It wasn’t often he reached out to outside hunters, but when you had a potentially violent werewolf running loose in a town he’d already shown absolutely no regard for, you bit down on your pride and you called in reinforcements. Gerard would’ve been spitting over, the idea that his son couldn’t handle the hunt for a single wolf – a fool at that. He wouldn’t have taken Webber’s keys in the first place, allowing the man to go ahead and complete his plan of taking his own life so he could be with his dead wife. Maybe Gerard would even have lent him a hand with it, but Chris wasn’t his father and Robert Webber was lucky for that.
Weeks of scouring the town had thrown up no sign of the werewolf – or whoever had broken him out. They’d checked the warehouse, of course, poring over every inch of it for some hint of whoever had gotten in here and had sprung open the cell. The security cameras had been conveniently put out of action with the cable supplying power to them had been damaged outside. No power, no video, no idea what direction Webber had even gone in.
Chris walked the perimeter of the warehouse again, then headed inside. They’d done this a hundred times, dozens of sets of eyes trying to find something they’d missed before. Teams of hunters were out in the woods around the town – nobody went alone, especially with the full moon coming – none of them had found a thing. Maybe Webber had finally wised up and moved on, but something in the back of his mind told him that the man was still here. It was just a matter of time before Webber ran into another hunter and decided to get blood on his hands again. The only good hunter was a dead hunter in his book, he’d as good as announced it.
Nothing again.
Cursing under his breath, Chris went back to the desk he’d set up in the holding room. A map was spread out on it, Mystic Falls in its full glory. Any body that had turned up since he’d first encountered Webber was marked on it, little black Xs that would hopefully stitch together to trace where the man had been. If Alaric could give him some insight into what else was going down in this town – and Stiles seemed to think he’d be able to do that – then maybe this would end up something more like a needle in a haybale instead of a whole haystack.
The alarm he’d set after Webber escaped beeped lightly, announcing company. He’d given the man the address of the warehouse and a time. It looked like he was punctual at least. Chris straightened up, watching a vehicle roll in on the video. If there was one person who had their finger on the real pulse of the town, it was the man who ran the school for kids like his daughter – and the pack that had changed their lives.
He waited until the vehicle had stopped outside and then moved towards the door. The loading dock door slid open without a sound. Chris stepped out, his hand already extended to the man. ”Glad you could come. I take it Stiles told you what this is all about?” Knowing Stiles he would’ve spilled the entire story in fifteen seconds flat. The kid had a decent brain, could put things together in a way even Gerard wouldn’t have managed, but he also had zero self-control and seemed to go from 0-60 in a heartbeat.

Ric would be the first to admit that looking after his ever growing family and opening the school had been keeping him busy lately but he still hadn’t lost touch with what was going on around Mystic Falls. He might not be the hardened vampire hunter he was when he’d arrived in town, he had certainly mellowed with age and becoming a father had changed him but he still knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to keep the people he loved safe. Years ago he never would have thought that he would be married to a witch, have a daughter who was a heretic, another who was a witch, a third who was a vampire, a son who was a hybrid, another who was a werewolf and a third who was a special child. Abby was the only one among them who was a regular human like he was and it was enough to make his head spin sometimes but he couldn’t deny that he loved the way things had worked out and he wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. Becoming best friends with the vampire he had thought was responsible for killing his first wife had been enough of a shock to the system but now it was just a part of his past. One thing Ric had learned over the years was that he couldn’t go back and change anything that had happened, all any of them could do was continue moving forward and make sure that they didn’t end up making the same mistakes again and he intended on doing just that. As the years had gone on Ric had taken a bit of a step back from hunting but he still went out sometimes when he caught wind of a case that he hadn’t heard about another hunter picking up and training the kids at the school had helped him keep on top of his game. He had learned so much about the supernatural world through teaching them how to control their abilities and that was something that he knew a lot of hunters couldn’t say. He wouldn’t be surprised if there were those who thought that he was a disgrace but the truth was that he didn’t care, he had learned a long time ago that the world wasn’t black and white. It was full of shades of grey and being surrounded by the family and friends he had and opening the school had taught him that not everyone who was different was evil. He knew that there were some hunters in town who had realised that as well, Alix and Chris certainly had as had Ben. Even the Winchesters seemed to have changed their views and Ric was beyond glad about that. That day he was being pulled back into the hunter life but the truth was that Ric didn’t mind. He knew that he could never turn his back on it completely, he couldn’t afford to with all of the people that he had counting on him now, but he also knew that not all supernaturals deserved to be hunted and killed so he only went after those he thought had a chance at being guided back to the right path so that he could help them and he only killed those who were beyond help. That was something that he and Chris had in common it seemed and Ric checked the address one more time as he drove in the direction of the warehouse. Chris had given him the address and Stiles had told him a little about what it was about but Ric knew that he wanted to hear it from Chris himself. Coming to a stop outside the warehouse, Ric climbed out and shook Chris’ hand without hesitation. “I’m always around to help, you know that,” he said, offering Chris a smile before letting his hand fall to his side. “He did but he was his usual hard to follow self,” he chuckled. He should be used to it by now but what Stiles had been trying to say had seemed urgent so Ric had thought it best not to stick around and try to decipher it all. “Why don’t you fill me in?”CHRIS ARGENT

Gerard had made it clear that in the end the only people you could rely on were family. It’d been obvious that he was wrong long before he’d learned just how far across the line they were supposed to draw his family had gone. They had a team of hunters for a reason, back up when they needed it, people to teach and train so they didn’t end up in a spot where they were going to get killed by their stupidity. Gerard might’ve called it good riddance to bad rubbish, but the man had rarely spoken a true word in his life. He was a manipulator, a man willing to take what he needed from the supernatural world and damn the rest of it.
In Mystic Falls he would’ve had a glut of hunters willing to do the same. After the hit list had appeared they’d started flooding to the town, not bothering to question how people had ended up on it, only that there were thousands of dollars in it for them. Robert Webber was lucky that his name hadn’t been added. The werewolf deserved it at this point, might have ended up begging for it if he’d been aware that it was an option. His attempts at stopping the man from forcing some hunter’s hand hadn’t worked, at this point it seemed as though Webber was a lost cause, not that he had any intention on giving up on it.
Chris looked up from the map of the town he’d been poring over at the beep of the alarm. Alaric Saltzman had as much skin in this game as he did – he had an entire school of supernatural kids to protect from things like Webber, and children of his own. Picking apart what Stiles and the others had told him about the guy he and Ric had plenty in common. It would make all of this easier, the team slowly spreading with every situation they unravelled here in town. He offered the man a tight smile as he emerged from his car, nodding to him as he shook his hand. ”It’s still appreciated,” he told him honestly. ”This is a big ask.” The details of which Stiles had already passed along in his own way – probably with a lot of extraneous babbling. The kid had one hell of a brain, but half the time it was like a hamster on a wheel, whirring away and not in the most productive way.
Nodding back towards the warehouse, Chris urged Ric back towards the door he’d left open when he’d emerged. They’d take another trip around outside after, but the cell inside was where the main event had taken place. A breath huffed out of him, laced with weary humour. ”Three facts in a five minute ramble?” he asked, knowing exactly what it was like. Leaping from subject to subject as Stiles’ brain fired in a dozen directions, circling back at odd moments. Chris stared at the cell as he entered the holding room, his expression tight, flat. ”Over a year ago I found a man inebriated at the Grill. He threatened to hurt himself when I followed him outside to take his keys. Had to knock him out to get them off of him. The next time I saw him he was out in the woods, washing blood off of his hands. He’d killed one of my men … after he’d been turned into a werewolf. I took him down again, brought him back here to try and get through to him. Before we could make any progress he got out. I doubt he’s left town, which means he’s out there somewhere. Have you heard anything about others being killed? He seemed pretty fixated on hunters.” The ones who’d taken his girlfriend – a story he still hadn’t gotten to the bottom of either.

For a while Ric was the only hunter in Mystic Falls but that wasn’t the case any longer. He had the most experience of the supernatural world in Mystic Falls but there were others who were fighting to keep the town safe now while Ric focused his attention on his family and the Salvatore School. He still hunted on the side but his goal these days was very different to the one he’d had when he had first arrived in Mystic Falls. Now he knew that not everyone who was supernatural was evil and he knew that he had to fight to keep them safe just as hard as he had to fight to keep the humans in town safe. So much had changed over the last few years and Ric knew that not all of it was for the better but the town had found somewhat of a balance recently and he knew that he would keep it that way if he could. There were others he trusted who had the same goals that he did and there were groups of supernaturals like Hope, Josie and their friends, Stefan, Elena and the others from Mystic Falls and Scott and the gang from Beacon Hills who all wanted to keep the town safe as well so that definitely made things much easier as far as he was concerned. Ric knew that he wasn’t rusty by any means of the world, he might not hunt as much as he once had but he was in charge of training the kids he taught in combat and training with those who were stronger and faster than he was helped to keep his skills sharp and keep his own strength up. Truth be told Ric enjoyed training with them and they were so receptive of what he had to teach them that it definitely made it worth it. Now Ric had the chance to pitch in again and help someone else out and he knew that he wasn’t going to turn them down. Stiles had asked him to meet up with Chris and that was exactly what he had done. As Chris spoke, Ric shook his head. “It’s the least I can do given you’ve kept an open mind about my school and the kids I teach,” he shrugged. He knew that it would have been easy for the hunters in town to try something but none of them had done. Even those like him who used to think that all supernaturals were evil seemed to have changed their mindset and for that he truly was grateful. Looking in the direction of the warehouse, Ric made his way over to it and started looking around. “How did you guess?” he chuckled as Chris hit exactly what Stiles had been like on the head. He hadn’t really managed to get much out of him but he knew that it would be a different story with Chris and he really was glad about that. As Chris explained what had happened, Ric’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “No, I haven’t but he could just be biding his time. Any idea who the guy is or where he came from?” he asked, knowing that would be as good a starting point as any to help them figure out whether he was going after just any hunters or whether there was a group in particular he might be targeting. Chances were that Chris’ guy who died was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. CHRIS ARGENT

Narrowmindedness had lost him his family. Victoria, Gerard and Kate would all have pointed the finger of blame squarely at the supernatural and refused to see that their mind set had been what had brought that sort of violence to their lives, or that it would eventually turn him against them when they were the only blood he had left. After it had all fallen apart Scott McCall and his pack were the people who had been there, pulling him out of the pit of depression he’d been sucked into when Allison had died. Putting him back together one hunt at a time, giving him a mission that didn’t involve slaughtering those just trying to live, or those trying to stop the violence. There were moments when Chris could still hear his father’s voice in the head, but with time and distance, and Allison’s return, that was fading. Gerard was still in his own pit on the other side of the country, slowly rotting away with the consequences of what he’d done.
Chris spread his hands in the air as he let go of Ric’s hand. These days he had clear lines he wouldn’t cross and killing kids because of what they were was well across them. If there were problems at the school then it was down to the people running it to solve them and he was in no doubt that Ric would. ”That’s the least I can do,” Chris assured him. ”If there’d been a school like that in Beacon Hills maybe things wouldn’t have ended up the way they did.” With that thing infesting Stiles and Allison bleeding out on the ground from a sword wound inflicting by things he should’ve known were coming for them.
In that moment he’d failed as a father. The years of keeping Allison blind to what their family did were well and truly over. Everything he’d tried to shield her from had swallowed her up, taking her a place that he couldn’t imagine until something had boiled up from those foul depths to bring her back. Every day after he’d wished that the clock could be turned back, for him to be able to tell her about it all instead of sitting at the kitchen table with her, giving her that cold eyed glare until she’d knuckled down on her homework – failure wasn’t an option, especially after she’d been forced to repeat a year due to all the moves he’d dragged her through. Noah Stilinski must have thought the same when it looked like his son was going to be swallowed up by the disease that had taken his wife. ”Years of experience,” Chris said with dry amusement. ”If you can get him to focus, he’s actually pretty sharp.” Just hard to wrangle, like a wet cat, albeit it with less spitting violence.
Robert Webber had been the same. In the end he’d taken him down, but the man had fought him every step of the way. Perhaps it would’ve been a mercy to put him down, getting justice for the hunter at the same time as he gave Webber the peace he’d wanted, but in the end all he’d done was drop him with that gunshot to his leg. Weary with the internal moral battle over it, Chris sank down on the edge of the desk that was shoved over in the corner. ”I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d gone to ground somewhere. My people have looked for him, but we don’t know the town as well as some and there seems a thousand places to hide around here.” Letting out a long breath, Chris looked up at Ric and shook his head. ”The name on his driver’s license was Robert Webber. Seems as though he was a doctor, but I doubt he’s practising now. The only things I know for certain are that his wife was killed by a werewolf and that he swears he wasn’t turned by a bite or by killing someone.” That really only left one possibility and it was one he hadn’t wanted to consider – the Dread Doctors weren’t only turning teenagers now.

Ric had always known that the hunters in Mystic Falls would either be glad that there was a school like his where kids could learn to control themselves or they would think it was an abomination. Had he been the person he was when he first made his way to Mystic Falls then he would have thought that it was the latter but he had changed a lot since then and he had learned to be a lot more open minded. Even before he learned that his own son was a werewolf he had changed, his best friend was a vampire and now his wife and twin daughters were witches. Ric had figured out pretty quickly after the girls were born that they would need a safe space to grow up in and learn how to use and control what they were and the school gave them that. He had half expected some of the hunters to make a move on the school but so far none of them had done and he couldn’t deny that he was grateful to them for that. “Maybe not, the kids filled me in on what went on back there. I’m really sorry about what happened to Allison,” Ric admitted gently. She was back now but that wouldn’t take away the pain that her loss or demon possession had caused. “It was selfish at first, I wanted somewhere safe where my kids could grow up and learn about what they are in peace but we’ve been able to help so many kids and there are a lot more we can help. If you ever find yourself at a loose end or you come across any supernatural kids who need help we could use more people to reach out to them and bring them here,” he offered, knowing that he would never turn down any extra help if there were those who had the time. Right now he and the others were doing the best they could but there were a lot more kids out there who needed help and Ric knew that he wanted them to reach out to as many as possible and hopefully stop what had happened in Beacon Hills and even in Mystic Falls from happening again. “Our resources are pretty good as well so if you need any help on a case let me know.” Stiles had reached out to him for help this time around but he had no problem with Chris doing the same himself if he needed to as well. “You’re the Stiles whisperer, I’ll have to remember that,” Ric nodded as Chris said he had years of experience and that if he could get the kid to focus then he was actually pretty sharp. “Honestly his dad deserves a medal,” he added with a grin. Thankfully none of his kids were like that and he really was glad about that. Talking about Stiles and the encounter they’d had was a good distraction but Ric knew that Chris had asked him there for a reason and it wasn’t long before the guy started to full him in. “You’re right, there are a lot of hiding places around here. I’m pretty sure there are some that even I haven’t found yet and I’ve been here for quite a while now,” he admitted. He hadn’t been able to find where the Dread Doctors were hiding and that bugged him but he wasn’t giving up and it would be the same with this guy. “There are a few hidden spots out in the woods that not many know about and a few abandoned houses around town. We can check them out if you like,” he offered, not sure whether Chris had plans with his daughter or whether he was free to do a little looking around. “He could have still been born a werewolf but he would have started turning much earlier,” Ric said thoughtfully. “I hate to say it but the only thing that makes sense is that the Dread Doctors got hold of him. I have some friends at the hospital, I can reach out to them and see if they know him,” he offered as he studied everything in the room carefully, knowing it wouldn’t hurt to get a little more background if they could. “With this set up there’s no way he could have escaped on his own. Any idea who helped him?”CHRIS ARGENT

Sympathy had choked him after Victoria had died. Only he and Gerard had known the truth of how it had happened, and the lies had closed around his throat like a noose. His hand had been on the weapon, her pleas to help had rang in his ears for months afterwards. It had been no easier after Allison had died. Chris had found himself sinking into his grief, drowning in it and while Scott and Stiles and the others had known how it happened, they hadn’t been able to stop the way the sympathies he received over it left him feeling. The lead weight of it all tore through him, hollowing him out so that only a shell of a man was left behind. They’d tried to help him fill it in again, but it had taken Allison’s return from … where she had been to start to do that. Heartfelt words like Alaric’s no longer pinballed through that empty space, leaving his ears ringing with each hit.
He nodded, lips pressed together, in gratitude. In the end the fault for Allison’s death only lay with one thing, and that was the nogitsune. ”Than you,” he murmured, his voice still a little tight. Chris’s teeth raked over his lip as Ric explained, his eyes fixed on a man who’d tried to do his family should’ve done – bring peace to a world that was already difficult enough without adding the worst of the supernatural to it. ”It might’ve been selfish to start with, but it’s far more than that now,” Chris agreed. ”There are plenty of kids out there struggling through this without any sort of guidance. I’ll spread the word, I’m sure some’ll hear it in the end.” Perhaps including Storm. The kid had a home for now, but he hadn’t wanted to go back to high school. He wasn’t sure if he’d want to take a chance on the Salvatore School, but it was an option at least. ”I’ll make sure I do that,” Chris assured Ric. ”It’d be helpful having a network out here.” Beyond the one his family had been building with other hunters around the world for centuries now. Chuckling rustily, Chris raised his hands to ward off Ric’s suggestion. ”I wouldn’t put it that way. I think it’d take an entire time to really get him under control.” But for a moment or two at least, he could get Stiles to pause with one cold, threatening look – the sort he’d tried to temper more in the time that they’d had Allison back. ”I won’t argue with that,” he quipped lightly about Sheriff Stilinski deserving a medal. They’d all been through things that they never should’ve had to, but somehow they remained on their feet and in a fight that never seemed to end. Maybe from time to time it seemed a little quieter, that always ended up being the calm before the storm though.
The werewolf had a chance of becoming another of those storms. Failing again and again to find him, Chris knew he had to extend the search, bring more people in on this. He’d already talked it through with Allison and had the pack looking out for him, but as he’d said, there were plenty of places for Webber to go to ground. Huffing out a breath at Ric’s backing up of what he said, Chris nodded. ”So we’re looking for a needle in a haystack – one that’s capable of murder.” Webber had tried to play dumb about it, but there was blood on the man’s hands.
”I’d appreciate it. I’ve had my people out in the woods, but there’s been no sign of him.” Maybe someone with more knowledge of the town had more of a chance. Maybe more knowledge about what sort of wolves were prevalent here too. ”He’s gotta be in his thirties, maybe his forties. If this was a born wolf he wouldn’t have been so confused about it…” He trailed off at the mention of the Dread Doctors, hissing out a sigh. It would be just like them to twist someone up that much. ”If it wasn’t the Dread Doctors themselves, maybe the girlfriend? He accused my people of killing her. I couldn’t track her either, but none of my people touched her.” And that had to be the pivot point this entire problem was moving around.
