bouncing doing very little to either warm him up, or settle nerves that were jangling. Where was everybody else anyway? He glanced up at the woods, wishing they’d hurry up so that they could all get out of here. Kaleb’s suggestion pulled his gaze back, his frown deepening. ”I could’ve had Peter turn me too, but it was a hard pass then, and a hard pass now, thanks.” He’d had a ring side seat to the way becoming a werewolf had turned Scott’s life upside down, had helped prop Scott up when all of that got too much. After that there was no way he wanted to go through the same thing, just for some added strength and speed and a pretty pair of yellow eyes. If he was like them he wouldn’t have been cold … ”I didn’t say that,” Stiles huffed. ”Let’s keep it going. I’d rather not be blue when they get back here.” From whatever distant mountain top they’d ended up on when they turned back.
Any amusement he’d been able to drag up rapidly disappeared as conversation turned to Danny. Stiles swallowed hard, that broken glass feeling back in his throat. ”I’ve freaking hoped so, but so far he hasn’t poked a toe out from whatever rock he’s hiding under.” That shiver was back, leaving him moving closer to the fire. ”You could do that? I know they tried to track the darach, but…” He shook his head. They’d gotten nowhere with it before Danny had disappeared. ”Yeah, man, we’d definitely appreciate it. You gonna be free after this?” Everybody probably had other stuff planned, but for this they could probably get the whole pack together to try and make something happen.

Kaleb had grown up knowing that he was a warlock and he’d always had friends around him but triggering his werewolf curse and then getting to know the pack he could see why his werewolf friends had always craved that connection of others like them. Turning into a werewolf every full moon was painful and no one who hadn’t gone through it would ever be able to understand just how true that was but Kaleb was getting used to it and he was glad that there were others around who had to go through the same thing. In a way he and his friends weren’t that different to the pack, they were all different species and they didn’t care what anyone thought of them but seeing the way Scott, Stiles and the others stuck together through everything was making him wonder what it might be like to be a part of that. Some of his friends had returned to New Orleans to help their families and they had asked Kaleb to go with them but the truth was that after losing his parents in the way he had done and spending so long thinking that he wasn’t going to walk again New Orleans just didn’t feel like home to him any longer so he knew that he was going to stay put, at least for the time being. That meant trying something new, though, and Kaleb knew that he was going to have to talk to Scott and see if he could join the pack officially. He was friends with them and he helped them out on occasion but it wasn’t anything official and he knew that it would be good to change that. For now catching up with Stiles seemed like a good thing to do and he couldn’t help but laugh as Stiles spoke. “It would only be a temporary fix but it might mean Roscoe will live a little longer,” he chuckled. Honestly he didn’t know how the jeep was still going at this point but it was clear how much it meant to Stiles so if the guy did want him to take a look then he knew that he would do it. “Probably best not to,” he agreed as Stiles said he didn’t want to think about some of the ways in which vampires could make themselves warm to the touch. “Exactly. The supernatural world has stayed a secret from most for this long, having someone put too much of the truth out there won’t do anyone any good,” he offered. There were plenty of supernaturals who just wanted to blend in and live their lives but there were also hunters out there who didn’t want to let that happen. Having everyone learn about the supernatural would only spread panic and that was something that was best avoided especially after the hit list almost ruined everything. Growing up as a warlock meant that Kaleb had always had his magic at his disposal but he couldn’t deny that there was a part of him that liked the enhanced strength, senses and healing that came from being a werewolf as well. It put him in a much better position to protect the people he cared about but he nodded as Stiles said that becoming a werewolf was a hard pass. “I’ll admit, the perks aren’t worth the pain of transforming,” he admitted. He might be getting used to that now but it still hurt and he knew that chances were it always would. “Alright, I’d rather not explain why you’ve become a Stiles shaped block of ice by the time they get back,” he teased. Listening out for the others, Kaleb couldn’t hear anything at all but they knew where Stiles would be meeting them so he was sure that they would turn up sooner or later. As Stiles asked if he could help, Kaleb nodded. “Of course. I can’t promise I’ll be able to find the darach but I should be able to track Danny or at the very least find his last location.” Kaleb knew how this worked but the others probably didn’t, if Danny was still alive then a locator spell would find him but if not then it would lead him to the place where the guy died and from there they should be able to catch his scent which that had to be better than searching blindly for him. “Yeah, I’m free. We’ll find him.”STILES STILINSKI

He hated cheating – full on trying to game the system so you came out on top – but bending the rules a little? Yeah, he was as tempted by that as much as anybody was (sainthood definitely didn’t exist in his book). You put a toe over the line, especially when you ended up in the sort of situations that they usually did. Sometimes the little white lies he told for everybody’s good stuck in Stiles’ throat, but he forced them out anyway. He tried to keep his promises to his dad these days, sticking to the rules as far as he could. They’d almost made it through four years of college without any major difficulties and he hadn’t been arrested yet – bonus.
If getting Kaleb to put some sorta spell on Roscoe counted as putting a slight kink in the rules, then he’d take the smudge on his karma for it. It wasn’t like he didn’t try and keep the jeep in good condition, but it’d never been meant to run as long as it had and bit by bit it was like it was trying to fall apart on him. ”Don’t even think about Roscoe doing anything but living,” Stiles warned, putting a finger up to his lips like he could squash the suggestion. ”I’ll take even a five minute fix these days.” While other things in his life had started to settle down – while he’d settled down with Lydia – Roscoe had continued to slowly decay, threatening to end up in the great scrap heap in the sky before too much longer.
Going toe to toe with a psycho Alpha and a kanima hadn’t done the jeep much good and each incident involving it since then had just scarred it more and more. He’d learned the hard way not to put Roscoe – and himself, when he could help it – in danger’s way. They’d lost people that way, some at his own hands. Stiles knew he didn’t have the right to tell anybody else to keep themselves out of trouble, but if anybody knew the consequences of hanging your ass out in the wind, it was him. ”The understatement of the year,” Stiles agreed, the corner of his mouth kicking up slightly. ”It’s not easy to protect people from themselves when they don’t have the full story though. Warn them that going out in the woods is dangerous and … well …” He huffed out a laugh and spread his arms like he was explaining his own presence here – not that he was out here for fun. This was to protect the pack and he’d do anything to make that happen.
Thinking about someone catching them out here on the morning after the full moon had Stiles wrapping his arms back around himself extra tight. Between the cold and the inner chill, he was gonna end up blue, even with Kaleb’s fire. His brows were furrowed tight, the laugh that was wrung out of him tight. ”I guess they’ve got their moments when they come in handy.” He’d thought maybe it was like childbirth – you went through the most agonising thing, but once it was over the memory softened and you forgot just how much it hurt. The corners of Stiles’ mouth lifted in a smirk, his fingers tapping over his heart. ”You really do care … it’s appreciated, even if you’re just doing it to avoid a ‘what the hell’ from Scott.”
The smile he’d been wearing on and off had faded the moment they started talking about Danny. Not knowing where he’d gone, whether the darach had just taken him or … Stiles swallowed back the sick feeling, his shoulders hunching tighter. ”That’d help,” he muttered. ”Just knowing where to start digging …” And yeah, he was wincing at that because he didn’t want to think about what they might have to do when they did find him. This wasn’t like what had happened to Riley, they hadn’t been there to see it, for someone to be able to make sure that Danny wasn’t gone long. Stiles nodded at Kaleb’s reassurance, his frown deepening. He couldn’t tell Riley exactly what they were doing, that was just gonna tear at him more. ”We think he was at Whitmore when it happened, on campus. You think you can track him, even with everybody traipsing all over that place?” He was thinking of it like it was a crime scene, but the magical side of things never worked the same way that forensics did.

“I hate to break it to you Stiles but he won’t live forever,” Kaleb shrugged. Honestly from what he had heard it was a miracle that the Jeep had managed to make it this long. He wasn’t sure how long the fix he could do would last for but getting the heater to work even for a little while would no doubt make things better for Stiles and that was never going to be a bad thing. “I’ll do my best,” Kaleb nodded as Stiles said he would take even a five minute fix. “I can take a look at it now while we wait for the others, if you like,” he offered, knowing that he didn’t really have anything dragging him away. He had his friends from New Orleans still in his corner but he really did care about Stiles and the others and even if he could help a little then he knew that he would do it. “I know it’s not but it’s safer this way. If too many people find out then we’ll have the Salem witch trials on our hands again before we know it,” Kaleb shrugged. “Without proof most people probably wouldn’t believe it even if they were told the truth though,” he added. It was a lot to take in, that was for sure, and Kaleb knew that a lot of people wouldn’t want to accept what they were being told because it meant that everything they knew would change. Kaleb had grown up knowing that he was a part of the supernatural world but it wasn’t that way for a lot of people and he could only imagine the chaos it would cause if suddenly the veil was lifted and everyone learned about the supernatural world. Kaleb had grown up knowing that he was a warlock but his parents had kept him in the dark about the fact that he was also a werewolf. It was only after the accident that he was told how to trigger his curse and from that moment on he’d had to deal with the pain of transforming with every full moon. There were still perks that came with being a werewolf but he knew that he would give those up and go back to being just a warlock in an instant if it meant that he wouldn’t have to transform every full moon. At least he was able to change back clothed, though, he was glad that he didn’t have to worry about that each time like the others did. “It’s not just because of that. You’re my friend, you all are,” he shrugged. He’d joked about Stiles becoming a block of ice but the truth was that there was no way he would have let that happen anyway. “I get it. I’ll do what I can,” Kaleb assured him, his expression softening as he looked over at Stiles. He could see just how worried the guy was and he couldn’t blame him, he didn’t know Danny half as well as the others did but even Kaleb knew that he wouldn’t just disappear. He had so many people around him who loved him and right now they had no way of knowing what had happened to him so Kaleb knew that he would do everything in his power to help them find him. What would happen then he wasn’t sure, he had heard about spells that could bring people back from the dead but he didn’t know any himself and he wasn’t sure that he would be strong enough anyway. They would cross that bridge when they came to it, though. As Stiles spoke again, Kaleb’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I’ll need something that belongs to Danny, something he either wears a lot or is special to him, but with that I should be able to find him,” he nodded. “It will take time with the size of the place but it’s not impossible.”STILES STILINSKI

”How could you!” Stiles croaked, clutching at his chest as though he was on the brink of a heart attack. He wasn’t about to call it some sort of PTSD attachment issue, but the thought of losing the jeep was almost as traumatising as the thought of losing Scott, or his dad, or even Lydia. It was the one part of his mom he still had with him, battered and bruised, only running thanks to the near indestructibility of duct tape. If he had to wrap Roscoe in it from bumper to bumper to keep it going, then he’d do it. Maybe Kaleb wouldn’t have to do that – especially since he was actually good with cars and not just working from a YouTube video and the ideas pinging around inside of his head like a pinball. Stiles glanced over his shoulder, like the pack was gonna choose that minute to come out of the woods. ”Yeah … yeah, I’d appreciate that.” There’d certainly be less bitching on the way back if the Jeep was running a little smoother.
Driving back into town on the morning after a full moon looked suspicious enough. At least for now they had the excuse of being a bunch of teenagers who, to be pretty honest, looked like they’d spent the night out partying. They wouldn’t have that excuse much longer, not with graduation coming up. "It’s a double edged sword,” Stiles huffed out. ”Maybe you’re right, maybe they won’t, but until some of them start believing that there’s some sort of trouble out here – human or not – they’re gonna keep getting in over their heads.” He supposed he couldn’t talk after everything that had happened in Beacon Hills, and after they’d gotten here. Even weretigers looked to have 9 lives, but in Mystic Falls they’d be running out fast.
”I know man,” Stiles drawled as Kaleb shrugged. He chuckled and slugged Kaleb in the shoulder with a fist. Back home there’d been definite divides between some people, especially before Scott had made the lacrosse team. Lydia probably wouldn’t have recognised him from a hole in the ground before high school. Things had started to change when Peter had come out of his coma and gone all Alpha Loco. It had shifted again when they’d followed Allison and that thing in her here. Maybe there’d been a little mistrust at first, but now it was like they had multiple people to lean on when things went bad, just as it had done with Danny going missing.
That thought had the sick feeling swimming back into his gut. Everybody had tried to pitch in, but Danny was still missing and they hadn’t had a single lead other than ‘some mysterious darach family have spent centuries marking Danny’s family for death’. Stiles’ frown deepened, his hands returning to his pockets and his shoulders hunching despite the heat that was rolling off of the fire Kaleb had built. Hope tried to cut through the nausea, but it was still just a silver lining around a huge dark cloud for now. He tipped his head back towards the trees. ”Riley will have something. We can swing by when we get into town. I’m sure he’ll be willing to give you everything he’s got if it’s gonna get Danny back. What about if someone took Danny out of there? Riley got snatched up a few years ago, maybe it’s something like that again.” Was there some sort of ritual that required a druid to complete it? Maybe they ought to have gone out to the tomb again to see if someone had tried the same trick yet again.

“It’s the truth but I’ll do what I can to help,” Kaleb said gently. At the end of the day the jeep wasn’t going to be able to keep going forever but he hoped he might be able to help Stiles with it a little at least. Kaleb knew that the jeep meant a lot to Stiles but he hadn’t expected quite that reaction from him. It didn’t even look like he was messing around, he seemed genuinely horrified at the idea of losing it so Kaleb knew that if there was anything he could do to keep it going for his friend then he would do it. He wasn’t sure just how much help he would be able to give but he would certainly try. “Alright,” he nodded as Stiles agreed to him taking a look. Climbing into the jeep, Kaleb started the engine before placing his hand against the dash and closing his eyes. It took him a little while to sense the problem and from there he used a spell to get the heating going, making sure that it was working before climbing back out again. “Try that,” he said, hoping that would be better than it was before. As Stiles spoke again, Kaleb shook his head. “You know as well as I do that people are always afraid of anyone who is different. I found some old journals my mom kept after she died, people were terrified of me before I was born because I’m a hybrid,” he shrugged. He had grown up thinking that he was a regular warlock but he had triggered his werewolf curse the day his parents died and ever since then the fact that he was different was always on his mind. “That’s true. At least here there are good people trying to keep them safe though,” he offered. There were hunters on town and plenty of people who knew about the supernatural who were trying to take care of those who were still in the dark and make sure that they didn’t find out. Kaleb had been lucky to have a great group of friends around him while he was growing up and he still had them but he had more people now as well. He had needed to get out of New Orleans after his parents died and after being pulled to Mystic Falls it had been an easy decision to put roots down there. He knew that Stiles and the others could have decided to keep their distance since he wasn’t Isaac but they hadn’t done that and he really was grateful to them for it. Now he had more people in his life that he cared about than he’d ever had before and he knew that made him lucky. Unfortunately there were still things that were going on that threatened the lives of the people he cared about and he couldn’t deny that he was worried about Danny now he knew that he was missing. Kaleb didn’t know him as well as he did some other members of the pack but he knew him well enough and he could see how worried Stiles was so he could only imagine what it was like for the rest of the pack, especially Riley. Nodding was Stiles spoke again, Kaleb’s expression softened. “I know he would, I’ve seen how much he loves Danny,” he admitted. That kind of love was something to cherish and Kaleb honestly hoped that the two of them would get the chance to have a happy ending one day but the more he was hearing the more worried he was becoming. “I guess anything is possible at this point but we can’t go looking blindly or we’ll never find him,” Kaleb said, knowing that he was going to very much be part of the search now. “Did you ever find out what the darach wanted him for?”STILES STILINSKI

Stiles nodded at Kaleb as he turned back towards him, honestly appreciative of the offer that had been made. Scott had spent whole days helping him out with Roscoe when they’d been younger, handing him tools, using it as an opportunity to hang out as much as anything. Duct tape and the smack of a hammer against a piece of the engine that had jammed, more prayers than anything holding the jeep together in the end. He’d done that again if he had to, but as Kaleb climbed in and held his hand against the dash board like an osteopath trying to find the knot in a tight muscle, Stiles hoped that it wasn’t gonna come to that again any time soon. He couldn’t rely on Kaleb to fix every single problem he found with - whatever it was he was using to do it – but maybe he could get the worst of them. ”You found it?” Stiles blurted. He scrambled into Roscoe and held his breath as he started up the engine. He listened to it purr for a moment – that definitely sounded smoother, right? – and then flipped on the heater. Warm air wafted out and Stiles fist pumped the air. Hell yeah.
”Any time you like need a kidney, or someone to drive the getaway car when you decide to rob a bank, I’m your man,” he promised. He had plenty of people to fall back on, even here in Mystic Falls, but Stiles wasn’t sure if Kaleb could say the same. The guy hadn’t exactly had things easy before and support from the pack here wasn’t a guarantee that he would again. ”Narrow minded idiots,” Stiles muttered, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans again, a frown settling in. ”There are things out there they should’ve been worrying about more.” But you couldn’t control what ran through their heads. One corner of Stiles’ mouth eventually lifted, along with his brows. ”You mean people like us,” he muttered. ”If only they realised how many people were already watching their back without any thanks from them.” His dad had been doing it long before he’d even really known what was going on in his town.
His dad might not have been sheriff here the same way he had been back home, but he hadn’t stopped fighting just because his job title had changed. They’d all been looking for Danny since he’d disappeared, it just hadn’t worked, and Stiles knew they were all feeling a little desperate about the whole thing. Riley was chewed up about it, feeling like it would’ve been different if he’d been with Danny when he was taken that day. ”They were getting married,” Stiles said hoarsely. There was a chance they were still gonna be able to, but with each passing day the odds had seemed lower. ”No kidding,” Stiles puffed. ”That’s all we’ve been doing so far and we haven’t found a damn thing.” The ache was growing in Stiles chest and he crossed his arms like he could hold it in as he shook his head at Kaleb. ”You mean other than him being an evil son of a bitch with a grudge towards Danny’s family? Nope. From the way Danny described it the two sides were blaming each other for whatever the hell happened back in like 200BC. You think what happened back there really matters?” If there was something that could hold a grudge forever it was definitely some ancient supernatural creature.
