It had been a few years since Athena had arrived in Mystic Falls and the truth was that she had made a home for herself there. She had been reunited with Lukas and Axel, the family she had gained after her sister was taken from her and she had left behind her own family in her grief, and she had descendents living in town as well. It was a little strange to think that there was another calling the town her home who shared her face but Athena had known about her line of doppelgangers for a long time. They were always born into the world when they were needed most and as far as Athena was concerned that wasn't a bad thing. She hadn't truly known what she would find when she arrived in Mystic Falls but she had realised pretty quickly that she wasn't going to be in a hurry to leave the town behind. One of the things that had surprised her most was finding out that Amara was alive after all and that she was living in town too. Athena knew that she would always be grateful to the Salvatores for looking after her sister but the truth was that she felt much better now that Amara was living with her. She hadn't known that Amara had been alive for all this time because the truth was that had she known then she wouldn't have stopped until she found her. She hadn't been resurrected like Axel had, Amara had never actually died and Athena hated that she had believed Qetsiyah's lies for so long. Unfortunately she couldn't change that now no matter how much she might like to so all she could do was try and make the best of it. She tried to spend as much time with the boys as she could and she had been spending time with Amara and getting to know Tatia as well. Mystic Falls seemed to be the kind of place that brought people together but Athena knew that wasn't a bad thing. She knew that there were others in town from her past too, the Mikaelsons had decided to call Mystic Falls their home as well and she knew that they had caused a bit of a stir to begin with, or at least Niklaus had, but things seemed to have settled down now and for that she was truly grateful. That day Athena didn't have a case to work for once and the others were all off doing their own thing so she made her way to the Grill and headed straight for the bar, knowing that it wouldn't hurt to kill some time by having a few drinks and perhaps see who was there at the same time. Muscle Memory With Athena Petrova Klaus knew he was teetering on an edge. He usually was (it seemed to be his current state in life) but this time he was closer than normal. His conversation with both Aurora and Elijah were the culprit. He had spent far more time than he should have wrapped up in the consequences of both. He couldn't help but wonder if that was what Aurora had wanted --- she just so casually dropped the match and walked away. Surely she had known that he would go to Elijah and demand the truth. She probably enjoyed the thought --- a sort of payback for what Elijah had done to her.
He just hated that he might have been her puppet.
At the same time, confronting Elijah needed to happen. It was simply too big of an issue to ignore and if he had let it fester than he would have sailed over that edge instead of just holding onto it as he was at present.
He was more than a bottle in, a fact that seemed to amaze the bartender, when she walked in. At first he thought he was drunk (nearly impossible given his ability to hold his alcohol). He watched her move through the bar, another figure from his past walking into his present. Oh he knew the whole world did not revolve around him but sometimes he liked to pretend the opposite. His head tilted as she took a seat at the bar.
Klaus waited a few beats before he decided to speak up. "Are you just going to sit there and pretend that I am not at the other end of the bar?" he mused, before he stood. He felt the rush of alcohol throughout his body (a nice buzz settling over him) and smiled as he moved to sit directly next to her. "I am offended."

Mystic Falls was a strange town, that was for sure, but the truth was that it was home. Athena had arrived in town trying to find answers for some friends of hers and in doing so she had ended up finding more than she had ever bargained for. As it turned out she had family in town herself and with the Mikaelsons in town as well she had a connection to her past once more that she hadn’t had for such a long time. Athena had grown used to being a lone wolf, it had always seemed easier to be that way than to end up losing more people that she loved, but she had put down roots in Mystic Falls and she liked to think that she was making a difference there. For such a long time she had been a hunter, someone who had stepped up to help when things seemed to be at their bleakest, and that hadn’t changed but she knew that she wasn’t the only one. One of her doppelgangers was in Mystic Falls and Athena was used to being mistaken for the girl but slowly but surely she was establishing a life of her own and she couldn’t deny that she liked it there. That day she had ended up heading to the Grill to kill some time since she didn’t have anything else that she needed to do for once and as she reached the bar she quickly caught the eye of the bartender and ordered herself a drink. He was cute, that much was for sure, but the wedding band on his finger spoke volumes. Athena had been married once herself and she had loved her husband and children but she had thrown it all away when she had found out what had really happened to her sister and had sought vengeance against Qetsiyah. Since then she’d had flings and they were fun for a while but nothing lasted and that was something that she had grown used to. Lifting her glass to her lips, she took a sip and looked up at the sound of a familiar voice, albeit one that she hadn’t heard for a long time. “Believe it or not the world doesn’t revolve around you, Niklaus. I hadn’t realised you were there,” Athena said, a smile forming on her face as he sat down next to her and she turned to look at him. “It’s been a long time, it’s good to see you,” she added, knowing that she meant it. She couldn’t remember the last time she had seen Niklaus but no matter how much time passed she still cared about him so she knew that she was never going to pass up the chance to catch up with him. “How have you been? I hear you’re a father now, congratulations,” she said sincerely. That was one thing she had never imagined he would become but rumour was that it suited him and she was curious to see whether that was true. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

Muscle Memory With Athena Petrova It was immediate for him to place a hand to his heart, a wounded look on his face. He overdid it (as he did most things in his life) but underneath there was a hint of humor on his face. "The world may not but it damn well should," Klaus pointed out and the jury was still out as to how much he meant this words or not. He knew in the supernatural world he held a lofty position. He was an alpha in more ways than one. That commanded a certain level of respect (or fear --- depending on who you were speaking to). "But I forgive you for not noticing the obvious. Try not to make that mistake again." Here he was clearly joking, as the smile on his face spread wide.
There was part of Klaus that wanted to ask how she had heard of his daughter but he recognized that not everyone was a threat. It was a hard lesson to learn and he would struggle in the future. Trust was not easy for him but he knew Athena meant Hope no harm.
"Thank you. She is my greatest joy," he admitted, his voice softening as it always did when he spoke of Hope. He couldn't help the change she brought over him. Some may be surprised to see it but they obviously didn't understand the bond between child and parent. "How about you? Where have you hidden yourself away at?" He tried to remember the exact details of the last time he had seen her but found that the memories were fuzzy. He had far too many of them floating around in his head it was no wonder that he couldn't pinpoint just one.
"And what has brought you back here? I would think you would be traveling the world --- not settling for this place." It was evident that Mystic Falls was not his first choice but it was the home of his family at this point. He would go where they were.

Athena couldn’t help but roll her eyes playfully as Niklaus placed a hand over his heart and pretended that he was wounded. “Of course it should,” she teased. She knew that he had changed since the time when she had lived in the same village as them back when they were human but they still meant a lot to her and she knew that that would never change. She had heard all about Niklaus’ exploits and she had seen some of the damage he had done for herself but he seemed to be doing better in Mystic Falls and she couldn’t deny that she was glad about that. “You normally have enough eyes on you as it is, I would have thought you would be glad not to have mine on you as well,” she laughed as she nudged his arm fondly with her own. Niklaus was handsome and always had been but it was more than that now. There were people in town who knew who he was and knew about his reputation so she didn’t doubt that they would probably try and keep track of what he was up to if he was in the same place as them as well. As he said that Hope was his greatest joy, Athena felt a genuine smile form on her face. “As she should be. From what I hear she is an incredible young woman, she’s doing you proud,” she said gently. Axel had filled her in a bit about his time at the Salvatore School and she couldn’t deny that her interest had been piqued at the mention of Niklaus’ daughter. There were a lot more species out there than Axel had come across before he’d died and she knew that he was enjoying learning about them all but just like her father, Hope was one of a kind and that could put noses out of joint but by all accounts she was doing well. “I’ve been around,” she shrugged as Niklaus asked where she had been hiding herself away. “One of my doppelgangers lives in town so I grow tired of being mistaken for her quite often,” she added. She knew that it was to be expected, Allison was friends with the True Alpha who lived in town and she had plenty of other friends around her as well. She had gone to school in Mystic Falls so it was natural for those around town to know her but Athena was the original of her line of doppelgangers and it was always a relief when someone recognised her for her rather than because they thought that she was Allison. “To tell you the truth I grew tired of travelling and not putting down roots anywhere. I heard that some distant relatives were living here so I figured I might as well check the place out for myself. It turns out there is plenty to be done around here, lots of supernaturals to keep in line and lots of humans to keep on the right track and make sure they don’t hurt anyone else,” she shrugged as she took a sip of her drink. “How about you, what made you decide to stay here of all places?”NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

Muscle Memory With Athena Petrova He felt her nudge and turned his head slightly, a smile playing across the edges of his lips before it spread fully across his mouth. "Ah, but most sets of eyes are looking with fear, with secret loathing. Yours are not. I actually value that a bit more these days." Oh he still wanted to be feared. He wanted most to clear a path for him when he moved throughout this world. But there were some who he hoped never feared him. His daughter chief among them. He knew he could trace so many of the changes in him back to Hope. She would never truly understand the power she had over him and what she had done to his life. He would have never thought it possible (especially had you asked him a few decades ago) but he was forever grateful to her for that.
There was a swell of pride when she mentioned Hope. "Honestly, most of who she is she owes to herself. She is strong, intelligent, and compassionate --- I lack the basic elements of the last one and have used the other two to destroy where Hope creates. So I like to think that she is who she is in despite of me." It was a little self deprecating but it was also close to the truth. He had entered totally knew territory when he first held her and he had been feeling his way through ever since. He was just glad that she was who she was. He would never be prouder of anyone he knew.
"Oh so I shouldn't be surprised if I run into someone with your face?" he asked with a raised eyebrow. "Good to know." He would like to think that he would be able to tell the difference, much the same way he could tell the difference between Katherine and Elena but he knew it wasn't quite that simple. "Mystic Falls is no doubt better off with you in it --- you would not let anyone step out of line unnecessarily."
He took a deep breath, fiddling with his glass. "As for me --- I guess the Mikaelson family has come full circle. So many of our defining moments occurred here and I would like to think here is where we do our best to be a proper family again. I know --- coming from me it all sounds suspect. I am trying my best to walk that fine line between family man and holy terror. Depending on the day, you never know who you are going to meet."

“In that case, I’m glad I can be of assistance,” Athena said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at Niklaus. “For the record that’s not the only reason why people look at you these days, you seem to have your fair share of admirers as well,” she added, nodding in the direction of a small group who seemed to be looking at him in just that way. He was handsome, that hadn’t changed, and she didn’t doubt that he could have any woman he wanted if he was ready to indulge in something new. Niklaus had plenty of people around him now who cared about him anyway, he had all of his siblings and he had Hope so he was pretty lucky really. Athena knew what it was like to feel all alone in the world and she knew that she wouldn’t wish that on anyone, least of all Niklaus. She had heard stories of the things he had done over the years, of course she had, and as a hunter she tried to keep the world safe and keep the supernatural world hidden but when it came to the Mikaelsons she knew that her history with the family complicated things but they had turned a corner and she really was glad about that. Listening as Niklaus spoke about Hope, it was clear that he doubted himself and Athena’s expression softened slightly. She wasn’t used to being around people she genuinely cared about, she was used to putting on a front of being nothing more than a detached hunter but this time was different. “Don’t sell yourself short, Niklaus. You have the first two of those traits in spades. As for the third, well, after everything you’ve been through you’ve built up walls around yourself and I don’t think anyone would blame you for that but I know compassion lays within you as well,” she said gently. It might be buried deep down under the hurt he had endured but Niklaus was a good man back when she had known him and she refused to believe that had changed. “You definitely shouldn’t be surprised but who knows, you might be one of the few who will be able to tell the difference,” Athena shrugged. Some of Allison’s friends and family were able to do that and the truth was that Athena hadn’t had a lot of people in her corner for a long time but she hoped that Niklaus might be one of the few who could tell the difference. “I’m glad you think so,” she said, her smile returning as he said that Mystic Falls was better off with her in it. “There are a lot of other hunters in town but let’s just say they don’t have my level of experience,” she grinned. None of them ever would given that she was two thousand years old and they didn’t have the abilities she did either. As Niklaus spoke again, Athena studied him carefully for a moment. “It doesn’t to me, your family has always meant a lot to you,” she offered as he said it probably sounded suspicious coming from him. “Here’s hoping we all get to see the family man rather than the terror, I’m not sure Mystic Falls could cope with that,” she said as she lifted her glass to her lips and took a sip. Muscle Memory With Athena Petrova He gave a casual glance towards the group she had indicated, a half smile playing on his lips. He hadn't considered that kind of admiration in awhile --- which was surprising. His mind had been elsewhere, desperate to protect his daughter in the only ways he knew how. "They only know the face --- not the truth of what lies behind it. Poor souls," he joked, and then wondered if he should take advantage of it. Find himself a pretty face, enjoy something that he hadn't had in awhile. He could also get the bonus of a good feed too before he sent her on her way, none of the wiser.
But something held him back from doing just that.
Funny how much he could change while still remaining much the same.
Klaus turned his attention back to Athena, his head tilting. "You are being exceptionally kind to me. I appreciate it --- even if it isn't warranted. I suppose you are right. The walls I have built around me are strong, fortified by centuries of pain. If the compassion is there, it is struggling to climb over the barriers." Still, he liked to believe that she was right. That he was capable of it. That was almost as comforting as the idea of actually having it. He just needed to believe that one day it might break through the defenses he had so carefully constructed.
He would hold onto that little bit of hope (for Hope). For now, he gave a low chuckle. "Oh I will know the difference. I am sure of that. Despite sharing your face, there is only one original." He thought much the same when it came to Tatia. It was strange how magic had woven around them and created echoes of them throughout time. He couldn't imagine how strange it would be to come face to face with oneself. He wondered if he would be far too vain to deal with the possibility. He would simply have to wipe out any trace of his copy. In that way he was like Katerina when dealing with the idea of Elena. "How do you feel --- having a copy of yourself creating her own history that some might mistake for your own?" He was genuinely curious to see her take on things, given her ability to embrace compassion.
He lifted his own glass mutely at her toast. Here's hoping he could find that line --- he never wanted to be seen as weak either. He knew what would happen then. All his enemies would come for him. Like sharks in the water scenting blood. He sipped his drink, knowing that he had a hill to climb but he was determined.

“Call me biased but I don’t think what’s behind the face is so bad,” Athena shrugged. She had known the Mikaelsons for a long time and even though she was a hunter and felt like it was her responsibility to keep as many people as possible safe and keep the supernatural and human worlds separate, she knew that when it came to Niklaus’s family she would fight with everything she had in order to protect them. They had done a lot of awful things over the years, that much was true, but they had done some good too and Athena knew that she wasn’t about to turn her back on them. There were very few people in her life that she had kept in contact with or had wanted to see again, most were people she met briefly and didn’t care if she saw them again or not but Niklaus and his family were different and always had been. They meant a lot to her adoptive son Lukas too given that he and Henrik had grown up together and his mother was in love with Elijah so she knew that she had more of a reason to want to keep them safe. As Niklaus spoke again, Athena couldn’t help but laugh. “You know me, I just say it like I see it,” she shrugged. She knew that Niklaus didn’t always see what he was truly capable of but Athena didn’t have that same problem. “It may be struggling but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t still there. You’re capable of a lot more than you think,” Athena offered. She had seen potential in Niklaus a long time ago and she still saw it now but she wasn’t sure that he saw it as well. He had been hurt so many times and he didn’t know who to trust, something that Athena knew all too well, and when people lived as long as they did it was natural to build up those walls. Athena had them herself but she was slowly starting to let a select few people in and she hoped that with time Niklaus would too. “I’ll take that as a compliment,” Athena laughed, nudging Niklaus’s arm with her own as he said that there was only one original. It was strange seeing someone else walking around sharing her face but she had encountered others from her bloodline over the years just as she had her sister’s and Silas’s so she had grown used to it to an extent. As Niklaus asked how she felt about having a copy of herself, Athena’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “To be honest I’ve come across a lot of them over the years. Allison was here first so I get mistaken for her a lot but what’s stranger is seeing doppelgangers of my sister and Silas. For a long time seeing them hurt because they served as a reminder of what I’d lost,” she shrugged. “How is it for you knowing there are others like Tatia in town?” she asked as she took a sip of her drink. She knew how Niklaus used to feel about her sister’s doppelganger so she knew it had to be strange for him but she hoped it wasn’t too bad. NIKLAUS MIKAELSON

Muscle Memory With Athena Petrova A small laugh escaped his lips at her words. "Biased," he teased. He appreciated it nonetheless. Very few people were willing to look beyond his crimes. He could not blame them. He had created that expectation a long time ago. It had been a purposeful decision too, one designed to ensure that he would only have to deal with serious threats. It made his life easier, even if some days he now wished he had not taken the easy way out. He wished that he had struck a balance.
Oh well, if he let the what ifs consume him he would live a miserable life indeed.
Best to work with what he had.
Klaus raised both his brows. "Now I know I have you swindled, Athena," he chided playfully. "You are very gracious to say that but I think that may capabilities have a limit. All of us do. I am unfortunately a creature of habit tooo --- another thing we all share, whether we want to admit it or not. But that does not mean that there are some things that can't shift slightly. If they do, I know where it comes from. Being a father...that has changed some things in me, perhaps enhanced others..." Like his willingness to practically burn the world down if he thought Hope was in trouble. "But I do appreciate you telling me like you see it, Athena. I might not entirely share you vision but there is comfort in knowing that I have not been written off by those who knew me before..." He would like to claim that he had no connection to that man, the one who cowered before Mikael and let Esther bend him to her will. But that would be a lie.
He pressed his lips together at her question. How did he feel knowing that there were others that shared Tatia's face? "It was jarring at first --- but I knew Katerina long before I came back to Mystic Falls. She soon showed me the difference between her and the woman that I cared for. Still, it is hard not to feel something. But rest assured, that face doesn't pull me in like it used to. Time has cured me of that."

“I’m allowed to be. Even the famous Klaus Mikaelson needs someone in his corner every now and then,” Athena teased, a smile forming on her face as she looked over at him. He had his family, that much was true, but she knew that things between them had been rocky in the past and while she hadn’t seen it for herself, she knew that it couldn’t have been easy. She didn’t doubt that the man before her now had changed a lot over the years but at the end of the day Athena knew that she was always going to have a soft spot for the Mikaelsons and that was never going to change. There were very few people who tended to make a lasting impression on her which wasn’t unusual given how long she had lived and how much the world had changed during that time but that particular family had made an impression, that was for sure. Elijah had lost control and killed Tatia and after that Athena had stepped in to raise Lukas after he lost his grandparents as well. Her life had changed in many ways the day Esther had turned her children into vampires just like theirs had and she could never forget that. As Niklaus spoke again, Athena couldn’t help but laugh. “I can’t deny that you’ve changed but I still see glimmers of the man you were back then occasionally,” she shrugged as she took a sip of her drink. “I’ll never write you off, you should know that by now,” she said as she set her glass down in front of her and turned to look at him once more. She was a hunter and she had taken down a lot of people who would cause others harm over the course of her long life but being around the Mikaelsons and being there to raise Lukas had helped her see that she was existing rather than actually living. They had helped her more than she had ever thought possible and she knew that she couldn’t turn her back on them. “I wish I had people in my life who knew me before all of this.” She still felt guilty about leaving her husband and children behind to pursue vengeance when she learned that Qetsiyah had killed her sister but it was something that she had learned to live with. “You’re right, being a father has changed you but I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” she added. She could see just how much he loved Hope and if she was honest that was something that she had never thought possible for Niklaus. This was a side of him that she hadn’t seen before but so far she liked it. As he said that time had cured him of the pull that those who shared Tatia’s face, Amara’s face, once had, Athena felt a smile touch her lips. “I’m glad, it seems a lot of men will do crazy things for those who share my sister’s face. You’re much better off out of it,” she nodded. “And what of Hope’s mother? Are the two of you together?” she asked, unable to deny that she was interested about what his life looked like now. Muscle Memory With Athena Petrova "I am going to quote you on that down the road. Just when I need it," he warned her. He knew that so many wanted to see him stand alone, completely abandoned by anyone who might care. He understood where that came from. He was now at a point in his life where he could see the consequences of his actions and it was not a pleasant place to be. He sometimes found himself missing when he could care less about what others thought (although in truth, he had never not cared, not really). But in order to return to that part of his life, he would have to give up so many people. He wasn't prepared to do that.
Especially not Hope. He would give up his very life before he would give up Hope.
He gave Athena an appreciative smile at the idea that she would never give up on him. He liked to think that Elijah would say the same. He was quite sure it was so but there was still part of him that was terrified that he would one day push his brother too far. He knew his latest antics with the witches had put Elijah at the brink of it all. He had to be cautious, even if he was still committed to finding ways to protect Hope in the end.
"I may not know you in the before but I do feel privileged to know you in the after, Athena. I know life has not worked out the way either of us thought back when we were properly human --- and I know we have both done things we regret, although I am willing to bet my list is fairly more significant than yours. I wouldn't spend too much time considering wishes though --- trust me when I say that they can consume you and there is much more in life to focus on," Klaus told her. He was probably the last one to be dispensing advice but yet here he was, trying his best to interject some wisdom into the conversation.
He then snorted. "I might not harbor any romantic notions when it comes to that face but that doesn't mean that I have necessarily behaved. Her latest doppelganger --- well, she was the key to me being able to fully be myself. I not ashamed to say that I took advantage of that. But before you paint me entirely with the villain brush, she still lives and from what I last heard, seems to be doing just fine." He sipped his drink, making a face as he did so. He and Hayley? He was shaking his head as he set the glass back down. "No, no, Hope's mother and I were a mistake that turned out to have a happy consequence. We stand united in our desire to keep Hope safe but nothing more than that."

“You do that, I’m not going anywhere,” Athena assured him. She knew all about the reputation that Niklaus had and she had met people along the way who had said that she should try and stop him but the truth was that he and his family meant a lot to her and she knew that she was always going to be there for them if they needed her. She had lived for a thousand years before coming across them but even when they were human they had made an impression on her. After they became immortal she had felt even more of a connection to them as they were people who truly had the capability of living as long as she would and that was something that she hadn’t come across before. Everyone else in her life had come and gone and she had outlived all of them so it had been good to shake things up a bit. She had helped Lukas become immortal when he’d asked so she’d had him and Axel too and no matter what happened or what they did she refused to turn her back on the people she cared about. There weren’t that many of them left so she knew how precious those connections were and she didn’t want to give them up. She knew that Niklaus’s actions had been born from pain and anger just like hers had when she had killed Qetsiyah so she understood more than anyone could realise. “Thank you, Nik,” Athena said, a smile touching her lips as she looked over at him. “I know you’re right, there is a lot to focus on but some things still aren’t as easy to move on from,” she sighed. “I may not have done as many things I regret as you did but there’s one thing I regret more than anything else,” she said, knowing that sharing this with Niklaus was probably long overdue. “After my sister was taken from me I really found it difficult. I tried to move on, I got married and had children, but the grief was still there and after my children were born I became depressed. I eventually told my husband everything and he told me to go and find the answers I needed but after I drank the elixir, killed Qetsiyah and tasted blood for the first time I knew I couldn’t go home until I had learned to control myself. By the time I returned home my husband had started seeing someone else and he and my children were happy so rather than disrupt their lives again, I left. You have done a lot of awful things but you would die to protect your daughter. I abandoned my children,” she said, letting out a shaky breath before taking a sip of her drink. Her depression had prevented her from truly bonding with her children but leaving them behind was still her biggest regret to this day. She knew that they had gone on to have families of their own because her bloodline had continued but that still didn’t make it any easier although it was something that she’d learned to live with. “Why does that not surprise me?” she laughed as Niklaus said he hadn’t necessarily behaved when it came to Amara’s doppelgangers. “When have I ever done that?” Athena asked, pretending to be hurt when he said that before she painted him entirely with the villain brush the latest doppelganger was still alive. “See, you got what you wanted without killing anyone. For you that’s progress,” she said as she took another sip of her drink. There was a time when he would have killed someone without thinking twice about it but that seemed to have changed with this latest doppelganger at least. “I’m glad you have her helping look out for Hope at least. From what I hear you have Henrik back to help now as well, that must be a relief,” Athena offered, knowing how much his death had hurt Niklaus. She wasn’t sure if what she had heard about the circumstances of Henrik’s return was true but she knew he was back and she knew that had to mean a lot to all of them as it certainly did to Lukas.
